During the University of Michigan-Flint's Spring 2025 Commencement
Alexander described the moment as an intersection
a time when years of hard work and sacrifice turn to exciting possibilities and the opportunity to make an impact in a rapidly changing world.
Speaking during four ceremonies at the Riverfront Conference Center on May 3-4
Alexander shared three points of wisdom with close to 1,000 graduating students from the university's five schools and colleges.
your education is more than just a personal accomplishment; it is a privilege
one that places a responsibility on your shoulders to lead and to serve," he said
reflecting the ethos of engaged citizenship with which a UM-Flint education is imbued.
commit yourself to lifelong learning," Alexander said
urging the Class of 2025 to seek out professional development or to earn their next certificate or degree
"Success is not a destination; it's a journey
and it requires continuous effort and self-reflection
and to find new solutions when faced withobstacles will be one of your greatest strengths," said Alexander
acknowledging that graduates will have to be nimble not only professionally but also in their broader lives to overcome the numerous challenges that arise on the path to success and self-fulfillment.
the weekend's speakers included Yener Kandogan
interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs and interim dean for the School of Management; Michael Behm
who addressed the crowd of graduates and their guests via a video message; and four student speakers
Each ceremony's highlight was the remarks the selected student speaker gave
Each speaker reflected on the challenges and successes of their academic journeys and shared a message of hope for future opportunities and personal growth.
Lyons seeks to help others in every possible domain
In addition to earning her bachelor's degree in elementary education
the Grand Blanc resident also worked as a certified nursing assistant and substitute taught in special education classrooms.
'Why don't you stick to one thing?'" Lyons said to fellow graduates and their families during the 11 a.m.
and people who I would love and care for like family
I encourage you to remember to empower yourself
Lyons plans to build on her CNA experience and will enroll in UM-Flint's Accelerated Second Degree
She hopes to work in special education during the week and then as a nurse on the weekends
"I'd encourage current and future students to just keep going
to know that nothing worthwhile will ever come easy
and to try to be their most authentic selves," Lyons said
there is one common thread: At the end of the day
it's all about loving people and caring for them."
Manners aptly compared her college experience to tending a garden
She thought back to the nerves and excitement of beginning her studies at the university."Those early emotions were like the first rainfall on a garden—unexpected
They gave us the energy to take root and begin growing," Manners said during the 1:30 p.m
"Stepping into the nursing program at UM-Flint
we were given the soil to plant something meaningful
just like a seedling breaking through the soil
the first time we truly felt confident in our skills and knowledge – each accomplishment was a glimpse of sunlight that showed us we were on the right path
Manners was the grand prize winner of the 2024 Zillion Solutions competition
which challenges students of all majors to devise an innovative
entrepreneurial solution to a real-world problem
Her concept was color-changing dressings that health care providers could use to treat IV complications
but just as a garden flourishes through every change
and individuals we are meant to be," Manners said
graduation is simultaneously an opportunity to celebrate the people who helped her along the way and look forward to new challenges."It's humbling to think that we've built up all this knowledge
all this experience … and we're about to go back to being rookies
paired with our acknowledgement that there are many communities that helped us get here
including the community UM-Flint gave us along with our degrees," she said during the 11 a.m.
Yasin made the most of the opportunities available on campus for UM-Flint undergraduates
she conducted research into omega-3 and omega-6 lipids with Matthew Fhaner
associate professor of analytical chemistry
She also investigated the potential benefits of self-driving cars for people with Parkinson's disease as part of the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program
which allows students to earn a paycheck while conducting real-world research alongside faculty.
I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude; I am confident that the values I cultivated here will guide me in the years ahead
Grateful for getting to see the post-COVID empty hallways turn into full hallways
Thank you to all of the professors who have taught me and have been patient with me," she said.
Ackerman echoed the chancellor's urging for graduates to adopt a flexible mindset in their endeavors.
"We are entering into a world that is evolving at an unprecedented pace
Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence are transforming the way that we live and work
and complex global issues demand solutions," said the finance major from Burton
critical thinking and capabilities UM-Flint has instilled in each of us help us take on these challenges and take advantage of new opportunities
and use everything that this university has given to you."
Ackerman worked as a recruitment and outreach specialist for Mott Community College while a student and served as president of the Financial Management Association on campus.
The recorded live stream of each ceremony is available online:
Photos from each ceremony will be available on the university's Flickr page after 3 p.m

