and complex challenges are at the heart of what Americans define as the toughest jobs in the country
One in five employed respondents said you need to be “extremely tough” to do their job
Commissioned by Bosch Power Tools and conducted by Talker Research
the poll asked 2,000 Americans — including 1,000 trade workers — what comes to mind when they think of difficult professions
The results offer insight not only into which jobs are considered the most demanding
but also into what Americans value in a tough role
Descriptions of tough jobs ranged from “solving other people’s problems all day with little to no help” to “constantly making quick decisions and being stuck in stressful situations daily,” and “something that pushes my physical and mental limits.”
While many identified specific professions
nearly half of employed Americans — regardless of role — believe their job is hard
more than double the 21 percent reported by non-trade workers
A large majority — 72 percent — said trade workers are generally tougher than non-trade workers
and 81 percent of all surveyed said trade workers don’t get enough credit for the work they do
Nearly half — 49 percent — of non-trade respondents said they’d consider a career in the trades
68 percent of those who didn’t have access to trade skills courses in high school indicated they would have taken them if given the chance
Among respondents not currently working in a trade
and the majority of that group — 70 percent — said they would do it again
with 88 percent of all participants encouraging younger Americans to consider a trade as a career path
“Pursuing a career in the trades offers a variety of benefits with hands-on experiences that cultivate practical skills and provide a lifelong sense of purpose,” said Robert Hesse
regional president of Bosch Power Tools in North America
the skilled trades remain a reliable and rewarding path for more and more Americans.”
the survey also explored what trade workers want the public — and their employers — to understand about the work they do
with 57 percent of trade workers reporting up to four “close calls” on the job in the past year
nearly a third — 31 percent — said they’ve left a job site because it felt unsafe
Key improvements requested include better training on equipment (32 percent)

He was taken to the Bergen County Jail pending a court appearance
A second 16-year-old student has been charged in connection with a violent stabbing at Fort Lee High School—this time
when a 16-year-old student repeatedly stabbed a classmate during a fight
and the victim was rushed to an area hospital with serious injuries
The first suspect was arrested on scene and charged with first-degree attempted murder
Investigators continued their work and later determined that another student had helped plan and carry out the attack
was taken into protective custody on May 2
He is being held at the Bergen County Juvenile Detention Center pending a court hearing

Fort Lee parents and students faulted administrators two weeks after a teenager was critically injured in a stabbing at the high school
saying the district needs to do more to ensure children's safety
Nearly two dozen people spoke during the public comment section of Monday's Board of Education meeting
Many criticized a perceived lack of action by school leadership in addressing bad behavior
which they said has allowed acts of violence to escalate into the most recent incident
said the students need more support and protection from these acts
She called for an increase in suspensions and expulsions of problematic students
regardless of the optics that may result from stricter punishment
"It’s a shame to have gone from such prestige to what we are facing now," Mayer said
"We need to care about the culture we want to cultivate in the Fort Lee school community
not what it looks like to outsiders’ standards of achievements and testing."
At the meeting students said they witnessed the actions of their undisciplined peers firsthand
from skipping class to smoking and fighting in the bathrooms
They also reported minimal engagement by administrators
giving some students more freedom to act out and causing others to feel at risk because of it
"How am I supposed to feel safe and not feel worried when I’m going into the bathroom at any given point in my school day?" said Maxim Startsev
The situation has reached the point where Nikola Antic
can hardly wait to graduate in a few weeks and move on to college
"I cannot be gladder that I’m leaving," he said
"I do not want to be associated with this school
Superintendent Robert Kravitz said the administration has met multiple times with Fort Lee police to discuss security measures
The district is also looking to implement new programs for students exhibiting behavioral issues
"We are trying to be proactive as best we can," Kravitz said
Several speakers Monday alleged that many of the issues are caused by teens who do not attend the school and
One student said he and his younger brother have heard directly from multiple teens who regularly visit the school that they live in New York
Kravitz said the district has a designated residency officer who makes sure all students are properly enrolled
The administration takes action when alerted of someone at the school who does not live in the area
Some speakers Monday expressed the need for a special meeting between school officials and the parents and students in the community to address their concerns
Multiple board members supported this idea in hopes that it will provide transparency for the public and reduce anxiety surrounding their school experience
I hope that our administration is taking them to heart and that a meeting is scheduled so they do feel engaged and part of the process," said board member Paula Colbath
for sharing their thoughts during the meeting
Board member Kacy Knight encouraged the students to keep attending meetings and work with the district so they can help improve its reputation
"You truly know what the problem is," Knight said
"We have to speculate and we have to make best guesses

