I couldn’t have done it without that and I just told myself I’m not letting this opportunity go to waste and started sprinting.”   Ledecky on when she knew the record was in reach: “It felt good The first person I saw going nuts was Greg (Meehan) He was on the announcer's podium and was really waving before everyone else was and then everyone got into it around the 500 I know not to react or get too excited too early.”  USA Swimming National Team Managing Director on Ledecky’s accomplishment: “I’m filled with emotion from seeing her journey to the ups and downs of being a superstar and the pressure to do that every time she races from the expectations of those fans seeing her for the first time to see her now at 28 years old is beyond inspiring I’m just so proud of her on a personal level and I’m incredibly proud of her.”  Meehan on what witnessing this record means: “Those who have had any opportunity to interact with Katie from fans to officials to teammates to coaches It’s fun to sit back and see her be in that moment and celebrate that I am sure she is flooded with all of the feelings she has had from 2016 to now.”  Walsh’s world records: “That was crazy It’s so inspirational and pretty amazing to watch that it’s another level and it’s amazing to see.”  Men’s 800m Freestyle – FINAL   Finke on the difficulty of his schedule: “That was probably the hardest race of the week I was hoping to be a little bit faster; I was trying to be around 7:47 or so and I can’t be too disappointed with it but I was hoping to be a little faster.”  Finke on his training partner’s world record: “I can’t wait to give (Ledecky) a proper congratulations I was in the ready room listening to the announcers still saying she was under the world record pace at the 300 400 and then I think she fell off and then went back on it I came out and watched the rest of the race It was pretty remarkable what she was able to do.”  Finke on the dynamic with Ledecky: “It’s incredible to have her around not only as a training partner but to experience the kind of person she is She is one of the biggest leaders and role models I know I looked up to her when she won her 2012 gold medal Having someone like that around makes you want to be better.”  Women’s 100m Backstroke – FINAL   Smith on her race: “I kept telling myself not to spin (my arms) I can tell if I’m going to have a good 100 back because it will almost feel like I’m not working hard enough on the first 50 but I know that it means I’m not overworking it I was trying to remind myself to not overdo it Men’s 100m Backstroke – FINAL   Women’s 200m Breaststroke – FINAL   Walsh on her race: “To be 2:22 right now I really relied on Kate (Douglass) to help me pace myself through that I’m really happy I got to do that with her.”  Men’s 200m Breaststroke – FINAL   Women’s 100m Butterfly – FINAL   Walsh also earned a world record in prelims for her 55.09 swim.   Walsh on her second world record of the day: “To be honest with you I didn’t change any part of my race strategy going into tonight It was still going to be the goal to take 17 strokes on the way out hopefully one less stroke coming back home I have found that taking one less stroke has given me that extra energy so I just did the same exact thing tonight I was long in my turn and my finish as well which I’m kind of happy about because I can go faster I wouldn’t feel the confidence that I could go faster but definitely did not expect to drop that much in the race tonight It has been a trend for me at this meet to go faster at night – every race I was able to do that There's something that happens with finals but there’s just extra energy I find and I just continue off the momentum of the morning but I think I’ve learned how to handle that pressure and look at the race as another opportunity to execute and do the plan that I talk about every day with Todd (Desorbo) On breaking time barriers: “I need to set some new goals I knew I was going to be having fun out here I love swimming outside and getting to see my friends again It’s been a long NCAA season where you don't see everyone that is a pro and it has helped that I’m going really fast I think this bodes really well for everything to come this summer I definitely need to keep working and finding new motivation because I have surpassed so many barriers I talked about prior to the season I think that helps me see it more as an opportunity to execute I’m really happy with where I’m at I’m looking forward to getting back to Charlottesville It started on such a high note; this is going to be awesome.”   On how she spent the afternoon knowing she had to swim two finals this evening: “I’ve been going to the beach every day I’ve grown up by the ocean my whole life I find a lot of comfort and peace when I’m by the beach so I have been out there enjoying it every day I have gotten the best sleep of my life; I have been so happy here.”   