Fremont’s iconic clown statue has been defaced—and the community is pooling together to fix it
Someone painted over the face of the clown and his sidekick, Gertrude, according to the official website for J.P. Patches
the statue has been defaced again,” the website stated
“Someone has spray-painted the faces black
We are looking into how to best restore the paint
but any donations will be greatly appreciated!”
and a certain cultural presence around the Northwest that refuses to diminish
The clown was a TV fixture in Seattle from 1958 to 1981 on KIRO7 TV
making it one of the longest-running children’s shows on local TV anywhere in the U.S
The statue was unveiled in 2008 with a street later named after the iconic clown
“A portion of the proceeds from the Patches Patio Pavers is set aside for statue maintenance as well as for donations to Seattle Children’s
paver reservations have been down the last few years,” J.P
we had to remove the donation box at the statue because it was repeatedly being broken into
that leaves us in the unfortunate position to have to ask for help cover the costs of the necessary restoration.”

FREMONT – The May 6 primary has two Republican contenders for the Fremont City Council 3rd Ward seat: John Tate
but I think it’s time for a change,” Tate said
He believes in the importance of looking at both sides of an issue by listening to multiple people
as well as the pros and cons of the problem at hand
He’s been a Freemason for 8 years and said he’s familiar with the way meetings are run
with procedural methods like Robert’s Rules of Order
“I consider myself a very pragmatic person
the ward and the city that you are potentially being elected to,” Tate said
“You don’t just serve the ones with the R or D
More: Schwable pushes for fiscal responsibility in primary race for Fremont 3rd Ward
Tate was a police officer with the Green Springs Police Department
having graduated from the police academy in 2007 and serving until 2013
He then moved on to a job working at Materion (formerly Brush Wellman)
After several years working on the manufacturing floor
he moved into the technology and innovation department
Tate described that chemical lab to basically be research and development
so while I haven’t served in public office
I have been very close to political candidates and issues
I’ve dealt with the way a city council runs and the way that meetings go,” Tate said
but I’m in my mid-40s and it’s time for people of my generation to start trying to get into positions and run for offices
We’re at a stage in our life where we’ve established ourselves as individuals
and now it’s time to start helping our community as well.”
Tate prides himself on his ability to talk with anybody
“I think people get into politics and they see the ugly side of it,” Tate said
“The reason I’m trying to get in is that there is a very beautiful side to it
it’s in getting multiple views and ideas before making a decision in doing something."

Ayden Carter is living a fantasy as a wish becomes reality
The Fremont Ross graduate parlayed two years at Division II Walsh University into an opportunity to continue his career at the University of Detroit Mercy
"Once the season ended it was time to enter my name into the transfer portal and try to fulfill my dream of going D1," Carter said
In the first five minutes of my name entering the portal
I was hearing from schools looking to offer scholarships
"I was contacted and offered by schools all across the country
fielding nearly 100 calls throughout the entire process
no visit to another school felt like family as much as the University of Detroit Mercy
From the first conversation with Coach (Mark) Montgomery
I loved everything he had to say and most importantly how he felt about me as a player and a person."
High school baseball Brothers in same dugout not rare, but always special
Carter joins Greg Bender as the only Little Giants boys to play Division I basketball
Bender played at North Carolina Wilmington from 1986-89
Detroit won eight games last season in Montgomery's first year
Montgomery is a former assistant to Tom Izzo at Michigan State
"I took an official visit to UDM and that sealed the deal for me," Carter said
"The entire staff treated me and my family with the utmost respect throughout the three day process
put me up in a great hotel and of course showed me the historic Callahan Hall
"I felt that this would be a place that I could thrive in
especially with a great staff behind me and with that I decided to commit
my family and all my previous teammates for helping me get to this point in my career and I couldn't be more excited to begin this new journey."
Detroit junior Orlando Lovejoy stuck with Montgomery after averaging 16.4 points last season
despite the prospect of more NIL/revenue sharing money elsewhere
Carter wants to win a Horizon League championship and earn all-conference status
He has three years of eligibility and plans to pursue a Master's degree in communications
No player in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference scored more than Carter's 34 points in a setback to Northwood last season
Carter was among the top 50 in the nation in points per game in Division II
"I started to gain attention from sports agencies looking to sign me to their company," he said
"I decided to finish the season strong and enter into the next phase
with my support system as my main source of help."
He scored 1,000 points in two seasons at Ross and he's more than half way to 1,000 for college
He started each of the 20 games he played in as sophomore
He was second in the GMAC at 19.4 points per game to lead the team
was second at 5.7 rebounds and added two assists
He collected a career high 12 rebounds in the same game he scored 34 points
"It was going into my sophomore year that I knew I was going to earn the chance to show my full potential," he said
"My dad (Bobby) and I worked harder than ever before leading up to my sophomore season
skill work on the court and I made sure to be in the best shape I could be
I solidified my spot as a starter and made it known I had put the work in and grew as a player from my freshman season
I had the mindset and confidence to know I put the work in and had the ability to go and achieve my goal of taking my game to the highest level
none of this would have been possible and I give him all the praise."
Carter was first player off the bench as a freshman
won the league tournament and advanced to the national tourney
"I joined an experienced Walsh team that came off of winning the GMAC the (previous) two seasons," Carter said
being the only freshman to not just play (all others red shirted) but to be a consistent sixth-man that played the fourth most minutes of anyone on the team."
"Overall physicality has increased greatly," he said
"I learned how to take over a game and score in every area of the game."
There are still questions to be answered by the court because of appeals
but it's believed all basketball players will benefit from revenue sharing Carter's first year at a Division I program
image and likeness will remain part of the equation in some capacity
"NIL is a huge part of college basketball in today's game and I am thankful to be getting my piece of the pie for playing the game I love," Carter said

