Government inspectors documented unsanitary conditions at several Boar's Head deli meat plants
not just the factory that was shut down last year after a deadly outbreak of listeria poisoning
Newly released reports from Boar's Head plants in New Castle
described multiple instances of meat and fat residue left on equipment and walls
insects and other problems dating back roughly six years
one inspector documented “general filth” in a room at the Indiana plant
Agriculture Department released the inspection records in response to Freedom of Information Act requests from The Associated Press and other news organizations
The problems documented at the three factories echo some of the violations found at the Jarratt
plant linked to the food poisoning outbreak
— Equipment “covered in meat scraps” in 2019
— “Dry crusted meat from the previous day's production” and “dark
— A doorway covered in “dried meat juices and grime” in 2021
— “Unidentified slime” and “an abundance of insects” in 2023
Boar's Head officials said in an email Monday that the violations documented in the three factories “do not meet our high standards.” The company's remaining plants continue to operate under normal USDA oversight
Florida-based company has marketed itself for decades as a premier provider of deli meats and cheeses
advertising “excellence that stands apart in every bite.”
Records from a fourth Boar’s Head plant in Holland
Boar's Head stopped making liverwurst and shuttered its Jarratt
plant in September after listeria poisoning tied to the product sickened more than 60 people in 19 states
Health officials in Maryland initially discovered listeria contamination in a package of unopened liverwurst
The company recalled more than 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat deli meat and poultry sold nationwide
About 2.6 million pounds was eventually recovered
according to the Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service
The conditions revealed at the other Boar's Head plants are “really concerning,” said Thomas Gremillion
director of food policy at the Consumer Federation of America
“It's reasonable for some people to decide they don't want to eat deli meat,” he said
they should have to earn consumers' trust.”
Boar’s Head faces multiple lawsuits connected to the outbreak
“This makes me extremely angry and sad,” said Garett Dorman
died in July after eating Boar’s Head liverwurst
and liverwurst was one of the few foods she would eat
according to court documents filed by Marler Clark
“I believe Boar’s Head needs to completely revamp their program at all of their facilities," Dorman said in an email
"Boar's Head needs to put the welfare of people as their highest priority.”
Rosa DeLauro have sharply criticized USDA officials for not taking stronger action against the company
despite documentation of repeated problems
The USDA inspector general is reviewing the agency's handling of the situation
Department of Justice is investigating whether criminal charges are warranted
“The new records released by FSIS should be considered by the DOJ
especially as they potentially point to a wider
systemic problem,” the lawmakers said in a statement
“These reports make clear that there is a culture of noncompliance of critical safety and sanitary protocols.”
USDA officials said “inadequate sanitation practices” at the Jarratt plant contributed to the outbreak
condensation and structural problem in the buildings were key factors
State inspectors working in partnership with USDA had documented mold
USDA officials have promised new measures to control listeria in plants that make ready-to-eat foods
more food safety reviews and stronger oversight of state inspectors who act on behalf of the agency
Boar's Head is hiring a “food safety culture manager,” according to Frank Yiannas
Food and Drug Administration who is now advising the company

FORREST CITY (KATV) — An inmate at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Forrest City has been sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison after he was convicted for an assault that left one dead
the Office of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas announced on November 21
Officials say that 41-year Montana native Raymond Tetzlaff was convicted by a federal jury on one count of assault causing serious body injury
Tetzlaff is currently serving a 216-month federal sentence for drug crimes from a 2017 case out of Montana
His 120-month sentence will begin once the drug case is completed
Tetzlaff has also been sentenced to 5 years of supervised release
This sentence represents the maximum amount of imprisonment under law that Tetzlaff could serve
“It is my sincere hope that today’s sentence will bring a level of comfort and peace to the victim’s family,” said Jonathan D
Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas
“Prisoners should be safe while serving their term of imprisonment
The significant sentence handed down by the judge should serve as a warning to all inmates that if you cause harm to a fellow prisoner
our office will work to hold you accountable
and the sentence is reflective of the defendant’s callous indifference to the loss of another man’s life.”
Tetzlaff was indicted by a federal grandy jury on Aug
in a two-count indictment that charged him with one count of manslaughter and one count of assault causing serious bodily injury
The jury reached a verdict of guilty on assault but did not reach a verdict on the manslaughter charge
The victim of the assault fractured his skull when he hit the floor and succumbed to his injuries three days later
Investigators said that Tetzlaff assaulted the victim over concerns for a missing contraband cell phone
Witnesses testified that Tetzlaff punched the victim when they were not paying attention
the victim was knocked unconscious and crashed to the floor
Witnesses also said the victim later had a seizure and fell from his top bunk onto the floor
The victim was taken to the hospital but never regained consciousness
Judge Moody cited Tetzlaff's lack of remorse as well as numerous previous incidents in which he had used violence in criminal activities as reasons for the sentencing
