Purchasing a home is one of the most important investments there is. More than a place to live, homeownership is an asset with the potential to tremendously rise in value. But with home prices reaching record heights, affordability plays a huge role for buyers
The typical home value in the United States was $359,741 in March
High mortgage rates are also making monthly payments more expensive; as of April 17, the 30-year fixed mortgage rate sits at 6.83%
Although home prices have inflated all across the U.S.
there are some cities that command a higher price tag than others
and condition are all contributing factors to home value
Stacker compiled a list of cities with the most expensive homes in Oregon using data from Zillow. Cities are ranked by the Zillow Home Values Index for all homes as of March 2025. The charts in this story were created automatically using Matplotlib

Craven County — The trial of Sharon Whitford continued for the eighth day on Wednesday and prosecutors have finished presenting their case to the jury
Their last witness was former Craven County Lieutenant Daniel Garden
Both Garden and Whitford admit to having an affair from September 2017 to December 30
2017 – the day prosecutors say Sharon Whitford murdered her husband Jimmy
explicit and intimate text messages between him and Sharon Whitford were referenced to prove the two were intimate
Garden says the two had sex five times in a two-month period
Garden says he received a voicemail from Jimmy Whitford the night of his death saying he knew Garden was having an affair with his wife
Garden claims he thought Sharon Whitford was separated from her husband during their affair
The defense is expected to claim Whitford killed her husband in self-defense
They brought up medical personnel who say they all saw Whitford on separate occasions after the death of her husband
Two nurses who specialize in neurology that saw Whitford testified that she had chronic headaches
An ophthalmologist also said that she performed surgery on one of Whitford’s eyes to remove “foreign metallic bodies.” She testified that they were more than likely pellets from a shotgun

I thought it would be fun to crunch some Census numbers to get a sense of where people of Chinese heritage live in the Northwest
I’ve rank-ordered places in the Northwest according to their share of people who self-identify as Chinese
have a far greater share of people of Chinese descent than any other place in the Northwest
the historical Chinese population centers in Portland and Seattle have given way to newer Chinese settlements in the suburbs
(CDP means “Census Designated Place,” which often refers to unincorporated places.)
a remarkably large share of Washington’s population is Chinese
Only five other states claim a larger percentage (Hawaii
despite the city of Seattle’s rich historical legacy
Chinese populations are far more prevalent in Seattle’s eastside suburbs around Bellevue
the real story of Chinese settlement today seems to center on Bellevue
which boasts nearly half as many people of Chinese descent as Seattle
you probably won’t recognize all those place names unless you’re a geography whiz
So here’s a quick run-down for some of the less familiar ones: Carlsborg is just west of Sequim on the Olympic Peninsula; Larch Way is sort of east of Lynnwood; Klahanie is basically on the Sammamish Plateau; Fairwood and Maple Heights-Lake Desire are both southeast of Renton; and Clear Lake is east of Burlington in Skagit County
Oregon has substantially fewer people of Chinese lineage
but with some intriguing geographic diversity
the old center city’s historical legacy of Chinese settlement has given way to suburban patterns
By far the dominant area in Oregon is Portland’s western suburbs along Highway 26 near Hillsboro and Beaverton
King City and Bull Mountain are southwest of Tigard
you’ll find both Waldport and Lincoln Beach on the Oregon Coast
while Elgin is located in remote northeast Oregon
Idaho has very few people of Chinese descent:
I’ll let readers Google the place names if they’re so inclined
Idaho once had relatively large Chinese settlements
but these have largely faded from the state
here’s a look at British Columbia with a note of caution: figures for BC are not to be compared to figures for the states
The numbers refer to somewhat different categories and come from different data sources
(More detail about that in my “notes and methods” section below.) Also
keep in mind that this picture of BC shows metropolitan areas
so we’re looking at much larger clusters of people
despite the fact that I said not to compare the figures for BC to the states
It’s clear that British Columbia is far more influenced by Chinese settlement than any other place in the Northwest
the state with the highest share of Chinese residents
Yet outside the Vancouver and Victoria metropolitan areas
the rest of British Columbia looks surprisingly like Idaho
and Washington with most places hosting only a small share of people claiming Chinese heritage
Now get out there and enjoy ushering in the Year of the Dragon
I used data from the US Census Bureau’s 2006-2010 American Community Survey 5-year estimates
Data refer to residents who self-identify as “Asian alone” and list “Chinese” as their ethnicity
