The Vermilion County Conservation District
in collaboration with the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC)
is set to host an Illinois RiverWatch Workshop at the Forest Glen Preserve on Saturday
The event will take place at the Gannett Education Center and is part of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ (IDNR) ENTICE program
The workshop offers an opportunity for community members to become certified RiverWatch community scientists
gaining skills in monitoring water quality in local streams
Participants will learn to survey habitats and identify aquatic macroinvertebrates
These organisms are vital indicators of water quality and play a key role in assessing the health of freshwater ecosystems
with scholarships available for those for whom the fee may be a barrier
While the workshop primarily targets adults
children are welcome to attend with a registered adult (up to two children per adult)
RiverWatch workshops are part of a long-standing program established in 1995 by IDNR
NGRREC assumed stewardship of the program in 2006
RiverWatch has trained volunteers—known as “RiverWatchers”—to collect high-quality data that informs decisions on ecosystem restoration
The program also fosters public awareness and advocacy for Illinois’ freshwater resources
The ENTICE (Environment and Nature Training Institute for Conservation Education) program supports workshops like this by providing hands-on experiences that promote conservation education and stewardship

in Forest Glen is opening for business at noon Saturday
“We were trying to open last May,” said Will Thomas
who owns the shop along with his wife Danielle
who loves ice cream and encouraged her parents to open their own shop
The previous occupant of the storefront was a dog grooming business
and the transition from that to an eating establishment required extra work
including upgrades to the heating-air conditioning and electrical systems
they needed help navigating through permitting
electrical company and Illinois Plumbing Works made that possible
“They did an amazing job and helped us through this whole process.”
Thomas thanked the community for its patience along with its eagerness for an ice cream shop in their neighborhood
had lots of inquires about when the shop would be opening
At first the store will be offering only scoops of ice cream — around two dozen flavors — in cones or cups
but plans call for the eventual addition of fountain creations
adding that the community’s recommendations will play a role in the menu as it expands
The shop’s planned hours will be noon to 8 p.m
The hours may be tweaked after the opening
and the shop may be closed December through February
Opening day on April 5 will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Alderman Samantha Nugent (39th)
The shop is around the corner from the busy Forest Glen Playlot Park
a fact that the Thomas family expects will be good for business

“Nobody knows what’s going on and nobody will return emails or voice messages [to the commissary agency],” a retired Army officer who shops at the Forest Glen Annex commissary told Military Times
“The only information that I was able to ascertain was that the building had floor structural damage and that it would be closed until further notice
… I’m not sure if this is a trend with several commissaries.”
The Forest Glen Annex commissary is among at least two commissaries this year to have been shut down for months due to structural issues. Military Times recently reported on the closure of the commissary at Mitchel Field, New York
where customers are also having trouble getting answers about the timeline for reopening their store
Commissaries are designed to offer discounted groceries as a benefit for eligible service members
There are 28,316 eligible commissary shopper households within 20 miles of the Forest Glen commissary

