How 'Little House on the Prairie' star Melissa Gilbert shaped a generation of women
Gilbert added in her caption that "The 'Little House' books endure to this day because so many people see themselves in Laura
And she's our window into this adventure."
Gilbert spoke to USA TODAY about how "Little House" changed a generation of young people
"The thing that moves me the most is when people tell me the stories of how 'Little House on the Prairie' impacted their lives
and why it was so important to them," Gilbert told USA TODAY
"A lot of people have said – and I'm sure will continue to say to me – 'Look

has been cast as Laura Ingalls in the 'Little House' reboot

Tidwell, a second round selection by the New York Mets in the 2022 MLB Draft, is set to make his major league debut on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Mets will start Tidwell in game one of a split double header against the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.
Tidwell, who started the 2025 season in Triple-A with the Syracuse Mets, told reporters that when he received the news that he's getting called up, he picked up his 12-week-old Cavapoo puppy named Bentley, walked outside barefoot, and called his parents.
Unfortunately for Tidwell, Bentley won't be making the trip to St. Louis. Instead, Tidwell is leaving the 12-week-old Cavapoo in Syracuse with Mets outfielder Drew Gilbert.
Tidwell and Gilbert were teammates at Tennessee for two seasons.
"We left it (the puppy) back in Syracuse with Gilbert," said Tidwell when asked about Bentley."Do you trust [Gilbert]?" asked a reporter. "Not really," quickly responded Tidwell.
Bentley and Gilbert might be joining Tidwell in the big leagues in the not-too-distant future.
Gilbert, who missed most of the 2024 season due to injury, is off to a hot start in the minor leagues in 2025.
The former Tennessee outfielder hit .375 in six rehab games with Single-A St Lucie (during what was essentially a rehab assignment) before getting promoted to Syracuse. In 13 games at the Triple-A level this season, Gilbert is slashing .275/.426/.425 with 10 walks to only nine strikeouts.
Gilbert actually hit his first Triple-A home run of the season on Saturday.
The Mets don't have a longterm answer at centerfield, but Gilbert is an option that the team will likely consider at some point in 2025.
whereas their supposedly elite pitching staff has sputtered
The Seattle Mariners may be in first place in the AL West, but it's hard to ignore just how backward their 2025 season feels. It is their formerly much-maligned offense that is carrying them
What would help is if the Mariners got George Kirby and Logan Gilbert back in their starting rotation sooner rather than later
Both aces were seen throwing the ball over the weekend
with Kirby doing so in an especially notable way
After missing the first month of the season with inflammation in his right shoulder
the 27-year-old made his first rehab appearance for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers
To say it was encouraging would be an understatement
Kirby threw 42 pitches over three innings against the Las Vegas Aviators on Sunday
His fastball touched 97.8 mph and he struck out four while allowing one hit and no walks
George Kirby tops out at 97.8 mph in his first rehab start with @RainiersLand.Pitching for the first time since Feb. 26, the @Mariners RHP fans 4 and faces one above the minimum in 3 IP. pic.twitter.com/NSNzI6nCXp
As Adam Jude of The Seattle Times wrote on Sunday
the Mariners don't have a firm plan for when Kirby will return to the rotation
Yet he should only need one or two more rehab outings
putting him in line to return in the middle of May
There's never a bad time to welcome back an All-Star hurler whose career stats include a 3.43 ERA and 7.6 strikeout-to-walk ratio
Yet with Seattle starters struggling more than their 3.76 ERA lets on
getting Kirby back stands to be capital-H Huge
yet another encouraging development that took place on Sunday involved Gilbert playing catch at Globe Life Field
Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports shot the footage:
Logan Gilbert is throwing a baseball. pic.twitter.com/Wp2RHlVmiw
Sidelined since April 25 with a mild flexor strain in his right arm
Gilbert was meant to take a two-week break from throwing
as making lob tosses while playing catch isn't the same as "throwing" when the player in question is a pitcher
Even still, this particular game of catch reinforces what we were already thinking about Gilbert's injury: it could have been so much worse
Season-ending Tommy John surgery was the worst-case scenario for Gilbert
but it now seems as if that possibility is off the table entirely
As part of an interview with Brian Kenny on MLB Now on Friday
Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said he hopes Gilbert's return will happen in the general vicinity of Kirby's return
“We’re hopeful that we’re gonna see both this month, which is a little better we had thought initially,” Dipoto said, as per Brent Stecker of Seattle Sports
The 28-year-old Gilbert led the majors in innings and WHIP in 2024
and his first 30.1 innings of this year had yielded a 2.37 ERA
At 20-13, the Mariners already lead the AL West ahead of this week's showdown with the Athletics in Sacramento
If they can be this good despite not having their two best pitchers together in the rotation until May
the imagination naturally runs wild when thinking about what might come next

PHOENIX – Gilbert is saving taxpayers millions of dollars by paying off the debt on the downtown University Building ahead of schedule
The debt will be retired 20 years earlier than originally planned
saving taxpayers over $15.4 million in interest
The Gilbert Town Council unanimously adopted a resolution on April 22 to pay off nearly $30 million
with about $2.3 million coming from the Debt Service Reserve Fund and approximately $27.6 million from the General Fund
“I think this is a great achievement and shows financial management in the town and how strong it really is, and I’m thankful for that,” Mayor Scott Anderson said in a press release Monday
The University Building opened in the Heritage District at 92 W
Saint Xavier University signed a long-term lease for a satellite campus in the building
but the Illinois-based school pulled out after one year due to budget issues in its home state
In 2018, Missouri-based Park University moved into part of the University Building
Gilbert later added the University of Arizona as a tenant. The Tucson-based school moved specialized nursing programs into the building in 2022

