Utah — A dangerous intersection has made a big impact in the northern Utah town of Farr West
with many residents demanding change and waiting for it to happen after the recent death of a child
The focus of residents' concern is the intersection of 2700 North and 2000 West
which sits near Farr West Elementary School
A discussion was held about the intersection at city council meeting several months ago
and Mayor Ken Phippen says the city has met with the Utah Department of Transportation several times since
We're doing everything we can within the authority that we do have,” said the mayor
“We have adjusted the signal and outfitted it with a key that allows the crossing guard during school hours
he can put the key in the signal and it will it'll prevent left-hand turns,” Shaw explained
Farr West community calls for change at dangerous intersection:
UDOT has also increased the time children have to cross the sidewalk and lowered the speed limit on 2700 North to 40 miles per hour
But parents like Emily Shupe still think more needs to be done
“We need safe routes for our kids to be able to walk to school," Shupe said Thursday
"We have 10 students alone living on the east side of 2000 West that have zero way to walk to school safely in the mornings.”
as well as reducing the speed limit along 2000 West
“We're also looking at the possibility of an additional crosswalk further through the west on 2700,” he added
Numbers show how dangerous Utah roads can be for children:
The community was rocked on March 16 when 9-year-old Carly Hodson died from complications from a car accident at the intersection
can't even imagine how the parents feel,” said Mayor Phippen
Shaw said UDOT will continue to meet with the Farr West community to make the intersection safer
but added there is one thing that is outside their control
“We can do all the engineering in the world that we want
but one thing we can't engineer for is if somebody gets behind the wheel and they make a really poor decision,” Shaw said
“Mother to mother or neighbor to neighbor," Shupe said
"I don't think you have to have a student involved in this intersection to make sure that it's safe for them.“

FARR WEST — A crossing guard hoping to raise awareness about bad driver behavior at a busy intersection turned to a body camera and social media to help get his message across
Larry Antunez said Tuesday he had seen numerous drivers break the law and he had experienced several close calls at the intersection of 2700 N
that made him worry about the potential for an accident involving children at the school crossing
“This is the zebra stripes — you’ve got to wait for the crossing guard or the pedestrians,” Antunez told KSL TV
Both Wahlquist Junior High School and Farr West Elementary School are located near that intersection
and Antunez helps numerous school children to cross the roads safely
so I know how it feels for them to know that their kids are safe,” Antunez said
Antunez began sharing his close calls on the Farr West Community Facebook page in hopes of raising awareness of the situation
He also has pointed to accidents
the city placed a crossing guard at the intersection to make it as safe as possible
UDOT officials expressed interest in hearing about Antunez’ experiences at the intersection
Antunez said he hoped drivers would pay attention
and would wait for the crossings to be clear of people before proceeding
He said he wasn’t worried so much about his safety as he was others’
a garden center operating in northern Weber County for more than four decades
According to a Weber Fire District release on social media
crews were dispatched to a structure fire at the business — located at 1410 N
1800 West in Farr West — at approximately 1:15 a.m
Weber Fire was joined by units from Roy City Fire
Ogden City Fire and Hill Air Force Base Fire
Fire crews reportedly arrived “to visible flames.”
“Crews quickly declared a working incident
and no injuries were reported,” the release read
The scene has since been turned over to the Weber Fire District’s Fire Marshal’s Office for investigation
“We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the agencies that assisted in the efforts
ensuring a swift and coordinated response,” the release stated
In addition to the aforementioned agencies
Weber Area Dispatch and Weber County at large were tagged in the social media post