these data omit people of two or more races who identify as Chinese.) My figures refer to people who identify as either Chinese or Taiwanese
but one that ultimately affects the numbers very little because there are very few people of Tawainese descent in the Northwest states
my tables exclude places with total populations less than 1,000
I used StatCan’s data from the 2006 Canadian Census
All data come from “Population Groups (28) and Sex (3) for the Population of Canada
Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations
2006 Census – 20% Sample Data.” To increase the comparability to the US numbers
I counted only those who identified as a single race
Including those who say they are “white and Chinese” would notch up many of the numbers by a couple of tenths of a percentage point
Data in BC are for Census-defined metropolitan areas and census agglomerations
Census data in Canada is awfully thin (and sometimes expensive) gruel compared to what’s readily available in the United States for free
using the US Census Bureau’s new American FactFinder interface is something akin to wandering in a funhouse

A new townhome development is set to rise across the street from one of Vancouver’s beloved natural showcases
The Whitford is a 68-unit townhouse development on the edge of VanDusen Botanical Gardens at Oak and 37th in the Shaughnessy neighbourhood of south Vancouver
VanDusen Gardens is a 55-acre collection of more than 7,500 plant species and is a leading attraction for the city of Vancouver
The townhouse project is named after Whitford Julien VanDusen
who was an early 20th century lumber magnate
Grosvenor senior vice-president of development for Vancouver Marc Josephson said the project tried to reflect the esthetics and natural aspects of the surrounding area
while still participating in the City of Vancouver’s ambitious densification of the Cambie corridor
“Shaughnessy historically is larger single-family homes and beautiful manicured neighbourhoods
This particular site was designated as a townhouse site as part of the Cambie corridor phase three planning process,” he said
“It was in a sense pre-contemplated as townhouses
so the process of moving through approvals
was not overly controversial at all and I would say very much welcomed into the negihbourhood.”
The new project replaces seven family duplex lots with 68 townhomes “which of course is an improvement to affordability and provides housing for many people in a desirable neighbourhood that in many cases is difficult to enter,” Josephson said
designed in collaboration with Formwerks Architecture and Ste
draw from both Scandinavian design principles and the brick faces and peaked roofs prevalent in Shaughnessy
“We wanted to emphasize the landscaping so it was somewhat reflective of our proximity to VanDusen Gardens to the extent that we could while still providing ample space for walkways
patios and all the various setback requirements of the city,” he said
“We wanted to strike a really nice balance between some of the more traditional elements you might find in a very long and storied neighbourhhod as well as ensuring they are also contemporary and appeal to all the things modern purchasers and homeowners want in a home.”
are very well connected to the surrounding area
including the currently under construction Oakridge Park planned-community project at the site of the former Oakridge mall
“It’s walking distance to Oakridge Park and all the many stores that are coming
which is very exciting as well as the new Jewish Community Centre (a $427 million project set for completion in late 2024)
very close to a number of parks and Kerrisdale and South Granville are a short drive away,” he said
He also compared the townhouse project to Grosvenor’s own Mayfair West development
a 14-acre planned community between Shaughnessy and Kerrisdale situated at the former Oakridge Transit Centre
“We are excited about this project because we can bring the same quality and focus on design to these ground-oriented homes that you’d find in our larger
master-planned communities,” Josephson said in a Grosvenor release
Construction will begin in a number of weeks
“and we anticipate completing construction of the whole development by late 2026 or early 2027,” he said
Will these homes be accessible or are you not wanting the disabled community to participate

walk to the stage during an event on the Rose Garden at the White House marking the 25th anniversary of the television series
Sheen exhorted the crowd to find something worth fighting for
“something deeply personal and uncompromising
something that can unite the will of the spirit with the work of the flesh.”
his cadence matching perfectly that of President Jed Bartlet
the character Sheen played for seven seasons
and then we will be able to help lift up this nation and all its people to that place where the heart is without fear
“The West Wing” remains a favorite of many who now work in Washington
Among those spotted in the Rose Garden were House Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul
once a tea party-aligned Illinois congressman who is now a sharp critic of former President Donald Trump and supporting Vice President Kamala Harris
“I’m partial to Martin Sheen because I want to be president one day.” (Walsh ran and lost a longshot Republican primary challenge to Trump in 2020.)
