Propositions A and B lagged all night among voters in Frisco
which encompasses parts of Collin and Denton counties
propositions A and B were rejected by 60% and 65% of voters
about 59% of voters rejected proposition A and about 64% rejected proposition B
Proposition A would have allowed Frisco to use funds from its Economic Development Corp
for the bulk of the money needed to build what would have been known as the Frisco Center for the Arts

would have authorized the city to raise as much as $160 million in bonds
The measures were hotly debated among candidates vying for two seats on the City Council
Supporters of the project had said the proposed arts center could have been a major draw for Collin County
while detractors have criticized the high costs to build the facility
Plans included a 2,800-seat theater and a community hall with a capacity for about 400 seats
who submitted his ballot Saturday afternoon at Frisco Fire Station 5
“I think it‘s not the right time to do it,” De Guzman said
“I think we should put this money to other areas that we‘re needing.”
City staff and supporters of the project have said bonds issued to build the arts center would not increase property tax rates and that the city will pay off the debt using funds from the city’s Community Development Corp.
The Prosper school district had said it would provide up to $100 million to build the center — a commitment that Greg Bradley
had said would have to be reconsidered if the propositions failed
city officials also announced major partnerships involving Broadway Dallas and Broadway Across America for the programming
All but one sitting member of the city council has publicly supported the project
said she‘s not giving up on her dream of having a performing arts center in the city
“I’m never going to walk away and say that we shouldn’t have an arts center,” Hardin said
“I’ve said it for 20 years and I’m not going to change because of this election.”
She said she is now focusing on the runoff elections for city council candidates for Place 2 and Place 4
“It‘s going to be a huge turning point for anything arts-related in the city,” Hardin said
Burt Thakur and incumbent Tammy Meinershagen were leading with about 43% and 41%
Meinershagen is closely associated with Frisco’s efforts to build a performing arts center
Sai Krishnarajanagar had campaigned against the center
Financial adviser Jared Elad and Gopal Ponangi
who recently served on the Frisco school board
will likely head to runoffs for Place 4 on city council
Elad got about 38% of the vote and Ponangi received just over 25%
If no candidate garners more than half of the votes
the top two candidates will head to a runoff election in June
Frisco voters also decided on 12 charter amendments
which included raises for city’s mayor and council members and language to be in line with state law
The city’s charter was last amended in 2019
more than 60% of voters rejected the amendment that would provide raises for elected officials

At a protest in the parking lot of David Kuykendall Stadium, Carter pulled out his phone and dialed Jeff Metcalf, the father whose 17-year-old son was fatally stabbed in the stadium’s bleachers weeks earlier — a case that has sparked racist discourse online and thrust two grieving families into the national spotlight
Carter wanted Jake Lang to hear from Metcalf himself
after Lang came to Frisco from Florida to rally around the death of Metcalf’s son
said Metcalf’s son was now a symbol of a “violent Black culture” being perpetrated against “white America.”
“You’re trying to create more race divide than bridging the gap,” Metcalf told Lang over speakerphone
addressing Lang and the protest held by his organization
Crime in The NewsRead the crime and public safety news your neighbors are talking about
“I do not condone anything you do,” the father continued
asking Lang to remove his son’s school portrait from the group’s website
The rebuke from Metcalf — who confirmed to The News he was on the other side of the phone call — marked the father’s sharpest pushback yet against the racially-charged narratives that have proliferated online since the April 2 stabbing
The day after his son’s death, he appeared on Fox News to urge the public to avoid speculation along racial lines. Austin Metcalf was white. The teenager facing a murder charge in connection to the stabbing, Karmelo Anthony
he ran a group called Black Men for Bernie
For more than an hour before the phone call
Lang stood atop a parked bus in the stadium lot
The vehicle was covered with images from American history
including a photo of Trump taken shortly after last year’s assassination attempt in Butler
From his perch, Lang, who was accused of taking part in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, stood beside Philip Anderson
a Mesquite resident who was also arrested on multiple charges of breaching the U.S
Lang and Anderson delivered speeches suggesting Black Americans are disproportionately violent toward white Americans because of what he called “white hate.” Lang is white
Protesters voiced anger over Anthony’s release on bond, calling for him to be “put back in prison until trial.” Anthony had been initially held in Collin County jail on a $1 million bond, which was later lowered to $250,000 by the judge presiding over the case
His bond conditions require he wear an ankle monitor
remain on house arrest and be with an adult at all times
Frisco police have not said that race played a role in the stabbing case, nor did the responding officers whose accounts were included in a police report obtained by The News
Anthony told officers he acted in self-defense
Roughly two dozen counterprotesters stood away from the bus

