the empty Firestone building is being reimagined through a large-scale
The Firestone: An Artist Takeover invites residents and visitors to experience how creativity can transform urban spaces with a full day of public art-making
and community activities scheduled for Saturday
in partnership with the City of Seattle and the One Seattle Graffiti Team
the Firestone art project aims to showcase the power of public art to activate underutilized spaces
More than 20 local artists have been commissioned to participate
and experiences both inside and outside the former Firestone at 1145 NW Market Street
providing an opportunity for emerging muralists to gain experience with large-scale outdoor work
a diverse group of artists will present site-specific installations designed to engage visitors and encourage reflection on the role of art in public life
interactive exploration of how art can breathe energy into transitional spaces
“The Firestone is an invitation for the public to contemplate buildings
and the impact of art in our city,” said Asis
“This exhibition brings together community
and government to show the unique ability of the creative community to transform underutilized urban conditions into profound and memorable public experiences.”
In addition to viewing the murals and installations
attendees can participate in a free community paint jam throughout the day on May 17
and the event will feature live music to create a festival-like atmosphere open to all ages
the Firestone project will continue to host periodic reactivations and events through the summer
The goal is not only to enliven the space temporarily
but also to spark broader conversations about the future of public spaces in rapidly changing neighborhoods like Ballard
The Firestone building, constructed in 1973, has been a fixture along NW Market Street for decades. However, it is slated for demolition as part of a broader wave of development. Plans call for a 7-story
122-unit apartment building with ground-floor retail and parking for 73 vehicles

FARGO — Chris Hawley and Mike Dawson love a challenge
the owners/partners and principal architects behind Craftwell Architecture + Construction insist the messier and more complex a project is
“We talked so long about building a new space somewhere and in the scheme of things
the west half of the 14,000-square-foot space had been transformed into the sleek
modern headquarters for their design and build firm
“It’s easy to do adaptive reuse on a pretty building,” Hawley says
“It’s really hard to do adaptive reuse on an ugly one
the former tire store/garage threw many monkey wrenches into their process
Not surprising for a building that Dawson calls "a Frankenstein." That is
the new and all of the quirky things he and Hawley loved
Case in point: The sloping angles of the parking garage overhead meant the ceilings are tipped at different angles and varying heights
They also needed to design floating ceilings with slip connections
which allows them to move as much as 3 inches within the precast concrete shell of the building
the flexing of the ceiling would crush the wall/ceiling connections and damage the interior finishes and possibly damage the ramp,” Hawley says
the shop’s seven hydraulic bays required excavating huge cubes of earth to ensure all the hydraulic fluid had been removed
the water collected atop the adjacent multi-level parking ramp and ran down each level into the Firestone building
but it hadn't been cleaned out since the building was completed in 1984
“The space was uninhabitable until we reinstalled the drains
installed drainage mats and installed a drain tile and sump system,” Hawley says
visitors find relics of the building’s former life in the occasional exposed concrete-block wall
a concrete bunker once used to house tires and the coffee tables fashioned from tires left behind
But the overall look is easy elegance — like it was meant to be an architect’s office all along
The reception area makes the most dramatic first impression
One doesn't often walk from a ground floor entryway down into a lobby at basement level
yet Craftwell’s design choices give that downward perspective an upscale finish
The space is a soaring two-story atrium with wood-paneled
Visitors descend a flight of steps into a reception area featuring a sleek
modern reception desk bearing Craftwell’s logo
Fine-boned mid-modern chairs and a lean Eames sofa with olive-green cushions are posed in a dignified arrangement
The lobby leads into an open-plan office space
where 30 south-facing windows fill the room with natural light
“It gets way more daylight than most office buildings do,” Dawson says
Craftwell’s team only needs half of this space
a pickleball court (used mainly weekends) and pingpong table (used daily) occupy the unused space
A bank of “breakout” rooms offer privacy for telephone calls and Zoom meetings
The east end of the building has been turned into an events center
capacity for up to 128 guests and catering/management by 701 Eateries
The southeast corner of the building has been turned into an enclosed outdoor patio with a screened fence of perforated panels
The garage where former Firestone customers parked is now used by Craftwell’s fleet construction trucks
although a garage door keeps the space private
closing off the garage space and the recessed corner of the old Firestone building did much to deter “a lot of not-great things happening in this ramp,” Hawley says
referring to the semi-enclosed space which seemed to attract illegal activities after Firestone vacated the building in 2015
“We maybe underestimated that in the beginning a little bit," Hawley says
"Now we’ve done a lot of things to improve this
There’s a lot of things that need to happen that are out of our control with the city of Fargo
And he and Dawson say they have no regrets about relocating their office from a south University strip mall to the heart of downtown
That feeling was confirmed after the team moved into the new space last May
It made Dawson's and Hawley's day when they saw teammembers get up and walk together to a nearby coffee shop
multiple dining and shopping options and vibrant feel simply can’t be replicated in a strip mall or business park
The partners believe it's a worthy long-term investment — both for Craftwell and for Fargo
“That’s the stuff that people don’t understand is the amount we spent to make downtown Fargo better
We didn’t ask for tax breaks on this thing,” Hawley says
“I think what's cool about this is that it’s not really about image,” Hawley says
“It’s really about a creative project that ended up being a great place for people to do their work.”

