Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet got his first assist of the season against the Minnesota Twins
With nobody out in the top of the fourth inning Sunday
Crochet faced Twins shortstop Carlos Correa
Correa hit a comebacker straight toward Crochet
Second baseman Kristian Campbell picked up the ball and threw Correa out
The thoroughly strange play was scored 1-4-3
with Crochet getting credit for an assist because he touched the ball—albeit nasally
and he was checked by the trainer before play resumed

A close-up of the play revealed how close Crochet was to a possible serious injury
Garrett Crochet must have had the biggest sneeze of his life after this pic.twitter.com/7lwXNk0msP
Crochet's eight assists last season with the Chicago White Sox were a career high
but it's a near certainty that none of them were quite as painful as this one

And he managed five innings of 1-run ball despite a scary line drive that deflected off his cheek and nose during inning number four
manager Alex Cora provided a brief but positive injury update on the key rotational arm
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Garrett Crochet pitched against the Minnesota Twins at Fenway Park on May 4
"Yeah, the ball hit [Crochet]. The ball hit him in the nose," Cora first confirmed during the postgame press conference (video via WEEI's Tom Carroll)
He also revealed that Crochet's nose is not broken
obviously grinded through the last [inning]," the Red Sox manager added
it just made sense [to take him out after five]
so we moved on to the next level and [we] just weren't able to finish it."
A reporter went on to question Cora on Crochet's performance as a whole
specifically asking about his "command" and overall efficiency
After admitting that Crochet's 2 walks "put him in a bad spot," Cora said that the Red Sox starter "didn't realize" his pitch count was so high
and then he had to work hard to get the outs in the fifth," the manager concluded.
Cora was not concerned with Crochet's velocity being a "tick" lower on Sunday
Crochet allowed 4 hits and 1 earned run (a first-inning home run) versus the Twins

Former Tennessee pitcher Garrett Crochet brushed off a batted ball to the face while on the mound on Sunday afternoon
but Crochet still remained on the mound while others may have checked out to the dugout
The incident came on a 2-1 pitch in the top of the fourth inning with the Red Sox leading the Twins 3-1
Crochet delivered a sinker with empty bases
which was shot back up the middle by Minnesota shortstop Carlos Correa
The ball made contact with Crochet’s nose as his head was turning
who made the play from the shortstop side of the second base bag
pitched a no-hit inning in the fifth with two walks
Crochet ended his day of work with four hits and one earned run in five innings on the mound
but the Twins were able to find four runs late in the game to take the 5-4 victory
In his first season with the Red Sox here in 2025
Crochet is posting a career-best 2.02 ERA through eight starts
The former Vol is also tallying a 2.8 K/BB ratio and has only allowed 11 earned runs in 49 innings of work
Crochet played his first four seasons with the Chicago White Sox before signing with the Red Sox last offseason
The Mississippi native was drafted out of the University of Tennessee with the 11th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft

Kawasaki’s Garrett Gerloff is sure he’s making progress
but that it’s not yet showing in the results
Garrett Gerloff, 2025 Italian WorldSBK, grid. Credit: Gold and Goose. © Gold & Goose The Italian WorldSBK was a strong event for Garrett Gerloff in 2024
but having switched to Kawasaki over the winter the American found dramatically different results
Gerloff was in the top-10 in all three races at Cremona in 2024 on the Bonovo BMW
But this year’s event saw him go 15-15-12 across the three races
taking only five points away from the weekend
was not much slower than the time that saw him finish fourth in Race 2 last year: a 34:42.419 this year versus a 34:41.715 last September
It’s a 0.7-second regression on the stopwatch and a drop of eight places on the results sheet for Gerloff
but the American nonetheless was positive about his Sunday in Cremona
“It was a really good final day at Cremona in the end,” Gerloff said
“We are still far back from where we would like to be
we are racing with other guys and making passes
I am there more than in the last couple of races
but it is not showing 100 per cent in the results yet – but we are making progress
“I am happy today and thanks to the team for all the hard work
Gerloff now sits 17th in the World Superbike riders’ standings, his 12th place in Race 2 matching his best result of 2025, achieved in both long races at Portimao.