It was clear in the speeches and the party’s touches that at least a few “West Wing” fans work in the White House
Marine Band playing the opening notes to the show’s theme as Biden and the cast walked out
There were references to “big blocks of cheese” — a show tradition of requiring staffers to meet with eccentric or offbeat characters — and the walk-and-talk dialogues in which characters moved through the halls at high speed
Waiters passed out bourbon-and-ginger ale cocktails called “The Jackal,” a reference to press secretary C.J
Cregg’s dance and lip sync routine in one iconic episode
spoke after Sheen and referenced a bit of real-world politics: Biden’s decision not to seek a second term after his disastrous debate performance
Sorkin was among the high-profile Democrats who called for him to withdraw
writing a column for The New York Times with a potential “script” for Democrats to replace Biden as their nominee with a Republican
hours before Biden announced he would drop out
‘West Wing’ moments do happen,” he said Friday
we saw proof of that on the morning of July 21.”
Sorkin also recognized the cast members in attendance
who played communications director Toby Ziegler; Janel Moloney
who played assistant Donna Moss; and Dulé Hill
He noted the absence of a few high-profile actors — Allison Janney
as well as Bradley Whitford and Rob Lowe — who he said were on set elsewhere
“The rest of us are apparently unemployed,” he joked
East Auckland locals know Bev McConnell as the visionary owner
of the iconic Ayrlies Garden and Wetlands in Whitford for the last 60 years
Sixty years ago when we came here it was an active dairy farm with 150 milking cows and at that stage that was all that was between us and the road
I was allowed to create a garden on three acres
It wasn’t well received by the farming community because I was taking valuable farming land away from grazing cows
The garden grew from initially three acres to 10 in the first decade
Malcolm was a great provider and was prepared to support me in the creation of a garden
How has Ayrlies evolved over the years and how have those changes benefitted the property and its gardens
The year 1974 was momentous for the garden with the arrival of Oliver Briers from England
He was our head gardener and a meticulous craftsman
Oliver saw to the construction of many of the hard structural elements like the walks
He built the wonderful chorus of railway sleeper steps going up to the temple house
Another big milestone was the introduction of water into the garden in 1977
The construction of the 40-acre wetlands and lake on land that was once a salt marsh in 2000 is planted predominantly with native trees and grasses
It’s become a refuge for abundant birdlife adjacent to the coastal conservation area
What have been some of the highlights of creating Ayrlies
To create a large country garden and wetlands available year-round for visitors to enjoy underpinned by the ability to maintain and protect this green space – the garden and the wetlands – from creeping urban sprawl
We had a long-term vision and became part of something on the international stage
Among the great garden personalities who have been welcomed at Ayrlies are Beth Chatto
We welcome about 3000 visitors a year including many international visitors and the plant fair which attracts about 1000 people over two days
the consistent knowledgeable support of our very own New Zealand horticulturalists Jack Hobbs and Carolyn Ferraby remain a highlight
What do you enjoy the most about living at Ayrlies
I love it and there’s plenty of things to do and plenty of ideas
Why is it important for you to have public events at Ayrlies
We’ve hosted many charity events including by Opera New Zealand and Auckland Philharmonia and schools have staged musical days here with their bands and orchestras
The Trinity Garden Festival was a major fundraising event for several years
with a visitor entry fee that helps support funding a substantial renovation project in the garden or wetlands
So much of this work is supported by Jack Hobbs
who’s been the managing curator at Auckland Botanic Gardens for more than 20 years
