FOXBOROUGH – Aussie’s granddaddies of arena rock
made a triumphant return to the Bay State May 4 with an explosive
which included a two-song encore and FM radio staples from the band’s 50-plus-year career
Billed as the “Power Up Tour” (stylized as “PWR/UP Tour”)
the concert at Gillette Stadium certainly lived up to its name
no matter how you spelled it.Playing to a packed grid-iron of multi-generational concertgoers
battery-operated devil horns on top of their heads that were selling like hotcakes at the merch table for $25 a pop
AC/DC came barreling out of the starting gate with “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)” from 1979’s “Highway to Hell.”
Singer Brian Johnson came out with his arms over his head
it seemed apropos because it was a win that he was even there and the band is still together and touring in the first place
after the alcohol poisoning death of Bon Scott
the longest and most popular singer for the Australian rockers
But AC/DC’s future seemed uncertain when Johnson was sidelined in 2016 due to doctor’s orders that he risked losing what little remained of his hearing
wearing a sleeveless black Harley-Davidson jersey
He belted out tune after tune celebrating the band's love for loud music
getting loaded and punching up Lucifer’s coordinates on the GPS
While he is truly the perfect front man for AC/DC
Johnson would probably be just another struggling British pub singer if it weren't for the guitar god from down under
And Angus was playing at nuclear strength capacity from the get-go at Gillette
Wearing a blue velvet schoolboy uniform with matching jacket and shorts
a yellow baseball cap with the letter “A” and a fat stripe-tie that dangled beyond his inseam
Young came barreling on the stage like he was shot out of a cannon
and he did so until the very end when they were actually firing real-life cannons
With a stack of Marshall amps towering behind him
Young paraded out onstage while playing his guitar with aplomb
almost like he was the Pied Piper of high decibels and heavy metal
Rounding out the band (and standing much further back) were rhythm guitarist Stevie Young
who died in 2017 (although Stevie Young has been playing with AC/DC since 2014)
By the time the band got to its second number
crowd-pleaser “Back in Black,” AC/DC already proved that it was back
gargling with razor blade-like vocals were perfectly matched with Angus Young's scorching guitar riffs
Not only did the two show that they’re still a rock ‘n’ roll force to be reckoned with
AC/DC proved why it is arguably one of the greatest stadium band's to rock the earth
Sprinkled between the hard-rocking classics were two enjoyable enough numbers from 2020’s “Power Up” (“Demon Fire” and “Shot in the Dark”) and two more from the 2000s (2000’s “Stiff Upper Lip” and 2008’s “Rock ‘n’ Roll Train”)
the songs were all classic from AC/DC’s ‘70s heyday through ’81
AC/DC seemed to be taunting the weather gods above with an electrifying “Thunderstruck.” Shedding his jacket before shredding on the six-string
Angus Young brought the song to an explosive climax
As a giant bell with the AC/DC logo was lowered from the rafters
it was time for — you guessed it — “Hells Bells," aka the best heavy metal song about hearing ominous ringing in one’s ears (Sorry
Young scorched his fretboard like a man possessed
His heat-emitting precision playing was enough to singe anyone’s eyebrows that were pressed against the stage
while Johnson’s was singing at his bile-spewing best
The evening’s perfect one-two punch came in the form of two back-to-back
Sporting devil’s horns sprouting from his forehead
Young delivered the song’s snarly guitar groove while doing his doing his Aussie-version of Chuck Berry’s infamous duckwalk on “Highway to Hell,” while the audience head-bang and harmonized with Johnson in unison
Even more thrilling than “Highway to Hell” was “Shoot to Thrill,” where the rhythm section was given permission and plenty of room to fuel the song with a fierce backbeat
“Sin City” from 1978’s “Powerage” was a deliciously decadent ditty
Not only did Angus provide the song with an arsenal of big
he delivered a killer lead on his heavily amped guitar by slamming the frets with his Windsor knotted necktie
Let’s see so-called guitar god Jimmy Page do that
Committing acts of mischief for fun and profit never sounded as appealing as AC/DC’s “Dirty Deed Done Dirty Cheap.” After losing his necktie and opening his untucked white shirt
Angus seemed to be re-energized as he started head-banging and wailing on his guitar like a little kid
While his guitar grooves got down and dirty in the song’s nitty gritty
there was never anything that was cheap about “Dirty Deeds.”
