(WFTS) — If you've been to the grocery store lately
you know the price of eggs is still through the roof
A dozen eggs now cost 96% more than this time last year
Some shoppers are seeing prices double in the last six weeks
That's on top of the gamble that your grocer of choice will even have eggs in stock
The egg shortage is due to the spread of bird flu
There are several states with confirmed outbreaks on both the east coast and west coast
some in the Fish Hawk community don't have to worry about the price of eggs
That's because middle school students at Randall Middle School are making sure their community has their fix of protein
and we take care of our chickens," said one of the middle schoolers
and chickens."I like to come in every morning
and make sure they have everything they need for the next day," said another student
The chicken coop is the hot topic right now amid the egg shortage
While the price of eggs at the grocery store keeps going up
"We have always kept it at $4 a dozen for the teachers because
Every dollar Randall Middle teachers and parents spend on these eggs goes right back to the program
funding food and supplies to keep it going
The students are completely responsible for taking care of the livestock
save for one student with two chickens under his care
And the kids love it to the point that their parents can see a difference at home
this is the only reason why my kid wants to go to school
they want to come to school to take care of their animal," said Andrews
And the students are proud to show off their animals
"I'm the first one to go into agriculture in my family
I just want to express my love to them,'" said one of the students
It's also showing off the lifelong lessons and responsibility tending to livestock can teach
"The thing I like most is all the leadership and all the friends you can make here and to be able to learn stuff about
"I like to take care of something other than myself each morning
It makes me feel good," another student added
and package eggs four days out of the school week
They deliver their weekly spoils to teachers and parents who signed up for the eggs on Friday
There's even technology in the lab to find eggs that aren't suitable for eating
and I feel like that's part of where the system failed"
Henry Betsey Jr. is facing charges for marrying three Florida women in three different counties at the same time. Now
saying the system that handles marriage licenses kept them in the dark

2024A mail carrier fatally stabbed a lawn care worker in Fish Hawk on Tuesday after the two men got into an argument about parking
according to new information on the incident released by Hillsborough deputies
Deputies responded to the 5600 block of Tanagerlake Road about 1 p.m
the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release later that day
they found a man with upper body trauma who was pronounced dead at the scene
Deputies have identified the man who was killed as Jacob Whitaker
The man who stabbed him is a United States Postal Service worker
the two men argued “over a vehicle’s parking position on the street‚” a sheriff’s office spokesperson said in an email
Detectives were still investigating Thursday
The sheriff’s office has not released the name of the postal worker
“Our detectives are working tirelessly to uncover the circumstances behind this tragic incident,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in the news release

We are blessed here in Northeast Florida with an abundance of wildlife associated with the St. Johns River, and they are not all fish, shrimp and crabs either
We also have well over 200 species of birds that can be found in the area
and over half are found along the river and its associated wetlands
appearing on the Great Seal and countless other places
had never been recognized officially as our national bird
That changed on Christmas Eve 2024 when President Joe Biden signed the bipartisan legislation into law
Johns River and can be seen flying in search of fish to catch for their next meal
Other predators include the osprey or fish hawk
whose nests are frequently found on navigation markers or power line towers
we have several other species of hawks that can be seen in the area
While the bald eagles and ospreys were once threatened/endangered
they have been delisted from the Endangered Species Act due to their recovery
Both are still protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act
Predatory birds like eagles and hawks were especially sensitive to pesticides like DDT in the 1960s
and thus the overall population declined to dangerously low levels
One local species that does remain listed as federally designed threatened is the wood stork
The wood stork is the only species of true stork that breeds in the U.S
They nest in mixed cypress and hardwood swamps
and can often be seen nesting in large colonies with hundreds of birds
It has been the destruction of these wetland habitats that has caused their population to decline
Two other species of wading birds found locally and that are not considered threatened or endangered are the great blue heron and the American or great egret
has a blue-gray appearance and a heavier bill
A key identifier is that American egrets usually have dark legs
while great blue herons have lighter-colored legs
A couple of other river-linked species that can be confusing are the anhinga and cormorants
Both are dark-colored water birds that dive for fish in Florida
but they have several differences that can help you tell them apart
while cormorants have a hooked bill adapted for grabbing prey
Both have long necks with the anhinga being longer
swim with only their head and neck above the water
Both can be seen with their wings spread to allow them to dry with the anhinga showing white markings on their backs
And that is only a quick sampling of the possible bird species you can see
So go out and enjoy what Northeast Florida has to offer
Can you see whales from the beach in Northeast Florida
While several species of whales can travel offshore Northeast Florida
the Northern right whale is the one most likely to be seen this time of the year
They migrate to the South Georgia/Northeast Florida area in the winter to calve
and the possibility of their extinction is very real
They were named because they were the right whales to hunt
Some good news did recently appear in the scientific literature that indicates that they can live much longer than originally thought
And while studies show that right whales can live to well over 100 years
they are actually dying around 22 years old
And simple math tells you that if deaths are greater than births

Tornado warning issued for Polk as fierce storm speeds north toward Medulla, Lakeland LinderA tornado warning was issued for Polk County at 6:48 p.m
"a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located 10 miles south of Medulla
moving north at 60 mph." Weather radar indicated rotation in the storm
Other areas included in the alert were Crystal Lake
Polk County residents should brace for Hurricane Helene to bring stronger winds
but potentially less rain than anticipated to the region Thursday
While Helene has strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane moving north across the Gulf of Mexico in the past 24 hours
its local impact will be more like a tropical storm
according to meteorologist Matt Anderson of the National Weather Service's Tampa Bay office
A tornado watch has been issued for Polk through 8 p.m
Anderson said tropical storm force winds measured at more than 40 mph extend more than 300 miles from the eye of the storm
A tornado watch means that the weather conditions are favorable for the formation of tornados
as the rain bands passing over Polk could produce rotation
It can be upgraded to a tornado warning quickly if forecasters spot something on radar that indicates a tornado is imminent
There are some early reports of a tornado touching down near Fort Myers early Thursday morning
and a few unconfirmed sightings farther south
There were no reports any closer to Polk as of 9:45 a.m
Polk residents were told to expect to see between 3 to 6 inches of rainfall Thursday as the storm passes through the region
Latest forecasts predict the actual amount may be far less
"We may not quite realize that amount," Anderson said
" There are some gaps in the rain bands we are seeing."
There is a current of dry air that is moving into the storm
Polk will see bands of heavy rain interspaced with lengthy breaks throughout Thursday
a Flood Watch does remain in effect for Polk
Anderson said the region's rivers are anticipated to stay at or below a low flood stage

