Texas – A reported chemical incident at the docks of Targa Resources in Galena Park caused a bit of a scare near the Houston Ship Channel
The company, whose facility is located at 12510 American Petroleum Road, first reported the incident at 4 p.m. Thursday, according to a CAER Alert
In a post on the City of Galena Park’s Facebook page
the city confirmed the incident happened at the docks of the company on Buffalo Bayou
Targa Resources said activity around the facility may be noticeable to the community
but there are no off-site impacts at this time
the company Kirby Inland Marine confirmed the incident as a vapor release from a barge parked at the Targa Resources’ docking terminal
Kirby confirmed the barge is owned by them
and a valve failure resulted in the release of a vapor
They also explained the product on the barge is butadiene
a colorless gas commonly used for industrial purposes
Emergency response contractors were responding to the incident
and the Coast Guard temporarily closed off a section of the ship channel as a precaution
Kirby Inland Marine confirmed with KPRC 2’s Cathy Hernandez that the leak was contained late Tuesday night and the barge was towed to one of its facilities
The Houston Ship Channel is also back to normal operations
No air quality threats have been detected at this time
and Port Houston has not reported any injuries
It’s also unclear if there would be an investigation conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

KATY — The scouting report showed that Galena Park North Shore was bigger
stronger and faster than the Westlake football team
Chaps quarterback Rees Wise led an opportunistic offense and Westlake's defense came up with big stop after big stop to stun North Shore 35-10 in a Class 6A Division I state semifinal Saturday afternoon at Legacy Stadium
Westlake (14-1) advances to the state championship game and will face North Crowley at 7 p.m
North Shore (14-1) was a victim of poor execution
questionable coaching decisions and overlooking a Westlake team that remains one of the blue bloods of high school football in Texas
This was a revenge game for the Chaparrals
who had lost to the Mustangs in the state semis the past two years
all we heard was North Shore this and North Shore that," said Chaps head coach Tony Salazar
who's making his first appearance in the state title game as a head coach
"They said Westlake shouldn't be here; we're not like the other three teams playing today
They're right: We weren't like the rest of them."
There were so many turning points that led to the team's unexpected blowout victory
Perhaps the biggest play was North Shore's inability to make a fourth-and-2 at its own 20-yard line early in the third quarter
Westlake responded a play later when Wise connected with Grady Bartlett on a 19-yard touchdown pass to give the Chaps a 28-10 lead
"Our offense made (the defensive stand count) hurt," Salazar said
Westlake shocked North Shore — and probably everyone who watches high school football in Texas — by scoring touchdowns on three straight possessions in the first half to take a 21-3 lead
Wise had one of his best halves of the season
passing for 123 yards and two touchdowns before intermission
He had scoring passes of 37 yards to Chase Bowen and 22 yards to Cash Robin
Robin's catch came early in the second quarter and was his first touchdown as a high school player
so was Westlake backup running back Elijah Clark
When the senior scored on a 51-yard romp late in the first quarter
it was just his third touchdown of the season
15 seconds left in the first half when cornerback Nigel Prince intercepted a Wise pass near midfield
The Mustangs took advantage of the rare Westlake miscue and scored on a 9-yard catch by Quanell Farrakhan with 11 seconds left to cut the Chaparrals' lead to 21-10 at the break
led by linebacker Elliott Schaper (12 tackles
and defensive backs George Jones and Payton Luther
The Chaps combined for 10 tackles for loss
The play of the day set up Westlake's victorySalazar and Vasek agreed that Westlake's defensive stand to start the second half was the game's pivotal moment
wasted no time by hitting Bartlett with a soft touchdown throw
Westlake stopped North Shore on another fourth-down play on the Mustangs' next possession
"Do that is how you win big games," said Schaper
But what about the scouting report that said North Shore had the edge in every category
A handful of Mustangs had their heads hung low after Westlake took the 28-10 lead
If the game was supposed to be a North Shore romp
"We weren't going to lose to them for the third time in a row," Wise said
gets another chance to win the state's biggest sporting event
including his early touchdown run that sparked a 21-point surge
Luther picked off his fourth interception as a Chaparral
Westlake players and coaches gathered for the traditional trophy ceremony
Fans were chanting; cheerleaders were screaming and taking photographs
hoisting his first state semifinal trophy in his three years as head coach
Westlake plays (North Shore) better than anybody else," Salazar said
but we play them better than everybody else
I didn't expect anything different from the way our offense and defense played today."
This week's state championship gamesWednesday-Saturday
Wednesday — Class A Six-man Division II: Jayton vs
11 a.m.; Class 6A DII: Southlake Carroll vs
Galena Park North Shore (13-0) vs Humble Atascocita (12-1)
Saturday at Houston’s Thorne Stadium:
North Shore’s won the last nine meetings in this series
including a 27-23 thriller during Week 9 in which Atascocita dominated for 47 of the 48 minutes
Can the Eagles put that heartbreak behind them and finally get over the hump in front of what is expected to be a standing room only crowd at newly remodeled Thorne Stadium
Last week North Shore raced out to a 21-0 lead on Katy, but then a couple of turnovers later, the Mustangs found themselves in a fight. NSHS finally pulled away down the stretch for a 42-28 win. QB Kaleb Bailey threw for 281 yards and five touchdowns, spreading the ball around to five different receivers. Ohio State DB commit Devin Sanchez made his presence known with an interception
a fumble recovery and a long kick return as well for the Mustangs
Atascocita got tested last week but the Eagles survived against unbeaten Fulshear, 47-42. Oklahoma RB commit Tory Blaylock ran for 155 yards and five scores and the Atascocita defense found a way late to slow down a very difficult offensive scheme
The key in this game will be Atascocita’s defense. The Eagles found a way to contain the North Shore offense in the first game. If they can do it again
North Shore’s penchant for turnovers is a major concern going into this one
Eventually all streaks must end and this may be the time
Stepp’s Pick: Humble Atascocita by 3