How much work does it take to maintain Ayrlies and how many people are involved in that effort
It’s a huge garden and it takes a huge amount of energy
people and funding to maintain the standard of the garden and wetlands
dedicated team of four in the garden lead by highly knowledgeable and capable Ben Conway
He’s responsible over the last 15 years for leading a determined focus on increasing biodiversity through ecologically sustainable
organic practices supported by team members Abbie Taylor
Luana MacDonald co-ordinates the household
The McConnell family’s unwavering support and belief in the living artwork that is Ayrlies is fundamental
One family member (Jacqueline’s) keen involvement is vital to work with the team
to consistently review and evaluate the integrity and artistry of Ayrlies
Do you have a favourite part of the garden

Sharon Whitford was arrested on Tuesday by the SBI for the December 30th fatal shooting of Jimmy Lee Whitford at their home in Ernul
the woman's attorney claims the shooting was in self defense
scalp lacerations and other injuries due to what the attorney said was aggression by the husband after discovering her adulterous affair
and her attorney told the judge that was excessive and unreasonable
who worked 19 years for the Craven County Clerk of Courts Office
was originally in court on Wednesday for her first appearance
but that judge recused himself from the case
A special out-of-district judge presided this morning along with a special prosecutor
It appears that Whitford wore a bullet proof vest while in court
Judge Paul Hardison said the woman is to be electronically monitored
and she is not allowed to drive by the home of the victim's brother
Craven County Sheriff Jerry Monette said Lt
Dan Garden was involved with the murder suspect
and he has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation
The special prosecutor said Garden would not be facing any criminal charges in the case
A special prosecutor says there will be no criminal charges against a sheriff's lieutenant who was "involved with" a woman charged with killing her husband
Sharon Whitford was arrested on Tuesday by the SBI
The Craven County woman used to work for the Craven County Clerk of Courts Office
Sheriff Jerry Monette says the SBI was brought at his request
was involved with Sharon Whitford and my office would cooperate fully with their investigation," the sheriff said in a statement
Monette says after receiving information from the special prosecutor
Garden has been placed on administrative leave while he conducts an internal investigation

farm and outdoor merchandise will open a store in the Village of Wellsville next year after buying the old Kmart building vacated four years ago
Minnesota-based Runnings said it plans to open a store in the abandoned 94,000 square-foot space at the Riverwalk Plaza after reaching an agreement with the L.C
we felt that an important piece of the expansion was finding a strong retail partner for the building,” said Brad Whitford
“We’re very excited to finally have Runnings on board
It will be a momentous thing for Wellsville.”

Runnings has a long-standing history of purchasing vacant retail stores
the new store will employ approximately 40 full and part-time workers
executive director of the Allegany County Industrial Development Agency
called the store’s plans for Wellsville “a much-needed addition to Allegany County.”
“It will be the only retail (store) of any size in Allegany County,” Clarke said
“It’s a good win for everybody because you don’t like that store vacant
With the closest Runnings store to Wellsville in Jamestown
Clark said he expects the retailer to draw customers from “northern Pennsylvania and everything in between.”
Wellsville Mayor Randy Shayler said the village reached out to Runnings about a year ago when the company was already looking at Wellsville and the Riverwalk Plaza as a potential destination
Shayler said the village’s Economic Development Board sent an email to Runnings that said
we have this great opportunity and we are a great community.”