a police spokesperson confirmed in a statement
stood before a row of television cameras on Thursday — their first public appearance to speak on their son’s case — to confront misinformation circulating about their family and urge the public to allow their son due process under the law
Jeff Metcalf showed up at the news conference but was asked to leave by Dallas police
Two people at Saturday’s protest were arrested
One man was pepper-sprayed by one of the arrestees but declined treatment
The charges the two arrested would face were pending Saturday afternoon
He declined to provide additional information
directing reporters to file an open records request under the Texas Public Information Act
The News’ requests were pending Saturday afternoon
Dozens of police officers were present at the protest
Lang said Frisco police were spending more than $50,000 in overtime to “ensure a safe protest.”
The dollar amount provided to Lang was a “rough estimate,” Cottingham said in a statement to The News
the amount spent to keep them safe varies,” he said
Lang did not stand trial for the charges related to Jan
and was pardoned earlier this year by Trump while awaiting prosecution
He is now running to fill the Florida Senate seat vacated by Marco Rubio after he was appointed U.S
was also arrested on multiple charges related to the Capitol attack
Lang asked Metcalf whether he would stand beside him at a news conference or agree to a one-on-one interview to “talk about this issue that is larger than” his son
whom Lang suggested would’ve been “one of our strongest voices if he was alive today.”

was released from jail Monday after his bond was significantly lowered
Anthony was released from the Collin County jail about 4:20 p.m
and put on house arrest with an ankle monitor
After an hourlong hearing at the county courthouse in McKinney on Monday morning
state District Judge Angela Tucker lowered Anthony’s bond from $1 million to $250,000
Tucker said Anthony will only be permitted to leave home with her permission — namely trips to his attorney’s office and meetings in court — and will need to be with an adult at all times
He is also not to contact the Metcalf family
Factors considered in court Monday included Anthony’s age
lack of a criminal history and ties to the community
a football coach and a manager from one of his part-time jobs who showed up to the hearing
On the Metcalf family’s side of the courtroom

told reporters after the hearing that his office is focused on next steps: reviewing Frisco police’s investigation and presenting the case to a grand jury
which will determine whether Anthony will be indicted — and face trial
“What we are concerned about as prosecutors is justice
and so we will go where the facts lead us,” Willis said
Willis said he considers the case to be a “terrible tragedy” not only for Frisco
but the Collin County community as a whole
“It is the most unnatural thing for a parent to lose their child,” he said
“The Anthony family has had a different kind of loss
said he feels the judge’s decision was fair
Howard had asked during the hearing for Anthony’s bond to be lowered to $150,000
“It is not supposed to be an instrument of oppression,” Howard said
It’s supposed to ensure that a person shows up to court
complies with all conditions and it’s supposed to keep the community safe.”
Howard declined to delve into the specifics of the case
but said there are “two sides to every story” and that after a full investigation
he is confident “the truth will come out.”
“Every Texan has the right to defend themselves when they reasonably fear for their life,” he said
The hearing Monday morning — a little less than two weeks after the fatal stabbing — was packed
About 10 minutes before the hearing was expected to start
guards turned away a woman who identified herself as the mother of a friend to the victim
saying all of the public seating available inside the courtroom was taken
but that the family moved to North Texas a few years ago for a “better life” and “better opportunities.”

He added that his son is also a “great big brother” to three younger siblings
Andrew Anthony said he had to take an indefinite leave of absence from his job as a finance manager at a car dealership
He explained he is the sole provider for his household
an online fundraiser for Karmelo Anthony had surpassed $415,000
When asked by Collin County’s First Assistant District Attorney Bill Wirskye why that money wasn’t already being used to get Karmelo Anthony out of jail
Andrew Anthony said the money from the site could not immediately be accessed
Howard later clarified the funds will also be needed for Anthony’s long-term defense
a team of investigators and other “man power.”
“It would be disingenuous to say there isn’t money,” Howard told the judge in his closing statement
Wirskye argued $1 million was “not unreasonable on its face,” calling the killing a “brutal murder.”
“I don’t know why we’re here,” he said of the hearing
Our community needs confidence in its court system.”

