They promise convenience and a cleaner clean—but those so-called flushable wipes might be wreaking havoc on your plumbing, the environment, and your wallet.
Despite what the label says, many don’t break down like toilet paper—and cities everywhere are footing the bill.
Consumer Reports shows us what’s really going down the drain—and how to avoid a costly mess at home.
It might seem harmless to flush a flushable wipe down the toilet. After all, flushable is in the name!
But many of the wipes don’t break down like toilet paper. Instead, they can end up stuck in pipes, creating massive, messy clumps of congealed grease, fat, and—you guessed it—wipes.
They’re clogging pipes and sewers, costing cities and homeowners millions to remove.
Some laws in the U.S. now set standards for labeling non-flushable wipes as “Do Not Flush.”
An industry trade group maintains that flushable wipes are safe to flush, blaming clogs on non-flushable wipes and other items.
Testing inside Consumer Reports’ labs reveals why flushing wipes, even if they’re labeled “flushable,” can cause plumbing problems.
Testers found that flushable wipes don’t fully disintegrate. And on top of the damage they cause, they pose risks to our water supply and marine life.
Check out our weekly newsletter compiled by Consumer Investigative Reporter Tiffany Salameh.
So, what can you do about it? First, do the obvious: skip flushing wipes and toss them in the trash or stick to toilet paper.
In recent tests, CR found that not all toilet paper breaks down at the same rate. The two worst dissolving toilet papers took roughly 15 times longer to break down than the best. Charmin Ultra Soft and Quilted Northern Ultra Plush were the slowest to break down.
Amazon Basics bath tissue and Angel Soft did the best in the test. An even more eco-friendly, plumbing-safe alternative: easy-to-install bidet seats, which became popular during the pandemic.
They replace your existing toilet seat, use your toilet’s water supply line, and some plug into a nearby outlet. Most come standard with an adjustable nozzle, a seat heater, and warm water.
Whether it’s a quick-dissolving toilet paper or a bidet seat, both are better for your pipes and the planet than flushing wipes. Because potty humor is funny, clogged pipes aren’t.
If you still want to use wipes and promise not to flush them, Amazon Basics Flushable Wipes were Consumer Reports editors’ pick.

focusing on the JN.1 variant that rose to prominence across the United States from late 2023 to mid-2024
Conducted by researchers at the CDC and partner organizations
this retrospective analysis used wastewater samples collected from over 130 locations in 32 U.S
jurisdictions to estimate variant prevalence from November 2023 to July 2024
The study underscores how Aquascope improves upon previous systems by enabling faster
and more reproducible analysis of viral sequences
The research underscores wastewater surveillance as a cost-effective complement to clinical testing
capable of capturing infections that otherwise go unrecorded
especially among asymptomatic or untested individuals
Wastewater surveillance has matured into a critical pillar of pandemic response
the CDC’s National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS) has evolved to detect viral RNA from SARS-CoV-2 across thousands of U.S
Aquascope now marks a significant upgrade in the genomic arm of NWSS
replacing the older C-WAP system with a more robust and user-friendly solution
Using 3,377 wastewater samples collected across 130 sites in 32 U.S
the team applied Aquascope to sequence data processed under consistent laboratory protocols
The result: a clear timeline showing how JN.1 was first detected in mid-November 2023
The wastewater surveillance trends closely aligned with clinical sequencing data
reinforcing both the reliability of Aquascope and the broader National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS) framework
the JN.1 variant rapidly became the predominant lineage within a matter of weeks
sublineages such as JN.1.7 and JN.1.11.1 emerged and maintained a consistent presence throughout the monitoring period
other lineages like KP.2 and KP.3 also appeared and exhibited varying levels of prevalence
highlighting the dynamic nature of SARS-CoV-2 variant circulation as captured through wastewater analysis
While Aquascope was designed for SARS-CoV-2
its architecture supports the integration of other pathogen barcoding libraries
enabling broader public health applications
Using Freyja’s deconvolution algorithm
Aquascope could one day quantify pathogens like influenza
or novel zoonotic viruses from mixed wastewater samples
Aquascope faces several implementation challenges
The pipeline’s computational intensity necessitates high-performance computing resources
which may pose a barrier for smaller laboratories with limited infrastructure
the CDC is working to integrate Aquascope into a more scalable platform that will be accessible to public health partners nationwide
while the current system depends on pre-characterized SARS-CoV-2 lineage barcodes
future updates aim to enhance its capacity to detect previously uncharacterized or novel variants
broadening its utility for emerging pathogen surveillance
For epidemiologists and global health professionals
these findings reinforce the value of investing in genomic wastewater surveillance
As global pathogens evolve with increasing speed and stealth
systems like NWSS—now supercharged by Aquascope—provide early warning signals for variant emergence
This capability is crucial for shaping timely public health responses
and allocating healthcare resources effectively
By harnessing wastewater as a window into population health
noninvasive tool for detecting outbreaks before they hit clinical radar