(WXYZ) — The deck was stacked against Kassius Lofton from the day he was born
was diagnosed with Down syndrome and was developmentally delayed
he could not walk on his own and was non-verbal
See Ross Jones' full investigation in the video below:
So when bruises started to appear all over his body
family members feared the worst and Kass couldn’t tell them where they came from
“I received the pictures of him with the belt buckle marks on one side (of his face)
and a long scar down the other side,” recalled his aunt
“He had two black eyes and bruises all over his back.”
After seeing the photos of Kass’ injuries last July
She shared them with Children’s Protective Services
He cannot even say ouch,” she said through tears
All it took was for me to see a 2-year-old with black eyes and bruises all over him.”
RELATED: Detroit boy told CPS his mom wanted 'to kill him' months before prosecutors say she did
sending multiple photos that showed bruises and marks on Kass’s body
Carradine and other family members say they asked Kass’ mom
“It was his white blood cells,” Carradine recalled being told
“I kind of got the story that (it was) roughhousing
Carradine said she believed Wellons was not being truthful
Kass would stay with his godmother for the next month
she said she was contacted by a CPS caseworker and told that Kass needed to be returned to his mother
“(CPS) sent me a text message,” Carradine said
they wanted to close it or dismiss it or whatever...we also need Kass to return home by 2 p.m..”
It is not clear what steps CPS took to determine that it was safe for Kass to return to his mom
Within minutes of learning he would be returned
Wellons-Watson began calling and texting the same caseworker she’d alerted to Kass’s injuries
“I was battling with them not to return him,” she said
“I had sent them text messages and photographs
I had gone even so far as to reach out to Lansing to keep him from being returned.”
RELATED: Years before Na'Ziyah Harris murder case, CPS warned repeatedly about alleged killer
Text messages reviewed by 7 News Detroit show that Wellons-Watson raised concerns Kass might be beaten inside the home
But the caseworker responded that she could no longer talk to her about the case
Wellons-Watson started sending e-mails to anyone she could at the state department overseeing CPS
“And it came back saying that someone would get back with me within 48 hours,” she recalled
Two days after CPS ordered that Kass be returned to his mother
Flint Police would be called to the apartment complex where his mother lived
Kass was found in his bed covered in injuries and not breathing
a CPS caseworker reported visiting Kass’s home to check on him
Flint Police officer David Fiebernitz testified that upon entering the home
he observed “bruising to both sides” of Kass’s face and “bruising to the right rib cage."
“I don’t think anyone meant for him to be hurt,” said grandfather Emmanuel Wellons
Kass suffered multiple fractured ribs and contusions to multiple organs
His death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner
caused by blunt force injuries of the abdomen
Both his mother and her boyfriend have pleaded not guilty
the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said it could not comment on specifics
but said they are “deeply committed to ensuring the health and safety of all children (and) will work with law enforcement to ensure all responsible parties are held accountable.”
The department said it is "heartbroken over the death of Kassius and extends its sympathies to his family and friends during this extraordinarily difficult time."
The criminal cases against both Tiarra Wellons and Deon Johnson were bound over to circuit court last month
Attorneys for both Wellons and Johnson maintain their clients’ innocence and say they look forward to their day in court
Eight months since she begged CPS not to return her nephew to his mother
Brenda Wellons-Watson says the agency failed at its most basic duty
“Standing up to believe that I did the right thing is causing me to be uncomfortable with my own family,” she said

KDWP to Open Improved Section of Flint Hills Trail Near Ottawa on May 17
TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) announced the completion and opening of a newly improved section of the Flint Hills Trail State Park in Franklin County
located west of Ottawa between Louisiana Terrace and Iowa Road
will officially open to the public on Saturday
visitors will enjoy uninterrupted travel along 93 miles of continuous trail from Osawatomie to Council Grove — offering expanded access to one of the longest rail-trails in the United States
while also increasing safety and connecting trail-goers to the scenic beauty of the Flint Hills
The project was made possible through a Transportation Alternatives Program grant awarded and administered by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT)
Construction included a 10-foot-wide multi-use trail surface
and improvements to three existing bridges
These enhancements not only provide a smoother trail experience but also improve user safety by allowing visitors to cross railroad tracks safely and eliminating the need for a 3.4-mile detour on county roads
“The Flint Hills Trail is a shining example of how Kansas continues to invest in meaningful outdoor spaces,” said KDWP Secretary Christopher Kennedy
we’re not just building trail—we’re connecting communities
and helping more Kansans experience the natural beauty of our state.”
A ribbon-cutting celebration for the improved section will be planned at a later date
KDWP has long-range plans to develop the trail along its full length as funding becomes available
Future improvements will continue to enhance outdoor recreation opportunities while providing safer

The 2.3-mile segment can be found west of Ottawa between Louisiana and Iowa Terrace
Department leaders said visitors will be able to enjoy uninterrupted travel along 93 miles of continuous trail between Osawatomie and Council Grove
The system offers expanded access to one of the longest rail-trails in the U.S.
KDWP noted that the project was made possible with a grant from the Transportation Alternatives Program, which the Kansas Department of Transportation awarded
pedestrian bridge and improvements to three existing bridges
Conservationists indicated that the improvements provide a smoother trail experience and improve safety across railroad tracks
which now eliminates the need for a 3.4-mile detour on country roads
A ribbon-cutting celebration is expected to be announced at a later date
that long-range plans to develop the trail along its full length remain a priority as funding becomes available

