FRUITLAND PARK
– Mike Cox was watching TV at home with his family in their Fruitland Park trailer when he heard the blood-curdling screams from his 6-year-old son’s bedroom
“I’ve never heard a scream like that before from her and him
all I could see (were) the flames,” Cox said

I made it right here and the flames were already up and they singed my hair and I just turned around and ran out and to check on my son.”

I just wanted to take his pain away so he didn’t have to deal with it,” he continued

Cox is overcome with emotion thinking about the 6-year-old boy
“He shouldn’t have to go through something like that
That much pain and that much suffering,” Cox said
Lake County Fire Rescue and the Leesburg Fire Department put out the fire
The fire marshal told Cox it was an electrical fire caused by a fuse box in his son’s bedroom
I’m sleeping in the car and at the hospital because I got nowhere to go,” he said
Cox’s son is now being treated at UF Health Shands Burn Center in Gainesville
he’s got to have surgery tomorrow to have cadaver skin put on him to try to help heal his skin until they can do a skin graft on him
and he’s going to be in there at least a month if not longer
so they don’t know how many surgeries he’s going to have to have
how long he’s going to be in there,” Cox added
and his 74-year-old father who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease are without a home
“I don’t think he grasps what has happened
I want to go home.’ And I don’t have a home to bring him to,” Cox stated
A family friend set up a GoFundMe to support the Cox family through this difficult time
Cox also said his son loves Mickey Mouse and Bluey
and currently doesn’t even have a blanket of his own at the hospital