The Hanover Borough Water Department will be flushing all fire hydrants and dead-end lines on the water system
Hydrant flushing is planned for all public fire hydrants and dead-end lines from Monday
Residents are asked to not draw water while flushing is taking place in the immediate vicinity of a home
and that water may be discolored during the flushing
Hanover's Department of Water Resources performs hydrant flushing biannually to remove sediment and rust deposits that may occur inside the pipes
as well as ensure hydrants are in working order for emergency services
"Flushing the entire system at one time is the most efficient cleaning method to conserve water," the borough said in the release

Grace is back, and the Mets have been continually good
which is definitely emotionally confusing in a certain way
It’s not like they haven’t had their fair share of injuries
Next, Grace delves into this year’s Jackie Robinson Day conundrum. The recent rush by the current administration to erase anything they consider “DEI” (read: not about a straight white guy) took Jackie Robinson down with it. And though they eventually put it back, the league and the Dodger organization made no comments about it and the Dodgers visited the White House
How can a league celebrate the life of a man who’s very essence of why he’s important was just (attemptedly) annihilated by the most powerful politician in the country

Days after India suspended the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan in wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, the government has now initiated work to increase reservoir storage capacities at two hydroelectric projects in Kashmir, as per an NDTV report citing sources. Also read | Can India really stop Indus water from flowing into Pakistan?
the government is also likely to accelerate construction of six stalled projects in the region – a 1,856 MW project in Sawalkot
the Kirthai I and I facilities that will generate a combined 1,320 MW
Jammu and Kashmir could generate up to 10,000 MW of electricity
and there could be more water for irrigation and domestic consumption in the plains
This move assumes great significance because if the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) were still operational
India would have had to give Pakistan six months’ notice before starting construction
during which time Islamabad would have mounted multiple legal challenges to delay or cancel the projects
removing of sediment – was also carried out at the Salal and Baglihar projects by the state-run National Hydroelectric Power Corporation last week
The flushing of the reservoirs was key for the same reason; India had not been able to clean them since they were built in 1987 and 2009 as it had been prohibited by the IWT
Flushing had been banned as downstream countries
may face flooding and destruction of property from the force of the released water
sources told Reuters that finally being able to carry out the flushing exercise would “help in more efficient power generation and prevent damage to the turbines”
It was pointed out that the 690 MW Salal and the 900 MW Baglihar plants had been operating well below capacity
and their ministry officials – have already taken place
including initiating of new projects along the Chenab (allotted to India under the IWT) and Jhelum (to Pakistan) rivers and reviving the Wular Lake
India suspended the IWT with Pakistan on April 24
vowing not one drop of water would cross the border
The IWT is a critical agreement for Pak; it divides the Indus River and its five major tributaries between India and itself
and supplies nearly 80 per cent of that country’s farms
threatened legal action as it denied any role in the Pahalgam attack
“Any attempt to stop or divert water belonging to Pakistan will be treated as ‘an act of war’.”

JT's favorite drill will help you hit pure irons
Welcome to Play Smart
a regular GOLF.com game-improvement column that will help you become a smarter
If you want to make more birdies, you’ve got to hit it close with your short irons and wedges
It’s no surprise that when you look at PGA Tour stats
you’ll see a strong correlation between SG: Approach the Green and Birdie Average
Take Justin Thomas, for example. He ranks eighth on Tour this season in SG: Approach at .852 and second on Tour with a Birdie Average of 4.8 per round. Making birdies is all about knocking it close.
Knocking it stiff with the short clubs is all about controlling the club path and having solid clubface control. For more on the former, we can take learn a lot from Thomas’ favorite ball-striking drill.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Zach Bankuti (@zachbankutipga)
Having a repeatable club path is crucial if you want to strike the ball with any sort of consistency
you can see the direction the clubhead is moving at impact relative to the target line
it’s important that he’s swinging a little bit out to in
it also works well with other matchups he has working in the swing
“My tendency is to get from the inside,” Thomas says
so swinging from the inside is not good.”
In an effort to groove that outside-in club path
Thomas relies on what he calls his favorite drill
The setup for this drill is simple and only requires three balls
He sets the first ball up in his typical ball position
Then he lines the second ball up a few inches behind the first ball and a few inches inside his target line
The third ball he places a few inches in front of the first ball and a few inches outside the target line
All he’s trying to do is swing and hit the first ball without striking either of the other two balls
I just have to miss it,” Thomas says
that means I’m swinging far enough left.”
Thomas has a great physical barrier to keep him from swinging too far from the inside
And the beauty of it is that if he ever gets too far outside
all he has to do is mirror the position of the balls to promote an inside-out path