CANYONVILLE — With its assorted history of problems
the Forest Glen Senior Residence in Canyonville can be a tough place to live
were living in a tent in Roseburg for more than three years before moving into Forest Glen in September
The couple and their bevy of pets — 10 cats and two dogs — pay $1,900 a month for a suite apartment
the couple worries they may soon be back on the streets after receiving an eviction notice last month
filed eviction notices in Douglas County Circuit Court on residents in nearly two dozen units
The evictions were dismissed by a judge due to a technicality
Benwell and the other residents who received notices
including many seniors on modest fixed incomes
said they fear another round is almost certainly on the way
“We’re waiting to hear if we can stay or not
The facility has also gone by other names over the years including the most recent Harmony Active Living
As with previous situations where residents faced uncertainty
including this past spring when the facility was at risk of closure
it remains unclear exactly what is happening
is headed by 80-year-old Clackamas developer Terry W
an individual who said he was a spokesperson for Emmert
discussed the current situation but declined to give his name
He blamed current problems on the previous management at the site
a Roseburg faith-based organization called Redemptive Ministries
“The other people didn’t do their job,” he said
“There’s people living there that haven’t paid anything for months
and the people that pay don’t want the people that don’t pay
The man also said Emmert was in the process of making major improvements at the site
including putting in new tile and spraying for bed bugs
Maybe we should focus on the positive,” he said
Portland attorney Scott Staab said he is representing people living in four units at Forest Glen who received eviction notices
He said the notices were dismissed in court because they were “defective” and “didn’t comply with the law.”
Staab also blamed the problems at Forest Glen on Redemptive Ministries
which managed the property this past spring
The agency defaulted on its lease and left behind “a mess” for Emmert Development Co.
“There was no documentation on who was living there or what promises were made to these folks,” he said
Staab also said Redemptive Ministries let people work at the facility instead of paying rent
and tried unsuccessfully to evict a slew of residents back in the spring
“Redemptive Ministries was running what seemed to be a pretty seedy operation
As for the most recent round of attempted evictions
Staab said he is concerned for the residents
“I don’t think a lot of these people have anywhere to go,” he said
Max Stafford the president of Redemptive Ministries
He said the agency did not default on its lease
denied any wrongdoing and said those pointing a finger at him are just looking for someone to blame
“None of that has merit,” he said of the allegations against him
“I never moved anyone in there nor ever evicted anyone
Sounds like they need a scapegoat…Emmert is absolutely who created this mess and also is wanting a scapegoat.”
is currently on hospice and is unable to speak
he hasn’t been involved with Forest Glen for quite some time
“I’ve been too ill for months to have any involvement down there,” he said
“I was only involved down there for a short while back in May
I am not up to date with what’s happening there at all
The recent eviction notices are the second time this year residents at the facility faced such a dilemma
Emmert notified all the tenants — 50 at the time — the building was going to be shuttered effective immediately due to financial issues
The situation was considered so dire State Representatives Christine Goodwin and Virgle Osborne issued a joint statement urging intervention by public health officials into the looming evictions
The two officials asked state agencies to “step in
assess the situation and take appropriate measures to protect residents and staff.”
we found a shocked staff and confused and fearful residents
The physical condition of the building is also very troubling and clearly in need of (significant) repair and maintenance,” the statement said
the mass eviction notices never materialized
and shortly after Stafford and Redemptive Ministries took over management of the facility
after an unpaid water bill surpassed $40,000
Canyonville City Council voted to shut off the building’s water
Emmert came up with the back due debt and crisis was averted
Canyonville Mayor Christine Morgan said now Emmert pays the water bill every month
The monthly bill generally ranges between $7,000 — $9,000
but can be higher because of water leaks in the building
Morgan also said there is the misconception Forest Glen is a care facility
Nor can it be a hotel under current zoning
that the water and sewer bills are paid and that the use of the building conforms to its zoning
“There are lots of concerns down there and there should be,” Morgan said
In the spring the building had deteriorated
While these problems appear to have been addressed
the conditions at the building remain substandard and now include the tumult of a potential closure
requiring residents to rely on their own electric heaters
Food service at the facility ceased months ago
forcing residents to figure out other ways to eat
On a visit last Friday there didn’t appear to be any staff at the site
Rooms that had been used as offices were empty
with furniture and other items on the ground
Two vending machines in the front lobby were empty and unplugged
Two American flags stood next to a shelving unit filled with puzzles
A large yellow dumpster sat near the entrance with old mattresses
Resident Rhonda Witt said work at the site stopped abruptly Friday
They said they weren’t getting paid,” she said
Witt lived in a van for two years before securing a room at Forest Glen in April
Witt had signed a lease with Redemptive Ministries for the room
but when Witt asked for a copy of it so she could get a loan for a car
“As long as I pay my rent I’m staying,” she said
“I know what it’s like to be in the cold.”
has been in the building for just under a year
She pays $525 a month for a small unit she shares with her two miniature dogs
The central heat doesn’t work so she has her own heater
She put a padlock on her door because the pre-existing lock didn’t work
and I’m about to not have dinner,” she said Friday
Redemptive Ministries posted an eviction notice on her door
“I don’t really know what’s going on now,” she said
“I just hope they get someone in here who knows what they’re doing.”
Beall said she and Benwell plan to stay as long as possible
When they first moved in the rent included three meals a day
Then there were three weeks they had to go without hot water recently
like the Thanksgiving dinner the staff put together
“I’m worried because I don’t know what we’ll do if we have to leave