The posted estimate for restoration of power is by 8:45 p.m
Update 1 p.m.: The Bartow Commission issued an emergency declaration on Wednesday evening that will run until the next commission meeting in October
including Avenue T and the Peace River Mobile Home Park
Those areas and others saw flooding in 2022 when Hurricane Ian hit Bartow with high rainfall amounts
the commission heard from city department heads about potential public services delays
a deluge upstream from Bartow could mean higher Peace River water levels by the weekend and into early next week
the water level of the Peace River is currently lower at 6.7 feet compared with conditions during prior storms
The city has minor flooding when the river reaches 8 feet and major flooding at 9 feet
an emergency declaration was issued after minor flooding had already started and levels were already more than 8 feet high
but city parks remain open for normal hours of operation
The top of the golf course is likely to reopen Friday
but city staff are monitoring the lower half of the course to determine if that portion of the course needs to remain close or can be reopened

For Gulf Coast residents and some inland areas, it's too late to go to Publix for groceries and hurricane supplies. It’s the same for Walmart
According to the Publix Super Markets Inc. website

including Panhandle stores in all of Tallahassee and Panama City
The closures extend inland as far north as Albany
The Publix store closures start just north of Sarasota along the Gulf Coast to the Hernando Beach-Pine Island areas
Grocer Winn-Dixie showed more than a dozen closings on Thursday
A similar pattern on Walmart’s website showed Thursday morning that 35 of its stores and Sam’s Club locations were closed

is facing a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Jacob Whitaker
the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release
An attorney for Calloway said the stabbing was in self-defense
they found Whittaker unresponsive in the road with “several stab wounds to his upper torso,” and he was pronounced dead at the scene
the two men had argued “over a vehicle’s parking position on the street‚” a sheriff’s office spokesperson previously told the Tampa Bay Times
said the postal carrier acted in self-defense and is protected by Florida’s stand your ground law
“At the point in time when (Whitaker) was stabbed
“He was an individual that was very dangerous and could have killed or seriously hurt our client
We’re sorry someone had to lose their life over this
but that’s the purpose of the stand your ground law
so you can protect yourself and it doesn’t result in your death when someone’s attacking you.”
Escobar said Calloway is “frail” and weighs about 160 pounds
who Escobar said was over 6 feet tall and weighed as much as 300 pounds
A Hillsborough traffic ticket Whitaker received in November 2023 listed him as 6-foot
Escobar said he was waiting to get surveillance video from a nearby home to get a fuller picture of what happened
“My client was doing nothing but delivering mail from his truck,” Escobar said
“I think the aggression here was strictly one-sided.”
Florida’s stand your ground law, first passed in 2005, says a person has no duty to retreat and can use deadly force if in fear of death or great bodily harm when faced with a violent confrontation. The state Legislature amended the law in 2017, placing the burden on prosecutors to prove that a criminal case should proceed if a person accused of violence against someone else claims they acted in self-defense.
In social media posts mourning Whitaker’s death, friends and loved ones described him as “kind,” “respectful” and “a giant teddy bear.” Shortly after his death, some began to circulate a hashtag, #justiceforjake.
In a news release Friday, Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister called the stabbing a “senseless” act of violence.

Former FishHawk resident Jake Trammel made his Broadway debut this spring in the musical The Great Gatsby
Jake studied dance at Center For Dance Arts (CFDA) and was part of its award-winning competition team from 2016 until he graduated high school in 2021
“Jake was very dedicated with rehearsals and technique classes and would even rehearse on his own outside of classes,” said his mother
Jake competed as many as 10 times per year at various competitions around Florida and would attend dance conventions
Jake never felt quite good enough to make it far and was ready to hang up his dancing shoes
Jake credits his CFDA teachers and teammates for encouraging him to stick with it
he gave one final effort at his last dance convention
The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) was holding an audition for high school juniors and seniors at that convention
Jake was one of several hundred who auditioned
He was stunned when AMDA awarded him its most prestigious award
its Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program worth $40,000 that includes two years in New York City and finishes with two years in Los Angeles
Jake moved to New York City in the summer of 2021 to start his AMDA education early
After graduating from the New York City portion of his scholarship
he received an offer to work in Boca Raton for the summer at The Wick Theatre
performing as an ensemble member in Anything Goes
The Wick offered him a role in the ensemble and understudy to the lead in its next show
While deciding whether to complete his dance education in Los Angeles or return to New York City to actively pursue a role on Broadway
Jake was offered representation by Clear Talent Group
Auditions then led to Jake receiving three paid offers for off-Broadway plays
choosing the role of an ensemble member in The Great Gatsby at Papermill Playhouse in New Jersey
The producers then took the play to Broadway and Jake was offered a promotion to a swing role
both The Great Gatsby and Jake were first previewed at the Broadway Theatre and have been ‘roaring on’ ever since
Jake performs in eight shows per week in his normal role and is also responsible for seven different roles
He was also in all ensemble songs on The Great Gatsby’s soundtrack album with Sony Masterworks Broadway
Jake’s journey from FishHawk to Broadway has been a source of immense pride for the entire CFDA community and his family
all of whom are excited to see where Jake’s talent and determination will take him next
“My journey has been a long trip to Broadway
patience and staying humble have gotten me here the way I needed to and will guide me to my future goals in life,” said Jake

