defined by accessories: his gleaming top hat
and dandyish monocle are all totems of both persnickety good taste and the febrile effort behind chasing it
He is equal parts fashion critic and fashion victim
squinting at the world through an eyepiece that was already passé by the time he was created
and one that set the enduring tone for the magazine’s dual-minded approach to writing about consumer goods
The New Yorker’s fashion-and-beauty reportage has walked the thin runway between seriousness and silliness
respect for lovely things and skepticism about how they’re sold
and most who tackled it were not sartorial obsessives but
put a recent Vassar graduate named Lois Long in charge of a chatty shopping column called Fifth Avenue
presumably to encompass other promenades.) Long
who also wrote a night-life column under the pseudonym Lipstick
had little experience writing about clothing
but she more than made up for it in panache
Her early pieces feature an exuberant cascade of opinions about what constitutes good—or tragic—style
badger-fur collars; bad: perfumed cigarettes
and sought to encourage both appreciation and discernment
wrote that Long “combined two rare ingredients: an ability to be perpetually stimulated
blended with an ability to be perpetually critical.”
for which she embedded at the Estée Lauder company as it launched a perfume called Beautiful
What makes the piece notable is its exhaustive
generous attention to what might seem—to some—a frivolous subject
for whom Fraser reserves her best descriptions
(Lauder enters rooms like “some splendid insect queen”; at the airport
she waits for luggage “like a terrier at a rabbit hole.”) Fraser is a master of the stylish adjective
often inventing her own compound words: “At the ruby-lit
wintery-velvety Christmas luncheon,” she writes
woman-to-woman quotations as if they were hors d’œuvres.” The article is sensually potent; Fraser sniffs “vermicelli-like strings of vetiver” and details a corporate party at which saleswomen
“rustling like pale water lilies in full-skirted chiffon
or spangled net.” This is delectable prose
ever aware that the pomp is in service of a product for which demand has been calculatingly manufactured
told me recently that the piece was a bold risk for Lauder
who had never let a journalist peer so far inside the kingdom
Granting access “involved summit-level seriousness and tense discussion.” But
inasmuch as the piece captured something vivid about collective desire
“I was always terribly ashamed to be a fashion writer
because everyone else was writing on serious subjects,” Fraser told me
Shawn told me that I would not write about fashion forever
But I’m sorry now that I ever felt ashamed
it’s a very interesting way of observing society.” ♦

2025The series of Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon were best-selling novels in their own right long before the STARZ TV series came along

Vancouver police confirmed that a 30-year-old Vancouver man was subdued by the crowd and arrested
Kai-ji Adam Lo was charged Sunday afternoon with eight counts of murder
He had dozens of past interactions with police related to his deteriorating mental health
VPD interim Chief Steve Rai called the deadly attack “the darkest day in our city’s history.” The victims were aged from five to 65 and some have not been identified
as thousands of members of Vancouver’s Filipino community gathered for an important cultural celebration
the actions of a single person shattered our collective sense of safety
It is impossible to overstate how many lives have been impacted forever by this lone individual
There are many unanswered questions about why this horrific crime happened,” he said
Rai said the suspect had a significant number of prior interactions with police and health care professionals because of his mental health problems
While police haven’t determined a motive for the attack
he stressed that it is not related to terrorism

Abigail Andiso was with friends nearby when she heard two loud bangs
which was lined with food trucks and stalls
Some were already dead on the spot,” said Andiso
saw a toddler injured and another child with an open scalp wound
Many of the bodies were twisted grotesquely
“There was a lady with her eyes staring up
One person was holding her hand trying to comfort her,” she recounted
Rai said that because “dozens more (victims) are injured
some seriously … the number of dead could rise in the coming days or weeks.”
“The most critically injured were transported by ambulance to nine different hospitals throughout Metro Vancouver
and we want to extend our profound gratitude to all of the medical professionals who have worked throughout the night to care for the victims.”
Health officials confirmed overnight Saturday that at least 26 individuals were taken to hospital with injuries
the status of those 26 patients was unknown
though police have said 11 people have died
while a 2-year-old remains in critical condition
New Westminster school district has identified Kira Salim
a teacher-counsellor at Fraser River Middle School and New Westminster Secondary School
as one of the victims in the April 26 Lapu Lapu Day tragedy
B.C.’s Health Ministry issued an update Sunday night saying 32 people were seen at several hospitals in the Lower Mainland and 17 remained in care
including some in critical and serious condition
The driver of the SUV was taken into custody and was telling bystanders he was “sorry.” Sources say he appears to have been suffering from mental health issues
Fraser Street between 41st and 49th remained closed to allow room for the police investigation; TransLink buses continued to be rerouted to Main Street
A 24-hour support centre was set up at Douglas Park Community Centre to help connect people with loved ones who were attending the festival
ICBC president and CEO David Wong said in a statement that anyone injured during the incident is pre-approved for treatments
Counselling is also available to anyone who was impacted
including witnesses and family of those injured or killed
Videos posted to social media show the immediate aftermath
with bodies strewn across the road and being tended to by first responders and bystanders
Victims were rushed to several local hospitals
where staff were told to prepare for mass casualties
Yoseb Vardeh is the co-owner of the food truck Bao Buns
which had been stationed at the festival all day
Vardeh spoke through tears to describe what had been “an incredible day” that ended in shock and terror
It didn’t make any sense to me because there’s still people here
“And then I look up and there’s people flying
Vardeh said the final performance had just ended and that many food trucks
had stayed past the event’s closing time to serve last-minute customers who were still enjoying the evening
came from the direction of nearby John Oliver Secondary School
and speeded up before driving down 43rd Avenue
which had been turned into a pedestrian-only area flanked on both sides by food trucks
I looked down the road and there’s just bodies everywhere,” said Vardeh
Vardeh said he’s unsure how the truck was stopped but said he saw a man being arrested and that police worked quickly to cordon off the area
Vardeh said the man was telling bystanders to stop filming him
who is half Filipino and was attending the festival for his second year
“I didn’t break down until I got home to my family just five minutes ago,” he said
“This is something that happens in the States
and they just couldn’t believe what was happening
walking around and they didn’t know what the f— to do
Another woman who didn’t want to be identified said she was at the festival doing cleanup and helping fold tents when she got a panicked call from her daughter
Someone is driving and trying to run over a lot of people.'”
She saw some people run north toward John Oliver Secondary and headed that way
Underneath the food trucks there were bodies there
The people who lived in the area were outside and everyone was so shocked.”
Another ambulance came and paramedics came out
One witness told her a car drove straight into the crowd and did not stop
All that could be heard as it happened was “thud-thud-thud” as the tires ran over people
The woman saw a black car with the driver’s door open
she saw police officers chasing after someone
Provincial Health Services Authority spokesman Brian Twaites confirmed more than 22 ambulances and associated vehicles were dispatched to the incident on Saturday just after 8 p.m.
with both primary and advanced care paramedics
supervisors and special teams responding to the scene
“We provided emergency medical treatment and transport for 26 patients to hospital in conditions ranging from critical to serious,” said Twaites
“We continue to work with our partners at the Vancouver Police Department
the Vancouver Fire Department on this incident.”
Vancouver police 100 officers were actively working on the case
Rai said that most of the festival took place on school grounds and was therefore not accessible by vehicle
The suspect drove along 43rd from the west when he struck his victims
Rai was asked why dump trucks used at other festivals were not in place for Lapu Lapu
He said there was a risk assessment done after meeting with organizers and city officials and it was determined they weren’t necessary
“We determined through consultations with the City of Vancouver and festival organizers that dedicated police officers and heavy vehicle barricades would not be deployed at the festival site,” he said
“While I’m confident the joint risk assessment and public safety plan was sound
We will be working with our partners at the City of Vancouver to review all of the circumstances surrounding the planning of this event.”
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim said he is “heartbroken.”
I’m heartbroken and I’m angry,” Sim said on Sunday afternoon
He said a full review would be conducted into safety measures at the roughly 3,000 public events held in the city each year
Sim also called for the federal and provincial governments to work quickly to ensure mandatory care for mentally ill persons unable to take care of themselves
“Mental health is the underlying issue in this tragedy and there has to be change,” he said
I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today’s Lapu Lapu Day event. We will work to provide more information as soon as we can, but at this time @VancouverPD have confirmed that there are a number of fatalities and multiple injuries
who had been at the event earlier in the day
returned to the area when he heard what had happened
He told Postmedia that the day had been a fantastic one for the Filipino community and the Vancouver community in general
“It’s just a horrific act of violence that has befallen this event and community,” he said
Premier David Eby confirmed he had spoken briefly with Prime Minister Mark Carney about the incident and that his focus Sunday “continues to be on supporting and connecting with community members.”
Eby reiterated the need “to wrap our arms around the Filipino community to support this incredibly important community and moment of real
our focus is on supporting the families of the victims and the victims who are injured and struggling right now in hospital
to make sure that they have what they need,” he said
“There are so many questions that British Columbians have about how that could take place
we’ll take the action that’s necessary to ensure that it can’t happen again.”
Shocked & heartbroken to hear of the lives lost & those injured at the Lapu Lapu festival. Police are investigating & a suspect is in custody. our thoughts are with the victims and their families – and Vancouver’s Filipino community
Liberal Leader Mark Carney thanked first responders in a statement shared online
adding he was “devastated to hear about the horrific events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver earlier this evening.”
Carney said he had plans to be in touch with Eby and Sim later in the day
Those families are living every family’s nightmare,” he said
“And to them and to the many others who were injured
to the Filipino Canadian community and to everyone in the broader Lower Mainland Vancouver
I would like to offer my deepest condolences and my wishes for strength and compassion in this tragic time