stabbed Metcalf once in the chest and ran away
Anthony later told responding officers he was defending himself
I told him not to” while “crying hysterically,” according to the affidavit
The affidavit said Anthony also asked if Metcalf was going to be OK
was pronounced dead at a hospital less than an hour after the stabbing
In a written statement released last week
Anthony’s family said they are “sincerely saddened that a life was lost” and asked the public not to rush “to judgment before all the facts and evidence are presented.”
“This will certainly be a long road ahead,” the statement reads
we ask for prayers for both families and we ask for your patience and respect for the legal process as we seek the truth.”
Jeff Metcalf, Austin Metcalf’s father, previously told The Dallas Morning News he feels for the family of the alleged assailant

Correction: This story has been updated to reflect accurate vote totals for Tammy Meinershagen and Burt Thakur from the city of Frisco
Correction: A previous version of this story stated Frisco ISD races were headed for a runoff
Frisco ISD winners are selected by a plurality
Frisco voters appeared to roundly reject a $160 million bond for a performing arts center
Propositions A and B would have gone toward a center with space for both large- and small-scale local and regional productions
and include a 2,800-seat performance hall to accommodate Broadway performances and a 300-400-seat community hall
Frisco voters also cast ballots for city council members and three Frisco ISD school board trustees
according to preliminary election results on Saturday night with nearly all vote centers reporting
The Place 2 race appeared headed for a runoff with incumbent Tammy Meinershagen
Burt Thakur and Sai Krishnarajanagar all failing to garner more than 50% of the vote
The top two vote-getters were Thakur with about 43% and Meinershagen with about 41%
Meinershagen has been a council member since 2022 and serves as the Frisco city council’s deputy Mayor Pro Tem. Her bio on the Frisco city council website lists her experience as the chair of the council’s governance committee and vice chair of the city’s legislative committee
She was also named a Texas Municipal League Fellow and serves the city as primary member on the Regional Transportation Council with the North Texas Council of Governments
Her campaign website touts Meinershagen’s efforts to lower Frisco’s property tax rate for three consecutive years and support for Frisco’s Rail District
which aims to make the city’s downtown “a walkable destination for the community.”
developing Frisco’s arts and culture scene and sustainability as priorities for a second term
“Frisco is on a successful trajectory right now
but we can't allow our city to become a flash in the pan or a ‘has-been,’” she said
“We must build a city that stands the test of time.”
Thakur, an engineer and Navy veteran, was the Jeopardy! champion during Alex Trebek’s final season as host according to The Denton Record Chronicle
He ran in the Texas Congressional District 26 GOP primary and lost the nomination to Brandon Gill
He also ran for Congress in California’s 25th Congressional District in a 2022 primary
None of the five candidates in this race reached more than 50% of the vote
and the race would likely head to a runoff between Jared Elad and Gopal Ponangi
Elad is married to Frisco ISD school board trustee Stephanie Elad, who appeared likely to win her race. He is the founder and wealth advisor at Diamond Capital Wealth
He lists fiscal responsibility and transparency as one of the issues he would prioritize if elected on his campaign website
“With more than 16 years of experience as a financial advisor
I have a strong track record of managing budgets
and helping individuals and businesses reach their financial goals,” Elad said on his website
Other priorities he lists on his website include community friendly development
Ponangi, on his campaign website, told the nonpartisan voting initiative Collin County Votes that his policy priorities include public safety
Suresh Manduva was elected with about 40% of the vote according to Frisco ISD
Manduva listed his occupation as software engineer on his application for a place on the ballot. He announced his intent to run for the school board on Facebook
including Ponangi and Frisco City Council member John Keating
Renee Sample was elected with about 48% of the vote
Sample serves on the city of Frisco’s Multicultural Committee board. She was also the past president of the Frisco Education Foundation
which provides Frisco ISD students financial resources through educational programs
The Dallas Morning News’ editorial board endorsed Sample for the seat
“Sample earned our recommendation because of the greater breadth of her experience,” the editorial board wrote
Stephanie Elad was reelected with about 46% of the vote
The Dallas Morning News’ editorial board endorsed her for another term
citing Elad’s work on addressing the district’s declining enrollment
“Elad supports the Access Frisco initiative, a smart plan that allows a small number of students from nearby districts to attend Frisco schools,” the board wrote
Elad’s website lists several endorsements from local representatives
Texas House members Matt Shaheen and Jared Patterson and Texas state board of education member Pam Little
She also has endorsements from the Collin County GOP
Collin County Conservative Republicans and the Denton County Conservative Coalition
Shulman has a degree in music education and is the director of product management for Ultimate Drill Book
He also serves as the arts in education chair for the Frisco ISD PTA
and innovation as things he’d prioritize if elected