(WMBF) - A tactic aimed at keeping Ocean Boulevard moving is returning this summer
The Myrtle Beach Police Department announced in a Facebook post that the Summer Emergency Vehicle Access Plan has been reactivated and is in effect for the 2025 season
the northbound lane of Ocean Boulevard from 9th Avenue North to 16th Avenue North closes every Friday and Saturday night from 4 p.m
All traffic flows southbound during this time
and the section between 8th and 9th Avenue North closes in both directions
creating a dedicated lane for emergency vehicles
“This initiative focuses on three key goals: improving response times for our first responders
and allowing officers to proactively address any concerns throughout the area,” MBPD stated
This strategy is also commonly referred to as “flushing.”
MBPD said that secondary streets and parking lots remain open during the Summer Emergency Vehicle Access Plan hours
CASPER – Anglers and outdoor enthusiasts should prepare for rising water levels in the North Platte River as a 10-day flushing flow operation begins Monday
the Wyoming Game and Fish Department announced
the Bureau of Reclamation will release additional water from Gray Reef Reservoir to improve fish spawning habitat and increase invertebrate populations that support trout in the North Platte River
the flow from Gray Reef Reservoir will rise from 500 cubic feet per second to 4,000 cfs between 3 and 7 a.m
before gradually returning to 500 cfs by 10 a.m
The cycle will repeat daily through March 26
after which flows will stabilize at approximately 500 cfs
“Research shows these flushing flows are essential for sustaining wild trout populations,” said Matt Hahn
fisheries supervisor for the Casper region
trout populations often fell below 400 per mile
the population averages more than 3,500 trout per mile.”
Game and Fish urges anglers and recreationists to be cautious during the flushing flow period
especially as the operation will extend through a weekend
Areas typically safe for wading at 500 cfs may become hazardous at 4,000 cfs
The flushing flow is scheduled March 17 to 26 to maximize benefits for spawning rainbow trout

PARKERSBURG — The Parkersburg Utility Board’s water division will flush water lines this weekend in the city and surrounding service areas
today and continue around the clock until the work is completed
Flushing will begin on 19th Street and move north on Dudley Avenue and west to the Ohio River
a second crew will begin flushing on 19th Street moving east of Dudley Avenue and south toward the Little Kanawha River
relief crews should start in the area of City Park and move across the Little Kanawha River to South Parkersburg
Work will continue moving south toward Pettyville
“Flushing of the water lines is done to remove the buildup of iron and manganese oxides from the lines and to inspect the operation of the fire hydrants in the water distribution system,” PUB Manager Eric Bennett said
“Water line flushing helps to maintain the quality of water provided to the customers of Parkersburg’s water system.”
Some residents may experience a temporary discoloration of their water while the work is taking place
“It is likely that some brown-colored water will enter house connections if water is used at the same time that the flushing is being done in the area,” Bennett said
Bennett added it is recommended laundry not be done when the flushing is being done in the area
it should be rewashed with a product formulated for iron stain removal such as Iron Out or Red Out
Customers who experience discolored water are advised to turn on the cold water and allow it to run until the water clears
It is recommended to not use hot water until the water is running clear