Seven additional ambulances were deployed Saturday evening
along with two supervisor vehicles to help address additional call volumes
BCEHS said the fatal incident near East 43rd and Fraser would be prioritized

Vancouver police said there would be no changes to their operational plan for Sunday’s Vancouver Sun Run
which typically draws large crowds downtown annually
Officials said a robust deployment will continue as planned

Alice Fraser thought she was being paranoid until her lawyer advised her jokes about Donald Trump and Elon Musk could be scrutinised at US airport
An award-winning Australian comedian has cancelled a planned trip to the US after receiving legal advice that she could be stopped at the border due to her previous jokes about the Trump administration
Alice Fraser, who has appeared on Australia’s ABC and the BBC and toured internationally, was due to head to New York in the first week of May to promote her recently published book.
Fraser sought advice from an immigration lawyer
“I asked [the lawyer] what I thought was a ridiculous question – that I do political satire and have a fair few jokes floating around on Elon Musk and Donald Trump
and whether that would be a risk,” Fraser told Guardian Australia
but she said it might [pose a risk] and they’d almost certainly Google me
She said while the vast majority of people will be able to travel in and out … they’re definitely doing increased scrutinising
but the vision of me being there with a baby strapped to me and held up and hassled
According to immigration law group Reeves “the US government is relying on social media screening more and more during the vetting process to gather extensive information”
noting an online presence offers insights into “interests
associations and potential security concerns”

Foreigners have had their devices searched at the US border and been denied entry, including a French scientist who had messages on his phone critical of Donald Trump
Fraser has been a regular critic of Trump as a contributor to political podcasts and radio shows, telling the Sydney Morning Herald in 2020: “I wouldn’t take an IOU from Trump if he wrote it on the money he owed me.”
She appeared at the Melbourne International comedy festival this week as part of the satirical political podcast A Rational Fear – billed as a “federal election special” or a “how to evade deportation” special
Fraser lived and worked in the US on an internship visa more than a decade ago
She said the planned May visit was a “real opportunity” to promote her book
but travellers now “don’t know what to expect”
this country which has presented itself as very stable
is now behaving very unpredictably,” she said
“People who have always been OK will probably still be OK but people on the margins will be discouraged – and that’s disappointing
Free daily newsletterOur Australian afternoon update breaks down the key stories of the day
telling you what’s happening and why it matters
According to Smartraveller, which provides advice on behalf of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, an ESTA or valid visa allows travellers to board a US-bound plane or request entry at a land border but doesn’t guarantee entry to the US.
Read moreSmartraveller notes customs and border protection have strict requirements and “broad powers” for temporary detainment or deportation when assessing eligibility
“Officials may ask to inspect your electronic devices
“You may be held at the port of entry or a nearby detention facility
The Australian government cannot intervene on your behalf
and our ability to provide consular assistance in these circumstances may be limited.”
Even if granted entry, the US may keep devices for months if a traveller refuses to unlock them
Fraser said she wouldn’t stop making jokes but she also wanted to return to the US
“I will go to the America that will have me, when it’s no longer reasonable for a visa lawyer to say I should purge my social media before I go there because a joke about Elon Musk might be considered hostile to the nation,” she said
Two-time Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce plans to make the 2025 track season the last of her legendary career
A rep for Fraser-Pryce confirmed those plans on Thursday, shortly after a minute-long career highlight video was posted on Fraser-Pryce’s Instagram
It ended with the words “unfinished business.”
Previously, Fraser-Pryce, 38, said “one more year left” in a January interview with a Fox affiliate
Fraser-Pryce, whose seven combined Olympic and world 100m titles are the most in history, first announced in 2023 that she planned to make the Paris Games her final Olympics and that she wanted 2024 to be her “last hurrah.”
Fraser-Pryce advanced out of her first round in the 100m
She did not publicly announce why she withdrew and has not raced since
Fraser-Pryce made her global championship debut at the 2008 Beijing Olympics where she won the first of back-to-back 100m gold medals
She became the first Jamaican woman to win an Olympic 100m title
She also won five world championships in the 100m
including two after becoming a mom in 2017

a judge has ruled that Fraser Michael Bohm of Malibu is ordered to stand trial on four counts of murder and four counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence
The charges stem from a high-speed crash on Oct
that claimed the lives of four Pepperdine University seniors — all members of the Alpha Phi sorority — as they stood on the shoulder of Pacific Coast Highway
The now 23-year-old Bohm will return to Superior Court in Van Nuys on July 1 for arraignment.
Crash witnesses and law enforcement officers testified this week in a preliminary hearing before Judge Diego H
Edber found there was sufficient evidence to order a trial.
Deputy District Attorney Nathan Bartos argued that the crash was not a tragic accident
but the foreseeable consequence of reckless driving
“He consciously decided to get that vehicle up to the speed of 104 miles per hour,” Bartos told the court
has argued the accident was the result of road rage against his client
Kraut said he was in court to seek justice
not to have his client freed from any responsibility for the crash

My dad was admitted to Eagle Ridge Hospital through the Emergency Room
We want to extend a huge thank you to James
He was a reassuring presence when my dad arrived and checked in with us several times throughout the evening
James was happy to answer our questions and took the time to explain anything we didn’t understand
I want to give a special thank you to Nurse Holly from the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit at Langley Memorial Hospital
She went above and beyond to help and make my time in the hospital as comfortable as possible — she even brought me a popsicle
I recently had emergency surgery for my appendix and had a truly wonderful experience at Ridge Meadows Hospital
I stayed for three days and was even impressed by the cleaning staff — each time a patient was discharged
they immediately came in and did an amazing job
Bacon saw my mother during her three-month admission at Royal Columbian Hospital
She arranged for a capability assessment and truly listened and took action based on my concerns about my mother’s decompensation
Bacon’s dedication — spending extra time with my mother daily for a week — I’m certain we would not have achieved the positive outcome we did
Thank you to all the nurses and doctors who cared for my son during his stay at Surrey Memorial Hospital

