The master site plan for the Camp Yellow Cardinal site in Prince Edward County
A former Richmond restaurateur is onto a new venture
who previously co-owned Richmond Sticky ToGoGo and The Cellar Door
a 25-acre “glamping” destination in Prince Edward County
An abbreviation for “glamorous camping,” glamping offers more luxurious accommodations than just the typical tents and sleeping bags
a bath house with heated floors and other amenities that Wilson hopes will elevate the camping experience
Wilson and his wife and co-owner Laura were granted a special use permit for the venture at last week’s Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors meeting
Wilson will handle operations and marketing
while Laura will handle design and guest experience
delivery and catering spinoff of Fan sushi joint Sticky Rice
a Peruvian-inspired restaurant at 1600 Monument Avenue
Wilson ended up in what he joked was a “real job” as the director of community engagement at Dominion Payroll
Yet he never forgot his passion for creating experiences for guests
As he and his wife dipped their toes into real estate investing over the past two years
Wilson said they had the idea to create a business that could help people like themselves from urban areas find some solace in the Virginia countryside
We slowly built this idea and it kept coming back to how great it would be to have something out in the countryside
and it was a retreat for people like us who want to get away for the weekend and recharge,” Wilson said
A rendering of what the domes at Camp Yellow Cardinal might look like
Out of their brainstorming came Camp Yellow Cardinal
The couple looked at several rural sites within an hour-and-a-half drive of Richmond before landing on and purchasing the current site
due much in part to its proximity to Farmville
“Farmville is in that critical mass where it has around five to seven thousand people there,” Wilson said
the 24.5-acre site that will house Camp Yellow Cardinal consists of vacant
The property is off the southern side of C C Road
just west of Meherrin and about 20 minutes south of Farmville
The special-use permit approval means the Wilsons can now begin the first planned phase of construction for the project
Phase one will involve building six campsites
each consisting of a 19-foot diameter “retro futurist” dome with a king-size bed for two guests
Other phase one construction includes a gravel parking lot
a walking path between campsites and utilities
Phase two would bring six more of the campsites
A rendering of the Camp Yellow Cardinal bathhouse
Each of the Camp Yellow Cardinal domes built during phase one construction will fit up to two guests
they may build two slightly larger domes to fit a few more people
Wilson said he hopes to break ground in late April
and is allotting around three months in construction for the first phase
The Wilsons plan to open Camp Yellow Cardinal after the first phase of construction is complete
which should be sometime in July or August
including purchasing the property and construction costs
“It’s not the kind of thing that I’m used to
throwing half a million dollars around,” Wilson said
we’re not constructing anything that is so complicated.”
The Wilsons plan to target both young couples and recent empty-nesters
particularly those from Richmond and other metro areas within a three-hour radius of the campsite
projected rates for the campsite are $285 per campsite per night during the colder months of December through April
and as high as $350 per night during the rest of the year
Wilson and his wife continue to reside in Richmond
Wilson plans to serve as the property’s full-time owner-manager
The husband and wife duo also plan to hire two to three local staff members to do cleaning and turnover service
After his many years in the restaurant industry
Wilson said he feels ready to get back to his hospitality roots
“I’m thrilled to be back in that entrepreneurship saddle again,” he said
“I’ve been leveraging a network I’ve built over a varied but strong career in Richmond
I feel optimistic there’s a community behind this idea
I’m thrilled to bring this thing to life.”

