MISSOULA — The Missoula Farmers' Market returns this Saturday for the 53rd season
continuing a Missoula tradition that brings community members from across the area together to support small farmers and small businesses

fresh vegetables and fruit to the citizens of Missoula for so long
We've got some vendors that have been here or their family has been with the market for the whole 53 years
So to be able to support the farmers in that way is really special,” said Tami Hubbard

Coming hot off the heels of the farmers market, the Garden City Brewfest also returns this Saturday at Caras Park
“This is the 31st annual Garden City Brewfest
We like to consider it the kickoff to the official event season in Carrows Park,” said Kristen Sackett with the Downtown Missoula Partnership
She knows there's a reason why the Garden City Brewfest is Montana's largest

Sackett told MTN that the festival will also have 500 stein mugs for purchase
but people will want to arrive early if they want one
Sackett also encourages people to make responsible decisions
but we definitely encourage that,” said Sackett
The farmers' market opens to the public at 8 a.m

These attributes make up the tagline of Garden City’s newly rebranded destination marketing organization (DMO) Choose Garden City
(DMOs are non-profit organizations that help promote and market local attractions
restaurants and more.) Rebranding their DMO helps the city stand out from the crowd of other regional destinations' marketing
“We are excited to introduce Choose Garden City as the new face of our destination marketing efforts,” said Garden City Mayor Bruce Campbell
“Our new brand celebrates what makes Garden City such a special place to live
In late 2024, Garden City passed a memorandum of understanding with Visit Savannah to promote the city as a destination for tourists
The city previously contracted with another DMO
the Garden City Convention Center and Visitor’s Bureau
but after more than a year of no communication with its leadership they reached out to Visit Savannah
along with locally owned marketing agency RobMark
conducted venue visits and listening tours with hoteliers and city officials to hear from the community and business owners to develop the creative foundation for the new brand
Ianonne said they began working with RobMark in late 2024
and hit the ground running early this year
“Our ultimate goal is to drive more visitation to Garden City
and fill in more hotels and restaurants,” Ianonne said
its about reshaping perceptions and aligning the brand with current market trends
community values and traveler expectations.”
Ianonne said there was no desire to try and reinvent Garden City
the goal is to honor its authenticity while also recognizing its advantages because of its proximity to major attractions in surrounding cities
the Ghost Pirates Ice Cover and Anchor Park in Port Wentworth
It’s also home to the Georgia Ports Authority
and more than half of the city's land is devoted to industrial or commercial uses related to it
“We recognize who Garden City’s visitor is today,” Ianonne said
“They include people doing business at the ports
Families traveling for youth sporting events in and around Chatham County
and general leisure visitors preferring a more affordable hotel price point when visiting
to experience all that Savannah has to offer
Garden City embraces and welcomes them all.”
New brand rooted in valuesThe new brand is rooted in values that they heard consistently from city leadership and community members — pride in Garden City’s hometown feel
through conversations with business owners
“Garden City isn’t trying to be something its not—it’s proud of who it is
People here are welcoming and eager to offer visitors a comfortable
The branding seeks to reflect the balance of being so close to industrial and commercial opportunities
while still having the warmth and character of a smaller community
while the blue nods to the river that connects the city to the port and beyond
The next step is the development and launch of a new tourism website with a mid-summer launch date
the DMO will partner with digital and print media outlets
and billboard companies throughout the region

April 30 was a rare performance for Michigan commit Ethan Armstrong
not the 12 strikeouts the right-handed junior threw in six innings of work
ensuring the Garden City baseball team a 7-0 win at Melvindale's Szalka Field
But the fact that the win came in Western Wayne Athletic Conference play
The league isn't your typical blueblood conference
Kensington Lakes Activities Association or Oakland Activities Association
one school dominates in a particular sport
like Romulus in girls basketball or Redford Union in football
Armstrong's 95 mph fastball isn't needed unless it's a game vs
Most teams use those games to get their players more reps in the batter's box and experience for the back end of their bullpen
which gets to pitch Armstrong and simulate future playoff games
"It's big time for us," coach Avery Emerson said
"It just brings the playoff baseball atmosphere to our games
it brings playoff experience into the regular season."
They've already beaten Woodhaven, which is two years removed from finishing as the Division 1 state runner-up
while they have upcoming games with Livonia Stevenson
it'll play Birmingham Seaholm under the lights
Armstrong is expected to start in a few of those
no matter its conference prestige or enrollment
That's the impact a future Division I arm on the mound can have on your team
it's way better than anybody I've ever caught," noted sophomore Ethan VanBelle
which is saying something because the catcher helped Michigan win the Little League World Series in 2021 and has been around some stellar pitchers over the years
Armstrong never set out to be an elite arm
but he thought he'd be a better hitter and infielder than pitcher
It wasn't until he started traveling around the country
that he realized he had the stuff to pitch in the Big Ten
was the eye-opening experience he needed to change his approach to the sport
That's when he dedicated himself to getting bigger
the pitching started coming along," Armstrong said
and I just started becoming a better pitcher
These guys were bigger than me and stronger than me
Having someone with that pedigree in Garden City's dugout has inspired the Cougars to play their hardest every time they step onto the diamond
it shows them what the goal and intensity should be like every single day," Emerson said
Added VanBelle: "He's a leader who pushes the guys to get better every day
we can compete with anybody in the state."
that's the goal during the Cougars' upcoming slate of non-conference games
as they've almost wrapped up the league championship
they hope that rings true once the district tournament begins
Armstrong should give them a chance to upset a team or two