There are rules to observe if you want to get out of the hospital
The following text appears as the introduction to Shulamith Firestone’s Airless Spaces, reissued by Semiotext(e) and out next week. To read more on Shulamith Firestone, see n+1’s 2013 series of reflections on her life and work
what have I done?” Shulamith Firestone told the young documentary filmmakers who followed her around during her last year as a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago
It was 1967 and they’d chosen her as an exemplar of “the Now Generation.” “I want to catch time short and not just drift along with it,” she says to her off-camera interviewers
because it’s not enough for me to just live and die.” Intense
she was already aware of the marginalization and pressure exerted by men on “any intellectual woman or woman involved in the arts.” The film was called Shulie and it was finished but never released
because in the end Firestone disliked it and refused to grant permission for it to be screened
the filmmaker Elisabeth Subrin would make an extraordinary frame-by-frame recreation of this archival film with the actress Kim Soss playing Shulie
which seemed like a brave and principled gesture
like something the younger Shulamith Firestone herself might have done
Firestone’s book Airless Spaces—which she described as a “series of vignettes” depicting life on the inside of public psychiatric hospitals—was published by Semiotext(e)
Shulamith attended the launch of her book that we arranged at a small East Village gallery on Avenue A
so the reading was done by some of her friends: among them
the visionary feminist theorist Kate Millett who
had shuttled in and out of psychiatric institutions
Firestone leaned against the brick wall while her friends read
A few months after she finished art school
Firestone moved to New York and into a small East Village apartment on E
10th Street where she’d live for the rest of her life
The place was between First Avenue and Avenue A—“the other side of the tracks,” as she describes it in one of these stories
casually but very precisely parsing the difference between the quality of life in the neighborhoods east and west of Second Avenue
The very short stories in Airless Spaces masterfully depict all kinds of minor atrocities that eventually lead to each person’s downfall: a forced shower
As in Pialat’s Naked Childhood or Bresson’s Balthazar
all of the characters in Airless Spaces are set on a slow but inevitable downward trajectory
Firestone’s goal as a writer is to show us exactly how they got there
The book contains a section called “Losers” but no antonymic section called “Winners,” because who ever wins
It’s no coincidence that Firestone read a great deal of Dostoevsky
The stories in Airless Spaces all demonstrate the confluence between the relatively smooth movement of institutional control and the erratic and sludgy course of the lives of its subjects
The institution’s systemic actions are almost always the catalyst for the small tragedies that occur in each of these stories
the system’s casual brutality has a powerful afterlife
we see the resulting psychic disintegration attain a life of its own
finally enmeshing the subject in paralyzed entropy
As a very young woman Shulamith Firestone attended civil rights and antiwar demonstrations
She briefly considered aligning herself with the Catholic Marxist organization the Catholic Worker
Firestone was already disillusioned with the New Left and its marginalization of women’s concerns
she cofounded a group called New York Radical Women
where female activists from different leftist organizations met to discuss their concerns
As Susan Faludi writes in her beautiful essay on Firestone’s life
“Death of a Revolutionary,” Radical Women was the first New York group of its kind: a place where women got together to talk about their lives
a place where political principles crystallized through the sharing of each person’s experience
She was radicalized further when she and her feminist colleagues at a New Left demonstration were heckled and booed off the stage
In 1969 Firestone organized the first abortion speak-out at Judson Church in New York
She was directly or indirectly involved in dozens of radical feminist actions and groups
At the same time—at age 24 and in just a few months—she wrote The Dialectic of Sex
which became a feminist and radical-activist classic
Subtitled The Case for Feminist Revolution
The Dialectic of Sex called upon readers to conduct an analysis of the “sex war” as comprehensive as Marx and Engels’s analysis of the class struggle that occurs within dialectical materialism
such an analysis would be “more comprehensive,” she wrote
with an oppression that goes back beyond recorded history to the animal kingdom
but the organization of culture itself.” Dialectic also famously proposed Firestone’s “‘dream’ action”—a smile boycott where “all women would instantly abandon their ‘pleasing’ smiles
henceforth smiling only when something pleased them
The revolution will begin when women stop smiling.”
The Dialectic of Sex was released as a mass-market paperback and published in multiple languages
Thousands of women read The Dialectic of Sex when it came out and felt like their lives had been changed by it
I read it when I was 15 and could not stop observing the traitorous smiles of my classmates and teachers and friends
Firestone wrote presciently about technology
Like Kate Millet’s Sexual Politics and Germaine Greer’s The Female Eunuch
The Dialectic of Sex became a very popular book and Shulamith was invited to present the feminist case on network TV
Despite her extreme disdain for celebrity media culture
she became a respected and recognized public figure
And this turned out to be a grave problem within the New York feminist-cadre circles that she led and belonged to
By the time Dialectic was published in 1970
American radical feminism was already moving toward a New Agey essentialism of moon-goddess rites and “total democracy” that seemed to borrow a page from Maoist China’s cultural revolution
Leadership and all forms of distinction came to be deeply resented
Those who asserted themselves as speakers were publicly criticized and then finally denounced
Firestone—who refused to “democratically” share in office housekeeping tasks of her cadre—was accused of “hoarding attention” and being “too intellectual.” She was formally censured and then expelled from more than one of the groups that she had founded
Firestone touches on this devastation very lightly in the story “Myrna Glickman” in the “Obits” section of Airless Spaces
Her avatar Rozzie comes back into touch with her former best friend Myrna Glickman through a mutual friend after more than two decades
had once collaborated with Rozzie’s powerful enemy Leslie Modrell to oust her from their “supposedly leaderless” feminist group so that Leslie could assume control and eventually run it into the ground