“You Shook Me All Night Long,” is also arguably AC/DC’s greatest song and easily one of rock ‘n’ roll’s best
In addition to knocking the crowd out with a tale about “American thighs,” the massive sing-along also boasted Johnson’s best vocals
After a rocking and rambunctious “Whole Lotta Rosie,” there was a whole lot of Angus Young to take in
"Let There Be Rock," served as another solid showcase of Angus' massive guitar playing
This tour de force on the fret board had Angus playing front and center
delivering bone-crunching guitar riffs and roaring guitar solos
all of which were mesmerizing and awe-inspiring
While whipping the crowd of 42,000 in a frenzy
while contorting his mouth into an “O” during this 20-minute
all-out Blitzkrieg on his battle axe that needlessly ended with confetti cannons going off
“For Those About to Rock (We Salute You),” AC/DC’s production team rolled out working cannons
the big guns were still Angus’ guitar playing and Johnson’s howling vocals
Fronted by former child actor-turn-rock goddess
Taylor Momsen was a combination rock ‘n’ roll pinup and powder-keg performer onstage during the band’s explosive 55-minute
No longer the Cindy Lou Who character she played in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” or the thankless kid sister on “Gossip Girl,” Momsen has grown up to be a bonafide rockstar
Wearing a white slip under a black leather biker jacket and sporting black raccoon eyeliner
blond bombshell proved that she can rock with the guys and still be feminine to boot
Commanding the stage like she was the second coming of Cherie Currie
Momsen didn't let her petite frame or her good looks get into the way of convincingly belting out her heavy-duty rock
who was an uncanny resemblance to Alan Rickman’s Severus Snape character in the “Harry Potter” movies
certainly was a star pupil in the Tony Iommi School of heavy metal guitar riffage
Phillips provided a fire-and-brimstone foundation for Momsen to unleash her impassioned cries and heart-wrenching growls on a series of ferocious
dysfunctional relationship and breakup ditties with warm and fuzzy titles that include “Death By Rock and Roll,” “Follow Me Down,” “Witches Burn,” “Make Me Wanna Die” “Going to Hell” and “Take Me Down.”

There were indications this many decades down the road that AC/DC was slowing down, but only indications. Angus Young’s prismatic opening riff of “Thunderstruck” was a hair sluggish – the song picked up noticeably after the pause announcing the arrival of the song’s title – and the guitarist’s madman stage moves were doled out in smaller, discrete chunks. And Johnson was largely garbled and incomprehensible, both during the songs and between them.
And it didn’t matter. The singer was audible enough to fill his role and the guitarist was impish enough to still throw off sparks. The sound itself was resilient enough for “Back In Black” to hit like a hammer, “Whole Lotta Rosie” to swing like a wrecking ball and the guitars themselves to sound rude in the gleefully self-deprecating “Shot Down In Flames.” Even the newest songs, 2020’s “Demon Fire” and “Shot In The Dark,” did exactly what AC/DC songs need to do.

#VetResourcesVets Experience
When Mary Pederson came in to work on March 11
Pederson is a guest services associate at Gillette Stadium
was the site for hundreds of Veterans and their families attending the New England Veteran Experience Action Center
VA and other Veteran organizations were there to help Veterans and their families get one-on-one services
Pederson is the surviving spouse of an Army helicopter pilot who was wounded during the Vietnam War and passed from his service-connected disability in 2021
When staff at the event got wind of her circumstances and her husband’s service and eligibility
the team took action and started Pederson on the path to receive survivor benefits
“It will be life changing for me if I have added income right now,” she said
Everything has gone up and I can’t keep up with it
Something like this benefit is going to change my life
I wish there were more events like this so you can have that connection and you know someone is there to listen and help.”