You often hear about walleyes seemingly vanishing into thin air once the weather gets hot during the dog days of summer
this happens because walleyes migrate literally hundreds of miles as water temperatures begin to rise
the majority of Erie walleyes spend their winters in the western end off the shore of Ohio as they prepare to spawn in the spring
The Eastern Basin of Lake Erie begins around Erie
and stretches all the way to the end of the lake around Buffalo
Unlike salmon and other species that tend to migrate into cooler water
this walleye migration has more to do with food than comfort
Eastern Basin Lake Erie walleyes prefer smelt
An average-size smelt is between 2 and 4 inches long and somewhat smaller in diameter
Seasoned veterans of the Eastern Basin walleye bite know that smaller lures that mimic that forage catch more fish day in and day out
While knowing the general area to target these elusive walleyes is a big first step
getting a lure in front of them is often where first-timers fail
or temperature change within the water column
and a majority of aquatic life within the system will be found at or just above it
This small window has to do with the preferred oxygen levels of most of the life within the system
This temperature change typically takes place anywhere from 40 to 80 feet below the surface
and it’s often distinct enough that it appears as a constant
Lead-core line consists of a hollow Dacron or braided sheath with a lead core that runs the entire length of the line
The line itself changes color every 30 feet so anglers can easily keep track of how much line is in the water
and a less expensive reel with a larger capacity
Like any weighted system, the faster you go, the less the line dives in the water. At a speed of roughly 2 mph, most 18-pound-test lead-core lines will achieve 5 feet of diving depth per color in the water. Newer lines, such as Sufix 832 Leadcore
has a super-braid outer sheath that allows for a strong yet much smaller diameter line that results in less drag and additional diving depth
This allows the Suffix 832 to gain a whopping 7 feet of depth per color of line
spool a backing material (up to 200 feet of braid or mono) onto a reel and then splice in the lead-core with the number of colors you will need
this is done by removing a 6-inch section of the lead core to make the knot smaller
A back-to-back Uni knot or even a super-small swivel are good choices for this connection
The same type of connection can be used on the other end of the lead core to attach a leader
Leader lengths can vary anywhere from 7 to 50 feet depending on water clarity
This system requires multiple reels to cover a variety of depths
but it is popular with locals because of its effectiveness
The ability to have your weight distributed along a 100-plus foot section of line helps reduce boat surge and allows the lure to be more consistent in the water column
Typically, planer boards are used in conjunction with lead core to both get lures away from the boat and to enable the use of multiple lures per side without tangling. If I could use only one bait behind lead core, the easy choice would be a Storm ThunderStick
Another effective salmon-fishing-type diving system is a Luhr-Jensen Dipsy Diver
This weighted disk has a release mechanism that forces the disk to dive when clicked into place but trips when a fish hits
This release allows for easier retrieval and less forced pressure when fighting a fish
On the bottom of the disk are settings numbered 0
2 and 3 that allow the Dipsy Diver to plane away from the boat at various angles to both prevent spooking fish and to run more than one line per side
Zero provides limited dive and goes directly below the boat
whereas each increasing number will allow the Dipsy to plane out farther from the boat
It should be noted that there is a left side and a right side
and if you reverse those you will have a mess on your hands
The nice thing about Dipsy Divers is that they get deeper more quickly than lead-core line and can be used alongside planer boards
The larger size-1 or “mag” size Dipsys pull too hard to be placed on planer boards
but they work great when they’re run right at the boat and out to a 3 setting
which is near where your inside board line will be in the water
This allows you to cover more water and easily fish deep
The gear required for fishing Dipsy Divers is fairly basic
A rod that is a little heavier and with more of a moderate action than a planer board rod will allow you to handle the force of the diver
yet see when you have a fish on and then fight the fish without ripping out hooks
Braided line such as 30-pound Sufix ProMix is advised for this application to get baits deeper
see bites more easily and allow the release mechanism to trip
is that this system fishes inside both the lead-core and Dipsy setups so you cover the entire stretch of water from directly below the boat to your outer planer board
It is true that when walleyes are exceptionally spooky
they don’t tend to bite presentations directly under the boat as readily as they do lures spread farther away
or you aren’t catching fish on downriggers as consistently as you are on other presentations
lengthen your leader to get the lure away from the cannonball and boat more
fishermen only ran their lures roughly a rod’s length behind the cannonball weight
In the cleaner water we are seeing in the Eastern Basin
it is not uncommon to use as much as 30 feet of leader behind the ball before clipping it into the release
Even when catch rates aren’t amazing on the downrigger lines, it is still effective to use one to place a Fish Hawk probe below. The Fish Hawk X4 is a speed-and-temperature probe that allows you to see temperature breaks and true speed
The currents in the Eastern Basin are wicked and can fluctuate well over 1 mph
If you have ever trolled one direction and caught fish hand over fist
only to troll back the opposite direction and not catch a single fish
you likely have experienced current without even knowing it
The change in speed causes your diving devices to change depth and your lures to change action
The current in the Eastern Basin is an unseen but very important factor in your success or failure
Lots of folks will tell you that “fish don’t grow legs,” but knowing that walleyes will migrate more than 200 miles can make it feel that way when we are searching for them
The good news is that if you have a plan for how to fish the deep water of the Eastern Basin of Lake Erie this summer
you will likely be rewarded with some giant walleyes

The FishHawk Wolverines 8U squad had an outstanding season
boasting the most successful season in FishHawk Youth Baseball history
The team also came in second and third in the two tournaments they didn’t win

Anderson also had a successful season with the team
He finished the season with 110 total wins
Of the 11 local FishHawk players on the team

Anderson said the players have all played together before
the way they had each other’s backs,” he said
Most of the young athletes on the Wolverine’s team have played together since they were in kindergarten
there wasn’t one particular standout player throughout the season
each athlete stepped up to the plate for their chance to shine
leading a game or a single inning as that moment’s team leader
… It was a full team effort,” Anderson said
He said the key to building this teamwork-centered group was a strong coaching staff dedicated to mentoring the young athletes
“The parents were always supportive of anything we did,” he said
it was just start with them and influence kids and keep them positive.”
Anderson said the parents and coaches worked together to motivate the kids
He also said a high-energy pregame speech was key to the positive atmosphere he fostered