During late last week's (and weekend's!) SAVOR
we kept thinking that we couldn't believe this was the festival's first year.
But the folks at OMNI PGA Frisco are no neophytes. They know exactly what they're doing. So in late April, during a press conference, when they said they wanted to bring the biggest food
This is exactly what they were going to do.
a four-course experience featuring expertly paired signature cocktails
there was the Fork & Fire Reception with some of the country's most famous chefs
The SAVOR Celebrity Golf Invitational got underway on May 3
there was the Best of Texas Reception with the state's top culinary talent and an intimate performance by Midland
The festival closed on May 4 with the Margaritas & Mariachis Celebrity Brunch at 10 a.m.
a Tex-Mex-inspired feast featuring award-winning chef Aarón Sánchez.
The celebrity golf tournament added even more star power and excitement to the weekend
drawing a crowd of notable figures from film
Among the participants were actor and winemaker Kurt Russell
Good Morning America co-host and NFL Hall of Famer Michael Strahan
former NFL star Jim Jeffcoat and legendary actor Dennis Quaid
Celebrities didn’t just stay on the course — they also mingled with attendees throughout the day
enjoying the diverse food and drink offerings
The tournament took place at Fields Ranch West
par-72 course designed by legendary golf architect Beau Welling
the course offers a dynamic experience that both delights and challenges players of all levels
The first-place team — Nicole Peterson
Kevin Curran and chef Onwuachi — each took home a $1,000 gift certificate for custom Lucchese boots
Adam DeArmond and Ross Butler were awarded classic Stetson hats
Country music’s Midland brought their signature blend of vintage country swagger and modern flair to an intimate crowd
delivering a high-energy set packed with fan favorites like “Drinkin’ Problem” and “Cheatin’ Songs.” The trio kept the party going with crowd-pleasing tributes to country icons
including a boot-stomping rendition of Brooks & Dunn’s “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” that had fans dancing the night away
offering a thoughtfully curated experience that celebrated Texas’s rich culinary identity
Guests had the opportunity to indulge in a range of standout dishes
such as chef Fearing’s spring-perfect shrimp tacos topped with a refreshing mango slaw
and a luxurious caviar presentation courtesy of the Michelin-recommended Mister Charles
Chef Shackleford of Harvest at the Masonic served up a bold
Texas-style plate featuring brisket pastrami
Now this is a flavorful tribute to Lone Star pride
no Texas food celebration would be complete without meat
Chef Vana of The Heritage Table served a flavorful lamb sausage accompanied by a silky carrot purée
while Trick Rider’s chef Rojas offered up melt-in-your-mouth smoked beef rib that had guests lining up for seconds
wowed guests with a richly flavored beef cheek taco — one of the most talked-about dishes of the event
Adding a playful and nostalgic touch to the evening was the Dr Pepper float — a beloved Texas classic — topped with an ethereal
edible cloud of Dr Pepper–flavored foam
It was the perfect sweet finish to a night that captured the essence of Texas through flavor
Some food and wine festivals can feel overwhelming — and that may not be a bad thing
the food and drink events were about savoring flavors
We saw guests chat with chefs and take selfies
Another thing that made SAVOR so special was the caliber of chefs on hand
All the local chefs were fantastic — best of the best in Dallas and beyond
The chefs that SAVOR flew in are among the best of the best in the entire country.
is on Time's Most Influential People of 2025 list
And good luck trying to get a reservation at his New York restaurant Tatiana
serving up delicious hamachi guisado (yellowtail
one of the best bartenders on planet Earth
some of which were the absolute best cocktails I've ever had
you'd find yourself trying dishes that you'll think about for a very
like chef Beau MacMillan's show-stopping seared dayboat scallops with banana
and could’ve easily eaten five more.)
We didn't stay on property as we're local to North Texas
but did meet people who had flown in just for the event
We could imagine enjoying the resort and golf
and capping off the days with unforgettable culinary evenings
bringing a fitting close to the festival.
