we'll talk about urban tree canopy in the “The Forest City.”
It’s a nickname Cleveland has worn for over a century—emblazoned on buildings and rooted in the city’s identity
that name painted a vivid picture: a thriving urban forest with over 200,000 trees across Cleveland’s many neighborhoods
the Cleveland Tree Coalition set an ambitious goal: increase the city’s tree canopy from just 19% to 30% by the year 2040
so are the benefits they bring: cleaner air and water
higher property values and even better physical and mental health
Cleveland now lags behind other cities in the region
That’s why we’re joined today by Holden Forests & Gardens
one of the community partners working to turn this trend around
Just in time for Arbor Day, they’re wrapping up their People for Trees campaign
a five-year effort that’s seen 15,000 new trees planted across the city

FOREST CITY — The pieces leftover from a state tournament run in 2023 didn’t exactly fall into place
The West Marshall girls’ basketball program had to replace its 33-year Hall of Fame head coach in Fred Zeller and an NCAA Division I recruit in Katy Reyerson after its 2023 campaign
West Marshall went on the road and knocked off No
in Saturday’s Class 3A Region 3 championship game to get back to the Iowa High School Girls State Basketball Tournament for the third time in the last six years
It’s the first trip for head coach Cody Hackett
who in his second season assembled a staff and a squad that accepted their roles and ran with them
The Trojans (19-5) didn’t play a perfect ballgame and they’ll tell you the same
but they beat the team they had to in order to secure the school’s 12th state tournament berth
“There’s some moments this year where the girls probably questioned what their role was and sometimes I probably don’t do a very good job of explaning that,” Hacket said
“so there’s been some times of frustration
“I’m extremely proud of how hard they worked day-in and day-out
This is something we wanted since last year
it’s surreal and we got here and we’re going to state.”
Tthe Trojans traveled two hours north to face the top team from the Top of Iowa Conference
Forest City (23-2) had lost only once all season — to 4A No
9 Waverly-Shell Rock — and the Indians were rarely threatened on their home court
where they were 10-0 before Saturday’s regional final
when Forest City’s frantic scramble to get one last tying 3-point attempt off failed
“We got down at times throughout the game and you deal with adversity and at the end of the game
we scored more points than they did,” Hackett said
“I give Forest City credit for playing extremely hard
they got us a little rattled there at the end
but fortunately we had a couple timeouts left that we could calm the girls down.”
Forest City head coach Matt Erpelding thought that was the difference in the game
Everytime his team felt it had turned the momentum in front of a raucous hometown crowd packed into the bleachers
they came out of the timeouts and matched our runs
and that can’t happen on your home court,” Erpelding said
“That’s something we were stressing forever
They just kept battling and battling and we came up a little short
but unfortunately West Marshall is celebrating and not us.”
West Marshall led by as six points in the first half
but the lead at intermission was one — 21-20
The Trojans had 14 turnovers to that point and their leading scorer
Fellow senior Halle Jones had the hot hand
Jones made three of her career-high four 3-pointers in the first half
scoring 11 points to help West Marshall hold a slim lead at the break
“Going into the game I knew my teammates had confidence in me
my coaches have confidence in me and I had confidence in myself,” Jones said
“What we did tonight — it was crazy
I can’t believe we’re going to state.”
A furious Forest City surge to start the second half put those plans on hold
The Indians used an 8-0 run to take their first lead since scoring the first basket of the game
going in front 28-23 with 5:33 left in the third quarter
Hackett took a timeout and the Trojans composed themselves
retailiating with a 10-0 push powered by back-to-back 3-pointers by Jones and Borgos
West Marshall answered every challenge from the Indians despite turnover problems
countering with a locked-in defensive effort that forced Forest City to settle for too many 3-point attempts to remain efficient
The back-and-forth battle persisted until the Trojans opened the gap in the fourth
scoring six-straight for a 49-42 lead with 41 seconds left
Forest City found its shooting touch in the clutch
Colette Loges sank her first 3-pointer since that opening salvo and Lexi Isebrand added a deep trey to make it 50-48 with 11.1 seconds showing
West Marshall turned Forest City’s final 11 seconds into five
and the Indians were denied their second-straight trip to state
the Trojans’ new puzzle had taken form
“They both were like insane experiences
but obviously being my senior year has a huge impact and we really
really wanted this and I think that’s what energized us to do so good tonight,” said Zahnd
who led the Trojans with 18 points and 10 rebounds
Borgos ended with 12 points — all in the second half — and relished this last trip to state with a couple years of perspective under her belt
“You only get this team once and it’s bittersweet because this is our last ride
but we’re going to state and that’s the end goal in everyone’s book,” she said
We’ve been playing since third grade and we all stuck on different pants but we’re here today
Looking back those moments are bittersweet
but now we’re going to state together one last time it’s so amazing.”
while fellow juniors Shelby Johnston and Riley Randall contributed four and three points
Freshman reserve Kinley Johnston had two boards and one blocked shot
Senior starters Avery Evertsen and Natalie Nichols didn’t score either
but that wasn’t necessarily their piece in this particular puzzle
“I think everyone on the team knows their role,” said Zahnd
They know they’re in there for a reason and they will play their part and I think everybody knows that.”
the Indians’ second-leading scorer and primary post player
West Marshall will have all week to prepare for the state tournament after pulling off the biggest upset of the regional round
8 seed and will face top-seeded Mount Vernon (23-1) in the 3A opener Monday
“As long as we all know our roles and we’re playing together like we are now
we’re unstoppable,” Borgos said
WEST MARSHALL (19-5) — Bella Borgos 3 4-6 12
FOREST CITY (23-2) — Colette Loges 6 2-2 17
3-Point Goals–West Marshall 7 (Jones 4
WAUKEE — Marshalltown junior Carter Nunn charted a lifetime best in the 3,200-meter run to finish in second ..

