Longtime meteorologist and Rapid City-area foodie Eric Gardner has died
KOTA-TV said he’s been with organization since 2002 and was also well-known in the regional culinary and wine scenes
“Eric was an amazing co-worker and a beloved part of the community here in the Black Hills," a statement from KOTA news staff said
"Our thoughts go out to Eric’s family and friends
as he will by all of us here at KOTA Territory.”
Edward Gardner conducted the New World Symphony Saturday night in Miami Beach
British conductor Edward Gardner exudes uninhibited energy on the podium
That unflagging pulse radiates in every bar of the music he leads
Conducting the New World Symphony’s final program of the season Saturday night at the New World Center
expressive reading of Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra
Principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Norwegian Opera and Ballet
Gardner is clearly a formidable orchestral technician
Written in 1943 when the composer was dying from leukemia
Bartók’s score is often rendered purely as an orchestral showpiece and it can succeed on those terms
Gardner’s performance offered considerably more
He astutely balanced the music’s glittering profile with underlying nostalgic pathos
From the first bars of the slow introduction
it was obvious that this was not going to be a routine read-through of this 20th century masterpiece
The usually muffled timpani part was clearly audible
an ominous rumble beneath the short brass motifs
Gardner seasoned the brusque theme of the Allegro section with a dose of Hungarian paprika
clarinet and oboe solos emerged strong and well defined
The clipped rhythmic pattern of the Allegro scherzando (second movement) was given an extra shot of momentum
Gardner cut to the heart of the Bartókian night music in the Elegia
which Gardner assayed with special clarity
The New World fellows excelled in Bartók’s demanding orchestral writing
with the burnished tonal glow of the violas particularly outstanding
A fast tempo in the Intermezzo avoided exaggerated sentimentality in the secondary theme
while the rapid section resounded in robust fashion
The brass burps had the proper witty contrast
All of which was merely a prelude to the Presto finale with Gardner ramping up the excitement by several notches
The brass registered solid impact and the entire ensemble proved fully equal to the challenges and intricacies of Bartók’s soundscape
Individual instrumental and sectional details in the fugal passages were clean and transparent
aided by the New World Center’s clarifying acoustic
Gardner had the players firing on all cylinders in the coda
concluding a stellar performance of a singular orchestral creation
Perhaps this was because it is one of the few concertos for the instrument that does not have a solo cadenza
many leading violinists have added the work to their repertoire and for good reason
The score is chock full of the kind of Czech melodies that defined its composer and there is ample opportunity for solo pyrotechnical display
Gil Shaham has recently championed the work and he gave a stellar performance Saturday night with Gardner a consummate collaborator
In nearly four decades on the world’s concert stages
Shaham’s technique is not only intact but stronger and more secure than ever
He brought all of that to Dvořák’s canvass
capturing the songful sentimentality of Dvořák’s lyrical music
brisk touch to the main furiant theme of the finale
adding hefty rubato in the central dumka section
Shaham and Gardner seemed to breathe the music together
Garner fully brought forth the Czech spirit and color of Dvořák’s orchestration
A standing ovation brough Shaham back for a pastiche encore
Telling the audience that his Dvořák performance was delayed by the Covid pandemic and lockdown
Mixing tuneful tango and jazz melodies with quotes from Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto
Shaham gave the same artistry to this novel vignette that he brings to pillars of the instrumental literature
He seemed to be enjoying tossing off this cameo as much as the audience
Conducting fellow Molly Turner opened the program with Song of the Enchanter by British composer Thea Musgrave
Conceived in 1990 as a tribute to the 125th anniversary of the birth of Jean Sibelius
Musgrave’s six-minute piece is based on an episode in the Finnish epic The Kalevala (on which Sibelius based some of his tone poems)
With harp strokes audible over whirling winds and serene strings
there is more than a suggestion of impressionism
Aleatoric or chance elements are blended into the shimmering coloration
Turner has shown a real affinity for complex contemporary scores during her two seasons with the ensemble
she led a finely textured performance that fully realized Musgrave’s deft soundscape
Gardner told the audience that working with the New World fellows was inspirational and that
the level of players now in the orchestra is outstanding
their performance level has been consistently high
regardless of the strengths or weaknesses of the conductor on the podium
All of which bodes well for the Miami Beach academy as well as the future of symphonic music making
The New World Symphony repeats the program 2 p.m. Sunday at the New World Center in Miami Beach. nws.edu