X"Desperate to keep up, I tried using a translation app, but the class had already moved on by the time it processed the words," writes Dr. David McGuire of his time helping to lead a Spanish immersion school in Indianapolis. (Getty Images)
and others thinking and writing about public education.“I do not speak Spanish.”
These were the first words I muttered to myself when I was told
that I had been tapped to become the interim assistant principal at Forest Glen Elementary
a Spanish immersion school in Indianapolis
I hadn’t taken a Spanish class since high school
I have taught at or led schools where at least 80% of the students looked like me
I got into this profession to serve these students because
I did not get my first Black male teacher until eighth grade and didn’t have another one until my junior year of high school
where a professor told our class that education is the civil rights issue of our generation
I could lean into challenging systemic inequities
I wanted to be a mirror through which my Black students could see themselves teaching and leading schools
I never imagined it would allow me to tap into the things that first inspired me to become an educator
Forest Glen Elementary School has almost 1,000 students in pre-K through sixth grade
Many of the students come from Spanish-speaking homes
I remember the first time I stepped into a Forest Glen classroom
eager to engage in the lesson and offer support and feedback
But I was completely lost within a minute as the teacher spoke to students in Spanish
but the class had already moved on by the time it processed the words
I realized then that I was experiencing what many families face when they arrive in the U.S
For the first time in my 14-year career in education
I tapped into the philosophy of being a servant leader — that is
tailoring my leadership to the school and students I was serving
I had to adjust and redefine what my role would look like
spending time with Spanish-speaking parents
and participating in our school’s Hispanic Festival
I learned much more than the basic Spanish phrases I came in with
The annual Hispanic Festival is one of the school’s biggest events
Each kindergarten through sixth grade class selects a country and creates a performance inspired by it
The event is held over four nights; each night
I learned a lot about the rich cultures at Forest Glen through the flags and projects displayed throughout the building
as well as the costumes and performances at the main event
Forest Glen is a school full of rich traditions
With the talented culture team at the school
we hosted a pumpkin patch in the fall and a “Mom Prom” in the spring
We gave away family gift baskets to students who had perfect attendance

I learned about myself as an educator and a leader
I realized that my students cared less about my rudimentary Spanish skills and more about my commitment to them
and gifts both during my time there and now after
I could see that I was making a difference and that the students appreciated my efforts
I also developed a strong rapport with the teachers in the building
who saw that I needed a place like Forest Glen at that moment in my career
I am forever grateful for the opportunity he provided for me and for the Forest Glen colleagues who embraced me
Students need teachers who look like them and share the same experiences
my time at Forest Glen showed me that authentic
empathetic leadership can transcend language and cultural differences
I had developed a newfound appreciation for the richness of what a Spanish immersion school could offer to students
regardless of their background and home language
My challenging yet rewarding year at Forest Glen made me more resilient and strengthened my skills in cross-cultural communication
it brought me closer to the leader I have always aspired to become

The Trump administration is speeding up environmental reviews of logging projects on more than half of the country’s national forests
including parts of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Wisconsin
A large part of the western Upper Peninsula
and several smaller areas in the eastern Upper Peninsula are also included
Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins issued an emergency designation April 4 on more than 112 million acres of national forest land
The move seeks to align with President Donald Trump’s order to boost logging and reduce reliance on foreign lumber
Rollins used authority established under the bipartisan infrastructure law to issue the emergency designation
and the Biden administration previously sought to increase logging to address wildfire threats due to climate change
The move allows the Forest Service within USDA to engage in faster permitting and roll back federal environmental regulations
CHEQUAMEGON-NICOLET NATIONAL Forest in northern Wisconsin
Ron Eckstein is the co-chair of the public lands and forestry work group for Wisconsin’s Green Fire
He said he doesn’t think existing federal regulations are too burdensome for loggers
“We can produce the timber we need to produce
We can protect against wildfire using the (National Environmental Policy Act) process and Endangered Species Act and still produce forest products
yet protecting all the other values of the national forests
Eckstein noted the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is already one of the top timber-producing national forests in the country
The forest sold about 125 million board feet in fiscal year 2024
The Forest Service sells an average of 3 billion board feet each year nationwide
the Trump administration aims to increase timber production 25% across the agency
A national strategy will be developed within the next month
“I am proud to follow the bold leadership of President Trump by empowering forest managers to reduce constraints and minimize the risks of fire
and disease so that we can strengthen American timber industry and further enrich our forests with the resources they need to thrive,” Rollins said in a statement
Former forest supervisor calls for transparency around at-risk lands
former supervisor of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest
said it’s unclear how the Forest Service determined lands at high risk for wildfires and infestations
“I would want to know what are the characteristics of that area and information that was used to declare that there is an emergency situation there — either threat from wildfire or threat from insect and disease or something else that affects human health and safety,” Strong said
noted one of the areas designated at risk is in northern Oconto County on the eastern side of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and appears to be associated with high-quality northern hardwood forests
He said such forests aren’t typically linked to wildfire threats
“It was an area that was impacted in part by the 2019 blowdown on national forest and other lands
There was a lot of salvage timber operations that also reduced heavy fuels that could have been dangerous if they hadn’t been removed,” Strong said
“But it didn’t affect that entire area.”
He added that the forests are made up of trees like maples and basswood that aren’t associated with insect or disease problems to his knowledge
most if not all areas are dominated by northern hardwood forests
He said there’s demand for high-quality timber from the industry
Logging advocates say move will reduce delays
executive director of the American Loggers Council
represents about 10,000 logging companies and about 50,000 employees nationwide in the timber industry
He said the memo and Trump’s order is a big step forward to reversing policy that has resulted in less forest management and unhealthy forests
“(Agencies are) not abandoning any requirements — legal requirements regarding protection and the Endangered Species Act and NEPA and other things — but things do need to be streamlined,” Dane said
“They’ve been delayed at the national forest level for years at a time.”
Rollins’ memo prevents groups from challenging logging proposals before the agency issues a decision on them
Environmental and conservation groups have frequently challenged and delayed projects seeking approval
Dane said mills have gone out of business due to unstable timber supplies
arguing many could handle additional capacity
“It has the potential to improve forest management on national forests
improve the health of the national forests
as well as create opportunities for the rural communities and jobs that depend on the national forests,” Dane said
The forestry and logging sector directly employs about 4,400 of the 57,000 workers in Wisconsin’s nearly $27 billion forest products industry
The Trump administration is seeking to use stewardship contracts or Good Neighbor Authority agreements to ramp up logging
The Department of Natural Resources has said it’s conducted just shy of 200 timber sales spanning 32,000 acres under an agreement with the agency in the past decade
As the Trump administration seeks to boost logging
reports state the Forest Service is planning to consolidate its nine regional offices into three
As many as 7,000 agency employees could be laid off under a reduction in force
“It’s inconsistent for the Trump administration to lay off or fire so many people in the National Forest System at the very same time declaring that there should be increased timber production,” Eckstein said
“It doesn’t seem to work out.”

