He soared to Olympic glory in Paris last summer
Frederick “Flips” Richard channeled his nickname for a good cause
an Olympic bronze medalist and Stoughton native
broke the world record for the most backflips performed in 24 hours
raising more than $42,000 for aspiring gymnasts in Africa
On Friday, Richard completed 1,111 standing backflips, adding to the 21-year-old’s long list of achievements. The event was live streamed
In the final moments of the event
Richard tearfully thanked his sister Alexandra Richard
who set up the fundraiser while pregnant and “never slowed down,” he said
The event was sponsored by the Frederickflips Foundation in partnership with the Dominican Health and Education Initiative to raise money for gymnastics equipment for unprivileged children in Uganda
The GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $42,000.
“[Alexandra] worked harder than anybody while pregnant, like that’s the family I have supporting me,” Frederick said Friday just before midnight.
After he hit 1,000 flips, Frederick told viewers that his sister went into labor just a day before the event.
“I’m breaking [the record] before midnight so that I can say I broke it on the day my nephew was born,” he said. “His name’s Amir. I’m definitely going to the hospital after this to see him, but let’s do this.”
The event was held at Premier Gymnastics in Stoughton. It was open to the public from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and was live streamed on multiple platforms.
On Sunday, Richard celebrated the record and his nephew‘s birth with a post on Instagram. “Backflip World Record Holder and Uncle Frederickflips,” he captioned a series of photos.

Richard posted a compilation of flips on Sunday
Cheers and applause could be heard in the background as cannons shot off blue confetti in celebration
During the event, artist Mattaya Fitts painted a giant mural of two flipping gymnasts against a brightly colored background
“It was an honor to support a dope cause and witness history being made,” Fitts commented on Richard’s Instagram page
The day after completing his record flip session
Richard posted a video where he pretended to limp on camera

(WBFF) — Frederick Police announced the arrest of four people after a protest in Frederick turned violent
were charged with Obstructing and Hindering
Eastwood and Draghici also face an additional charge of Assault in the Second Degree on a Law Enforcement Officer
while Gainey is charged with the same offense three times

“Peaceful protest is a constitutional right we will always protect,” Chief Jason Lando said
“But when individuals show up with a plan to assault officers and damage property
We will not tolerate violent or destructive behavior in our city
and anyone who puts our community or our officers at risk will be held accountable.”
approximately 20 people wearing all black began escalating tensions at what had been a peaceful demonstration to that point in the area of Fourth Street and North Market Street
The protestors were also wearing protective goggles and gas masks
which the statement said indicated the protestors anticipated confrontation or knew they were engaging in unlawful activities
As officers attempted to deescalate the situation
several of the individuals began assaulting law enforcement personnel
including throwing objects and swinging metal poles at them
and other tools commonly used to destroy property or interfere with police
A nearby window was also discovered shattered
along with the coordinated behavior of these protesters
clearly indicates this group arrived with the intent to commit crimes; not to peacefully protest," the statement continued
"most participants demonstrated peacefully and with respect for the law and we thank those individuals and organizations for honoring that responsibility." According to the release
several groups gathered throughout the City of Frederick Thursday evening to exercise their First Amendment right to protest peacefully
Additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation remains active and ongoing

Olympic medalist and Stoughton native Frederick “Flips” Richard just broke a Guinness World Record to add to his list of accolades
Richard took home a bronze medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics, so he’s no stranger to hard work. At 21, he’s already made his mark
he took on “one of the hardest challenges of [his] life.”
In a livestream Friday, Richard pushed himself to his limit to beat the world record for the most backflips in 24 hours
Not only did he shatter the previous record — 1,001 backflips — but he did it for a good cause
many of these talented young athletes train on makeshift setups like tires and other unsafe surfaces,” Alexandra wrote on the page
we can change that and give them the resources they need to reach their full potential.”
The fundraiser was organized as part of the FrederickFlips Foundation in partnership with the Dominican Health and Education Initiative
Confetti fell from the ceiling at Premier Gymnastics in Stoughton as Richard hit major milestones in his mission to beat the record. In an Instagram Reel
Richard celebrated hitting 900 flips after 15 hours of flipping
Beyond the good cause and the glory of the record
achieving his goal carried plenty of personal weight
Richard got emotional and thanked Alexandra for her commitment to his dream
He explained that as he pushed himself through the challenge
“Breaking it before midnight, so that way I can say I broke the record on the day that my nephew was born,” Richard said in an Instagram Reel
I’m definitely going to the hospital after this to see him
But Richard didn’t just break the record; he went a step further and brought the new record up to 1,111 backflips
Richard celebrated his two big wins: breaking the record and becoming an uncle
“Backflip World Record Holder and Uncle Frederickflips,” he wrote on Instagram.

