Kyle Freeland did not play in the Colorado Rockies' 4-3 win against the San Francisco Giants on May 1
Kyle Freeland did not take the mound in the Colorado Rockies' 4-3 win against the San Francisco Giants on May 1
with a record of 0-4 and an ERA of 5.93 over 30 1/3 innings
Freeland's ERA was 7.15 with a K/9 of 8.3
His road performance shows a better ERA of 4.39
indicating stronger outings away from home
Get in on the action—here’s where to bet on the Rockies this season:
Can April showers bring May flowers for the Rockies
After a miserable month of games in March/April, the Colorado Rockies (5-25) sit at the bottom of baseball with one of the worst starts in baseball history
the hope is that the last month's showers will start to bring about some flourishing for the Rockies
Unfortunately, the Rockies start the month with a trip to unfriendly territory as they square off against the San Francisco Giants (19-12)
5.93) has struggled with blisters on his hand as well as a lack of run support while getting hit hard by opposing teams
He’s done well keeping walks down this season and had a moderate amount of strikeouts
but opponents have a career-high .310 average against him
The Giants aren’t exactly firing on all cylinders offensively
but they are still dangerous against the Rockies
The Giants counter with Justin Verlander (0-2
Verlander has been off to a bit of a slower start this season
The 42-year-old has worked at least five innings in all but one of his six starts
but he’s given up multiple runs in most of them
he’s looked like the Verlander of old as he’s allowed just two earned runs over 12 innings
He can still get plenty of strikeouts and won’t many
meaning the Rockies are going to have to take advantage of what’s given to them

Freeland sets franchise record as Rox earn 1st back-to-back wins of '25May 2nd
SAN FRANCISCO -- Growing up in Denver, Kyle Freeland didn’t give much thought to ever pitching for the Rockies
let alone taking up a slot in their history books
that’s exactly where the veteran left-hander is
Freeland made his 207th career start on Thursday at Oracle Park, pitching six strong innings in Colorado’s 4-3 win over the San Francisco Giants
He left without a decision for the third time in seven starts this season
“I thought he threw the ball well,” Rockies manager Bud Black said
He started finding the release point for the breaking ball
And he pitched in a little bit more effectively
He had to because [Justin] Verlander pitched well.”
pitched effectively into the seventh inning before three Giants relievers combined to finish the eight-hitter
The Rockies didn’t get much going off Verlander until Ryan McMahon snapped a 2-for-59 funk with a 400-foot blast in the seventh
Colorado’s starting pitcher was the best thing going
Freeland worked around a game-opening home run to Heliot Ramos and a small blister that formed mid-game
allowing three runs and seven hits over six innings
The Colorado Kid tops the list.Congratulations, @KFREE_21! pic.twitter.com/NWZU0CiQSq
That propelled him into the Rockies’ history books
Freeland has made more starts than any pitcher for a club he grew up idolizing
“Growing up as kid in Denver [I] never even thought I’d be playing for the Rockies let alone being at the top of a lot of the leaderboards with this organization," Freeland said
being able to be a part of this organization for so long
to be able to create those milestones for myself
I couldn’t do it without my teammates and family around me
“It’s truly an accomplishment that I’m able to be very happy about
[I can] look back at how long of a career I’ve had so far at this point
and know that I’ve done a lot of good things with this organization
When Black removed the 31-year-old southpaw
following an RBI double from Jordan Beck and a two-out RBI single by Hunter Goodman in the eighth inning
the Rockies were in front on their way to posting back-to-back victories for the first time this season
he didn’t factor in the decision and is still searching for that elusive "W," which will be his first since last September
“I thought overall he did what he needed to do,” Black said
Jordan Beck and Alan Trejo had two hits apiece for Colorado
Angel Chivilli followed Freeland and retired four batters
Scott Alexander set down two before Zach Agnos worked the ninth for his second save
Colorado’s win was just its second in 15 road games this season

