building and the surrounding property into a large town center near the 17-92 and 436 flyover by Fernwood Boulevard and Oxford Road But that development would include a 2,000 square foot poker room.  The jai alai building used to be a sports betting facility and neighbors in Fern Park worked hard to get rid of the gambling and the strip clubs that used to surround it.  Now the owner RD Management and the Cordish Companies want to put a sports and gaming venue here along with luxury apartments But the Cordish Companies say their involvement is contingent on securing approval for the poker room.   Since this would be an expansion of the types of gambling allowed on the property they would need to get a measure to allow the poker room on the general election ballot in November and it would have to approved by Seminole County voters.  the companies would need to get 25,000 resident signatures on a petition but they asked the Seminole County Board of Commissioners to skip that process and put it on the ballot.  But after many neighbors got up to speak out against the development Commissioner Lee Constantine echoed resident concerns and said the petition process would help the community learn more about the project.  and Mr. Sowsinki of No Casinos brought this up is that this could be an avenue to add more gaming Now I’m not suggesting that’s what they have in mind We just don’t know,” Constantine said.  Now the developers have stressed that this venue is not a casino and they have no plans to expand gambling past that poker room.  The current tenant of the old sports betting building is the type that Fern Park neighbors would prefer to stay here part of a group that help create a sense of community Journey Church moved into the building a little less than a year ago they've fixed up and renovated the space to make it hospitable for their worshippers.   While he’s passionate on stage during the service he’s just as passionate about mentoring and guiding his congregation in the lobby right after the service.  and his team started Journey Church five years ago but he’ll be the first to tell you that in those five years it hasn’t been easy to find a permanent home.  then during the pandemic we transitioned to online then finally this building made itself available,” he said.  He says this location has enabled them to do a lot of good in the surrounding community like volunteering at and donating money to the local elementary school as well as helping the homeless who’d been living at the property when it was blighted.  all with the help of members in this church,” Reyes said.  Residents welcome this kind of impact after working for years to get rid of the gambling that the building was known for.  “We actually had someone come in a couple weeks ago and try to place a bet because they thought it was the old betting area So it’s really to be able to bring a reputation to the space of positively impacting the community,” Vasquez said.  The proposed Oxford Town Center development is threatening to force the church to move again.  “We would be homeless for a little bit,” Vasquez said.  The owners have the option come March 1 to buy the church out of the remaining two years of their lease which according to these development plans the church would have 6 months to relocate says they’d love to stay and continue to grow.  “We have a whole third floor we haven’t even renovated yet that we would love to turn into an after school space for teenagers,” he said.  He says he knows it’s unlikely they’ll get to stay despite the work they’ve done here in the community in just a year.  then we’re ready to go wherever that is next,” Vasquez said.  The current developers can't go ahead with the plans unless they decide to either ditch the poker room or get the 25,000 signatures from Seminole County residents needed to put it on the ballot.  with its proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park Many of the waterfalls can be reached easily but some require more advanced abilities and more difficult treks All of the following but the last one are waterfalls found within Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). This means you’ll pay admission to visit the park and dogs are not permitted on the trails. If you’re looking for a dog-friendly waterfall hike near Estes Park we recommend the longer hike listed last out to Isabelle Glacier Here are the best waterfalls near RMNP and Estes Park Alberta Falls is reached by a short, 0.8 mile hike on a gentle, easy trail in Rocky Mountain National Park This spectacular waterfall on Glacier Creek is one of the most popular hiking spots in the park Most visitors should be able to complete this gentle hike The easiest way to reach the falls is by taking the free shuttle bus that the park offers as the road to drive there and the parking area may be very busy The waterfall can be reached by hiking up Bear Lake Trailhead or taking the Loch Vale Trail from the Glacier Gorge Junction Trailhead Horseshoe Falls is another easy-to-reach waterfall near Estes Park in RMNP It’s located about 0.4 miles from the Alluvial Fan Trailhead along a short The waterfall flows in a horseshoe-like shape Signs along the trail