Farr West Engineering opened operations 18 years ago in Reno
with a mission to support rural utility districts in tracking and managing their assets
although Farr West's staff and customer base have grown exponentially
Farr West has continued to maintain a high customer retention rate and attributes much of its success to scalable digital mapping solutions
Farr West's first client is still a client today
Utilizing the latest geospatial technologies from Esri
Farr West consistently delivers high-quality projects
providing solutions that otherwise may be out of reach for many local utilities on their own
the Farr West GIS team is able to provide direct value to the company and is an integral part of the business
The process of digital transformation began around six years ago when the team at Farr West had a single license to a desktop GIS product and used file-based data storage
Farr West had a vision to provide "all of the amazing benefits of GIS" to its client in an affordable and scalable way
The GIS team began to realize that to do this
they needed to start modernizing their infrastructure
Integrating their data with other systems was challenging and time-consuming
and this was impacting their ability to deliver to their standards of quality and frequency
It also required more of the client's time to help support manual processes
such as walking an entire site and filling in blanks that were missing in their utility network model
the driver to build a GIS was to understand what assets the client had and what they were maintaining—'How many miles of sewer mains do we have and maintain?' and 'How much water system pipe do we have?'"
Soon clients were asking more detailed questions
applying for grants that required specific information
and determining their spending efforts based on these questions
Farr West began to research ways in which its clients could take advantage of more GIS capabilities—and potentially consolidate many products and tools into one to better support its clients
Because Farr West already had a system in place
the GIS team was determined to update their solution to be more dynamic
One driver was to support many users editing the same data
A second driver was the need for a quick and easy way to create web applications and visualizations to see data in real time
The team landed on a temporary solution but quickly ran into limitations
The front-end viewer wasn't linked to a database or back-end server
the viewer wasn't accessible on a mobile device
The AEC Project Delivery Subscription is a new way to deliver project work
Project Delivery Subscription allows organizations to quickly deploy GIS projects to their clients
allowing collaboration and sharing of information directly with stakeholders
and review workflows and assets in real time throughout the project life cycle
ensuring a high level of customer trust and satisfaction
The team members were eyeing new features and advancements in Esri technology and concluded they needed a comprehensive platform that would give their clients dynamic
real-time access to their data; rather than siloed products and taxing workflows
and construction (AEC) Project Delivery Subscription
Principal Engineer and Utility Planning Manager
"The big selling point was technology that was better
In using ArcGIS Enterprise
Farr West dramatically reduced the time required to deliver data to its clients
Directly connecting to web services for data and customizing applications with ease meant that Farr West could complete its work in a fraction of the time
but with Esri technology and the project delivery system in place
This greatly increased productivity within Farr West
enabling it to serve many more clients in the same amount of time
It also meant clients could take advantage of a suite of Esri applications on their computers and mobile devices to visualize their data
Utility staff appreciated these products because they were able to see photos
"That's key for them because they are able to tie what they see in person and on paper to what is shown digitally."
The transformation didn't just stop there, though. Farr West was growing as a business and needed something that could handle distributed data. Farr West leveraged distributed collaboration to share data from ArcGIS Enterprise to ArcGIS Online
This provided a trusted connection to share data immediately to ArcGIS Online and synchronize changes in real time
Taking many sets of data edited by many users and sharing it in ArcGIS Online
where Farr West provides its clients with access
Farr West operates 12 projects utilizing this framework
Keeping with the momentum, Farr West has many plans to continue growing its solutions. Future projects include field data collection in ArcGIS Online using ArcGIS Survey123
It is currently deploying ArcGIS Enterprise on behalf of its clients to allow use of ArcGIS Collector
Constantly innovating and pursuing new technology have allowed Farr West to scale to levels that weren't previously imagined
the GIS department has been able to provide direct business value to Farr West and is no longer considered just a supporting role in the company: GIS is part of every contract
Farr West will continue to provide new and existing clients with applications and features that help their business while continuing to create efficiencies within the company
but it is gratifying that we are getting to a point where we can be self-sustaining in bringing additional business into the company."