The 38-year-old athletics star began her new season in April
opening another chapter in a career defined by resilience and dominance
Picture by 2024 Getty ImagesBy Evelyn Watta“I didn’t know what to do with myself,” said sprint star Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce as she rewatched a video of her golden journey at Beijing 2008
That was her 21-year-old self, when she made history as the first woman from the Caribbean to win 100m gold.
the Jamaican has indeed come of age and knows exactly what she’s doing
The three-time Olympic gold medallist returned to the track in 2025 with “unfinished business.”
Remarkably, her trajectory spanning over 18 years has never lost pace. On 24 April, the 38-year-old clocked a wind-aided 10.94 seconds to win her season opener in Kingston — her first 100m since 2 August and a powerful statement of intent in what is expected to be her final year of competition.
as she watched a replay of herself lining up for her 100m qualifying race at the iconic Beijing National stadium
I remember crying…that was the first time I have ever cried before a race
That profound moment she was referring to turned to an intense satisfaction before the Olympic final
From winning her first major individual title on the biggest stage
Fraser-Pryce went on to dominate her races
achieving a rare longevity in women's sprinting
She’s the most decorated 100m sprinter of all time and the third-fastest ever with her 10.60 from 2021
just one of many high points in an astonishing career that truly took off after the 2007 World Championships
Japan marked the turning point for a disinterested but hugely talented teenager
She hadn’t seriously considered becoming a sprinter until that year
Earning world silver as a reserve on the 4x100m relay team was the beginning of a journey defined by resilience — one that’s never been lost on her
It’s not by chance or it’s not some random thing
Not many expected her to return to the track after withdrawing from the Olympics
But one thing Fraser-Pryce has mastered is the art of the comeback
Her first world 100m title at the 2009 World Championships came after a season blighted by injury and appendix surgery
she returned to the track just nine months after giving birth to her son via emergency caesarean
but it made her more confident and faster — as she proved a year later by sprinting to 100m gold and running the second leg of Jamaica’s 4x100m relay team
The last two seasons have been more about ‘understanding the power of her mind over her body’
she continued to compete despite battling a persistent knee injury
collecting a bronze in the 100m and three silvers — one in the 200m and two in the 4x100m relay
The sprint legend showed once again why she can never be written off
securing a quota spot for Paris 2024 with a third-place finish at the Jamaican Trials
underlining that it will be her last Olympics
“It's crazy to even think about the fact that it has been five straight Olympic Games
about how God has been good to me and how he has kept me so I'm really looking forward to the experience
I'm giving 100% at all times and that's what I'm looking forward to.”
She only lined up for her qualifying race at the Stade de France
and after withdrawing from the semi-finals
many believed that was her farewell to the sport
now counting down the days to her next race — at the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou
told Olympics.com on how she’s managed to leave an indelible mark in sport
“Time will honour your greatness," the five-time world champion proclaimed as she embarked on what could be the final year of her legendary career — ending it where it all began, hopefully as a world medallist once again.

Mat Fraser has won the CrossFit Games more times than any other male athlete – five
Given this is a competition to find the ‘fittest on earth’
many have dubbed him ‘the fittest man in history’
But despite the impressive physical feats he’s capable of, from handstand walking to heaving 170kg over his head, his go-to workout has surprisingly wide appeal
Having tried it for the first time a few years ago
I genuinely believe it has something to offer all comers
and it’s now a regular fixture in my training plans
The workout is a 40-minute EMOM – an acronym that stands for every minute
you do a set number of repetitions of a specified exercise
then rest for the remainder of the 60 seconds
and you should take it in turns to do each one
The length can be shortened, as can the movements you include, weights you use and number of reps you do, allowing the workout to be scaled to suit any fitness level
“There’s a guarantee that you’re going to be sweating, breathing hard and challenging yourself, no matter what you do,” Fraser says in a recent video for his online coaching company, Hard Work Pays Off
Set a 40-minute timer and complete 10 rounds of the following:
An EMOM workout does exactly what it says on the tin
It challenges you to perform a prescribed amount of work within each minute
rest for whatever remains of the 60 seconds
The general template of this workout is to have something cardio-based in minutes one and three
something gymnastic or skills-focussed in minute two
Fraser says he usually tries to finish each minute’s work within 40 seconds
giving him time to transition to the next exercise
he likes to wrap things up within 20 seconds “so I have some time to catch my breath
grab a sip of water and towel off before getting back on the bike”

Time: If you don’t have 40 minutes available
or struggle to complete the workout above in full
you can adjust the length of the session to any multiple of four
this format will still deliver perks in half that time
Reps: Adjust the target number of reps in each round to one that you can complete within 40 seconds (or 20 seconds
nor should it be an all out effort during the early rounds
Weights: For the heavy exercise in particular
focus on finding a weight that is challenging
but still allows you to complete all prescribed reps with good form within roughly 20 seconds
Exercises: If you can’t perform some of the exercises above
you can swap them for more accessible ones with a similar stimulus
double-unders could be swapped for standard skips or pogo jumps
and dumbbell box step-overs could be replaced by box step-ups
then you can lower the height you’re stepping up to to further adjust the difficulty
If you want to practice different exercises
you can also substitute them in – for example
dumbbell deadlifts instead of box step-overs
and pull-ups or burpees instead of double-unders

As a fitness writer, my mission is to help readers find fun, interesting and effective ways to get (or stay) in shape. To do this, I’ll often assume the role of lab rat, taking things for a spin to see if they’re worth sharing. And of all the fitness tests I’ve tried, from running my first Hyrox race to training like an Olympian
weights and duration to fit your fitness level
as well as the equipment you have available and your fitness goals
Want to build muscle? Add five to 30 reps of a press, row, squat or deadlift at a challenging weight into one or two of the minutes
Looking to give your heart and lungs a good workout
Swap the heavy exercise for a bonus cardio-focussed one like a rowing machine or SkiErg
I’ve incorporated 40-minute EMOMs into my training since I first found out about them a few years ago
So when Fraser shared a fresh one (above) via his online coaching company
I did make a few adjustments before diving in
For the first few rounds I was able to finish each exercise within the guideline 40-second time cap
my body felt like it had plenty left in the tank
It was when I reached round five that the workout became a different beast
my pace on the Assault Bike and shuttle runs plummeted
and during the box-step-overs the dumbbells suddenly felt significantly heavier than they had done 20 minutes prior
My calf muscles also started asking for a break from all the skipping
seemed to have a similar experience: “The first three or four rounds don’t feel terrible
I knew I still had almost 50 per cent of the workout to go
how am I going to feel in 10 minutes’ time?”
The next few rounds were a slog and there was an undeniable temptation to call it a day
the fog cleared and the end suddenly seemed within touching distance
and I knuckled down to finish the last three rounds without taking any shortcuts

Moving consistently for 40 minutes is inevitably going to have health benefits
You’re raising your heart rate and breathing hard
elevating calorie burn and working on your cardiorespiratory fitness (aka
the ability of your heart and lungs to deliver ample oxygen to the working muscles)
But because of the 40-minute EMOM’s make-up, it can have sneaky bonus benefits too. If one of the elements is a gymnastic-based exercise
If one of the elements involves lifting something heavy enough to present a challenge
Treating some stations as sprints may improve speed and power
and by the time you’ve done 10 rounds of an exercise it’s likely your muscular endurance will be tested as well
In short: it’s an efficient way to train multiple facets of fitness at once
It may not be as effective as dedicating an hour to any one pursuit
cardiovascular endurance or building muscle
but with only so many hours in a day it’s a savvy way to tick multiple boxes
Fraser concocted this formula with the sole focus of improving his CrossFit performance
I just couldn’t do them when I was breathing heavily,” he explains
“I didn’t feel like I could catch my breath or recover during them
So I started doing a 500m row and 25 pull-ups
“I noticed my technique was starting to fail by round three or four and the row was taking a long time
so I decided to chop it down so I could cycle it a little bit faster
I think it started with a 200m row and 10-15 pull-ups
and then I realised my muscular fatigue was starting to build up.”
“I wanted to put more time between those stations
so I added in another cardio station and another technical station.”
Completing 10 rounds allowed him to accumulate plenty of practise of reps
And that’s how the 40-minute EMOM was born