The New England Veteran Experience Action Center
was modeled after a similar event held last year
particularly because so many Veterans attended last year
Attendees seamlessly moved from VA benefits assistance to VA health care offerings
onto a full resource fair that showcased 54 agencies.Veterans and their families were able to connect directly with 15 VA resources
14 federal and state programs from Massachusetts and Rhode Island
and 24 Veteran Service Organizations or non-profit agencies that serve the community in ways VA and other government agencies cannot
To serve nearly 1,000 Veterans and their families in two days
VA staffed the event from facilities in Boston
Staff from VA’s Veterans Experience Office supported with direct outreach to eligible Veterans in the area and other event assistance
From VetCenters to state departments of Veterans Affairs
The goal is to align VA and the community around the Veteran
“I loved the event; they treated me like I was the boss,” said Stenard Ross
who served in the Army National Guard and Reserve from 1982-2015
He deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 104th Infantry Regiment and 2nd Infantry Division
I learned about the VA home loan and I’m planning to use it.”
Bill at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston where he earned a degree in business
He’s used VA health care since he got out of the military and is no stranger to VA benefits and services
“There are just tons of people who were able to help me at this event,” said Veteran Donald Gale
“They reconstructed my medical and military records
They’re now completed and part of the VA system because of the help I received here
I’m so thankful because it’s like a completion of my life
I can’t thank everybody enough for helping me do something that’s probably 10 years to try to do
VA is hosting these one-on-one events across the country
working with community partners and directly inviting eligible Veterans and their families to attend

What is the VA doing to preclude cutbacks either reducing benefits and/or services
I use Community Services for checking my pace maker
So here’s my question when I use to go to the Milwaukee VA I would pick up the newsletter with pointers on health
My wife found out she has Lupus and by reading the article on Lupus she learned how to live with it
I wish you might be able to print and paste those health articles
We use to go twice a year for our physical’s and we would pick those health articles up and read them and very informative
Now we only go annually if we don’t have a problem
We would look forward to going and shopping and eating there
The VA is the best you health care on the planet .My wife says everyone up there is so nice and thoughtful I agree
Your always thanking us veterans for our service well I’m sure I speak for those who can’t

Rough rendering of what completed project along Fort Point Channel could look like
Gillette today filed its plans for the best its South Boston campus can be: 20 buildings
with a total of 5.7 million square feet of space housing everything from residential units and hotel rooms to offices and lab space
Gillette outlined its idea for the future of World Shaving Headquarters - which will be torn down as assembly lines are moved to Andover - in a "planned development area" filing with the Boston Planning Department
Gillette has been making razors and related items at the site along Fort Point Channel since it moved there from Atlantic Avenue in 1905; the company will keep its corporate offices and R&D in Boston
would let Gillette and the city toss out the 31-acre site's current zoning and set an overall outline for more detailed building-by-building proposals
Gillette started the filing by saying it will likely hand off parts of the actual development
The company says the height of the buildings is limited not by imagination
but by requirements set by the FAA due to the proximity of Logan Airport and a desire not to impose too much on neighbors - so the tallest buildings could reach 320 feet
but only 225 feet near Richards and Necco streets
the residential buildings would consist of at least 1.7 million square feet of space; office
hotel and retail space nearly 4 million square feet
Much of the public space - some 6.5-acres - would be concentrated in a park along 1,200 feet of frontage on Fort Point Channel - and will be designed to block and limit flooding from the channel based on expected sea-level rise for the year 2070
The design of Waterfront Park will introduce a new elevated Harborwalk route near the waterfront extending along the entire waterfront perimeter of the Project Site
connecting the existing Harborwalk to the north with Dorchester Avenue to the west
is intended to remain as a redundant route along the seawall immediately adjacent to the water
The new Open Spaces are envisioned as an integrated series of urban spaces with distinct programmatic elements and functions comprising a mix of publicly accessible open spaces
all designed to provide provocative view corridors through the Project Site and toward other points of interest in the vicinity of the Proposed Project
this flexible and multi-use open space network will provide a balance of passive and active recreation that caters to a wide variety of user demographics
which would include a series of flood walls and berms and which hinges on federal funding - at a time when the federal government is under the control of people who deny climate change and hate pretty much everything Boston stands for