Freeland earns Rox-record 4th Opening Day nod: 'He was our guy'March 17th
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Lefty Kyle Freeland will make his Rockies-record fourth Opening Day start on March 28 against the Rays in Tampa
Rockies manager Bud Black announced Sunday
“His total commitment to the organization and how he’s throwing the ball this spring
he was our guy to take the ball,” Black said
will surpass current rotation mate Germán Márquez in Rox Opening Day assignments
The pair have started every Rockies opener since 2019
and Márquez receiving the assignment in ‘20
“Whenever you get called into Buddy's office in a situation like this
you start getting those butterflies and start getting excited,” Freeland said
and he's been able to name me four times as the Opening Day starter.”
The announcement comes during a mostly solid spring from Freeland, although Sunday was tough in a 10-2 loss against the Royals at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick
Freeland gave up seven earned runs in the Royals’ eight-run second inning
He’s now struck out 13 in his past two outings
“I was fighting my mechanics in the bullpen and was able to skate by in the first inning,” Freeland said
“And the second inning unraveled on me with my mechanics
“But [Black] pulled me after all that happened in the second inning
I was sitting in the dugout to kind of collect myself
this is what I need to work on.’ Sure enough
and changed the name of another -- with what was called a slider last year now being called a cutter
He also has a solid fastball and a changeup
which has taken work but became a solid pitch
“He’s worked so hard over the years to find a good changeup,” Black said
he’s been very diligent on wanting to improve his game -- like all great players do
They want to consistently improve and work
Sunday’s struggle against the Royals could be a good omen
He went 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA in five Cactus League starts
Then he began the regular season at Arizona and gave up 10 runs in 2 1/3 innings
It was the start of a slow start in which he posted a 13.21 ERA in four starts before going to the injured list with a left elbow strain
Freeland posted a 3.96 ERA in 17 starts for the rest of the season
Martini leaves with wrist injuryVeteran non-roster invitee Nick Martini went 1-for-1 against the Royals to raise his batting average to .406
but left the game after being hit by a pitch from Royals lefty Angel Zerpa
Martini was removed from the game and sent for X-rays

WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks reopened Caroline Freeland Urban Park in downtown Bethesda on Saturday
Montgomery Parks Director Miti Figueredo and Montgomery Planning Board Chair Artie Harris were joined by special guests Maryland State Delegates (D-16) Marc Korman and Sarah Wolek
Montgomery County Council President Andrew Friedson
granddaughter of Caroline Freeland.
Families and community members joined the celebration
The $3.3 million renovation introduced a spacious central lawn
and accessible pathways that connect to a larger playground
The new entry plaza on Hampden Lane welcomes pedestrians and provides emergency vehicle access when needed
“We are so proud of the renovated Caroline Freeland Park,” said Miti Figueredo
“The combination of the new playground and seating areas in this location furthers Montgomery Parks mission to create spaces where people of all ages can gather and enjoy physical activity and develop social connections.”
Caroline Freeland Urban Park is named for the first female chair of The Maryland- National Capital Park and Planning Commission
During Freeland’s tenure as chair from 1963-1971
parkland more than doubled in size from seven thousand to sixteen thousand acres
The park occupies a prime location near the downtown Bethesda central business district
the Connie Morella Library and nearby housing
Its location makes it a hub of activity for the community
“ My grandmother would have been so thrilled to see the generations that gathered to celebrate the park’s reopening,” said Megan Raymond
“She was wheelchair-bound in her later years
and it would’ve been incredible to wheel her along the park’s accessible pathways to see this new design
The new layout now closely links the park to the library next door
which is named for a long-time friend of my grandmother’s
A panel commemorating Caroline Freeland’s accomplishments will be installed in the park later this year