not even $11,000 a month can buy you dignity at the end of your life After watching my father’s struggle in a system that values profit over compassion
I wonder: how much longer will we accept a future where most of us lose our sense of human worth in old age
View image in fullscreen Illustration: Rita Liu/The Guardian/Fraser Family/GettyThe last time I visited my father
I walked into his $11,000-a-month room in a posh assisted living residence and found him curled up on the floor
a retired physician and lifelong outdoorsman
“I fell about 20 minutes ago and no one has come.”
who came and briskly hoisted him into his easy chair
where he’d spent most of his time staring out the window at a slice of the mountains
I hugged Dad and noticed he was bleeding profusely from a skin tear on his arm
The nurse hadn’t so much as given him a quick once-over
wearing the same stained and rumpled shirt he’d had on for most of the week
even though until his recent move to the facility he had always been impeccably groomed
He had already fallen several times while at the facility
often while trying to make it to the toilet when no one came to help him
This indifferent care belied the promises of the establishment’s website
which portrayed a warm and engaging environment where caregivers chatted with residents and offered companionship and comfort: “Your care team is always on hand to help – as little or as much as you need.”
Cindy had to visit for hours every day to help Dad
trying to prod administrators and overworked staff to give him more of the promised care for which we were paying dearly
but without making so much fuss that they’d evict him
and we were all heartbroken that aside from family visits
at the mercy of a company that seemed to be doing more warehousing than care
After a lifetime of helping others as a ship’s doctor in the navy
a physician on Native American reservations and a volunteer for numerous organizations
She knew everything about the industry – the good
the ugly – and had tried to set up my parents’ end-of-life plan to be the best possible for their quality of life
After she learned she had Parkinson’s disease
she convinced Dad to sell their home of 40 years to buy into a continuing care retirement community with landscaped gardens
but Mom knew she might eventually need to move to assisted living while Dad stayed “home” nearby
she died suddenly of an enormous stroke – mercifully
it now seems – and left Dad living alone in his independent living apartment for the next 13 years
Dad developed memory difficulties in his 90s – “Perfectly normal for my age,” he’d chuckle – and would occasionally fall
and then a Medicare-reimbursed rehabilitation unit
but said he would require full-time skilled nursing to stay in his apartment
We asked the continuing care community to move him to the assisted living section on the premises
put it: “Virtually every decision to select a nursing home
is crisis-driven.” The same can be said of assisted living
Neither my sisters nor I could manage having Dad at home – Cindy was already taking care of a husband with cancer
and I live in an apartment 1,000 miles away; but mostly
Dad’s medical needs also precluded having him at home
Currently, about 65% of US elders are cared for by their families at home
For 13% of those who aren’t living with family
the gap is partially filled by assisted living establishments
private “board-and-care” homes have existed
and designed for elders who can no longer live independently or with family but don’t require the round-the-clock medical care of a nursing home
“The values of assisted living tapped into what older people and everybody wants: independence
director of the Institute on Aging at Portland State University
many of those mom-and-pop places were sold to corporations that ran chains of these homes
“Some folks got into it with good intentions
and some got into it thinking they were going to make a lot of money,” Carder said
By 2022 the industry was valued at $91.8bn in the US
but ancillary services provided on top of that base rate
and can bring that cost up to $20,000 a month
most residents are middle to upper-middle class; there are few decent options for people who can’t sell their homes or don’t have savings
or whose resources run out before they die (outside a few residences around the country run by non-profit and religious groups around the country)
Almost 20% of people in these communities receive some Medicaid for services
View image in fullscreenJohanna Meneses walks down the hallway to see her patient at Twilight Gardens in Norwalk
Meneses was recruited from the Philippines to fill in the nursing shortages
Photograph: The Washington Post/Getty ImagesCindy began checking out several communities and nursing homes near her home
where she and Dad’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren could visit
We wanted a place with a private room and a view of the mountains he’d spent a lifetime exploring
“A lot of people tell me they’d rather die than go into a nursing home,” said Richard Mollot
executive director of the Long Term Care Community Coalition
“Assisted living on its face provides a tremendously attractive alternative – the promise of a homelike environment that is not institutional
and get the services you need now and as you get older,” he said
That’s due to a lot of factors that we didn’t understand when we were seeking a place for Dad: staffing shortages
the increased medical and psychological needs of residents
corporate environments that prioritize profits over resident care and quality of life
A lot of people tell me they’d rather die than go into a nursing homeRichard MollotAssisted living and memory care communities are covered by a range of 350 licensing regulations that vary widely from state to state – but with little oversight or enforcement of what few regulations exist
Most regulations don’t require minimum staffing ratios
or are worded as “sufficient” to meet residents’ needs
some advocates say that being more prescriptive would be problematic given staffing availability
Caregivers are typically required to have only a few hours’ training; only about half of communities employ a nurse
State and regional long-term care ombudsmen have the right to enter and investigate and informally mediate complaints at these residences
but they have no ability to enforce regulations
other than making a complaint to the state licensing agency
my mother resigned after 21 years as the director of the Colorado long-term care ombudsman program
which she grew from her sole position to 40 paid and 100 volunteer staff
She had faced political fallout when the corporate owners of several assisted living homes – big donors to the then governor – refused to allow her staff entrance to their facilities to respond to complaints because they were private-pay
even though state regulations guaranteed the ombudsman that access
Then the state’s department of human services made moves to muzzle the ombudsman from talking to the press or lobbying
with the growth and increased corporatization of the industry
these lobbies only wield more political influence
state regulations are even less aligned with residents’ changing needs
which are becoming more acute as more people live longer
and many have complex medical conditions that require advanced care
“The people who live in assisted living now are people who would have been in nursing homes 20 years ago,” said Sheryl Zimmerman
the executive director of the Center for Excellence in Assisted Living and a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Of the 1.3 million people in the US who live in long-term care facilities – now more than half are in one of 30,000 assisted living communities
assisted living facilities neither assist their residents as much as they need
“There’s a lot of room to reimagine assisted living and do things differently.”
one of the biggest websites for evaluating senior communities
is hardly unbiased: it says its service “is provided at no cost to families because it is paid for by the senior living communities and home care providers in its network”
We didn’t think we could rely on a pay-to-play website to find a reliable home for Dad
We ended up signing up at Sunrise Senior Living
which we didn’t realize was one of the largest corporate-owned chains
with more than 240 communities in the US and Canada
We ignored the sign outside that said: “Help wanted
will train,” a red flag for staffing issues
or whether they’d cut his ragged toenails – and we were in such a panic to find a place that we didn’t think to ask
We just felt lucky we’d found Dad a place that seemed nice
“People are sold on the physical property,” said Tony Chicotel
an attorney at California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform
“A lot of these corporations are making beautiful buildings with scenic views
but when it comes to helping people get off the toilet
the mundane tasks that should be routine and have a lot to do with dignity and the quality of your life
it may be the six-bed family-run places that might not look as glamorous on the outside
but where the people doing the work are less resentful because they actually keep the profit
where residents get better care – though there’s no guarantee
he and I met with the executive director and nurse of the assisted living community in his rehab facility for an assessment
They asked him questions about his life with real interest
I told them Dad needed about the level of care he was experiencing in rehab: people checking frequently
waiting patiently when he needed help with the toilet (“that’s what we’re here for
stopping by with a cheerful hello and a glass of juice
They didn’t question whether Dad’s needs were more than they could provide
The price for a room was about $6,500 a month
but far less than $1,000 a day that it would have cost for a home care aide to keep him in his apartment in the continuing care community
But we didn’t know there would be a lot of extra costs: a “Plus Plus” care plan for $113 a day
daily fees for giving medications ($23) and incontinence care ($8
Sunrise didn’t specify what it provided for the extra “Plus Plus” charge
and we assumed it meant caretakers spending more time with him and checking on him
But the small print on Sunrise’s website says that increased charges triggered by assessments don’t necessarily change the amount of care residents receive: “Sunrise does not guarantee that it will adjust staffing levels whenever a new resident is admitted or an existing resident has needs that change,” it reads
“Sunrise does not guarantee that any resident will receive a specific number of minutes or amount of care on any given day or time period.”
“With a for-profit company and private pay
they’re going to charge extra money,” said Charlene Harrington
a professor emeritus at the University of California
San Francisco School of Nursing who studies long-term care facilities
and there’s nothing the residents or families can do about it