will be a very niche demographic……
Most people who go glamping only do it for a few nights at a time
so It’s not an unrealistic price point
Because unless you don’t want to do anything except lay around your glampsite
but the price point seems high for being south of Richmond
At that price I’d expect them to be closer to say Ashland in an effort to be accessible to NOVA
and is in a great location: nearby Farmville is a charming college town with local shops and restaurants (including a brewery and distillery) along with nearby parks and the high-bridge trail
Looking at the proposed layout with many of the sites directly adjacent to wetlands and a stream
do I wonder how they’ll manage the mosquitoes
And the High Bridge Trail State Park is currently undergoing a new master plan process so it will be getting more amenities and access points
Farmville sits very well near the mid-point
Any idea how far this is from the High Bridge Trail or bikeable to HBT access
It looks like it’s located in Meherrin – so about 15-20 miles South of where the HBT runs
Making it accessible if you’re willing to bike on rural roads
the Tobacco Heritage Trail is slated to eventually run through Meherrin
so that would be more readily accessible in the future
Be prepared for wildlife and not all the fluffy cuddly kind
There is a growing development trend around the country geared to the tiny house movement
either as a short term rental or land lease where the tenant owns the house and leases the lot

the creators of FarmVille reflect on the compulsive cartoon farm sim that paved the way for a data-driven world
Facebook users of a certain age may remember a particularly forlorn farm animal popping up in their feeds during the platform’s heyday
The lonely cow would wander into FarmVille players’ pastures with its face twisted into a frown and its eyes shimmering with tears
“She feels very sad and needs a new home,” an accompanying caption read
asking you to adopt the cow or message your friends for help
Ignore the cow’s plea and it would presumably be left friendless and foodless
and you’d be accelerating the spread of one of the biggest online crazes of the 2010s
Not bad for a game that was stitched together in five weeks
By 2009, developer Zynga had already established itself as a forerunner of social media games when four friends from the University of Illinois presented their plans for a farming sim
It was a hastily put together reimagining of a failed browser game they had made to ape The Sims
but Zynga was sufficiently impressed that it bought the tech
hired the foursome and paired them with a few in-house developers
Zynga pushed FarmVille out of the door fast
View image in fullscreenThe FarmVille world … Photograph: PhotoEdit/Alamy“Facebook was exploding in popularity and engagement in a way that was novel at the time,” says former Zynga director of product Jon Tien
FarmTown – an earlier farm sim from a different studio that had a similar cartoonish look and design – had already hit 1 million daily active users on the platform
And while Facebook had half-heartedly courted game studios before
it told Zynga it would soon be granting third-party developers access to user data
“They opened up their platform for app developers like Zynga in such a way that we could create a mostly symbiotic relationship,” says Tien
“Facebook gave Zynga access to a large engaged audience
while Zynga gave users of Facebook more to do on the platform.”
which let players nudge their friends with requests to grow their farm
flooding Facebook with posts and notifications advertising FarmVille to the masses
Such viral mechanics turned the game “into a topic of conversation akin to a meme,” says former Zynga vice president and general manager Roy Sehgal
“This watercooler effect made you want to join in because you saw your friends playing.”
you’d need to return at a set time hours later to harvest it
“The idea is the player is creating an appointment for themselves,” says FarmVille co-creator and lead developer Amitt Mahajan
“That ends up being the reason people come back every day.”
the game became a commitment that players felt they had to make good on
“We all make ever-growing lists of things we need to do and struggle to complete them in the time we’d like,” he says
“Checking things off your list is viscerally satisfying
and playing FarmVille was a way for people to lean into that.”
New features and content were added several times a week to keep players engaged
but the real magic happened behind the scenes with Zynga’s in-house data analytics tool ZTrack
Capable of monitoring the most granular player actions – from what features they used
and right down to where they clicked on the screen – it was intended to build a total
“We had hundreds if not thousands of dashboards and experiments running at any given time,” says Tien
“We could see any core metric on five-minute slices
We could see if new feature releases were impactful effectively immediately after release.”