On what she is taking away from this meet: “The overarching theme that a happy swimmer is a fast swimmer but at times it has been hard for me to do that so I want to carry that throughout the rest of the summer and look at every race as an opportunity.   Men’s 100m Butterfly – FINAL   Women’s 200m Individual Medley – FINAL   Walsh on her double: “My races were great I definitely felt like I really threw myself through a loop with only doing the 50 (breaststroke) yesterday and then having the double today That was something I felt like I had to overcome and I did and I’m really proud of myself.”  Tonight was the best night out of the three nights I think I executed my 100 back pretty well The key for me is not overdoing the first 50 (meters) and I think I’m getting better at executing it well.  Men’s 200m Individual Medley – FINAL   Casas on holding off Marchand: “That was good I remember looking and Hubert Kos was already coming off the wall ‘I’m the one that’s supposed to be out front.’ I just went to my legs on breaststroke I talked to Bob and he explained that training times are times I just need to focus on getting better.”  Casas on beating his training partners: “It’s cool It’s a different story when we are training 80% of the time I am out in the back unless it’s an all-out type of set where I can resurge again to the front we are in the thick of training and hitting that shift toward faster swimming and championship times.”  Women’s 50m Freestyle – FINAL   “I would say that I am not surprised that (G She hasn’t raced long course since the Olympics We didn’t train long course at all this season because I wanted everybody to have a mental break...as much as we put into it the Olympic year We've only been training in the long course for four weeks Being that we haven’t trained a ton of it and haven’t raced it in a long time This definitely wasn’t expected.”  Walsh manage her afternoon break after setting a world record in the morning: “Gretchen will be the first to say that a happy swimmer is a fast swimmer I think she was excited for the swim overall and it was a shock to her a little bit this morning Now that she has done it last year at Trials and has broken so many records over the last year She’s broken so many records over the last year and been in this situation so often that she is now becoming pretty good at internalizing it and moving on to the next race She’s obviously pretty special.”  Men’s 50m Freestyle – FINAL   3 – Quintin McCarty (Colorado Springs Full event replays and all race highlights are available on the USA Swimming Network.   May 03rd, 2025 News There are a couple of big scratches in the heats on the final day at Fort Lauderdale most notably #1 seed and World Record Holder Caeleb Dressel in the men’s 100 fly The three-time Olympian is still entered in the 50 free at the end of the session so we will see him in action but it appears that he’s focusing on the sprints here this week He dropped the 100 free on Day 2 before swimming the 50 fly yesterday and his scratch here was in the longer event he was entered in as well Torri Huske also scratched a second event in favor of the 50 free today dropping the 200 IM where she was the second seed behind Alex Walsh There were no scratches for the final heat of the women’s 800, but two for the men. in which he faces no competition) still not great are enough for french qualifications in June The W 4 x 200 FR-R has yet to post a sub 7:40 time A time of 1:56 in the W 200 FR no longer cuts the Kate Douglass Douglass went 2:22.60 in the event at the Westmont PSS back in March so we may see a faster swim out of Douglass tonight Alex Walsh was next up this morning She was actually out a touch faster than Douglass Leah Hayes who just finished her freshman season at Virginia which marks a new career best for the 19-year-old Hayes’ previous best of 2:28.42 was set back in May of 2023 Emma Weber rounded out the Virginia quartet this morning Carles Coll Marti continues to impress with his LC breaststroke this year Following his career best of 2:10.25 at the PSS in Sacramento last month his swim this morning was faster than the 2:13.22 he swam in prelims at the Sacramento PSS last month Coll Marti jumped out to an early lead this morning which was the fastest opening 100 in the field by well over a second Coll Marti will have a fight on his hands tonight, however, as Lyubomir Epitropov has been under 2:10 before. Epitropov was 2:13.43 this morning. Meanwhile, Denis Petrashov has been 2:10.19 and was 2:13.92 this morning Well…Gretchen Walsh certainly didn’t waste any time this morning The 22-year-old cracked her own World Record in the women’s 100 fly which Walsh set at the US Olympic Trials last summer and is the fastest time in the world this year which was only 0.61 seconds slower than the 24.93 she swam to win the 50 fly last night