employee broke my fear of snakes when he put a snake around my neck for a radio broadcast But once the snake and I got comfortable I walked around with the boa constrictor around my neck for about 20 Grace Brenner and Clare Conzelmann are part of three pairs of sisters that have led the Eagles to a Division 2 quarterfinal .st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Hugh Bernreuter | hbernreu@mlive.comFRANKENMUTH MI – When Joe Jacobs talks about the family atmosphere on the Frankenmuth girls basketball team The Eagles take a 22-4 record into a Division 2 quarterfinal game against Gladstone at 7 p.m Tuesday at Cheboygan High School with a roster full of similar names Frankenmuth features three pairs of sisters: Clare and Lucy Conzelmann Rosemary and Grace Brenner and Mya and Macy Donovan and it’s been a blessing for us this year,” Jacobs said “And that’s because of the families they come from and that makes it special because there’s potential for issues with that many sisters All three pairs come from basketball families Kate (Johnson) Conzelmann played for Frankenmuth’s 1992 Class B state championship team Mya and Macy Donovan’s mother is Tessa (Taylor) Donovan who played for Freeland’s 1998 Class C state championship team Their father is Frankenmuth boys basketball coach Andy Donovan And the Brenners have watched their brothers also star at Frankenmuth “The apple doesn’t fall from far from the tree,” Jacobs said “The Donovans come from a basketball household The Brenners have two fantastic parents and are from an athletic family they are supportive of their daughters and the team You’re not going to hear from them complaining about something and it’s been even better than we expected.” “Sometimes we get mad at each other like when we’re on opposite teams in scrimmages,” Clare Conzelmann said “It can get a little messy and sometimes it goes a little overboard “But I always have someone to talk to about basketball at home I always have that someone on the team with a special connection I think we have a deeper connection than a lot of teams I would rather have it this way than any other way.” Clare Conzelmann is a senior starter who has signed to play for Lake Superior State while Lucy Conzelmann is a sophomore and key player off the bench and we’ve played basketball together for a really long time,” Lucy Conzelmann said “There might be instances where we get really mad with each other When things get heated in practice and we need to calm down with Rosemary Brenner a senior post player and Grace Brenner a sophomore point guard “It keeps things entertaining on the court I’m not going to lie,” Rosemary Brenner said Everybody has those days when ‘I just don’t want to speak to her right now.’ But we get it and move on Sometimes there are times when I don’t think she’s listening to me But that definitely goes the other way sometimes too.” she has more control over the basketball game than most little sisters “Sometimes we disagree but a lot of times it’s because we see the court differently because I’m a point guard and she’s more of a post player,” Grace Brenner said “Our parents raised us to be problem-solvers so it’s not like an argument where you’re trying to be right and you want the other person to be wrong It’s more like we’re coming together from different sides to find the best solution.” Mya Donovan is a junior post player who comes off the bench while Macy Donovan starts as a 6-foot freshman “Me and my sister have always gotten along great … she pulls me out of my comfort zone,” Mya Donovan said She’s played a lot of basketball on her own so it’s really cool being able to play on the same team with her.” The little sisters also benefited by following their older sisters “Having all the sisters is great because of the chemistry we have,” Macy Donovan said I’m pretty competitive and things can happen but Mya is the person that will make me laugh “I would play up in age while I was growing up and I think the other little sisters did too So we were always playing with our older sisters against older players I’ve played on the same team as Clare and Lucy and Grace when I was younger Those relationships will change next season Rosemary Brenner and Clare Conzelmann will graduate leaving just the Donovans carrying the sisters banner but we’ll have to learn how to build it with each other instead of having our sisters around to help us,” Macy Donovan said but with the relationships we’ve built this season it advances to the Division 2 semifinals at 5:30 p.m Friday against the Goodrich-Tecumseh quarterfinal winner All semifinals and finals are at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center “One of the other positives about having the sisters is that they’re great leaders which helps us out as coaches,” Jacobs said “It always helps hearing something from one of your peers instead of your coaches “All six of those sisters do well in the classroom but there haven’t been any with these sisters Winner advances to semifinal game at 5:30 p.m winner of quarterfinal between Goodrich (23-3) and Tecumseh (24-1) Winner advances to semifinal game at noon Thursday semifinal.