Freeland (8 K's) sharp in spring outing vs
Fernandez homer; updates on bullpen candidatesMarch 12th
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The sensors and the pitching glossary will catch up with Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland
which is fine as long as the hitters lag behind
Making more-frequent-than-normal use of his new slider -- which for a brief period in camp was called a sweeper -- Freeland struck out eight in 4 2/3 innings during Tuesday’s 8-5 loss against the Reds
Mining through how his 73 pitches were defined by MLB Gameday
Freeland provided a guide for when the Rockies’ analytics team and the Gameday crew compare data before the regular season
it’s either my slider or my actual knuckle-curve.”
has grabbed a leadership role with the Rockies’ pitching staff
After helping the Rockies to the postseason in his first two seasons
Freeland struggled and was sent to Triple-A to develop his changeup
He has kept adapting through hot streaks and occasional struggles and injuries
“The breaking ball was good,” manager Bud Black said
“I know he’s changed the grip a little bit
It’s still curveball-slurvish-sweeper-slider
Freeland finished last season with a 5.24 ERA
but after a slow start and a left elbow strain that sidelined him from mid April to late June
he pitched to a 3.96 ERA in his final 17 starts
“I’ve probably said it a million times and it’s been drilled through my head – you can’t stop learning in this game,” Freeland said
“The little things that you can pick up along the way – a new pitch
harness it and use it to the best of your ability
it’s going to help carry you to more success.”
Rough one for HalvorsenRighty Seth Halvorsen, a rookie with closer stuff
serving up Dominic Pitelli’s solo homer during a 2/3-inning outing in which he surrendered five runs on three hits and two walks
“It’s an education for young pitchers when you get to this level,” Black said
“Even though those guys he faced were Minor League players
He’ll get the ball again this Spring Training and he’ll get going.”
Is the force arriving?Outfielder Jordan Beck has a long home run this spring
but hasn't made consistent hard contact
But his first-inning single had a 107.4 mph exit velocity
“There's an upside that we hope shows up soon,” Black said
Keen on Veen, Yanquiel for realNo. 8 prospect Zac Veen launched his second home run of the spring
441-foot shot off the Reds’ Sam Moll in the seventh to give the Rockies a lead
Veen’s last two seasons at Double-A Hartford have been interrupted by hand and thumb injuries
but he has shown enough to continue in Major League camp
Outfielder and No. 6 prospect Yanquiel Fernandez
optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque earlier in the day
clubbed his first homer of the spring – an opposite-field shot to left off righty Ian Gibaut in the eighth
Every game is a testThe competition for a roster spot is on for a long reliever role
Righty Jake Bird (2.35 ERA through 7 2/3 innings this spring) was solid before giving up two runs on one hit and three walks against the Giants on Monday
Wednesday’s home game against the Padres will feature multiple candidates – right-handers Jake Woodford
Right-hander Jimmy Herget
who is out of Minor League options and therefore a candidate to begin the year with the Rockies
Herget’s next outing is scheduled for Thursday
Return of the fastballRighty Antonio Senzatela
limited to three starts last year after undergoing Tommy John surgery
fanned six in four innings against the Angels on Monday
Black said Senzatela’s fastball was reminiscent of his best pre-injury days
in terms of effectiveness and his zeal for using it
“He’s always been very proud of his fastball – he’s aggressive with it,” Black said
“There are some pitchers who like their fastball but tend to mix pitches a little bit more
But I like that Senza really believes in his fastball
so that when he does throw his secondary pitches
He needs to have that sort of philosophy about how to use his stuff.”

Freeland still energized by challengesFebruary 24th
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Left-handed pitcher Kyle Freeland’s idea of excitement is attacking something others would rather not try
That would be pitching for the Rockies and constantly tinkering to combat the head-turning effects of altitude
Freeland has done it successfully. He pitched in the postseason his first two seasons and finished fourth in National League Cy Young Award voting in 2018. He’s been paid well for it, thanks to a five-year, $64.5 million contract extension he received in 2022
But Coors Field and the rigors of Denver have turned on Freeland. There was a chastening option to Triple-A Albuquerque in 2019, inconsistency and poor luck since he signed the deal and a lengthy absence with a left elbow strain last season
The injury occurred with his ERA through four starts at an unsightly 13.21
Freeland returned in much better form and pitched to a 3.96 ERA over his final 17 starts
even if it’s a place with such a daunting reputation that established starters rarely choose to sign with the Rockies
Freeland, who will turn 32 on May 14, chose to stay, partly because he loves the challenge of finding new ways to evolve.
But they’re spoken with a conviction that there will be joy
“You’ve got to buy in and understand that we’re the only team that plays in this elevation for half of our games
making adjustments and coming back home and making adjustments every three to seven to 11 days,” Freeland said
“It’s going to make it that much sweeter in the end when we’re doing just what we were doing in 2017 and 2018
when we knew that no matter who comes to our park
So how do starters for a team that’s lost over 100 games the last two years find a way to believe
“I like to see myself as more knowledgeable
more polished as a pitcher and as a teammate than I was my first couple years,” he said
In his first Cactus League start of 2025, Freeland allowed two hits over two scoreless innings in a 6-1 split-squad victory over the Brewers (the other squad lost to the Athletics, 4-0
Freeland’s outing was a combination of where he wanted to be before last year’s elbow injury and where he wants to go in the future
Last year, Freeland showed up with greater fastball velocity than at any point since the early part of his career, when he mostly pounded right-handed batters inside with a fastball and hard slider. The harder fastball velocity and the more mature pitch mix were supposed to make Freeland dominant
Instead, Opening Night was a pratfall – 10 runs and 10 hits yielded to the D-backs in the worst start of Freeland’s career
Freeland suspected too much offseason throwing affected his health and led to bad habits
he feels his arm is fresher and his mechanics are sound
he showed fastballs a tick below 93 mph on the four-seam and slightly below 92 on the two-seam
changeup – the pitch that alternately worked with and against him earlier in his career – and a curveball that took years to perfect because of an arm slot that’s lower than ideal for the pitch
But he finished the outing by striking out left-handed-hitting Ernesto Martinez Jr
on his new pitch – a manipulated slider that has characteristics of a sweeper
“It's the same grip as my curveball,” Freeland said
“We're just seam-orientating it a little bit differently
but it's got a little more horizontal movement to it
it's showing some things out of my hand that they haven't seen
Zone awarenessImproved strike zone awareness could allow shortstop Ezequiel Tovar to reach the stardom the Rockies believe should be his already
Tovar hit 26 homers and an NL-leading 45 doubles last year
he walked once on Saturday and twice on Sunday
with a successful ABS challenge involved in one of the walks