in finals Her 2nd 50 split was the only one under 31 seconds in the field this morning Walsh has gone faster in finals than in prelims in each of her two other events at this meet so it looks like we’ll need to be on “sub-55 watch” tonight in finals Carmel Swim Club’s Alex Shackell put up a strong swim this morning so we’ll see what she’s able to do tonight Swimming in her 2nd race of the morning, Lakeside Swim Team 17-year-old Charlotte Crush swam a 58.96 this morning the only swimmer in this field who could challenge Walsh tonight While that time doesn’t exactly jump off the page keep in mind that Huske is the reigning Olympic champion in the event and holds a career best of 55.52 That’s an excellent performance for Kharun coming in just off his career best of 50.45 which he set at the Olympics last summer in Paris Interestingly, Kharun and this morning’s 2nd place finisher, Bjoern Kammann had the same split on the opening 50 – 23.97 Pitt’s Julian Koch clocked a new career best of 52.28 Once again, we find the Virginia swimmers at the top of the women’s events. This time around, Leah Hayes led the way putting up an impressive prelims 200 IM of 2:11.12 Teammate Alex Walsh came in 2nd this morning with a 2:11.94 Both Hayes and Walsh have been well under 2:10 before so we’ll be looking for a great race tonight Joining that race tonight will be Regan Smith Smith holds a personal best of 2:08.48 and has been swimming quite well this week so she should be able to challenge to win this race tonight as well After qualifying 5th in the 100 fly, Jersey Wahoos 15-year-old Audrey Derivaux pulled off an impressive back-to-back double taking 6th in the IM this morning with a 2:14.74 That swam came in just a second off Derivaux’s personal best of 2:13.67 Kieran Smith led the field in the men’s 200 IM this morning with a 1:59.69 The race marks Smith’s first LC 200 IM of the 2024-2025 season getting him off to a great start in what has become an elite event for the 24-year-old he had the fastest backstroke split in the field Leon Marchand the reigning Olympic champion in the event Tonight’s race should wind up being a good race between Marchand and Smith Princeton’s Mitchell Schott came in 3rd with a 2:00.37 which is just a second off his career best splitting 27.93 on the final 50 of the race this morning Following her World Record performance in the 100 fly an hour ago, Gretchen Walsh clocked the top time in the field in the women’s 50 free as well Walsh’s time of 24.49 marks the 5th-fastest time in the world this year Teammate Kate Douglass came in 2nd with a 24.70 That time comes in just off Douglass’ season best of 24.62 which she swam at the Westmont Pro Swim Series back in March Douglass is the American Record holder in the event with her career best of 23.91 16-year-old Rylee Erisman swam a 25.00 this morning Andrej Barna was the only swimmer to go under 22 seconds in the men’s 50 free this morning downing his previous time of 21.89 from last year Barna set a new Serbian Record in the event with his performance this morning Michael Andrew came in 2nd this morning with a 22.03 Kos did a 52.24 pb at the Hungarian National 3 weeks ago 🙂 Does it really say the 200 IM final will wind up being a good race between Marchand and Smith Hubert Kos best time is 52.24 from Hungarian Champs Dressel is in far better shape than he was during his comeback in 2023 but he’s still slower than where he was at this time last year I think Yeah but that 50 free prelims swims looks good for a random meet in May Truly zero offense intended to him – I’m far from certain his heart is still in this sport Maybe but him going for the 50s only is probably a good idea after all Is so weird to see @RealCrocker5040 talking like a normal person… No offense intended… It’s good to see Bella climbing out of the hole that UofF put her in The jury is out if Nesty has any coaching skills or he is DEI Coach of the year One should not judge the pro’s as they are self sufficient Whitney is a first class idiot and should be selling used cars Where are all the guys hitting the panic button on Kharun now Because it’s the start of a new Olympic quad He already won double bronze as a teenager Let him enjoy the sport and become a better swimmer overall while helping his team succeed I’m sure he’ll be back to top form in the 2fly by LA I don’t think most people are “hitting the panic button” when it comes to his 50/100 The skepticism about whether his 200 will follow their trajectory is warranted imo The skeptics will stay skeptical until he has a 200 swim at worlds that’s at least comparable to his swim in Paris He’s more useful as a sprinter to Canada’s relays It’s also entirely possible he just had a bad swim in the 200 He can clearly take it out faster than a 56.8 which is what he took it out in It might not mean that his training is off Probably back with another hot take