Gajarsa is referring to this video released by MCPD:

Another person walks up and pulls out a weapon
A fourth person hangs back and acts as a lookout
I’ve got three little kids that I need to watch out for
and this is something that’s super concerning," Gajarsa said
He's asking more of his local authorities and leaders on the ongoing issue
"The police have been helpful in terms of engaging us and trying to say
you need cameras.' But none of that’s solved the problem," Gajarsa said
7News' Lianna Golden: I asked Montgomery County Police if they would consider putting a unit out here for extra patrols
Is that something you would be interested in
particularly at the nighttime hours when they’re coming through..
When these guys are coming straight to your front door and they have guns
to be able to respond in a timely matter to that so we can call them and actually have them come
He believes there are ways to help deter the criminals and says it's time to crack down in this area
and it’s pretty simple to kind of put license plate readers there to see everyone that’s coming through those entrances and exits," Gajarsa said
"It’s a hard solution to figure out what it is
but a police presence is definitely one of the things we need."
7News brought Gajarsa's concerns directly to MCPD

The planned opening of the Sugar Rae’s Ice Cream shop at 5281 N
has been delayed several months due to permit issues
but we already put so much into this place,” said Danielle Thomas
who will operating the business with her husband Will
“We are new at this (and) trying to remain positive.”
The previous occupant of the Forest Glen storefront was a dog grooming shop
and the conversion of the space to an eatery requires a building permit
A plat of survey is being sought for the site as part of the permit application process
Thomas said that she “thanks” the community for its patience and that while she had hoped to have the shop open this summer
it’s being designed as an all-year business and menu items other than ice cream are being considered
The store is being named after the owners’ daughter
“We are constantly getting her ice cream,” Thomas said
Rae would tell her parents that she wanted her own shop
and eventually mom and dad agreed to become first-time business owners
The shop is within walking distance of the Thomas home in neighboring Jefferson Park and located in the same mini-mall with one of their favorite eateries
It’s also around the corner from the busy Forest Glen Playlot Park

TRACK RADARSilver Spring woman's Christmas tree stolen out of her car; suspects caught on cameraby Lianna Golden
(7News) — The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) is investigating a string of car break-ins in Silver Spring
One woman in particular had special cargo stolen from her vehicle parked on Forest Glen Road
"The only thing I had in my car was a Christmas tree in a big box," Yolanda Phillips told 7News' Lianna Golden
Phillips is a longtime resident of Silver Spring
"I’ve lived here about 45 years," she said
Her week started abruptly with a phone call from a neighbor alerting her to the damage to her car
"It looks awful with all the jagged pieces in the window and the glass all on the sidewalk..
I just got it for my birthday in October as a gift from my children."
One of her neighbors caught the end of the heist on camera
"You can see them running with a Christmas tree
as a committed mother and grandmother herself
she has this question for the alleged thieves
I’d like to think they’re still young enough that they can feel something
and I hope they do feel that they’ve done the wrong thing," Phillips said
I’ll tell you I was very surprised," Phillips said