Jeremy Casilli started his career in restaurant development in New York City
But driving through North Jersey on his way in from Rockland County
“When I looked at space down in Jersey City
This is gonna be the sixth borough,” he said
and just kind of reignited the whole Gold Coast along the water.”
He heeded the advice, opening Pier 115 in Edgewater and Hudson & Co. in Jersey City, among others. His latest restaurant is Drift in Weehawken
and there’s another Gold Coast eatery of his in the works in West New York
The Gold Coast — the roughly 20-mile stretch from Fort Lee to Bayonne — has swelled in recent years with new residential construction and
Restaurants have played a critical role in the redevelopment
“All these developers have been looking to go to restaurant proprietors to find anchors,” Casilli said
If you build a good conglomerate of serious restaurateurs
that is bringing business to them whether they’re trying to fill a mall or they’re trying to fill a vacancy.”
concerns that the rapid influx of higher-end businesses and high rises is pushing communities out
serve the people that have lived in these changing cities for years
“The community has always been here,” said Andrew Christianson, director of operations at Blu on the Hudson
“It’s just asking us for something different now.”
A renaissance led by restaurantsGold Coast communities once thrived at the turn and well into the 20th century. Fort Lee was known as the Hollywood of the East
a passenger elevator and an amusement park that opened in 1891
It was also (and continues to be) a melting pot of immigrants
But the loss of port, railroad and manufacturing jobs, deindustrialization and increased crime in the mid-20th century sent many of those communities into disrepair
Some cities took longer than others to rebuild
And there are still places working on their comeback
Since reinvestment in these cities started some 30 years ago, people have been ringing the alarm bells of gentrification’s deleterious effects
The relaxing of rent controls along the Gold Coast and the construction of luxury units in residential areas has forced out many residents
There have been efforts to boost affordable housing percentages in these communities
and those who have been a part of the Gold Coast’s renaissance see evidence that thoughtful planning has retained the area’s socioeconomic and cultural diversity
Restaurants are a visible way to see the proof of that
president of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce
“This being one of the most diverse places in the U.S.
people love to tell their stories through food
I think you’re seeing diversity celebrated at a time when it’s being questioned
Korean and other immigrants over the last century-plus
Go today and you’ll find a wide diversity of restaurants
The annual Fort Lee Restaurant Week puts that diversity on a pedestal
vice president of the Fort Lee Business District Alliance
The alliance surveyed restaurant owners last year about why Fort Lee appealed to them to determine
‘Why did you choose Fort Lee?’ The responses are not only consistent
but they’re overwhelmingly positive,” Glennon said before last year's Restaurant Week
and they see it as a place where things are going on and where things will be going on
Restaurants have not only driven revenue in Gold Coast communities like Fort Lee
but they also become major employers and have helped to attract other businesses
and retaining a diversity of culinary offerings of those restaurants is paramount
but one of the exciting things is you see a lot of diversity in the food offerings because it reflects the people who live here,” he said
“You can get anything you want within an hour.”
People are moving to the Gold Coast. From 2012 to 2022, Jersey City’s population rose almost 12%. Hundreds of new apartment buildings have opened
And several massive hotels have opened in Fort Lee
With those new hotels and apartment buildings come restaurants
These eateries create dining spaces for locals
and draw in people from New York City and beyond
with picture-perfect skyline views and Wagyu steaks
But then we have an uncanny pull from Philadelphia
We just had people say they drove two hours to come here because
He added that while Hoboken may be maxed out on space
“It’s the surrounding community [that] is growing.”
Edwards said part of his job at the Chamber is to curate the experience for people who may not have visited Gold Coast communities in a while (or ever)
and they’re an interesting dynamic that people are coming from across North Jersey,” he said
they may tend to go back and forth [to New York City] but if they live here a little bit
they dig in and look for things in their hometown.”
opened a second location in Weehawken late last year
Partners Dominique Paulin and chef Olivier Muller first came upon the spot some four years ago and appreciated the skyline views it provides and the proximity to New York City
“We felt like it touched some of our existing customer base but it’s far away from us so we’re not competing with ourselves,” Muller said
We felt like it was a great location to expand.”
“It was a good location closer to New York
The concentration of good restaurants — Weehawken itself welcomed Drift
Faubourg and Blu on the Hudson in the last two years — makes these cities a destination for diners
“We came from the New York scene and worked there for 20 years," he said
"I think it forces you to be creative and to work at what you do
I think it’ll create a dining scene where people will want to come to Weehawken.”
A variety of causes led to the regrowth of Gold Coast communities — folks being priced out of New York City
the improvement of those cities on the Jersey Coast
While that helped lead to the creation of residential buildings
the word has gotten around that sitting on a rooftop patio overlooking the New York City skyline with a drink in hand is a worthwhile visit
That matters to the health of the restaurant scene here: Faubourg Weehawken almost doubles its capacity in summer
and Casilli said that helps offset the costs of running a restaurant in the cold months
“I look at it like an insurance policy for success,” he said
“Winter takes a nosedive — I don't know why because all the restaurants are very cozy — but as soon as spring
That’s why I’ve been focused on rooftop deals and waterfront properties.”
The rebirth of the Gold Coast as a destination is so successful
some are beginning to think of it not as an extension of New York City anymore — it’s just Jersey
“I really strongly resist the language of being the sixth borough because I think we stand on our own,” Edwards said
If you look at the hotels along the Hudson River waterfront
they’re staying almost full consistently throughout the year.”
the Gold Coast is likely to bring in more people
Casilli is opening a more casual eatery in West New York in a space that hasn’t been touched for 20 years
Blu on the Hudson is gearing up for a lively summer with a lineup of live music and events (and they’re opening another location in Livingston later this year)
is planning for the increased crowds the 2026 World Cup will bring into the region
The hope is all that economic growth comes back to the community that started it
“I think if you look at New Jersey just in general
this is one of the growing counties," he said
He's not alone: The hopes are high up and down the coast for an even more gilded Gold Coast
“I think we’re going to exceed the posture that we had in the 1960s as being the place to live in Bergen County,” Glennon said of Fort Lee
the place to live in northern New Jersey and with a little bit of license
one of the great places to live in the New York metropolitan area… I don’t wanna get carried away here.”