Here are three things I’m thinking about today…
Our first trade war victims are getting flushed out
We don’t have to look far to see the first one
This got clobbered after OPEC decided to increase production
Those extra barrels will now hit the market just as demand is set to go down
dismayed frackers are starting to reconsider their drilling plans because they anticipate demand for their product to weaken—in part as a result of Trump’s erratic shifts on trade.”
Let’s check in on how Trump’s making the American oil industry “great again”
US energy firms are getting slaughtered alongside the oil price
The other week I said the US could have low gasoline prices or a roaring oil industry
he’s never been one to let the facts get in the way of the story
All this is a good thing for the rest of us
Lower oil prices go straight to consumers as extra dollars
That should bolster the outlook for the share market over the year
A flare up in the Middle East could reverse the oil price quick smart
Reliance Worldwide (RWC) is a construction supplies company on the ASX
48% of their material is sourced from outside America
Tariffs are going to cost them at least $25-30 million in restructuring and expenses
They’re now scrambling to source their inventory from anywhere but China
“A full year trading outlook for FY25 was provided in RWC’s interim earnings announcement released on 18 February 2025
economic conditions in the US have deteriorated
due mainly to the uncertainty surrounding the introduction of higher tariffs between the US and its trading partners
“This has contributed to declining consumer confidence and reduced demand.”
Watch the stock to see how much it declines
I’m guessing most of this was the market jumping ship once it became likely Trump would get in
it’s one thing to expect a 10-20% tariff on Chinese imports
thanks to high mortgage rates and expensive prices
It will likely grind along for a long while now
There are a lot of traps like this out there now
…This chart from Firetrail on the ASX outlook
“Research from Goldman Sachs shows that to hit FY 2025 consensus earnings
the average ASX 200 Industrial would need to deliver its strongest second half earnings skew in two decades
“This suggests the market could see a wave of earnings cuts in the upcoming “confession season” ahead of August results.”
Point being: make sure you know your stock
or you could get whacked if they disappoint
all this is more applicable to the Top 200
There is still plenty of opportunity in the small sector of the market
Here’s shrewd fund manager Matthew Kidman appearing in the Australian Financial Review today…
“So we’ve started to churn some of these large caps out over the past few weeks
which had served us well defensively … but now we’re thinking it’s better to get back on the bike we ride normally and take on more risk.”

With Trumps policies causing an exodus from the US dollar
the Australian dollar is starting to look promising for more upside
The recent collapse in the Australian dollar saw it plummet into a major buy zone between 58-62 cents
The recovery has been swift as the US dollar turned down sharply during the tariff tantrum
If the Aussie can hold these levels until the end of this month that will confirm a monthly buy pivot from a major buy zone
That could increase the odds of more upside ahead for the Aussie dollar in coming months

There have been three major changes to the way the resource sector works in the last century

May 05 : Two weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack
India has significantly reduced water flow to Pakistan by suspending regular protocols under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and initiating reservoir maintenance activities at key hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir
curtailed the Chenab River’s water flow to Pakistan
revoked SAARC visa exemptions for Pakistani nationals
and ordered their departure within 48 hours
Diplomatic ties were further scaled back with the mutual expulsion of defence staff
marking a significant shift in India’s policy toward Pakistan
Official sources familiar with the development informed the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the government has initiated reservoir flushing operations at the Baglihar and Salal dams on the Chenab River
previously conducted with prior notice to Pakistan under treaty norms
were carried out without any communication this time
the decision not to notify Pakistan stems from the suspension of the IWT mechanism following the Pahalgam attack that left 26 dead
The sluice gates at Baglihar and Salal dams were opened initially to flush sediment and later closed
temporarily holding back a significant volume of water that would otherwise flow into Pakistan’s Punjab province
Officials estimate that the downstream water flow has been reduced by nearly 90 per cent
The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC)
said the maintenance work was aimed at increasing reservoir capacity and improving power generation
Both projects are classified as run-of-the-river schemes but require periodic sediment removal to maintain operational efficiency
The current maintenance includes near-emptying reservoirs and operating adjustable spillway gates
India has also indicated that similar flushing work will be carried out at the Kishanganga hydroelectric project on the Jhelum River
The Kishanganga project has been at the centre of long-standing disputes between the two countries
India’s recent actions signal a policy shift towards using its full entitlement of waters under the treaty without the usual bilateral engagement
India has expedited work on multiple hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir
These projects are expected to add over 3,000 megawatts of capacity by 2027-28
The government described the current steps as part of a broader reassessment of India’s approach to water-sharing with Pakistan
prioritising national interests and security concerns over treaty obligations