A Fruitland Park man was arrested after wrestling with officers to the point of being tased in the back when questioned about his suspicious behavior
An officer was headed east on West Berkman Street near the intersection with College Avenue when he spotted a lone figure dressed in all black walking in the roadway at 12:40 a.m
according to an arrest report from the Fruitland Park Police Department
later identified as 26-year-old Jeremiah Christopher Blair
he saw his sweatshirt hood up and a black headwrap covering his face
The officer watched Blair in his rearview mirror
seeing him briefly walk in the center of the road before crossing over to the eastbound lanes
the officer was familiar with the residents who lived in the houses on that section of the block
none of which matched Blair’s physical attributes
As the officer turned his patrol vehicle around
The report noted there was a sidewalk on the westbound side of the roadway that was clear and free of road blockings
Blair committed the pedestrian violation of walking in the roadway when sidewalks were available and traveling on the opposite side of the roadway from oncoming traffic
The officer conducted a pedestrian stop as a result
The officer told Blair he was stopping him for walking on the wrong side of the road
to which Blair stated there was no traffic
The officer stated it was still a violation
and he was required to come speak with law enforcement
but he stated he did not have to give it to the officer
The officer explained he was indeed required to do so
to which Blair kept walking away and said he did not
The officer stated the violation and that he was required to provide it
as this was a lawful stop for a traffic violation
He immediately tensed and began to pull away
Another officer then arrived on scene and helped detain Blair
Both officers instructed Blair to stop resisting and put his hands behind his back numerous times
to which he continued to tense his muscles
One of the officers next swept his leg to redirect Blair to the ground to detain him
Blair continued his behavior and put his arms and left leg under his body
One officer asked the other to remove Blair’s leg from under his body to get control of his arms and safely detain him without him balling up
The officer did so to no avail as Blair wrestled with law enforcement
an officer took out his taser and said he would use it if Blair continued to resist
Despite multiple commands and warnings that he would be tased
but it did not deter him as he continued his behavior
A K-9 unit officer hit Blair’s side to distract him and get his arms from under his body
the officers were able to overpower Blair’s attempts to get away
Lake County Fire Rescue got to the scene to assess Blair
They were able to remove one of the probes but advised that he would need to be taken to UF Health Leesburg Hospital
to have the other taken out due to its proximity to his spine
EMS then took him there while an officer followed suit
Blair stated the officer stopped him “just to get his number” and yelled that he was just playing Pokémon Go
the report noted he had Cash App open on his phone when he was initially stopped
He was also headed in the opposite direction of his residence
Blair began pressing buttons on the machines
pulling on his wires and hitting his handcuffs against the bed rail
The officer gave him numerous commands to stop due to the cuffs scraping the railings and the buttons on the machine potentially breaking
Several nurses and hospital staff told him to stop
advising he was “bored” and did not want to
The officer then read Blair his rights so he could ask questions
seemingly invoking his rights to remain silent
The circumstances still gave the officer probable cause for his arrest
The report noted he was wearing three shirts and two pairs of pants that would allow him to easily remove clothes and change his description
a common tactic used to avoid detection upon completion of criminal activity
Blair was charged with loitering and prowling and two counts of resisting officer without violence
He was transported to Lake County Jail with bond set at $1,500
FRUITLAND PARK, Fla. – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and first lady Casey DeSantis announced a program to bring Hope Florida to school districts at an event at Fruitland Park Elementary School in Lake County Wednesday
Hope Florida is a program created by the DeSantis’ that is meant to connect people who need help with nongovernment resources such as faith-based groups
using trained state employees as “navigators.”
The program originally started in the Department of Children and Families
but has since expanded to other state agencies
DeSantis said Education Commissioner Manny Diaz was using Hope Florida navigators to help connect more than 450 families to resources for children with learning disabilities since last October
He also teased utilizing Hope Florida more in childcare spaces in the “coming days and weeks.”
DeSantis speaks to News 6 about Hope Florida in the video below]
Then DeSantis announced that the Department of Education was working on a pilot program that identifies and trains Hope Florida liaisons at schools in select school districts
“Orange County was the first school district
to identify and train a liaison,” DeSantis said
is now the second district that is going to identify and train a liaison in every school
for stepping up and helping to spearhead this great expansion.”
then what good are they?” said first lady Casey DeSantis
moms of children who have unique abilities
And when they find out that their child has a unique ability
And so what we’re trying to do is simplify the process.”
The announcement comes at a time of controversy for the DeSantis’ and Hope Florida
Florida House lawmakers conducted a probe earlier this year of Hope Florida Foundation
the charitable nonprofit that is supposed to help Hope Florida navigators and workers
Republican leaders in the Florida House accuse now-Florida State Attorney James Uthmeier
of using $10 million that was donated to the foundation to fund political attack campaigns against the 2024 constitutional amendment on recreational marijuana
The money had been donated as part of a legal settlement in a Medicaid overbilling lawsuit
[Hope Florida: A timeline of how a DeSantis-backed state charity was accused of wrongdoing]
but said he was convinced that Uthmeier and an attorney conspired as part of a ploy to misuse the $10 million
“I’ll leave the rest of the investigation up to the FBI and Department of Justice,” Andrade said
DeSantis called the probe a smear and accused the lawmakers of attacking the first lady
has said that oversight of Hope Florida was not over and “all options are still on the table.”