But these struggles are now far in the past
The crux of the story concerns Myrna’s less-than-spectacular life after her life as an activist—she and Leslie now meet once a week to play poker together—and how her strange turns of behavior are abruptly explained by a diagnosis of terminal brain cancer
Firestone didn’t publish any more books until Airless Spaces came out in 1998
She was not diagnosed schizophrenic or hospitalized until 1987
but there must have been problems before that
By the time the neighbors complained that she screamed through the night and her sister Laya flew into New York to take care of her
During the next five years she cycled in and out of public psychiatric facilities regularly—never voluntarily
She came to know the language and logic of institutional life intimately: the “activities” and “treats,” the “group walk” and “community,” all connoted with quotes in these stories
a few younger artists and writers who all recognized Shulamith Firestone’s tremendous influence and importance—gathered around her as a kind of support group
and it was during these years that she wrote these stories
who was one of Shulamith’s younger friends
Would Semiotext(e) like to publish Shulamith Firestone’s new
I think we said yes right away before even reading it
I was just blown away by the way that Airless Spaces wasn’t a memoir
It wasn’t a story of her mental illness and it wasn’t driven by any attempt to reconcile or explain her descent into psychosis
it was as if she’d embedded herself to bear witness to the secret
as Shulamith notes wryly in her story “Stabilized
Yes,” to be stable isn’t the same thing as to be happy
Sometime after the publication of Airless Spaces she relapsed
and in August 2012 she died in her apartment
one of six siblings in an Orthodox Jewish family
From her earliest youth she rebelled against them and their religion bitterly
I’m struck by how Jewish they are on both a secular and spiritual level
Ranging in length between a single paragraph and several pages
Firestone’s stories are a lot like Talmudic mashals—exemplary stories or parables that allegorically demonstrate deeper truths or ideas
it’s the way that Firestone chooses to focus on people’s very modest ambitions and goals—release from the hospital before Christmas
controlling the thermostat—that breaks your heart over and over
Firestone’s people become the most powerful instruments of their own unhappiness
Eighty-two-year-old Pauline tortures herself over the selection of classical music in “Radio Station WISS.” And in “The Caregivers,” Berenice
becomes her neighbor Cleo’s part-time caregiver
simultaneously pitying her new client and deeply resenting her
signing up for “activities,” repressing your “negativity,” kissing ass
the hospital is a microcosm of the larger world
Everything moves through channels of power
Perhaps this is always our first reaction when confronted with allegory: a suspicion of gimmickry
One chant-related goal is to rhyme something with “Passion doesn’t pay the rent,” so we can get a call-and-response going
I started my dancing career at the Adam & Eve on the Upper East Side
but soon settled into working three nights a week at the…

the fire alarm in Firestone Library went off
Students were evacuated as three fire trucks arrived on the scene
The cause of the alarm was a small mulch fire outside of the building
according to Princeton Fire Department Chief Adam Kooker
The smoke from the fire was sucked into the building
“We got dispatched to a smoke condition at the Firestone library,” Kooker said in an interview with The Daily Princetonian
and they found a small pile of mulch outside that had brought smoke into the building.”
Kooker confirmed that there was no damage in the building nor any injuries
He said the cause of the mulch fire is still under investigation.
crowds of students displaced from studying gathered outside
Eyewitnesses told the ‘Prince’ they saw fire crews entering the Cotsen Children’s Library with hoses and axes
“The fire alarm went off and everyone inside slowly came out because everyone thought it was a drill,” Joe McLean ’27 told the ‘Prince.’ “Once we got out
everyone was right next to the entrance door … and then PSAFE and the fire department kept pushing us back
“This is a pretty large building with a lot of occupancy
so there actually was more stuff coming,” Kooker said
“It’s a pretty significant number of trucks and people that we need to handle something like this to do it safely.”
The incident occured on the second day of Princeton Preview
Previewing students took interest but told the ‘Prince’ that it ultimately wouldn’t affect their decision
Students were let back into the building around 3:52 p.m
The University and PSAFE did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication

Petersburg presented by RP Funding marks the third full season that Firestone is providing alternate race tires with sidewalls made with natural rubber sourced from guayule desert shrubs
These tires are marked with a green sidewall and are used at all temporary street course races
This year’s green sidewall alternate tire is operating differently than year’s past
which could dramatically alter strategy for Sunday’s 100-lap race
In preparation for this season’s temporary street circuits
Firestone intentionally provided a softer and faster-wearing alternate compound
This new compound will provide more grip but will wear more quickly
providing a bigger drop-off gap between the primary and alternate tire
“It's going to create an interesting race,” Marcus Ericsson of Andretti Global said
Last year’s winning strategy saw Pato O’Ward start on the alternate tire and pit on Lap 28 for another stint on the green sidewall rubber
He pitted for the final time on Lap 66 to run the final 24 circuits on the Firestone primary tires that are more durable
Ericsson started on the alternates and pit on Laps 30 and 70
both times to put on new Firestone Firehawk primary tires
Scott McLaughlin produced a similar strategy in his 2022 race win
starting on alternate tires but putting on primary tires during his Lap 27 and Lap 64 pit stops
All 27 teams on Sunday must use one set of primary and one set of new (sticker) alternate tires for at least two laps in the race
That has many in the paddock believing the race could become a three pit stop event
with choosing when to use the alternates versus the primaries the most challenging decision
“I think for what Firestone done has done
kudos to them,” Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon said
but I think in the way of racing and making it spectacular and really fun to watch and also difficult for the teams in the cars
“I don't know if there's anybody on pit road
but I think it's going to be extremely tough to get over 30 laps
I think it's going to be tough to get more than 15 or 20
The Chip Ganassi Racing cars are always very good on degradation
to give us a bit more of a window to work with.”