The Demon Deacons look to continue a three-game win streak
Several North Carolina universities are facing financial trouble
Colleges are closing at the rate of approximately one per week
Forbes College Financial Grades 2025 is an evaluation of a college's financial health
a private Christian school in Boiling Springs
made that list with a grade of D and a score of 1.363
According to a statement from the university
the school is doing well financially and not in danger of closing
"The article from Forbes uses four-year-old data," the statement said
"There are also more than 40 data points that higher education institutions use to measure financial health
Gardner-Webb University continues to have positive enrollment trends
and positive performance on our institutional endowment investments
which are significant compared to some on this list
Our financial health at GWU continues to be sound."
According to data and information from ProPublica
Gardner-Webb University's 2023 fiscal year saw a revenue of $97.3 million and expenses of $99.3 million
Other universities on the list are facing closure
The school recently announced that it was facing the decision to either close or move to strictly online classes and ultimately announced it would close after attempting a last-ditch fundraising campaign
it said that Limestone University’s Board of Trustees has announced that
absent the university obtaining immediate financial support in the amount of $6 million
the institution will need to move to a fully online model
to begin the process of ceasing operations
It launched a "Together for Limestone" fundraising campaign to keep the doors open but Tuesday evening
we share the news that Limestone University will close at the end of the current academic semester," it said
the Board of Trustees voted to discontinue both on-campus and online programs following an extensive but ultimately unsuccessful effort to secure the necessary funding to continue operations
We are deeply grateful to the nearly donors who contributed in recent weeks
Limestone has shaped lives and served generations of students with pride
That legacy will live on through the thousands of Saints who carry Limestone in their hearts."
also recently announced the university would be closing
and it would be holding its final graduation ceremony this spring
It received a Forbes score of 1.187 and a grade of D
strategic review and exhaustive recovery efforts," a post said on the school's Facebook
"We are conveying this news with a shared commitment to transparency
Andrews has worked diligently to balance affordability
Despite these efforts and the steadfast dedication of its faculty
the financial realities of maintaining operations in Laurinburg have become unsustainable."
examined the Forbes 2024 Financial Health Failing Grades and what it might mean
"Having taught a class on Institutional Instability in 2019 and been a student of higher education for more than 30 years
I have a fascination with how and when colleges may stumble and fall," he said
Forbes has attempted to assess institutional financial instability
I am not sure their relatively complex analysis gets the credit it deserves."
He said they use nine factors to create the grades and score
“To build Forbes’ annual college financial grades list
they pulled the latest available financial data from the National Center for Education Statistics
they ranked 1,000 colleges that enrolled at least 500 full-time students," he wrote
there are a total of eight North Carolina colleges or universities on the failing list
The South Carolina universities on the list consist of Erskine College
The show provided some new information about the case including details about Aaron Pennington's depression
the couple's marital problems and the fact that Breanne Pennington had reached out to local law enforcement just days before she was killed
Robert Parr of the Massachusetts State Police
police in Gardner logged a number of incidents that had occurred at the Pennington home
“They ranged from Aaron acting erratically to Breanne’s concerns for his mental health,” Parr said
while Aaron Pennington was on a trip to California
Breanne had called Gardner police to inquire about getting a restraining order against her husband
according to documents obtained by the show’s producers
she was dead,” said Breanne’s aunt Brenda Hull
who said she believed the couple’s problems began when they lived in Okinawa
where Aaron Pennington was stationed in 2014
“Aaron was really struggling at this point and there was depression — he was never that military type of man’s man,” she said
adding that the couple had moved to Gardner after Aaron Pennington was discharged in 2021
“He obtained a new job with a defense contractor in Massachusetts and they found a new church community.”
But Hull said the couple continued to have problems and that her niece had confided to a friend just days before she was murdered that she had decided to leave Aaron Pennington and take her children to Texas to live with family
Played on the show was a portion of the 911 call from a neighbor who told police that the Pennington children had come to her house and said they did not know where their father had gone and that they could not get into the bedroom where their mother was
described on the show as a church leader with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
said he was contacted by a neighbor about the incident and went to the Penningtons’ home to find out what had happened
He said he and another person entered the house and called out for Breezy
he said he tried to open the couple’s bedroom door
but it had been blocked from the inside by a dresser
More: Breezy Pennington's murder to be featured on 'America's Most Wanted': How to watch
“I remember seeing Breezy laying in the bed with her head facing away,” said Corbett
who called 911 and described a bloody scene: “There’s a woman in the bed
Corbett said he got to know the Penningtons when they moved to the area and joined the church
“Aaron mentioned to me that depression ran in his family,” Corbett said
there was a darkness — he spent all the time talking to me about his worries and his anxieties.”
Corbett said Aaron Pennington had concerns his wife was into tarot cards
getting tattoos and distancing herself from her religion
He added that Aaron Pennington was also having trouble keeping a job
“The bills were coming in and not being paid,” said Hull