The crash occurred near 2700 North as a Jeep Wrangler was getting onto I-15 southbound when it rear-ended a Ford Explorer in front of it "for an unknown reason," said Utah Highway Patrol Lt
"That crash sent the Jeep to the left
into the main flow of I-15 where it got hit by a semi," Roden said
sending that vehicle over the wall and into traffic on I-15 northbound
an adult woman who wasn't wearing a seat belt
was taken to a hospital by medical helicopter in critical condition
"They are treating it as if it were a fatal crash
just to document everything," Roden said
All other occupants of the Jeep suffered minor injuries and were not taken to a hospital
in addition to the left lane on I-15 northbound
was closed for around two hours on Friday before reopening around 10:30 a.m.

SALT LAKE CITY — Farr West residents are asking for more safety protocols at an intersection after a 9-year-old girl died following a car accident there.
The 2000 West and 2700 North intersection is right by Farr West Elementary School
Farr West resident Emily Shupe is worried about her kids and their classmates
If you miss that light and blast through it
someone is going to get injured at that high of speed,” said Shupe
Shupe and other residents voiced their concerns at a city council meeting Thursday night and asked the city for help
“We asked for an additional crossing guard
I don’t know if that’s feasible
We asked for an additional police presence
I know that they’ve been there in the weeks following the accident
which has been super helpful,” said Shupe
Farr West Mayor Ken Phippen said the roads are under the Utah Department of Transportation’s jurisdiction
so they are limited in the things they can do
But one of the ways they’ve tried to make the area safer is by stationing a crossing guard at the intersection
“It’s almost ironic that we need a crossing guard at a light at an intersection,” said Phippen
It will be lowering the speed limit on 2700 North from 45 mph to 40 mph
“Lowering the speed limit at the section near this intersection is going to help
we’ll continue to monitor it,” said Mitch Shaw with UDOT
Shupe was hoping both roads in that intersection would get a speed reduction. So far UDOT does not have plans to reduce the speed on 2000 West
Shaw said drivers bear a lot of the responsibility for how dangerous the intersection has become
“We can do all the engineering in the world but if people are going to make just really poor decisions behind the wheel
that limits the effectiveness of what we do,” said Shaw

Utah (KUTV) — A structure was severely damaged in an early-morning Farr West fire
Crews with the Weber Fire District were dispatched to the scene at approximately 1:15 a.m
and Hill Air Force Base fire departments assisted
they saw visible flames and searched the area

Utah — A community in Weber County is trying to bring about change in an intersection they worry is dangerous
as parents and a local crossing guard attempt to make improvements to 2700 North and 2000 West
"[I] like to help the community and be where I can,” said Larry Antunez
Antunez is a Farr West crossing guard who helps kids in the mornings and evenings as they get to and from the school
Not all heroes wear capes – Antunez is one of them
He wears his safety vest and has his stop sign in hand
With an elementary school and junior high close by
Antunez helps students cross the street at the busy intersection
but he’s scared for himself and the kids walking there
I feel helpless because I can’t help them 100 percent," he explained
Antunez wears a body cam and posts about some of his close calls
which have received the attention of parents like Emily Shupe
"Our kids are the most important thing that we have,” said Shupe
“Being able to access safe ways to get to school should be of top of everyone's lists.”
Shupe attendwd Thursday night's Farr West City Council meeting agenda and voiced some of her concerns
"Concerns about the safety of this intersection have been brought up by the community
administration of Farr West elementary for years,” added Shupe
Even though it is a Utah Department of Transportation intersection
"Reducing the speed will make a huge difference in fatal accident rates at this intersection,” said Shupe
implementing an advance warning flash would help notify drivers that they are approaching a red light."
UDOT tells FOX 13 News they are considering reducing the speed limit at that intersection
There were also suggestions of adding flags to cross and educating drivers that this intersection has a zebra crosswalk - which means that you can’t drive into it if there is someone crossing
City council members want to do something about it
"These are great ideas that we can take to them
and I think we should,” said Farr West assistant Mayor Boyd Ferrin
“We are going to need the public's support behind this
So your voice here tonight is very important.”
“Treat it like your kids were going to school.”