frequently hears complaints from assisted living residents that they not only get charged for extras – residents at one facility
reported being charged extra for having their food cut up
even a fee for not buying medications through the facility’s often more expensive pharmacy – but they’re frequently reassessed for a higher level of care and charged even more
They still don’t respond to the call lights,” said Chicotel
once when my father didn’t use his call button when he fell
but we weren’t sure he’d survive the disruption
we began looking to hire someone to assist Dad in assisted living
When my sister brought her concerns to the executive director, she first told her they’d been having troubles with the call light system. Later, she admitted they had staffing shortages. This is a problem at almost all assisted living facilities; one 2022 survey showed that two-thirds of administrators reported moderate or high staffing shortages
and 90% of them found it difficult to hire new staff
caring for old people who may be incontinent
have dementia that may make them aggressive
and suffer many other physical and emotional needs – a job that few people with other options want
The typical worker makes about $15 an hour
is on duty 36 hours a week and works for a for-profit company
director of the Gerontology Institute at Georgia State University
at a hearing on assisted living facilities before the US Senate’s special committee on ageing last January
people of color and immigrants (staff shortages will probably increase further if Donald Trump has his way with mass deportations)
go into the line of work because they value elders or feel it’s a calling for them
the system we’ve set up works against them.”
Carder said that hiring and retaining staff was the biggest challenge in the field
“I’ve interviewed a lot of direct care workers
and they feel a certain amount of stigma and shame,” she said
they also feel a conflict about not being paid well
and doing work that others might think of as demeaning
showering people and changing their diapers.” She said these jobs needed to be normalized
Instead, workers are often so overloaded and harried that they have no choice but to provide poor care. Caretakers at Atria Park in San Mateo, California, part of an assisted living chain, were so inattentive that one put corrosive cleaning fluid in a pitcher usually used for serving juice
and another unwittingly served it to residents; two of them died
The low wages also can cause resentment and pilfering; Dad’s wallet was cleaned out; aides rarely cleaned his bathroom messes or emptied the trash
one night aide told Dad and other residents that their “time was up” and they were near their “expiration date”
which put Dad in a panic that he’d have to suffer the stress of moving again
He didn’t realize her intended message was even more cruel
View image in fullscreen Illustration: Rita Liu/The Guardian/Fraser Family/GettyGiven the staffing shortages
and the need for vigilance over their loved ones
families often have to fill in the gaps in caregiving
Many have to cut down their hours at work or leave their jobs entirely
so caretaking was less of a financial hit than an emotional one
“I was shocked at the amount of assistance I had to give
but it was the only option to provide the kind of care that would even approach what we wanted
it fell way short.” Cindy says she constantly felt guilty that she couldn’t do enough
She would take care of her seriously ill husband at home
then go visit Dad when her husband was asleep
The obvious question anyone who has a family member in assisted living might ask is: if we’re spending $11,000 a month
why can’t they hire more staff and pay more than minimum wage
“It all comes down to money,” said Chicotel
most assisted living communities – 56% – are chain-affiliated ventures
“Whether the ownership is a closely held corporation
they’re all run by people with business degrees and not by people who are actually professional caregivers.”
who has published studies diagramming the details of nursing home ownership
said companies that own nursing homes often own assisted living communities
and likewise have “incredibly complex corporate structures”
They often separate the business into several companies to maximize profits and limit liability
a real estate company will own the actual property
and then charge the management company – which they also own and pay excessive fees to – huge rents
They may have a separate staffing agency that will take its cut
in 2019 the mean staffing ratio would have risen nearly 30%
Since assisted living communities are nearly unregulated
those corporations have even less accountability for their prices or profits than nursing homes
“It’s like a blueprint for how to make money,” said Harrington
or overtime when people call in sick,” she says
“Patients get pressure ulcers and lose weight
and they fall frequently because there’s nobody to help them.” Funds for activities are cut – no more hiring someone to come in for sing-alongs or trips to the outside world
Harrington said the few homes she had seen that had adequate staffing were almost always non-profits – though those vary widely

Photograph: Boston Globe/Getty ImagesAdministrators have little leeway for improving care
“I’m still in the industry,” spent 25 years in that role before he left to become an advocate
A last straw for him was when the corporation purchased broccoli stalks to feed the residents
So what do you do if you want to be comfortable in your old age
eat fresh vegetables and engage with people
instead of spending your days parked in front of a TV
waiting to use the toilet or have your diaper changed
There are some residences that are fine places to live
put her mother into four assisted living facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area before she found one she thought was “wonderful”
She moved her mother from the first because she would often find her in dirty diapers with dark urine – an indication of dehydration – and from the second when she came in after hours to discover the residents with dementia were circled around a TV watching a horror film
She finally found a small board-and-care home that was half the price and gave much better care
“I would come in and find a staff member just sitting with Mom
That home was one owned by Cristina Flores
a nurse with a PhD who has since closed her properties after 30 years and a major back injury
She now works as an advocate for elders and expert witness for the industry
“Long-term care is about creating relationships with residents and families
and really understanding what the person needs
what they do and don’t want in their lives,” she said
“You don’t need a whole bunch of degrees or credentials
but you have to have a heart to do your job.”
She paid her staff a little more than the competition
was able to maintain a high staffing ratio and lower costs than other facilities
There are a lot of organizations and people working on reforming assisted living, such as the Consumer Voice, CEAL and the Long Term Care Community Coalition
and senior housing organizations,” says Carder
Most advocates are demanding increased regulations
increased financial transparency and legislation that mandates a reasonable percentage of money goes to direct care
They also want residents and their families to be able to make complaints without fear of reprisal
One way to pressure assisted living homes is to sue
a San Francisco-based elder abuse law firm
has resolved class action suits for for “misrepresentations and omissions” against three assisted living corporations in California
The suits focused on the deception between what was promised in residency agreements and what was received
The actual difference in the amount of care promised versus delivered was analyzed for a sampling of facilities
“It’s basically false advertising,” Stebner said
residents don’t receive the care they’re paying for – like my father’s “Plus Plus” plan
which didn’t increase the number of times anyone checked on him
“It’s also financial elder abuse to take their money and not provide what they say they will,” said Stebner
Sunrise said: “Both parties decided to settle the case without any admission of wrongdoing or liability by Sunrise.” It added: “Our goal has always been and continues to be focused on the wellbeing of our residents and the thousands of compassionate care providers at our over 240 communities.”
Though those cases settle for some money for the class action plaintiffs
Stebner said the real purpose was getting an injunction from the court to improve conditions
the court required Sunrise to make it clear in public-facing disclosures
such as its residency agreement and website
that Sunrise does not guarantee that any resident will receive a specific number of minutes
and to provide data on the response time to call light buttons.“We’re trying to change the system,” said Stebner
Residents and their families can also make an impact
a former church administrator who quit working when her mother’s Alzheimer’s became too severe
said that in just over a year that her mother has been at the Village at Rancho Solano in Fairfield
she’d had a lot of problems with the administration
the more I realized everyone has the same issues,” she says
Although the facility had a monthly support group already
Zampa felt they couldn’t speak freely because a staff member was always there
When she asked the administrator to form a group without staff oversight
the staffer pushed back until Zampa showed her a regulation that said the residents had a right to meet without staff
they were prioritizing their complaints on a big sheet of butcher paper
One person after another raised their hand
Call buttons weren’t answered in a timely manner
the residents were angry about being charged for higher levels of care
“It’s a bait and switch,” said Roxanne Crosby
whose husband’s care level was reassessed four times in 10 days
increasing extra charges from $350 to $2,200 a month
“Then they told me he needed $1,000 a day for private care on top of that.” She has since moved him to another home – one with six patients and three caretakers
she says – but is angry enough to help lead the group
executive director of the Village at Rancho Solano
later denied that the issues residents raised were problems
She said that the clinical team monitored call response times and that “residents recently expressed that they are satisfied with response times”
She said care level assessments and adjustments were made to ensure “the appropriate level of oversight and support” and that cost adjustments were made “with resident security in mind”
the group had prioritized its complaints and doled out responsibility for who would follow up
to make complaints to the licensing agencies
A week after I asked the executive director to respond to the resident complaints
she let Betsy Zampa know that she would have to move her mother to another facility or the Village would evict her
Zampa said a note on her mother’s care evaluation read: “It is evident that the current community setting is no longer suitable for the resident’s needs
as they require a higher level of care that ensures both their own wellbeing and the safety of other residents.”
The Village refused to comment on the specific case
when a resident’s care needs exceed what we are licensed to provide
we work closely with families to support a safe transition to a setting that can meet those needs.”
Zampa said it wasn’t her mother’s needs that triggered the eviction
“I’ve been rattling their cages and this was retaliation.” Zampa said she would not move her mother willingly
Where would you want to end up when you reach the age of needing assistance
said she would perhaps consider one of the non-profit communities in San Francisco or Oakland that are more mission-driven than profit-driven
Chicotel advised: “Stay at home if you can,” and said that a good alternative was having caretakers for a few hours at home
plans to put a deposit down on a yet-to-be-built resident-led non-profit Life Plan community in McKinleyville
has lived in a co-housing community in Chico
As the people there age – her partner had a stroke
another is living with dementia – people take turns caring for people they’ve known for all those years
“Co-housing has been a lifesaver,” says Tahna
Then there’s the possibility of getting care in another country
my friend Linda Bacon’s husband was suffering from Lewy body dementia
where she was able to hire caretakers at her home
paying less per week for 24-hour care than my father would have had to pay for equivalent care in Colorado
I’ve also lived part-time in Mexico for many years
and intend to move into a single-level home when my husband and I get old
where we can find someone who can care for us as they would a family member
that this plan would be impractical or impossible for a lot of people who don’t want to leave their families or communities

