ONTARIO - This senior class at Galion has accomplished a lot over four years But the one thing that always eluded them was a win over MOAC rival Ontario Wednesday night on the Warriors' home turf Galion's offense exploded for 13 runs as the Tigers beat Ontario 13-2 for the first time since April 26 And it was the program's first win at Ontario in more than a decade "Kind of a monkey off our back with Ontario we haven't beaten them in a long time," Galion coach Kenny Fagan said "We knew we were gonna probably be in for a fight they were prepared to go before we got on the bus Senior Max Albert pitched a gem for the Tigers allowing four hits and two runs while striking out nine in four innings but I found it today pounding on the zone." going 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs "We all stuck to our approach," Albert said It was the epitome of team baseball as all nine starters contributed with either runs scored and RBIs while classmate Braxton Prosser added two runs and an RBI despite going 0-for-5 at the plate "Those three seniors that start every day for us are program leaders in most categories," Fagan said It's awesome to see all three of them start to click at the same time." and junior Trey Longwell had a pair of hits to go with his closing effort on the mound throwing the final three innings and striking out a pair "All season we've just been preaching team at-bats," Fagan said "The only thing that matters in our dugout is winning the game It doesn't matter who does it for us — and we hope it's a different guy every night — because that means you know The Tigers won their sixth game of the season and remain in the hunt for the MOAC title tied at the top with Highland with a loss apiece There's still a lot of baseball to be played and Fagan hopes his team can continue to grow and get better with each game he leans on his seniors at times to guide the underclassmen "We start two sophomores and two freshmen and bringing those guys along .. the guys behind you are going to be great." zholden@gannett.com | 419-617-6018 | Twitter/X: @Zachary_Holden Image: dan / FreeDigitalPhotos.net Galion's school buildings are starting to show their age That's why the district is asking voters this autumn to approve a new property tax that will fund an extensive maintenance schedule a member of the levy committee for Galion City Schools The new levy would come at a rate of 5 mills for every $1 of taxable land value which would cost property owners $175 for each $100,000 of the county auditor's appraised value of a property The county auditor estimates the tax would collect $1,025,000 the new levy would start in 2024 and would first be collected in 2025 meaning it would exist until either repealed or replaced by voters Galion property owners presently pay two other school taxes: one for to pay off the new school building and another to fund the district's expenses Voters passed the city's construction levy of 6.84 mills in 2003 That levy was for 28 years and was designed to raise $20 million there just simply wasn't a lot of maintenance," Watkins said so we do have maintenance on the buildings." The other levy on the books is a 7.73-mill levy that voters most recently renewed in 2020 for five years "There was no new money there," Watkins said "It was basically just allowing the schools to keep their money." A fact sheet on the district's website states that more than 90% of the school districts in Ohio have a permanent improvement levy on the books or the school district's day-to-day operations Permanent improvement moneys are designed for items with life spans greater than five years The maintenance list keeps growing for Galion City Schools 11 are reaching the end of their lifespans "It's gone beyond maintenance," Watkins said there's the leak in the middle school roof that gets a little bigger each day "It's around an $80,000 fix," Watkins said "In my mind the worst case scenario is if this doesn't get fixed then the other roofs that are the same age begin to start leaking stuff "We were very fortunate with the new buildings There wasn't a lot of maintenance," Watkins said the maintenance is starting to come to fruition I think that this levy was designed to try to purposely not go after any more money than what’s needed." GALION - Which was more impressive in Week 6: Ontario's Bodpegn Miller or the Warriors defense Miller unofficially had 344 yards of total offense and five touchdowns as the Warriors remained undefeated with a convincing 49-0 win at Galion the defense held a Galion team averaging 30.4 points and 279.6 yards to a mere 89 yards of offense and a goose egg on the scoreboard "He's just special," Ontario coach Aaron Eckert said of Miller "And I don't know in my lifetime if I'll ever get to coach a kid like that (again) giving credit where credit was due Friday night "Defense has been great here all year," Miller said "We have a great coaching staff and a great game plan every week We've got a great D-line and the DBs showed up today." It was the type of game the Warriors had been waiting for all season long Golf: Crestview nabs first sectional title on the links since 2014 "We haven't brought it together and played four quarters of football," Miller said The rain throughout the first half certainly played a factor into the game Galion struggled moving the ball at times slipping on the wet grass and mud while the Warriors somehow seemed to glide over the ground and get their footing just right as to not end up on the ground "I don't know why we struggled so much with the wet ground they seemed to be better at that tonight," Galion coach Matt Dick said "And Bodpegn Miller is a really special athlete … when they get into those third downs and we think we got a shot He had several notable plays in the game including a perfectly lofted ball into the corner of the end zone for Jon Mahon and even made key tackles on defense including the first one of the game "Both of them might be 14 or 21 points better than us … but not what we showed," Dick said And I think the kids feel the same way as me "When you get beat like we've gotten beat the last two weeks That's a challenge as coaches and my coordinators … what do you really believe is the future of Galion football "We have some other seniors and juniors that want to win right now But when it when it gets like it's gotten the last two weeks we gotta say — what do we want to hang our hat on and then build from that?" And Eckert knows his Warriors were able to capitalize on the conditions and big plays early to take control of momentum in the game "Tonight the ball just bounced our way a little bit "We were just fortunate to be a little bit better than them." GALION - Matt Dick will be left wondering — what if What if his Galion Tigers didn't have four false start penalties in the first half What if holding penalties didn't thwart a first down What if they cleaned up their penalties just a bit