Set two top-notch anglers loose in the untouched waters off Andros Island and you have a master class in angling—and pure joy
By Charles Gaines
October/November 2019
Guide Dencil Moxey runs the skiff to a new flat
we leave the mother ship Eleven at a leisurely 8:30 and run north for half an hour to a little shoreline flat
It is a pluperfect bonefish morning: cloudless; the sun just high enough at our backs for good spotting; just enough breeze
shuts down the engine well off the flat and poles in to it against an outgoing tide
thirty feet from the shoreline and no more than six feet off the bow
is a bonefish—lying perfectly still in the water and facing the skiff
and she stands up and does just that—with a perfect backhand wrist flick of a cast that drops the fly one foot in front of the bonefish’s nose
“Your turn,” she says to me when the fish is released
I love fishing with fish hawks—people who never have a blasé day on the water
who fish as if their next meal depends on it
a combination that in my experience tends to make fish want to open their mouths
And I particularly love fishing with female fish hawks
whose oblique approach to the sport paints it for me
So when I had the opportunity last February to fish with two such women off a mother ship in the Bahamas
I crashed it like a trout on caddis and invited my friend Richard French to join us
my favorite fishing partner since she was old enough to hold a rod—at about age six
and then a fly rod by the time she was eight for brook trout and smallmouths in New Hampshire
she and I have angled for dozens of species in dozens of places
and Greta brings to her fishing the same raptor qualities she brings to everything else she does
who has also swooped on her eclectic life like a falcon and has held a fishing world record or two herself
and McCord has caught eight bonefish and had two more come off the hook
firing off pinpoint-accurate forehand and backhand casts
and all the while talking to me over her shoulder in answer to a question I had asked her two hours earlier
The question was this: “So how did you get into fishing for world records?”
a successful commercial real estate developer from Houston—started her fishing forty-two years ago when she was three
sitting in her mother’s lap with a pole on a Texas bass pond he owned
and for McCord and her younger brother and sister
there was no greater pleasure while growing up than following their dad around with a rod or a gun
After seeing A River Runs through It when she was in college at Vanderbilt
and spent the summer after she graduated waiting tables in Jackson Hole
Following a fling with commercial real estate
started from scratch a paint-your-own pottery studio
and turned it into a cash-cow business with five outlets called the Mad Potter
Whenever she was not working or doing mission work with orphans in Russia and Africa
she set her first women’s world record with a 32½-pound redfish caught on 16-pound tippet
In 2013 Tailwaters Fly Fishing Company hired her to host trips and to scout angling locations and lodges
and by the time she and her dad returned to the Seychelles in 2014
she had pushed her number of world records to over thirty
McCord and her father caught seventeen giant trevallies between them
he was diagnosed with stage-four kidney cancer
that he wanted her to keep chasing records
and to think of him being with her to witness every one
She told him he would live to see her set a hundred
She caught the hundredth on Father’s Day the next year—a largemouth bass
from the Texas pond her dad had built and stocked
she has 158 of them and 12 pending—about 50 of those on spinning tackle
We are having lunch now—after a more or less twenty-bonefish morning for McCord that could have served as a master class in flats fishing—tied up boat to boat with photographer Eric Kiel and his guide
“The top female record holder in the world has around two hundred
The way things have been breaking for her recently
Largely because of the reputation her records have earned her
the woman is having way more than a little fun
She leaves in five days to fish in Dubai and then to host a group of anglers in the Seychelles
and Bolivia—eight of the twenty countries in which she has wet lines over the past seven years
She was named the International Game Fish Association Top Female Angler of the Year in 2015 and 2016; won the prestigious Ladies Tarpon Fly Tournament in Islamorada
and others on the TV show Buccaneers and Bones
and she has them in over forty species of fish—from Atlantic salmon to catfish
only 15 percent or fewer of those for records
To fish that much you have to flat love it—records or no records
Guide John Green mans the poling platform while McCord makes a backcast
After lunch Kiel asks McCord to step out of the skiff and wade so he can photograph her casting
a barracuda of about twenty pounds idles up to within ten feet of her and stops—pleading
She runs to the boat for her cuda rod and runs back
The cuda slashes at the red-and-white popper
and takes the fly a rod’s length away from McCord’s bare legs
runs off forty feet of line in an eyeblink
its entire body a silver paroxysm of shakes…and spits the hook
which is owned by the luxury travel company Eleven Experience
is based from October through May on the southwest shore of Andros Island
in the middle of a 1.3-million-acre national park
Aside from two lodges some forty miles to the north
it is the only accommodation on the west side of Andros
which means that it has the vast amount of flats fishing there virtually to itself
Within the roughly thirty-five miles that compose the Eleven’s fishery—from the Middle Bight of Andros to the north to the Water Cays at its southern end—there are thousands of isolated flats
as well as a latticework of fish-holding channels
and lagoons so enormous and complex it would take decades to explore them all
Being waterborne amid all this piscatory wealth tends to induce a relaxed approach to exploiting it
and one of the advantages the Eleven has over land-based lodges is that you are free to set your own schedule: to go out fishing whenever you want and come back in at your pleasure; to eat a box lunch on the water or return to the ship for one of the chef’s inventive repasts
you are fishing from state-of-the-art sixteen-foot Beavertail skiffs
with a team of guides as expert as any in the Bahamas
And what you return to at the end of the day is every bit as high quality as the fishing—a seventy-four-foot Hatteras with three air-conditioned staterooms (for a maximum of six anglers)
a spacious and comfortable main salon with satellite TV and a well-stocked library
There are countless moving parts to an operation as remote and elaborate as the Eleven
making the extremely difficult look easy almost to the point of nonchalance
a thirty-seven-year-old ex–tarpon guide and commercial fisherman from Boca Grande
who ought to wear a ball cap with the words “Captain Competent” printed on it
Working with McLaughlin on the ship are the talented young chef Ethan Greer and an ebullient pint-size mate named Ryan Martin
one of whose agreeable talents is popping up
with exactly what you want exactly when you want it
Which happens this afternoon to be a tray of spicy margaritas presented to McCord and me the moment we step off the skiff onto the mother ship’s fantail
followed by a tray of Greer’s hors d’oeuvres
An hour later we are on the upper deck with Greta
watching the sun expire operatically over Great Bahama Bank and hearing about the thirty or so bonefish Greta hooked while fishing with French in the Water Cays
the three of us are fishing with guide Dencil Moxey in Little Miller’s Creek
Moxey is as delighted with the fugue of fish-hawk femininity in the boat with us as I am
The fishing is slower than yesterday but steady
the women hook practically every fish they see
and talking nonstop between shots about ayurvedic therapy
when I burst out laughing at one of their exchanges
“It gives him a break from all the guy fishing talk
Bob?’ and ‘Could you believe LeBron last night?’”
and Kiel boat out ten minutes from the ship
and walk another five minutes across sun-hardened marl studded with mangrove shoots to a system of small lagoons and creeks
landlocked on three sides with a narrow opening to the ocean seven miles away
There the women and McLaughlin fish from paddleboards in water four to ten inches deep for the thousands of two- to four-pound bonefish that inhabit that system (and many others like it)
McCord and McLaughlin don’t return to the ship until after dark
McCord is on the upper deck mixing up a batch of Fruity Fosters
McLaughlin fires up the twenty-six-foot Regulator tied to the ship
and he and Martini run the rest of us eight miles offshore to a coral reef lying in nine feet of water
McLaughlin and Martini throw out a chum of live anchovies netted earlier that day
and a big barracuda appear behind the stern
and Greta and McCord catch them on streamers and poppers—Greta whooping
Reggae plays at high volume over the Regulator’s sound system
and later snorkel over the coral heads among clouds of snapper
McLaughlin spears a big Nassau grouper and Martini a lionfish for dinner
While Greta sings to herself and hauls in jacks and snapper off the stern
McCord—treading water with her mask on her forehead—watches Martini deposit his lionfish in the live well
Ten minutes later she is holding up her own lionfish at the end of the spear and shouting to Martini
That night Greer makes sashimi out of the lionfish and steams the grouper
serving it with crushed cashews and hoisin sauce
Halfway through her killer cover of “Angel from Montgomery,” I look over at McCord and see tears running down her cheeks
which she makes no effort to hide or wipe away
“I was watching you watching Greta while she sang,” she says
“Seeing how proud you are of your daughter.”