Public health officials reported nine new measles cases in Kansas in the past week after not recording any new cases the week before
State data indicate all nine new cases were in the same county
eight of those patients are children and at least eight of the patients were unvaccinated
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported April 30 that Kansas has had 46 total measles cases statewide
That's up from 37 cases as of t he April 23 and April 16 reports
There has been one hospitalization reported
Nationwide, there have been 884 total confirmed measles cases across 30 jurisdictions as of April 24, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Those cases have led to 94 hospitalizations and three deaths
Two of the deaths have been unvaccinated school-aged children in Texas
while the other was an unvaccinated adult in New Mexico
Kansas has had the third-most cases of any state behind Texas' 663 and New Mexico's 66, according to CDC data and Associated Press reporting
The measles cases have all been in southwest Kansas
Gray County — located between Dodge City and Garden City — has had the most cases at 15
an increase of nine from last week's KDHE data
Stevens County has had seven and Kiowa county has had six
Grant and Morton counties each have between one and five cases
but KDHE hasn't reported the exact number in order to protect patient privacy
Those statistics are unchanged from last week's data
More: 'Thanks, Texas': Kansas now has the third-most measles cases in the country
measles is primarily affecting unvaccinated children
14 are ages infant to 4 years old — which is when the second MMR vaccine dose is recommended — while 24 are in the 5-17 years old age range
That's an increase of one adult and eight children since last week
At least 39 of the patients haven't been vaccinated
Three patients have received age-appropriate vaccinations
while one patient was under-vaccinated for their age
Vaccination statuses for three patients couldn't be verified
More: Amid measles outbreak, governor promotes MMR vaccine: 'This is not political'
Public health officials recommend that two doses of the MMR vaccine for children
with the first dose administered at age 12-15 months and the second dose at age 4-6 years
Adults are generally recommended to get one dose
Two doses are recommended for adults working in health care or attending higher education
due to the higher risk of exposure and transmission
For counties that are part of the measles outbreak as well as the surrounding counties
KDHE is recommending an early dose of the MMR vaccine
that dose is recommended for infants ages 6-11 months
For children in those counties who are older than 12 months and have not been vaccinated
KDHE recommends "one dose immediately and follow with a second dose at least 28 days after." Children older than 12 months who have already gotten a first dose "should receive an early second dose."
KDHE is also advising teenagers and adults who have previously been vaccinated with one dose should receive a second dose