an email — arrived from David with the latest crystal structure

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to confirm that Fraser Taylor is under contract at Saints for season 2025/26
The Saints Youth Academy graduate has enjoyed a breakout season
making his first start for the Buddies and enjoying a fruitful loan spell at Scottish League One champions Arbroath where he scored seven goals and registered 14 assists
Fraser made his first start for Saints in August in our Premier Sports Cup fixture away to Dundee United and featured as a substitute in the UEFA Conference League against Valur and SK Brann
it was the 22-year-old who assisted Alex Iacovitti's equalising goal away to SK Brann in the Third Round of the UEFA Conference League
He would join Arbroath on loan in September and his performances at the Red Lichties saw him named the PFA League One Player of the Year at the PFA Awards Dinner on Sunday evening
Speaking to stmirren.com
Fraser said: "This season has been good for me
especially being voted on by the players in the league that you play against every week

Fraser linked up with experienced ex-Saint Ryan Flynn and he admitted the experience helped him grow as a player
getting experience playing first-team football
I’m buzzing to come back and just try and get myself in at the first-team here at St Mirren."
"Flynny has helped me up there and playing with him and guys like Sam Stanton and Scott Stewart and learning bits from them has been really good."
St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson added: "Fraser has done really well
I’ve been to watch him personally a few times and for me he’s been the best player in the division
He comes back now and has to bridge that gap
He’ll be working over the summer and it's a big season coming up for him
"It’s been a fantastic loan for him and Callum Penman
You sometimes think that boys are ready in training
but when you go out and play men's football you can’t replicate that in U18 or youth football
decisions matter and you have to get used to the physicality
He's done fantastic and now it's making that step up to the Premiership level and we're convinced he can do that."

selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter
“This is a beautiful piece,” says Andrea Fraser
an artist with conflicted feelings about luxury goods and art markets
“A sophisticated composition of austere dignity,” she continues slyly
Fraser is in New York for her Phoebe Philo photoshoot
The artist is reciting lines from her 1991 satirical performance May I Help You?
It’s so far away from the passions that ordinary people invest in their ordinary lives.” We laugh
because we know that the elite phrases once used to sell high art can now be applied to minimalist fashion
After Philo’s people contacted Fraser about this feature
the artist delved into the brand’s website and had “an intense emotional response” to the designer’s work
“The models seem to be hiding in the clothes
Muscular from years of weightlifting and samba dancing
wears a black T-shirt and nerdy black-rimmed specs
“Collection B addresses the problem of fitting
I am always trying to figure out how to fit in.” It was Fraser’s idea to wear the clothes and mimic the poses of Philo’s lookbook
She explained that it was hard to perfect and hold postures that the models had swiftly moved through
Also evident is Fraser’s inability to deflect attention to the garments by lightening up her intense presence
Born to a mother whose paintings were never publicly displayed
Fraser inherited her ambition to be a celebrated artist
She also absorbed her painful legacy of being ignored
posed insurmountable obstacles to artistic success
leading her to abandon painting and become a psychotherapist
surrounded by queer hippies from whom she absorbed the camp adage “There’s no shame in being poor
“I wore hand-me-downs and reconstructed garments
like old jeans that were ‘hippified’ by inserting a triangle of cloth – usually a Madras bedspread – to create flares,” she explains
The sartorial pride of the family was Fraser’s eldest brother
who rode a unicycle wearing a suede fringe jacket and a satin top hat
(The artist’s affection for flower-child masculinity is explored in Men on the Line
a performance in which she recreates a 1972 round table discussion between four men who identify as feminists.)
Check your internet connection or browser settings
She is a professor at the University of California
and chaired its prestigious art department for nearly four years
she does not have a single university degree
She dropped out of Berkeley High shortly before turning 16
talked her way into art school and then moved on to the Whitney Independent Study Program rather than graduating
The experience fuelled her desire to fit in and her awareness of clothes as social markers and metaphors
“When I was a teen circulating in the New York art world
I also wanted to pass as someone who had a college degree and an income,” she explains
but that implies a kind of mastery and play
Andrea Fraser wears Phoebe Philo © Talia ChetritA model wears Phoebe Philo © Talia ChetritAlthough precise costuming is essential to a Fraser performance
the artist is notorious for appearing in the buff
repeatedly requested by museums and private collectors
falls into “the grand old tradition of nudie performance art”
Official Welcome is a kind of surreal one-woman awards ceremony in which Fraser plays the parts of nine artists who are being introduced and celebrated by nine gushing museum insiders
she paraphrases vintage Damien Hirst (from the days before he quit drinking
“How about ‘Kiss my fucking ass!’” before bending over to brandish her buttocks
“Some people think she’s sacrificed her body for professional success.”
Self-reflexivity is woven into Fraser’s every move
Nudity is such a cliché of transgression that the artist jokes
“I’m not really naked because I’m in quotation marks.” When preparing to re‑perform Official Welcome
Fraser acknowledges that the most difficult decision pertains to the coiffure of her pubic hair: “Untrimmed
landing strip or full Brazilian – my choices have been inconsistent over the years.”

aluminium and steel armatures; installation view from Andrea Fraser: Untitled (Video
Courtesy of the artist and Marian Goodman GalleryFraser also ends up naked in her infamous Untitled (2003)
which documents her sexual encounter in a hotel room with an art collector who pre-purchased the video documentation of their carnal exchange
By having the collector pay for the video rather than the sex
Fraser was able to represent artists in general as escorts of the rich while positioning herself as an amateur pornographer
Even though the idea behind Untitled is sensational
and the participants come across as awkward strangers on a one-night stand
The video is so intentionally artless that
the gallery’s visitors’ book was full of confused complaints about its lack of eroticism
Fraser also often pens her own press releases to assuage her anxiety about being misunderstood and extend her self-declared control-freakery
the metaphor of the artist as prostitute is about “the intimate entanglement of personal and market valuation that often drives participation in the art world’s steeply stratified economy”
Paradox is never far away from Fraser’s work
In a book-cum-artwork titled 2016 in Museums
Fraser itemises the political-campaign contributions made by every board member of the top 128 art museums in America
Consisting of 944 pages of dense text with no pictures
2016 explores the relationship between cultural and party-political clout
and made a big splash on the coffee tables of art world insiders with its prurient insights into their neighbours’ discretionary spending
which examines the shifts in spending in the year of Donald Trump’s second presidential victory
Andrea Fraser wears Phoebe Philo © Talia ChetritA model wears Phoebe Philo © Talia ChetritThe data compiled across her various works would make most people’s heads spin
but Fraser finds terra firma in her love of memorisation
something she discovered at age 11 when learning Adrienne Rich poems by heart
Not only does Fraser memorise her performance scripts – the oldest of which she can still recite decades later – she has also committed long tracts by Pierre Bourdieu
Bourdieu builds a monumental theory about social stratification on the key insight that education and “cultural capital” are in a complex struggle with wealth and “economic capital”
Fraser’s devotion to the late social theorist might be described as biblical
once honoured Fraser as a cleric who knows that “religion is the opium of the people” but who continues her own priestly work
making “the socially unsayable actual and manifest”
Fraser uses Bourdieu to interpret Trump’s right-wing bling
everything in marble or gold but only reproductions
“But laughing at it reveals my sense of cultural superiority over a crass taste that flaunts wealth without refinement
sublimation or appreciation for history – all qualities associated with education.” Of course
the flip-side of Fraser’s fascination with quiet luxury would be an alienation from loud luxury