provide information about the Lawn Lake flood of 1982 which swept massive amounts of rock down the river and created Horseshoe Falls and the Alluvial Fan Another flood in 2013 caused significant damage to the trail but it’s still not difficult to reach the falls The water is shallow and you can walk through or rock hop across the water in different places which can be fun for kids The East Alluvial Fan Trailhead is located about 0.5 miles up Endovalley Road and the West Alluvial Fan Trailhead is just 0.25 miles further If the parking areas at the trailheads fill up less than 10 minute walk from either trailhead The drive is very scenic but is not for the faint of heart Chasm Falls is just a short distance away down a paved path This can be a nice snowshoe trip in the wintertime but usually involves starting from the West Alluvial Fan parking lot and hiking in Most visitors start their trip from the Endovalley Picnic Area in Rocky Mountain National Park Drive 2.1 miles on Highway 34 from the Fall River Entrance Station Make a right turn onto Endovalley Road and the picnic area is just under 2 miles down the road walk or drive up Old Fall River Road to the Chasm Falls Trailhead Parking at both the trailhead and the picnic area can fill up fast These three waterfalls are all along the same trail making them easy to combine into one day trip You can choose the distance and difficulty level that you are up for as you can stop and turn around whenever you’d like along this out and back trail The waterfalls are located in the southeast corner of Rocky Mountain National Park in a lovely area known as Wild Basin The trailhead has a ranger station with drinking water and restrooms Copeland Falls is located 0.3 miles from the trailhead Calypso Cascades at the 1.8 mile mark and Ouzel Falls is reached by hiking 2.7 miles (one way) there are a number of mountain lakes you can visit Copeland Falls is the first waterfall that you will come to Both the upper and lower section of the falls are accessible via side trails you can return the way you came or continue along these side trails to connect to the main Wild Basin Trail to see more waterfalls Calypso Cascades is a bit further along the trail but the difficulty of the hike remains easy you can enjoy the blooming Calypso Orchids along the creek you can continue on the Finch Lake Trail for about a mile to see Ouzel Falls 40-foot waterfall cascading down the rocks makes for a beautiful sight The hike from Calypso Cascades to Ouzel Falls is a bit more difficult than the hike to reach the other two falls as you are ascending via a series of switchbacks The trailhead is located in the southeast corner of the park near the town of Allenspark Take highway 7 out of Estes Park until you reach County Road 84 Turn right here and then take another right hand turn at Hwy 115 after about a half mile During winter this road isn’t always maintained meaning you’ll have to park at a winter parking lot and hike in the road is passable by regular 2WD vehicles Fern Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Rocky Mountain National Park It’s accessed by a moderate hike from the Fern Lake Trailhead 60-foot waterfall is a nice destination in its own right and is a good place to take a break if you are hiking to some of the lakes further along the trail The hike to reach the falls is enjoyable and scenic as it traces the route of the Big Thompson River It winds through a section of interesting large boulders and offers access to another hidden waterfall the Windy Gulch cascades along a short spur trail you might as well hike a bit further to see Fern Lake the trail continues to make a long loop (more than 15 miles) and passes several beautiful lakes Snow remains on higher sections of this trail until late Spring and early summer depending on the year Author note: My husband and I got engaged on this trail 7.5 years ago at Lake Odessa The trail begins at the Fern Lake Trailhead in Rocky Mountain National Park you can park at the Park & Ride and take the park shuttle to the Fern Lake Bus Stop and hike to the trail (just under one mile) Do not park along Fern Lake Road as cars are frequently ticketed 100 foot waterfall that cascades into a gorgeous valley in Rocky Mountain National Park The falls are reached by a challenging 4 mile hike (one way) through the beautiful Glacier Gorge area of Rocky Mountain National Park you’ll travel up through the gorgeous Loch Vale area A moderately challenging series of switchbacks will take you up to The Loch the trail up to Timberline Falls gets much more difficult as you work your way up through higher levels of the forest A set of fairly steep stone steps climb about 200 feet in 0.15 miles to the base of the falls so you can expect to be out of breath at this point There are two spectacular lakes located above the falls Reaching the lakes requires a somewhat technical climb up a very steep often slick trail on the right side of the waterfall Some portions of the climb may have water flowing over the rocks and you’ll have to use all four limbs to climb It shouldn’t be attempted by those who aren’t prepared to do so Timberline Falls is reached by hiking from the Glacier Gorge Trailhead