William "Owen" Hines will spend 17 years in prison for his part in the "Gilbert Goons" attack that killed Preston Lord and for a drunken driving crash that left another teen with traumatic brain injuries
The 19-year-old was sentenced May 2 to 12 years in prison for manslaughter in Lord's attack at a 2023 Halloween party in Queen Creek
He got another five years for aggravated assault in the drunken driving case
Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Scott McCoy said the prison terms would be consecutive and include 456 days for time served
followed by at least three years of probation
"It is my sincere hope that what we do here today is the first step for all of you on the road to healing," McCoy said at the end of a nearly three-hour hearing in a courtroom packed with Lord's family
Other victims of Goons beatings were there
who all addressed the court and asked for the maximum sentence of 21 years
Their statements were followed by a video montage of Lord
McCoy said he was forced to weigh Hines' willingness to take responsibility
his age and his history of addiction against his willingness to engage in repeated assaults and the substantial pain he caused
"I don't know that I've seen anyone more anxious to plead guilty," McCoy said
He noted Hines had many chances to correct his behavior after run-ins with the law
but still participated in Lord's beating death
McCoy at times seemed to struggle as he delivered the sentence
pausing several times as he talked through his decision
Lord used the words 'tragic' and 'senseless,'" McCoy said
"If ever there was a case that was tragic and senseless
dressed in an orange jumpsuit and flanked by his lawyers
"There isn't one day that goes by when I don’t think about that night.”
He read a written statement that was directed to his victims and their families as much as it was to the judge
the teen he hit while speeding through a red light
that he hoped God would continue to take care of him
"I pray that recovery has been swift," Hines said
"And you still will one day be able to do the things that you want to do to the fullest extent
Follow your dreams and never stop fighting."
He told the Lord family that Preston was an outstanding man; "a kind soul senselessly taken from this world."
"He didn't deserve not one of those kicks or punches," Hines said
adding it would be wrong to ask Lord's parents for forgiveness
but instead referred to his struggles with addiction that began when he was 15 and first found solace from the bottle
Hines' parents spoke on his behalf and called him remorseful and compassionate
They said they were determined to help him become a man people could be proud of
"His actions do not reflect his heart," his mother
"Owen in his soul is not the person who kicked Preston
He is the person who immediately stopped and was begging the others to stop
He is the young man who is living with his remorse and shame and pain."
Five of Preston Lord's relatives and a lawyer representing the family gave emotional testimony
describing the teen's potential as a gifted student
a classroom leader and an athlete who went out of his way to help people
"There are no words that can truly capture the pain of losing our son," Preston's stepmother
She said Hines needed to understand the magnitude of his actions
"I want you to feel the weight of the pain you have caused," Ciconte said
"I hope that every day for the rest of your life you remember his name
spoke about how proud he was of his son and how his world had been shattered
said Hines' actions undermined his words of contrition
He said Hines was only remorseful because he got caught
"His crocodile tears when he changed his plea to guilty to manslaughter and to the other attacks really mean nothing to me or to his victims and their families," Reich said
Nick Lord said he was not disappointed by the sentence but said he would never be satisfied; that no sentence would ever be long enough
"I'm not going to say that I am pleased," Nick Lord said
"We have accepted the terms" of the plea deal
Nick Lord said his family was bracing itself for the next cases and making sure the other six defendants accused in his son's beating are held accountable
"I am prepared to do whatever it takes to see this thing through," he said
He said Hines' sentence was "OK" and that he would "accept it."
He said there were more important things to do now
including ensuring the passage of Preston's Law
which would make criminal sentences tougher for people found guilty of participating in group attacks
Reich said Gilbert officials also need to be held accountable for turning a blind eye to a string of attacks by the Goons for more than a year before his grandson was killed
Hines avoids first-degree murder and kidnapping chargesHines and six others were initially charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping charges in Lord's death
Hines agreed to plead guilty to manslaughter during a settlement conference in March. He told McCoy that he was haunted by his role in the killing
He said he was in the throes of multiple addictions — drugs
alcohol and hallucinogens — when he and other Goons punched
kicked and stomped Lord and left him lying in the street
Hines also pleaded guilty in connection with two other nonfatal Goons attacks in 2022 and for hitting another car and injuring Zazick while driving under the influence in 2023
Prosecutors with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office dropped a kidnapping charge against Hines in Lord's death
They also recommended supervised probation in the two Goons beating cases in Gilbert
one at an In-N-Out Burger and the other at a house party
The plea deal does not require Hines to testify against other people accused of attacking Lord
Lawyers for the Lord family confirmed after Hines entered his guilty plea that there was no agreement requiring him to cooperate with prosecutors
McCoy sentenced him to at least three years' probation following his release from prison for the beating cases
He could be 36 years old when he gets out of prison
Lord and his friends crossed paths with Goons at a chaotic Oct
party that drew hundreds of teens from across metro Phoenix to an upscale suburban neighborhood
The two groups of teens were unknown to each other
The Goons targeted Lord's friends as they were leaving
Lord was knocked to the ground with a punch to the face — then his attackers descended on him
He died two days later from traumatic brain injuries without ever regaining consciousness
According to a Queen Creek police report
Hines told a friend on the night of the attack that he kicked Lord in the stomach
He told the friend he felt bad and questioned why the others accused of beating Lord kicked him in the head
A December 2023 investigation by The Arizona Republic tied Lord's killing to the Goons
a gang of teenagers who recorded their blitz-style attacks on teens in parks and parking garages
outside fast-food restaurants and at house parties
went unchecked by authorities for more than a year
The Republic has documented 18 attacks involving 95 people in Goons assaults since November 2022
Mesa and Pinal County began making arrests tied to the beatings in January 2024
The Queen Creek Police Department, which led the homicide investigation, began making arrests in March 2024. A Maricopa County grand jury indicted Hines along with Treston Billey
and Talyn Vigil in connection with Lord's death
The others charged in Lord's killing have all pleaded not guilty
But Meisner and Sherman have requested settlement conferences in their cases scheduled for May 29 and 30
The screen showed Meisner's father was among those watching remotely

Logan Gilbert was placed on the 15-day injured list April 26 one day after he was pulled early from a start against the Miami Marlins
The initial diagnosis was a Grade 1 right elbow flexor strain
The timeline for Gilbert had him shut down from throwing for two weeks before being reassessed for a throwing and rehab program
Per a video posted on "X" from Seattle Sports' Shannon Drayer
Gilbert might be a little ahead of schedule
He was throwing warm-up pitches before a game against the Texas Rangers on Sunday
There wasn't a concrete date provided on Gilbert's return
but a June or July return was expected if there were no further setbacks in his injury
Seattle president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto went on MLB Network on Friday and said that Gilbert's injury wasn't as serious as the team initially thought
He followed that up by saying both Gilbert and fellow starting pitcher George Kirby could both return by the end of May
Kirby is set to begin his rehab assignment with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers on Sunday
but the fact that Gilbert is already tossing a baseball ahead of the initial two-week shutdown timeline is a good sign that Dipoto's comments could come to fruition
Gilbert had a 2.37 ERA this season with 44 strikeouts in 30.1 innings pitched across six starts before being shut down
He was named an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2024
Gilbert had a 3.23 ERA and fanned 220 batters across 208.2 innings pitched in 33 starts that year