Metric-based design is standard today across social media platforms
The belief in big data to predict consumer behaviour has underpinned everything from Google’s ad empire to Cambridge Analytica’s political consulting
none is more important than metricsZynga co-founder Andrew Trader“Zynga’s approach to analytics for their games inspired the entire digital analytics industry,” says Jeffrey Wang
co-founder and chief architect at Amplitude
“Amplitude’s earliest customers were ex-Zynga product managers who started their own companies and were looking for tools comparable to ZTrack
with the results determining what would be rolled out
and how they’d be integrated to maximise player retention
For Chee, FarmVille was a Silicon Valley entrepreneur’s dream – and firmly a product of its time. “If you fast forward to today, we don’t have nearly the same social phenomenon going on with Facebook as we did in 2009,” she says. “That was a very particular time for a game like FarmVille to come out, where recommender systems and algorithms were just in the right place.”
Communication, community, and education are our top priorities.
FARMVILLE – Senior Hezekiah Adams drove for the winning lay-up in the final seconds as No.4 seed West Bladen handed top-seeded Farmville Central their 1st home loss in 7 years and advanced to the NCHSAA Class 2A Eastern Championship Game with a 68-66 victory Friday night.
Coach Travis Pait’s Knights ran their winning streak to 20 in a row and improved to 27-1. West Bladen will face No. 3 seed Pittsboro Northwood (29-2) Thursday in the Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem. Northwood defeated No. 2 seed Southwest Onslow 59-44 Friday night.
Farmville star ‘MJ’ Williams tied the game 66-66 with a long 3-point shot with 17 seconds on the clock, before Adams drove past 2 defenders to score the game-winner. ‘MJ’ Williams heaved a long 3-pointer that bumped off the front of the rim as time expired.
“We were in a bit of a scramble on the last possession,” noted Coach Pait. ”But Hezi darted to the rim and made the lay-up. It was rough out there against their press, but we talked about just needing to be calm and make some shots.”
West Bladen rode a 22-9 3rd quarter surge to a 56-42 lead. However the Jaguars dialed up the defensive pressure and answered with a 13-0 run to close the gap to 56-55 on Cameron Honey’s baseline shot at the 5:25 mark.
“I think we just got caught up in the moment, but it was a very physical game,” said Coach Pait. “We moved Chase into the backcourt to give us a bigger target back there against their press and it helped.”
Junior guard Jackson Pait drilled in a 3-pointer from the right wing with 5:00 left to pad the Knight lead to 59-55. However Honey who scored 7 of his 9 points in the final period answered with a follow, and Steven Johnson’s basket tied the game 59-59.
Knight senior Chase Williams dropped in a lay-up off of a lob pass from junior Tylik McCall then later added a free throw for a 64-61 West lead with 1:39 remaining. Sophomore Kendell Lesane drove for a lay-in and a 66-61 lead at the 1:02 mark.
Farmville’s Williams turned a steal into a lay-up before connecting on the 3-ball that tied the game and set up Adams’ heroics.
Chase Williams posted his 18th double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Knight offense. The 6-8 Citadel signee connected on 7 of 8 shots from the field, blocked 4 shots and had 1 steal and 1 assist.
Pait fired in all 6 of his shots from the field including 5 3-point bombs and finished with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal. Lesane connected on 4 of his 7 field goal attempts and cashed in all 3 of his foul shots for 11 points. He also grabbed 2 rebounds.
Adams drained a pair of early 3-balls and tallied 10 points on 4 of 7 shooting to go with 3 steals, 2 deflections, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 blocked shot.
McCall rang up 8 points on 2 of 3 shooting from behind the 3-point arc and 2 for 2 at the foulline. He racked up 4 assists, 4 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 deflection. Junior Keonta Hill contributed 2 points, 2 deflections and 1 assist.
Three-balls by ‘MJ’ Williams and Amarion Williams staked Farmville to an early 6-0 lead. Lesane tossed in a pair of free throws, and Chase Williams banged in a lay-up, before Adams buried a 3-ball for a 7-6 West lead.
JaQuez Dixon’s 15-footer put the Jaguars back on top, but a pair of Chase Williams’ lay-ups ignited a 12-1 Knight run. Adams burnt the nets with another 3-ball,before Pait banked in a runner thru traffic then swished a long 3-pointer from the left wing. A Honey basket trimmed the margin to 19-11 at the break.