I really wish that we could've gone three-and-out without a holding penalty or a false start — we talked about that at halftime — it just never clicked." For the second time in as many meetings Ottawa-Glandorf came to Galion and ended the Tigers' season This time it was a narrow 13-7 final which means the No 2 Shelby in the Division IV Region 18 quarterfinal next week "Defense played outstanding throughout the evening," O-G coach Ken Schriner said "It was a battle of some crazy turnovers in the game we're just happy to get out of here with the win It came down to the wire with the last second The Titans capitalized on Galion mistakes in the first half eventually leading to the opening touchdown when quarterback Peyton Kuhlman rushed in from 11 yards on the first play of the second quarter They'd double that early in the fourth as Kuhlman connected with a wide open Dan Duling from 13 yards out Galion would respond with an Ayden Schmit one-yard blast up the middle to pull within a score and got the ball back one last time but couldn't drive down for the tying — or go head — score and I think some of that just comes from new guys stepping up and mixing a lot of guys in," Dick said and if you have a chance with the ball in the fourth quarter to win it After being stymied most of the first half Galion moved the ball much better in the second by incorporating QB keepers for Schmidt and utilizing über athletes Braxton Prosser and Jacob Chambers It was a necessary change as the Titans clogged up the middle of the field "It's that the speed factor and that's what they do well They were able to get to the edge a little bit more and we had to make sure we got our contain guys out there a little bit quicker We thought we had a size advantage and hopefully we could take advantage of that." Galion's loss brings an end to the careers of a small group of special upperclassmen you really shouldn't be set up for a good year at the end of the year we thought we probably could have won more to say we're 7-4 is one a heck of an accomplishment and Luke Garverick all had different paths Braxton Prosser's a four-year quarterback who started his first game at Clyde in the playoffs as a freshman Allen Carver was a big part of our defense last year and this year was a big part of our offense Michael Drake's been our center for two years and Luke Garverick is one of those guys that worked his way all the way up to varsity It took him three years to finally get his first start in Week 1 and he started every game." But the cupboard certainly isn't bare in Galion "It's nice we have a big junior class back that definitely helps for next year," Dick said we try to put it together and try our best to get to our capacity every single year A 23-year-old man pleaded guilty last week to sexually contacting two children according to Crawford County Prosecutor Matt Crall Cobb was sentenced to four years in prison by Common Pleas Judge Sean Leuthold The man was arrested in February after the two victims came forward The prosecutor said his office had been pursuing more serious charges "That was kind of a compromise to get the case completed without forcing our young victims to endure a trial," Crall said They would like to see this put in their rearview mirror." Cobb is scheduled to be released in late February 2028 He is the third man in his family to go to prison on sex-related charges a former Buckeye Central School District bus driver pleaded guilty to three counts of pandering sexually oriented materials involving a juvenile in July 2023 was convicted of two counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor in December "The youngest Cobb will have to register as a sex offender for 10 years," Crall said 2025Dylan HefflingerPrep Baseball Ohio Editor in Chief/Advanced Scout Follow on Twitter- @PrepBaseballOHFollow on Twitter- @PrepBaseOHScoutFollow on Instagram- @prepbaseballohio Prep Baseball Ohio is eagerly anticipating bringing the Buckeye state the best high school coverage that can be found anywhere in 2025 we began releasing team previews for squads across the state we will have Preseason All-State Teams as well as the Preseason State Rankings coming your way To view the full list of 2025 Team Previews that we have already completed, please click here If you are a coach and haven't filled out your 2025 Team Preview, click here Interested in attending a Prep Baseball Ohio event? Schmidt started under center and completed three passes one of which a 33-yard strike to Jacob Chambers to open the scoring Prosser came back in after the Tigers recovered a fumble on the kickoff and doubled the score on a 10-yard rush Wynford would respond with a Brayden Campbell to Anthony Evans wheel route for 33 yards But that's the closest it would get as Prosser hit Chambers for a 24-yard touchdown before hitting Chambers again with a 25-yard strike Galion led 34-7 with Chambers having eight receptions for 121 yards and three touchdowns "We have a lot of explosive kids," Dick said Braxton Prosser … and then we have three or four running backs Coaches did a good job keeping everybody fresh There's a lot of new faces that can make a lot of plays there's still a couple freshmen I think could probably mix in and make some plays as well "We're blessed to have a lot of guys that once they touch the ball I bet about 50% of the time he's gonna score touchdown we're just gonna spread the ball around a little bit more keep guys fresh with how we're subbing — I think it's going to pay dividends." there were questions that needed answered entering the season how would the Tigers handle losing so much size up front especially with this young of a team," Chambers said but everyone's really stepping up and playing and a 4-yard run by Wynford's Anthony Evans capped off the scoring on the night they do some really good things on offense," Wynford coach Cyle Skidmore said "They put their kids in the right position to be explosive and make big plays I thought they controlled the line of scrimmage up front and that's something our kids have to learn You can't show up and think you're going to control the line of scrimmage "We can get better from this and we can learn from it What was most impressive about Galion controlling the line was that is where the Tigers had the least amount of experience Football Preview | Lots to be excited about this season on the gridiron in Crawford County "A kid like Zach Sallee is probably 6-foot all those guys have played above our initial expectation through the first two scrimmages and one game zholden@gannett.com Twitter/X: @Zachary_Holden The Galion Community Theatre is gearing up for its 41st season in 2025 Members and community partners got a sneak peak during a celebration Nov The afternoon included reprises from the casts of "Singin’ in the Rain" and "The Addams Family" and a preview of the holiday production of "It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play."