Whitford has been on trial for the past two weeks for the December 2017 shooting death of Jimmy Whitford
A judge late this afternoon sentenced her to serve between 20 and 25 years in state prison
She must also pay $15,000 in restitution to her husband's family
Whitford claimed she shot her husband in self-defense
Testimony revealed that the victim called his wife's lover saying he knew they were having an affair before he was shot that night
Whitford did not take the witness stand during the trial
The woman worked for 19 years in the Craven County Clerk of Court's Office so a special judge and special prosecutors were brought in for the trial
the victim's brother asked the judge to give her the toughest punishment possible
Jurors have started deliberating the fate of a former court clerk who is accused of killing her husband nearly three years ago
Sharon Whitford is on trial for the murder of Jimmy Whitford back in December 2017
Whitford worked for the Clerk of Court's Office for 19 years so a special judge and special prosecutor were brought in for the trial
Jurors began hearing closing arguments from attorneys at 12:30 p.m
They could reach one of four possible verdicts
A former lieutenant with the Craven County Sheriff's Office admits he was having an affair with a woman when her husband was murdered
This is the second week of testimony in the murder trial of Sharon Whitford
Dan Garden testified his affair with the woman began in September of that year
He told jurors the two communicated daily and had at least five sexual encounters
Garden said he received two calls the night of the shooting
He testified that the first came from the victim saying he knew Garden was having a relationship with his wife
Garden didn't participate in the investigation because of the conflict of interest and his employment contract wasn't renewed when Sheriff Chip Hughes took office a year later
Prosecutors then rested their case against Whitford
The judge denied a defense motion to dismiss the case based on a lack of evidence heard
Whitford's attorney told the judge that he does not expect the defendant to take the stand in her own defense
The defense could wrap up its testimony Thursday morning
The state moved closer to resting its case in the trial of a former Craven County Courthouse employee after calling 3 more witnesses to the stand Tuesday
Sharon Whitford is facing a murder charge in the shooting death of her husband in 2017
Three witnesses testified Monday and three more the following day as the state wrapped up its case in Craven County against Sharon Whitford Tuesday afternoon
The third and final witness called by the state Tuesday was William Kelly
Kelly is an expert in pathology and performed the autopsy on victim Jimmy Whitford
State prosecutors walked Kelly through his findings with jurors viewing gruesome photos in the process
Kelly highlighted several wounds on the victim's body
The first was an entrance wound from a bullet on the victim's abdomen
He also discussed a wound on the victim's left knee
The examiner said it's possible both wounds came from the same bullet
Kelly then showed evidence of an entrance wound on the victim's rear
right thigh and exit wound near the victim's right hip where one bullet was still lodged when he was taken to the Emergency Room
the testimony is relevant and shows the wounds are consistent with the victim potentially lying in fetal-like position on the floor
They said a hard surface kept the one bullet from exiting his hip
while also supporting the angle of the bullet that entered both the knee and abdomen
The autopsy information leads the state to determine the shots that killed him were not fired in self-defense
The state also called a forensic firearm identification expert on Tuesday
who found that at least one bullet was fired from a rifle found at the scene
That bullet was later found in the victim's hip
The state will continue its case on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m
Three more witnesses took the stand Monday as the murder trial for a former courthouse employee in Craven County reached its fifth day of testimony
Sharon Whitford is accused of shooting and killing her husband back in December of 2017
Monday the state continued to present its case
against the woman who says she was acting in self-defense
Whitford sat casually in the courtroom throughout the day as those witnesses took the stand
an investigator with the Craven County Sheriff's Office
concluded his testimony which began last Friday
Marinez was on scene shortly after the shooting took place
He said blood was found in the couple's bedroom
He also said that there was at least three apparent bullet holes throughout the house upon his arrival
Marinez was responsible for photographing and collecting evidence
much of which the jury had an opportunity to see
including shell casings from the shots that were fired
The state also called Nick Deming from the State Bureau of Investigation who reviewed cell phone records between the defendant and the sheriff's deputy with whom she was having a relationship at the time
as well as between the defendant and the victim
The state also called a forensics scientist from the North Carolina State Crime Lab to the stand on Monday and will continue calling witnesses when the trial resumes Tuesday morning
New witnesses testified Thursday in the trial of an eastern Carolina woman accused of killing her husband in 2017
who worked for 19 years in the Craven County Clerk of Courts Office
is accused of killing Jimmy Lee Whitford at their home in Ernul back on December 30th
Because of her connection to the court system
a special prosecutor and special judge have been brought in to hear the case
Thursday the court heard from Sergeant Michael Sawyer
who says he listened to Whitford's claim that she shot her husband inside their home following an aggressive domestic dispute between the couple
Sawyer testified that he looked at the evidence himself and believes the pellets looked like they were shot from outside the house
As for injuries Whitford claimed were at the hands of her husband
where one discussed how a previous write-up about Whitford's CT scan on her head may have been wrong
Although a previous write-up said there were acute findings from the scan
she says that was a typo and that there were no acute findings
The defense said they found six typos in one nurse's chart for Whitford
The nurses said they use a dictation system where they talk and it translates into writing and that this naturally happens sometimes