Dale Coyne Racing driver Rinus VeeKay and Team Penske driver Will Power both question if a four-stop strategy could be in play for the drivers starting midpack and further back
The conflicting mix of strategies between years is creating havoc
“Everybody knew what to do with strategy last year,” VeeKay said
and you're looking at all the data you have and you make a decision
I think strategy becomes way more important now with this being the case
I think it's what racing should be like.”
Drivers Want To Entertain First FOX Audience
The anticipation is high that the 2025 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season opener on the streets of St
FOX Sports has used aggressive preseason promotion to kick off its first season of coverage. This includes edgy, creative commercials promoting series stars Josef Newgarden, Alex Palou and O’Ward during numerous FOX broadcasts, including its telecast of Super Bowl LIX, which attracted a record 127 million viewers.
Most of the 27 drivers competing in Sunday’s season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding (noon ET, FOX, FOX Deportes, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network), feel a responsibility to put on a thrilling 100-lap race for the expected infusion of new watchers.
“You have a lot of egos, like in a cage for like, six months,” Team Penske’s McLaughlin said before winning the NTT P1 Award for Sunday’s race. “It’s a term of exuberance, you could say, but it’s just part of it. There's a lot of nervous, nervous energy, as well.”
Ericsson won this race in 2023 and noticed the extra attention FOX Sports has delivered to the series.
“I think FOX is a tremendous partner for us, and it's exactly what we need now,” he said. “We need to put on a show to make sure everyone that tunes into the race tomorrow is going to see a show, as well, because that's going to keep people watching.
“Super thankful, and I'm just excited to be part of that. The INDYCAR SERIES has the best racing in the world. What we need is more eyeballs on that because everyone I know, they love it. It’s just to get people to give it a shot, and I'm hoping FOX gives that opportunity.”
Power turned 44 Saturday but didn’t have a great birthday behind the wheel of the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet.
A mechanical issue in practice left two-time St. Petersburg winner Power 24th on the speed chart. In qualifying, he narrowly missed on advancing to the second round and will roll off 13th in Sunday’s race.
The fact he was in a race car on his birthday was a rare event.
None of his 302 INDYCAR SERIES race weekends occurred during his birthday, with the closest instances occurring in 2022 with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg taking place on Feb. 27 and 2023 with race weekend March 3-5.
Dixon Searches for Elusive St. Petersburg Victory
Dixon has reached victory lane 58 times at 28 different tracks but is 0-for-20 on the streets of St. Petersburg. However, the six-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion has four podium finishes in his last eight starts on this track, and his seventh-place finish last season continued his streak of finishing eighth or better every year since 2016.
“It would be big,” Dixon said of a St. Petersburg victory. “It's a place I've always wanted to win. I think we've come close several times. I think we've had seven or eight podiums.
“Got to keep knocking on the door, and hopefully it's going to open at some point. I know some years we came very close, and maybe if we hadn't made a couple mistakes or even two years ago with how the caution fell and we got caught out by the blend line that kind of really hurt.”
Dixon qualified his No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda sixth, the only CGR driver in the Firestone Fast Six.
Chip Ganassi Racing celebrates its 35th anniversary in racing in 2025. Throughout the year, CGR will celebrate this monumental achievement by looking back at many aspects of the team’s 23 motorsports championships, the more than 260 race victories and the great moments and the people that made it happen.
“When I look back on the 35 years, I know it’s because of the people that we have been able to consistently enjoy success, so any credit really goes to all of them,” Chip Ganassi said. “However, I must say that I look at us like a 35-year-old start-up company. Every year we need to redefine both our mission and vision. We reinvent ourselves, then regroup, and refocus. I think this is what has always kept us motivated.”
Among CGR’s 23 championships includes wins in some of the biggest races in the world, such as five Indianapolis 500 wins, eight victories in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, two in the 12 Hours of Sebring and wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400.

it may be because it suggests something disturbing about feminism itself
Firestone had been, for a period, at the center of New York’s feminist intellectual life. By the time she walked down that street in the East Village, though, the potential her professor had once seen in her was long gone. She had for the most part stopped writing and producing visual art; she lived in isolation, delusion, and unrelenting poverty.