FARR WEST — Some parents and members of the community in Farr West raised concerns last week amid reports that students were sent home and/or suspended from Wahlquist Junior High School on Wednesday for wearing American flags as capes
With tensions running high following the events of Election Day
discussion about the situation was heated on social media
with some claiming that students were “punished for being patriotic,” while others speculated about what might have occurred and how many children may have faced discipline as a result
Weber School District’s community relations specialist
told the Standard-Examiner that three students wore flags as capes at the school Wednesday morning
but he stressed that none were suspended or subjected to other disciplinary action for doing so
He said that the students initially drew the attention of administrators by singing “an impromptu version of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner'” in the halls and were later asked to put the flags away
with a districtwide costume policy being cited
“A lot of our schools used to have their own dress codes
so the district last year went through and created a districtwide dress code that schools use
hopefully it’s a little bit more uniform and there’s more consistency in how it’s applied at the different schools,” Findlay said
“But these issues come up pretty regularly when we’re talking about dress code with kids.”
The district’s policy for “Student Dress and Grooming Standards,” which can be read online
states that certain items are prohibited at school and school activities
Included on the list are “grooming or dress that causes actual disruption” and “costumes or costume accessories,” except on “designated holidays.”
students were initially receptive when asked to remove their capes
but they put them back on later in the school day and stated that they would continue to wear them
trips to the principal’s office and meetings with parents
Findlay said the matter was later discussed by district officials
it’s not something that the administration is going to necessarily enforce in the future
it would just be case by case,” Findlay said
there have been a few kids wearing the American flag and
unless it’s causing problems or disruption
it’s just not something that we’re going to address given the nature of it.”
Findlay also emphasized that students’ First Amendment rights are protected at school
but that there are also certain limitations where issues of safety and disruption of the learning process are concerned
the school sent an email to parents addressing the situation and concerns about free speech
“It has come to our attention that concerns have been raised regarding students’ free exercise of their political speech at school
We want to assure you that as the Supreme Court said in Tinker v
students maintain their First Amendment rights at school
The Court explained that while students ‘do not shed their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse gates,’ there are limitations at school where students’ speech and/or symbolic speech creates a substantial and material disruption to the educational environment,” the email read
“We encourage students to engage in civil political discourse and display an enthusiasm for our political processes
especially during such a critical time as a presidential election
and we ask that you remind your students to engage in that process and display that enthusiasm in a respectful non-disruptive manner
Should students engage in conduct that is disruptive to the educational environment
even if it is conduct that is political in nature
administrators will address the conduct and
“Presidential elections can be great opportunities for students to learn about and express excitement about our country’s democratic processes
and we do not want to quash a student’s learning or excitement
For your information and to clear up any confusion
no students were suspended yesterday or today concerning these events
But we need students to remember that disruptions to the school environment make it difficult for others to learn and express excitement.”
Fire officials say there were no injuries reported following a commerical warehouse fire Saturday night in Farr West
BY MARK JONES
FARR WEST — Fire officials say there were no injuries reported following a commerical warehouse fire Saturday night in Farr West
Emergency personnel were first notified of the fire around 8:45 p.m
When crews arrived on scene, they discovered “heavy black smoke and flames billowing from doors and windows on all sides,” according to a Facebook post by the Weber Fire District
The inside of the building was badly damaged
The heat was so extreme inside the building that the metal rafters were warped
causing unsafe conditions and making firefighting efforts difficult,” the post further stated
told KSL TV that the fire is still causing issues for crews
He said there is a spot between the wood ceiling and the roof that keeps “glowing like embers” and it catches on fire
Reed said that it is producing smoke because of the wind in the area
Because of the severity of the damage from the fire
Reed said crews may need heavy equipment to remove to the roof so they can gain access to the hot spot
Reed said there was an explosion that nearly blew the garage door off
The fire damage was contained to the original unit
Fire officials said the unit is a total loss
The cause of the fire is under investigation