any minute During the final preliminary session of the 2025 Pro Swim Series stop in Fort Lauderdale, Gretchen Walsh broke her own world record in the 100 butterfly by nine-hundredths of a second touching in 55.09 to surpass her 55.18 mark from the semifinals of the U.S Walsh opened in 25.54 through the first 50 which was 0.09 slower than her world record pace but closed in a monstrous 29.55 — 18 hundredths quicker than she swam over the final lap in Indianapolis last summer Her sub-30 closing split this morning represents only the second time the 22-year-old has come home under that barrier with the other being her world record swim she closed in 30.09 in the Olympic semifinal and 30.11 in the Olympic Trials final where she notched her 3rd and 4th fastest swims ever While Walsh opened a few tenths slower than in the Olympic Trials final (25.20) and Olympic semifinal (25.29) she still stayed within striking distance of her record line Walsh now owns four of the five fastest swims in the history of the event, with Sarah Sjostrom’s 55.48 her gold medal-winning swim from the 2016 Rio Olympics remaining the only non-Walsh time on the list See a full splits comparison between Walsh’s four swiftest swims ever in addition to Sjostrom’s Rio clocking Walsh’s swim this morning marks her 15th world record in the past year having broken the aforementioned 100 fly at Trials helped Team USA to two relay records in Paris and set 11 total records at Short Course Worlds last December Todd Desorbo-coached Walsh made history last night too, becoming only the second woman in world history to dip under the 25-second barrier in the 50 fly, where she broke her own American record with a time of 24.93. Previously, Sjostrom, the six-time defending world champion in the event, who is sitting out this season after announcing her pregnancy Walsh has firmly established herself as the top short course swimmer on the planet While her dominance in short course yards was already evident during her standout career at the University of Virginia she finally had the opportunity to showcase that ability in short course meters last year—and did so in spectacular fashion She exploded at the Short Course World Championships this past December set 11 world records across six different events (including two relays) and rewrote the record books in the 50 free (22.83) She also posted the second-fastest time ever in the 100 free at 50.31 Walsh’s big breakout on the long course international stage began at the 2024 U.S where she opened with the previous world record in the 100 fly She also qualified in the 50 and 100 free events She also earned three relay medals: two golds in the women’s 4×100 medley and mixed 4×100 medley relays is the heavy favorite for gold in both the 50 and 100 fly at the World Championships and a serious medal threat in both sprint free events Where are the Aussie ‘bathtub’ comments all the downvotes but you were just .03 off The world is Gretchen’s bathtub at this point but it was actually kinda brilliant to do a small WR in prelims and (hopefully) a bigger WR in finals why are there so many more generational swimmers that are woman than men rn Walsh are winning by whole pool lengths while every male race is decently close Probably has been more common for women than men Thorpe dominated but Phelps generally had close competitors More competition in men’s events sometimes but not always And men need more taper or rest than women May 02nd, 2025 National, News, Pro Swim Series This will be a relatively short scratch report—there were only three top 16 scratches for the third finals session of the Fort Lauderdale Pro Swim Series None came from the women’s side of the meet and the only events affected were the men’s 200 backstroke and men’s 50 butterfly swam a lifetime best of 2:01.57 at February’s Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Our final scratch is the biggest name of the bunch, as Hunter Armstrong opted against swimming in the men’s 50 butterfly consolation final Armstrong qualified 15th for the final after swimming a 24.20 in heat one that stood as the event’s fastest time for six more heats Armstrong is much more well known on the international scene for his sprint backstroke and freestyle skills. He’s been as fast as 23.84 in the event. With Armstrong out, #17 Mikel Schreuders (24.31) has a lane in the final That gives the Sun Devil pro a quick double this evening as he is also the second-fastest qualifier for the championship final of the men’s 50 breaststroke Schreuders posted a 27.38 in the men’s 50 breaststroke this morning touching behind only training partner Michael Andrew (27.02) she joined her local club team because her best friend convinced her it would be fun Shoulder surgery ended her competitive swimming days long ago More from Sophie KaufmanSee All we are discussing the madness that occurred at the Ft