Her mental health would steadily decline
with only rare and partial episodes of remission
As Firestone’s illness progressed through the late nineteen-eighties and nineties
Her sister Laya recalled an episode in which she was summoned to New York by Shulie’s landlord: Firestone had been screaming in the night
she found her sister gaunt and panhandling
Firestone never regained permanent stability
Her body was found in her East Tenth Street apartment
in 2012; her landlord guessed that she had been dead for about a week
some speculated that Firestone had starved to death
Firestone’s transformation from an activist who had bravely and lucidly critiqued her world into a suffering madwoman who could not understand it or function in it has haunted the second wave
herself a veteran of psychiatric institutionalization
proposed that Firestone’s decline mirrored the movement’s
reading a passage from “Airless Spaces” in which Firestone writes that “her life was ruined
and she had no salvage plan.” “I think we should remember Shulie,” Millett said then
Feminists have long understood themselves as truthtellers
and as champions of a vision of women’s equality and dignity that rests more in the reality of their capacities than on the myth of their proper role
But Firestone’s fate seemed to raise the grim possibility that this vision could drive women insane
“Many women give up in despair,” Firestone once wrote of the feminist movement
“If that’s how deep it goes they don’t want to know.” If sexism is predicated on a lie
Firestone had been one of the most outspoken and audacious leaders of the radical-feminist movement
the small but influential group of women who spun off from the male-dominated New Left in the late nineteen-sixties to propose a fundamental transformation of political and private life on the basis of gender equality
she wrote some of the movement’s foundational tracts—including contributions to Notes
the annual periodical of the New York Radical Women that she founded
like the widely read 1968 essay “The Women’s Rights Movement in the U.S.: A New View.” She also founded radical-feminist organizing groups
The feminist Susan Faludi noted in an obituary that Firestone’s peers called her “the firebrand,” and sometimes “the fireball.” Even by the standards of the late-sixties radical milieu
is among the most sweeping and ambitious intellectual efforts of feminism’s second wave
A manifesto with a broad historical remit and a utopian futurist vision
“Dialectic” attempted to do for sex what Marx had done for class: explain how the sex distinction had created a hierarchy within which all other social relations were built
It challenged not only marriage and the nuclear family but also how society treats children
along with pregnancy itself: Firestone famously compared childbirth to “shitting a pumpkin,” and called for a technological revolution after which “children would be born to both sexes equally
or independently of either.” When I first read it
I was about the age Firestone was when it was published
and the book’s passion and audacity impressed me
I am struck most by its peculiar guilelessness
Firestone proceeded with what now scans to me today as uncanny fearlessness
venturing to the far edges of feminist thought
Firestone’s radical-feminist circles were devolving into ineffectual infighting
Ideological disagreements took on a personal sheen
and activist groups—never large in size—were splintering into smaller and smaller sects
It was a tendency that Firestone’s friend and fellow-radical Jo Freeman would famously term “trashing.” The factionalism and backstabbing left a bad taste in Firestone’s mouth
“I don’t believe finally that the revolution is so imminent that it’s worth tampering with my whole psychological structure
which is what they’re all into,” she wrote in an irate letter to her sister Laya in 1970
she largely withdrew from radical politics
referred to this period as the time when the writer “plunged outside history.”
but it gives readers a sense of what happened in the interim: hospitals
welfare programs for the unemployable and very poor
some of them no longer than a few paragraphs
frightened narrators at the margins of life
and though almost none are named as the author
she is often recognizable in her characters
Some of the vignettes are in the first person
with Firestone avowing the “I”; others are in the third person
with the distance of disidentification often allowing an even starker depiction of insanity’s loneliness and defeatism
Many of these protagonists endure the tedium and humiliation of involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations
losing days and years to paralyzing inertia
and experiencing terrifying delusions of persecution and betrayal
If “The Dialectic of Sex” is almost breathlessly expansive
overflowing with enthusiasm for a newfound cause
“Airless Spaces” is shockingly cramped—grinding
The effect seems to have been felt by Firestone herself
too: among the losses she grieves in “Airless Spaces” is that of her intellect
“She had been reading Dante’s Inferno when first she went into the hospital,” she remembers
but when she came out she couldn’t even get down a fashion rag; the words bounced off her forehead like it was steel.” Writing
“The old excitement of creation did not return
it fizzled by morning after her nightly medication,” Firestone writes
but in Firestone’s telling they are difficult to like
The characters of “Airless Spaces” are often embittered and sarcastic
They are suspicious of doctors and angry at their few remaining friends
Many suspect that the professed concern and kindness of the sane world is little more than patronizing falseness and disgust: they frequently do not have a firm grasp on reality
painfully aware of how they seem to others
They anxiously read the faces of those around them for confirmation that others see them as fearsome
the patients are watched by doctors and other staff
A room that inmates sneak off to nap in—a rare moment of peace—is converted into an office
They are constantly being instructed to participate in the ward’s “activities”—craft and stretching regimens that insult Firestone’s characters with their false cheer
A patient named Margaret had cherished the attention of her psychiatrist
but flinches when she sees herself described by her doctor on a vocational training evaluation form as “well-nourished.” “Couldn’t she just call her fat or jowly and be done with it?” she thinks
and worries that she is a poor candidate for the training
turns in a moment from a longed-for salvation into a dangerous exposure
a woman is forced to take a shower after refusing to bathe in the psych ward
convinced that the water is laced with dangerous chemicals
“She had waited many months because the water in her apartment had 116 different poisons in it
which is how you knew they were hard poisons and not just the ‘medication’ that was pretended,” Firestone writes
The woman is violently subdued by orderlies
stripped naked and heaved under the showerhead
It’s not until after the shower is completed that they jab her in the ass with a sedative: it is delivered not as medication
Her sister Tirzah speculates that the turn occurred around 1981
when their father died; Firestone’s own writing makes it seem as if her hallucinations may have begun earlier
following the suicide of her brother Danny
Time is uncertain in “Airless Spaces,” too
with the action divested of any mention of news or technology
The hospital itself seems to exist out of time
Every day in the ward is like the next: routinized
Many of the characters seem to have been medicated into a stupefied affectlessness
It is usually impossible to tell whether they have been there for days
Firestone’s narrators are always scheming to leave