A peaceful, fenced-in patch of land located several miles north of Kingston, Missouri, belies the violent and conflict-ridden nature of its history. For a brief time, Far West was the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
and Joseph Smith himself relocated there in 1838
This marked site was to be the location of a new temple
fear that Smith’s followers would soon outnumber local citizens—plus misunderstandings about doctrines of the church—led to escalating conflicts
This culminated with the Missouri governor issuing an order directing the militia to treat the Mormons “as enemies [who] must be exterminated or driven from the State if necessary for the public peace.” The main body of the church was then forced to sign over their property in Far West

Weber County — A woman was critically injured in a crash on Interstate 15 near Ogden Friday
Cam Roden with UHP said the crash occurred on I-15 at the 2700 North on-ramp
The crash involved a Jeep that was entering the southbound ramp
the Jeep rear-ended a Ford Explorer in front of it
The semitruck then veered left and hit a Kia Optima and forced it over the concrete barrier
landing in a northbound lane on the other side
Roden said the woman driving the Jeep was not wearing a seatbelt and was taken to a nearby hospital by helicopter in critical condition
All other drivers involved in the crash sustained only minor injuries
causing major traffic delays in the area and up to approximately 10 miles north
The roadway was cleared approximately 2 hours later
Editor’s note: UHP initially believed the woman who was critically injured was driving the Kia
This story has since been updated to correctly reflect the woman was driving the Jeep

Utah — The flag says it all outside the Patterson home in Farr West
It’s a house divided over one of college football’s biggest rivalries
9-year-old Aubrey and12- 12-year-old Mason
have bragging rights on the line when BYU and Utah renew their football rivalry
Their attire is a giveaway for which team they’re rooting for
And in years past — whether at the game or watching on TV — it can get a little heated
“Especially if like they’re both scoring touchdowns left and right
we’re just really going at each other,” said Mason
Russell and Keri Patterson introduced their children to the rivalry at a young age
just to send the family photos and then it kind of became: 'I am gonna do this every year,'” said Keri
Both Aubrey and Mason have grown to enjoy the contests when the Cougars and Utes meet head-to-head on the gridiron
they won’t let the score hurt their relationship
but then we calm it down and just have fun with each other,” said Aubrey

Image of the structure fire in a commercial warehouse at 2000 West
BY EMMA KEDDINGTON
Utah — A structure fire caused severe damage to a commercial warehouse in Farr West
David Reed with the Weber Fire District said the fire is still causing problems for crews
as there is a spot between the ceiling and the roof of the warehouse that keeps “glowing like embers.”
Crews are having a hard time accessing the area
due to how intense the damage from Saturday night’s initial fire was.
until they can get a better assessment Monday
crews from several surrounding areas responded to a fire at a warehouse on 2000 West
Those crews included dispatches from:
“Crews arrived to find heavy black smoke and flames billowing from doors and windows on all sides,” Weber Fire District said in a Facebook post
causing unsafe conditions and making firefighting efforts difficult.”
Reed said the fire was so hot it was unsafe to get inside
The extreme heat from the fire even warped the metal rafters of the building.
The fire left the warehouse “at a total loss,” but no injuries were reported
The adjoining unit received smoke damage but the fire did not spread.
Reed said there was one big explosion Saturday night that blew the garage door almost completely off
The cause of the explosion is unknown at this time.
Reed also said this was possibly a wood working shop.
This is a developing story and may be updated.