-- Florida Atlantic hired LeAnn Freeland as its new women's basketball coach on Tuesday
Freeland comes to the Owls after 13 seasons as the coach at Division II's Nova Southeastern
which is only about 30 miles south of FAU's campus
Freeland went 274-124 in her 13 seasons at Nova Southeastern
"Having lived and coached in this area for quite some time
I've seen first-hand the awesome things happening at Florida Atlantic," Freeland said
"I know there is tremendous potential for the women's basketball program to be successful
and we will hit the court and recruiting trails as soon as possible to build a championship program."
Freeland -- who went to the Division II Elite Eight four times at Nova Southeastern -- is replacing Jennifer Sullivan
The Owls announced that Sullivan stepped down last week after four seasons to take a job as an assistant coach at Missouri
have not finished a season over the .500 mark since 2013-14 and have not had a 20-win season since 2005-06

Kyle Freeland started with a new tool in his arsenal: a sweeper that’s so far been bringing success to the Colorado Rockies lefty
started throwing it in ‘pens before spring training started,” Freeland said
“kind of got a good feel for what I was looking for
what we wanted to see out of it and just carried that through spring.”
“I got a nugget of information from a buddy,” Freeland said
“and then we implemented into our into our pitching lab to figure everything out
And sit down with our analytics crew and our pitching lab guys and let them help me out
It wasn’t a difficult pitch for Freeland to master
“Me being a supination guy
those kind of things kind of fall a little easier for me,” Freeland said
“But this new slider-sweeper thing that we’ve picked up
something I was able to wrap my head around pretty easily and understand it and get it to where I wanted right now
it’s still in somewhat of a developmental stage
He’s thrown it 87 times so far this season (53 times vs
he’s only given up five hits when using his sweeper
he’s seeing some swing-and-miss success with it
Freeland has struck out nine hitters with his sweeper
he’s struck out four using his knuckle curve.)
Freeland’s sweeper is moving 2390 rpm with a vertical drop of 41.5 and a 9.0 horizontal break to the glove-side
hitters have a .192 batting average against the pitch
which suggests perhaps that hitters have not yet adjusted to Freeland’s addition
it’s working though it’s also worth noting that it has a 47.1% Hard Hit%
Since the Rockies tend to pitch to contact
it leaves Freeland and the defense with little margin for error
Mario Delgado Genzor of Baseball Prospectus (and a Purple Row alum) says of Freeland’s new offering:
While I definitely think the pitch’s performance so far has outpaced its raw quality
I do think it’s a good offering for Freeland
It’s sort of a cross between a traditional slider and a sweeper
it covers an important role in Freeland’s arsenal: a proper swing-and-miss weapon versus lefties
This has enabled him to use his cutter (which lefties crushed) less and pick his spots more
since the sweeper plays a better east-west game with his sinker
Freeland’s always been more than the sum of his parts
I think it’s his best pitch moving forward
But I also don’t think it’s as good as its current results
Freeland likes what the new sweeper brings to his game
and then immediately see good results off of it
Automatic confidence booster right there,” Freeland said
and I think it matches well with his other pitches.” He added that it matches up well with Freeland’s fastball
“Being able to see lefties and righties take bad swings on it and get the results that we want to see with it right off the bat