the Boston Red Sox have played the same kind of game nearly on repeat
Garrett Crochet didn’t have his best stuff and had to shake off a scary moment when he was struck in the face by a Carlos Correa comebacker
but the left-hander still gave the Red Sox a chance to win
the offense failed to add onto an early lead
and relievers Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten faltered for the third time this past week
as the Minnesota Twins beat the Red Sox 5-4 to win the series
the Red Sox dropped back-to-back games with Slaten taking the losses in games the team had a late lead
The Red Sox are tied with the Phillies with eight blown saves
Whitlock took over in the sixth with a 3-1 lead after Crochet had allowed one run on four hits and two walks over five innings while striking out six
issuing a leadoff walk to Harrison Bader and a one-out single to Christian Vázquez before allowing a two-out
two-run single from Ryan Jeffers to tie the score
Jeffers had been hitting .400 with two out and runners in scoring position entering the at-bat
recorded two outs and then allowed a Bader double to score the go-ahead run
“It’s three games in a row now where again
I felt like I’ve had really good stuff,” Slaten said
but it’s not happening in the two-strike counts and that’s what matters most
and that’s the most frustrating part about it is that I feel like I’m shooting myself in the foot when I get to those positions and not executing.”
There was one bullpen bright spot this week
as the Red Sox could pull no closer than 5-4 against the Twins bullpen
A struggling bullpen hasn’t been Boston’s only issue in this recent slide that has seen the team lose four of its last five and seven of its last 11 games
An inconsistent offense has also played a major role
The Red Sox have shown an ability to break out offensively
but have been far too streaky and have bunched their runs early in games
the Red Sox have scored 89 runs in the first four innings while just 75 in innings four through eight
they’ve failed to keep adding throughout the game
Wilyer Abreu reached on a single that he dropped into left field in front of Larnach
and then David Hamilton hit a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position
Carlos Narváez bounced a single over the third baseman into left
The rally was the product of excellent situational hitting
The Red Sox cashed in another scoring opportunity in the third when Gonzalez added a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1
aside from an Abreu solo homer in the eighth
Jarren Duran and Rafael Devers went down in order on seven total pitches
and the Twins took the lead off Slaten in the top of the eighth
Cora didn’t have much of an explanation for the inconsistency of his team’s offense
“(Minnesota’s) bullpen is really good and after the fifth inning
they could bring in their guys,” Cora said
that’s the most important thing,” he added
the lack of consistent offense has become a worrisome trend
moving Kristian Campbell into the cleanup spot
who won American League Rookie of the Month for April
missed the last three games with right rib discomfort
Campbell entered the day hitting .301 with a .902 OPS in 29 games along with 11 multi-hit games
With Trevor Story struggling at the plate and Triston Casas out for the year
Cora hinted Campbell might remain in the four-hole
“Just trying something different,” he said before the game
“Putting all those bats together I think is going to help
I’m not saying this is the route we will go
Casas started the year as the cleanup hitter
hitting in that spot for 12 games before Cora turned to Story (nine games) and Abreu (11 games)
Story got a day off Sunday and has been in a rough stretch at the plate
going 6-for-46 with three walks and 16 strikeouts over his last 11 games
Abreu had been struggling entering Sunday after a white-hot first week of the season
he’d hit just .219 with a .716 OPS over the past month
but did he put up a 3-for-4 day Sunday with two singles and a homer
The Red Sox have had plenty of strong individual performances at the plate
but far too few days where they’ve collectively clicked and added on throughout the game
Even before Correa’s comebacker to the mound
The lefty allowed a solo homer on the first pitch of the game to Byron Buxton to put the team in an early hole
but his command was off and his velocity was down
with his four-seamer averaging just 95.7 mph

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) May 4, 2025
he narrowly avoided a major injury as a 93.7 mph comebacker from Correa glanced off his nose
Cora and trainers came out to the mound to make sure Crochet’s nose wasn’t broken before he took a few warmup pitches and stayed in the game
just more shaken up with the initial impact than anything,” he said
“I immediately touched my nose to see if it felt normal
he uses his four-seamer about 45 percent of the time each start
but only threw it at an 18 percent clip Sunday
kind of seeing what (the Twins) were trying to do to me in the first inning
getting swings off on the four-seamer early,” he said
While it’s not yet a concern given the early-season weather
it’s been noticeable and something Crochet agreed he’s trying to figure out
Asked what’s felt different since spring training
“Just the way that I’m working down the slope
I feel like there are times where I’m kind of just letting my body weight take me down the slope instead of driving down the mountain right now,” he said
“It’s like I’m able to recognize these things during the start
but I’m not going to try and correct anything during a start on the field
I’m doing what I can with what I have that day.”
The 25-year-old still boasts a 2.02 ERA through eight starts
but clearly feels he hasn’t pitched his best thus far
Starter Walker Buehler landed on the injured list Friday with right shoulder bursitis
but he was relieved the injury wasn’t more severe
Buehler said he had an anti-inflammatory shot Friday and expects to begin throwing again Monday or Tuesday
“I’m a guy that has pitched through a lot of things and so the fact that it was just bursitis and I had to go on the IL is kind of embarrassing for me in some ways,” he said
“But I think there’s certain things you have to check off during the week to be able to throw in a major-league game
Buehler started to feel some shoulder discomfort two weeks ago in Tampa and tried to pitch through it
but given he’d had a tear in his shoulder a few years back
he wanted to ensure it was nothing more serious
“The results of my MRI and the kind of quality of my shoulder is still really good,” he said
“I was just concerned that it was something more than it was
who’s been out with a pectoral strain since April 13
and Cora has been pleased with how aggressive he’s been as he’s tried to return to the mound quickly after what the team initially feared would be a much worse injury
“The progress has been outstanding,” Cora said
“He’s done a good job of attacking the rehab
He was here and did a good job with the trainers and doing the same thing with his rehab.”