CHICAGO — The White Sox announced six roster moves ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Houston Astros
including putting infielder Josh Rojas on the active roster for the first time this season and promoting two pitchers from Triple-A Charlotte
a veteran who signed a one-year contract with Chicago in January
was reinstated from the 10-day injured list after a rehab appearance Tuesday with Charlotte
He suffered a hairline fracture in his right big toe during spring training and was set to make his first start with the White Sox on Sunday at third base
I think it’s going to be one of those things that lingers around for a little bit
Rojas knew he wouldn’t be much help to the team playing at a level that he described as “25% to 30%.”
“A lot of my game relies on being athletic,” Rojas said
“If I was just a power-hitting third baseman
but I’ve got to be able to run the bases full speed
I’ve got to be able to make plays in the hole
I’ve got to be able to beat out infield singles
I’ve got to be able to do all the little things and my game relies heavily on being able to do those things
My toe was not in a place to be able to do that until about a week ago.”
Rojas spent the first 4 1/2 seasons of his career in Arizona before a midseason trade to Seattle in 2023
Chicago also selected the contract of right-hander Caleb Freeman from Charlotte
The White Sox drafted Freeman out of Texas Tech in the 15th round in 2019 and promoted him to the majors for the first time in his career
Chicago’s bullpen has struggled this season
this is going on Year 7 of pro ball right now,” Freeman said
“I’m just grateful to be here and ready to go.”
Left-hander Tyler Gilbert was recalled from Charlotte as well
He has played nine games for the White Sox this season
posting a 1-1 record with a 5.59 ERA before being optioned on April 30
Chicago placed lefty Fraser Ellard on the 15-day injured list with a left lat strain
Fraser suffered the injury in Saturday’s 8-3 loss to Houston
in which he allowed two earned runs in two-thirds of an inning
The White Sox also optioned righty Penn Murfee to Charlotte and designated infielder Bobby Dalbec for assignment

SEATTLE MARINERS
10:52 AM | Updated: 11:32 am
The injury bug hit the Seattle Mariners hard in April
but May could see their fortunes turn around – particularly for their starting pitchers
Based on AL rankings, Mariners made right call with offense
Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto joined MLB Network’s MLB Now on Friday morning
and he gave a very encouraging update on the two most notable players on Seattle’s injured list right now
Dipoto said the Mariners could see both 2023 All-Star George Kirby and 2024 All-Star Logan Gilbert return to the rotation in May
“We’re hopeful that we’re gonna see both this month
which is a little better we had thought initially,” Dipoto said at the end of his conversation with host Brian Kenny
as he was shut down during spring training with right shoulder inflammation
The 27-year-old right-hander threw live batting practice at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park on Monday
and M’s general manager Justin Hollander said Wednesday that Kirby was on track to begin a rehab assignment in the minor leagues this weekend
Related: Mariners GM shares updates on slew of injured players
Dipoto estimated that Kirby will need “at least two minor league starts
perhaps three,” before he can make his season debut with the Mariners
is a “little behind” Kirby in his rehab track
Gilbert came out of his start on April 25 after three perfect innings and was placed on the 15-day injured list the following day with a right elbow flexor strain
“We think they’re both gonna return sometime before the end of May if everything goes the way it is currently,” Dipoto said
0.791 WHIP and 44 strikeouts to six walks over six starts and 30 1/3 innings in 2025
and led MLB in both innings pitched (208 2/3) and WHIP (0.887) on his way to finishing sixth in the American League Cy Young Award voting
Kirby went 14-11 with a 3.53 ERA and 1.068 WHIP over 191 innings in 2024
He led MLB in walks per nine innings in both 2023 (0.9) and 2024 (1.1)
and strikeouts to walk ratio also in 2023 (9.05) and 2024 (7.78)
Emerson Hancock and rookie Logan Evans have filled their spots in the rotation
who in 2020 became the third straight right-handed starter out of college picked in the first round of the MLB Draft by Seattle (following Gilbert in 2018 and Kirby in 2019)
but he has posted quality starts in each of his last two outings
Evans, a 23-year-old righty who Seattle drafted in the 12th round in 2023, allowed two runs on two hits and three walks over five innings to earn the win in his MLB debut last Sunday against the Miami Marlins
The AL West-leading Mariners (18-12) begin a six-game road trip at 5:05 p.m
Radio coverage on Seattle Sports begins at 4 p.m

Five-star men's basketball recruit and USC commit Alijah Arenas has been placed in an induced coma after he was involved in a serious car crash in the Los Angeles area early Thursday morning
According to the Los Angeles Police Department
officers responded shortly before 4:55 a.m
to a single-vehicle collision in the Reseda area of the San Fernando Valley
The LA Fire Department further said the vehicle was a Tesla Cybertruck that crashed into a tree/fire hydrant with fire involved
The LAFD did not identify the person involved but said that the 18-year-old driver was out of the vehicle and that he was transported to the hospital in serious condition
The Los Angeles Police Department said later Thursday that Arenas was in stable condition
Sources told ESPN that initial tests showed he did not suffer broken bones
USC men's basketball coach Eric Musselman said in a statement on X: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Alijah and his family following this morning's accident
and the entire Arenas family in your prayers."
Arenas is a son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas
13-ranked recruit in the class of 2025 after reclassifying in December and then committing to the Trojans in January
He attends Chatsworth High School in Los Angeles
and he played for them in the Division II state championships this year

lot worse': Gilbert exits early with forearm tightnessApril 26th
SEATTLE -- Logan Gilbert was on cruise control on Friday night
carving through the Marlins’ lineup and needing just 29 pitches to work through three perfect innings
Which made the Mariners’ call to the bullpen to begin the fourth that much more abrupt
as Gilbert was relieved by journeyman long reliever Casey Lawrence to begin the inning
Then one inning later in an eventual 8-4 loss
the Mariners announced that Gilbert exited with right forearm tightness
A source with knowledge of the situation told MLB.com that initial medical reviews revealed “modest” but “not zero” concern
and specifically that there’s optimism that his UCL is still intact
But the Mariners won't know more until after he undergoes an MRI on Saturday
“I don't want to make it like a pity party about myself,” Gilbert said
just kind of how I want to be known -- eating innings and being dependable and being healthy
But I've been healthy and never really came out of a start
Gilbert has never been on the injured list since his debut on May 13
2021 -- making every scheduled start since
“I've got a lot of faith,” Gilbert said
Gilbert experienced diminished velocity across all his pitches throughout the brief outing
His four-seam fastball velocity was down 1 mph from his 95.6 mph season average
his two-seamer was down 0.3 mph and his curveball was down 0.8 mph
The heater topped out at 96.1 mph and was as low as 93 mph
And he opted not to throw his splitter at all
as that specific pitch can cause more strain on the forearm
“We didn’t think it was a good idea,” Gilbert said
adding that he began noticing the issue when warming up and that it “just never really went away.”
Gilbert was seen with far less effort on his long tosses
his warmup pitches were mostly without a windup
“It didn't really get like a ton worse
The slight drop in speed was notable given that the workhorse typically carries his velocity from start to finish
compared to other starters who build it as their outing progresses
I feel like there's just a hump you kind of got to get over,” Gilbert said
“And I felt like I was almost at that point
and April can be tough as you just get some stressful pitches to get over the hump
it just didn't really get to that point.”