Fremont shows that age is truly just a number
"How long have you been running for?" I asked him
I joined Fremont and his good friend Harvey Lewis for a few laps at Glenwood Gardens Park
where Fremont's infectious smile and determination were on full display
Take some strides with us as Fremont shares his running journey:
"There's not a lot of 103-year-olds moving like you are," Lewis said
The pair have been running together since 1999
"He's been a real inspiration for me," Lewis said
"I mean the fact that Mike at 103 continues to get out there and push himself
Fremont's running journey began after a personal tragedy struck his family
"And I thought I needed to relax a certain amount
so I started running across a dam by my property."
Fremont incorporated running into his parenting routine
So I ran with my children every day after work," Fremont said
Fremont faced another significant challenge
and they told him he had three months to live," Lewis said
Fremont never doubted his ability to keep running
"You have to cope with these things somehow in your life," Fremont said
That resilient attitude is what keeps him moving forward
Alex knows what his neighbors in Northeast Nebraska are passionate about
His stories celebrate the good in our communities while also examining crucial issues
“A resident here in Fremont woke up with a bat attached to her hand
and it had bitten her,” said Jennifer Birkhofer
Deputy Chief at the Fremont Police Department
And then the situation turned from bad to worse
“Her husband in the process of trying to remove the bat from his wife’s hand also received a bite,” said Birkhofer
That bat was taken in for a closer examination and after some testing it was confirmed the bat was positive for rabies
While rabies isn’t common according to the CDC the warmer months of the year
There isn’t much you can do to prevent wild animals from spreading rabies but you can help keep your community safe by making sure your pets are up to date on their vaccinations
With up to date vaccinations the chance of your pet catching or spreading rabies is slim
the CDC reports just under 10% of its cases come from pets or livestock
But in a scenario where you do find an animal acting strange or being aggressive the smartest thing is to get away and call the professionals to come take care of it
“Any animal concerns you can give our non emergency number a call,” said Birkhof
If you need to get your pet's vaccinations up to date there is a vaccination clinic that happens in Fremont twice every month
It happens on the first and third Saturday of every month from 8AM-2PM at 309 W Jefferson road
If you have questions about the clinic you can reach out to Omaha Pet Vaccination Clinic at (402)443-2006

