Adventist HealthCare Fort Washington Medical Center has been recognized for its efforts to drive down patient waiting times in its emergency department
earning a prestigious award from US Acute Care Solutions (USACS)
The hospital was given the “No Patient Left Behind” Exceptional Achievement and Site Transformation award
which was introduced by USACS in 2024 to honor teams making impactful improvements at hospitals along the East Coast
Fort Washington Medical Center’s emergency department is among the first to receive the recognition
credited for implementing significant front-end enhancements aimed at streamlining patient intake
reducing bottlenecks and ensuring that those in need of urgent care are seen quickly
“This award is a testament to Fort Washington Medical Center’s commitment to delivering exceptional emergency care while focusing on safety and quality
to ensure patients receive the best care possible,” said Dr
USACS regional vice president and an emergency medicine physician with the Adventist HealthCare system
“No one should feel like they have to leave the emergency department without the care they need,” added Kalaria
As the largest physician-owned provider of integrated acute care medicine
USACS partners with hospitals around the country
to enhance emergency and acute care services
Adventist HealthCare Fort Washington Medical Center has undergone a remarkable transformation as it continues working to reduce healthcare disparities in southern Prince George’s County
offering residents medical care close to home so they don’t have to travel to other Maryland counties
the hospital conducted process mapping to identify bottlenecks in patient flow
It led to the implementation of a Vertical Care Unit (VCU)
reduce wait times and provide faster access to care
Unlike the traditional approach that relies solely on bedside treatment
the hospital’s VCU allows medical care to be administered to patients with less severe conditions who can remain upright and sit in chairs
patients are moved to a “results pending area,” where they wait for their test results
The goal of the VCU is to have patients evaluated by a doctor and awaiting results within 30 minutes or less
maximizing space and getting patients home faster
“We’re sitting at the top in terms of our throughput and increase in patient satisfaction,” said Dr
who joined Fort Washington Medical Center in June of last year
Reducing wait times in the emergency department is critical for hospitals
operational efficiency and community trust
the hospital faced significantly longer wait times
Longer waits increase the likelihood that patients will leave without being seen
leading to dissatisfaction and a higher percentage of patients leaving untreated
“The number of patients who left without being seen went down from double digits to now world-class,” McCray said
“It really speaks to the great job that this hospital is doing.”
The VCU accommodates patients with a range of medical conditions
from ankle sprains to abdominal pain and more
nurses and ancillary staff came together to innovate a solution and succeeded,” said McCray
“It has been incredibly gratifying and uplifting.”
Patients who arrive at Fort Washington Medical Center for emergency care are currently seen in under one hour, while the average ER wait time in Maryland is more than four hours, according to a report from Maryland Matters.
The VCU wasn’t the only factor in reducing wait times at Adventist HealthCare Fort Washington Medical Center
which included adjusting clinician shift schedules to ensure optimal staffing during peak hours
collaborating with nursing to develop effective protocols and providing ongoing education to all staff to align everyone with the hospital’s goals
“It’s really important that patients have an excellent experience and let others know that we are providing exceptional care here,” McCray said
“If everyone is invested in the success of this hospital and we avoid siloed efforts
Fort Washington Medical Center faces the challenge of expanding capacity to meet the region’s rapidly growing healthcare demands
By fast-tracking patients and addressing conditions before they get worse
the hospital can ensure that more people receive prompt treatment
It’s an approach that simultaneously improves patient care and bolsters the hospital’s reputation within the community
encouraging more local residents to seek medical attention when they really need it
As Fort Washington Medical Center expands its capabilities and strives for excellence
its efforts to improve the overall patient experience are proving to be impactful
McCray said the future looks bright as the hospital continues on its upward trajectory
“Morale is high and there is a drive for continued improvement,” McCray said
“We are overwhelmingly grateful for this opportunity to serve the Fort Washington community.”

This episode we visit the National Park Service park - Big Bone Lick State Historic Site, part of the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail in Union
Welcome back to - Fort Washington at Cincinnati Ohio Part 5 - by Robert Ralston Jones
This episode we find General Harmar working on a special mission for the folks back in Philadelphia. The mission is to recover "Big Bones" of ancient animals found at Big Bone Lick in Kentucky and carefully transport them back to people like Caspar Wistar for further analysis and for sketching images of the bones
or natural mineral deposits where animals gathered to consume essential salts
played a crucial role in both the survival of early American pioneers and the prehistoric megafauna of the Pleistocene era
For pioneers settling in the Ohio River Valley and surrounding regions
salt was an essential commodity for preserving food
Natural salt licks became critical resources
were frequented by pioneers who boiled the mineral-rich water to extract salt for personal use and trade
These locations often became gathering points for hunters and travelers
as well as contested areas in conflicts between settlers and Native Americans
the same salt licks attracted massive prehistoric creatures during the Ice Age
and other megafauna regularly visited these sites to consume essential minerals
due to the marshy conditions surrounding many salt licks
these heavy creatures sometimes became trapped in the mud
their bones accumulated and were naturally preserved in the mineral-rich deposits
When pioneers arrived in places like Big Bone Lick
they were stunned to find enormous fossilized bones protruding from the earth
often speculated that these remains belonged to giant biblical creatures or prehistoric monsters
and other Ice Age giants that had perished at the site thousands of years earlier
helped spark early scientific interest in North America’s prehistoric past
Big Bone Lick became a significant site for early paleontology
with notable figures such as Thomas Jefferson and William Clark (of the Lewis and Clark Expedition) expressing great interest in the fossils found there
The site remains one of the most important Pleistocene fossil deposits in the country

subject to limited exemptions for religious or medical reasons
Four former employees of Westminster Village in Spanish Fort, Alabama, alleged religious discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination and a hostile work environment in a federal lawsuit in 2022
Parent companies Act Retirement–Life and Presbyterian Retirement Corp.
the owner and operator of Westminster Village
The four former workers said that they “possess sincere religious beliefs that their body is a temple” and that they should not be inoculated or compelled to be inoculated with any “experimental foreign substance or biological / medical materials that will alter the aspects of their human body.”
they alleged that Acts failed to reasonably accommodate their religious beliefs under Title VII
Acts countered that it was a religious organization not subject to liability for religious discrimination
that the plaintiffs did not hold sincere religious beliefs against the vaccine
and that the employees’ exemption requests created an undue hardship for the company
A judge wrote that Acts was founded by a church—the Church of the Open Door—as a Christian organization to serve the health and spiritual needs of older adults
Although Acts no longer is financially supported or managed by the founding church
the company adheres to the original Christian mission in word and practice
adding that Acts requires its directors and employees to adhere to that mission in addressing the spiritual and health needs of its residents
“The law declares that such an organization is exempt from religious discrimination claims under Title VII,” the judge wrote
“The health and safety of our residents, team members and communities is always top priority for the Acts organization, as it was during the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic,” an Acts spokesman told McKnight’s Senior Living
“We remain committed to treating all individuals with respect and fairness while upholding our mission to provide exceptional service to those we serve.”

There are $12 and $15 cocktails and a decent wine list