Casas had surgery to repair the tendon Sunday at Massachusetts General Hospital
He is expected to miss the rest of the season

Twins find elusive big swings they needMay 4th
BOSTON -- Second in strikeouts (50) in the American League coming into Sunday afternoon
A 2.05 ERA and a .179 opponents’ batting average
The Twins had their work cut out for them facing Red Sox lefty Garrett Crochet in the series finale at Fenway Park
“I want to go out there and have very tough at-bats against Crochet
try to avoid that slider that he’ll throw down and out of the zone,” manager Rocco Baldelli said ahead of the rubber match
Beyond the walls of the manager’s office in the visitors’ clubhouse
Buxton sent Crochet’s first pitch into the first row of the Green Monster Seats
Crochet held the Twins to the one run, but Minnesota put the pressure on Boston’s ace and forced the Red Sox to turn to their bullpen after five innings in an eventual 5-4 win to take the series
just how hard fought they were,” Carlos Correa said
and we were able to turn it up at the end enough to go out and get those Ws
Step one was getting Crochet out of the game
Part of the game plan was to take away Crochet’s fastball early and force the lefty to turn to his changeup
Buxton did his part by firing a 93.5 mph fastball out of the park to open the game
and the Twins held steady in putting the pressure on Crochet to adjust
Reliever turned starter turned long reliever Garrett Whitlock entered for Crochet and pitched a 1-2-3 sixth
but the Twins tagged the right-hander for two runs in the seventh to tie the game at 3
Baldelli spoke earlier in the series about the Twins repeatedly being just a swing away in some of their recent losses
provided the game-tying swing with a single to left field
And Harrison Bader had the game-winning swing on a 2-2 fastball from righty Justin Slaten for a two-out double in the eighth to drive in Correa
Bader has been “as advertised” on defense since joining the Twins in February as a plus-defensive outfielder who offers depth behind Buxton
He’s delivered with explosive defense and bringing the energy
and now he’s giving Minnesota a leg up on offense
Bader's go-ahead hit on Sunday extended his hitting streak to eight games
over which he’s hit .429 with six runs scored
“When you have him hitting toward the bottom of the order being really productive regularly
he’s hit a few homers and extra-base hits,” Baldelli said
the competitiveness of his at-bats on a pitch-by-pitch basis has stood out in a really positive way
Bader’s approach is representative of the Twins’ offense as a whole
the at-bats have been competitive and indicate that more of those elusive swings Baldelli spoke of could be just around the corner
Sign up to receive our daily Morning Lineup to stay in the know about the latest trending topics around Major League Baseball
I think those are things to be very pleased about,” Baldelli said
“Our pitching did a really nice job overall on the trip
I have to be really happy with what we saw
Our starters gave us great opportunities to win all week long
I think there is a lot of good that is going to come out of this trip.”

BOSTON -- Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet had a close call Sunday when a liner skipped off his glove and nose on its way to second base for a ground out
Manager Alex Cora rushed to the mound with a team trainer after the left-hander narrowly missed a direct hit off the bat of Minnesota shortstop Carlos Correa in the fourth inning of the Twins' 5-4 victory
The ball skimmed off Crochet's glove as he turned his head before it hit his nose and continued its path
Cora and the trainer asked for a towel and Crochet appeared to possibly have a small trickle of blood coming out as his blew his nose
Just more shooken up at the initial impact than anything."
He stayed in and struck out the next batter, Jonah Bride, with a sweeper. He then gave up Brooks Lee's single to center before Harrison Bader bounced to short
"I immediately go touch my nose just to see if it felt normal," Crochet said
throwing 89 pitches and giving up a run on four hits with six strikeouts
obviously grinded through the last (inning)," Cora said when asked about the shorter outing
The bigger concern may be his velocity on his fastball
which was down a couple mph most of the start
"I'm not sure to be honest," Crochet said of the lower velocity
trying to just clean up command as a whole
That's just kind of what I'm chalking it up to."
The Red Sox picked up the lefty in a trade with the White Sox during the offseason and signed him to a six-year

UPDATE: Hamilton County Sheriff Austin Garrett says April 14th's cyber attack incident cost $48,000 to pay an outside security firm
Garrett adds that the cyberattackers originally demanded $300,000
“As I stated in my last update issued on April 29th
all public accessible programs have been restored and as of May 1
the remaining internal software systems we utilize to connect with local and state law enforcement and government agencies have also been fully restored
In order to bring these systems back online
several internal benchmarks had to be made before those connections could occur
Since this incident initially occurred on April 14th
our Information Technology staff have worked tirelessly and diligently around the clock to bring our network systems back online
We are fortunate to have such a talented IT team comprised of thirteen full and part-time employees whose quick response and collaboration with our Cyber Security firm helped to mitigate and ultimately recover from this entire incident
Just like we have deputies assigned to specialized teams who respond to critical incidents
This incident placed our agency in a crisis and our team’s quick response and expertise proved vital to our recovery
I couldn’t be more proud of them and the talent that we have working in Information Technology Services
“The HCSO IT team worked tirelessly to identify the threat
and further enhance our protective measures
Their processes pre-event ensured our software was operating as designed and ensured backups were functioning as designed allowing the HCSO to essentially "pick up" where we left off on April 13th.”
I remain committed to the transparency of this office and its service to you
to know the costs associated with this incident
While there is no way to quantify the loss of productivity this caused our agency or the inconvenience it may have caused you
I can tell you the demand from the threat actors was $300,000
While we certainly did not entertain paying this
there was an expense of $48,000 incurred for Vendetta
It is a privilege and honor to serve you as your sheriff and I appreciate the public’s patience and support always."
PREVIOUS STORY: Hamilton County Sheriff Austin Garrett says the office's public programs are finally operational again following April 14th's cyber attack incident
the HCSO has been working methodically and diligently alongside an external cyber defense firm to preserve and examine this cyber-ransomware event and systematically restore service to all internal and external systems
all public accessible programs are operational and our Information Technology personnel are working to restore the remaining few internal software systems which are expected to be operational later this week
and I will be providing further information and additional details about this event later this week.”