Lesane popped in a baseline jumper, and Adams was awarded a basket on a Farmville goal-tending violation to keep West up 23-13. The Jaguars closed to within 23-17, but McCall nailed a corner 3-ball, and Chase Williams turned a rebound basket into a 3-point play and a 29-17 lead.
Three-balls by Johnson and ‘MJ’ Williams rallied Farmville to within 29-25, but Pait blistered the nets with another 3-ball, and McCall sank 2 free throws for a 34-29 Knight lead. A 3-ball and a follow shot by ‘MJ’ Williams whittled the halftime lead to 34-33.
Pait opened the 2nd half with a 3-ball from the right wing then delivered an assist to Chase Williams who flipped in a hook shot. Chase Williams turned a McCall assist into another lay-up, and Lesane pulled up for a 10-footer then tacked on a free throw for a 44-36 Knight lead.
Lesane threw in an acrobatic fadeaway 8-footer, and McCall bounced in a 3-ball off the back rim. Pait sent an assist to Hill for a lay-up then nailed another 3-ball from the right wing. Junior Demarion Bryant dished an assist to Hunter Hester for a lay-up and a 56-42 lead at the quarter break.
The Knights shot 71% from the field (25 for 35) and were 9 of 15 (60%) on 3-point attempts. However 27 turnovers against the unrelenting Jaguar pressure plagued the West offense.
West Bladen held a 28-21 edge on the boards, but Farmville had a 14-4 edge in offensive rebounds. The Jaguars shot 41% (26 for 63), but were 6 for 18 (33%) on 3-pointers.
“We boxed out better tonight than we did last time against them,” said Coach Pait. “That was our game plan – box out, be calm and make shots.”
‘MJ’ Williams led all scorers for the Jaguars with 25 points. Bryant Dixon followed with 13 points. This will be the first time in 7 years that Farmville has not played in the Class 2A Championship Game.
FARMVILLE CENTRAL (66) – Cameron Honey 9, Bryant Dixon 13, JaQuez Dixon 2, Jordan James 2, Amarion Williams 5, ‘MJ’ Williams 25, Omaurie Phillips 2, Josiha Crandell 1, Xavier Shepard, Steven Johnson 7.

Pitt County — The Pitt County Board of Commissioners voted against supporting Farmville’s request for funding to assist in the construction of a new fire station
and Farmville Mayor John Moore says the Town of Farmville suffered a significant loss
Moore is urging Pitt County Commissioners to reconsider its stance and include a budget line item of $2,000,000.00 each year to address the pressing needs of fire departments throughout the county
The Pitt County Board of Commissioners meeting consisted of a long list on the agenda and a room full of people
One of the items discussed funding to build a new station for the Farmville Fire Department
A spokesperson of the Fir Department said the current building was built with a 50 year lifespan and they're past the mark
The Farmville Fire Department takes many mutual aid calls for service
meaning they're regularly asked to help others outside of their jurisdiction
The project is estimated to cost $8-9 million dollars through multiple sources and raising the fire tax alone would still take several years to meet their goal
A motion to fund the new station failed almost unanimously
Another item on the agenda we’ve talked about before was an ordinance for discharging firearms in the county
That item has been rescheduled for April 7

"The reason I voted against the fire department is because I support all
I don’t just pick and choose what department I help
Commissioner Lauren White provided a statement
"The county cannot afford to give every fire department 3 million dollars
Farmville can adjust their tax rate and build a new building that is within their budget
as every other fire district has done."
Hodgkins countered that the current fire tax in the Farmville rural fire district is six cents per 100
and even raising it to the state maximum of 15 cents would not generate enough revenue to build a fire station
Commissioners say that the county is conducting a study to determine how to fairly assist every fire department
Hodgkins said the town is exploring grants and other funding options for the station