Individual buildings on the site would have key components built above the anticipated level of major flooding in the decades to come under the proposal
West 1st and Necco streets into the site - where they will connect with new "secondary streets" that will include bike lanes
will provide cyclists and pedestrians with connections with no vehicular traffic from surrounding neighborhoods to the core of the Project Site and the waterfront
the car-free corridors will include a broad open space connection providing improved pedestrian and bike connections from the Project Site to the Broadway MBTA Red Line station
The proposal calls for garages with space for 4,489 cars - or 2,691 more than can now be accommodated by Gillette's current parking lots
Also proposed: long-term indoor storage for 3,334 bicycles and public bike racks with room for 592 bikes
Gillette Redevelopment filings and meeting/comment schedule
Possible view from the end of Fort Point Channel towards the harbor; downtown on the left

previously unthinkable things as our liberties and financial stability vanish rapidly
So it's almost comforting if not quaint that a company is still proposing new lab and office space as if it's still 2019
The number of parking spaces is atrocious but otherwise it's better use of the space vs manufacturing
In all likelihood it's going to get approved and nothing will actually happen
In 5-10 years another proposal will be made

At the same time the hospitality industry braces for a slowdown of international visitors this summer, Rhode Island leaders are preparing for an influx of foreign fans when the World Cup soccer tournament kicks off in 2026
Gillette Stadium in Foxboro
is one of 16 North American venues to host World Cup matches next June
and General Treasurer James Diossa wants to make sure Rhode Island takes advantage of an opportunity he estimates could be worth as much as $50 million in economic activity
Diossa is leading a working group of public- and private-sector leaders to plan and raise money for the event in Rhode Island
"What we've done so far is we've had multiple meetings
just to start thinking about the World Cup
"How do you prepare municipal budgets for the potential number of visitors that are going to come to our state?"
The first step probably will be a request for money
Dan McKee about finding some in the state budget
Diossa thinks Rhode Island could use between $4 million and $5 million of combined public and private funds for the World Cup
"They will continue having conversations," Diossa spokesman Wilder Arboleda said after the meeting on whether McKee is planning to ask lawmakers for funding
What will RI get out of a soccer tournament in Massachusetts? The biggest Rhode Island beneficiaries from large sporting events at Gillette Stadium tend to be hotels in Providence that are slightly closer to Foxboro than downtown Boston
carnival nature of the World Cup could spread the benefits more broadly to Rhode Island businesses and attractions
To make the case for spending state money on planning for the tournament, Diossa had Bryant University economist Edinaldo Tebaldi calculate the economic impact of the World Cup in Rhode Island, based on the estimated effect of the Army-Navy college football game in December 2023
The Army-Navy game was attended by 65,878 people and generated an estimated $3.1 million of economic activity in Rhode Island
Boston World Cup organizers estimate 450,000 people will watch seven games in Foxboro
and Tebaldi projects that based on the Army-Navy results
the World Cup would generate between $25 million and $30 million in direct economic activity
On top of that there could be between $45.7 million and $54.8 million in indirect economic activity
'Inundated' by soccer fansBut it won't all be parties and watching the money roll in
Rhode Island Emergency Management Director Marc Pappas briefed a state emergency advisory board on what government agencies might have to do to host several thousand boisterous soccer fans from around the globe
He told the group there is a possibility that in addition to the attendees of matches in Foxboro
Rhode Island could receive international visitors planning to watch their team play in New York and Philadelphia
"If you look at the corridor between Boston and New York and Philly
we are sitting in the middle of that on the rail line and bus line and think a lot of people will set up shop in Rhode Island and romp up and down wherever the games are played
which would overwhelm us on the safety and security piece
"We think we are going to get inundated with a large group of folks coming in to see these games," he added
the tourism industry would probably welcome a horde of international visitors
with international travel to the United States this summer expected to drop due to new stricter border entry policies
Officially speaking, Boston is the host city for the World Cup matches in Foxboro, and there is a Boston 2026 host committee to work on event planning with FIFA
the international organization that runs the tournament
So the big decisions will flow through Boston
including whether there will be an officially sanctioned fan festival in Providence
These Fan Fests typically have a big screen showing matches in a central location
"We won't know until probably end of the year," Diossa said about whether there will be officially sanctioned events in Providence. "I think it'd be ideal to do it in Providence, connected to WaterFire and different activities in the area."