BUCKHANNON – Fish Hawk Acres now offers a daily dinner buffet and rentable sleeping accommodations as the popular downtown bistro continues to innovate and expand
Owner Dale Hawkins said Fish Hawk started offering the buffet this week to entice customers to sit down for dinner at the Main Street market
“We’ve always been slow in the evenings
as far as people coming in and eating here,” Hawkins said
“People usually come in and take stuff to go

but as the business has expanded over the years — most recently by moving the retail items to the nearby Coop — the restaurant now has more seating for guests to enjoy a meal out on the town
Seniors over 65 receive a discounted price of $15 per person
“I’ve been super pleased with the feedback on the buffet,” Hawkins said
guests will be treated to two special ramp-themed buffets

The Hawk’s Nest is now a rentable space offering two bedrooms
“We finished that about the third week of February,” Hawkins said
“We moved all the dining furniture to the old yoga studio
Since we made that first post about the Airbnb
We don’t take the reservation; you go online and make the reservation.”
The space can be found on Airbnb under the name Hawk’s Nest
It costs $150 a night on Fridays and Saturdays and $120 a night for the rest of the week
“The people who have rented it so far are mostly college parents,” Hawkins said
“Some are people who are coming to town to take one of our classes and don’t want to drive home that night
They basically have an apartment with a kitchen and a bathroom.”

but like other restaurants after a couple of years of pandemic take-out food only
My favorite part — back to dining in on fresh
impeccable bistro food inside a charming cafe with an atmosphere of hanging doodads
Because originator and Chef Dale Hawkins (a culinary school grad) recently moved the retail half of Fish Hawk
that previous side is now peppered with a slew of tables providing casual seating for about 60 customers
And it’s not an ordinary dining room — everywhere you look are colorful fresh produce for sale
There are grab-and-go cabinets stocked with
You might just stay from one meal to another and never leave
Fish Hawk has a daily cafe menu of creative and bewitching sandwiches

– All it took was one simple video posted to YouTube for Tyler Brill to find a way to share his love for fishing with millions.
Key West offers a thrilling environment for anglers eager to test their skills against these powerful fish
Incorporating such diverse and adventurous fishing experiences can enrich a channel’s content and captivate a broader audience
“I had a GoPro but I never really used it,” Brill said
That’d be awesome to make some money and fish.’ So that’s basically it
I decided to start the channel and see what happens.”
A majority of Brill’s videos are filmed around the Eastern Panhandle – he now lives in Bunker Hill – which has some of the most beautiful water in the Mountain State
but he also frequents Maryland and Pennsylvania
Situated in the middle of the Potomac River Watershed
the panhandle’s exposed bedrock is made up of limestone deposits dating back to the Cambrian and Ordovician periods up to the Devonian
While karst limestone formations can be found throughout the eastern part of West Virginia
sinkholes and caves – such as the Lost River near Brill’s hometown which spills into the Cacapon River – other areas of the panhandle have beautiful
The limestone deposits help maintain the health of most of the streams
which in turn provides Brill with wonderful fishing opportunities.
as he found that his channel resonates best with trout fishermen
Trout videos are also what pushed his channel into the popular light
his channel began to pick up traction – now
he’s resting at just over 69,000 subscribers
his trout fishing may come off as uncouth to some
“Most people know me as the trout fisherman with spinning gear,” he said
“There’s a lot of YouTubers out there that trout fish with fly fishing gear
there’s still a lot of people that just like trout fishing and aren’t into fly fishing because [it] is a whole different world
I caught my first fish,’ and that part makes you feel good
It’s a lot of hard work but I’ve enjoyed it.”
outside of his full-time job in Winchester
Brill spends his time editing videos and typically publishes one per week
he isn’t letting that slow him down or keep him from reaching milestones.
“I’m always going to want more and shoot for the stars,” he said
“I want a million subscribers and every milestone you reach you want to do better and better
I’m happy and I’m excited about where my channel has gone
[Some people] have been doing this a lot longer than I have that doesn’t have near as many subscribers
but everyone grows different – everyone’s channel is different
“I’ve tried to keep it somewhat simple and do the type of fishing I enjoy the most,” he said.
Rising above clickbait videos and overhyping things
Brill notes he likes the type of fishing that anyone can do
and he doesn’t plan on veering from that.
“You don’t need anything fancy or a $50,000 bass boat,” he said
“You can go down to Walmart and buy a $20 rod and go to the creek
going to the creeks and farm ponds in Wardensville.”
He also finds that tips and tricks resonate with this audience
“There are people who watch your videos that are expert fishermen
but there are people that watch your videos who have never fished before,” he said
‘I know some of you guys know what this is and how to fish
but some of you guys that are watching have never fished before and I’m trying to help you out.’ “
While he’s certainly not underestimating the work he does
Brill does see the strange side of YouTube and how one video can lead to exponential channel growth.
I gained 437 subscribers in a day which is still the most I’ve ever got in a single day,” he said
noting he didn’t do anything special to get them.
It all came down to a video he had already posted
It started getting the normal amount of views each week
Brill recollected that he went to a small creek in Wardensville with a trout magnet tied onto his line
just some largemouth bass and bluegill.
You can be editing your best video and can think
this is the best video I’ve ever made,’ and it gets 5,000 views
I caught a few fish,” and it gets 500,000 views
It’s hard to explain and learn the tricks on how to get a lot of views.”
While Brill cares deeply about his passion and the community he’s built since 2016
he still holds onto his love for the outdoors – it’s the foundation from what he’s built his channel off of.
It clears your mind and you’re just focused on fishing
You work a 40-hour week job and then on the weekends
and even if you’re not catching fish you’re just enjoying being outside – feeling the sun
Go outside and get some fresh air and Vitamin-D from the sun
Let your mind rest from the everyday stresses
I think people understand what it’s like not to go outside and do stuff
Image Details Species Spotlight: Hawaiian Hawk (ʻIo) Image DetailsScientific name: Buteo solitariusHawaiian name: ʻIoCommon name: Hawaiian HawkStatus: Endangered
Only one hawk lives and hunts in the forests of the Hawaiian islands
broad-winged raptor found nowhere else in the world
The ‘io once flew on six of the Hawaiian islands
but today is only found on the island of Hawaii
the largest and youngest island in the Hawaiian archipelago.
‘io are considered a symbol of Hawaiian royalty because of their lofty flight
and they are believed to be an “‘aumakua” – a family or personal god in the shape of an animal
the ‘aumakua would warn and reprimand mortals in their dreams
The ‘io is only 16 to 18 inches in length - like most hawk species
the females are slightly larger - with two distinct color phases
The dark phase or morph ‘io has a dark brown head
while the light color morph has a dark head with a light breast and light underwings
It’s feet and legs are yellowish in adults and greenish in juveniles
the hawk is known to breed only on the island of Hawai‘i
but there have been at least eight observations of the species on the islands of Kaua‘i
and fossils are known from the islands of Moloka‘i and Kaua‘i
The current range of the hawk is estimated to encompass 2,372 square miles
comprising 58.7 percent of the island of Hawai‘i
‘Io are quite territorial and will vigorously defend the areas around their nest and hunting range
They have been known to nest in a variety of native and non-native habitats
but they can be found in much higher densities and have higher reproductive success in native ohia forests
‘Io begin breeding around age 3 or 4 and will mate for life
The males will perform acrobatic courtship displays that can be seen from winter through the spring
The pair begins nest building in the spring and continues until the females lay their clutch usually of 1-2 eggs
Egg laying begins in March and hatching is typically done by July
Both parents help with incubating the egg for 38 days
but once the chick has hatched the male primarily hunts while the female broods
Prior to the introduction of land mammals to the islands
the ‘io probably hunted birds as their main source of food
mongoose and various bird species are all significant parts of the ‘io diet
‘Io hunt and nest in a wide variety of habitats
While they generally prefer dense native forests
they are also frequently seen in agricultural areas as well
The Hawaiian Hawk was listed as endangered in 1967
Since that time the population has remained low
habitat loss due to invasive plants and the spread of rapid ohia death continue to be a threat to the species
The establishment of the Hakalau Forest NWR (north Hilo region) in 1985
the Kona Forest Unit of the Hakalau Forest NWR in 1997
and The Nature Conservancy’s Kona Hema Preserve (south Kona region) between 1999 and 2003 have all added important protected habitat for the ‘io.
The Hakalau Unit of the Hakalau NWR was established with the primary purpose of promoting the recovery of endangered forest birds and their habitat
There have also been several projects undertaken at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park and on private lands on the island of Hawai’i aimed at native forest conservation that have likely benefited the ‘io overall
plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people