Texas – It’s getting easier for students at Galena Park ISD to get access to quality healthcare through the district’s partnership with Legacy Community Health
Legacy has four health clinics in Galena Park ISD
SEE ALSO: ‘Many parents don’t know:’ More children, teens in Houston developing liver disease
That’s where Legacy Community Health stepped in and has been vital to students’ health and well-being like 12-year-old Donovan
a 7th grader at Galena Park ISD’s Cunningham Middle School
“He wouldn’t want to make eye contact with anyone‚” said Michelle Fout
“He would just keep to himself and I can tell by his body language that he was uncomfortable
‘How would you feel about speaking to a therapist’ and he was open to it.”
GPISD is the only public school district with this kind of convenient
“It’s pretty underserved with regard to students and families gaining access to high-quality health care,” said Stephanie Ramirez
Vice President of Operations with Legacy Community Health

“We can’t even begin to tell you how amazing this partnership is in sustaining our students’ health and their care and also being able to keep them in the classroom
which definitely helps us to support curriculum and instruction for our students

Katy (11-1) vs Galena Park North Shore (12-0)
Two of Houston’s most well-known programs meet up on Black Friday once again in Houston’s premier venue with a raucous crowd ready to explode
The two teams met six times between 2016 and 2019 with North Shore taking four of the six meetings
but they haven’t played since 2019 when North Shore took down the Tigers in the playoffs
Katy got an early scare last week from Cy Falls
but the Tigers pulled away down the stretch for a 49-20 win
Katy’s potent ground game was hitting on all cylinders with Tremayne Hill racking up 191 yards and two scores. Aqualis Jordan rushed for 93 yards and a score while Joshua Smith added 55 yards and two scores
North Shore raced out to a 30-0 lead on Fort Bend Ridge Point last week and held the Panthers off for a 44-27 victory. RB D’Andre Hardeman Jr. ran for 144 yards and two scores
while ATH Chris Thomas had 93 yards rushing and a score
QB Kaleb Bailey tossed three touchdowns as well to pace NSHS
will need to be on their game in run support this week as Katy will look to control pace and not get into a tack meet
The question is can the Tigers defense control that explosive North Shore attack with weapons galore