Nicholas Gilbert received a delivery of grain for the 1,400 cows he tends at his dairy farm in Potsdam
The feed came with a surprise tariff of $2,200 tacked on
“I had a contracted price on that grain delivered to my barn
And they added that tariff right on top because it comes from a Canadian feed mill.”
Gilbert cannot increase the price of the milk he sells
He cannot buy feed from another supplier; there aren’t any nearby
and getting it from farther away would be more expensive
Shouldn’t his Canadian supplier have been responsible for paying it
If your price of fuel goes up or your truck breaks down
The dairy farmer is one of tens of thousands of American business owners caught in a spiraling trade war
and lives in one area of the United States that might already be tipping into a recession because of it
Businesses near the Canadian border are particularly vulnerable to the rising costs and falling revenue caused by tariffs
or wondering how they are going to keep feeding their cows as a result
President Donald Trump kicked off his long-promised trade war by applying levies to steel
and Mexico soon after he took office—insisting
that foreign companies would pay the tariffs and that American growth would surge
he unleashed a global shock-and-awe campaign
announcing tariffs on every American trading partner
Rogé Karma: Trump’s most inexplicable decision yet
The measures are meant to counter foreign countries’ tariffs and trade barriers
But the numbers announced have nothing to do with such policies
The White House set a minimum 10 percent levy on imports from around the world
and imposed higher rates on imports from more than 60 countries
The administration appears to have derived those higher rates by dividing the value of the country’s bilateral trade deficit with the United States by the value of its exports to the United States
The nonsensical policy will nevertheless have real effects. American consumer goods will get more expensive, with the average family paying an estimated $3,800 more a year for groceries
and everything else if the tariff rates remain this high
The United States risks collapsing into an astonishing voluntary recession
caused solely by a few powerful ideologues’ erroneous beliefs about trade
If you want to understand where the American economy is heading
the United States has dozens of communities that are not so much linked to Canada’s economy as interwoven with it
Gas stations in these places rely on business from Canadian commuters
Ski resorts and water parks rely on Canadian tourists
Manufacturing firms rely on Canadian industrial inputs
Hotels rely on Canadian business conferences
Annie Lowrey: Don’t invite a recession in
Most companies pass the cost increase on to consumers
“We’re taking that right on the chin,” Gilbert told me
explaining that he would have to pay tariffs on the fertilizer and farm equipment he buys too
“We’re not like other businesses,” he told me
Manufacturing firms and construction companies near the border face the same quandaries as the costs of steel
These firms can’t quickly relocate their operations or find new suppliers either
“We surveyed 40 of our manufacturing companies in the region,” Garry Douglas
of New York’s North Country Chamber of Commerce
“One sources raw materials from Canada and is looking at a $16 million cost increase to their U.S
Another company is a paper mill that sources wood pulp from Canada
It’s the one source of the type of wood they need.”
At the same time as it is raising costs for border businesses, Trump’s quixotic trade war with Canada is depressing revenue for these businesses too. Dan Kelleher runs a tourism-promotion agency in the Adirondacks
“We had a terrific January in terms of overall visitation,” he told me
“Our numbers were up 24 percent over the five-year average
And then February came.” The president kept referring to Canada as the “51st state,” and hit the United States’ closest ally with a 25 percent tariff
Spending on lodging dropped 4 percent in February
with retailers reporting a 20 percent decline in sales
particularly hockey tournaments,” Kelleher said
they’re not spending any money here.” He worried about the summer tourist season
and more so about the relationship between residents of the Adirondacks and their neighbors across the border
Ron Kurnik is a dual citizen who lives in Canada and commutes across the border to run Superior Coffee Roasting
a café and coffee distributor in Sault Ste
“One of our premier labels is an espresso blend
which I aptly termed the friendly neighbors,” he told me
and our relationship with the residents of this area.”
Rogé Karma: Trump’s tariffs are designed to backfire
Residents of border towns see their shopping malls and greasy spoons half empty. They read stories in the local paper about rising construction costs and Canadians detained at border crossings. They notice the lack of hiring signs. They hear about the trade war on the evening news. As a result, many are reducing their own spending in expectation of a downturn: putting off home repairs, delaying the purchase of a new car, canceling vacations, eating in instead of ordering out.
In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Kurnik was penciling out numbers on Wednesday—when retailers might raise prices for a bag of beans, how much to slow down production—while Trump was preparing for his speech in the Rose Garden. “We can’t operate a business flying by the seat of our pants,” he told me. “The administration can organize itself in that fashion. But how do you realistically expect me to follow suit?”

the Chatsworth High star and crown jewel of USC’s incoming recruiting class
was involved in a serious Cybertruck accident on Thursday morning
a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to discuss it publicly told The Times
Arenas was in a Tesla Cybertruck early Thursday morning when the vehicle lost control near the corner of Corbin Avenue and Blythe Street in Reseda
when the Cybertruck struck a fire hydrant and tree
The 18-year-old driver was pulled from the wreckage and taken to a hospital where he was stable
according to LAPD Officer Rosario Cervantes
A source told The Times that drugs and alcohol were not involved in the crash
A tree and caution tape remain at the scene of a Cybertruck crash involving Chatsworth basketball star Alijah Arenas on Thursday. (Handout) Arenas was placed in a coma, a person with knowledge of the crash told The Times. ESPN’s Shams Charania was the first to report the crash and Arenas’ condition
Photos of the crash site obtained by The Times show the silver Cybertruck wrapped around a tree hours later, with a “no parking” sign crumpled between the two. The windshield and both driver’s side windows were shattered and a piece of hydrant was lodged underneath the broken wheel well.
Hours after the crash, the Cybertruck was taken from the scene and burst into flames at a tow yard. According to a source, the Los Angeles Fire Hazard Mat responded to the ensuing hazardous materials incident.
Alijah is the son of former NBA player Gilbert Arenas, who canceled plans to stream a new episode of his online show Thursday. His mother, Laura Govan, posted on Instagram shortly after asking for “all your … prayers.”