Overlooking the northern end of Lower Ausable Lake in Keene are two open ledges which are popular destinations for hikers: Indian Head and Fish Hawk Cliffs
and Sawteeth Mountain and the Lower Great Range to the right
The Fish Hawk Cliffs are reachable in 0.2 miles via the connector trail from Indian Head to the Mt
Colvin Trail but prepare for a steep into a col along the way
What follows is some of the history behind Fish Hawk Cliffs which you may not be aware of
As for where the name “Fish Hawk” came from
Tony speculates the famous Keene Valley artist
may have come up with the name for the cliffs
since he “was a major force in ATIS for many years and likely inspired/directed my father to cut the trail.” On the other hand
he thinks the name could have been applied many years before by those who rowed their boats along the Lower Ausable Lake
observing the ospreys nesting on the cliffs
“Fish Hawk Cliffs.” (Source: Laura Weston)
the granddaughter of the famous Keene Valley artist
Laura provided a scan of a painting done by her grandfather in 1940 which has “Fish Hawk Cliffs” written along the left-hand side
Harold’s oldest daughter and last surviving child
provided some insight into her father’s naming of the cliffs
& use his arms to pull himself up as necessary into the areas
She said Grandma never went.” Laura’s grandmother was Faith Borton Weston
Huberts in 1920 and hiked and bushwhacked to many of Keene’s mountains
He served as secretary of the Adirondack Trail Improvement Society (ATIS) from 1948 to 1968 and spearheaded the revitalization of its trails following World War 2
for he once wrote in the draft for his 1971 book
Freedom in the Wilds: A Saga of the Adirondacks
“[The Adirondacks] is where I belong
No where else is my home.” It is through his many works of art of the region and his work with the ATIS that Harold expressed his passion for the Great North Woods
Harold Francis Weston was born on February 14
Burns Weston (for whom Weston Peak in the Nun-da-ga-o Range is named)
You could say the Adirondacks were in Weston’s genes
considering the legacies of his father and maternal grandfather
a 28,000-acre tract in the Totten and Crossfield Purchase whose timber was under the threat of being logged
Township 48 included all of Lower Ausable Lake
and many of the High Peaks such as Haystack
The group named the tract the Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR)
along with Felix Aler and William Augustus White
the first trail maintenance group in the state
The ATIS has cut and continues to manage the trails on the lands of the AMR
Harold’s parents gave their son a taste of the Adirondacks at an early age through the summers they spent at their cottage in St
Harold recalled how they watched the sunset from the summit
spent the night in a lean-to along the Marcy Trail that was built by his great uncle
and went up to Skylight the next morning to watch the sunrise
Harold and his brother acted as guides for their father’s prominent friends
These were among many hiking and camping excursions which built up Harold’s hardiness for this rugged and unforgiving wilderness environment
the Weston family lived and traveled in Europe
In August following his family’s return to America
the 17-year-old embarked on a 16-day hiking and canoeing trip across the High Peaks region
According to Foster and Welsh in Wild Exuberance:
“He trotted over trails with a seventy-pound canoe
swam around his island camp before heading off for the day’s journey
and on the final day on the way back to St
Huberts he walked and rowed thirty miles – running the last three and one-quarter miles in fifteen minutes
The following day he played seven sets of tennis and that night danced and played the mandolin at a campfire gathering.”
It was shortly after Harold’s 16-day adventure that he contracted polio
which left the nerve below his left knee so damaged that he walked with a limp for the rest of his life
he built up his strength to where he could walk and hike with one cane
He approached the Adirondack peaks again with as much vigor and fortitude as many of today’s hard-core hikers – if not more so
Harold attended the Ogunquit Art School run by Hamilton Easter Field
and ardent patron of the modern art community who was influenced by the work of Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse
Field inspired Harold to adopt the modernist view of art
He would go on to graduate magna cum laude from Harvard in 1916 with a degree in Fine Arts
when our nation inevitably became involved in World War 1
he felt obligated to lend himself to the war effort in service to his country
The perpetual limp incurred by his bout of polio prevented him from serving in the military
so he signed up with the International YMCA
which was involved with the British Army in the Near East
During his three and a half years of service
Harold established the Baghdad Art Club for British soldiers
By the time he returned to New York in 1920
he decided to devote the rest of his life to painting
The few months he spent in an art school in New York City left Harold dispirited
“To learn how to paint from objects or models that meant nothing to me seemed to external a process
I wanted to get down to what I thought were fundamentals alone with paint
Huberts with the woods and mountains I had known so many summers
the techniques of how to paint would work out.” In the spring of 1920
Huberts to begin in earnest his life-long vocation
He and a local carpenter built a one-room studio not far from the Ausable Club
The frame of this rustic hovel was constructed from spruce
the only heat to be had was from a pot-bellied boxstove which he kept stoked with two-foot-length logs; he claimed the fire went out only once or twice during the winter
There was also an outhouse in the balsam grove to the rear of the studio
unbothered by the mice who thieved his apples and ate them by his feet
One of his modes of relaxation would be sitting by the fire and smoking a cigar while watching the moon rise over Giant Mountain
Of this “rugged simplicity,” Harold wrote:
“I was as profligate with canvas and paint as I was frugal in living – spoon
high lumberman’s boots and snowshoes
and monthly supplies from the village three miles away
These and my paints were the essentials.”
Harold holed himself up in his cold studio
dedicating his time and effort to painting
her grandfather had “a passion for paint more powerful than common sense,” so much so that “he stayed on mountaintops past sunset
hobbling back down on his good leg in the dark.” Many of the artists of Keene Valley who came before Harold seemed to be constrained to the contours and shapes of the landscape before them
some took liberties in accentuating the pointedness of summits
Harold gave his first solo show at the Montross Galleries in New York City
Most of the paintings were his Adirondack landscapes
The show was an astounding success and widely praised by critics
Art critic Ralph Flint exclaimed in the Christian Science Monitor: “In his pictures [there is] something different
a proclamation of a bigger belief in beauty than is usually heard in the galleries.”
Harold married a young Quaker woman named Faith Borton
whom he met the prior year at a winter party in St
Faith was not averse to participating in her husband’s wilderness adventures
Faith was with her husband on the summit of Gothics
Harold recalled the two “started down the precipitous side of the mountain toward the Lower Lake
dodging slides and slashes without a trail
and only a sliver of moon to guide our way
Since I have to walk with a cane or staff
I slid along in the dark slowly as a snail probing ahead with his feeler
We reached the road home after the moon had set and walked back to St
Harold rose to prominence as an American artist in the 1930s
with his works exhibited in galleries such as the Phillips Memorial Gallery in Washington
and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City
His work expanded from Adirondack landscapes to landscape nudes (Faith was his model)
through a commission by the Treasury Relief Act Project
he painted murals in the lobby of the General Services Administration Building in Washington
As vice chairman of the National Council on the Arts and Government
Harold was active in urging art patronage by the Federal and state governments
Harold Weston sketching on top of Mount Marcy
Harold employed considerable effort in rehabilitating the trails on AMR lands
The maintenance of the AMR’s trails was largely abandoned during World War 2 due to many of the trail maintainers of draft age being taken for the war effort or left to work in the war industries
which involved responsibility for an ambitious program of trail maintenance
Among the first of his trail crew were two young men
Harold also led the effort to replace many of the rotting or missing trail signage
in which they carved and painted new signs
Harold also created a chart showing the location and wording of over 400 ATIS trail signs
Harold and several others created an ATIS trail map
which provided brief descriptions of the 35 trails in the St
Huberts and Keene Valley region and sold for twenty-five cents
Another gentleman who was on the ATIS trail crew was Tony Goodwin’s father
When Harold hired Jim in the summer of 1952 to head the trail crew
he gave him a stern warning: “Remember now
Jim reported back to his boss that he followed Harold’s directives to a T
“You did?!” According to Jim in his memoir
And Gladly Guide: “Apparently those Draconian instructions were only Harold’s way of suggesting that we should take the job seriously
Some earlier trail crews had not shaped up as well.”
The third edition of this book was edited by his granddaughter
Freedom in the Wilds: An Artist in the Adirondacks
He left a legacy in Keene Valley and is among the pantheon of great artists to have worked in the Adirondacks
Fish Hawk Cliffs apparently went by another name: the Devil’s Pulpit
In a sketch written by the 19th-century author and poet
which was published in the June 1883 edition of Outing: An Illustrated Magazine of Recreation
he recounts canoeing across Lower Ausable Lake with the famous Adirondack guide
Orson Schofield “Old Mountain” Phelps
he pointed up and noted “Indian Head” on the left and “Devil’s Pulpit” to its right
that “he was frequently likened to his Satanic Majesty
as he often took clergymen ‘up thar.'” I could find no other reference to “Devil’s Pulpit” in any other historical literature beyond what Bruce has written
this term for Fish Hawk Cliffs appears known to only Old Mountain himself