either arguing uselessly with administrators about the injustice of their incarceration or playing along
hoping that good behavior will get them out
We never see the moment of release—the signing of the forms
the step over the threshold into the cold daylight
they often live the same way they did inside
as if someone were holding her under water for months,” Firestone writes of one character
and thoroughly programmed by the rigid hospital routine
at precisely 5:00 p.m.” There is formal repetition here
Though “Airless Spaces” contains more than fifty stories
they are in many ways all the same: Firestone’s avatars all trudge grimly through their hospital stays
This sameness may be in part a function of Firestone’s subject matter
Institutions anonymize and repeat; mental illnesses
frequently grind their subjects down into a state of paralysis
Though Firestone’s characters have urgent desires
they have no means of expressing or pursuing them
Efforts to exert the barest control over their lives—sneaking off to nap
And where there is no agency there can be no plot
It’s tempting to read “Airless Spaces” as an allegory for the trajectory of the second wave
with Firestone’s diminution mirroring that of the movement she was instrumental in creating
is striking for how little it has to say about feminist politics
One of Firestone’s stories alludes to a falling out between two members of a radical-feminist group
Another story’s narrator visits the would-be Warhol assassin Valerie Solanas after hearing that she has been released from an institution for the criminally insane
But the narrator shrinks from Solanas’s attempts to discuss feminist theory
The recognition of their similarity seems to breed revulsion
There are other cameos from mid-century celebrities: Diane Arbus is seemingly depicted in the form of Yvonne Tree
a photographer whom the narrator does not quite trust; Allen Ginsberg
in the guise of the Beat poet Jeremy Salzburg
becomes the object of an ill-advised crush
But for the most part these moments are fleeting
embarrassing; the characters try to connect with these figures of Firestone’s former world
This is not the social world of a feminist intellectual but the lingering dregs of a lost life she cannot reclaim
her biggest trouble was she couldn’t care about anything
“She sometimes recognized on the faces of others joy and ambition and other emotions she could recall having had once
The vast disparity between Firestone’s former life and the one she lived as a psychiatric patient underscores the indifferent rapaciousness of mental illness
Schizophrenia invaded and transformed Firestone’s mind
without regard for what had been there before
madness is a bit like the radical-feminist conception of gender itself: a malignant force whose power is intimate yet strangely impersonal
to live successfully as a woman under patriarchy—to submit to the unfairness of gender relations
to smilingly endure your subordinate status and the limits it places on your freedom and dignity—was itself a kind of well-adjusted madness
a trade-off wherein women gained social approval in exchange for accepting the myth of their own inferiority
Waking up to sanity meant abandoning this fantasy for the real world
But it came at a cost: to be a woman who believed in her own equality with men meant to be eternally at odds with a world that denied it
One way to think of Firestone’s decline is to see her as an anti-feminist cautionary tale
an object lesson in how feminist politics can estrange a woman from society and render her incapable of functioning within it
But another way to read the story of Firestone’s life is equally disquieting: it raises the question of whether there is any difference between madness and being the only sane person in a sick world
In “Frontispiece,” the first story of “Airless Spaces,” the narrator recounts a dream in which she is aboard a sinking ocean liner
“The water was slowly seeping up from below
and the people aboard the ship knew that they were doomed,” Firestone writes
the passengers are gathering on the highest decks
“Wasn’t I looking in the wrong direction?” she asks
“But I desperately searched the equipment in the basement for something that would supply an air pocket
and I succeeded in finding a refrigerator into which I stowed myself.” Her hope was that she might find a place of safety

sunshine aplenty and the roar of race cars on the streets of St
Petersburg – quite the start to the 2025 NTT INDYCAR SERIES on Sunday
And then there was Alex Palou dousing the field with a bucket of water
The winner of the past two series championships and three of the past four masterfully drove to a season-opening victory in the Firestone Grand Prix of St
16 races remain to settle this year’s title
but history has shown it’s not beneficial to spot Palou much of anything
When the Spaniard won his first series championship in 2021
he won the season-opening race at Barber Motorsports Park
While he didn’t win another race until June
his consistency helped him stay in the top three of the standings
Palou opened with an eighth-place finish in St
Petersburg and was in the top five in each of the next three races
netting five wins in the final 13 races to win the title with a race to spare
Petersburg race handed Palou a fourth-place finish
he was off and running in a back-to-back championship season
It’s important perspective that Palou has won races at seven of the remaining 15 venues on this year’s schedule
including two wins each on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and Portland International Raceway
Petersburg had been one of the circuits that hadn’t been kind to him
Palou and his crew have put the other championship hopefuls on alert
who sits on Scott Dixon’s pit stand during races
there’s nobody better than (Palou’s group),” Ganassi said
“Us on (Dixon’s) car and the 8 car (of Kyffin Simpson)
we’ve got work to do to catch up to those guys.”
Even Palou understands this might be a difference-making moment in the season
and he compared it to how 2021 started in his debut with Chip Ganassi Racing
“(That) was my first time with the team or leading the championship
what are we doing here?’” he said
“Now I think we’re a bit more used to it
“It’s about knowing the positives of starting off the year strong and now heading to some tracks that we know we’ve been really quick at in the past.”

Firestone CLC dance students got a personal lesson on how to express themselves through both creative writing and movement with hip-hop artist Raphael Xavier on April 8
The 53-year-old artist gave a workshop that built on the students' previous creative writing work
helping them delve into the process of bringing it to life on the spot through both spoken word and movement
about 20 students had done a creative writing workshop with Cynthia Larsen of Lake Erie Ink at Firestone
creating poetry or prose focused on a moment of adversity in their lives
led 18 students through a workshop that set those words to movement
You're just bringing that life to another level," he told the student dancers
who were expressing their personal experiences
Xavier reminded the students that each person's writing is unique
He encouraged them to find their power in both their words and movement
and then go wherever you want from your imagination," he said
He and DanceCleveland teaching artist Rondale Simpson of Read to Learn … Dance to Move led the students through introductions and a dance warmup
he gave the dancers two minutes to choose one line from their writing and memorize it
They then created movement set to their line and performed it in front of the class
"You're going to attach your line to a movement," Xavier said
that's how long your movement is going to be."