Who was going to be the caddie for J.T. Realmuto? Maybe that’s an unfair analogy, but it works just the same. With as much as the team likes to put Realmuto into the lineup, being the Phillies’ backup catcher meant not doing a whole lot of actual playing during the week
Just provide something in the realm of acceptable offense
have the pitchers have enough trust in you that they want you behind the plate
maybe throw out a few runners here and there
That’s kind of the bare minimum of on field production the team needs from the backup catcher’s spot on the roster
Rafael Marchan has been just fine with behind the plate. I wrote a bit ago about how the team does have two good defensive catchers right now
something really only one other team in the game can lay claim to
Since that’s really the barest of bare minimums for a backup catcher
he’s making us pine for the days of Todd Pratt
The numbers that Marchan is posting are very hard to accumulate. Yes, we know he doesn’t have the plate appearances to make any official determinations about his prowess at the plate, but from what we have gleaned
These are the kinds of numbers that we would expect from a shortstop hitting ninth on a National League team in 1974
They are numbers that make us pine for the next option
as miniscule as the impact on the major league roster may be
Stubbs was the quintessential backup catcher who simply stopped hitting
Maybe the biggest reason he was beat out by Marchan was that the latter had no more minor league options remaining and the team needed the depth that came with stashing Stubbs in Lehigh Valley
posting a line of .283/.411/.417 with two home runs and twelve RBI
Does that mean the team is likely to make a change
bringing Stubbs back into the major league fold and wishing Marchan well while they kick him out of the door
We can probably all agree that all the hand wringing over the Stubbs vs
Marchan battle this spring was all quite silly
Unless he comes out like gangbusters and plays exceedingly well
the backup catcher’s importance is likely not as great as many believe on the Phillies
What did matter was that the team doesn’t have the greatest of catching depth and not sending down the catcher who had the option remaining while keeping the one who didn’t would have been roster negligence
Continuing to retain that depth is still the best course as far as roster construction goes
so that’s likely how the team moves forward
maybe it forces the team’s hand into making a decision
attaining catcher depth can be as simple as making a minor league signing should Stubbs move into a major league role
Marchan is going to have to prove something at some point
He’s sure not proving that he’s an option to begin next season as the starter for the Phillies
it’s alright to miss Stubbs being on the roster
Maybe the Phillies would be better off with him there
Maybe they would look like they were having fun again as opposed to the dourness that seems to waft through the team at times
Just don’t plan on anything happening any time soon

Season 3 of HBO’s “100 Foot Wave” premieres on May 1
The third season of HBO’s Emmy winning 100 Foot Wave is set to be released on May 1
and if the previous seasons are any measure
The show focuses heavily on Garrett McNamara
as well as a cadre of other big wave surfers as they hunt behemoth swells
But it’s not just a story about riding big waves
It’s not even about actually surfing a 100-foot wave
It’s a story about the seasons of life
A story about people who are tuned to a different frequency than most
the spine of the show is the chase for that elusive measure
I was lucky enough to spend a couple days at the McNamara house a few years ago
most down-to-Earth people I’ve ever met
Their life at home in Hawaii is a quiet one
Chickens ran amok while their son Barrel chased them barefoot through the grass
Despite his standing in the big wave world
Garrett is exceedingly humble — confident in his abilities
but still with his feet firmly planted on the ground
vibrating with excitement about anything and everything
He has committed his life to surfing the biggest waves on Earth
is strikingly different to what he does when he steps into the ocean
“With Garrett?” Nicole laughed when I asked if she ever worries about her husband’s chosen profession
“I think I’m actually more comfortable with him being out there than being on land
I worry about him a lot more just going to the grocery store.”
I’ve met many big wave surfers over the course of my strange little career
but none have embodied a sheer love for riding large waves like Garrett does
100 Foot Wave could only have been made with him at the forefront
I hopped on a call with him while he was in New York to chat about the show and how it has changed his life
100 Foot Wave has shifted focus through the seasons
and the upcoming one is very different from the previous iterations
“The first season was just us; the discovery and the exploration and the pioneering of Nazaré,” Garrett said
“It was 10 years of archival footage
and I didn’t think there was any way to top that
It’s like finding Mount Everest in the ocean
I felt like season two was just as good as season one
It was actually boots on the ground filming and bringing in more characters
How are they even going to keep this going?’ And somehow
He attributes the show’s greatness not only to the fact that it follows his life
“I don’t want to watch myself on TV,” he laughed
“They just edit so well that it’s actually super interesting for me to even watch
I am so in awe and so honored and proud and privileged to have this team.”
Creating a show around chasing enormous waves is, clearly, not without its dangers. The cast and crew put themselves in life-threatening situations, and McNamara is keenly aware of that. Much like a surfer-tow partner relationship
it all comes down to a deep-seated trust in the people he works with
Most of the crew are incredibly talented in the water in their own right
or rescuing anyone who might need rescuing
they know they can handle it,” he explained
because they know firsthand how how bad it can get
Making a show like 100 Foot Wave not only requires putting lives at risk, but finding the waves to do it on. The third season, unlike the previous two, moves away from Portugal and Nazaré and spends some time at Cortes Bank, a place with some difficult memories for Garrett. Safi in Morocco
and Waimea Bay in Hawaii are also included
McNamara has let go of some of his influence on where the show goes
“In the beginning we were 100 percent involved,” he told me
and the crew does what they feel from there
It’s just like a well-oiled machine running on reality of what’s actually happening without faking anything
As with any show that documents people in real time
Garrett has established himself as one of the most dominant pioneers in all of big wave surfing
When I asked him whether he was taking a conscious step back and focusing more on the mentorship side of the sport
“It’s just a natural progression,” he said after a moment
“I’ve always loved helping people accomplish their goals and dreams
It’s been kind of an ongoing thing for me
and I love all the people who accomplish different things
I love doing something that is good for the sport
I love doing something that will grow the sport and get more people interested in surfing as a whole
The story arc of 100 Foot Wave began well before the show was being made. It began when Garrett got a call from a friend in Portugal who worked for Nazaré City Hall’s sports program. That friend knew that the wave there was something special
and thought that it might help attract tourists to the tiny
beautiful fishing town that was struggling under the weight of the commercial fishing industry