Forest entered a contest to write music for a poem
His nice ballad won first place and the others won honorable mentions

JLB Partners’ recently approved plan in Silver Spring
called for 390 apartments over commercial space
Moya Design Partners, Montgomery County Planning Board
The development plan approved in March, referred to as The Glen in some renderings, would have included an interior courtyard, solar panel installations to offset the planned removal of trees on site, and a parking garage with approximately 540 spaces, according to planning documents. Fifteen percent of the residential units would have been designated as moderately priced dwelling units
and a minimum of 25% would have been two-bedroom apartments
told the Washington Business Journal that the terms of the deal “didn’t work for JLB in today’s market,” but that the developer would be interested in picking up the project again if circumstances changed

responded to a request for comment from Multifamily Dive
Forest Glen Medical Center LLP is a named party in three administrative appeals, the latest filed on April 8, in the Montgomery County Circuit Court by the Forest Grove Citizens Association, a group of local residents that have opposed the redevelopment of 9801 Georgia Avenue on multiple grounds
These petitions ask the court to review the decision-making process of the Montgomery County Planning Board related to the plans for the site
is presently occupied by a number of medical office tenants
The property is located across the street from the Forest Glen Metro’s existing entrances and provides close access to the Capital Beltway highway surrounding Washington
The Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s plan to build a new Metro entrance on the site is set to proceed without the JLB Partners redevelopment
with construction expected to start in 2025
another apartment project just across the street is proceeding as planned
the $60 million redevelopment Silver Spring-based affordable housing firm Montgomery Housing Partnership will replace a previous community of 1950s garden-style apartments with 189 affordable units

Dexter McMullen recalled the onset of symptoms
It began innocuously with “a thumb moving” uncontrollably
gradually escalating to relentless aches that doctors struggled to diagnose
“You feel like a hypochondriac,” Dexter said
“You almost don’t want to ask for help because it’s not something you can see
It touches so much of our body and in every person it seems to come out differently
There’s no particular direct pattern for it.”
Dexter and his wife Bev discovered The Parkinson’s Centre (known as ‘The Park’) at Forest Glen nine months ago—a discovery they both describe as “life-changing.”
It’s Queensland’s first purpose-built allied health centre dedicated to Parkinson’s care
Its official opening was on April 11—appropriately World Parkinson’s Day.
Dexter detailed the exhausting journey Parkinson’s inflicted on both him and Bev.
Despite consistent exercise recommended by healthcare providers
Dexter found himself deteriorating and feeling worse
when his left leg failed to do what his brain told it to do
resulted in concussion and highlighted how debilitating Parkinson’s had become
How would that be for someone in their seventies or eighties
Bev described watching helplessly as Dexter battled symptoms without targeted support
unable to find specialised care – until an internet search led them to The Park
“At first there wasn’t a roadmap,” Dexter said
“Finally we found a roadmap and the roadmap led us here.”
Dexter and Bev discovered a holistic model of care
uniquely inclusive of both patients and their carer partners
Dexter said the centre provided comprehensive support—physical and cognitive therapy tailored precisely to everyday living needs
strength—there’s nothing they don’t address,” Dexter said
We didn’t find much compassion on the way here
emphasising the impact the centre has had on her as a carer
“Dexter has felt like this is his second home,” she said
“It’s made getting out of bed every day worthwhile
And it’s been life-changing for me as well.”
who lived with Parkinson’s and at one point was left with only eight cents in her account while desperately needing care
Rory described the heartbreaking memory of her reduced circumstances as Parkinson’s progressed
living with Parkinson’s for over twenty years,” Rory said
and you’ve got just eight cents in your account
Rory and Barbara announced the establishment of the Sunshine Coast Parkinson’s Support Fund
launching symbolically with eight cents in the account
The fund aims to ensure financial hardship never blocks essential care for Parkinson’s sufferers
“The Park is more than a clinic,” Barbara said
Parkinson’s tries to make your life very small
We work every day to help people live bigger
reflecting on the extraordinary support he had found at The Park
“There is a blessing in Parkinson’s,” he said
“It is a slow disease and it affects your partners
But by learning that if you fight hard and if you do the work
the quality of life becomes something else