For USC, Alijah Arenas’ commitment marks the biggest recruiting victory of the Musselman era, the first five-star prospect to endorse the coach’s vision in L.A.
A top-10 recruit in the 2025 class, Alijah Arenas led Chatsworth High to the CIF Division II state championship game in March. He left Chatsworth as the all-time City Section scoring leader, with more than 3,000 points, and recently competed in the McDonald’s All-American game.
Arenas was slated to play a major role as a freshman at USC after choosing the Trojans over more established basketball powers such as Arizona, Kansas and Kentucky.
USC coach Eric Musselman, in a statement on social media, said that “our thoughts and prayers are with Alijah and his family following this morning’s accident. Please keep him, his teammates and friends, and the entire Arenas family in your prayers.”
Chatsworth students had the day off from school Thursday in observance of Armenian Genocide Memorial Day.

11:26pm: Gilbert told reporters (including Adam Jude of The Seattle Times) that he expects to go for an MRI tomorrow
Gilbert’s fastball was in the 94-95 MPH range throughout the night
right in line with his 95.6 MPH season average
but the M’s are obviously going to be extremely cautious with any kind of forearm discomfort
Gilbert entered play tonight with a 2.63 earned run average and 41 strikeouts through his first 27 1/3 innings
It was an even more impressive start than last year
when he landed sixth in AL Cy Young balloting after posting a 3.23 ERA over an MLB-high 208 2/3 frames
Skipper Dan Wilson will presumably provide more information postgame
It’s impossible to know the severity this soon
but it’s a concerning development anytime a top pitcher experiences forearm discomfort
It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Mariners send Gilbert for imaging over the weekend
He’s expected to throw live batting practice next week
but he’s certainly still weeks away from a return to major league action
Seattle Mariners George Kirby Logan Gilbert
“Ruh-roh” – Abraham Lincoln
“Allright alright alright!” Abraham (a Bra hamming it up) in a Lincoln
This season will not be fun if we lose him
With how our roster is built we need all of our starting pitchers to be healthy to even think about the playoffs
Make sure to get 2nd and 3rd opinions…
Hoping that 2nd and 3rd opinion isn’t sarcasm
With the recovery timeline of TJS and the seriousness of it to one’s arm I’d hope all players get at least a 2nd opinion
With the timing 2025 is gone either way and bulk of 2026
Sucks cus the UCL endemic that’s been plaguing MLB has been depriving the sport and the fans from alot of its top talent
The catch 22 here is the balance if having pitchers dial it back to ensure arm health over peak performance
It seems it would be hard to quantify which would ultimately add the most to peak performance
Ensuring arm health would lower pitch speeds and spin rates
On the other hand keeping top arms in games would offset to whatever extent as the top arms provide more value at less than 100% opposed to back of rotation and those barely hanging in bullpen
Would love to see someone try and quantify it tho as far as the effect on peak performance
From a financials perspective it’s obviously viable as teams haven’t pushed for change
As you can see there’s a typo or 2 I left
In all seriousness I do wonder if pushing pitchers to the nth degree is ultimately providing the best overall product
I also wonder how far pitchers would have to dial it back to prevent these injuries and if that would make that significant of a difference
There has to a way to try and quantify the net gains in performance from either approach
You need to be a bit more honest on the runs Hancock has given up
Seems to me Hancock has secured his spot as the 6th man
He seems to have that 1 game and after it gets assimilated into his stats and doesn’t show up on the stats as a glaring red stop light
“Emerson Hancock” sounds like a fellow who
and the lockout might cost you the ‘27 season
Neither of the greedy owners or players think of their fans
They can not play for a bit and lose fans to other sports
only for us to have another session of juicing to bring popularity back to the game
Still too early to say but doesn’t look good
Hopefully they don’t drag this out if he ends up needing TJ surgery
Gonna need him back asap even if it’s next year….
@M’s due to the timing if he has TJS delaying it a bit won’t affect much at this point
Recovery would stretch well into 2026 and any appearances in 2026 would be severely limited
It sucks but TJS has become part of the game
Teams willing to roll the dice and hope peak performance out weighs the total time lost to injury
Players willing to roll those same dice as that’s what it takes to get the insane TOR contracts
I hope he goes under the knife sooner than later so we will get some of him back for 2026
The difference between that 14 and 18 is significant
average TJS patient returns in 15 months and then is treated with caution
They miss the playoffs by two games instead of one
Hopefully it’s just some early season soreness
There’s plenty of the good sh%t in Seattle
Forearm tightness seems to always lead to TJS
Either before the end of this season or the beginning of next
Grok says “it’s plausible that 30-50% of MLB pitchers placed on the IL for forearm tightness eventually require Tommy John surgery
either immediately or after failed conservative treatments”
Then they say they are looking for a second opinion
Ryan Weathers is another dude that I see next for a TJ
Luzardo could be since that dude is injury prone
Those who are gravitating to the worst case scenario are being frivolous

With the support of his MGH department chair
he often took classes during the afternoons
“I used to put my running shoes on and run to campus
which took me home,” says L’Italien
In 1990, after successfully completing nearly all the requisite coursework, he transitioned into the School’s DSc in Epidemiology program (now the PhD in Epidemiology program)
“It took a few tries to get accepted into the program
but by then I had performed quite well in my classes and had received the endorsement of several of my professors,” he says
As a student, L’Italien conducted clinical research, using data from several hospitals across the country to develop and validate a Bayesian model for the assessment of cardiac risk among candidates for vascular surgery
He defended his thesis on the topic in 1997
a total of ten years after first beginning his studies
L’Italien established the Georgette L’Italien Memorial Scholarship at SPH in honor of his late mother
The scholarship provides stipends to one or more PhD students based on financial need
Ahead of the School’s 2025 convocation
he shared insights on his decision to attend SPH
and his plans for his message to graduates
How did you come to choose SPH for your higher education
but I’ve always had a recognition of how rigorous the School of Public Health has been at BU because of its track record
because of the number and quality of publications
and he gave me some tremendous insights—I’m forever grateful to him for this—he said
“I acknowledge that you have a tremendous amount of research experience
so take the intermediate (and later advanced) classes and apply to the doctoral program.” I had researched other schools
but this approach made the most sense to me
Your current role involves two aspects of drug development: clinical outcomes assessments and health economics
Can you talk more about what you do at Biohaven
The first drug we researched was for migraine
Clinical outcomes assessment leverages scales and measures within the clinical trials that capture disability and quality of life
and these data can be compared to ‘real world’ data within external databases
I’m very proud of the peer reviewed publications that we generated from this research
because we made a contribution to enhancing the knowledge of the burden of migraine to the public health
it was a matter of developing what’s called a value proposition [or] value dossier
tolerability and these attributes of value define the so-called cost-effectiveness of the therapy
I transitioned my team’s focus exclusively on clinical outcomes assessment
leveraging real-world epidemiologic data to support clinical trial development
One area of focus pertains to the use of real-world registries that provides matched external control groups for one of the treatment arms in our clinical trial of spinal cerebellar ataxia
which is a very debilitating condition wherein the cerebellum undergoes morphologic changes that affect speech
This study is a key component of our regulatory submission
and if approved it speaks to the import of such innovative designs that could substitute for long-term placebo controlled studies
What do you hope to share with graduates in your convocation speech
One of his quotes really resonated with me
when people speak to you of their lived experiences it gives you a sense of what they went through
I know that he was initially referring to Holocaust survivors but I know that he meant for all of us to listen with respect to people’s lived experiences as they approach the end of their lives
I’ve been a hospice volunteer at a local nursing home for the last 22 years
and that experience has just been profound for me
Because when you visit someone on a weekly basis for months
people in nursing homes still have rich lives
and are close to the their fellow residents
I have ‘witnessed’ the experiences of many World War II veterans and their spouses—they were very special people
What do you think the next generation of public health leaders could learn from the prior generation’s stories
I regard myself as a scientist—I love the science—and science really contributes to our clinical knowledge and ability to treat patients and prevent disease
but there is this other aspect [of life]—connecting with human beings and “witnessing” their life stories as their companion and friend
I am inspired to see this similar quality in the current generation of recent graduates: a sincere desire to help others who are in need