ST. LOUIS -- The Milwaukee Brewers placed center fielder Garrett Mitchell on the 10-day injured list Saturday
Mitchell was diagnosed with a left oblique strain
Mitchell started in right field Friday night. He left the game, a 3-2 Milwaukee loss to St. Louis, after the fourth inning. After the game, Mitchell said he hurt it on one of his swings in his lone at-bat in the second inning when he grounded out to shortstop Masyn Winn
The Brewers have selected the contract of left fielder Daz Cameron from Triple-A Nashville
Cameron, 28, was acquired by the Brewers from Baltimore on April 7
The Brewers also transferred center fielder Blake Perkins from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injury list
Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Baton Rouge
When LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier steps onto the field, he brings more than just talent — he brings leadership, focus and faith. As the Tigers’ quarterback, Nussmeier has learned how to stay calm under pressure, make precise decisions and lead by example. Those same traits — precision, performance and reliability — are exactly why Mercedes-Benz of Baton Rouge is proud to partner with him
staying focused under pressure comes down to my faith in God and trust in my preparation,” Nussmeier says
do the work and let Him take care of the rest.”
That mindset has shaped Garrett into the leader he is today
he’s learned from every team dynamic — good and bad — and developed a leadership style centered on connection and accountability
“Being a quarterback means you represent something bigger than yourself,” he says
“It’s about building real relationships with your teammates and leading in a way that earns their trust.”
It’s that same commitment to trust and excellence that drew Nussmeier to Mercedes-Benz of Baton Rouge
Although he admits he’s always been more of a truck guy
driving his own Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S has been a game changer
“I don’t know if I want to go back,” he laughs
and the all-black look — it’s just stealthy
And while the AMG’s performance stands out
it’s the dealership’s service that sealed the deal
“The team at Mercedes-Benz of Baton Rouge has been incredible
I’d love to keep this relationship going throughout my career.”
Nussmeier understands the value of precision and responsiveness—both key elements in Mercedes-Benz engineering
It’s the same behind the wheel,” he explains
“I feel safe in my Mercedes because I know it can handle anything
The performance and control — it gives you confidence.”
Despite his rising success and spotlight moments
He’s driven by a lifelong dream to play football at the highest level and by the opportunity to inspire others
whether through faith or work ethic — that’s been one of the proudest things for me,” he says
The team at Mercedes-Benz of Baton Rouge believes excellence goes beyond the product — it’s about purpose
That’s why Garrett Nussmeier is the perfect partner
He’s more than an athlete — he’s a role model with the drive to lead on and off the field
“God is good.” And when purpose meets performance
the road ahead looks promising — for him and for the Mercedes-Benz family