Whitford was arrested in February of 2018 and released from jail after posting a $100,000 bond
A former courthouse employee is standing trial for the 2017 murder of her husband
they have brought in a special prosecutor and special judge to hear the case
in tears as the 9-1-1 call placed following the shooting was played in the courtroom for the jury
That call was made by the victim's brother
who was the first witness to be called to the stand Tuesday by the state
the victim's brother testified that his brother called him to tell him he had been shot twice
and he placed the 9-1-1 call as he raced to the couples home
the prosecution told the jury the murder took place by a skilled hunter
a woman experienced with guns who knew exactly what she was doing
Whitford's attorney has previously said the suspect suffered several injuries during a domestic dispute that occurred after her husband discovered she was having an affair with a then-lieutenant with the Craven County Sheriff's Office
It was during that aggressive altercation that they say Whitford pulled the trigger in self-defense
Whitford was arrested in February of 2018 and was released from jail after posting a $100,000 bond
she is not to have any contact with the victim's family
in addition to the suspension of her concealed carry permit

Shoalnook Cabins in Galena may be exactly what you desire
the four log cabins perched on a slight rise overlooking the James River offer every comfort and few intrusions from the outside world — no phones
wireless Internet access is available for those who can’t completely pull the plug
James says he and wife Marsha found the cabins one day about three years ago while taking what they intended to be a day trip through the area
“We love to pick a spot on the map that has blue (indicating water) … and get on the motorcycle and take off,” he says
“We stumbled on this place and noticed an overgrown ‘for sale’ sign,” James says
The couple asked if they could book a cabin and started talking about the possibility of buying Shoalnook
The discussion continued until about a year ago
when the Whitfords decided to buy the cabins
a home nearby and the roughly 25 acres on which they all sit

“It was just funny when we stayed here the first time,” Marsha says
“It was like walking into my grandma’s living room.”
Marsha set to work revamping the cabins’ décor
Rocks she’d gathered along the riverfront soon were transformed into artful displays to hang on the walls
Each cabin can sleep up to eight people and features a full kitchen filled with everything a cook might need
Located just two blocks from Galena’s historic “Y Bridge,” the cabins are particularly popular for anglers and floaters
but Marsha says families and groups often book all four cabins for get-togethers or retreats
One group booked the cabins for a wedding that took place on the bridge
we had a couple that hadn’t been here before and they came three times last year,” Marsha says
While all the cabins are neatly appointed and amply comfortable
Marsha says she still has some ideas for improvements
“Once we really get our bearings about what we’re doing here … we’d really like to invest and put in hot tubs and maybe a fireplace,” she says
we are featuring ideas for treating yourself to a mid-winter break

More than 450 householders living in two mobile home parks on the south side of town are poised to cut a deal that few of them ever dreamed possible – outbidding a national real estate developer to buy the land under their homes that they have only ever rented
The conversion from renters – subject to constant increases – to landowners in a housing cooperative could come as soon as Wednesday when a $23 million transaction to buy Cranberry Village and Pine Tree Village is expected to be signed
Some residents are all but pinching themselves
I just saw somebody at the mailbox who said
‘I never thought this could happen.’ It’s a feeling of security and comfort,” said 68-year-old Kathy Scanzillo
who has lived in Cranberry Village since 1999
watching her rent climb from $285 to $526 a month
Cranberry and Pine Tree Villages will join a growing but still very small number of mobile home parks across the country that have made the leap from rentals to resident-owned co-ops
Of the roughly 50,000 mobile parks in the U.S., only between 800 and 1,000 are resident-owned, according to ROC (Resident Owned Communities)-USA
a nonprofit organization in New Hampshire that works in 23 states to help residents of mobile home parks become landowners and helped finance the Carver deal
An estimated three million Americans live in mobile home parks
and many of them are poor or retirees surviving on Social Security checks
“They are probably the largest aggregate inventory of affordable housing in the country,” said David Smith, CEO of the Affordable Housing Institute in Boston
But mobile homes – which aren’t even mobile – are typically neglected
socially disrespected and fail to accrue value while rents keep increasing
and others like it – where residents will own a share of the land and finally have a say in how their mobile home parks are run – could challenge those financial downsides and social stigmas
“It’s like a new democracy,” said 63-year-old Larry Erickson
in a two-bedroom double-wide home that they bought a few years ago for $40,000
We could reduce the rents or do tree work and fix potholes,” said Erickson
a retired museum educator who is now a newly-elected board member of the fledgling Pine Tree Village association
Andy Danforth, the housing manager of a Shelburne Falls nonprofit that partners with ROC-USA and worked with the Carver residents
said the transformation from renters to owners brings “empowerment.” That’s what Erickson and other organizers in Pine Tree Village feel when they talk about reversing some of the stigma hanging over their park
“Some people think Pine Tree Village has a reputation
names showing up in police reports,” said Erickson
meeting with the police.” Town leaders predict improvements
Town Administrator Richard LaFond said an ownership stake for mobile home park residents means they’ll do a “better job of keeping up” the park than a landlord
“It gives them some control of their destiny,” said selectman and conservation agent Sarah Hewins. “I think it’s terrific for the residents.” The two mobile home parks were nearly bought by another landlord, Chicago-based Equity LifeStyle Properties
which owns more than 380 mobile home parks across the U.S.