Newsome High and Bevis and Stowers elementary schools in Lithia
As for the seven teachers at work at FishHawk Elementary for 20 years
“that’s really a testimony to the quality of the school and the community,” Hamilton said
“Teachers don’t stay for that length of time in places that are not great places to teach
When I see teachers who have been in the same place for 20 years
I know the principals at that school were great principals and that the parents at those schools were great school supporters.”

Melissa Patterson Frigo discussed her 20 years at the school and the long-serving principal who opened the school in 2004
Principal Pam Bush stayed until Steven Sims
“Pam was always very understanding about people who had children,” Frigo said
“She was always there for us when we had problems in the classroom
offering suggestions to help us in our teaching
Frigo referred to the plaque on the wall that marks the 2004 establishment of the school
It notes the school’s falcon mascot and its founding motto
“Soaring to excellence in academic achievement and character education.” It notes also the charter staff
including assistant principal Ginger Elea and the seven teachers who continue to work there today: Frigo
Bush gave a “beautiful speech,” as did Barbara Franques
as the community joined together to remember a special school at a special time taking root in a burgeoning community
“I’m blessed to have been here this many years,” Frigo said
noting that when she started there were four fourth grade classrooms
and nine likewise for just about every grade level
noting that while his style differs from Bush’s
he “makes it fun” and also is “very understanding and always checking in on us in our classrooms.”
While change is ever-constant in education
testing and the ever-evolving use of technology
that’s how I refer to this school,” Frigo said
I love my grade level and I love the community

farm-fresh food isn’t all that’s cooking at Fish Hawk Acres these days
The West Main Street restaurant and catering business
which specializes in preparing locally sourced dishes and lavish desserts
showcased its newly renovated second floor on Valentine’s Day weekend with a sure-to-enhance-romance special set menu
The Hawk’s Nest and Perch Gallery private dining areas made their debut over the weekend in mid-February
but that’s not all chef Dale Hawkins and co-owner Teresa Lipps have up their sleeve
they’re hoping to double the space on FHA’s first floor with a market side
Hawkins recently sat down with My Buckhannon to discuss the recently finished and furnished 1,500-square foot second-floor space
which is collectively known as the Main Street Co-op
there’s a front room called The Perch and a second cozy dining area called the Hawk’s Nest
The modern farmhouse-style dining space is flexible
Hawkins and catering manager Sara Bednarski say
with the front room able to accommodate 10 people and the Hawk’s Nest designed to seat from 16 to 20 guests
“If someone wanted to have a bridal shower
if they just wanted to have a luncheon or a small intimate dinner
The Hawk’s Nest will also function as a place where the Fish Hawk crew can meet with catering clients
“Because we do so much catering for weddings and other special events
we wanted a place where we could meet with the bride and groom or a client that was a little quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of downstairs,” Hawkins said
While FHA plans to use the co-op as a space in which to cater special events
Hawkins said he wanted to ensure it was budget-friendly
“We were thinking of the space and how under-utilized it was
we didn’t have an idea of what to do with it – all we knew was that we wanted to do something,” Hawkins said
‘We need to make each room be able to pay for itself,’ and the more diverse it can be
the more likely it is to be able to rent it.”
“We didn’t intend to gut the whole place and redo it
the long and narrow front room will serve as a small private dining area
a boardroom and an art gallery for local historian
who regularly decorates Fish Hawk Acres main headquarters downstairs in sync with the seasons
Tenney is likely to show hold scheduled showings of his body of work from Old Orchard Studio
“He’s been the historian for as long as I can remember in Buckhannon
“but he just doesn’t have any room to show it
‘Well I wonder if Noel would want to do a gallery here
maybe we could put it in the front room,’ which we’re calling ‘The Perch.”
FHA also added Sunday brunches to its repertoire
something savory and a hearty lunch option
customers can order more than the special of the day or what’s on the sandwich menu
“We’re twisting how we do things down here
so we have a dinner menu with five entrees and a selection of appetizers to broaden dinner options,” Hawkins said
“You could still get a salad or a sandwich or whatever
but you have the option of a filet or a stuffed breast of chicken or a half a pound of steamed shrimp with cocktail sauce or salmon.”
But the biggest news is that Fish Hawk is knocking down the wall between its current location and the adjacent storefront to the right – and moving its coolers and grab-and-go options into a new market area
The marketplace will eventually feature an oval-shaped wine bar
the new market section will sell fresh-cut flowers and Blenko glass
Hawkins hopes that section of FHA opens in May
In the meantime, anyone interested in reserving the newly redone private dining area may call the catering office at 304-473-7890 or email catering@fishhawkacreswv.com