The Fremont High School baseball team celebrates Saturday afternoon after defeating Eastside 13-5 to win the NECC Tournament championship game in Butler
Eastside pitcher Cole Omspacher delivers an offering to the plate during the NECC Baseball Tournament championship game Saturday afternoon at Eastside
Fremont senior Cayden Hufnagle follows the flight of one of his three hits during the Eagles’ 13-5 win over Eastside in the NECC Tournament championship game Saturday afternoon in Butler
The Fremont High School baseball team celebrates with a dogpile on the infield at Fiedler Memorial Field in Butler Saturday afternoon after defeating Eastside 13-5 to win the NECC Tournament championship game
BUTLER — The Fremont High School baseball team seems to be kicking things into another gear at a good time
the Eagles used a six-run fourth inning to defeat host Eastside
13-5 in the Northeast Corner Conference Tournament championship game
Fremont (10-3) won its third NECC Baseball Tournament title ever and the first since 2010
it was a seesaw affair in the early innings
Fremont jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the second inning
The big blow was a two-run homer by Cayden Hufnagle
Eastside countered with two in the home half of the second and took a short-lived 5-4 advantage with three in the bottom of the third
Then it was the Eagles putting their emphatic stamp on this one with their six-run fourth-inning uprising
Hufnagle started the rally with an RBI single
and Fremont sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame
The Eagles added three more runs in the top of the seventh to close out a busy day of scoring
Hufnagle went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs to lead Fremont’s 13-hit attack
and he also pitched the final three innings to earn a save despite the lopsided score
surrendering just one hit and striking out seven
Hufnagle is working his way back into his customary top pitching form for Fremont after suffering an arm injury during a basketball sectional home game with Bethany Christian in early March
That has limited his pitch count so far in 2025
Hufnagle threw 42 pitches on Saturday and first-year Fremont head coach Rob Hale said Hufnagle should be back to 100% by the sectional tournament
Hufnagle said he’s feeling stronger with every outing
and it felt good to be on the mound for a significant period of time.”
Hale said his team’s aggressive approach at the plate paid off in a big way against the Blazers
Getting production from the bottom of the batting order helps
the Eagles got a 4-for-5 day from leadoff man Colten Guthrie with three runs scored and two RBIs
Sophomore center fielder Bryton Householder went 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBIs
Sophomore Alex King got the win with an inning of scoreless relief of starter Jackson Foster
Eastside is back in action today at 5:30 p.m
Warrior freshman Brendan Miller drove in Jack Massey to break a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning
Fremont answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth
and then Hufnagle tripled on a misplayed ball in the outfield
Freshman Ben Ford plated Hufnagle with a sacrifice fly
allowing an unearned run and three hits in six innings
Hufnagle pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save
Elijah Zolman took a no-hitter into the sixth for Westview (5-8)
He allowed four runs on four hits and struck out three
Ethan Hartsock pitched two scoreless relief innings for Churubusco (3-9) and struck out five

Fremont and Ancestral Puebloan people began to incorporate farming into their hunter-gatherer lifestyles approximately 2,000 years ago
Petroglyph panels throughout the park depict ancient art and stories of these people who lived in the area from approximately 300-1300 Common Era (CE)
Named for the Fremont River that flows through the park
evidence now shows that these people lived throughout Utah and adjacent areas of Idaho
The Fremont lived in natural rock shelters and pit houses (dug into the ground and covered with brush roofs)
Their social structure was likely composed of small
loosely organized bands consisting of several families
They were closely tied to nature and flexible
making frequent modifications in their life ways as social or environmental changes occurred
Anthropologists suggest that the Fremont were hunter-gatherers who supplemented their diet by farming corn
and squash along waterways and floodplains
Corn was ground into meal on a stone surface (metate) using a hand-held grinding stone (mano)
the atlatl (spear-throwing stick) and the bow and arrow
Several artifacts are distinctive to the Fremont
polished surfaces or corrugated designs pinched into the clay
The Fremont made moccasins from the lower-leg hide of large animals
possibly providing extra traction on slippery surfaces

We are learning additional information about a Thursday evening crash that killed seven people in Idaho, west of Yellowstone National Park.
The Fremont County Coroner’s Office has identified the driver of the Dodge Ram pickup involved in the U.S. Highway 20 as 25-year-old Isaih Moreno of Humble, Texas.
"Due to the complexity of the incident, the identification of all individuals involved and notification of their next of kin will take time," a news release states.
ISP reports the pickup truck was heading westbound while the Mercedes van was traveling eastbound toward Yellowstone National Park.
All of the people involved in the crash were transported to area hospitals.
ISP reports three were flown by air ambulance — one to Bozeman and two to Idaho Falls, Idaho. The remaining people were taken by ambulance to area hospitals with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.