The trailhead is located along Bear Lake Road about 8 miles from the intersection with 36 so utilizing the park shuttle may be a good idea Ribbon Falls is created by water flowing over the edge of Black Lake into Glacier Creek The waterfall isn’t huge but it’s unique in its beauty and located in a fairly isolated section of the park where you aren’t likely to see many other hikers You’ll have to take on a few sections that are barely maintained as you hike nearly 5 miles each way to reach the falls the surrounding scenery is rewarding and there’s a chance to see several other unnamed waterfalls along the route The hike to Ribbon Falls will pass several other exciting attractions including Alberta Falls (see above) The trail becomes more difficult and much less maintained after Black Lake but there are other lakes and waterfalls even higher along the trail if you have the energy and skill to continue on You can reach Ribbon Falls from either Glacier Gorge Trailhead or Bear Lake Trailhead but if both trailhead parking lots are full you can park at the Park & Ride and take the park shuttle to the trailhead the Isabelle Glacier and surrounding peaks of the Niwot Range will be your reward The trail is easy to follow and moderate in difficulty The waterfall is located right on the main trail between Lake Isabelle and the Isabelle Glacier The trail has snowpack from September-June so it’s best to visit in late summer when the route is lined with an abundance of wildflowers Even though most of the 8.1 mile trail is in the Indian Peaks Wilderness the hike begins in the Brainard Lake Recreation Area at the Long Lake Trailhead follow Pawnee Pass Trail for two miles through the forest The trail will pass the waterfall and then end just beside the glacier If conditions are good you can go out on the glacier Hopefully, you’ve found a great waterfall hike to go on near Estes Park, Colorado. Remember if you visit Rocky Mountain National Park, your four-legged companion(s) won’t be able to join you on the trail. Twisted Fern is located in Park City’s Snow Creek Shopping Center but this is far from your average strip mall dining spot the restaurant is located on the far east end of the shopping center with views of wild nature especially from the shady courtyard located on the side of the restaurant You’d actually see and hear more traffic sitting on a Main Street dining deck than you do at Twisted Fern No need to fight and pay for a space like in Old Town I was a little surprised to learn that Ross’ previous gig was as chef at Bistro 412 a perfectly fine restaurant but a French-style bistro that wasn’t exactly known for its uniqueness Take the starters section of the dinner menu with offerings like smoked eggplant Caprese salad ($10) crispy garlic and sesame chickpeas ($4) and confit of chicken wings with housemade sriracha Even something as simple as housemade potato chips are special but totally addictive whiskey-French onion dip My wife and I nearly came to fisticuffs over the third piece of the blackened octopus appetizer we shared My first thought about blackened octopus was “There is a lot that can go wrong here.” But I was the one in the wrong I had fully expected the octopus to be tough and chewy having been first marinated and cryovaced in a red wine bath with cinnamon You’re thinking the same thing I was: octopus and cinnamon Hugo Coffee-rubbed lardons and mild roasted garlic Folks with dietary restrictions – particularly those looking to dine gluten-free – will love Twisted Fern And four of those five dishes failed the gluten-free test because they contained bread or in the case of a baked goat cheese appetizer the Drake’s Family Farms chevre is served with yummy stick bread with General Manager Eamon McCormick keeping a keen friendly eye on things and servers like Jess topping off wine glasses and answering tricky questions about the eclectic menu This is a small restaurant with an equally small when he began experimenting in his mom’s bakery “Eight-year-olds weren’t allowed to prepare baked goods for human customers so Adam honed his skills creating dog treats,” which came to be known as Adam’s Dog Biscuits that’s how I was feeling while loving Ross’ Shorty Melt ($16) an open-face braised short rib sandwich on toasted rye bread with Gruyere cheese The shredded meat from the short ribs was ridiculously tender and I loved everything about this sandwich including the slightly sweet garlic pickles the Shorty Melt comes with what just might be the best French fries I’ve had in Utah My wife was equally pleased with her tasty trout entree ($26) featuring fresh trout from Southern Utah with pickled ramps and ramp butter we were celebrating my birthday and our anniversary (we got married on my birthday so I never forget the date of our anniversary!) And Eamon insisted that we enjoy a dessert on the house since it was one of the best desserts I’ve gotten my lips around in quite a while dark chocolate brownie with Wasatch Creamery ice cream blackberries and strawberries – truly delightful innovative … all those words describe the food and vibe at Twisted Fern this isn’t just one of Park City’s best restaurants I’m not sure how the Fernridge Park