The sheriff's office said 36-year-old Joshua McCarthy of Gardnerville was reportedly involved in a physical confrontation with the homeowner while attempting to break in
Several witnesses told responding deputies that McCarthy had been in a fight with another person at a different home prior to the shooting
They also said McCarthy had been drinking heavy amounts of alcohol
The sheriff's office said this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with any information related to this incident is asked to contact Investigator Scott Battcher at 775-782-9905
One person is dead following a shooting Saturday night in the Gardnerville Ranchos area
All people involved were detained and an investigation is on-going
The call for the shooting in the 1400 block of Bumblebee Drive came in at 9:31 p.m
Deputies arrived on the scene to find one person
Sheriff Dan Coverley told Citywide Video News there were several bystanders
“We still don’t know what caused this or why this happened,” Coverley said
It's unclear why two separate women in the Gardnerville Ranchos area were murdered in the last four days
but Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley says enough similarities exist that they believe the two killings are connected.
"Rest assured that the sheriff's office is doing everything we can to find who committed these crimes and bring them to justice," Coverley said during a Monday morning press conference.
The sheriff's office says Connie Koontz
was murdered inside her home on James Road in Gardnerville Ranchos on Jan
who was killed in her Dresslerville Road home roughly four days later on Sunday
The two murders happened just one or two miles apart and the sheriff's office has no suspect identified
who is disabled but lived with her daughter
And Renken was found by a friend after the 74-year-old didn't show up to a prearranged activity planned for the next morning.
Due to similarities in how the suspect entered the home
the age and sex of the two victims, that it appeared they both lived alone and that they both lived in the same general area
investigators believe there is a "strong possibility the same suspect committed both crimes," Coverley said.
Coverley would not comment on the manner in which Koontz and Renken were killed
but he said it did not appear that the suspect forced entry into the homes.
There is also no indication of a motive or if there is more than one person involved in the killings.
"That's one of the things that's the scariest," Coverley said. "There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason why this is occurring."
It's unclear if the victims were chosen or targeted
but Coverley said it remains a possibility — particularly since the victims were both women and appeared to live alone.
Coverley said that while the murders are similar and thought to be connected
it is "premature and not-wise" to coin the killings as the work of a serial killer.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has asked for assistance from the FBI in processing forensic evidence from the scenes.
The FBI's behavioral analysis unit in Quantico
Virginia has also been asked to build a psychological profile of a suspect that could have committed the murders.
A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the capture and prosecution of a person involved with the murders.
Patrols have been increased throughout the county but an emphasis has been placed on the Gardnerville Ranchos area
Coverley pleaded at the press conference for residents in the area to lock their doors 24/7 and not open the door for anyone they do not know or expect.
He said people should check on their neighbors who they know live alone.
"I would encourage all residents to be vigilant (and) pay attention to what's going on," he said. "You know who should and should not be in your neighborhood."
"If you see anything that is suspicious or sticks out or doesn't fit
For the second time in less than a week the Douglas County Sheriff's Office is urging residents to lock their doors and windows after a person was murdered in the Gardnerville Ranchos area.
The killing marks the second homicide in Gardnerville Ranchos in the last four or five days
and the sheriff's office believes the two murders might be connected
Douglas County Deputies responded to 943 Dresslerville Road at approximately 1:20 p.m
January 13 on a report of a deceased person
The ensuing investigation revealed the death was the result of a homicide.
"Initial observations" from that investigation revealed that the Jan. 13 killing may be related to another murder of Gardnerville resident Connie Koontz
authorities believe an unknown suspect entered Koontz's James Road home and killed her before fleeing the scene.
The sheriff's office has said little about the circumstances of either homicide
or what leads them to believe the two incidents are related.
The sheriff's office says it has a "heightened sense of concern" for the community and has increased patrol activities throughout the county
with emphasis on the Gardnerville Ranchos.
Residents are urged to lock their doors and windows
leave an outside light illuminated at night and ensure all home security systems are functional
All suspicious activity should be immediately reported to the sheriff's office.