They had valid B-2 tourist visas and were charged under a rarely used statute: “Unlawful Possession of Ammunition by Alien Admitted Under a Nonimmigrant Visa.”
the Fremont County deputies contacted an officer with U.S
That agency then took Caesar Ramon Martinez Solis
into custody in an immigration detention facility
They were also cited for the traffic violations
including transporting hazardous materials without a permit
but CPR News could not find state-level charges against either man related to the traffic stop
last month and purchased the ammunition at an unidentified gun store in Salt Lake City
They told investigators that the bullets were destined for Pueblo
Amador Gavira (listed as Amador-Gavira in state records) was pulled over in Adams County in December and cited by Brighton Police for driving without a license and insurance
The charges were dismissed by the Adams County District Attorney.
both men appeared in federal court in Denver
where their attorneys argued against detention
in part because they have no criminal history
saying that their lack of connections to Colorado made them a flight risk and ordered them detained while the criminal case plays out
The visas were issued to the men in 2023 and 2022
and were valid to be used for up to 10 years to pass in and out of the U.S
The criminal complaint doesn’t explain how they obtained the visas
“Unlawful Possession of Ammunition by Alien Admitted Under a Nonimmigrant Visa,” is rarely used
CPR News could find only nine other cases in the U.S.
There have been a number of gun-related smuggling charges connected to Mexico in recent weeks
border agents found 8,000 rounds of ammunition hidden in the trunk of a Mexican national driving back across the border to Mexico
that she was paid to buy the ammo in the U.S
state troopers pulled over a vehicle for speeding and
saw boxes of “high caliber ammunition” in the back seat and passenger seat of the car
Ricardo Paez-Quinones told the troopers that he bought the ammunition in Utah for target practice with his girlfriend
though he later admitted that he didn’t own a firearm
Troopers also found a small amount of cocaine in the vehicle
ICE agents found that Paez-Quinones had no legal status to be in the U.S.
having been removed from the country in 2012 and 2014.
Attorney’s office in Colorado said in a press release that the case is now part of Operation Take Back America
which aims “to repel the invasion of illegal immigration
achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs)
and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.”

SYRACUSE — Fremont senior Owen Simkins shook a little shimmy as he swayed on second base during the fourth inning of a prep baseball game Tuesday at Syracuse
Simkins had good reason to strut his stuff following his third hit of the game
a two-run double that chased home his third and fourth RBIs on the afternoon
I was excited after a big hit and decided to celebrate,” Simkins said
“It was a good at-bat and I turned out on top.”
though the Titans added a run in the fifth inning
proved to be enough margin for the victory
“I’m glad I could come out for my team,” Simkins said
The Silverwolves then broke open a competitive game with five runs in the seventh inning
toppling the Titans 12-5 in a Region 1 tussle
Simkins finished the game with four hits (two singles
a double and a triple) and a walk in five at-bats
“Yesterday we were practicing straight fastballs because we knew that’s what (Syracuse pitcher) Dom (Johnatakis) throws
“I came up looking for a fastball … every single pitch I hit was a fastball.”
Senior leadoff hitter Jace Hadley set the table for Simkins
reaching base four times with three singles and a walk
“I love to get my teammates in position to rack up the RBIs,” Hadley said
“If the first pitch of the at-bat is a fastball down the middle
“I’m a way better hitter when I don’t get two strikes on me
Starting pitcher Chase Jones threw the seven-inning complete game for the Silverwolves
scattering nine hits while striking out three and walking one
“It makes you feel good to take a game all the way,” Jones said
my teammates had my back and trusted me to send them down 1-2-3 in the bottom half.”
8-2 Region 1) built a 4-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings
with Simkins delivering an RBI single in the both first and third
3-7) pulled even in the bottom of the third
keyed by a three-run double from third baseman Calder Millard
I got a pretty bad call on a high curveball for a strike
so on my second turn I switched my approach; sat on curveball
crushed it and the left fielder misread it,” Millard said
The tie only lasted until the top of the fourth when Simkins doubled in the deciding runs
Jones put the bad inning behind him and only allowed a run-producing single by Syracuse catcher Caleb Wilson the rest of the day
“There were a lot of things (in the third) that didn’t go our way — bad hops
“I had confidence in me and my teammates and closed them down pretty much the rest of the game
because history will repeat itself; bounce back,” Jones said
Simkins the hitter became Simkins the second baseman
flagging down a hard grounder by Easton Hamblin when Syracuse had loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning
“It was a hard one-hopper and actually got stuck in my glove and I had to whip it out at the last second,” Simkins said
“I was happy to make a play and get us out of that one.”
Johnatakis pitched six innings for the Titans
striking out nine batters with that fastball Fremont was leery of
The Titans opted for sophomore hurler Connor Wilcox in that fateful seventh inning
walking four before Simkins capped his perfect day
“Our pitchers couldn’t find the (strike) zone
He’s (Wilcox) young; he’s lacking confidence right now
We’ve just got to come back and get them tomorrow.”