which it bought last year for $2.26 million
Equity LifeStyle markets its parks as “resort communities” with swimming pools and golf courses that come with higher rents
Residents at the Carver parks were notified in December about Equity’s bid and were scared that their days were numbered
“The threat of a conglomerate legally throwing us out or raising our rents forced us to find an alternative,” said Bill Frazier
the new board treasurer at Pine Tree Village
“What was at stake was our homes,” said Erickson
“A lot of people in this park are struggling
unemployed.” But a Massachusetts state law enacted in 1993 gave residents at the Carver parks the right to bid after Equity Lifestyle’s offer
rental income from the two parks generates about $240,000 a month
the residents’ new cooperative could finance a nearly $23 million offer to buy both parks from their landlord David Piper Sr
The two parks will have a 30-year mortgage
fixed at 5.9 percent for the first 15 years
who will continue to consult with residents as they learn to manage their cooperative
Working together to win residents’ votes in support of the purchase also fostered a new neighborliness that wasn’t as strong before even though their homes are sandwiched so close to each other
“You know your neighbors by name now,” said Erickson

“Hunter was a fertility baby,” Brown said. “We loved him to the moon and back.”
Edmonton police said an autopsy done on the baby Wednesday determined he died of smoke inhalation. They say fire was deliberately set and have opened a homicide investigation.
Brown urged anyone with information to call police, and had a message for whoever was behind the blaze.
“Whoever started the fire, I don’t know if they did it as a prank or whatever, but it’s past a prank now, people, you almost killed six or seven people, you did kill one person.”
Downstairs tenant Kyle Whitford, 24, returned Wednesday to the burned ruins at 1040 Armitage Cres. He escaped through a basement window and helped rescue two children and pets from the fire.
Whitford broke down into tears as he began to process his trauma. He met Brown and Tang two-and-a-half years ago and the three quickly became friends.
“It’s really sad, it’s really sad to hear (Hunter) died. I’m really sad for Angie and Cordell’s loss,” said Whitford.
Covenant Health late Wednesday said Tang is in stable, but critical condition in hospital.
Tamara Schmidt, who lives in the area, stopped at the burned house Wednesday afternoon and was shocked to see the devastation.
“It’s such a hard story to hear, a little one is lost and the mom is suffering,” she said, having laid a bouquet of yellow flowers outside the safety fence.
“The family is going to be feeling this for years to come… it’s always going to stay with them. Hopefully, they see the flowers and know there is support,” said Schmidt.
Schmidt said she was scared after hearing the fire was arson and is ensuring her doors and windows are locked tight.