Josh Wyatt has seen the negative comments on Reddit
the venue and events company behind The Brooklyn Mirage
he cares deeply about what fans are saying: online
Wyatt was hired in October to rebrand and revamp Avant Gardner
the colossal East Williamsburg nightclub complex known for hosting some of the biggest names in electronic music
The 51-year-old Harvard-educated executive welcomes fan feedback
but he’s quick to note what feels constructive and what leans toward trolling
“There’s a lot of — how should I say this politely — misunderstanding in terms of the level of deeply sophisticated
globally experienced partners and collaborators that are working on this,” Wyatt explained of the open-air club’s bold new redesign
dubbed “Mirage 4.0.” “We took this very seriously
I’m very aware of certain things circulating online where you have a 24-year-old TikToker
the most sophisticated prefabricated wood structure ever built in the United States.”
In an exclusive interview with BKMAG just days before the venue’s first party
Wyatt opened up about his vision and how Avant Gardner will be “forcefully transparent” moving forward
he wants to stop rumors about the Mirage not being ready on May 1
promising they’ll “100 percent” be open
“It’s an interesting sociological experiment watching some of the comments come in,” Wyatt noted
let the professionals cook—and come and see what we actually deliver.”
What Wyatt and Avant Gardner have promised to deliver is nothing short of breathtaking
Looking at renderings of the newly designed Brooklyn Mirage
A futuristic-looking structure featuring three levels of mezzanines looks straight out of The Metropolitan Opera
A massive screen with more than 3,000 LED tiles wraps around the DJ booth
One hundred precision-calibrated speakers and subwoofers dot the dancefloor
A fully kinetic shutter system for the screen sits at the ready
it pays homage to the early days of the Mirage
it promises the same breathtaking visuals of last season
The malleability promises no two shows would ever be the same
Wyatt is refreshingly candid about his employer’s checkered past
He acknowledges the need for a fresh start
and said he’s fully committed to changing fans’ perception
“I believe that given some of the challenges and the past—before my time
to be clear—that incremental change was not gonna do it,” he said
“I felt that it would have created more pressure on me
It would have created more pressure on the company to try to tinker around the edges
I felt that this was not an around-the-edges nip and tuck
This had to be a fundamental rebuild of how we do business.”
A post shared by The Brooklyn Mirage (@brooklynmirage)
One point of emphasis was improving the General Admission experience
To accommodate the expansion of the venue’s capacity from 5,500 to 6,250
Wyatt said they’ve “dramatically expanded” the GA dance floor
and installing a second room called AG Arts
including an upcoming Martinez Brothers event
will also offer access to a second stage in The Great Hall
it looks like they built a VIP palace.’ It’s just not true,” he says
“It’s fake news.” Other improvements include easier entry
better-trained security guards and support staff
additional space to conduct “side quests,” safer conditions outside the venue
Starting prices on well drinks have dropped to $15
Ready-to-drink beverages like canned cocktails come in at $12
A new “Sunset Cocktail” happy hour offers $10 specials and $8 beers
“We’ve absolutely looked at the pricing for GA and addressed it,” Wyatt says
“Come the first night and take a photo of the drink prices if you don’t believe me
I actually went through the menu personally
I can guarantee you no one else can beat it.”
“The Bodega,” a nod to New York City’s ubiquitous corner stores
will sell clubbing essentials like earplugs
They’ve installed 2,500 lockers instead of a more expensive coat check
They’ve built 15 water stations all over the campus—a welcome addition
as far too many venues across the city lack adequate free water access
don’t “sound like a big deal and it’s maybe not press release worthy
The Brooklyn Mirage is also offering membership plans starting at $1,900
which contain tickets to every party—including Black Coffee’s residency and Keinemusik in Flushing Meadows Corona Park—dedicated entry
and a one-time $100 food and beverage credit
Single ticket prices still lean on the more expensive side
compared to other venues with a single room and $22 drinks
you’re still getting more bang for your buck
Those who want a more luxurious experience
can still do so with a table in the VIP areas lining the sides of the dance floor