Fraser sometimes shows a soft spot for conspicuous consumption
In one of the few physical art objects that she has made in the past 40 years
she collected hundreds of costumes abandoned after Carnival in Rio de Janeiro
then stacked them in a 9ft-high sculpture called A Monument to Discarded Fantasies
fantasias means both “costumes” and “fantasies,” a semantic overlap (or pun?) that speaks to the power of clothes to alter realities
Fraser’s most recent exhibition, held at Galerie Marian Goodman in Paris
marks another of the artist’s rare forays into sculpture
Modestly scaled neoclassical figures fabricated from scratch (rather than assembled from found materials) would normally be a recipe for sales
five life-sized naked toddlers lie in various sleepy positions with mottled grey complexions that suggest
that they’ve been dead for either 48 hours or 2,000 years
Are they uncanny literalisations of artworks as offspring
suggesting that Fraser’s fecund relationship to making art has taken a macabre turn
Or are they a puzzling feminist response to the curtailing of American women’s rights not to bear children and the recent vilification of “childless cat ladies”
when I was working on another project (a book called 33 Artists in 3 Acts)
Fraser told me: “One of the core fantasies of artists is unconditional love and the associated unconditional value attributed to anything that we produce.” Once I recalled the quote
I saw Objects I-V as metaphors for unconditional love and the inconsolable pain experienced when a loved one is lost
the sculptures also have a residue of guilt
They somehow embody the conflict of loathing the inequities that underpin the art market while attempting to sell something within it
but they do congeal into a sophisticated composition of austere dignity
And they are so very far away from the passions of ordinary people

a Board of Trustees Professor at Northwestern University
a pioneer in the fields of nanoscience and organic chemistry
was an outsized figure on the Evanston campus and on campuses he visited around the globe
By introducing an additional type of bond — the mechanical bond — into chemical compounds
Stoddart became one of the few chemists to have opened a new field of chemistry during the past 30 years.
His work on molecular recognition and self-assembly and his subsequent introduction of template-directed routes to mechanically interlocked molecules dramatically changed the way chemists make soft materials
Throughout his long career of research and teaching
Stoddart mentored a diverse group of more than 500 graduate and postdoctoral students from around the world
he particularly cherished this work and the resulting relationships
“Fraser was a giant in fields of nanoscience and organic chemistry
but his influence was equally impressive in the classrooms and labs on our campus,” said Northwestern President Michael Schill
“He was incredibly generous with his time and mentored so many students and faculty
helping pave important new paths of inquiry and discovery
His impact on our university — and the world — was enormous.”
Morrison Professor in Chemistry at Northwestern and chair of the department
Stoddart was a steadfast friend and mentor
“His contributions to our community went far beyond his accolades
as he supported and elevated each of us through his boundless energy and spirit.”
Stoddart was the Chair Professor of Chemistry at the University of Hong Kong
Stoddart received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2016
along with Jean-Pierre Sauvage and Bernard L
“for the design and synthesis of molecular machines.” The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences credited them with developing “molecules with controllable movements
which can perform a task when energy is added.”
“The development of computing demonstrates how the miniaturization of technology can lead to a revolution,” the academy said in its announcement
“The 2016 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry have miniaturized machines and taken chemistry to a new dimension.”
the academy said, in 1991 he developed a rotaxane
He threaded a molecular ring onto a thin molecular axle and demonstrated that the ring was able to move along the axle
Among his developments based on rotaxanes are a molecular lift
a molecular muscle and a molecule-based computer chip
Stoddart’s introduction of the mechanical bond
which has led to the fabrication of artificial molecular switches and motors
has been responsible for putting chemists at the forefront of the burgeoning field of molecular nanotechnology
with implications ranging all the way from information technology to health care
Upon becoming the second Nobel Prize winner from Northwestern’s department of chemistry
Stoddart expressed his appreciation for the University’s academic community
“I also share this recognition with my students
postdoctoral fellows and colleagues,” he said
where everyone does science in a collaborative way
and people step forward without being asked
It is well known that we hunt in packs at Northwestern.”
dean of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern: “Sir Fraser brought a sparkling creativity
a global perspective and a sharp wit that often reflected his broad interests and his belief in the value of a liberal arts education to his work and life
His scientific findings and ambition will continue to reverberate through the College and University
Stoddart’s achievements include raising the bar for molecular electronics
he used molecules on the nanoscale as the tiniest of switches
which have been incorporated into the densest of memory chips in a device that can hold the Declaration of Independence but is only the size of a white blood cell
He also gave practical expression to artificial molecular switches using nanovalves planted on the surfaces of mesoporous glass nanoparticles to create controllable and targeted drug delivery systems for the treatment of cancer and other degenerative diseases
wrote that Stoddart “is to nanotechnology what J.K
he was appointed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as a Knight Bachelor in her 2007 New Year’s Honours List for his services to “Chemistry and Molecular Nanotechnology.”
“After being knighted, the queen and I had a short exchange, and I concluded she had her wits about her and had done her homework,” Stoddart recalled in a 2022 interview with Northwestern Now after the Queen’s passing
He was one of three to receive knighthoods at a ceremony that included other significant honors
“The main subject of conversation among us afterwards was
Stoddart also received the Royal Medal in 2010 from His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh at the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), Scotland’s national academy of arts and sciences
A common theme of Stoddart’s research was the quest for a better fundamental understanding of self-assembly and molecular recognition processes in chemical systems
He worked for more than three decades on using this growing understanding to develop template-directed protocols that rely upon such processes to create artificial molecular machines
Stoddart’s philosophy of transferring concepts from biology into chemistry was behind his bottom-up approach to the construction of integrated nanosystems
“My research on mechanically interlocked molecules
which has taken the field of supramolecular chemistry
heralds a game-changer for molecular nanotechnology,” Stoddart once said.
Northwestern nanoscientist Chad Mirkin said hiring Stoddart was one of the best moves the University made
“He is a big part of the ‘rise of Northwestern’ story,” said Mirkin
Rathmann Professor of Chemistry and a professor of medicine
biomedical engineering, and materials science and engineering
he made Northwestern and everyone around him better.”
Stoddart was elected to Fellowship of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2012
membership of the National Academy of Sciences in 2014
foreign membership of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017 and Fellowship of the National Academy of Inventors in 2019
Stoddart received many other prestigious national and international awards and honors
They include being elected an Honorary Fellow of both the RSE and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and receiving the Davy Medal from the Royal Society of London, the national academy of science of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth
Other awards include the China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award
the Nagoya Gold Medal in Organic Chemistry
the King Faisal International Prize in Science
the Tetrahedron Prize for Creativity in Organic Chemistry
the Albert Einstein World Award of Science and the RSC’s Centenary Prize.
Stoddart served on the international advisory boards of numerous journals
He published more than 1,300 scientific papers and trained more than 500 graduate and postdoctoral students during an academic career that spanned five decades
Northwestern professor Will Dichtel was one of Stoddart’s postdoctoral researchers
“Underlying his considerable accolades was an endlessly supportive and caring mentor
I was fortunate to learn from him first as a postdoctoral researcher at UCLA
where he encouraged my creativity and courage to tackle big scientific problems,” said Dichtel
Fraser played this role to hundreds of scientists around the world
We will all miss him dearly and take this sad occasion to reflect upon and acknowledge his considerable personal and scientific impact.”
Stoddart was Fred Kavli Chair in Nanosystems Sciences at the University of California at Los Angeles and director of the California NanoSystems Institute
He came to UCLA in 1997 from England’s University of Birmingham
where he had been a professor of organic chemistry since 1990 and had headed the university’s School of Chemistry since 1993
Stoddart received his Bachelor of Science (1964)
(1980) degrees from the University of Edinburgh
where he was a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow and then
where he was first an Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) research fellow before becoming a faculty lecturer (assistant professor) in chemistry
After spending a three-year “secondment” (1978 to 1981) at the ICI Corporate Laboratory in Runcorn
he returned full time to the University of Sheffield
where he was promoted to a readership (associate professorship)
He moved to the University of Birmingham in 1990 to take up the Chair of Organic Chemistry
former senior editor of science and engineering