It’s easy to say a music video is just a music video
not to be taken seriously or deeply analyzed when it’s viewed in isolation
pop culture does not exist in a vacuum but rather in an ecosystem of messaging that tells us what is valued
Taking both a birds-eye view and a microscope to many of the cultural moments we lived through
and other elements of pop culture from the 1990s to the 2010s
Sophie Gilbert makes the case that pop culture is a powerful force that shapes our view and treatment of women in public and in private in her new book
Girl on Girl: How Pop Culture Turned a Generation of Women Against Themselves
“Our culture teaches us everything,” she writes
As someone who lived through the events and culture you excavate in Girl on Girl
what would you go back and tell your sixteen-year-old self in 1999 from the lens you have now on the pop culture that shaped your generation
So much of the culture of that moment was thrilling to me at 16
I would love to say that it’s okay to feel uncomfortable
and that actually discomfort is a sign of strength
not weakness — it signals that you know more than you think
I remember so well feeling like I had to suppress my own instincts to be accepted
but my instincts were actually pretty good even then
On understanding how tabloid culture portrayed women in the early 2000s
you write “disgust is one of the most powerful human responses and one of the least studied.” Did you learn anything in your research about how we can counter the use of disgust in the media that turns people against marginalized groups?Simply being aware of when disgust is being weaponized is really powerful
as is learning to identify how it’s being triggered and to what end
And it’s crucial to not ever let politicians or public figures who use disgust-engendering language seem like the new normal
because what they’re doing is both extreme and dangerous
What is a recent piece of pop culture that excited you about how women are portrayed
I loved Dying for Sex on FX — how fearless Michelle Williams’s performance was
and how willing the show was to really get into the complexity of desire
I appreciated how willing Babygirl was to be ambiguous and to leave space for us to interpret it
I also adored the last Bridget Jones movie — the pathos and humor of Bridget’s journey in midlife