It’s hard to find a club kid or audiophile in New York City who hasn’t attended a show at the Mirage
And there have been at least three drug overdose deaths at the complex since it opened in 2017
There were also allegations of oversold shows, though Wyatt firmly denies them. Partygoers have complained of brusk security teams decked out in military-esque gear confiscating Narcan, a nasal spray that can reverse narcotic overdoses in emergency situations. There has been a seemingly never-ending battle with the New York State Liquor Authority since the venue opened
and it has had a contentious relationship with the local community board
though that did little to quell viral vitriol
all of those stumbles happened before he was brought on to lead the company
“I’m aware of the company’s history
“I have a complete 180-degree change that I’ve enacted into the company since October
One of his initial decisions was to throw a free party in October as a thank you to fans at the end of last season
“Free” is not a word often associated with a party at the Mirage
let alone one headlined by a major band like Jungle
a video montage told patrons to expect a makeover next season
This was the equivalent of a restaurant announcing “under new management.” Attendees of that show saw it as a positive first step toward fostering a new relationship with its fans
“If they can replicate the Jungle experience
I would go back to the Mirage more often than I did in the past
because that night was so much fun,” says Bushwick resident and longtime Mirage patron Meghna Fogla
My friends and I were able to go to the bathroom
and come back to our meeting spot with no issue,” Fogla added
If that could be the norm instead of the exception
that would be great.” Soon after that show
a letter from Wyatt was published promising sweeping changes
A post shared by Josh Wyatt (@therealjoshwyatt)
Wyatt and his team claim they’ve delivered on each of those promises
and an ambitious $30 million redesign come with increased scrutiny
Add in the pressure to course-correct from previous blunders
and there’s a seemingly small margin for error
calling it an “honor and privilege” to be in his position
Though he’s the first to admit there will be hiccups along the way
this is a huge operation that we’re about to open
This is not gonna be like a well-oiled machine on May 1st
it takes time to tweak and tinker and to look at what works and what doesn’t work
said she’s eager to see how the Mirage’s improvements benefit public safety
but she wants to ensure the venue can peacefully coexist with a busy manufacturing zone
“That means everything from managing crowds and patrons and keeping them safe to cleaning the streets,” she said
“Our district’s economy depends on the health of both the industrial sector and venues like this—and everyone operating here must be held to a standard that protects that balance.”
Fogla is cautiously optimistic but is rooting for the Mirage’s success
so it’s hard to separate the two for now,” Fogla says
“But if they actually deliver on everything they promise
they would get old fans to come back because Mirage has been here for so long
and so many of us have seen our favorite DJs and had so many unforgettable nights there.”