Lauderdale too big and disruptive to the Aquatic Center after three revisions May 04th, 2025 National, Pro Swim Series, Race Videos Didn’t catch the final night of action from the Fort Lauderdale Pro Swim Series we’ve got you covered with some of the races videos On the final night of the 2025 Pro Swim Series, 28-year-old Katie Ledecky—widely regarded as both the greatest freestyler in history and the greatest female swimmer of all time—saved her best swim of the week for last breaking her own 800 freestyle world record This is Ledecky’s 16th career individual world record and her first since nearly seven years ago—May 16 when she set the current 1500 free standard (15:20.48) at the Pro Swim Series meet in Indianapolis Ledecky’s improvement came primarily from both the first and final 50s She opened the race with a blistering 27.59 over the first lap—nearly half a second faster than her previous record swim—and by the 150 mark she was already more than a second ahead of her old pace Ledecky slightly fell off her previous splits particularly between the 200 and 400 marks she began to build significant momentum again after the 500 turn with the crowd really starting to get engaged Her biggest margin of improvement came over the final 50 where she blasted a 28.46—more than half a second faster than the 28.99 she recorded to close her former record Ledecky’s 400 splits tonight were 4:01.78 and 4:02.34 compared to her previous world record halves of 4:01.98 and 4:02.81 Fun fact: Ledecky’s final 400 split tonight of 4:02.34 would place her as the 19th-fastest performer of all time in the individual 400 free She ranks 3rd all-time in the event with her 3:56.46 clocking from the Rio Olympics Additionally, Ledecky’s first 200 (1:58.38) and last 200 (1:59.85) add up to 3:58.22, which would situate her 4th all-time in the individual 400, behind only herself, Ariarne Titmus, and Summer McIntosh That time is nearly three seconds faster than her bronze-medal swim in the individual event at the Paris Olympics and she’s only been faster than that time in the individual event on three occasions See a full splits comparison between her new and old records below Jillian Cox wound up 2nd in the race with an 8:23.58 All four of those have been swum in the past 12 months Katharine Berkoff The swim marks her fastest 100 back of the year so far  Gretchen Walsh made simply made history becoming the first woman to break 55 seconds in the 100 fly with a mind-boggling 54.60 The swim came after she had already broken her own world record earlier in prelims clocking 55.09 to surpass her previous mark of 55.18 from the semifinals of the U.S Walsh opened in 25.32 and brought it home in 29.28 pairing her third-fastest opening 50 with a massive back half to produce a 54.60 her prelims swim saw her go out in 25.54 before closing in what was then her fastest back half ever The sprinter is widely known for her front-end speed, but her 29.28 on the final 50 ranks her 3rd all-time, with only Regan Smith (28.94) and Maggie MacNeil (29.09) closing faster This newfound endurance at the end of the race has opened lots of doors for her in this event Walsh now owns the five fastest swims in the history of the 100 fly, bumping Sarah Sjostrom’s 55.48—her gold medal-winning performance from the 2016 Rio Olympics—out of the all-time top five See a full splits comparison between Walsh’s five quickest swims ever Walsh’s swim tonight marks her 16th world record in the past year having broken the aforementioned 100 fly at Trials and prelims i’m just here impatiently waiting for the (hopefully) Monday podcast recap of this This meet was one of the best swim meets I’ve ever watched which is limited to two top swimmers per country per event This meet had everything (except relays): Close races seasoned veterans reminding us how great they are; plus WORLD RECORDS and other dramatic results Meets like this will create a larger audience of fans and that will allow Pro Swimming to continue growing The only thing I see holding Pro Swimming back is high school quality coverage Just to touch on my two ‘growl at screen’ issues: (1) When the announcer says “and in Lane 3 we have …” – immediately please shift… Read more » rowdy or whoever this guy is screaming into the microphone more Rowdy hate 🙄 what’s this guy supposed to do he was PA for the meet And don’t hate on Rowdy he forgets more about swimming in one broadcast than you’ll ever know Awesome human being and isn’t that what matters he may be awesome but his knowledge is not great Or he at least it doesn’t come across that he knows anything about past accomplishments splits and their histories (like why everyone is near WR splits near the beginning of a particular race) The only exceptions are people like Dressel or Ledecky I’m getting a feeling this Gretchen lass is kinda good at butterfly May 02nd, 2025 National, Previews & Recaps, Pro Swim Series Day 3 Prelims Heat Sheet it’s time to see what Day 3 has in store we’ll see heats for the 200 freestyle On the men’s side, Shaine Casas aims to set himself up to keep his undefeated run at the 2025 Pro Swim Series winning six events in Westmont and pulling off a double last night He’s got another double on tap today as he’s entered in the 200 freestyle and 50 butterfly continuing to take on some non-primary events in his return to competition Marchand is also entered in his bread-and-butter 400 IM to close out this session Though both 400 IM world record holders, Marchand and Summer McIntosh Rather than take on the 200 freestyle or 400 IM one of the untraditional events on her schedule this weekend Entered with a yards time, Claire Curzan won heat three of 10 swimming a 2:02.68 to take over the top time of the morning through the early heats They came within .67 seconds of her on the third 50 but Curzan dug in over the final 50 meters to lengthen the lead again She owns a lifetime best 2:00.36 from May 2022 in this race 400-yard IM NCAA champion Caroline Bricker overwrote that time in heat five We’ve seen Bricker continually rewrite her lifetime bests in yards this season She translated the yards lifetime best of 1:41.73 she swam at NCAAs this season to a 2.63-second best here in Ft improving from the 2:04.21 she swam in 2021 Katie Ledecky made a statement in the penultimate heat She swam 1:56.44 (56.63/59.91) as she pulled away from her heat on the back half of the race Her time held up through the final heat as the fastest of the morning and she’ll swim out of lane four as she looks for her third win of the meet It also makes her the fourth-fastest swimmer in the world this season slotting between Stefanie Balduccini (1:56.43) and Mary-Sophie Harvey (1:56.46) with finals still to come The battle between Olympians Erin Gemmell and Claire Weinstein resulted in the second and third fastest times of the morning The Sandpiper will be one to watch in the final as she ripped a personal best 4:01 for third in last night’s 400 freestyle Alex Shackell’s 1:58.62 for second in heat nine slotted in fourth overall and Huske ended up being significant as Manuel and Erisman grabbed the outside lanes for tonight’s championship final The top four men in the heat were all under Dolan’s time Canadian teenager Francis Brennan led a quartet of swimmers that overtook Dilger’s time in the next heat It was the first sub-1:51 swim of the session with Virginia Tech’s Tanish George Mathew touching second in the heat over a second behind in 1:51.76 Georgia’s Tomas Koski was lights out in the first circle-seeded heat He accelerated away from the field early and posted a 1:46.43 tying his lifetime best and Finnish record Koski is coming off another successful season with the Bulldogs where he continued to make strides on the national stage in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle Hobson had the lead at the 100-meter mark, but Ohio State’s Tomas Navikonis pushed on the third 50 with Hobson and Foster tied for second .14 seconds back Navikonis extended his lead slightly down the stretch just eight-hundredths off his personal best who had an excellent yards season and hit a lifetime best 1:48.02 to qualify for the final Virginia teammates Emma Weber and Alex Walsh faced off in the next heat Walsh took second in the heat with a 30.97 Smith hit the wall second in the last heat and was the fourth woman of the morning to break 31 seconds (30.95) Two men broke 29 seconds ahead of the circle-seeded heats led by Nicholas Stefanidis win from heat three in 28.75 Victor Gil was second in that heat with a 28.97 last night’s men’s 100 breaststroke winner with a personal best Sun Devil pros Michael Andrew and Mikel Schreuders took over as the top two swimmers of the morning in the last heat Andrew won in a season-best 27.02 that’s less than two-tenths from his Pro Swim Series record Romanov’s time from the first circle-seeded heat held up for the third-fastest qualifying time, while heat seven winner, Aleksas Savickas Gretchen Walsh didn’t skip a beat as she turned her attention from the 100 freestyle to the 50 butterfly Walsh broke 53-seconds in the 100 free for the first time in her career she’s taken out the six-year-old Pro Swim Series record in the 50 butterfly Walsh is the American record holder in this event a standard she scared this morning with a blistering 25.15 She shattered Osman’s Pro Swim Series record of 25.65 and will get another crack at her American and U.S Walsh was out incredibly fast on the way to her world record in the 100 butterfly but this is the first time we’ve gotten to see her race the long-course 50 butterfly since 2023 she broke the super-suited SCM 50 fly world record becoming the first woman sub-24 seconds (23.94) Her Virginia teammate Kate Douglass was nearly under the former Pro Swim Series