LANSING — The promotion scandal at the Michigan State Police Flint post
which derailed the careers of seven officers accused of participating in rigged exams
Five MSP troopers who were passed over for promotion to sergeant
and later learned copies of exam questions were provided to favored applicants
have sued the MSP and other defendants in the Michigan Court of Claims
and caused a conspiracy to fraudulently hide their manipulations to the hiring process and the sham nature of the promotional processes involved," Troopers Dennis Hartman
and Stephen Cavner said in a lawsuit filed April 23
The MSP "has not taken any action to remediate the violation of plaintiffs' rights or to otherwise make them whole for the manipulation of these hiring processes," the suit alleges
Asked to comment on the allegations in the lawsuit
MSP spokeswoman Shanon Banner said "the integrity of our promotional process is of the utmost importance," and the agency took "swift action" against those responsible
The five troopers are seeking unspecified damages
In addition to the MSP, named as defendants are: Yvonne Brantley, a 1st lieutenant and the Flint post commander who retired in the wake of the scandal to avoid being fired; Jared Chiros
who allegedly was provided copies of exam questions ahead of his promotion to sergeant and who resigned from the MSP after blowing the whistle on the scandal in September 2023; Michael Phillipps
an MSP lieutenant who was allegedly involved in the exam-rigging and retired rather than face discipline
another lieutenant allegedly involved in the exam-rigging who was demoted to trooper
The suit alleges that although the MSP has acknowledged that exam questions were provided in advance to favored candidates
the MSP has never investigated whether other aspects of the promotion process were manipulated
such as the scores awarded for exams and interviews
In addition to the defendants named in the suit, Sergeants Kenneth Monroe and Nicholas Medina were demoted to trooper in the wake of the scandal. Lt. Thomas Dhooge, who acknowledged receiving questions in advance of his own promotion exam but claimed he never used them was fired but ordered reinstated under a 2024 civil service hearing officer's ruling

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
which the University of Michigan-Flint is recognizing with a series of impactful events aimed at raising awareness
supporting survivors and fostering prevention
Central to this year's programming is the annual Take Back the Night rally
acclaimed filmmaker and activist Byron Hurt will deliver the keynote address
The event underscores UM-Flint's commitment to creating a safe and inclusive campus environment
His work has been pivotal in promoting gender equity and bystander intervention strategies
participants will take to the streets for a community march
sending a clear message of solidarity with survivors and a call for systemic change
and uniting our community in action," said Samara Hough
director of UM-Flint's Center for Gender and Sexuality
"It's a time to honor the courage of survivors while also recognizing our collective responsibility to foster change."
Sexual violence remains a pervasive issue on college campuses and beyond. According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network
13% of college students experience sexual assault during their academic careers
This includes 24% of women and 23% of transgender or gender-nonconforming students
one in three women and one in six men experience sexual violence in their lifetime
more than two-thirds of incidents go unreported
"These numbers remind us why events like Take Back the Night are so critical," Hough said
"They not only raise awareness but also create spaces where survivors feel seen
Take Back the Night began in the 1960s in Belgium and England as women protested being unable to walk alone at night
The movement grew from there to become a worldwide event
National resources like RAINN's hotline are also available to ensure survivors have access to help whenever they need it
UM-Flint is hosting several other events for the campus community throughout April:
Hough explained that Sexual Assault Awareness Month at UM-Flint is not just about recognizing the problem; it's about taking action
sharing resources or starting conversations about consent and healthy relationships
every effort contributes to a safer community
we can cultivate a culture of respect," said Hough