the students each performed their movement without words
Junior Amaris Kerney was first to perform movement with a line from her poem

will perform his work "Skiff" April 12 and 13 at Tri-C Metro Campus in Cleveland
The performances are presented by DanceCleveland and Tri-C
"Skiff," created through the lens of Ernest Hemingway's classic novel "The Old Man and the Sea," features original spoken word interwoven with Hemingway's text
Xavier draws parallels between the fisherman's relentless battle with a giant marlin in Hemingway's story to his own journey building a dance career through the art form of breaking
"Skiff" also is inspired by Winslow Homer's painting "The Gulf Stream," which pictures a Black man in a small fishing boat on a restless sea as sharks circle
the Firestone students were all offered free tickets to see him perform with his company members and local performers Zhane Jackson
when he performed his "Kolade-Xcope" at Cain Park
enjoying not only his choreographic genius but also the mentorship that he provides to artists and students in our community and the collaborative approach he takes to his work," said Sarah Sumbrum
the workshop with Xavier the next and a third
wrap-up session coming the week of April 14 with a DanceCleveland teaching artist
That's when the students will talk about the workshop
their writing assignment and Xavier's performance
His visit at Firestone was supported by the Akron Community Foundation
Peg's Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council
which have brought world-class dance artists to Summit County this school year for dance education and engagement
That has also included classes by Lloyd Knight at the University of Akron
classes by Knight and Helene Simoneau Danse at Firestone
and a lecture-demonstration by Simoneau at Kenmore Community Center
Freestyling at FirestoneAs part of the Firestone workshop
Xavier talked to the students about dance freestyling
created spontaneously without preplanned choreography
He then demonstrated by performing spoken word as Simpson created movement to it
I have no idea what he's gonna do," Xavier said
the students did a freestyling exercise in pairs
with one student reciting her creative writing line and the other freestyling through dance
The student who was reciting spoke directly to the audience
without looking at the dancer interpreting her words
"I found my inner strength was to have confidence on stage in front of the audience," said Juelaree Carmona

Akron Public Schools has requested that both officers involved in the forceful arrest of a Firestone CLC student
Superintendent Michael Robinson said Monday night
Security footage released by the district before the meeting shows the school's resource officer repeatedly punching a student in the head while he and another officer attempted to arrest the teen last week
Mayor Shammas Malik had previously announced the school's resource officer has been moved to administrative duty and would not be assigned to a school in the future
no matter the outcome of a pending use-of-force investigation
But Robinson said the district asked for both officers to be removed from any APS duties
a 16-year-old student on his way into school was arrested for allegedly evading the school's metal detectors and trying to push past school and security personnel
Video released by the district Monday showed the school's resource officer punched the student in the head at least three times before he was taken down to the ground
who was an Akron officer working a secondary employment security job at the school
did not appear to strike the student but was involved in the arrest
He is continuing to work his regular job in the Akron Police Department
the school district can request the removal of any officer from its school resource officer program
which embeds officers into schools to provide security but also build relationships with students
The second officer was not a part of that program
but would no longer be able to request such an assignment in the future
and would not work any secondary employment jobs in the schools or at school events
The student was found to have a cellphone against APS policy but did not have a weapon
He was initially charged with several misdemeanors
including criminal trespassing and resisting arrest
but the city announced those had been dropped pending the use-of-force investigation
Robinson said he has spoken with the student's mother and plans to speak with the student soon
Robinson spoke about the incident at a school board meeting Monday night
reading aloud portions of a statement that had been sent out earlier in the day and answering questions from the board
Board member Summer Hall asked about what additional measures could be taken to help students who may have witnessed the event or heard about it
"I'm wondering if we can be proactive and not wait for students to come with an issue," Hall said
Robinson said the district dispatched its crisis team
and the school's principal has already initiated conversations with students
"This is something that I think that we need to probably be discussing in a more deeper way in all of our schools
to be very honest with you," Robinson said
Board member Barbara Sykes issued an apology to the student and his family
"I hope that we will work to do everything that we can to help that particular family and that particular student."
She also apologized to the Firestone staff and students
my sincere apologies to all of the students at the Firestone CLC that had to see this
She said she had not yet watched the video of the arrest
"I'm not looking forward to seeing the tape
I want to think about it as it relates to my child and what I would expect and want for my child," Sykes said
She called for a review of policies and procedures
"What it is that we can do within our system to make sure that this doesn't happen again?" she asked
a Beacon Journal reporter asked if there were procedures in place that were communicated to officers in schools about how to handle situations in which a student sets off a metal detector or resists going through them
Deputy Chief David Laughlin said he couldn't speak to the exact procedure as it was an Akron schools procedure
Police officers are not the primary staff used to assist students through the metal detectors
The mayor noted the practice of running all students through metal detectors at the beginning of every school day is relatively new for Akron schools
although metal detectors have been used in the past
"This is an area that that we are going to work on going forward
because all of these issues — cellphones and Yondr bags
the staffing and security needs — they're all
they've all been evolving and changing pretty significantly over the last few years," Malik said
He also noted the contract with the school district for school resource officers expires at the end of the year
"We we are going to be continuing to work with APS going forward on trying to partner and continue to improve those processes," he said
Asked whether he believed the Firestone incident would prompt a larger conversation about the use of police in schools

In another indication of the ongoing downturn in the agricultural economy
is offering buyouts at the company’s Bridgestone-Firestone agricultural tire plant in Des Moines
Bridgestone notified United Steel Workers Local 310L on Monday that it would make the voluntary separation offers for up to 130 employees “due to ongoing demand constraints in the agriculture tire sector.”