John Liu will back a plan that brings billionaire Mets owner Steve Cohen’s proposal for a casino near Citi Field closer to reality
Liu announced Sunday he’d introduce state Senate legislation to reclassify the 50 acres of asphalt parking lots around the Mets ballpark as commercial property instead of parkland – a move that would allow for developments like Metropolitan Park, Cohen’s $8 billion proposal for a sprawling casino and entertainment complex
have pledged to build the Flushing Skypark – a High Line-inspired pedestrian and bicycle bridge that would span Flushing Creek
connecting downtown Flushing and Willets Point
“I understand that Flushing Skypark will not be easy to achieve
it would be the Metropolitan Park team,” Liu said at a press conference
Cohen and Hard Rock have agreed to secure all the necessary public and private funding and obtain regulatory approvals to build the Skypark
Under a legally binding contract with the nonprofit Waterfront Alliance
the developers must instead pay $100 million for infrastructure improvements to Flushing Meadows Corona Park — delivered in $10 million annual installments over a decade
“As an organization based in Willets Point
we shared the community’s concerns around connectivity
and recognized that the Skypark would be a great way to bring Queens together,” Cohen said in a statement
“Metropolitan Park is committed to working to make Flushing Skypark a reality.”
Queens Borough President Donovan Richards also backed the plan on Sunday
calling it a “grand slam for Northwest Queens” that would bring 23,000 union jobs and long-overdue investment to historically underserved neighborhoods like Corona and Flushing
While Liu’s support is a key political milestone for the Citi Field casino plan
the proposal still faces notable opposition
a chunk of the Metropolitan Park development would overlap with the senator’s jurisdiction
Jessica Ramos – who is running for New York City mayor and whose district includes the ballpark – has voiced opposition to the plan
the lawmaker's unwillingness to sponsor legislation that would allow for the parkland to be developed commercially meant that the ambitious project was stuck in limbo
“My position has not changed," Ramos said in a statement provided by her office
"I cannot support a casino in Corona and am a definitive no on any alienation bill that goes against my neighbors’ wishes.”
The state Gaming Facility Location Board, which oversees the casino siting process, will award three downstate licenses by the end of 2025.

According to the 2021 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure
there are 2.2 million miles of underground water pipes in the United States
These pipes and the associated network of storage tanks and reservoirs of the distribution system contain billions of gallons of finished water at any given time
can compromise the water quality in large sections of this distribution system water storage
Accidental or intentional contamination events can also render large volumes of water unusable within the distribution system
Flushing contaminated water out of a drinking water distribution system using an existing network of fire hydrants is considered the most probable first action in response to a drinking water system contamination incident
The existing fire hydrants will have an important role in removing (flushing) contaminated water from the distribution piping
The primary purpose of flushing will be to keep the contaminated water from reaching consumers
but consideration should also be given to where this flushed water will be discharged and what impact it will have on human health and the environment
If the hydrant is close to a sanitary sewer manhole or drain
the flushed water can be directed to the wastewater treatment plant
if the flushed water will be discharged to a storm water drain or swale it may be beneficial and cost effective to treat the water as it is discharged from the hydrants before reaching the environment
EPA has performed experiments designed to determine the efficacy of removing contaminated water from the water distribution system by flushing the water using hydrant flushing devices
researchers also tested the ability of a custom-made chlorination diffuser (device used to reduce pressure and discharge flow from a fire hydrant) to add chlorine to the water discharged from the fire hydrant and disinfect biologically contaminated water before it was released to the environment
Several operational best practices were identified by these experiments
hydrant flushing under the right operating conditions was found to be effective at removing contaminated water from a water distribution system
the hydrant diffuser was able to add chlorine to water discharged from the fire hydrant

(WILX) - The annual Spring 2025 Hydrant Flushing Program from the City of Jackson’s Department of Public Works (DPW) will start Monday
This activity is happening all over the City of Jackson and in bordering areas of Summit
Flushing will take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m
Flushing is necessary to maintain the quality of the City’s water system
such as washing iron and sediment out of water mains
the sediment does not affect water quality but can cause water to become discolored
and discoloration often disappears within a short time
Residents are advised not to wash clothing while lines are being flushed in or around their neighborhoods due to the discolored water
Residents may experience low water pressure for a short time when flushing is happening in the area
Because there will be temporary impacts to water service
the City urges residents to be aware of when flushing is happening in their area so they are not alarmed
Questions about hydrant flushing should be directed to the “Report a Concern” feature on the City’s website or by calling the DPW at 517-788-4170