While Gardner and Wilson are also eligible for long-term contract extensions
Mougey said prior to last weekend's draft that those discussions are an ongoing process
"In terms of contracts and extensions on any players
and we'll keep those dealings in those discussions in-house," he said
Gardner would receive a guaranteed base salary of $20.1 million in 2026
Gardner quickly flashed as one of the NFL's top cornerbacks
He was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2022 and was selected as a first-team All-Pro in each of his first two seasons
He's recorded 40 PDs and 181 tackles in 48 career games
he has the ability to deny the ball," said HC Aaron Glenn of Gardner at the NFL Annual League Meeting in Palm Beach
And to me at the end of the day as a corner that's what you want to be
Gardner will pair with free agent signee Brandon Stephens (6-1, 215) on the outside next season. The Jets also drafted Florida State CB Azareye'h Thomas in the third round.
Wilson, a star at Ohio State, was the Jets' leader in receptions and receiving yards in the past three years while playing with several different quarterbacks. He was named Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2022, and contributed a career-high 101 receptions, 1,104 receiving yards, and 7 touchdowns in the 2024 season. Next season, Wilson will catch balls from his former college QB at Ohio State – Justin Fields.
"Just get back on the same page as we were in college and of course communicate, make sure we are always on the same page when it comes to concepts and routes and what he's doing in certain situations," Fields said of reuniting with Wilson. "But yeah, I'm definitely excited to be back on the field with him for sure".
In a draft day trade with Tennessee, the Jets moved back into the first round to select Johnson out of Florida State. He came into his own in the 2023 season when he logged 7.5 sacks and was named as a Pro Bowl alternate. His 2024 season was cut short when he sustained a torn Achilles tendon in Week 2 game against the Titans.
"Jermaine's been doing a really good job," Glenn said of Johnson the NFL Meeting. "I've known him since he came out of college. We actually coached him in the Senior Bowl. I know exactly what he brings to the table. He is working his (butt) off to get to where he needs to be, and that player has a lot of confidence in who he is. We have a lot of confidence in him, so we're looking forward to him getting back on the field."

Hear from the 2025 Jets Draft Class Members in Their Own Words
After blowing a 3-1 lead to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday and losing another series
the team dropped to .500 on the season again at 18-18
especially after one of the team's most trusted relievers
blew a save for his second straight outing
And it's time for manager Alex Cora to make adjustments
specifically with being deadset on letting Whitlock go two innings in his appearances
Another day, another one-run loss for the Boston Red Sox
Admittedly, the bullpen as a whole continues to look like an issue, one where Craig Breslow and the Red Sox's decision to not add another piece is already starting to bite them
Whitlock came into the season and was seemingly immediately locked into a multi-inning role
Only four of his 12 appearances this season have been less than two innings
Sunday's loss was indicative of the problem
After a stellar first inning on the mound in relief of Garrett Crochet
Whitlock went back out for the seventh inning
he didn't get three as Ryan Jeffers socked a game-tying two-RBI single
his blown save against Toronto earlier in the week actually came in his first inning of work
with the usage he's been getting in this role
perhaps it's just another sign of what Cora needs to realize: This isn't the right usage of Whitlock
Misusing Whitlock isn't anything new for the Red Sox
They previously tried to stretch him into a starter
which derailed a good bit of his development due to persistent injuries
Now that they've settled him back into the bullpen
they need to just figure out where he's most comfortable and utilize a talented pitcher in that role
The signs are there that this isn't where he's most comfortable
getting his ERA as low as 1.72 before his last two outings
there were early signs as well that this might not be his best role
After a pair of two-inning appearances to start the year in March
he gave up three earned runs in his next four innings of work
That didn't bite the Red Sox then as they still went on to win
it's becoming abundantly clear that this isn't the role he's most comfortable in
have gotten too good of starting pitching over the past week plus to be a .500 baseball team
The bullpen management has been an infuriating factor in their shortcomings
It's clear that Cora only truly trusts about 3.5 of his relievers: Whitlock
Justin Slaten (who's slumping in his own right) and Aroldis Chapman
this is a team that trusted Sean Newcomb to take starts — so why not trust giving him a multi-inning role
or even the sixth inning to set up Whitlock
There's also the baffling choice to option Luis Guerrero back to Triple-A despite him pitching four scoreless innings and giving up only one hit over that span (and not giving up a run late last season when he was called up)
He could be another option that seems quite trustworthy
Whitlock in this multi-inning role clearly doesn't suit him
There are still 126 games left in the season and the Red Sox are somehow still only two games behind the AL East-leading Yankees
these late-game mismanagements and collapses can't keep happening
the most obvious tweak to make is to shift things around and get Whitlock out of his current role
that feels best for the Red Sox and the player alike