Mougey said prior to last weekend's draft that those discussions are an ongoing process
"In terms of contracts and extensions on any players

Gardner quickly flashed as one of the NFL's top cornerbacks
He was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2022 and was selected as a first-team All-Pro in each of his first two seasons
He's recorded 40 PDs and 181 tackles in 48 career games

I'm definitely excited to be back on the field with him for sure"
the Jets moved back into the first round to select Johnson out of Florida State
He came into his own in the 2023 season when he logged 7.5 sacks and was named as a Pro Bowl alternate
His 2024 season was cut short when he sustained a torn Achilles tendon in Week 2 game against the Titans
"Jermaine's been doing a really good job," Glenn said of Johnson the NFL Meeting
"I've known him since he came out of college
We actually coached him in the Senior Bowl
I know exactly what he brings to the table
He is working his (butt) off to get to where he needs to be
and that player has a lot of confidence in who he is
so we're looking forward to him getting back on the field."

Gardner is a Defensive Rookie of the Year and two-time All-Pro.
Gardner has made public his relationship with Grammy-nominated rapper Ice Spice
And there are some lessons to be learned here
Let's call them "Taylor Swift Dating Lessons.''
Gardner and Ice Spice posted on Instagram a photo of themselves posing together in front of a bathroom mirror
The two of them have seemed to slow-burn their relationship after being seen together multiple times throughout the month of April
and the Instagram photo all but confirmed they are an official couple
As Ice Spice and Gardner continue to rise in their respective professions, they could be the next power couple in the NFL and music industries ... yes, similar to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.
Ice Spice - born in The Bronx as Isis Naija Gaston - attended multiple games at MetLife Stadium this past season
Her presence at the games appears to have been no coincidence after hard launching her relationship with Gardner on social media
all following the launching of her career - which was in part highlighted by her collaboration on the song "Karma'' with ..
The two happen to be pals, having been seen together at events like the Super Bowl and the VMAs
Ice Spice has actually referred to Swift as her "closest celebrity friend.''
There are mixed feelings from fans on social media about the validity of the romantic relationship between Gardner and Ice Spice
One user claimed the relationship would only last three months
On the other hand - again, "Taylor Swift Dating Lessons'' - there are only so many things that a person in the spotlight can control
Some Jets fans are proud that Gardner is happy outside of football by finding a new love interest
The opinions of fans on social media regarding their relationship should not phase Gardner and Ice Spice as they are two young adults trying to find love in one another maybe in part by understanding what Swift and Kelce have surely come to grips with ..
But they are likely left having to tolerate it