The Forest City Council was given preliminary designs on the downtown setup for RAGBRAI coming to Forest City in July
RAGBRAI Downtown Map
The Forest City RAGBRAI Advisory Committee’s Shawn Keeper explained that the event will stretch from the Mansion Museum south to Waldorf University and that the committee was looking to get insurance to cover the event
Keeper stressed that the committee was not going before the board to take any street closure action
The map that was provided to the council showed that the intention was to get food vendors
and restaurants an opportunity to capitalize on the thousands of RAGBRAI riders and support staff to patronize them
Councilman Dan Davis expressed concern about some businesses like Athletico and the Daily Grind being completely blocked off
Councilman Tony Mikes was concerned that businesses in the city who depend on daily or weekly customer traffic
may lose that opportunity because of the way that access may be deterred during the event
Mikes was the lone “no” vote on the initial plans which are going to be submitted for the insurance bid
The committee vowed to have further talks with the downtown Forest City business owners to get their approval on the proposed plans and street closures
a longstanding Forest City event centered on Winnebago is hitting the road this summer
bypassing the community where the legendary recreational vehicle manufacturer still makes many of its motorhomes
Winnebago Industries, on its website, announced that the more-than 50-year-old Camp Winnebago event
held at the Winnebago Rally Grounds each July
will be moving to yet-to-be announced sites
hosted by Winnebago owner groups around the country
but Winnebago vows the event eventually will return to Forest City
“Our goal is to immerse ourselves in their gatherings
and learn firsthand what they love most about coming together," Kelli Harms
"By partnering with these incredible groups
we’ll not only share a piece of our Forest City spirit but also gather valuable insights to enhance future rallies in Forest City,”
Harms said this year will offer the company a chance to “regroup.”
“Our commitment to having our annual rally in Forest City remains strong," she said
"We look forward to having this event again
We are preparing to come back with a renewed vision
and an even bigger impact for our owners.”
The expectation of gathering input from owners around the country is to make the annual rally “a destination for every Winnebago owner,” she said
Except in 2020, when it was called off because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the rally has hosted anywhere from 500 to 1,400 owners of Winnebago RV’s during a week in July that coincides with Forest City’s annual Puckerbrush Days celebration
But Forest City is not without a crowd of people coming. The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa will descend upon the town for an overnight stay July 22
a day before the traditional start of Camp Winnebago
While Forest City Mayor Ron Holland said the timing of RAGBRAI had no bearing on the decision not to host the RV rally this year
Harms did not provide a direct answer when asked if the logistics of having RAGBRAI and the rally so close together weighed in on the company’s decision
RAGBRAI "is exciting news for our community
bringing great opportunities but also unique challenges — especially as we had planned to host a rally at the same time," she said
"We are actively collaborating with Forest City to create an unforgettable event and look forward to showcasing the best of our town and region together.”
The rally grounds used for Camp Winnebago will now be available for the armada of campers and support vehicles that accompany RAGBRAI, according to Julianna Burkholder, executive director of the Forest City Chamber of Commerce & Visitor’s Center.
is confident that Camp Winnebago will return to Forest City
“The word they (Winnebago) used in their announcement is ‘pause,’” she said
She also said she can appreciate Winnebago’s strategy of going on the road and getting feedback from customers
“I think they will be back better and stronger than ever,” she said
He said the annual rally for owners was not only an opportunity for Winnebago to introduce new products to its customers but also a chance for owners to interact with factory employees and vendors
“They (owners) had a chance to visit directly with the company and venders to address any issues or questions they have,” said Holland
who worked for Winnebago as an engineer right out of college before starting a house-moving company
“It’s really one big happy family getting together,” he said of the rally
“It brings the community of owners together and also builds camaraderie with the people that build them.”
The move of the rally is not the first parting between the company and community. In 2021, Winnebago moved its headquarters from Forest City to Eden Prairie, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis where CEO Michael Happe lives.Kevin Baskins covers jobs and the economy for the Des Moines Register. A three-decade-old rumor is getting closer to becoming a reality
Forest City will stay in the Top of the Iowa Conference
KIOW’s Zarren Egesdal publicly broke the news that the North Central Conference had invited three Top of Iowa Conference schools
The North Central Conference Executive Board approved the invites during its September meeting
and Eagle Grove would’ve had active membership starting in the 2026-2027 school year
(Schools from biggest to smallest using ’23-’24 BEDS (Basic Educational Data Survey) numbers
All three schools brought the invite to a vote last night at their monthly school board meetings
and Forest City and Eagle Grove both voted unanimously in favor with the contingency that all schools vote to confirm
meaning Forest City and Eagle Grove will stay in place for now
Board president Troy Thompson clarified the timeline of the proposed move
stating that this change would take effect in the 2026-2027 school year
The Top of Iowa Conference updated its bylaws the last time schools considered making a change
The new bylaws mandated that schools give a one-year notice in the spring
forcing them to finish that school year and compete in one additional year before making a change
Activities director Chad Moore noted that on Monday night
which is now in its first season in the Iowa Star Conference
Rockford initially thought about leaving for the Iowa Star before the ’23-’24 school year but was forced to wait an entire school year
Moore responded that once they have a seat at the “NCC table,” conversations will be not only about athletics but also about education for the student-athletes