record herself posting a 25.71 to qualify second for this evening’s championship final The swim ties the lifetime best she posted at the Westmont Pro Swim who has now logged two ninth-place finishes She was ninth in the 200 freestyle and her 26.73 in the 50 butterfly kept her out of the championship final by .12 seconds overtaking Armstrong’s time as the fastest of the morning Chris Guiliano threatened the 24-second barrier in heat 10 on the back half of that same double His former official best time stood at 25.41 from March 2021 Guiliano’s time squeaked into the championship final in eighth as the sub-24 second swims started coming fast and furious over the next few heats Casas destroyed the barrier in the very next heat His undefeated streak was ended earlier this session as he missed the 200 free championship final (as did Guiliano) but he struck back here with a resounding 23.45 tying Casas’ time for third-fastest overall After skipping the 100 freestyle yesterday, Dressel got his meet underway with a 23.58. He qualified easily for tonight’s championship final with that time, moving through fifth overall. The sixth swimmer to break 24 seconds this morning was Kamal Muhammad who recently announced his transfer from Virginia to Tennessee for the upcoming NCAA season After demolishing his 50 backstroke personal best yesterday, Quintin McCarty did the same in the 50 butterfly breaking the 24.49 best he brought into the meet and joined Guiliano in approaching the 24-second mark for the first time in his career Virginia’s Charlotte Wilson led for all of heat four taking the win in a 2:17.38 that rattled her lifetime best of 2:16.17 from June 2023 It was a close call at the touch for the win though as Ella Cosgrove dug in over the back half of the race She clocked 1:09.08 on the second 100 meters and a 34.69 beating her entry time by three-hundredths It was another Virginia swimmer, Curzan, who took the win in heat five. Curzan, the American record holder in the 200-yard backstroke, moved into the lead at the 100-meter mark. She held off Erika Pelaez‘s charge down the stretch for the win in 2:11.19 who just wrapped her freshman year at NC State came .22 seconds from her lifetime best with a 2:11.89 Rhyan White won the penultimate heat in 2:11.82. The heat had three DNS athletes in it, including Bella Sims who placed 13th in the 200 freestyle earlier this session The final heat was crowded with talent, including Smith, Summer McIntosh, Audrey Derivaux Crush led at the 100-meter mark in 1:02.15 though Smith took the lead at the final turn by four-hundredths and Smith maintained her lead at the finish She stopped the clock in 2:08.65 for the fastest time of the morning just off the season-best 2:08.33 from the Westmont Pro Swim McIntosh moved past Crush for second in the heat and overall clocking a 2:08.91 as she gears up for the final Crush rounded out the top three qualifiers with a 2:09.76 The top four qualifiers all came from the final heat with 15-year-old Derivaux swimming a 2:11.01 She’s been as fast as 2:06.88 this season which makes her fourth-fastest in the world and top American swimmer this season Puerto Rico’s Yeziel Morales held off a push from Canada’s Aiden Norman to win heat four a Florida freshman who won double backstroke gold at the 2024 Junior Pan Pacific Championships The final heat belonged to reigning Olympic champion Hubert Kos He easily separated himself from the field in the final heat splitting 30.47/30.33/30.27 over the final 150-meters to get his hand on the wall in 1:58.54 It’s the fastest time of the morning by a wide margin and the only one under 2:00 Sun Devil Deniz Ertan dominated heat three clocking 4:52.25 to win by over six seconds That time stood up through the non-circle-seeded heats even as a close race between Sydney Hardy and Brinkleigh Hansen was decided by a hundredth Emma Weyant took over the lead from Ellen Walshe on the breaststroke leg of heat six The two were about four seconds up on Kayla Han taking over the top time from Ertan by just under 12 seconds Walshe touched second in the heat with a 4:42.10 Eleanor Sun tried to move ahead of Han on the freestyle leg She fell short as Han took third in 4:45.11 but 4:45.59 marks a lifetime best for Sun by over two seconds The next heat saw another race between Virginia training partners Grimes was in control of the first half of their 400 IM heat but Hayes made the pass on the breaststroke leg with a 1:19.50 split to Grimes’ 1:24.74 She was 1.39 seconds ahead of Grimes as she turned for freestyle and continued to outsplit Grimes over the freestyle clocking a 4:40.70 for the second-fastest qualifying time Caroline Bricker and Helena Rosendahl Bach also qualified for the championship final from the final heat Bricker swam her second personal best of the day with a 4:46.21 taking about two-tenths off her 400 IM best Bach is best known