Mayor Brett Smiley has proposed $250,000 for World Cup preparations in his budget for next year
Asked specifically what the money would be spent on
city spokesperson Michaela Antunes said it would go "towards supporting safe activations here in Providence."
the City is working to determine how the municipality can best support
while anticipating that local and regional events will likely draw thousands of visitors to the area," she wrote in an email
"To prepare for that type of multiweek activation
the City is working across departments and with state partners to better understand the event's impact in Providence and how we can bring people from across the globe to visit and enjoy our city."
the teams competing in the World Cup need to practice somewhere
and at least two Rhode Island locations − at the University of Rhode Island and Bryant University − have been considered as team "bases."
URI this year took itself out of consideration as a base when the scale of what would be required became clear
"URI's decision not to move forward reflects a number of complex factors
including the timing of our new student orientation in June
long-standing commitments to host local high school graduations
and logistics related to major construction projects planned near the Ryan Center," university spokesperson Dawn Bergantino wrote in an email
the terms outlined in the proposed contract present financial and logistical challenges that
we are unable to confidently accommodate as a public land-grant institution."
The Journal is still awaiting an answer from Bryant as to whether it might still serve as a World Cup base
The World Cup is played on grass fields, so teams generally do not want to train on artificial turf like the field at the new Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket.
What would the state money be used for?Diossa said funding could be used to help pay police overtime and public works staff as well as to put on events
Getting fans from Providence to Foxboro is also on Rhode Island officials' agenda
The MBTA often runs special commuter trains to Gillette Stadium on New England Patriots game days
and that would be an option for World Cup transportation
but that would again be a decision made in Boston
although most international travelers will probably come through New York or Boston

Gillette has been making razor blades in South Boston
the company is preparing to make something quite different there: a whole new neighborhood
P&G Gillette on Friday filed a long-awaited master plan with city officials for its 31-acre campus along the southern edge of the channel, a block or so from the Broadway T station on the Red Line. It’s the latest milestone in the company’s efforts to redo its two Massachusetts sites
as it pulls its manufacturing work out of South Boston to make way for this ambitious 20-building redevelopment
Much of the manufacturing will shift to Gillette’s other local property
with a groundbreaking scheduled to take place on that expansion next Thursday
The 5.7-million-square-foot development in South Boston could take a decade or more to fully build out
The total vision includes 1,800 housing units across nine buildings
and another 3.5 million square feet of commercial space for offices and labs as well as 200,000 square feet of shops and restaurants and 250,000 square feet of hotel space
The buildings would range in height from four or five stories
to taller buildings such as a 320-foot-high residential tower near the T station
The project also includes a 6.5-acre public park along the channel
“We’ve long been proud of our heritage here in Massachusetts,” said Kara Buckley
vice president of community affairs at Gillette
“We’re excited about the legacy we could leave behind through this plan.”
though it’s possible they could remain on the property as it gets redeveloped
The fundamental real estate shifts were first announced in October 2023
Gillette has sought feedback from the public
holding 15 community meetings over the past two years and working with development consultant Leggat McCall
and others to design this new neighborhood
but so will most new individual buildings at a later date
CBT urban design director Kishore Varanasi said the master plan is designed to link with other improvements along the channel
as well as open up new streets through the fenced-off campus to the waterfront
was “to not think of this as an enclave in its own right but a pretty significant piece of a larger puzzle.”
Varanasi said most of the site will be raised up by at least six feet and will also feature an extension of a berm planned for that side of the channel
Much of the property is covered by the state’s Chapter 91 tidelands law
which limits how much can be built near the water
half of the 31 acres would be open to the public
Gillette also wants to ensure the redevelopment includes spaces for civic and cultural uses
To Kate Dineen, chief executive of business group A Better City, the Gillette master plan addresses key city priorities such as building more mixed-income housing, climate resiliency, and more public waterfront access. In particular, she cited the waterfront park as a “marquee investment” for the city. (Buckley is a vice chair on ABC’s board.)
“An important element of feedback they received from the community [is] they don’t want cookie-cutter development,” Dineen said
I think you see that represented across this master plan.”
