I’ve been seeing it for some time, and I know the fans have, too. There’s even a Message Board topic about how little folks post these days So love Ron Carlivati’s tenure or hate it (or, like I’m guessing most folks, feeling up and down about it), when fan engagement starts to plummet, a change could do some good. If you haven’t yet, see what Paula Cwikly and Jeanne Marie Ford shared about their take on Salem I already wrote a piece about day one feeling different to me but not being clear on why — or if it was just in my own head we got scenes with people that haven’t been seen together much Johnny and Belle (those two never talking has been particularly bad as she’s been hooking up with his dad and is Johnny’s aunt) I feel like it’s even been ages since we’ve seen Maggie and Chad And it just makes sense that Paulina and Brady should have at least some scene together since they’re trading out grandparent duties with the adoption Or not, since it looks like Johnny’s putting a stop to it. And… may have shot EJ He told Jada he’s going to quit Black Patch and take a job out of town now that she’s ended them We’ve finally got a Hernandez family presence and now we’re losing their anchor There hasn’t been official word yet about Galen Gering but… I’ll admit it doesn’t look good for Rafe If Belle and EJ get together for real and Jada and Shawn do And if he doesn’t work for the police force anymore but feel like he was written into a corner But I can’t see this EJ sticking around but the writers gave a reason (and an out) for it in saying emotions can run high after physical trauma I like seeing this side of EJ and Dan Feuerriegel does an amazing job with him But that doesn’t mean it’s permanent so much as a temporary chemical change in his brain He may even try being better after it wears off he’ll fail and he and Belle will crumble. Plus we saw EJ casually lie to Shawn about having nothing to do with Ava’s Aremid adventure so there’s still an undercurrent of shadiness to him no matter what EJ’s line about reflecting while he was in a coma was a bit off but the show made clear the entire time that he kept having flashbacks — while in said coma — to the night he was shot viewing it all as a sort of “out of body experience” that caused him to reflect on things At first, I was thinking that he might be lying about changing because he set the whole shooting up for his own purposes Love me!” But that theory hinged on him finding Rafe’s camera and using it to set up the shooting and frame someone for it there’s no point to him faking the shooting if no one sees it I don’t know what the point of finding the camera was Check out our photo gallery below of daytime’s 50 most shocking deaths of all time.  Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text below and then paste that into your favorite email application Visitation and viewing for Marian Gering will be at Walter Funeral Home (Freeman 2025 with family present from 5-7 PM and memory sharing at 7PM A Memorial Service will be held at Salem- Zion Mennonite Church Memorials can be directed to Heritage Hall and Museum the Et Cetera Shoppe in Freeman and Salem-Zion Mennonite Church and Tillie (Matilda) Graber at the family farm She described herself as “the son her dad never had” From childhood into her young adult years she helped her father herding cattle running the harrow and picking rocks for a penny a piece Marian attended District # Sandhills Energy told the City Council Monday night that the facility is about 95 percent complete with just a handful of items remaining Martinez described some of the remaining items that need to be completed we’ll have a new Nebraska state inspection happen at the project I was just talking about it with Domingo (Palomo … that we’re working through just a couple pieces that he’s waiting for that will then allow for the project to energize,” said Martinez “Basically what that means is once it’s energized it will go through a testing phase from the Sandhills (Energy) side.” Martinez says that testing period will last 72 hours to ensure the facility is operating as it should and meets the standards for the city and the Western Area Power Agency He said that will be followed by a request for permission to operate from the city In response to a question about potential for hail damage but the system has tracking technology that can detect storms and place the panels in a vertical position to minimize the impact He also noted the system components are American-made meaning they’re not the least expensive but are of high quality and testing has shown they perform well in severe weather Hut building on 10th Street in Gering Antonio Avalos from Hastings and Ernesto Garcia from Mitchell purchased the building in early December and are getting it ready for opening They hope to have the restaurant open near the end of January “We struggled a little bit with the utilities because this place has been empty for a while,” Avalos said The duo is unsure of an exact opening date due to a few hiccups with permits that are still needed Both Avalos and Garcia own restaurants in their respective cities and were looking to expand “Then (Garcia) found this building on the website,” Avalos said The pair were drawn to the property because it was on the main throughfare in Gering and the small-town atmosphere of Gering “I’ve been working in restaurants since I was 16,” Avalos said “This is a family business for us,” Garcia said “I’ve been working in restaurants since I was 14 but I have done a little bit of painting and other kinds of jobs Working in restaurants went back further Knaub; brothers-in-law Don (Lois) Uhrich and Bobby Duncan; sister-in-law Shirley (Harold) Ruppel; along with and numerous nieces and nephews have been a staple in the grocery business for over three decades and have recently