Game Recap: Baseball | 5/4/2025 5:02:00 PM
– Cal State Fullerton's late attempt at a comeback fell short
dropping game three to UC Santa Barbara 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field
With the loss the Titans drop to 25-22 on the year and 16-8 in Big West play
Trailing 4-1 in the eighth inning, Fullerton mounted a late comeback. With runners on first and second, Matthew Bardowell doubled to right field to score Eli Lopez from second base and cut the deficit to 4-2
Andrew Kirchner immediately followed with a single to left center field, bringing home Carter Johnstone to make it a one run game, 4-3. The Titans sent the game-tying run home on the play in pinch runner Jack Burke
The Titans fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning. However, Jayden Harper stranded two Gaucho runners on base to limit the damage to just one run
Fullerton quickly responded with one run in the bottom half of the first on a Kirchner double to bring home Johnstone from second base
Kirchner bounced back after two rough games to open the series
The junior has a conference-leading 58 RBI this season

The Titans were shut down from the first inning until the eighth in large part due to UCSB's Jackson Flora who allowed just one run on three hits in 6.1 innings pitched while striking out a career-high 12 batters
Flora earned the win to improve to 5-2 on the year
Chad Gurnea (0-1) drew the loss for the Titans after giving up one run on three hits in 2.1 innings while striking out three batters
Gurnea entered the game in relief in the third inning and got the Titans out of a first and second no out jam

killed by FPD a month earlier; Alejandro Campos-Rios
Over the past 13 months Fullerton police have killed three Latino men
all experiencing some sort of mental problem
Back in a 12-month period from mid-2011 to mid-2012
Anaheim police killed seven young men – that was a big enough deal that it led to riots
modest reforms (including OC’s first bodycams)
and a Police Review Board (albeit toothless)
given how much smaller Fullerton is than Anaheim
these last 13 months there have been just as bad
you’re gonna need this guide to keep track of these last three FPD fatalities
but still he kept to himself and didn’t bother anybody
This past Easter morning a little after midnight
Jose MAY have been holding a “smoldering cardboard box” – at least that’s what the police say
And they say that when they tried to arrest him (for who knows what
holding smoldering cardboard?) he was “erratic and uncooperative.” and resisted being arrested
Jose’s little brother Mike (40) had just left the park on his bike
when he saw a bunch of FPD cars speeding toward the park
he saw a “stack” of what Mike estimates as 8-10 cops on top of his brother
Other Fullerton cops stood in a circle around Jose
whose face was already “bruised and puffy” from the blows
(Makes the gang of six Fullerton cops who beat & suffocated Kelly Thomas to death in 2011 – three active
three watching – look pretty small!)
asking “What are you doing to him?” some of the cops rushed over and tackled him
at least giving Jose a brief chance to breathe
from where he saw officers put a bag over Jose’s head
One of them said “Because he’s spitting on us,” Mike said “It’s probably just all his blood!” So they pulled Mike out of that car and stuck him in a different car facing the other way
where he couldn’t see what they were doing to his brother any more
Succumbing to the beatings and the suffocation (knees and bag)
Jose surprised the poor Fullerton cops by displaying signs of a “medical emergency” and dying
His cause of death has still not been released by the coroner’s office
and neither the police or the hospital will tell Jose’s family what happened
Meanwhile Mike was arrested for “resisting arrest” and “entering a park after closing hours.” When they took him to the station
Mike says they were laughing and slapping each other on the back
Something is deeply wrong with the culture of the Fullerton Police Department
We went to the family’s Lemon Park vigil on April 27
always helping the homeless before he ever knew he’d become one of them
Family members of other recent police victims were there as well
Jose’s sister Mary discovers the only way to get a response
How FPD responds to info requests from family members of their victims: “You were not involved.”
Meanwhile this killing reminds us a lot of the killing of Kelly Thomas by another gang of Fullerton cops 14 years ago
The two guiltiest of those cops were removed from the force
and Kelly’s mother and father got settlements
but there should have been jail time for the killers
there should have been consequences for the cops who stood there letting it happen and holding back the crowd
and there should have been a lot more reform
Later this week we will tell the stories of Pedro Garcia (killed by FPD this past March) and Alejandro Campos-Rios (killed by FPD in March of 2024.)
But Danny Hughes said those who spoke of a Culture of Corruption were misinformed or lying
Did you get the statements from Mike from the Register article
The Register article had some good stuff from Mike
but I got more from talking to him and his sister Mary at the April 27 vigil
Take the Narranjo case lightly when you read it
The brother Mike hated cops all his life because he’s made horrible choices his whole life
That’s a reason he’s homeless and his beloved sister Mary want nothing to do with hint why she never posts or talks about him
She never posted about Jose her “twin” either nor helped him when he was homeless
Mikes always been a trouble maker all his life I’d never believe anything that comes out of his mouth
But this family now asking for 25K when any $ should be going to his kids if he even has that many kids not his family who wants to show up now
She has maybe 8 of the same photos she keeps posting thus is all for show
This family didn’t help him when he really needed it
Shame on them and shame on the brother and sister and mom for acting like they care now they’re right about one thing God will reveal the truth he’s going to reveal their true colors and how that brother has caused more trouble and likes for that family more than anybody