on the international stage for her 200 fly abilities by easily qualified for the championship final here in 4:46.82 swimming a 4:29.97 to break 4:30 for the first time There was a tie in heat four at 4:28.31 between Jacob Turner and Wilson York Bobby Finke shot to the top of the leaderboard in heat five stomping to a heat win by nearly three seconds Grant Sanders pulled within 2.5 seconds of Finke after the breaststroke leg by Finke widened the gap with a 1:01.13 freestyle split Finke’s 4:20.34 is a season-best for him getting under his finals time from the Southern Zone South Sectional Championships by six-hundredths Finke’s time remained the fastest of the morning as world record holder Leon Marchand won the final heat in 4:21.04 as he qualified for the 200 freestyle championship final at the start of the session Interestingly, though Marchand had a sizable lead after the backstroke leg, Tommy Bried ate into his lead on the breaststroke leg which is where Marchand historically breaks the race open Bried outsplit Marchand on freestyle as well Marchand did enough to touch .48 seconds ahead of Bried Bried’s 4:21.52 qualified third overall while Vargas’ time held up for eighth overall Just out of nowhere started in the TYR series again Seems to not be training with Nesty and his bad group McIntosh was really annoyed with herself for not taking it out with Regan at short course worlds She’ll probably correct that tonight But the correct decision to test herself and build a base Good to see Francis get a major pb he has been stuck in the same area since the summer I’m pretty sure UVA is taking exams right now so that could explain Curzan not doing well or she’s just in really hard training I know deep down in my heart that she will be a good LCM 200 Freestyler with time and training Why can’t TYR make a cap that fits Ledecky probably just not having a great meet but curzan is unfortunately looking really rough Btw I thought this meet would have live recap Torri no 😭 two separate 9th place finishes has to be frustrating May 04th, 2025 National, News, Pro Swim Series There were more individual World Records yesterday than in the entire Paris Olympics and here are some other swims that may have gone under radar Out of the early heats of the women’s 800 free, Michaela Mattes hacked 10 seconds off her best time to drop from an 8:44 to 8:34.76 That ended up ranking fifth after the final heat was swum and she also now ranks #5 among US women so far this season She may well have landed herself a place in the final heat at US Trials with this swim Jack Harvey, who swims internationally for Bermuda, dropped over a second off his entry time in the 100 backstroke to claim second in the final behind Hubert Kos He broke his own Bermudan record in the morning with a 54.87 and sliced another three-tenths off in to go 54.56 in the evening and he is now less than half a second off the World Aquatics ‘A’ cut McCarty swam the heats of the 100 back here shaving half a second off his best of 55.73 to go 55.26 before scratching the final in favour of the 50 where he ended up placing third Leah Hayes took on a tough double tonight In the first of those she set a new best time in both heats and finals shaving eight-tenths off over the course of the day to end with a time of 2:27.60 and contribute to a Virginia 1-2-3 Hayes swam this event at both ACCs and NCAAs finishing sixth at the conference championships before adding time at Federal Way to finish 17th With her IM 2.5  seconds off her best of 2:08.91 she could have far more time to drop when fully tapered he could crack NCAA qualification next year It was also over a second faster than she came home when swimming the record and again showcases the freestyle gains she has made this season Tolu Young set his third Fijian record in three days here in a quintessentially Arizona State slate of 50 free He shaved 0.42 off his own 50 free record today in 22.29 in the prelims before going under the old record again in finals with a 22.53 In a field that included Olympic champions in the 100 and 200 breast, Virginia’s Emma Weber pulled out a win in the 100 Breast on the 2nd night in Ft Lauderdale which entails saving a bit of energy until the final 15m paid off for her in a final that included Lilly King Glad to hear she’s looking for more in short course – clearly very talented and will be exciting to see if she can get it just right for her senior year She’s an Olympian and has been on several NCAA champion six-tenths off her best to go 30.90 With the 100 breaststroke looking open for US women so far this season she could be primed to make the top-two at trials Campbell McKean was the top American in the 100 breaststroke yesterday and although he didn’t claim that title in the 50 today he had two huge swims Entering with a best time of 28.55 from last summer (although he split 28.41 in the 100 last