acquired Gary Super Foods in McCook Weve been talking to Gary for quite a few years about buying the store, Ben said said He knew he wanted to sell eventually and were thrilled that the timing worked out for us to take over. The Dishmans now own 10 Fresh Food stores including two in North Platte and one each at McCook Sterling and Fort Collins; and one in Torrington began his career as a bagger in a local grocery store before working his way up to management he opened his first store in Gering and since then the couple has gradually expanded their grocery store investments While they are keeping many familiar aspects of the store so they can meet the unique needs of the McCook community You have to kind of get the feel of the store, Kerri said Thats something that weve learned in every location Just because we own stores in Nebraska doesnt mean that everybody has the same palette like fresh paint and reorganizing store sections for better flow as well as the 10% senior citizen discount Making shopping easy and affordable with one-of-a-kind items is the goal that can be purchased at one location in the store The McCook store will also introduce a $10 meat tray thats been successful at their other stores The trays will include one item ready for cooking that customers can take home and throw on the grill New value-added items will be available at the meat department such as bacon-wrapped jalapenos and bacon wrapped asparagus Theres also $8 hot rotisserie chickens on Tuesdays Its about making things easier for our customers, Kerri said Whether its a busy weeknight or a family gathering we want to help people get a meal on the table without the hassle. Locally sourced items remains an option for them Their store in Gering offers popcorn that is grown by a local family and the Dishmans are open to partnerships here If we can create a win-win for both us and the local grower Being in the grocery business for 33 years the Dishmans understand the value and importance of local businesses we understand how important it is to shop local Kerri remembered that when the town lost their grocery store They both have an affinity the western half of the state the rest of the state doesnt see you as vital or important but we know thats not the case, Kerri said We want to give people here the same good pricing and new items and trends theyd find in larger cities Plans for a new sign are underway and they will be updating the stores Facebook page to reflect the transition Were excited to be here and we love to be part of the communities that were in, Ben said Weve been doing this for a long time and were passionate about bringing the best to our communities. theyre also passionate change the zoning of a rural residential area to a C-1 neighborhood commercial area The commission considered the zoning request change during its April 1 meeting located on the intersection of Country Club Road and Five Rocks Road has the majority of the property currently vacant “with some older farm sheds on the northern edge of the property (built in 1982),” according to unofficial minutes from the April 1 planning commission meeting Minutes also stated that City of Gering Planner Annie Folck said in documents “Because this property is located on the intersection of Country Club Road and Five Rocks Road this would be an area that is appropriate for neighborhood commercial.” owner of Reichert Construction and other area businesses and properties shared the intent of the proposed property stating the goal a four-suite professional “The specifics could always change but the intent currently is to have a physical therapy suite a medical-massage-type facility and possibly a coffee shop which would have a drive-through businesses like medical facilities and restaurants with no drive through are permitted uses Other uses that have the potential to generate more traffic and parking needs such as drive-through restaurants would be allowed only through a conditional-use permit The Planning Commission minutes cited staff as recommending approval of the zone change because the size of the property being rezoned is small the location is at the intersection of two of the city’s arterials the zone requested was described as “the least intensive of the commercial zones and is intended to provide services relatively close to residential areas.” A number of citizens spoke — both in person and in the form of letters being read — in opposition of the change Lana Payne worried about safety in the area since there is nothing else commercial “You eventually make something that’s probably going to become a blighted area,” Payne said “You’ll put something in with nice intentions then you’ll have all kinds of other businesses trying to get in and out of there that never intended to be there.” Cheryl Page wrote a letter saying that a commercial site in that area will take away from the beauty enjoyed in the residential area of homes that owners take pride in The Gering Golf Course and housing subdivisions are located near the area which offers a view of the Scotts Bluff National Monument Another resident Janie Scanlan questioned why Country Club Road was being classified as an artery since there isn’t an exit at the “top of Country Club Road; it doesn’t go anywhere else.” Residents of the area have also written letters to the editor Cathy Kaufman and Tony Kaufman approving the zoning change George Crews and Steven Alvizar voted against the change Folck said the zoning change application could still before the city council even if it does not have a positive recommendation The Gering City Council is expected to consider the zoning request change at its next meeting Contact Megan Kelley: megan.kelley@starherald.com Humanities Nebraska (HN) has announced that the “Weaving a Nation” Nebraska Chautauqua will come to Gering