CRANSTON, R.I. (WJAR) — Garden City Center is starting to fill some of the vacant stores at their outdoor shopping area
They will also be adding a farmer's market
"We're very excited to have even more stores opening here at Garden City Center," said General Manager Joe Koechel
Work is underway to make room for Garden City Center's five newest businesses
Boston-based business Anna Taqueria will be stationed at the old Boston Market here next to Dunkin
Maclaughlin clothing will be inside the old Chico's store
Evereve women's clothing store is also on the list
Stephanie Mastroianni spent her Tuesday afternoon with family at Garden City Center
She said it has transformed over the years
"I feel like it's fantastic that it's really up-and-coming from the years that I grew up coming here
when I was their age," said Mastroianni
"I just remember just the Newport Creamery and very few stores and this is like a whole other world
There will also be a farmer's market starting next month
It will be run by Rhode Foody and RI Night Market
We'll have 30 to 40 different types of vendors,' said Koechel
"It's not only fruits and vegetables
we'll even have a little bit of a beer garden."
Garden City Center is 90% leased out with a few vacancies
"Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza had left
They had financial difficulties throughout their whole company
we'll be naming someone for that space
Obviously last fall we had the unfortunate fire at Applebee's and at Bistro
we'll be replacing those two restaurants with other restaurants in the future," said Koechel
"Then Party City as we all know closed throughout the country
We have a lot of interest in that space."
Koechel said it's important to have a good ratio of restaurants
to keep up with the state's growing and popular culinary scene
NBC 10 asked Koechel if the Applebee's and Bistro 22 will be demolished
"We're working with engineers and insurance companies as quickly as possible to make a determination on what needs to be done for that area," said Koechel
"But we are looking forward to bringing back two new restaurants into that area
It's a beautiful courtyard in that area and we love having all of those restaurants in that area for people to choose
Skin Spa New York is no longer coming to GCC
so that space and Anthony's will be consolidated into one space for a new restaurant
Mastroianni's children Evelyn and Marcello said they would like to see a clock or candy store
Mastroianni said an indoor entertainment for kids would also be a nice addition
The five new businesses are expected to open this Fall
Idaho (CBS2 News) — Bardenay has opened its fourth restaurant and distillery in Garden City
but it's not exactly the same as its downtown Boise
but it's a little fancier," said Kevin Settles
"We're always conscious of value."
Settles also shared that the Garden City location is the first to have a state liquor store right outside
offering unique items not available elsewhere
"We have customers that've been coming for 20 years who don't realize we actually make hard liquor from scratch there
or that you can buy our spirits through the state store," said Settles
"We've never been able to sell a customer a bottle until we opened that store
The newest Bardenay also has the largest distillery
which they hope to provide tours of in the future
which we can't do at the other locations," said Settles
"This is four times bigger than our largest other distillery
Bardenay's unique concept of blending a distillery with a restaurant stems back to an idea Settles says he had more than 25 years ago
nationwide concept is due to his work with the federal government
Bardenay's Garden City location offers a variety of spirits
The company also provides a unique flight program
allowing customers to sample different spirits and liqueurs
They'll even share their recipes with you! Click here to see how you can make some of Bardenay's most popular drinks.
Settles expressed excitement about the community's response
all the positive comments we've gotten from the other wineries and breweries," he said
"The excitement of having an additional facility in the community has been great."

Texas Brinkley was Garden City's leading scorer
The Patriots drew first blood and kept their foot on the gas pedal for the rest of the first quarter

Aaron Green's team expanded its lead in the third quarter
the Patriots finished off a 60-37 win in the state semifinals to secure a trip to the Alamodome
Valley's height and length proved to be the difference as Green's group forced the Bearkats into tough shots and racked up points around the rim all night
and that really kind of pulled their defense out a little bit to open it up even more
We've just been playing really good defense and getting the ball inside to our two big guys
Valley junior Kanyon Taylor: "We've been preparing for it all year
Valley freshman Corbin Taylor: "We knew we'd be here

GARDEN CITY, Mich. – Fire officials are investigating after a house explosion happened in Garden City on Thursday evening.
At about 6:50 p.m. on March 13, 2025, the fire department was notified of a house explosion in the 6500 block of Silvio Street, according to Garden City Fire Chief Randy Keen.
Crews discovered that the house was unoccupied at the time of the explosion.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation, according to Keen.
You can watch chopper video of the damage following the explosion in the video below:
It is not known what part of the house the explosion happened in, but the chief said that bricks were displaced from three sides of the house and some of the windows were displaced.
Crews also put out fires on the first floor of the home and in the basement.
“You can see the devastation to the house itself, you can see the sides of it don’t have any brick on it anymore, some of the windows were displaced, so obviously the explosion was pretty violent. Fortunately, no injuries to any of the homes or any of the people around it.”
The investigation is ongoing. There is no active threat to the area.