Texas – Galena Park ISD has announced that all but four schools will have a normal day on Wednesday
The district had been closed ever since last Thursday’s destructive storms
The campuses which will not have school tomorrow are as follows:
These four campuses have not yet had power restored
Students and staff at open campuses should plan to report at their normal times
Buses will resume their normal routes and schedules
Residents of communities along the Houston Ship Channel came together on a Saturday in August at the Galena Park Library to share their stories about air pollution and seek solutions on how to better protect themselves from industry emissions at a community event hosted by The Texas Tribune
A resident recounted the pervasive stench of rotten eggs and onions that haunted her neighborhood
while a local bakery owner asked environmental experts about the best ways to prepare for a potential chemical incident
listened intently as she learned how to file an air quality complaint with the state environmental agency
For the people living in communities that sit in the shadow of one of the world’s largest petrochemical complexes
strange smells and polluted air are as much a part of daily life as traffic jams are to the rest of the city
part of The Texas Tribune’s community engagement efforts
was inspired by my previous reporting on environmental health impacts in those communities
My colleagues and I saw an opportunity to fill important information gaps by returning to the community
and hosting a community-focused event — something that's not always possible in journalism
From disastrous chemical fires to the routine chemical releases from industrial plants
the residents near the Ship Channel constantly face environmental hazards
Last year, a joint investigation by the Tribune and Public Health Watch into a 2019 chemical fire in Deer Park found that benzene emissions reached dangerous levels weeks after the fire was extinguished
and officials at times didn’t immediately alert residents about the invisible danger
Our most recent investigation
in collaboration with Altavoz Lab and Environmental Health News
found that air-quality data from the state is often inadequate
crucial information on how to avoid chemical exposure and the public health consequences of such incidents doesn’t always reach those who need it most
The event at the Galena Park Library aimed to give residents more accessible information and a space to ask questions offering residents practical knowledge and resources at three interactive stations:
* Monitoring air quality: Advocacy groups taught residents how to track the pollutants in the air they breathe using community air monitoring systems
* Protecting yourself: Environmental experts provided guidance on what to do during a chemical event
including how to recognize symptoms of chemical exposure
* Making your voice heard: Residents learned how to file complaints with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and make public comments on proposed petrochemical facility permits
with Spanish-language interpreters on hand
The dozens of people who attended asked thoughtful questions and expressed gratitude that The Texas Tribune had taken the time to return and listen to their concerns
“It’s because of events like these that we are able to educate people about these issues," said Rodney Reed
an assistant chief of operational support for the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office
“Thank you for informing us about what to do during a chemical emergency,” said a woman who attends St
Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church in Channelview
we also wanted to find a way to bring our work directly to people in Cloverleaf
a predominantly Latino community where more than 71% of Cloverleaf residents speak Spanish at home and are not regular readers of The Texas Tribune
How do you reach a community that relies on Facebook groups
freelance reporter Wendy Selene Pérez and I went back to Cloverleaf for four days
distributing flyers with critical information on chemical emergency preparedness and civic engagement
The flyers also had a QR code that took people to our website so they could read and listen to our stories in English or Spanish
and handed flyers to parents waiting in line to pick up their children from school
The owner of a quinceañera dress shop shared how she used to speak out at public meetings about the “fumes and chemicals” but had since felt ignored and stopped speaking out
encouraged his customers to pick up the flyers
“It’s so great that you are doing this and taking notes and testimonials,” he said
a resident who said she has persistent allergies and skin irritation
people like y’all are taking time out of your hands trying to figure this out for other people.”
we at the Tribune and our reporting partners also facilitated connections between residents and local environmental organizations like Air Alliance Houston
a nonprofit that operates its own air monitoring network in Galena Park
three families living in Cloverleaf asked to have community air monitors set up outside their homes — a direct result of the Tribune's efforts
a community air monitoring program manager for Air Alliance Houston
the engagement strategy wasn’t just about distributing information — it was about building trust
By returning to the neighborhoods along the Houston Ship Channel
this collaboration showed that journalism doesn’t have to end when the story is published; it can continue as a conversation with the people it serves
This project was created through the Altavoz Lab Environmental Fellowship in partnership with Environmental Health Sciences and received additional funding from the Pulitzer Center. It was co-published by The Texas Tribune, Environmental Health News and palabra

Fort Bend Ridge Point (10-1) vs Galena Park North Shore (11-0)
All eyes in Houston will be on this showdown in Pearland as Ridge Point
is one of the few teams in the Houston area that’s capable of matching North Shore from a pure talent standpoint
Last week the Panthers cruised to a 49-16 win over Pasadena Dobie. Houston QB commit Austin Carlisle had a big night through the air and on the ground to lead the charge as he threw three touchdown passes
including one to TCU WR commit Dane Jones; Carlisle added two scores on the ground as well
Ridge Point has one of the best secondary units in the state and they’ll be tested this week by North Shore’s explosive cast of receivers
North Shore rolled to a 56-13 win over Deer Park last week. The Mustangs only held a 21-13 lead late second quarter, but then scored 35 straight led by junior QB Kaleb Maryland, who tossed a pair of touchdown passes. RB DeAndre Hardeman ran for two scores and RB Chris Thomas added a touchdown pass from Kaleb Bailey and a touchdown run
North Shore’s defense continues to play lights out and that group is the key in this one. They’ll slow down Carlisle and Ridge Point enough to let the offense roll