Wildfire Today
The red dots on the map above represent heat detected on the Fishhawk Fire by a satellite at 2:12 p.m
It is uncertain if they indicate actual surface spread of the fire toward the southwest
or if the heat was detected in an intense convection column in the atmosphere above the fire
The smoke in the upper atmosphere was blowing off to the east
could have pushed the smoke and the fire to the south
During the fixed wing mapping flight at 8:19 p.m
on September 3 there was intense fire activity on the south edge of the fire
(To see all articles on Wildfire Today about the Fishhawk Fire, including the most recent, click here.)
The Fishhawk Fire is 38 miles west of Cody
six miles east of the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park
Scroll down to see more maps and information
A mapping flight Tuesday night found that the Fishhawk Fire 38 miles west of Cody
Wyoming spread up to about one-quarter mile in all directions Tuesday except on the east side where it has reached a steep hog-back ridge 10,000 to 11,000 feet above sea level
A Type 2 Incident Management Team will in-brief Wednesday prior to assuming command of the fire
The resources assigned to the fire as of Tuesday evening included no hand crews
and 3 helicopters for a total of 29 personnel
The 4,581-acre fire so far is confined to a north-south drainage that has a similar high elevation ridge on the west side
so it is possible that firefighters are expecting the 10,000-foot ridges with light fuels to contain the perimeter on the east and west sides
In their long term plans, fire managers on the Fishhawk Fire should plan for extreme winds. On August 28, 2008 the Powell Tribune wrote this about the Gunbarrel Fire :
“The winds are just howling,” Clint Dawson said Wednesday
describing the wind’s rate around the Gunbarrel Fire
Dawson is the zone fire manager for Shoshone National Forest
In the valley — in the vicinity of the newly-relocated Gunbarrel Fire camp at Buffalo Bill State Park — the wind was gusting to 40-60 mph in the early afternoon on Wednesday
The new incident command camp is just above the reservoir west of Cody
An aircraft flying over the fire Wednesday reported winds reaching 115 mph at 11,000 feet
The fire was spotting on the east side of 12,000-foot high Trout Peak
Wyoming spread quickly after it was reported Monday evening
Our very unofficial estimate based on satellite data shows that as of 4 a.m
Tuesday it had burned approximately 2,800 acres
One of Colorado’s multi-misson aircraft
will be mapping the fire Tuesday morning and should provide more accurate information
The Fishhawk Fire is 4 miles south of Highway 14/16/20 and about 6 miles east of the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park
It is burning in rugged terrain in the Washakie Wilderness of the Shoshone National Forest and is currently unstaffed
aerial resources had difficulty flying in the area
the Shoshone National Forest Fire Management Officer said
“Appropriate actions will be taken when it is needed and where it is safe to do so with the highest probability of success
The amount of standing dead timber and the hazardous terrain in the vicinity of the fire makes it unsafe to put firefighters near the current location of the fire.”
15 miles west of the Fishhawk Fire in Yellowstone National Park on the east shore of Yellowstone Lake
Since it was reported August 26 it has burned approximately 160 acres and is being managed rather than suppressed
The fire does not pose a threat to visitors and all services and roads leading into and through the park are open

The fire is burning between Yellowstone National Park and Cody
Strong winds gusting up to 33 mph along with low humidities caused the Fishhawk Fire to more than double in size Wednesday to 10,321 acres
It spread two miles to the north and the same distance to the south
The spread to the west and east is slowed by steep ridges going up to 9,000 to 11,000 feet
However the overnight mapping shows the northeast section of the fire crossed the ridge at the 9,800-foot level
establishing fire in the adjacent drainage to the east
MDT mapping flight on Thursday the Fishhawk Fire was 1.5 to 2 miles from Highway 14/16/20 and the Camp Buffalo Bill Scout Camp
Wyoming and about 6 miles east of the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park
Wednesday night the Park County Sheriff’s Office issued a mandatory evacuation notice for the Scout Camp as well as the cabins in the Kitty Creek drainage
“…the fire has breached a line of protection that indicates a full evacuation is necessary.”
The Rocky Mountain Type 2 Blue Team assumed command of the fire at 6:00 am
however the Forest Service will attempt to protect structures and private property
On Thursday structure protection work continued in the North Fork corridor along Highway 14/16/20
Firefighters have been building fireline around structures in Kitty Creek in addition to implementing structure protection around the nearby lodges
the southern perimeter of the fire will not be staffed by personnel
While the 2008 Gunbarrel Fire north of Highway 14/16/20 burned at least 67,000 acres
there have been relatively few fires in recorded history south of the highway
Much of the vegetation in the area has not burned in more than 80 years

BROWNSVILLE — A tugboat torn from its moorings at the Brownsville Marina Sunday night ran aground on a nearby sandbar bordering Illahee Road.
No one was on board the 64-foot tug Fishhawk
when winds and turbulent waves ripped it from bull rails along the Brownsville Marina's breakwater
said the vessel had been secured with heavy duty ropes
The Coast Guard reported winds on Sunday night of up to 40 knots with choppy waves three feet tall.
"I've never seen seas so rough here," Herman said
marina staff and the Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound's Incident Management Division responded
The vessel drifted south and came to rest on the sandbar
Coast Guard officials said there were no injuries and no resulting pollution from when it ran aground.
The owners planned to re-float the vessel at high tide and assess potential damage.