the University of Michigan-Flint will be a key partner in ensuring the state's underserved communities have access to and training in these essential tools.
UM-Flint's Office of Economic Development is now a regional hub for the Michigan Inclusive Training Technology and Equity Network program
The hub will serve communities in Michigan's Prosperity Region 6
Led by the Michigan High-Speed Internet Office and funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Digital Equity Act
this initiative advances the Michigan Digital Equity Plan and promotes digital inclusion statewide through regional coordination
digital training and support for underserved communities
OED was awarded $746,405 through a competitive grant process aimed at providing institutions with resources to become regional hubs that offer digital skills training
The grant will be used to fund a variety of initiatives
such as research into areas of the community where digital access is scarce or focused grants that allow the university to support community partners who are critical to MITTEN resources
"Closing the digital divide has many components: providing reliable and affordable broadband connectivity
access to technology and digital literacy," said Paula Nas
"UM-Flint's MITTEN programming focuses on this third component by offering digital literacy training to help individuals develop the digital skills needed to effectively use technology
we are grateful for the opportunity to provide a wide range of digital skills offerings to residents of all ages throughout the region."
OED will digitize its current suite of digital finance
and economics educational materials to make them more available throughout the state
The department will also hire a regional digital coordinator through the American Connected Corps
who will work closely with regional partners to assess the region's digital literacy needs
MITTEN partnership activities on campus are not limited to OED
will utilize MITTEN funding to improve research on digital accessibility and literacy for senior citizens
"The MITTEN grant will help support the UM-Flint Digital Divide research team to teach older adults how to best use internet technology," said Sheryl Groden
assistant professor of social work and co-chair of the Center on Aging
"The interprofessional Digital Divide team – comprised of faculty from social work
occupational therapy and public health – has worked with older adults in Genesee County and the MITTEN grant will allow us to expand the training to older adults in an additional six counties throughout Michigan."
Nas emphasized that partnership is the key to success in initiatives such as this – OED has earmarked more than half of the funding for community and campus organizations
The efforts of UM-Flint's Center on Aging to improve digital literacy in older adults will be bolstered by MITTEN funding
which will use its funding to expand upon existing digital literacy training programs available at each of its six-county America's Job Centers in the Flint region
"These and many more funds have been allocated to work alongside community organizations in the region to expand upon the impactful work they are doing to address the digital skills gap," said Nas.

In the spring of 2014, state-appointed emergency managers in Flint, Mich., cut costs by switching the city’s drinking water supply from that used by nearby Detroit to the Flint River—which resulted in water contaminated with lead and Legionnaires’ disease
and spurred a years-long crisis with effects that reverberate a decade later
Ten years after the onset of the Flint water crisis
policy changes have improved water quality in Flint
and community response to the crisis helped make concepts like environmental racism and environmental justice more salient to national politics
“The politics that happened [around water quality] in Michigan have really played a big role at the federal scale,” said Olivia David
a policy researcher and doctoral candidate at the University of Michigan
The city switched its water system back to the one used by Detroit in October 2015. That system, now known as the Great Lakes Water Authority, sources its water from the Detroit River and Lake Huron
In 2018, Michigan revised its Lead and Copper Rule
requiring Flint and all other municipalities in the state to replace all lead water service lines (pipes that connect homes to community water mains) by 2041. According to the updated rule
the lead pipes must be replaced at the expense of the water supplier

In 2023, the state passed its Filter First laws
requiring schools and childcare centers to install lead-reducing filters regardless of whether the water had been found to contain lead
Pauli noted that advocates in other states are looking to Michigan’s laws to provide a framework for Filter First legislation elsewhere
Pauli said the Flint water crisis also informed new efforts to regulate contaminants that weren’t a problem in Flint but affected other parts of the state, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
“The aggressive manner in which [PFAS contamination has] been confronted by the state of Michigan
is partly a product of the more vigilant attitude that we’re taking around environmental contamination coming out of Flint,” Pauli said
Advocates in Flint acknowledge the progress that has been made but are still pushing for policy changes
are calling for a repeal of the law that allowed emergency managers to take control of the city government in 2014 to begin with.
Advocacy organizations have also been working for years to pass a federal law called the WATER (Water Affordability, Transparency, Equity, and Reliability) Act
which would allocate funding for water infrastructure
And Flint still faces other environmental justice stressors, such as the construction of an asphalt plant in a predominantly Black
“It’s pretty clear that [the Flint water crisis] had a big influence in putting environmental justice on the map in a new way.”
In addition to concrete policy changes, the Flint water crisis helped make the concept of environmental justice a national discussion. In 2023, the Biden administration allocated funds to the Justice40 initiative
whose goal is that “40 percent of the overall benefits of certain Federal climate
and other investments flow to disadvantaged communities that are marginalized by underinvestment and overburdened by pollution.”
The Flint water crisis changed how policymakers and advocates think about the role of water, too: In a 2024 paper
David pointed out three main shifts in water politics since the beginning of the crisis
awareness of the importance of water policy has reached a level not seen since the 1970s
when the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act passed
there’s a greater focus on water access and affordability
politicians have paid greater attention to the racial dynamics of water policies
“People can conceptualize water issues as issues of structural racism more easily because of what happened,” David said
the study of the impacts of the crisis will be never-ending.”
In response to the influx of researchers hoping to work with Flint residents, Flint community members formed coalitions like the Healthy Flint Research Coordinating Center and Community Based Organization Partners to promote ethical
“There’s a long history in Flint of community-based
participatory research that goes back decades
but that kind of approach…was really invigorated by the crisis,” Pauli said
“There are so many aspects to what happened here,” Pauli continued
and there are still opportunities for scientists to document the far-reaching impact of the crisis
There are “so many effects that the crisis has had
“the study of the impacts of the crisis will be never-ending.”