Employees who take the buyout will get $35,000
Bell said he believed 112 workers had indicated an interest in taking the buyout
If a full 130 workers don't accept the offer by the end of January
layoffs or furloughs could make up the difference
“We obviously don’t like seeing layoffs but I don’t think Bridgestone does
due to the difficulty we’ve had in the past filling positions,” he said
the plant made about 900 new hires but retained only 200 of those workers
“Manufacturing and factory work is not for everyone,” he said
“Bridgestone regularly evaluates all aspects of its business to ensure we remain competitive and that resources are allocated in a manner that best supports our business strategy
Bridgestone will continue to monitor current market conditions and future forecasts across all of our businesses to review production schedules and adjust as conditions warrant.”
Bridgestone-Firestone plant made layoffs in 2024The plant at 4600 N.W
it employed nearly 1,800 workers but it had a larger product line then
The buyout offer follows the announcement in June that the plant was laying off 118 workers
a move that affected all employees with two years or less of seniority
the initial layoff announcement — the first of a job cut at the plant since 1990 — was eventually amended to 89 workers
with an additional 52 workers taking a 16-week furlough
A report from the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers in June 2024 reported that 22% of Iowa’s economy — or $53.1 billion — is tied to agriculture
from crop and livestock production to food processing and manufacturing
Farmers are experiencing the biggest decline in farm income in two decades as crop prices fall
The Des Moines plant manufactures tires for large agricultural and forestry equipment
so its orders are entirely dependent on those two sectors of the economy
“It’s been fairly slow since just before last summer,” he said
where an additional 75 layoffs were announced earlier this week
Several Deere suppliers in Iowa also have laid off workers
And Tyson Fresh Meats in June shut down its Perry pork processing plant

Firestone’s Game-Changing Tire Selection Shakes Up IndyCar Competition
As the threat of heavy rain looms over the upcoming race at Barber Motorsports Park
teams are relying heavily on the insights gained from the single practice session on Friday
This session becomes crucial for understanding the dynamics of Firestone’s primary and alternate tires before the dry 90-lap showdown on Sunday
According to Firestone’s pre-event briefing
the tried-and-true softer alternate tire remains consistent with the 2024 version
while the harder primary compound has been enhanced for increased durability
top drivers from Friday’s practice have reported a significant shift in tire performance compared to previous races
Colton Herta from Andretti Global expressed his comfort with the tire setup
“It seems pretty normal to me… I expect the racing to be similar to last year as far as tire strategy.” However
Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing had a contrasting view
emphasizing the notable difference in grip between the primary and alternate tires
Palou praised the alternates for their speed and longevity
setting the stage for an exciting race day
Despite concerns about the added weight in the hybrid configuration
drivers like Palou were pleasantly surprised by their car’s performance
hinting at potential strategies to leverage the new tire dynamics to gain a competitive edge in the race
With tensions running high and expectations shattered
the stage is set for a thrilling and unpredictable race at Barber Motorsports Park
Stay tuned as IndyCar drivers push the limits with Firestone’s innovative tire selection
promising an exhilarating display of skill and strategy on the track

Its rare that a pilsner obtains the kind of hype and cult status as Firestone Walker Brewing and Russian River Brewing’s collaboration small-batch STiVO
Created under special circumstances in 2018
the STiVO pilsner is making only it’s third appearance in 7 years
STiVO is a masterful mashup of the breweries’ flagship pilsners
STS and Pivo—two beers that helped spark a new generation of American craft pilsners
STiVO is ultimately born of a longtime friendship between brewmasters Matt Brynildson of Firestone Walker and Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River
whose collaborative connection spans nearly 20 years
STiVO won a gold medal at the 2018 World Beer Cup and was later re-released in 2022
It now returns for a limited time at all Firestone Walker locations
“Vinnie and I have such similar tastes in pilsners
and our recipes are so sympatico that it’s always felt like a match made in heaven—two breweries coming together on something they’re both super stoked about,” said Brynildson.
I was inspired by a few European pilsners and one pivotal modern U.S
pilsner in particular—Matt’s Pivo Pils,” Cilurzo said
and when he later asked me if we wanted to make a collaborative mashup of our two pilsners
but it has always stayed hop forward and super drinkable.”
Another LevelBrewed at Firestone Walker’s Propagator R&D brewhouse in Venice
this latest batch of STiVO builds upon the original recipe with some evolutionary tweaks that take it to another level.
Whereas the original STiVO featured all German Weyermann pilsner malts
the new edition is composed of 50 percent Dingemans pilsner malts—a reflection of STS’s own shift toward this Belgian maltster in recent years
The hops are once again split down the middle between Pivo’s German Saphir hops and STS’s French Aramis hops
the Aramis hops in the dry hopping portion come via a cutting-edge hop extract known as Aramis Quantum Brite
which was custom-made for Russian River.
“The extract just makes the hop aromas all the more vivid,” said Propagator Brewery Manager Sam Tierney
and the beer will still be familiar for those who had it in the past
but the collaborative tradition of exchanging ideas continues to push us in new directions.”
Brynildson notes that Cilurzo was so excited about this latest batch that he’s thinking about brewing it sometime at Russian River’s brewery in Windsor
“STiVO is everything that we love about a new-age craft pilsner—clean and aromatic
with a subtle hop imprint,” Brynildson says