Kyle Freeland’s excellent start to 2025 took a hit tonight as the Rockies lost to the Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers arrived at Coors Field with a decimated pitching staff. Still, they had their ace, Freddy Peralta, who kept the Colorado Rockies on their heels for the first half of the game with the Brew Crew’s bullpen — including old friend Nick Mears — locking down the win
That all changed in the third when the Brewers tagged Freeland for five hits and four runs
Another miracle stop by Gold Glove shortstop Ezequiel Tovar ended the inning
he seemed strong as his pitch count approached 100
Jimmy Herget entered the game in relief of Freeland and promptly gave up home runs to Christian Yelich and William Contreras
The pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: The Rockies offense was ineffective
When Peralta struggled early to establish the fastball
Brenton Doyle would get the Rockies on the board at the bottom of third
It was followed by a rare Tovar walk and another by Ryan McMahon
the Rockies were unable to score runners after a Kris Bryant strikeout and a Kyle Farmer groundout
Peralta’s fastball was up in the zone and working
The Rockies strikeouts followed with the bullpen picking up where Peralta left off after the fifth inning
Zac Veen brought his patented chaos to Coors Field
A throwing error by Abner Uribe saw Veen landing on second base and advancing Kyle Farmer to third
Jacob Stallings struck out (his third of four) to end the rally
it was mostly strikeouts and missed opportunities
(Peralta accounting for six and the bullpen eight.) The Rockies were 0-8 with runners in scoring position
Whether Freeland could have fared better with some run support is a question is a question worth debating
Michael Toglia continues as the Rockies’ First Base Ironman
Tonight marked his 100th consecutive start
meaning he passed Andres Galarraga (99) for most consecutive games started at first base in franchise history
It is also the second-longest stretch of consecutive starts at any defensive position in franchise history
trailing Vinny Castilla’s franchise record of 222 consecutive team games at third base
So he has a ways to go before breaking that record
Also worth noting is that Mickey Moniak had some defensive gems tonight
including an impressive catch of a Joey Ortiz line drive in the ninth inning
The Rockies will try to win Game 2 tomorrow night behind the pitching of Antonio Senzatela

Freeland 'set the tone' during 'outstanding' Opening Day vs
TAMPA -- Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland’s Friday afternoon was a complete reversal of last year’s opener
#Rockies LHP Kyle Freeland just threw the 14th quality start on Opening Day in club history. Freeland today, Mike Hampton ('01) and Kyle Kendrick ('15) were scoreless. Baseball-Reference chart: pic.twitter.com/96EzAl8vei
“Everything’s been working coming out of camp,” Freeland said
“I’m very happy with the adjustments I made and some of the additions to the mix that we’ve made over the spring
I’m very happy with where I’m at to start the season.”
The message from Freeland and manager Bud Black was
while it was a start comparable with few Opening Day starts in the Rockies’ 33-season history
Unlike Mike Hampton in 2001 against the Cardinals at Coors Field and Kyle Kendrick in 2015 at Milwaukee
Freeland’s scoreless quality start in the opener at George M
Steinbrenner Field didn’t result in a victory for him
The Rays’ two-run seventh against Tyler Kinley erased the Rockies’ lead
Kameron Misner led off the bottom of the ninth with his first Major League home run
The Rockies hope Freeland’s performance Friday is a sign for the next 30 or so starts
protecting Freeland’s next starts was part of the reason Black removed him before the seventh
But the two most closely involved -- Black and Freeland -- felt it was best
Freeland had an honest conversation with Black
who has managed him from his first Major League pitch in 2017
but you’ve got to think about the up-downs [breaks between the innings] and the innings,” Freeland said
“It was the second time I’ve touched six innings this year
I’ve said in the past that you’ve got to have a good rapport with your manager and let him know how you’re feeling and what you want to do.”
Logic backed the decision to go with Kinley
After struggling since undergoing right elbow flexor tendon surgery in 2022
Kinley developed a curve and increased use of a changeup to go with a hard slider and a fastball
and he impressed with eight scoreless Spring Training outings
Bad counts and less-than-solid hits felled him Friday
Kinley expects more chances to follow excellent Freeland outings
“That was outstanding,” Kinley said. “The last time I saw Kyle throw like that on Opening Day, I was with the Marlins in '19, and he came to Miami [seven innings, two hits, one run in a 6-3 Rockies victory].”
Freeland and the Rockies believe more good than bad will happen if he pitches as he did on Friday
Freeland has won on a fastball high and inside to right-handers
plus a curveball and a changeup to vary the speeds
The hard slider with dramatic downward movement
Freeland said he vetoed just two pitches from Hunter Goodman
who finished his rookie year of 2024 catching frequently
Goodman said Freeland executed whatever he wanted
“I liked the way he controlled the zone, attacking hitters early with a bunch of different pitches,” said Goodman, who celebrated his start with a single and a double
Freeland's strikeout rate on Friday was higher than the 6.7 per nine innings of his previous eight seasons
As long as he is filling the zone the way he did against the Rays
“We had everything going today from the jump,” he said.