Fraser-Pryce has twice won the mother of all titles, Olympic women's 100m gold, and the 38-year-old was not messing around against other parents on Wednesday (17 April) – cruising to a comfortable victory.
“They haven’t banned me yet so I’m at the line,” Fraser-Pryce joked on Instagram, positing footage of son Zyon in action as well as videos of her own 100m race win.
Fraser-Pryce is the third fastest woman of all time, clocking 10.6s in 2021, and it was no surprise to see she left the other parents chasing her shadow at the 2025 edition.
The Beijing 2008 and London 2012 champion won by a sizeable margin, as she did when competing in the same race two years ago.
with Fraser-Pryce last week declaring she has “unfinished business” in the world of track athletics
The 2025 World Athletics Championships take place in Tokyo this September
and Fraser-Pryce could look to make that her final race
She has won eight Olympic medals overall across the 100m
her most recent gold coming in the 100m at Eugene 2022
which ended with the words: "Unfinished business." The post was captioned: "Time will honor your greatness - 2025."
She has won five 100m world championships crowns to date
"My faith has always affirmed my trust in my journey," she added.
In January 2025, the 38-year-old revealed in an interview that she would compete for one more year before finishing her astonishing career, which was confirmed by her latest video post.
The 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September could be her final race.

Thanks for visiting
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beautiful mom
She lived in Langenburg on the family farm until she left home for nursing school
Carleen met her devoted husband Neil in Brandon
where they married and had their two daughters
Carleen and Neil enjoyed successful careers and many great friends and memories during their time in Brandon
Carleen and Neil moved to beautiful British Columbia and settled in Kelowna
Carleen finished her nursing career with Baptist Housing
where she earned awards for her admirable leadership skills
Neil and Carleen built their dream home with a magnificent view of Okanagan Lake
They spent many happy times on their back deck with a glass of wine
Carleen lived the remainder of her life in Kelowna — a city she and Neil had always loved
Carleen dedicated a great deal of her life to helping her loved ones
often putting others’ needs before her own
She was the type of person many people turned to for guidance
Carleen was unwaveringly strong in her Christian faith and spent a great deal of time attending Trinity Baptist Church
even those who would not have expected her to
and she had the ability to connect with anyone she crossed paths with
Carleen and Neil always loved staying active through hobbies such as walking (10,000 steps a day!)
Carleen loved music and could often be found playing the bongos in her younger years
and singing with family and friends in her later years
She enjoyed many wonderful vacations with Neil
Many people over the years have referred to Carleen as being “one of a kind.” Not only was she beautiful inside and out
She told jokes that made people laugh until they cried
There’s absolutely nothing Carleen wouldn’t have done for her husband
Carleen is survived by her husband Neil; eldest daughter Dani (Nick); youngest daughter
She is also survived by her siblings Judy (Henry)
as well as many extended family members and wonderful friends
Carleen was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in July 2020. Her spirit and soul would’ve fought forever, but her body couldn’t fight any longer. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to Myeloma Canada
It is Carleen’s family’s hope that there will one day be a cure for this disease
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr
and the wonderful staff at the Hospice House Kelowna and BC Cancer Centre
A celebration of Carleen’s life will be held on Saturday
Please honour Carleen’s vibrant personality by wearing bright Colours
for being the brightest light in our lives
and providing inspiration that will carry us throughout the rest of our lives

Carleen was always a pleasure to chat with when visiting my parents at Joseph Benjamin
friendly and truly cared about the residents
Sorry to hear of the passing of such a vibrant lady
Our family appreciated her help with our parents while transitioning to Joseph Benjamin and her continued support she provided us while they lived there
Sending my deepest condolences to Carleen’s family
I met Carleen through our shared Multiple Myeloma diagnosis
Carleen was a mentor to me and her strength and positive attitude was inspirational
Our hearts are broken at the loss of our dear friend “Car” or as we used to call each other 40 years ago “Bird” … Carleen and I lived together in Brandon when we were nursing there … both married “Fraser” boys (not related)
(in Carleen and Neil’s wedding we had “sunset photos” taken with the bridal party and then some of us had “sunrise” pictures taken on the tractor!) and we had two daughters each
travelled and made memories that I will cherish forever
Although our lives took separate paths after we both married and their move to BC our hearts remained intertwined and when we got together it was as if no time had passed
Miss you “Bird” … your work on earth is done and you are now at peace in God’s hands
We are sending prayers your way and hoping you know how much we care
Our sincere condolences to all of Carleen’s family
She was a lovely soul and her faith in Jesus was inspiring
We are thinking of you all during this difficult time
May you find comfort as you celebrate Carleen’s beautiful life
With love and prayers from our family to yours

Everything was so organized and pertinent to what we needed
courteous and very helpful during our emotional and challenging time
They were so prompt on answering any questions and changing things
They were prepared and respected any religious decisions
The process was so seamless and made easy in such a high stress situation
In the past 2 years Springfield has helped us through the death of my Mother and my Father
Their response and help allowed us to focus on the remaining family rather than worrying about details of the funeral and all the notifications that are required upon a death
The atmosphere has been nothing but professional during times of grief
the staff coached me on the next steps and looked after filling in all the government forms that I needed to sign
which took a huge burden off my mind at the time
From the time I called to the completion of all the services
There was a sense of caring from each staff member
I was turning over my Mom to their care and I felt very comfortable with everyone
I felt heard and never felt pushed into any decision
I have always found the team at Springfield Funeral Home to be VERY caring
I have and will continue to recommend them to anyone who asks which funeral home would I suggest they use
No other funeral home I have dealt with even comes close to Springfield Funeral Home
I was made to feel as if I was the only one they had to serve
Everything that was arranged for us was perfect
Thank you for making this difficult time a little more acceptable via your staff’s obvious caring and respect
I liked the personal treatment given to my mother who is 97 years old
I found Springfield employees pleasant and sincere
was that the funeral home would help me get through the paperwork need at this time
Since this was my first experience (with a funeral home)
everything was above and beyond what I expected
Thank you to your team for your kindness to me at a very challenging time
You have now taken care of both of my parents with professionalism and care
Springfield Funeral Home is always professional
We appreciate that you have dedicated staff for all needs from planning the service to completing government paperwork
I am not sure there was anything you could have done to make a very intense emotional time less stressful
Although we hadn’t expected Ken to want a service
when he said we needed to have one for us not him
Your sincerity and compassion meant everything to us
your compassion and professionalism is truly amazing
super professional and caring as each guest arrived
Keep up the good work that you do as it is such an important service you provide
It is still the most difficult time in a person’s life
We appreciated the peace of mind that everything was being looked after
You provide a wonderful service for people going through a traumatic time
The kindness and professionalism shown by the staff at Springfield Funeral Home was exemplary
More and more CrossFit lifers are jumping into the world of HYROX
Written by Teaganne FinnLast updated on May 2nd
HWPO Training, the fitness brand and training platform led by five-time CrossFit Games champion Mat Fraser, is entering the HYROX fitness racing trend.
The company announced on Tuesday that it will partner with HYROX through a digital collaboration
Fraser posted a video on Instagram announcing that he has another HYROX race on the books for the fall and will be training “for real” this time.
Remind me: The worlds of CrossFit and HYROX continue to coexist; however
a trend has emerged in which traditionally CrossFit-focused training camps and fitness brands are incorporating HYROX into their offerings.
PRVN Fitness, co-founded by Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr and Shane Orr, is one of the most notable brands recently to invest in HYROX, following closely on the heels of John Singleton’s The Progrm
HWPO Training did not disclose any further details about the partnership but expressed enthusiasm surrounding the fitness race that is taking over the U.S.
Fraser elaborated on his training in a video on his YouTube page
He shared that he had done almost no preparation for his first HYROX race
which he participated in alongside his friend
The announcement shouldn’t come as much of a surprise since O’Keefe signaled earlier this year that HWPO Training would be expanding its reach into other areas of fitness. Readers can find that interview here.
One last thing: Two of the greatest CrossFitters of all time are now proponents of the fitness race