"We strive to handle every call the best we can
it's based on the training and the experience of the officers responding ..
I think we do a very good job responding."
Fort Lee resident Rose Ann Kim posed whether the Fort Lee Police could hire police officers who already have mental health training and credentials
Heinze told Kim to forward the resumes of any potential officers
he noted that the police department is participating in the ARRIVE Together program

While the officials tried to provide as many answers as possible
the one thing they could not answer with certainty is the status of the investigation into the shooting

Her mother told NorthJersey.com that she was "very disappointed" with the meeting
found the investigation was going "slow," and the police did not apologize
Her father said the police have not met with the family
Heinze said to NorthJersey.com that the police officer who shot Victoria Lee is out on workmen's comp
and other officers involved in the shooting have returned to work
He confirmed that he has not spoken to Lee's father because he did not feel it was something he should do while the investigation was ongoing

The Fort Lee Fire Department is hosting a fundraising event to support a longtime member and his family
who lost everything in a Valentine's Day fire in Leonia
The fire, at an apartment complex on Grand Avenue, broke out Friday morning, sweeping through two apartment buildings and leaving at least 10 families displaced and two pets missing
In the wake of the fire, family, friends and members of the community have organized several fundraisers to support the victims
including GoFundMe campaigns and clothing drives
On Tuesday, the Fort Lee Volunteer Fire Department announced on Facebook that it will be holding a fundraiser in support of Mike DeGidio and his family
The post said DeGidio has worked with the Fort Lee Volunteer Fire Department for more than 40 years
serving as the chief and then coming back as a lieutenant
"It's our turn to help our brother in need after a fire ravaged his home last week in Leonia," says the post
"Mike is the kind of human who would give anyone at any time the shirt off his back
Other donations and gift cards will also be accepted
Checks can be made payable to Hook & Ladder Co
a dedicated 40-year veteran of the Fort Lee Fire Department
Now it's our turn to help him," says the post
"Let's come together as a community and show support for one of our own."
PETERSBURG – Last week’s move by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to change the name of a North Carolina Army post back to Fort Bragg may have opened the door to the possibility of other installations
does not see that happening – at least as easily as the change back to Fort Bragg
“The one thing about Fort Liberty that made the name maybe easier to change is that you could take the name ‘Liberty’ off and put ‘Bragg’ back on without disrespecting a particular family or a particular veteran whose memory was being honored,” the Virginia Democrat and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee told The Progress-Index on Thursday afternoon during a Zoom session with Virginia journalists
“The naming of the Virginia bases was not after liberty or vague concepts
They were named after real people who were deserving of respect.”
10 as part of the Trump administration’s efforts at rolling back mandated diversity initiatives during the Biden administration
One of those initiatives was a special Pentagon commission charged with finding new names for 10 Army posts named for Confederate leaders from the Civil War to reflect diversity in the present-day armed services
Among those changed in April 2023 was Fort Lee in Prince George County
It took on the name “Fort Gregg-Adams" in honor of two high-ranking Army officers of color – retired Lt
Gregg was at one time the highest-ranked general who was Black
all-woman 6888th Battalion that delivered mail to the European theater in World War II
Gregg and Adams were chosen from a pool of 10 name suggestions submitted to the commission
More: Virginia State University is chosen to host Virginia gubernatorial debate later this year
How did Hegseth come to his conclusion? The same law that created the Naming Commission also gave authority to the secretary of defense to rename any military installation after anyone unaffiliated with the Confederacy or any segregationist activity
Hegseth used that authority to change Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg
only this time named for Private 1st Class Roland Bragg
Hegseth promised all names changed by the commission were fair game
Hegseth’s action has the blessing of President Donald Trump
who during his first term in 2020 vetoed the Defense Authorization bill because of the name-change stipulation
Trump has promised to reverse any of his predecessor’s actions based on diversity
equality and inclusion – known by the acronym “DEI.”
Kaine told The Progress-Index last week that he did not want to comment specifically on any Virginia post name change now because none have happened yet
it’s much harder to take the name off a base when it’s the name of an actual person whose service was stellar and whose community is very