Edmonds and the shortest trip 14 miles to GHV
Forest City’s trip to tradition divison schools would be 53.4 miles
with the longest trip to Humboldt and Webster City at 67 miles and the shortest to Clear Lake at 24 miles if you include the 12-school proposed NCC
Forest City’s average trip would be 54 miles
with the longest and shortest trips still to St
Forest City and Eagle Grove leaving for the NCC isn’t a closed book
The executive board of the NCC will likely look to invite a different school to be the third willing to leap with Forest City and Eagle Grove
That school could come from the TIC or possibly other conferences
but as of the time this story was published

She left it all on the floor every night.”
The two teams traded runs back-and-forth the entire night

Anyone within the local grassroots scene should know about the NC Spartans organization and how much they’ve expanded throughout the years
they’ve integrated multiple new teams at each age level—including their Forest City squad
Director and Coach Steven Jones has done a terrific job of accumulating impactful players who fit the Spartans’ stylistic and off-court ideologies
Although they have nice depth and pieces who can step up
three guys largely set the tone for this group
Let’s look at what each guy brings to this group…
Various guys can dictate offensive play for this team
strong-bodied post player with a nice combination of touch
Hudson is comfortable producing in several types of roles
He regularly sets up around the elbows and understands how to work the two-man game as a screener (both rolling and popping)
Hudson is quite useful in dribble-handoff actions due to his wide frame and ability to absorb contact
and moves his feet well to contain opponents defensively
Hudson is also a capable post-up option around the basket
Nathan Walters is able to cause matchup problems with his versatility
He’s a sturdy wing who can reliably handle the ball
and apply scoring pressure in a variety of ways
Walters is bigger and more physically overwhelming than the majority of guards but too mobile for most forwards to contain
He creates well off the bounce and gets downhill with consistency
but can also knock down jumpers at a solid rate
Walters is able to defend with energy while actively securing rebounds and pushing the break in transition
Thomas Rouse is quite different than his teammates above
well-rounded guard with a wiry build and useful ability as a creator
Rouse is capable of getting downhill and finishing through contact or above the rim
but also knocks down jumpers at a respectable rate along the perimeter
He sees the floor well and sets up others at a solid rate
Rouse is a quality transition threat who can find success with or without the ball
Add in his presence as a defender and rebounder
and it’s easy to see all the ways Rouse impacts a game.