Reviewing Trump’s career as a real estate developer
one can start to understand how his disdain for government bureaucracy and the institutions that created it could develop
Every builder and developer I know cannot wait to tell you a myriad of stories about how some seemingly ridiculous regulation or conflicting regulators unnecessarily cost them millions of dollars and months of wasted time on a project
I have my own stories of completed project construction following the exact letter of plans that were pre-approved by regulators only to be completely torn down and rebuilt because of a half inch discrepancy in pipe sizes required by a different regulatory inspector
Government regulators and inspectors sometimes seem insensitive or oblivious to the fact that an entrepreneur may have his or her entire life savings on the line in such circumstances
It is not just developers and builders that experience deep frustration when dealing with the tedium of government bureaucracy
I have a friend who is an environmentalist and land acquirer
You can physically see his face turn red as he describes the hodge podge of overlapping Federal
State and County regulations he must navigate to simply build a road so that he can access a property he owns
He would never want to harm an endangered species but complains about what some regulators consider “endangered”
Some species are so plentiful on our planet that they are considered invasive in many counties
but if their population is dwindling in one particular county
then they may still be considered endangered triggering numerous regulations and onerous restrictions
I think every adult I have ever spoken with on this subject has had multiple firsthand negative experiences with bureaucracy
I cringe each year as I pay my tax firm tens of thousands of dollars to navigate the plethora of ever-changing tax codes
Its only deliverable is to navigate a legal maze of shifting regulations to tell me how much money I owe the government each year
Frustration with our bureaucracy is not limited to those who live here
Immigrants wanting to legally enter the US face an almost unassailable gauntlet of bureaucracy
so much so that it now costs an average of over $40,000 in legal fees for an immigrant to hire the required legal expertise needed to navigate it
For immigrants crossing our southern border in hopes of landing minimum wage jobs
the complexity and cost of legal entry leaves them with no entry option other than an illegal crossing
and with complexity comes the seeds of our undoing
Having built and invested in early-stage technology companies my entire life
I have had the privilege and sometimes horror of watching nimble and efficient startups grow into large enterprises with many layers of management
When directors are granted a fiefdom to rule
they usually do not just want to manage the status quo
They almost always want to expand it and leave their mark upon the organization
Government and industry bureaucrats are no different
They continue to “improve” upon the system they run by trying to regulate every possible use case
This eventually leads to a labyrinth of regulations
and interpretations that are so complex that only a full time professional in such regulatory fields can hope to navigate them
Yuval Noah Harari makes an excellent case for bureaucracies as a necessary evil in his book
demonstrating how it is impossible to run any large company or government without them
I can find no credible data that indicates any mass corruption in US government institutions but there is also no data indicating that these institutions are particularly efficient
The US bureaucrats I know are very sincere
They view their mission as an almost sacred trust to protect us from those that would sell us unsafe products
their departments continue to grow and expand to the point that they can also cause harm to the very people they were established to protect
well-meaning Democrats have pushed for more consumer protections which often translated into more government regulation and bureaucracy
These expansions were often necessary to address new emerging problems and technologies
they often forget that bureaucracies also need to be perpetually pruned
there are still some laws and regulations on the books today that were written to address problems caused by prohibition or even slave ownership
functioning garden requires a careful balance of growing and pruning
There have been attempts at pruning like the paperwork reduction act but in general
lawmakers remain quick to grow and painfully slow at pruning
Trump was able to tap into the frustration many Americans feel when having to deal with the ever-growing US bureaucracy
His supporters wanted change and were eager to believe almost any negative statement made about US institutions
Bureaucrats must learn to police the institutions they form with perpetual simplification and efficiency initiatives
or someone like Trump is eventually going to come along and try to burn it all down
the only thing worse than an inefficient bureaucracy is a gutted

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Junior Merik Carter went 4-for-5 from the dish with three RBIs but it was not enough as the Gardner-Webb (16-29) baseball team dropped a 19-7 contest at Western Carolina (23-21) on Tuesday evening inside Hennon Stadium

The Runnin' Bulldogs were able to scratch across one run in the top of the fourth after Kennell singled through the left side while allowing Lawson Knight to cross the plate

ballooning its lead to 19-4 heading into the seventh
were able to tally three runs in the top of the seventh but it was not enough as Western closed out the run-rule victory