The acclaimed author and professor opens up about cultural critique
and how discovering buried history helped him find his voice — and inspire his students to find theirs
has the kind of classroom presence that sticks with you long after the semester ends
His lectures feel less like lectures and more like jam sessions — equal parts history
Gooding is best known for his book “You Mean
insightful guide to decoding racial patterns in Hollywood
He brings that same lens to the classroom at TCU
where he teaches in the Honors College and holds the Dr
Whether he’s breaking down Kendrick lyrics or federal hiring policy
Gooding meets students where they are — and then challenges them to go deeper
We caught up with him to talk about hip hop
Fort Worth Magazine: When you say hip hop still gets a bad rap
Frederick Gooding: What I mean by that is that [the] media has been quite critical of hip hop — misogyny
But here's the thing: much of what people are criticizing is actually the commercialized and commodified version — rap music
What I contest is that there’s still a very poignant
and poetic vibration alive and well in hip hop — it’s just largely underground
this deeper layer of hip hop wrestles with real human themes: dignity
I’m not saying we shouldn’t criticize materialism or misogyny
It’s just become a convenient scapegoat for America’s ills
FWM: What initially drew you to African American studies
my guidance counselor pegged me for a future in wood shop
And this isn’t unique to me — hip hop legends have spoken about this
‘This is dedicated to all the teachers that told me I’d never amount to nothing.’ That hits
often miss it — especially when race is involved
But Biggie used his voice and his words to prove his value
And I make a living doing what I was once told I had no value for
FWM: Can you share a moment when your research shifted your understanding of yourself or your community
“American Dream Deferred: Black Federal Workers in Washington
from 1941 to 1981,” I had this lightbulb moment
Federal employment after WWII gave rise to a stable Black middle class
but she went from high school straight into the federal government
I have another aunt who worked for the Environmental Protection Agency
Not because they didn’t go to good schools
but because this history just isn’t taught
FWM: How do you help students navigate tough conversations about race
Gooding: The first thing I do is take the pressure off
Everyone is scared to say the ‘wrong thing.’ No one wants to be labeled a racist — that’s social death
But here's the thing: a lot of us are good people who simply lack education
I approach these conversations not with blame
If you’ve never been exposed to different communities
This isn’t about who you are — it’s about what you’ve encountered
You can argue whether it’s effective today
These policies were created to respond to actual
We can't repair what we refuse to recognize
None of them say ‘African American History Since 1865.’ That kind of phrasing
These classes are cleverly disguised history lessons
You can’t understand the blues without knowing what the Black body endured post-emancipation
You can’t feel the full depth of jazz or the rage in hip hop without knowing the context
‘If you don’t know the history of the author
you don’t know what you’re reading.’ I’d say the same for music
If you don’t know what the artist lived through
FWM: What’s the response been like from TCU students
I’ve been nominated for Honors Professor of the Year two years running
It’s the emails I get after the semester ends — the students saying
‘This class changed how I see the world.’ That’s when I know the conversation isn’t over
They don’t have to agree with everything I say
But if they leave thinking more critically
and searching for better answers — then that’s a win
FWM: What lessons from the past do you think are most urgent for young people today
Gooding: People say history doesn’t repeat
While many see history as the story of change over time
Don’t be lulled by the idea that ‘we’ve already been through this.’ History isn’t a checklist
And it’s always asking: Are we paying attention this time