was held on Sept From left: Town Manager Matt Hart; Town Council member Ben Wenograd; Friends of Fernridge Park founder Esther Spigel; Leisure and Social Service Director Helen Rubino-Turco A significant donation to the Fernridge Park project came with naming rights co-creator of “Parks & Rec” and a West Hartford native chose to name it after the main character on the popular show Plaque dedicating the Leslie Knope Promenade at Fernridge Park West Hartford’s Fernridge Park has a special place in the heart of Michael Schur and anyone who has ever watched the hit TV show he co-created Indiana’s Deputy Parks and Recreation Department Director Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) When Schur learned about the fundraising efforts for a promenade at Fernridge Park – one of the final phases of an ongoing project to improve the park – he readily agreed to make a donation you could name the promenade,” Helen Rubino-Turco director of West Hartford’s Leisure and Social Services Department but only if you name the promenade after Leslie Knope,'” said Rubino-Turco director of Leisure Services and Social Services for the Town of West Hartford speaks at the Leslie Knope Promenade dedication which was dedicated during a small ceremony on Saturday also includes a plaque with a quote attributable to Knope: “Let’s embark on a new journey Promotional photograph of Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) found from the NBC “city of pawnee” site who graduated from Hall High School in 1993 and Harvard in 1997 co-created Parks and Recreation with Greg Daniels ending not because it was canceled but because the creators Some of Schur’s other Hollywood credits included writing for Saturday Night Live and more recently creator of Brooklyn Ninety-Nine and The Good Place and his family home backed up to Fernridge Park,” said Rubino-Turco one of the original founders of Friends of Fernridge Park told We-Ha.com that Schur has been involved with the organization since its inception She does plan to send him photos of Saturday night’s dedication COVID-19 not only put a damper on Schur’s ability to attend the event but also impacted the original plans for the celebration “We were going to have a waffle truck,” Spigel said – a nod to Leslie Knope’s favorite food And they were thinking about having a miniature horse at the event one of the founders of Friends of Fernridge Park speaks at the dedication of the Leslie Knope Promenade Spigel said she couldn’t imagine a better name for the promenade – noting that it’s a bit different from what’s happening in Danbury where the town was the butt of a joke by comedian John Oliver and in response Mayor Mark Boughton is considering naming the sewage treatment plant after him (with Oliver’s endorsement) a member of the board of Friends of Fernridge Park worked for West Hartford’s Leisure Services Department back when it was called the Parks and Recreation Department He grew up spending time in the park and was eventually the park supervisor He served as emcee of Saturday night’s dedication ceremony “This park creates a lot of friendships,” Krum said Mayor Shari Cantor also attended the dedication “It really is a fun way to dedicate a very special project,” she said “We are so excited and moved by your passion,” she said to Spigel and the rest of the Friends of Fernridge organization Mayor Shari Cantor speaks at the dedication of the Leslie Knope Promenade has been coming to Fernridge Park her whole life I did relate to Leslie a little bit,” Cantor said She read aloud one of her favorite quotes from the show a message that Leslie Knope sent to herself that Cantor said has really resonated throughout the pandemic and recent power outage: “Hey Leslie Bye.” Cantor said she reads it sometimes as a reminder Rubino-Turco said at the dedication that the Friends of Fernridge Park which has donated more than $35,000 toward improvements to the park is a great example of a public-private partnership and building stewardship We hope to finish or at least try and connect and make the circle whole … These changes are made possible by the neighborhood,” Rubino-Turco said Friends of Fernridge Park has been engaged in activities to improve the neighborhood park since the 501(c)(3) nonprofit was formed nearly a decade ago with the goal of supporting “the betterment and continued beauty of Fernridge Park.” I can hardly get my head around it,” Town Manager Matt Hart said at Saturday’s dedication He joked that his local government colleagues around the country are probably pretty envious and said that many of the story lines on Parks and Recreation are only two or three steps removed from the truth Town Manager Matt Hart said many of the story lines in Parks and Rec are “only two or three times removed” from truth our parks … they’re part of the heart and soul of our community,” Hart said “We are so fortunate to live in a place like this one of the premier suburbs not only in Connecticut but in the country.” “Leslie Knope is a hyper competent and incredibly enthusiastic public servant who loves her job and waffles,” Spigel said at the dedication you can take the combination any way you want because she did but she always full