Reed Garrett's mental game just as key as his right armApril 29th
WASHINGTON -- Sometimes overlooked in baseball is the mental aspect of the game
and it’s easy for players to blame themselves when the result doesn’t go their team’s way -- particularly when a player is less practiced with regard to mental fortitude
will say they try to treat every situation they’re thrown into as the same
whether there are two outs and no baserunners or no outs and runners in scoring position
So it’s refreshing to hear Reed Garrett discuss his approach to pitching out of the bullpen
it comes down to one thing: "Attacking the strike zone with all four of my pitches and challenging them and making them beat me -- not beating myself.”
In his third year with the Mets since being claimed off waivers from Baltimore in June 2023
Garrett has carved out a nice role for himself as he pitched his way into high-leverage situations
when Garrett pitched to a 3.77 ERA with 14 holds and four saves
he turned into one of New York’s go-to bullpen arms with runners on base and one of the club's most reliable arms in general
when Garrett made only four appearances before hitting the IL with right elbow inflammation
Garrett’s consistency on the mound is a credit to his mental work and his positive self-talk
At various parts of his routine -- as he walks to the bullpen
as he prepares to warm up and even as he gets ready to take the mound
“One of the biggest things that I've learned,” Garrett explained
pretend that you're not nervous or have a little bit of anxiety
or -- everybody has a little bit of doubt -- if you acknowledge it and say
I am going to execute and I'm going to succeed.’
of not letting the external factors creep in and overtake my sense of self confidence and my sense of knowing that I'm going to execute.”
Garrett developed that self-talk when he was pitching in Japan in 2020 and 2021
who was the mental strength coordinator with the Rangers when Garrett was first coming up in pro ball
and began the process of relearning those mental skills
“It's something that I had to learn and grow through as a player and as a person,” Garrett said
“And I think that has helped me not only in baseball
That mentality is certainly paying off tenfold for Garrett in his professional life
he was the lone reliever in MLB to inherit at least nine baserunners and not allow any to score this season
He also hasn’t allowed an earned run in any of his 13 outings this season
Garrett hasn’t allowed an earned run in 26 of his past 27 games dating to Aug
a stretch during which he has a 1.50 ERA (four earned runs over 24 innings) with eight walks and 27 strikeouts
And it’s that mental aspect -- along with his skill on the mound
of course -- that makes Garrett such a talented reliever
one who the Mets trust in the most crucial of situations
"He's a huge part of that bullpen,” said manager Carlos Mendoza on Saturday
especially coming in with traffic -- and his ability to execute pitches
his ability to have the awareness of the situation and slow the game down -- he's been huge.”

The Ringer's draft expert projected the New York Jets to select LSU's Garrett Nussmeier with the No. 1 overall pick. Manning was conspicuous by his absence in the first round altogether.
McShay classified both he and UCLA transfer Nico Iamaleava as 2027 draft prospects.
McShay had three other QBs come off the board in the top 10: South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers
Clemson's Cade Klubnik and Penn State's Drew Allar
Manning may not be a surefire first-round prospect in the 2026 class
he has never been a full-time starter in college
When Quinn Ewers was out injured last September
four touchdowns and two interceptions in wins over Louisiana-Monroe and Mississippi State
There's also the fact that Manning could simply exhaust his full draft eligibility and move on to the NFL in 2027
and McShay isn't the only one sharing that opinion
"The Athletic spoke to five executives and scouts for this story
with all leaning in the direction of predicting Arch Manning would return to school in 2026."
In Bleacher Report's early 2026 mock, Brent Sobleski and Matt Holder included Manning but had him going No
"The 19-year-old prospect is exactly what NFL teams want in a modern quarterback," they said of the Gamecocks star
"He's 6'3" and 240 pounds
The underclassman is powerful in the pocket and nearly impossible to bring down at times
"Sellers has the athleticism to work off-platform and create outside of structure
He'll even run over some wannabe tacklers
His whip-like throwing motion allows him to sling it to every level as well."
had a prolific 2024 season after replacing Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels
29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 13 starts
Allar and Klubnik are both former 5-star recruits who took a step forward as juniors
Allar's 207.9 passing yards per game were similar to his 2023 production
but he had a much higher completion percentage (66.5) and passer rating (153.5)
Klubnik nearly doubled his touchdown output (36) and threw three fewer interceptions
ESPN's Matt Miller made the point the 2026 draft class "doesn't feature a clear QB1 heading into the season." Along with Klubnik
he included Baylor’s Sawyer Robertson as a name to follow
Whereas the 2025 draft was pretty barren for teams in need of a quarterback
next year could boast a number of attractive solutions

The last thing any pitcher wants to see is a line drive screaming towards their face. And on Sunday, Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet walked away from that terrifying situation against the Twins — even if he didn't escape completely unscathed
Pitching with no outs in the fourth inning
Garrett Crochet had Carlos Correa's 87 mph line drive clip him on the nose
That deflection off the nose was enough to knock the ball down for second baseman Kristian Campbell to make a play and throw out Correa at first
he got credit for the infield assist on the play
You won't see many 1-4-3 groundouts like that one
Crochet was able to continue on through the fifth inning