Key witnesses testify in Frederick Wiggington trial
recounting last moments with Elsieby Alexia Stanbridge
(WSET) — The trial of Frederick Wiggington
and her body was discovered buried under a concrete slab at her home in August
The prosecution argues that Fred shot and killed Elsie
while the defense said there's not enough evidence
The prosecution brought 12 witnesses to the stand
A neighbor recounted witnessing an argument between Elsie and Frederick shortly before her disappearance
The neighbor said he didn't know Fred and Elsie well
He said he kept a distance from Fred because he claims Fred had an affair with his own wife at one point and was sexually involved with many other women
The neighbor said he had seen Fred and Elsie fight before
He said Fred was grumbling about something
and Elsie said 'What the **** did you say to me?" Then he said Elsie went inside
This was the last time the neighbor said he saw Elsie
he said Patricia Wiggington moved into Elsie's home
Elsie's daughter Sativia Rucker testified in court
She said that Elsie was a good mom and grandma
her mom's job called her asking where she was
Multiple witnesses testified that Fred had told them that Elsie had drained his bank account and left him for someone else
Elsie was a director of nursing at Fairmont Crossing Health and Rehabilitation Center
One of her bosses testified that Elsie never showed up for work on Monday
Fred texted her boss multiple times to ask about her
testified that Elsie had planned to visit but never arrived
She said Elsie had never not shown up when she was supposed to come
Coleman said it really concerned her when Elsie did not call her autistic son on his birthday in July
The defense questioned Coleman on whether Elsie called from a different phone number when they talked
They also asked if Elsie had multiple Facebook accounts
but she was not sure if they were all in use
Four witnesses from the jobs Fred held in March of 2024 testified
Witnesses testified that he told coworkers his wife had been found dead in Virginia Beach
He claimed she had been shot and placed under a pier
One coworker said when Fred told him about his wife
he smirked "like it was a joke." He said he followed up by saying his wife had left him months before and emptied 50 grand from his bank account
The Amherst County Sheriff's office did not find Elsie until August 2024
and she was found on the Wiggington property under a cement slab
Local sheriff deputies and a Virginia State police agent testified as well
They stated that Frederick claimed he was watching movies with Elsie on Saturday
he had told investigators that he didn't know she was gone until he came home from work Sunday night
they said he also told investigators that when they were dating
Elsie had asked him to open up a bank account so that she could close her bank account and put her money in his
He said she wanted to protect it from her brother
He said Elsie put over $30,000 in his account
Fred told investigators she worried her brother would hack into her account and take her money

Dimly lit by a square of light on the stage floor, a massive American flag drooped ingloriously and ominously from the ceiling of Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center's Te Ata Theater
As Jimi Hendrix's iconic instrumental rendition of the national anthem reverberated through the intimate space
And out of that darkness, esteemed actor, writer and Spike Lee collaborator Roger Guenveur Smith emerged wearing a black suit and carrying a microphone — and wearing and carrying the spirit of the late, great Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) almost as tangibly
Smith started the May 2 performance of his signature one-man show "Frederick Douglass Now" with a mesmerizing recitation of key passages from the 19th-century self-liberated abolitionist, pioneering feminist and powerhouse public speaker's 1848 letter to his former master, Thomas Auld
Smith was still an undergraduate student at Occidental College in Los Angeles when he decided to put together a one-man show on Douglass for an honors project in American studies
After he graduated from Occidental in 1977, Smith went on to study at the Yale School of Drama — where his classmates included Angela Bassett
Dutton — and to forge an award-winning career as an actor
Over nearly a half-century, Smith also has evolved his "Frederick Douglass Now" into a mesmerizing 60-minute soliloquy that he performs without intermission — and with no breaks in intensity
It's sad but undeniably true that the speeches of the 1800s icon remain remarkably relevant
which means that Smith's long-running show remains true