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Hugh Bernreuter | hbernreu@mlive.comMOUNT PLEASANT Frankenmuth finally broke through the Grand Rapids Catholic Central roadblock But it took the Man in Black – and blue – to lead them scored three touchdowns – including Frankenmuth’s first and last of the game – as the Eagles held off the defending state champion for a 42-35 win in a Division 5 semifinal Saturday at Mount Pleasant High School but he plays with a big heart,” Frankenmuth coach Phil Martin said He was kind of nicked up to finish the game he made a big play to convert a first down and keep the chains moving and keep the clock moving “We had quite a few players on that last drive make big plays We’re hoping to get healthy for next week.” The 13-0 Eagles play for the Division 5 state championship at 4 p.m Saturday at Ford Field against 11-1 Pontiac Notre Dame Prep Frankenmuth had lost all four meetings with Grand Rapids Catholic Central including back-to-back 35-0 shutout losses in the 2023 and 2021 semifinals Frankenmuth didn’t have to worry about another shutout Tedford took the pitch and ran 77 yards for a touchdown and a Frankenmuth lead that touchdown was easier than I expected,” Tedford said “The linemen did a great job of blocking it perfectly The big run led to a dominating first half with the Eagles running for 325 yards in the half “The very first play was something that we’ve seen on film but we knew we had to take care of the linebackers,” Martin said “Their linebackers are some of the best in the state and we were able to turn the corner and get north and south quick.” Catholic Central answered with a 2-yard run by Dale Grant Jr. but Frankenmuth came back with a 3-yard TD run by Tedford and a 93-yard run by Aiden Labissoniere for a 21-7 first-quarter lead I didn’t have the guys ready to play in the first quarter from the first play of the game,” Catholic Central coach Todd Kolster said “Our guys know we just have to do our jobs We got caught up too much early on from a defensive perspective and offensive perspective just overthinking things a little bit too much.” Frankenmuth tacked on a 65-yard TD run by Lleyton Hoard for a 28-7 halftime lead with the defense coming up with a TD-saving sack on the final play of the first half after the Cougars reached the Frankenmuth 7-yard line An 11-yard TD pass from Spencer to Jamison Williams cut the Frankenmuth lead to 28-21 “They made some adjustments in the second half and packed the box a little more,” Martin said I was pretty proud of them to be able to do that.” Frankenmuth was able to answer after Tedford ran for a 17-yard gain on fourth-and-2 Catholic Central came back on the first drive of the fourth quarter scoring on a 17-yard pass from Spencer to Ace Notte to cut the Frankenmuth lead to 34-28 with 8:56 remaining in the game But the Eagles had some answers of their own putting together a drive that consumed more than seven minutes with Hoard hitting Caleb Morgan for an 8-yard pass on third-and-7 Tedford added an 8-yard run on third-and-6 to set up a 4-yard TD run Morgan ran in the 2-point conversion for a 42-28 lead with 1:39 remaining That was plenty of time for Catholic Central to score one touchdown Catholic Central took a little more than a minute to score on a 30-yard pass from Spencer to Grant Jr to cut the lead to 42-37 with 27.8 seconds remaining But Frankenmuth recovered the onside kick to clinch the victory they executed at a higher level than we did and that’s why they were able to capitalize in those situations Catholic Central ends the season with an 8-5 record that included a memorable playoff run that included a pair of thrilling wins over Grand Rapids West Catholic it can come back to bite you,” Kolster said but at the end of the day I’ve got to do a better job.” Frankenmuth held the Catholic Central run game to just 38 yards Michigan State commit Derrick Simmons and Carson Bouvy had 1.5 sacks each including eight to the 6-foot-4 Williams for 195 yards “He’s one of the best football players in the state of Michigan and he’s never gotten enough credit,” Kolster said and he’s the all-time leading receiver in our school’s history But what he’s done on the football field is pretty amazing.” and when he made that catch in the back of the end zone all 200 pounds of him came down right on top of me,” Tedford said you almost have to try to go for the ball on the way down because you’re not going to reach him at his high point I think we did a pretty good job against him “The quarterback put the ball in the right spot for him to make plays and he’s a heck of a receiver,” Martin said “Our kids had pretty good coverage on him all day We were close to knocking a couple of the ball out Frankenmuth’s ground game gained 463 yards with three 100-yard rushers Tedford finished with 147 yards on 10 carries Labissoniere added 113 yards on six carries Hoard also completed all three of his passes for 18 yards Brady Lipka led the Frankenmuth defense with 11 tackles Tanner Kroeger and Tedford added seven tackles each Frankenmuth will make its third trip to the state finals with the seniors making their second trip to the finals with four semifinal appearances “This is a group of kids that has gotten to experience quite a bit,” Martin said “For them to be able to go back as seniors is a big deal Tedford is only a junior but has a certain mystique about him thanks to his first name The Eagles’ pre-game music even includes a Cash classic “My parents were big fans … that’s why they named me Cash,” Tedford said Ready to walk the line into the state final ring of fire If you would like your local high school sports news delivered free to your inbox daily, click here and