But he sure thinks he's both a big tough guy and a rebel
I don’t think James Mai has ever been in a mosh pit
when Janet Nguyen really pissed off a lot of the Little Saigon community by politicizing Black…
but I got more from talking to him and his sister…

who has brought her business honors experience as an undergraduate at Cal State Fullerton to bear in her role as an internal auditor for JP Morgan Chase in New York City
she collaborates with auditors from across the company

This latest position follows a career trajectory for Metwale that includes interning at the Government Accountability Office in Washington

I had thought that there had been plain-clothed Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at Cal State Fullerton
telling them to look out for ICE the next day if they could and to stay at home if they couldn't
afraid and uncertain about the day to come
I was relieved to see an email from CSUF officials addressing this rumored ICE presence
judging by what I've read in the CSUF subreddit
It is because of my own dissatisfaction over our school's response to these rumors that I am writing
Our school administration's email did address the central issue of ICE's presence
there was only a K9 and a single Department of Homeland Security agent on campus Wednesday
and their presence was in no way related to ICE
The email also helpfully provided a link to campus immigration resources
I have no problem with those parts of the email
What I have a problem with is this: "We strongly urge everyone to verify information through official university sources before acting on social media posts or unconfirmed reports." On its face
much less any college student or faculty member
oppose the idea that people should double-check what they write before posting
Yet Wednesday's events did not happen under normal circumstances
People were not merely "acting on social media posts or unconfirmed reports." People were acting in an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty
The Trump administration has both detained lawful permanent residents and deported them
and four student visas have been revoked at CSUF
it is the duty of our campus leaders to keep us informed
The first official statement about the DHS agent — who they were and why they were on campus — was issued by our campus police just before midnight
much too late to preempt any of the rumors that transformed this one DHS agent and K9 into a full-on ICE presence that was there not only on Wednesday
and President Ronald Rochon have openly acknowledged their contribution to Wednesday and Thursday's events
But we wouldn't know that if we just read the administration's official update from Thursday
we would be left with the impression that it was our fault for being misinformed
I write here that we should acknowledge the school administration's "campus update" as what it is: a thinly veiled attempt to shift blame onto students and faculty
I further write here that our students and faculty are blameless
Instead of criticizing how our fellow Titans responded to rumors of ICE
When it looked like our fellow Titans were facing an onslaught
We communicated to each other the danger we saw
When the world looked like it was coming for our friends
Our campus administration might think what we did on Wednesday and Thursday was irresponsible or that it was overdramatic
think it was one of the most American things I've seen

FFA chose “Metamorphosis” for the theme and name of the event due to the clothing pieces’ connection with nature and new transformations
FFA is a student-run organization that aims to promote student individuality and representation through fashion
third-year marketing major and member of the FFA’s public relations committee
said that the Los Angeles fires were the inspiration behind “Metamorphosis.”
we just wanted to celebrate Earth again and the transformation of life,” Rodriguez said
“So that was the only thing that we were thinking about
The models confidently strutted and walked the runway with their looks designed by the student designers

A majority of the designers who put together the outfits were on the committee
first-year business entrepreneurship major and member of the FFA TikTok committee
participated in the event by being a designer
The inspiration behind his catalog was a mixture of bringing two eras into one outfit
“I’m incorporating ‘70s fashion with new day fashion
so I’m including more of a baggy look instead of that tight look,” Gonzalez said
The models that were the canvases of the designers’ art were local models cast by the FFA
“We did a modeling casting call and a lot of them are local models or local talents that just wanted to come out,” Rodriguez said
some have never even done this (and) some have been doing this.”
Not only did the event display creative and gorgeous outfits
it also showcased art pieces by CSUF students in the Arts Inter-Club Council
Some pieces were placed on the walls and others were held up by easels for attendees to view
first-year mechanical engineering major and treasurer of the FFA
expressed how it was such a pleasure to see the art pieces being displayed at the fashion show
“I think it’s so cool that we're not only just involving the designers and everything
“Fashion is really a work of art and that just puts it together.”
Huerta also participated in the fashion show as a model and felt ecstatic and confident not only to have walked the runway
but also that everything played out exactly how they wanted it
and honestly just being on that stage gave me so much energy before and after,” Huerta said
FFA is planning to do more fashion shows in the future to continue showcasing the community’s fashion sense
FFA represents themselves as meant for everyone
regardless of having an interest in fashion or not
“We definitely want people to know that FFA stands for open community
no matter what type of style you have,” Gonzalez said
“We want to be known as a club that you can come to and feel very comfortable with being whatever you want to be (by) expressing yourself as you truly are.”