Crochet takes no-hitter into the 8th in dazzling return to South SideApril 14th
CHICAGO -- Did Garrett Crochet know something everyone else didn’t when he met with the media in Chicago on Friday
“I'm chasing greatness every time I touch the mound,” the Red Sox left-hander said from the visitors’ dugout at Rate Field
Let's move on.' But it's just seeing how many zeros I can put up every time I go out there.”
Just the mention of a no-hitter, combined with his first start back at Rate Field to face his former team, was enough to get folks excited for Sunday afternoon -- and Crochet more than delivered. Against the White Sox, Crochet took a perfect game into the sixth inning and a no-hitter into the eighth, striking out 11 Chicago batters and allowing just one run in 7 1/3 frames as Boston avoided a sweep in the 3-1 win
Right fielder Brooks Baldwin was the first White Sox hitter to reach base
drawing a walk to lead off the bottom of the sixth
Crochet gave up his first hit to Chicago second baseman Chase Meidroth on his 96th pitch of the afternoon
That brought manager Alex Cora out of the dugout
and he took the ball from the 25-year-old southpaw
who walked off the field to a standing ovation
“I felt like I kept a lot in reserve,” Crochet said
“I didn't really start ramping it up there in velo until later in the game
I feel like I could've thrown five more innings
managers don’t feel a small sense of relief
But that was sort of the case for Cora when Meidroth singled
For most, that brought a sense of disappointment. Obviously, that ended the no-hit bid. That it was Meidroth -- part of the return in the trade that brought Crochet to Boston -- who broke it up may have added to it
But “disappointed” isn’t all Cora was feeling
I've never been so happy for the opponent to get a hit,” Cora said
Cora certainly wanted to see Crochet finish the no-hitter, which would’ve been the first for the franchise in nearly 17 years
But Crochet’s pitch count was also nearing triple digits
Coming off back-to-back 100-plus-pitch starts
and coming off his first season as a starter in 2024
letting Crochet continue to pitch made Cora just a little bit nervous
You're in that dugout and you get a chance to do something special
you have to put in the balance of our season
He threw 96 [pitches] and he got the ‘W,’ so we're all happy now.”
A two-run double from Trevor Story had given the Red Sox a 2-0 lead in the sixth (he added a solo home run in the ninth)
and relievers Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman managed to close things out
So going to the bullpen didn’t cost Boston
Sunday was all about a stellar outing from Crochet
The 11 strikeouts were his most in a game since June 30, 2024. Baldwin and Meidroth were the only two White Sox to reach base while he was on the mound. It was the kind of dominant start that reminded everyone why the Red Sox gave him a six-year, $170 million extension
Crochet didn’t want to make too much out of pitching at his former home ballpark for the first time since the December trade
He tried to think about it as if it were any other start
Story said he's “always revving on 100
In the same ballpark White Sox fans watched him dominate so many hitters in his first year as a starter
they got to see him do it one more time against their squad

The Nationals have released outfielder Stone Garrett, reports Spencer Nusbaum of the Washington Post
Garrett opened the season in Triple-A Rochester
He was designated for assignment in spring training but cleared waivers and remained with the organization as a non-roster player
The 2025 season hasn’t been kind to the 29-year-old Garrett
He’s tallied 51 plate appearances with the Red Wings and recorded an anemic .087/.176/.130 batting line with a mammoth 43.1% strikeout rate
He has just one hit and 13 strikeout in his past 31 plate appearances with Rochester
Garrett has appeared in parts of three major league seasons between the Nationals and Diamondbacks
he’s a .276/.341/.492 hitter — 25% than league average
There’s plenty of reason to take that output with a hefty grain of salt
Garrett has benefited from a .369 average on balls in play and has gone down on strikes in 30.2% of his major league plate appearances
Big league playing time has been scarce for Garrett in recent seasons
He suffered fractures in his fibula and ankle when crashing into the outfield wall at Yankee Stadium in 2023 and spent more than eight months recovering
He logged just six MLB plate appearances in 2024 and spent the rest of the season between Double-A and Triple-A
where he hit only .249/.348/.333 in 79 games
Garrett has shown himself to be capable of clobbering left-handed pitching
He’s a career .279/.333/.541 hitter when holding the platoon advantage
and while his BABIP (.362) and strikeout rate (30.8%) even in those situations point to regression
He’ll need to show more than he did in Rochester this year
but the track record and two remaining minor league option seasons should help him find a minor league deal with another club
Transactions Washington Nationals Stone Garrett
Pearl Jam will gladly take him back as lead guitarist
It’s a stone cold awesome rock and roll name
I met Eddy Vedder at a Seattle Sonics game right when the album 10 was going viral in ’93-ish
Really chill and friendly and signed my ticket stub
I met him at an all flannel fundraiser two weeks ago along with Jose Canseco
Stone will be moving to Michigan & changing his name to Rock Garrett
He’s then going to post free metal signs in front of pawn shops in lower Detroit on May 13
When you are hitting .087 in AAA doesn’t bode well finding another minor league deal with another team
Watch the Mariners sign him and he becomes Victor Robles 2.0
Before that he was developing into something of a fan underdog favorite
It’s too bad his career with the Nats is ending like this but this Nats fan wishes Garret all the best in his next ventures
The rare player with a way better MLB triple slash than minor lg triple slash who could never stick

Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet throws during the first inning of a baseball game against the Minnesota Twins
BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet had a close call Sunday when a line drive skipped off his glove and nose on its way to second base for a groundout
Red Sox manager Alex Cora rushed to the mound with a team trainer after the left-hander narrowly missed a direct hit off the bat of Minnesota shortstop Carlos Correa in the fourth inning
The ball skimmed off Crochet’s glove as he turned his head before it hit his nose and continued its path
Cora and the trainer asked for a towel and Crochet had a small trickle of blood coming out as he blew his nose
“Fine,” said Crochet after Boston’s 5-4 loss to the Twins
just more shooken up at the initial impact than anything.”
He stayed in and struck out the next batter
He then gave up Brooks Lee’s single to center before Harrison Bader bounced to short
“I immediately go touch my nose just to see if it felt normal,” he said
obviously grinded through the last (inning),” Cora said when asked about the shorter outing
“I’m not sure to be honest,” Crochet said
that’s just kind of what I’m chalking it up to.”
The Red Sox picked up the lefty in a trade with the White Sox during the offseason and he agreed to a $170-million, six-year extension with Boston on April 1