(KWCH) - The Clarion Inn in Garden City confirmed on Friday that one of its employees tested positive for measles
The hotel said the case was identified and handled over a week ago
The confirmation comes after the Kansas Department of Health and Environment informed the public of possible exposure at the hotel
The KDHE said it is working with local health departments to respond to the measles outbreak in southwest Kansas
Symptoms may include a fever and a new or unexplained skin rash
The KDHE said anyone who was at the hotel between April 8-10 should monitor themselves for 21 days
the employee who tested positive for measles had no direct contact with hotel guests while on shift and followed all appropriate quarantine and treatment guidelines after learning the diagnosis
Management at the Clarion Inn said no other staff have tested positive for measles
and necessary precautions have been taken to mitigate any public health risks
“Clarion Inn management questions why state health officials would publish a press release that publicly named the hotel long after the isolated incident
while not every other location that this individual
or any other individual that has tested positive for measles in Southwest Kansas
has visited,” reads a statement from the Clarion Inn
said that naming the hotel exceeded the state’s authority
“State health officials should have learned their lesson on overstepping bounds during Covid-19,” said Price
“Publicly identifying our business causes fear and uncertainty but does nothing to improve public health
If the intent for traceability was sincere
public health officials would publish all locations that infected individuals had been to
The hotel pointed to Senate Bill 29
a recently passed state law that removes local authority to ban public gatherings during a disease outbreak
The law also allows for civil action for those who believe their constitutional rights may have been violated
KDHE said measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can be easily spread through talking
The health agency said the best way to curb the spread of the disease is through vaccination
Clarion Inn Responds to Reports of Isolated Measles Case (full statement)
The Clarion Inn confirms that there has been one alleged
case of a positive measles test reported by an employee
which was identified and handled over a week ago
This employee did not have direct contact with hotel guests while on shift
Since learning of the positive test result
the employee followed all appropriate quarantine and treatment guidelines without further incident
The Clarion Inn management notes that even after the normal incubation period after contact
The hotel assures the public that they have taken precautions to mitigate any public health risks
Clarion Inn management questions why state health officials would publish a press release that publicly named the hotel long after the isolated incident
“State health officials should have learned their lesson on overstepping bounds during Covid-19,” said Jake Price
Understanding the collateral damage of heavy-handed public health mandates
the Kansas Legislature recently passed a bill that limits the authority to interfere with public businesses and individual choice
the new law removes authority from state and local health officials to ban public gatherings and makes them liable for civil action for limiting constitutional rights to health freedoms
but the State Legislature voted to overturn the veto
a positive test result does not always equate to a confirmed case
which is widely available at health departments
individuals who have previously been infected have natural immunity against the virus according to public health sources

Garden City players after winning a Nassau boys lacrosse game against host Syosset on Tuesday
Garden City boys lacrosse might be the best public-school program on Long Island when everything is clicking
But that wasn’t the case Tuesday at Syosset
After a slow start that left the Trojans trailing upon exiting the first quarter Garden City left Syosset with an 11-4 road win in Nassau Conference I
The Trojans ran away for their second win of the season by scoring five fourth-quarter goals
But despite 11 goals and an offensive explosion to end the game for Garden City
it was the defense that shined the brightest
After allowing three unanswered goals inside the first seven minutes the Trojans defense stepped up as senior goalie Jake Schlipf only had to save three shots for the rest of the game
“Obviously we didn’t come out the way we should’ve,” senior defenseman Luke LeSueur said
“Our coaches settled us down and locked us in,” sophomore defenseman Andrew Dengler added
Dengler earned the responsibility of guarding Syosset star attackman Brody Waxer and lived up to the task
“I knew (Waxer) was a great guy,” Dengler said
I think we prepared really well for them today.”
only allowing low-percentage shots that would’ve required pinpoint accuracy to even grace the top corners of the goal
Senior midfielders Blake Cascadden and Michael Berkery
But it would’ve meant little if the offense couldn’t finish
and that’s where sophomore Anthony Asaro made his presence felt early and often
The attackman scored four goals and assisted two more
with four of his points coming in the second half
“Thankfully my guys were able to get me the ball.”
Asaro and freshman attackman Ben Smith look like they'll be causing havoc all season
with Smith delivering a pair of assists to Asaro from behind the goal before the attackman returned the favor by assisting Smith’s pair of goals
a strong program that featured a terrific day by standout senior defenseman Will Cawley (three caused turnovers
shows Garden City is ready to compete with the best of the best
That includes an upcoming non-league game on Tuesday against Rye
It’s the same program that narrowly fell 9-8 to eventual state Class C champion Bayport-Blue Point in last year’s state semifinal
I play club with some of them,” LeSueur said