very proud and honored with their new names,” he said
whose district includes the Tri-City area and Fort Gregg-Adams
also is not a fan of changing Fort Gregg-Adams' name
She told The Progress-Index in a statement that while she “cannot predict what Secretary Hegseth will do
I certainly hope he does not change the name.” Part of the new name was recommended by the late Rep
whose death in November 2022 opened the door to a special election won by McClellan
McClellan said when she visited Fort Gregg-Adams in 2024 with Gregg and saw the reception people gave him
“it was clear that he was a beloved and inspiring figure to the service members and entire base community.” Gregg
noted for his work in military logistics and quartermaster service
“I can think of no more fitting namesakes for the center and home of logistics and sustainment for the U.S
But is the overall community as receptive to the name as political leaders believe they are
The Progress-Index asked citizens for their thoughts about putting yet another name on the post that has been a part of central Virginia since the early 20th century
Results were mixed – some thought it would be a waste of money by an administration railing against wasteful spending
while others said the name should not have been changed in the first place
“We can continue to honor the memory of those who fought for the Confederacy while we move forward to recognize those who more recently
served our country so devotedly,” Petersburg resident Diane Curling said in an email
She added that she thought further name changes would cost “a great deal of money − several millions by all accounts.”
“I'm grateful for the name change to Fort Gregg-Adams to honor patriots
I have to correct myself sometimes from saying the previous name
Kyle Tucker says the political tone of the change was not lost on him
“The big political statement of the new administration is the equivalent of your sibling sticking their finger close to your face and saying
we aren’t honoring Confederate soldiers but a soldier with the same last name who
Bragg who won a Silver Star and Purple Heart in his service in WWII
but are we really expected to believe that it was purely coincidental that they just so happen to have the same last name?”
several who responded said the name should never have been changed in the first place
People know it as Fort Lee and will always call it that
You can't erase history,” Jeanne Rose posted on The Progress-Index Facebook page
We all have a choice to take offense or not.”
some others said there were more important things to be concerned with than the names of military posts
I wasn’t for changing it in the first place
“The amount of money we [are] wasting for nonsense
just stop wasting time and money on nonsense.”
In its final report to the Pentagon, the Naming Commission estimated the cost of renaming Fort Gregg-Adams was around $2.4 million. Two years ago, USA TODAY put the total cost for all base renamings at around $60 million
A common last nameAccording to some ancestry-themed sites on the internet
the last name “Lee” is among the top 20 most common surnames in the U.S
The Progress-Index did a quick Google search of famous (and not so famous) non-Confederate soldiers with the last name of Lee
While the most common pop-up was Revolutionary War figure and former Virginia governor and congressman Gen
Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee – incidentally
Lee – one came up that had both a tie to central Virginia and a nod to diversity
His name is Fitz Lee, who was born in 1866 in Dinwiddie County and later joined the group of Black troops known as the “Buffalo Soldiers.” According to the National Park Service website
Lee was part of M Troop of the 10th Cavalry
and served during the Spanish-American War
The five soldiers went ashore and surprised the Spanish holding their comrades
The rescuers were able to free all the wounded soldiers
and Thompkins were awarded the Medal of Honor in the summer of 1899 for their actions at Tayabacoa
Lee received his Medal of Honor while he was in the hospital at Fort Bliss
His health declined quickly after the rescue mission
and abdominal pain that left him bedridden for three months
Lee was medically discharged from the Army on July 5
a few days after receiving the Medal of Honor
He was buried with full military honors at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery in Kansas
The other Virginia posts renamed in 2023 are the former Fort AP Hill in Caroline County and Fort Pickett in Nottoway County
AP Hill became Fort Walker in memory of Dr
a Civil War-era surgeon for the North who is the only woman and civilian to be awarded the Medal of Honor for her service to Union troops
and the feds actually took away her medal in 1917
It was returned to her in 1977 by former President Jimmy Carter
which had been transferred from the Army to the Virginia National Guard
became Fort Barfoot in memory of retired Col
who received the Medal of Honor for bravery during World War II
he successfully fought off efforts by his Richmond area neighborhood's homeowners association to force him to remove a 21-foot flagpole from his yard
The disagreement gained national attention and prompted the association to back down