Eagle columnist Ralph Gardner's granddaughter Aggie road tests her new John Deere toy lawnmower
Nothing brings on questions about my competence and self-worth like facing the challenge of putting something together
Advocates for ideas and draws conclusions based on the interpretation of facts and data
If you subscribe to Harvard professor Howard Gardner’s (no relation) theory of multiple intelligences
there are at least seven of them — not just the verbal and mathematical skills that I was led to believe were all that mattered back in high school
where nature appears to have grossly and unfairly short-changed me
the ability to discern logical and numerical patterns; and spatial-visual
When I succeed in hammering a nail into a wall more or less straight
I’m filled with a sense of achievement — even more so
when I manage to follow a set of instructions and assemble even the most rudimentary purchase
Allow me to offer just one of my many failures and the existential self-doubt it caused
I bought a propane patio heater since entertaining friends
I’d never previously faced such a complicated set of instructions
and an inescapable sense of preordained failure only increased the likelihood that I’d bomb
Yet somehow I managed to put the appliance together: the brushed metal base that hid the propane canister
the long neck that led to the burners beneath the towering canopy
all the applicable and potentially combustible gas connections secured
The end result was a gleaming edifice that looked exactly the way it did in the instruction manual
ignite the burners and bask in the socially distanced camaraderie of family and friends
several of whom were gathered for the grand unveiling
but my daughter who’d witnessed similar previous defeats of mine took over
She briefly examined the manual and then the batteries that powered the igniter
discovered that one of them had been inserted backward and remedied the mistake
Here’s the thing: I’d already checked the batteries to make sure they were properly installed
How could I have gotten it wrong and turned triumph into humiliation
The only possible explanation is that I suffer from some undiagnosed disability — one that might have been described as stupidity in any earlier age but I prefer to blame on shoddy genetic wiring
I’d escorted that same daughter and her identical twin girls (aka my grandchildren) to a Central Park playground last week and watched as they enviously followed around another toddler who was pushing a toy lawn mower that emitted soap bubbles
The toy brought back my own childhood and one of its more disastrous moments
my parents bought me a gleaming metal toy lawn mower that actually cut grass
my babysitter forced to me share it with the kid next door
Echoes of my sobs and cascading tears resound through the ages
the sense of pride and agency a toy with adult pretensions can bring a small child
So I bought John Deere’s yellow and green “bubble ‘n’ go mower,” the same one my grandchildren had coveted in Central Park
to surprise granddaughters Aggie and Faye on their next visit
As soon as I picked up the box at the post office
I was doing fairly well at first: securing the cap onto the bubble reservoir
sliding the handle sections into place until they locked and then connecting them to the body of the lawnmower
and finally pouring the included bubble solution into the well without spilling any
Everything seemed in order until I realized that I’d slid the handle section
but so what) as well as a yellow lever (which also did nothing but nonetheless looked professional) were facing away from the child
I thought back to one of my favorite toys growing up
It wasn’t my fifth birthday lawnmower; I associated that with misery
I was thinking of my hyper-realistic 1960s toy playmobile dashboard replete with speedometer
Imagine if all that fabulousness had been facing the wrong direction
I looked underneath the machine — which boasted its ability to make mechanical gear sounds while requiring no batteries — but nothing doing there either
The only thing I succeeded at was spilling some of the bubble solution
which the directions explicitly warned against
I don’t know what the big deal is about spilling a little soap — perhaps it would cause some hapless kid (unlike my precocious progeny) to slip
crack a rib or his fracture his skull and invite lawsuits against John Deere
I tried to comfort myself that two-year-olds would probably be so mesmerized by the bubbles and the gear sounds that they wouldn’t notice my mistake
it’s one of those toys that you could easily imagine in a matter of months sitting at the foot of the driveway under a “free” sign
it appeared that I’d inserted the handles the only way the slots allowed
So I took another look at the box the mower arrived in
specifically the photograph of a happy kid pushing the mower amid a floating universe of shimmering bubbles
I’d had it right all along: The controls were facing the way the manufacturer had intended
How can you play-mow a lawn when you can’t see the dials
Wasn’t the designer of this contraption once a kid him- or herself
I couldn’t add this to my growing list of failures
having bought only one bubble ‘n’ go mower
I won’t spark sibling rivalry that will end in fury and tears — just as my formative toy lawn mower experience did all those decades ago

Ice Spice confirmed her relationship with NFL player Sauce Gardner in an April 30 mirror selfie after months of relationship speculation
Ice Spice is giving fans a taste of her new relationship
While giving a glimpse into her life lately, the "Barbie World" rapper subtly made her budding romance with New York Jets cornerback Sauce Garder Instagram official
amid solo shots of herself and a video playing in the snow while wearing a bikini
she shared a mirror selfie with the NFL player
The post comes months after relationship rumors began swirling
Initial suspicions arose in September when the rapper attended a Jets game
followed by several low key outings together
including at the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscars Party

At the 2025 game—in which the Chiefs fell to the Eagles—the "In Ha Mood" rapper was seen sitting next to Taylor when the "Cruel Summer" singer appeared on the jumbotron to boos from the crowd
It all came down to the Grammy winner reaching out in hopes of a collaboration on the “Karma” remix
“I remember my manager called me, and he usually texts, but he called, and he’s like, ‘You ready for this one?’ And I’m thinking it’s going to be some bad news or something,” Ice recalled to Rolling Stone in July 2024
‘Taylor Swift has a record for you to get on from her album.’ I’m playing it cool on the phone
Super cool.’ And then I hang up the phone and I’m hysterically crying.”
Little did she know it would lead to Taylor becoming who she would go on to call her “closest celebrity friend.”
I think our personalities mesh really well.”