Kathyrn Monaco of Garden City winds up her shot at the net during a Nassau girls lacrosse game against Wantagh on Tuesday
It took less than 12 seconds for Garden City to completely flip the direction of the contest
The Garden City girls lacrosse team allowed five of the game’s first six goals and appeared destined to end the first quarter with a sizable disadvantage
But the Trojans showcased how dynamic and fast they can be with Kimberly Colucci scoring with 11.7 seconds left before Kathryn Monaco won the ensuing draw control
ran behind the cage and wrapped around for a goal at the buzzer of the opening period to cut a four-goal deficit to a two-goal disadvantage
Those two scores started a run of six straight goals for the Trojans to fuel host Garden City to a 10-6 victory over Wantagh in Nassau Conference I girls lacrosse on Tuesday
“I knew we couldn’t get down on ourselves,” Monaco said
“We had to keep picking ourselves up and stay positive and know that we’re a good team and can come back
Kim scored the second goal and then we scored again before the quarter and there’s a big difference between 5-2 and 5-3
Colucci led Garden City with three goals and an assist with all four points coming during the Trojans’ 6-0 run
She scored the final two goals of the run to give Garden City a 7-5 lead entering halftime
“My teammates were just giving me the opportunities to get out there and go,” Colucci said
“We knew their defense and their personnel
4-3) went on a 5-0 scoring run over 7:17 in the first quarter after Tori Ottomanelli scored the opening goal for Garden City
“They came out and punched us in the face and credit to them,” coach Dave Ettinger said
“They are a good team with a lot of good players and they really took it to us early there and I’m just happy with how our girls adjusted and found a way.”
6-0) allowed just one goal in the final three quarters
“We were able to pick each other up and no one really started getting down on anyone
“We all knew we had to change something and that’s what we did.”
The Trojans had eight different goal scorers
Riley Forthofer had two goals and three assists to lead Wantagh and Juliana Cerasi and Sabrina Asadurian added two goals each
Tuesday was a battle of defending county champions with Garden City winning Nassau Class B and Wantagh taking Class C last year

Early in the year we didn’t really have an identity

GARDEN CITY— A long-time putt-putt golf course in the city is up for sale
is on the market along with an adjacent residential property at 29016 Ford Road as part of a package deal
“We have several people interested,” Re/Max associate broker Ali Abdallah said
but because it is in the business district of the city
No car washes or gas stations would be permitted
The 29016 address has a 2,200-square foot home which is currently occupied by the owner
but which Abdallah believes was previously used for commercial purposes as it has a 3-inch water main
He expects that a buyer would likely demolish that building as well as an outbuilding to develop the properties for mixed use of commercial and residential—perhaps “a beautiful plaza” with restaurants and retail shops
The properties have a total of 265 feet of frontage on Ford Road and also border Central Avenue and Krauter Street
Abdallah suggests up to a dozen two-story townhomes with attached garages could be built in the rear of the property
as well as up to 20 stores in a strip mall in the front.“This will be the future (of Garden City),” he said
“The community is moving in that direction.”
Abdallah adds that he envisions the area with lots of restaurants and coffee shops “similar to Royal Oak or Northville
The Bicknells could not be immediately reached for comment
"Throughout the years we have heard customers' childhood memories of our mini golf
and we are so thrilled that we can watch these families create more memories with their own children
These stories are what keep us going and keep us striving to remain a community staple."

A man faces eight felony counts including intent to murder after authorities said he set fire to a Garden City massage spa with two women inside
Garden City police responded to the business
The business is located in a strip mall directly across from Garden City High School
When crews arrived, the inside of the building was already engulfed in smoke and flames, police said in a press release
A female who was suffering from burns and smoke inhalation stumbled out of the building
She told authorities that one more person was still inside the burning building
Firefighters found and rescued the other person
Both victims were transported to an area hospital
Garden City police did not respond Friday evening to a phone message seeking more details
including an update regarding the alleged victims' conditions
Investigators found that multiple areas within the building appeared to have been intentionally set on fire
Garden City Police Department detectives identified 34-year-old Ali Al-Shimary as the suspected arsonist and arrested him Tuesday at his home
According to a WJBK (Fox2) report
one of the victims told police that Al-Shimary came to the spa intoxicated
he allegedly made an "unreasonable request," which was denied by the staff
broke items in the business and locked the victims in a laundry room before taking $50 and lighting the spa on fire
A call placed to Accura Care by The Detroit News on Friday evening was not answered and the voicemail box was full
Al-Shimary was charged with two counts each of first-degree arson
unlawful imprisonment and assault to do great bodily harm
The arson and attempted murder charges are punishable by up to life in prison
Unlawful imprisonment carries a 15-year maximum sentence while assault to do great bodily harm is punishable by up to 10 years behind bars
Al-Shimary was arraigned Thursday in Garden City's 21st District Court where Judge Richard L
he has not posted bond and remained at the Wayne County Adult Detention Facility as of Friday afternoon
who is listed online as Al-Shimary's attorney
did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment
Al-Shimary's next hearing is slated for 8:45 a.m