of really positive attitude and could get things done.” Knope believed that persistence and hard work could get things done for the good of the community a role model for young people who are searching for positive role models in a world that seems more divisive The plan to upgrade Fernridge Park was developed by Peter Minutti who collaborated with the town and Friends of Fernridge Park – which split the bill and the community outreach efforts that led to the project’s overall success also a joint effort between the Friends and the town a wide paved area that encircles the pool house in the center of the park from which all of the spokes – the pathways – branch out through the park to neighborhood streets Spigel officially thanked Schur for his donation and thanked Rubino-Turco for her support and Miniutti for his vision for the park “This is the first step in achieving this vision,” Spigel said Wide pathways encircle most of the pool house at Fernridge Park forming the Leslie Knope Promenade and connecting the spokes of other paths that lead to the neighborhood streets “I want to thank all of the Friends of Fernridge Park,” Spigel said thanking those who donated their time and money She would be so thrilled with the Friends of Fern “We share Leslie’s passion and commitment to our small piece of the world.” And paraphrasing Knope  “It’s time to embark on the steps of the journey and see where they take us.” Friends of Fernridge Park’s fundraising efforts recently also led to a significant matching grant from Sustainable CT, used for landscaping and are also building local stewardship related to the park,” Rubino-Turco said The enhanced relationship neighbors feel for a park help keep it safer The success of the Friends of Fernridge Park model will serve as blueprint for its successor “The West Hartford Parks Foundation will include all of the parks and celebrating the value of public green space,” Rubino-Turco said In the future she hopes to hold some type of gala fundraiser who has been in her Leisure Services role for the past eight years The Parks Foundation has been one of her longterm goals has grown out of the work I have been doing for the last eight years and more recently with the 10-minute walk,” Rubino-Turco said Last October, West Hartford’s participation in the “10-Minute Walk” campaign culminated with a ceremony and tree-planting. The 10-Minute Walk campaign a national effort organized jointly by the Trust for Public Land and the National Recreation and Park Association is based on the goal of everyone living within a 10-minute walk of a public park Dedication of the Leslie Knope Promenade at Fernridge Park “I am very proud of all our accomplishments over the years,” Rosemary DaCunha the longtime president of Friends of Fernridge Park She was sad to miss the dedication due to an out-of-town obligation “Much has been undertaken with our own sweat equity or connections who were subject matter experts and eager to participate in our projects We raised our funding by ourselves with generous support from family None of us had any experience in running such a nonprofit or the operational side of it (especially the fundraising!) but we figured it out and were successful DaCunha said she would love to see the transition of Friends of Fernridge Park into the West Hartford Parks Foundation by next spring “The board values its partnership with the Town of West Hartford and we are proud of the work we have accomplished to foster that relationship and demonstrate the effectiveness of a private/public collaboration,” said DaCunha talent and treasure with considerable assistance and support from our many neighbors and friends and the town We recognize that we have nurtured our park advocacy organization to a point where it is time to launch it into a larger We have been a success story to showcase once again the value of a collaborative partnership where groups can come together Like what you see here? Click here to subscribe to We-Ha’s newsletter so you’ll always be in the know about what’s happening in West Hartford Click the blue button below to become a supporter of We-Ha.com and our efforts to continue producing quality journalism a former employee of West Hartford’s Parks and Recreation Department (now called Leisure Services) served as emcee at the dedication […] On Saturday evening I was very excited to attend the dedication of the Leslie Knope Promenade at Fernridge Park I didn’t start off watching Parks and Recreation when it was originally on NBC but after years of my kids comparing me to Leslie Knope I started binge watching during the pandemic and LOVE the show And the more I watched the more I could see why my kids made the comparison (which I have embraced and taken it as a compliment) And if you wonder why on earth West Hartford has an element of one of its parks named after a TV character and website in this browser for the next time I comment Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" © 2025 • WeHa News • All Rights Reserved • Ezoic Privacy Policy - Created by Roy Web Design Contact: Stephen Troy Download the NPS app to navigate the parks on the go The Met Gala wasn’t the only big fashion moment this week.