PRIOR REPORTING: Attempted Murder Charge For Fort Lee Stabbing Suspect
Amadou Traore came out for track in the spring of his sophomore year to stay in condition for basketball and to improve his athletic ability
"They made everyone try hurdling and I was good at it," the Fort Lee senior said
he had become the Bridgemen's best hurdler
although a tactical mistake in the sectionals at Vernon cost him a potential chance at making the state group championships
"I had been using five steps between hurdles all season and as I got faster
"I decided to try three stepping and I got over four hurdles before I lost the rhythm and I had to finish the race bounding over the last six hurdles
he became a regular at the Fort Lee track and got athletic director Mike Rafferty to open up the shed to get the hurdles out
he's going to do it right," Fort Lee indoor track coach Nicole Pacciani said
"I'm pretty short for a basketball player (5-foot-7)
and I knew that hurdling was for me," said Traore
who called his basketball coach and told him he was leaving the sport to concentrate on track
Traore is constantly watching videos on YouTube and TikTok to hone his skills
I test out the techniques and see what works for me."
The Bridgemen didn't have a dedicated hurdles coach when Traore took up the sport
but former Emerson coach Trevor Hedges came on board last winter and Traore has been on a roll ever since
He won league titles in the hurdles both indoors and outdoors last year
breaking the school indoor record for the first time
He finished sixth in the indoor state sectionals last winter but made the finals at the Group 3 state meet for the first time
"I'm not where I want to be outdoors (in the 110-meter hurdles) because I got gassed later in the race
and I've worked hard on my speed endurance and try to race full speed
like I've been able to do indoors," he said
"I wish all my kids worked half as hard as he does," Pacciani said
"The younger kids look up to him and they see how hard he works and how many medals he wins
and it keeps them interested in a winter when we can't even get outside to practice."
He hopes his winter success leads to bigger things
like a shot at his first State Meet of Champions this winter and a school record in the 110 hurdles in the spring
where he hopes to study physical therapy or athletic training
Traore decided to have "a little fun" last fall and went out for football for the first time
playing running back and corner for the 7-3 Bridgemen
especially football," said the Jets fan who is also proficient in the latest Madden video game
He even loves watching musicals like "The Greatest Showman" and "High School Musical"
"I just think the songs are catchy and the movies are fun to watch."

She cannot commit any new crimes and must avoid contact with the alleged victim and her own 12-year-old son
Ramundo said the Department of Child Protection and Permanency would determine whether she can reunite with her son
She will have to check in by telephone to pretrial services every other week and in person every other week she is not calling in