– A winning Powerball ticket sold in Fruitland last week has yet to be claimed
Maryland Lottery officials say the winning $100,000 Powerball ticket was sold on March 19th at the Fruitland Walmart
Lottery officials urge anyone who purchased a ticket from this location to check their tickets as soon as possible
The weather came in nasty like it can this time of year on Monday and tried hard to put a damper on our week
but it is hard to hold us back in Augusta when we have so many guests to entertain and fun to be had
With a good-looking forecast for the weekend
and the show of flowering plants is really fantastic this year
Golf fans from all over the world are in town and Augusta loves to show off what the Garden City has to offer
And as the Masters is the premier golf tournament in the world
plant lovers should know that those rolling hills off Washington Road weren’t always meant for chasing dimpled white balls around the landscape
The hallowed grounds of the Augusta National Golf Club were originally a nursery
Campbell Vaughn: Flowers are at their peak, so enjoy the color explosion while you can
Dennis Redmond purchased the 315-acre property and named it Fruitland
apples and many other species of trees and shrubs
Redmond even started building a large house that he named Fruitland Manor
the father and son team of Belgium immigrants
moved to Augusta and purchased a 50% stake in Fruitland
One year later the Berckmans became 100% owners of the nursery and purchased some surrounding land to expand
They also finished construction of Fruitland Manor
This was the beginning of the Fruitland Nurseries
and the Fruitland Manor is the current clubhouse for the Augusta National Golf Club
Fruitland Nurseries boomed until the death of the Berckmans patriarch in 1910
The family tried to sustain the nursery for another few years
The property changed hands and eventually ended up in the hands of the now Augusta National Golf Club in 1931
Some of the Berckmans family even came back to help landscape the course
All 18 holes of the course are named after nursery plants
which is a great tribute to the history of this storied property
are the most famous ornamentals on the grounds and rightfully so
The famous plant for Hole 13 isn’t just one type of azalea on the course but many different types of rhododendrons that give a wide variation of colorful blooms at different times during the spring
When the dogwoods and azaleas bloom at the same time in Augusta
it is hard to beat the look of white and pink dogwood blooms with the bright colors of the azaleas to compliment the many acres of perennial rye grass
Hole 3 at Augusta National is the Flowering Peach
This is a fun one because Fruitland Nurseries produced over 300 kinds of peaches which led to Mr
Berckmans being called the father of peach culture in the South
That is really saying something that the father of peaches in the Peach State was growing that tasty fruit right there where our favorite golfers tee it up every spring in Augusta
The famous tee shot across Rae’s Creek in the heart of Amen Corner is hole 12 which is the Golden Bell
Golden Bell is another name for forsythia (Forsythia x intermedia) and is a great heritage plant in the South
Forsythia is usually a late winter bloomer with small golden yellow flowers blooming up the stems all the way to the ground
The entire plant turns into an electric show of yellow usually before the Golden Bell’s leaves emerge
Chinese Fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) is the name of hole 14
This needled evergreen tree is only found sparsely in nurseries but should be used more often
The deep dark needles are very sharp and not much fun to have to rake
Yellow jasmine (Gelsemium sempervirens) graces the course as hole 8’s namesake
this native vine is sometimes challenging to incorporate in a planting plan because it tends to be a little leggy
the open natural wooded areas come alive with bright

LEESBURG — Growing up, cooking soul food was a family affair for Darrell Kelley as much as Sunday church
Big dinners after service were a tradition
and Kelley told the Daily Commercial last month that he's putting a lot of soul and heart into his new Fruitland Park restaurant
Soul Delicious is a new chapter in Kelley's professional and culinary evolution
and stayed in operation as Soul Delicious until 2019
a marked improvement from the Legends days in the establishment
The characteristic wood-paneled hexagonal ceiling looked completely refinished with contemporary chandeliers and fans adding clean elegance to the room
Owner Kelley is a larger-than-life figure whose photo was on just about every wall
an advertisement for his album and other pics filled the 360-degree dining room
he was absent for our visit and would return at night to celebrate his birthday
It's our hope that he enjoyed his day off but is serious about overseeing the operation of his establishment
There seemed to be some opening week hiccups
Popular food items had run out including oxtails
And don't visit if you're in a rush while the restaurant gets its bearings
Some servers seemed annoyed and tired and didn't make us feel all that welcome
he demonstrates a knack for texture and crispiness on the outside
the fries had an exceptional crispiness and flavor
The baked mac and cheese had those delicious buttery-crispy edges baked macaroni should have and merit the extra $1 it costs
and the collard greens were some of the best I had tasted
The menu offers a variety of main courses and sides
but only one side is included with lunch and dinner meals
We visited while the restaurant was still getting its bearings
Daily Commercial asked servers at the front about the restaurant
was enthusiastic about her new job and said that Soul Delicious' staff and management
oxtails and fried chicken are the favorites
"And the sides would be mac and cheese," she added
"Collard greens and hams are the biggest hit here
I feel like everybody loves that one the most."