Alijah Arenas, a basketball recruit for USC and son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas
has been released from the hospital less than one week after a fiery single-car crash
his family said in a statement to ESPN's Shams Charania
The Arenas family said Wednesday in its statement that Alijah was "resting comfortably under close watch" and that his "spirit remains strong."
"We are grateful to share that Alijah Arenas has been released from the hospital and is now resting comfortably under close watch," the statement said
"While his journey to full recovery is just beginning
"The Govan and Arenas family are preparing for the road ahead with faith and determination
committed to nurturing Alijah back to 100%
The family also asked in the statement for continued privacy as they "focus fully on Alijah's healing and well-being."
was driving back from the gym early last Thursday when
according to a statement earlier this week on Gilbert Arenas' podcast
he "lost control" of the Tesla Cybertruck he was driving in the Reseda area of the San Fernando Valley
the vehicle crashed into a tree and/or fire hydrant
Video obtained by TMZ shows the front of Alijah Arenas' vehicle on fire after the crash
with two people attempting to help remove him from the truck while water sprays from a damaged fire hydrant
Alijah Arenas was transported to a hospital and put into an induced coma because of his inhalation of smoke
and the statement on Gilbert Arenas' podcast revealed that Alijah Arenas had not suffered any "major injuries" as a result of the crash
An official cause for the crash has not been released
13-ranked recruit in the class of 2025 after reclassifying in December and committing to the Trojans in January
The five-star prospect attends Chatsworth High School in Los Angeles
helping lead the team to the final of the Division II state championships this year
Arenas became the first high school boys' basketball player in the Los Angeles area to reach 3,000 career points
who made the All-Star team and received Cy Young votes
has joined him there due to a flexor strain
and the Mariners soon announced that he had departed due to forearm tightness
“I felt it a little bit warming up,” said Gilbert
Sometimes you just get going and it feels a little better
As MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer described it
both Gilbert’s pregame long-toss and warm-up pitches were of lesser intensity — he mostly didn’t use a windup for the latter — than usual
He didn’t throw a single split-fingered fastball because of the stress the pitch places on his forearm
“We didn’t think it was a good idea,” he said
as though throwing mid-90s fastballs and breaking balls through discomfort was otherwise perfectly sound logic
just kind of how I want to be known — eating innings and being dependable and being healthy,” said Gilbert
But I’ve been healthy and never really came out of a start
An MRI taken on Saturday revealed that Gilbert had suffered a Grade 1 flexor strain, meaning that it was a mild one, “relatively good news,” as the righty said
He was placed on the 15-day injured list for the first time in his career
and will be shut down from throwing for at least two weeks before being reexamined
A return sometime in June is the best-case scenario
Gilbert finished sixth in the AL Cy Young race last year on the strength of a 3.23 ERA, 3.27 FIP and 4.1 WAR, and tied for second in the voting in our preseason staff poll
One notable change in his approach from 2024 to ’25 is that he had been throwing his splitter more often: 21.2% (22.6% prior to Friday)
The pitch has been especially effective; last year
batters hit .101 and slugged .162 while whiffing on 50.6% of their swings at the offering
they’re at .067 AVG (1-for-30) and .100 SLG with a 50% whiff rate
In light of Gilbert’s words and approach on Friday
it’s fair to wonder whether that uptick in usage factored into his injury
and whether he’ll back off his increased reliance on the pitch once he returns
Evans has begun to take a sweeper-first approach to pitching
Whereas last year he was using it 31% of the time
so far this year his breaking ball usage has been 46%
Evans’ slider spins at 2,800 rpm and has hellacious lateral wipe
His reliance on it robs it of some bat-missing ability
and Evans’ slider’s miss rate the last couple of years has been pretty average because he’s so often trying to throw it for strikes and hitters anticipate its arrival
But because Evans’ fastball is fairly vulnerable
he’s forced to lean on his breaking stuff
up to 97) has only generated six whiffs across 200 total pitches so far in 2025 (including his big league start)
hitters (in the minors and majors combined) have a .965 OPS against his mix of sinkers and four-seamers
Evans can change pitch shape and speed off of his primary sinker/sweeper mix
He’ll throw some harder cutters around 87 mph
as well as some slower curveballs and changeups
it’s really only the slider that’s plus
he throws a good rate of strikes and gets groundballs
he proved he could sustain this kind of stuff across more than 100 innings
Without a single pitch generating plus miss
he’s probably not going to be a star
but he does enough to be a useful member of a big league rotation
and his 45 FV grade is above the 40+ FV of last cycle when I thought Evans looked more like a nasty swingman or long reliever
Evans made his major league debut on Sunday against the Marlins
allowing two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three in five innings; he got his first W in Seattle’s 7-6 victory
Both his four-seamer and sinker sat in the 91-95 range and averaged 92.9 mph
He threw six different pitch types including the two fastballs
but generated just four whiffs and a 17% CSW rate from among his 78 pitches
he threw 35-40 pitches to a pair of hitters from High-A Everett and “felt awesome.” He could begin a rehab stint as soon as this weekend
either with Tacoma or Everett due to their proximity to Seattle
and will build up his pitch count to the point where he can handle five innings
Kirby’s spot in the rotation is currently being filled by Emerson Hancock
who was lit for six runs in two-thirds of an inning in his first start on March 31
who scuffled in his 12-start stint with the Mariners last year (4.75 ERA
allowing four runs in 11 innings while striking out 11 in starts in Cincinnati and Boston
During Hancock’s brief exile to Tacoma, his spot in the rotation was filled by Luis F. Castillo, which isn’t what you call this guy when he makes a great start or pitches his way out of a jam with an emphatic strikeout
The Castillo in question is a 30-year-old righty who spent 11 seasons beating the bushes before making three appearances for the Tigers in 2022
and then took a two-season detour to Japan
where he pitched for the Chiba Lotte Marines and the Orix Buffaloes
seven runs allowed (six earned) and seven walks
As for “the real” Castillo — who early in his career had to escape the shadow of his namesake second baseman — he’s pitched to a 3.63 ERA and 3.93 FIP in a staff-high 32.1 innings thus far
His performance contains all kinds of warning signs
starting with an average four-seam velocity that’s dipped to 94.8 mph
and 97.1 in ’22); by both Stuff+ and PitchingBot
His strikeout rate has plummeted to 19.7% and his walk rate has risen to 9.9%; his 9.9% strikeout-to-walk differential is less than half what it was two years ago (20.3%)
they’ve hit him for a 90.3 mph average exit velocity
which may help to explain Tuesday’s walk total
He also noted that he dealt with minor arm soreness earlier this month.]
Bryan Woo has been the team’s best starter this side of Gilbert
He’s gained nearly a full tick on his four-seamer (95.7 mph
and the pitch has become one off the majors’ most effective thanks in part to the deception created by his low arm slot (27 degrees)
Batters have hit just .154 and slugged .288 against it thus far while whiffing on 32.5% of their swings (10th among pitchers with at least 100 four-seamers thrown)
His walk rate has just about doubled over his 2024 rate as well
though the jump from an otherworldly 2.8% to a still-impressive 5.5% isn’t a big deal
particularly when it’s offset by improved strikeout and home run rates
We can probably expect that offense to regress somewhat
if not all the way to the dire state of the pre-shuffle squad
So long as Gilbert and Kirby are able to return as planned
this team has a solid chance at a division title (44.6%
per our Playoff Odds) or at least a Wild Card berth (29.1%)
but we’ll see if that plan and those performances hold up
One of these names doesn’t look like the others and probably shouldn’t have gotten this many starts (Mikolas)
“He’s been one of the game’s most durable starters in recent years
with 103 starts since the start of the 2022 season
tied with Aaron Nola for fourth in the majors
Dylan Cease and Miles Mikolas (both 104)”
It turns out that the “Gilbert Goons” are not only a predator gang of mostly well-off teens who attacked innocent victims in the East Valley
culminating in the killing of 16-year-old Preston Lord and leading to seven murder charges being filed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office
It turns out that the goons are also — heaven help us — an inspiration
An article by The Arizona Republic’s Maritza Dominguez describes an ugly, 60-page police report detailing how park rangers in Mesa formed their own “Goon Squad,” complete with embroidered patches
was arrested on April 22 on suspicion of possession of a stolen firearm
which the report said he found in the backpack of a homeless man
said they were “deeply disturbed by the preliminary findings."
added that the city has “zero tolerance for this type of misconduct.”
“The actions uncovered during this investigation do not reflect Mesa’s values or the standards we expect from public servants.”
They do say something about society’s values and standards
Opinion: 'Gilbert Goons' problem is much wider than we think
The behavior of this particular batch of goons
wasn’t deemed to be prosecutable by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office
The prosecutor’s office told The Republic that the case was “turned down due to no reasonable likelihood of conviction.”
the city is conducting an independent investigation of misconduct
And it has decided as well to transfer command of the 16-person park rangers unit from the Parks
Recreation and Community Facilities Department to the Mesa Police Department
in order “to ensure appropriate oversight and professional standards are maintained.”