OGDEN — A housing development in the works in Weber County calls for a portion of the planned homes to be priced more moderately and earmarked for first-time homebuyers
"Attainability is what this is all about
and I think this is a great step forward," said Weber County Commissioner Sharon Bolos
South Ogden-based Nilson Homes is spearheading the JDC Ranch Properties development on some 240 acres of what was once farmland just west of Farr West
The proposal has been in the works since at least 2022
and county commissioners on Tuesday approved an amendment to the development agreement
allowing for the addition of 275 more "attainable" homes to the proposal
Nilson had proposed a 725-unit development
and Tuesday's amendment boosts the potential number of homes that can be built on the property to 1,000 — a figure that includes 100 to 200 town homes
"Homeownership is a big problem right now in Utah
These attainable homes are something we're very excited about," Bryan Bayles
He said Nilson has been working with Steve Waldrip
which aim to bolster the pool of affordable housing stock in Utah
the homes would be on the smaller side and priced at $330,000 to $400,000
First priority in selling them would be given to first-time homebuyers
Deed restrictions of 10 years would be placed on the homes to prevent their acquisition by large corporations and conversion into rental housing
either no basement or no finished basement in there," said Tammy Aydelotte
a planner in the Weber County Planning Division
Bayles said Tuesday that the other "market rate" homes in JDC Ranch would be priced starting at $500,000
with the "attainable" homes mixed among the varied units
"You won't be able to tell the difference
One will be a little smaller," he said
When addressing the county commissioners on the plans in 2022
Bayles said the price tag for some JDC Ranch homes would be as high as $1 million
As part of his presentation to county commissioners, Bayles played clips of Cox addressing the housing issue at a press conference at a Nilson Homes development in West Haven last December
Cox was highlighting an initiative to address the housing crunch and fight homelessness
the single greatest threat to our future prosperity
the American dream and our strong communities is the price of housing," Cox said at the December event
"Our kids will never be able to call Utah home if we don't start building starter homes again."
The Nilson Homes website says JDC Ranch homes are to come available starting in the spring of 2025
The development is to feature homes "for all stages of life," reads the website

OGDEN — There is a tradition at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden for medical staff to line up for patients who get to go home after a long stay
when it was Molly Leavitt’s turn Friday morning
those cheers might have been a little extra loud
she was ejected out of the vehicle about six or eight feet
After being hit by a semi-truck,” said Molly’s husband Curtis Leavitt
It is an image he can’t get out of his head
He was just a few minutes behind her that October day at the 2700 North on-ramp in the Ogden-Farr West area
I was there when the helicopter landed and took off with her
One of the toughest things anyone could ever experience.”
“They didn’t think she would make it through the weekend,” Leavitt said
Molly Leavitt surrounded by family in the hospital
She got better, started walking and talking
she got the final approval to go home to her house in Pleasant View
a welcome feeling,” Molly Leavitt said just before leaving the hospital
“I am a little nervous to go back to regular life
As her husband pushed her in her wheelchair down the hallway one last time
and other medical staff lined the hallway to cheer her on
Molly got even more excited when she got to the main entrance doors and saw almost 50 of her friends waiting for her
Many of them were holding “Molly Strong” signs
while others clapped and cheered as soon as they saw her
“Once you know her and you have her in your life
we can’t imagine a world without her in it and we are grateful that she is here,” Jeni Phillips said
Phillips became friends with Molly Leavitt when she was her daughter’s elementary school teacher a couple of years ago
“She is a special person and we love her dearly,” Phillips said
“She has built up a village and to see that village come out today
Leavitt knows she still has a lot of rehabilitation to do
it is clear she will not go through it alone
“I think it is what has got me through the last two months,” Molly Leavitt said
“They have been there through everything and through the times that I was not there for myself that they were there to lift me.”

Our family has been incredibly lucky to have both of our sons have her as their 3rd grade teacher
and her classroom is such a safe space for students to flourish and really come into their own
Our youngest son really struggled with going and being at school… it was a lot of “my stomach hurts”

He literally didn’t want to miss days
I even heard similar stories from parents of other students in her class

She has a warmth about her that is just beyond special and being a teacher is her calling
The amount of care she has for each and every student that passes thru her classroom.