“We want everyone to come see us one last time,” said Rob Sykes

Saturday will be the last time Sykes locks the front doors
“The community stepped up and supported us a lot when they could
but at the end of the day it just wasn’t quite enough to keep us going the way we needed to be,” Sykes said
This eatery is truly a family affair and a one-man show
It’s named after Sykes’ daughter Aubrey Quinn
and the rose logo is a nod to his other daughter
Keeping family at the center was always Sykes’ mission
“Carry out and delivery is growing in this industry
but I wanted to be able to go back in time a little bit when people went to the place on the corner
hung out and saw their friends and family and enjoyed the place … Just the cumulative of seeing people happy and enjoying themselves is what did it for me,” said Sykes
Sykes said his 14 months behind the grill and front counter
times are tough not just for restaurant owners
but there are going to be a lot of places in this community in the next six months that we’re going to see not making it,” Sykes predicted
Sykes is hoping the community will step up to support small businesses more than they already do
He said that is the key to any small business’ success
“I want people to support their community
There is going to be somebody after me who is just a dad

FRUITLAND PARK — Some areas in Lake County are rural and a little far from emergency care facilities
especially in the northern areas of the county
but a new ER in Fruitland Park constructed by AdventHealth might be a lifesaver for many who live in rural northwestern Lake
AdventHealth Waterman will begin construction on a freestanding emergency department in Fruitland Park in April
"Streamlining access to health career" was listed in the Top 5 priorities for Lake County by the state's health department for public health, according to a 2022 Florida Health report

this property also gives us the space for future growth
When will the facility open?Expected to open in early 2026
According to a press release from the hospital
the new AdventHealth ER will "bring essential emergency care services to the rapidly growing community of Fruitland Park and the surrounding areas of northern Lake County."

Idaho — The debate over whether taxpayer dollars should fund what many call "school choice" continues to divide lawmakers and educators in Idaho

He argues that the push for expanding school choice could divert much-needed resources from public schools

and thorough system of schools for Idahoans and that’s our public schools,” Winston said
The conversation gained momentum following Governor Brad Little’s State of the State address
in which he proposed an additional $150 million for the state’s public schools
A third of that funding would be earmarked for expanding school choice programs
“I recognize the growing desire to expand school choice
especially for students with unique physical or developmental conditions
I am recommending $50 million to further expand education options for Idaho families,” Governor Little said
worries that the money designated for public education may actually end up funding private education options
“They say it’s not going to cost school districts anything
if you’re setting a $50 million price tag for private education—whether that be a tax rebate
or a savings account—it’s still $50 million of the budget that then is not going to public schools,” Winston said
Winston added that his district was underfunded by nearly $650,000 last year
forcing them to make cuts to critical programs like special education
“Those are the things that the legislators really need to think about
and I think when you talk about thorough education
He emphasized that the Fruitland School District is just one of many struggling with school funding issues across Idaho
We need to continue; we’ll keep on striving to improve and do a better job,” Winston said

Idaho — "That's literally the place that he was buried."
That's what a newly posted YouTube video shows Stacey Wondra telling police about missing 5-year-old
The video was taken in the Washington County Jail back in 2022
which is where Wondra was serving time for an unrelated charge
like closer to the house," said Stacey Wondra
RELATED: Fruitland Police are testing for DNA in case of missing boy Michael Vaughan
police were flooded with hundreds of tips but the young boy was never found
Stacey Wondra was also named a suspect in Michael Vaughan's disappearance
The suspects' former backyard is within walking distance of where Michael was last seen
the same day authorities dug up and searched Sarah Wondra's yard
"You're 10 thousand million percent positive he was back here in this backyard?" police asked Stacey Wondra at the time
so that's why we don't want to leave here unless we have Michael," said police over the video call
Yet after a week of searching the premises
"It just doesn't make sense why he wouldn't
why he's not in the area that you guys are digging in," said Wondra while on the video call with police
Sarah could have done something with [the body] when I wasn't home
Knowing that she knew that I had seen where she was digging," said Wondra
this family has suffered way too long," added Wondra
In a statement to Idaho News 6 on Wednesday
Michael's mother Brandi told us: "I want answers
Our family is tired of these monsters not telling the truth
and people in this very community are helping them remain quiet."