Martinez's MRI reveals no structural damage in shoulderMay 3rd
PHILADELPHIA -- The Diamondbacks received some good news Saturday when an MRI taken of closer Justin Martinez’s shoulder showed no structural damage
Martinez had recently experienced a sharp downturn in velocity, which was a cause for concern for the team, especially since A.J. Puk, who had shared the closing duties with Martinez, has been out with a flexor strain and was recently transferred to the 60-day IL
Martinez was placed on the 15-day IL on Thursday morning
“The 15 days are going to be a well-needed rest for him
and we'll get him back in there throwing as soon as possible,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said
“And hopefully get him back here throwing the way he was.”
The Diamondbacks have a good baseline to judge how things look in Martinez’s shoulder because he underwent an extensive physical process, including an MRI, before he signed his contract extension in March
The news that there was no damage in the shoulder was not particularly surprising given that Martinez never complained of any pain in that area
There are a couple of theories as to what could have caused the velocity drop
One is what pitchers refer to as a “dead arm” which is when there is a loss of strength in the shoulder without an injury
“And if you talk to every pitcher that's pitched in this game
dead arm happens towards the end of Spring Training
When he first started experiencing some of that fatigue in the shoulder
Martinez increased the exercises he does to strengthen the shoulder which perhaps contributed to the additional loss of velocity he experienced
honestly,” Martinez said two days before he went on the IL
“I just feel like I’ve been working too much on my shoulder and I was probably doing too much work
That’s why maybe I was throwing that velocity there
It’s also possible that Martinez was hesitant to throw full out given the uncertainty with what was going on with his shoulder
Now that he has the imaging to show that there’s nothing structurally wrong
Lovullo said it was possible that Martinez could begin throwing lightly as soon as Monday
which would seem to indicate that he won’t be out for very long

GILBERT, AZ — Next month will mark five years since Nick Cordova was shot and killed inside his Gilbert air conditioning business
Nick was on FaceTime with his kids when his business partner told police two men came into the business
The Cordova family continues to have different questions about the investigation
hoping it will lead to answers in his case
"It's been five years of a nightmare," said Nick's mom
was a night that started with a FaceTime call and ended with a 911 call made by Alysha
and someone came in and started like beating him," said Alysha
Alysha described her husband as the "most amazing father" and someone who would help anyone
police released a video of a possible suspect from a nearby gas station
and we are just very frustrated with the investigation and how it's going," said Theresa
"Everything we are being told is pretty much the same thing we were told right after this happened," said Nick's sister Cherie Quick
In the last few months, the Cordova family has taken to social media to raise awareness about their loved one's case. They have also worked to raise the Silent Witness reward
even speaking out at the Gilbert Town Council
Watch ABC15's previous coverage on Cordava's case in the player above
"We've let them have their time to give us answers for the last four years and now we’re just tired of it," said Quick
The family feels there is more that the Gilbert Police could do
they have been asking why surveillance video from inside Nick's business was never released
Alysha only recently saw that video personally after pushing police
But she is currently still waiting on records requests
the community jumped into action as the family launched a phone tree on Tuesday
why don’t we have everyone call in on a specific day and just flood the Gilbert PD phone lines," said Alysha
Gilbert Police said in a statement they are working with state and federal agencies
but wouldn’t tell us who or what specific work has been done recently on the case
We read one of the statements police sent to the Cordova family
which said Gilbert PD was following up on all leads and staying in constant communication with their family
"They have not been in constant communication with us."
The family says they have been able to meet with the Police Chief
but expect more when it comes to communication and follow-up
"So if Gilbert PD thinks that if they just keep saying things to us to try and keep us quiet
the family said they'll never be done making "Noise for Nick"
ABC15 has reached out to Nick's business partner to see if he would sit down for an interview
He told our team it was a "horrible situation"
Ultimately he turned down the interview request
Read Gilbert Police's most recent statement on the case below
The Gilbert Police Department is actively investigating Nicolas Cordova’s case
we’d like to emphasize that our detectives continue to actively investigate this case and have been in regular communication with his family throughout the investigation
While we cannot disclose further information at this time
as it may jeopardize our investigation and any potential prosecution
the Gilbert Police Department stands firmly with the Cordova Family and the community in the pursuit of justice for Nicolas
We recognize these senseless acts of violence have been extremely difficult for the Cordova Family
and we are dedicated to sharing as much information as we can in a responsible manner."

BUMP AND STACY
8:11 AM | Updated: 8:15 am
The Seattle Mariners have faced a number of tough blows health-wise early this year
and the recent injury to Logan Gilbert is right at the top of the list
Seattle Mariners Roster Moves: Dylan Moore to IL, utility man called up
left Friday’s game against the Miami Marlins after just three innings with a flexor strain in his right elbow
an injury that can be a precursor to UCL issues
He landed on the 15-day injured list the following day
Both Gilbert and the club have expressed optimism after imaging done Saturday showed a mild (Grade 1) strain
but he’ll be out for at least two weeks
and the club will re-evaluate the injury at that point
the rotation is now without him and 2023 All-Star George Kirby
During a conversation with Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy on Tuesday, Mariners color analyst and former MLB pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith discussed Gilbert’s injury and how the pitching staff has had a different identity this season
it was just this like black cloud of no energy at all around that team because
that’s your guy,” Rowland-Smith said
“That’s your guy who goes 200-plus innings
all those things beyond the stuff (in his pitching arsenal) that really matter and make a difference on the team
Gilbert has been an incredibly durable arm for the Mariners
This is his first IL stint since making his MLB debut in May 2021
and he’s made at least 32 starts in each of the past three seasons
which includes tossing a league-high 208 2/3 innings last season
Gilbert’s durability and the optimism expressed after initial imaging was done on his elbow could indicate that the injury won’t keep the ace out for too long
But there was a comment Gilbert made that was a little troublesome to Rowland-Smith
Gilbert said he felt some discomfort pregame
and one of the results of that was that he decided not to throw any splitters
The splitter has been the right-hander’s best pitch since he introduced it in 2023
Batters have hit under .200 against it in each season
including .101 off it in 2024 and .067 against it so far in 2025
He had thrown the pitch 22.5% of the time this season entering Friday’s start
“That’s not because he’s facing the Marlins and he thinks he can just dominate them,” Rowland-Smith said of why Gilbert ditched the splitter
that’s because it hurts every time he tries to throw a split
and that’s a pitch that can really mess with that elbow.”
Splitters were long associated with increased risk of UCL injury due to the increased tension the pitch’s grip puts on the elbow, although research hasn’t proven that the pitch leads to more injuries than others
the M’s starting staff hasn’t been the same dominant unit it was a year ago
The club entered Tuesday 14th in starter ERA (3.88)
18th in walks per nine innings (3.38) and 21st in innings pitched (144)
Seattle starters were first in all three categories last season
What’s stuck to Rowland-Smith about the regression is just how much harder Seattle’s starters are having to work to get outs
“It’s a situation where it’s taking you a lot longer
“So the identity of the rotation looks completely different because they’re taking a lot of pitches in at-bats to get outs
but they’ve thrown the fourth-most innings (112 1/3) this year
the bullpen could end up getting used even more
“When you push them a little bit on the depth side of things
when you’re talking about going less (deep in) outings
that’s where they get a little bit more exposed,” Rowland-Smith said
“Until you get a Matt Brash (back from injury) and until you get a Troy Taylor who’s really got his feet underneath him … I think there’s a few holes there.”