He said it’s a rare five-bedroom family home sandwiched between three colleges in Newtown’s schools precinct
“What surprises me is how private it is with the high fences and the beautiful garden
It’s like another world in there,” Mr Whitford said
The enclosed first floor balcony has views to Corio Bay
The landmark house is laced with period features
like pressed metal ceilings and ornate plasterwork
while leadlight windows create a nice sense of arrival
There are three bedrooms on the ground floor
with another two upstairs where an enclosed balcony has views across the city to Corio Bay
The 899sq m property has an extensive garden and swimming pool

When Soraya and Mark Hendesi returned from Dubai 10 years ago
But when they saw this almost-new house and lush grounds on Whitford's Clifton Peninsula
"We fell in love and bought it," recalls Soraya
"The fresh country air is like oxygen to us when we travel so much." Like their award-winning skincare brand
Snowberry - marketed internationally - the green lifestyle is more than skin-deep
The house also combines modern convenience with traditional charms
lace-trimmed verandas and sandy-coloured recycled bricks recall Australian colonial homes
Contemporary technology includes a bore and waste-water treatment and irrigation system
deep verandas and clouds of white roses suggest a more gracious era of country living
open-plan family area conceal under-floor heating
The traditional Smallbone kitchen includes a butler's sink and basket drawers
while an efficient pantry is concealed in a country pine armoire
"People go straight to that stove when they come in," says Soraya
"and it turns out the perfect roast as well." A central tiled island is another popular gathering place
while the generous dining area has seated 25 people
but Soraya prefers the double-sided Hinuera stone fireplace that divides the formal dining and living rooms
she loves reading beside the blazing fire and even planted chestnut trees so she could roast nuts on it
Hosting extended family is one of the reasons Soraya bought such a large house
One end of the ground floor houses a suite with living area
a romantic master bedroom suite offers country views from dormer windows
A large walk-in wardrobe opens into the bathroom
where modern luxury - a spa bath - is softened by Victorian-style fittings
a skylit storage area could become an office or even a nursery
While Soraya was developing the Snowberry line
her home office was in another dormer-windowed room above the separate triple car garage
That space could become another guest suite
serviced by the bathroom in the ground-floor laundry below
The biggest joy of country living is the great outdoors
A lush subtropical garden is reached from French doors and shady verandas opening off all the living areas
stone terraces edged in palms and lawns feel like a mini resort
The pool-room with bathroom and kitchen opens up to become a bar that held more than 200 at Snowberry's launch
Soraya and Mark watch sunsets over the fully fenced property to the estuary
"It's a perfect place to launch kayaks and paddle to Whitford village and cafes," says Soraya
With her professional interest in organics
Soraya has planted vegetable beds and an orchard boasting apple
It's because of their Snowberry Gardens plantation that Soraya and Mark are selling
Despite the convenience of living only 10 minutes from Botany or 15 minutes from the motorway and their Manukau laboratory
but someone else will love this sanctuary as much as we have," says Soraya
Rare plot of land is home to ancient kauri trees
given no comment on the deal by Michael Coombs
but sources say it sold at the top of the range
The Burran Avenue residence carried a $20 million to $22 million guide most recently
It is the third sale in the $20 million-plus range this year in Mosman
topped by the $22 million February sale of the Adamo family mansion to Mengyao Ling
a business partner to Olympian Michael Klim in his Milk & Co skincare range
Whitford listed his prized trophy home in Mosman’s Golden Triangle a month after that sale amid plans to make a permanent sea change to his South Coast farm
“Buying Burran Avenue was a real privilege for me, having lived in housing commission when I was young and going to Merrylands High School, but it’s just not me,” Whitford told Title Deeds in March
If the economic situation playing out makes it a bad time to sell
we’re happy to hold out for the right time to sell or right buyer.”
Whitford was a senior executive at education outfit Vocation at the time he bought the clifftop house on Burran Avenue in 2014 for $16 million from Lavender Bay-bound recruitment industry boss Geoff Morgan and his wife Roslyn
Whitford resigned after a fallout with Vocation’s management
only to see his shareholding plummet the next year when the group was placed in voluntary administration
Brett Whitford says $23m Mosman digs is ‘not me’
Milk & Co partner snaps up $20m Mosman house
The start-up investor has not been idle since
having been adjunct professor at the University of Technology Sydney until 2016 and more recently diverting his interests towards his 57-hectare Angus cattle farm at Jamberoo
where he is set to oversee a move to sustainable farming techniques and become more involved in the Gilmore electorate in the wake of the devastating bushfires
The third-highest sale in Mosman this year was the $20 million deal on the Alex Popov-designed residence on Balmoral slopes of childcare mogul Brendan McAssey to shopping centre uber-agent Simon Rooney and his wife Kristen.