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. – UPDATE:
Frederick Wiggington was found guilty on all charges in the Elsie Wiggington murder case on Friday. The jury deliberated for just over an hour.
“Relief. Happy that justice for Elsie is served today.”
These were the emotions felt by Elsie’s relatives after a jury was unanimous in their findings.
Tracey Coleman, Elsie’s foster sister, says she felt her presence as the verdict was read.
“Because while we were sitting in there, Satina said to me ‘Trace, my shoulder is tingling’ and I was like yeah mine is too I think Elsie is here.”
The prosecution hammered Frederick’s inconsistent stories while highlighting details on how she was killed.
A Blue Ridge Regional Jail inmate testified that Frederick told him that he shot and killed Elsie in 2023. The prosecution rested its case after a recorded interview with the inmate and law enforcement.
Even though Elise is gone, her family says they have some closure knowing that Frederick has faced justice.
“But it still hurts to know that she’s not here. I know she is in heaven, and I thank God, and I thank the jury, and I thank this court for serving justice today.”
“Again, I want the sentencing to be max for everyone involved in killing my sister.”
Frederick’s sentencing is set for July 30, 2025.
The jury has started deliberations in the trial of Frederick Wiggington, who is charged with first-degree murder following the disappearance of Elsie Wiggington. This marks day three of the proceedings.
Today, jurors heard testimony from a jailhouse informant who claimed Wiggington told him in jail that he shot and killed Elsie on a Saturday in June and then pawned a gun.
The jury also heard from the medical examiner yesterday, who stated that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head. Blunt force trauma to the face was noted as well, indicating it occurred after her death.
Updates will continue to be available here on 10 News, working for you.
On Thursday, the jury heard from the medical examiner, who testified about the cause of death: a gunshot wound to the head.
They performed the autopsy on August 15, 2024, after the body was recovered. Examiners recovered bullet fragments from the skull.
They also noted blunt force trauma to the face, injuries that the examiner says appeared to have happened after her death.
Jurors also heard from another investigator who says Fred claimed Elsie ran off to Virginia Beach.
Right now, they’re hearing testimony about what was found on Fred’s phone.
10 News is still working for you, getting the very latest.
Nearly two years after his wife, Elsie Wigginton’s disappearance, and nearly eight months after her remains were found on their property, Frederick Wigginton’s trial for first-degree murder began Wednesday.
The prosecution called it a ‘cold-blooded execution’, saying Elsie was shot in the back of the head, in opening statements.
The jury heard from 12 witnesses on day one, who all gave their accounts of Elsie’s disappearance.
Multiple witnesses testified that Wigginton told them after Elsie’s disappearance, that Elsie had been murdered in Virginia Beach — shot in the chest and left under a pier. That included two people who interviewed him for a job in Lexington, saying he claimed he had to go identify her body.
But as we’ve reported before, Elsie’s remains were found months later, in August 2024, buried beneath a concrete slab on the couple’s property.
The topic of financial descrepancies between the couple. was also discussed by multiple witnesses.
In their opening statements, the defense argued there’s no DNA evidence tying Wigginton to the crime and raised questions about when and where it actually happened.
A neighbor testified to hearing the couple loudly arguing around the time Elsie’s family last heard from her.
Her daughter, Sativa Rucker, said she stopped hearing from her mother in late June 2023.
Sativa testifed that days later, Wiggington called and told her Elsie had left him — something that surprised her.
Tracy Coleman, Elsie’s foster sister, said Elsie planned to come stay with her around that time in Baltimore but never showed.
Finally, the jury heard from a special agent who interviewed Wiggington almost a year after Elsie disappeared.
He says Fred gave conflicting statements — initially claiming Elsie left to stay with her daughter, then later saying he had ‘no idea where she went.’
He mentioned she had an affinity for the beach, referenced a brother recently out of prison, and claimed she talked about leaving — but only revealed later in the interview that he believed she came back to the house after disappearing.
Court will reconvene at 9:00 a.m. Thursday where the prosecution will continue calling witnesses.

the Reno City Council and Redevelopment Agency established Redevelopment Project Area No

RDA 2 included the Reno Hilton (now Grand Sierra Resort)

without new taxes or strain on Reno’s general fund
The GSR assumes all financial risk; if the project underperforms
as supported by the Redevelopment Agency Advisory Board on April 21
Critics falsely claim TIF diverts public service funds
but incremental property tax from rising values goes to the Redevelopment Agency
This revenue supports projects like property acquisitions
façade upgrades and sewer fee offsets for other redevelopment projects across the city
Incremental property tax revenue cannot fund general city services while the Agency exists
TIF has bolstered the tourism and hospitality sectors by funding downtown Reno projects designed to attract visitors
private ownership of the arena proposed at the GSR reduces municipal risk by assuring adequate funding for operating
maintenance and capital expenses — costs the city and redevelopment agency simply cannot afford
but which are not absorbed by the private companies that use the facilities
Meruelo’s request includes no municipal debt and no taxpayer funds outside of what the GSR contributes
The same cannot be said for the downtown facilities
which collectively maintain approximately $133 million in obligations spread across three different bonds
the downtown facilities have created substantial financial benefits to the downtown casinos for the past 30 years by using public funds at the expense of the city’s budget
This new proposal by the GSR is a responsible departure from how projects have been built in the past
The GSR project offers Reno a rare opportunity to rival Las Vegas entertainment venues
attracting top-tier events and cementing its status as a premier entertainment destination
set for a spring 2025 groundbreaking and 2027 opening
