The University of North Georgia (UNG) launched its first What Comes Next Hub on Feb
Located about a half hour from UNG's Blue Ridge Campus
this hub is a dedicated resource center designed to empower students and their families with the tools
knowledge and resources needed to successfully transition from Gilmer High School to the next step in their educational and professional journeys
UNG President Michael Shannon also announced that Gilmer High seniors currently dual-enrolled at UNG will receive a $1,000 scholarship if they enroll at UNG for fall 2025
and it's not really about the University of North Georgia
It's not just about this community," Shannon said
"It's for every student who dreams of a brighter future
every student who dreams of what comes next."
Shannon mentioned how a counselor at his high school told him he didn't have what it took to attend college
he hopes the hub provides the opposite message
inspiring students to step boldly into their calling
"I want to show that college isn't just a privilege
but it's a pathway to opportunity for everyone," he said
The What Come Next Hub will offer personalized assistance in areas such as college admissions
By fostering strong partnerships with local businesses
and higher education partners Dalton State College and Chattahoochee Technical College
the hub will help students and their families every step of the way as they navigate and plan for their next step after graduation
"There's a lot of things we can do in a high school environment
but one of the greatest things we can do is try to empower our kids to go to the next step," Gilmer High School Principal Derek T
" And it looks different for every student
and that's what we want them to understand."
the hub aims to strengthen the future workforce
promote post-secondary enrollment and create opportunities for Gilmer High School students as they prepare for what comes next
Kayla Valle, UNG Upward Bound advisor at Gilmer High, is a 2021 Gilmer High graduate and 2024 UNG graduate with a degree in human services delivery and administration
she was part of Upward Bound through UNG while a student at Gilmer High
Upward Bound's mission is to help underrepresented and underserved students prepare for
enroll and graduate from institutions of higher learning
UNG's Upward Bound program serves students from Gilmer High and Johnson High School
a university that fully believes in programs like Upward Bound
I felt a deep sense of gratitude and purpose
I have the honor of serving as a senior advisor for the very program that changed my life
I work with high school seniors who are now walking the same path I once did
helping them complete college applications
creating Federal Student Aid IDs and creating workshops that inspire and empower them," Valle said
"Now with initiatives like the What Comes Next Hub
we have opportunities to expand these efforts by creating more resources for mentorship and community support
We can inspire the next generation of students to break barriers
pursue higher education and transform their futures."
The hub ties into UNG's strategic big bets to design and build a Leadership Foundry, supercharge workforce development, and expand the STEM value proposition

CHARLESTON — The old adage in basketball is defense wins championships
Gilmer County head coach Amy Chapman’s program put on a record-breaking performance here Friday evening in the single-A state semifinals as the Titans allowed just two made field goals on 46 attempts (4.3%) en route to a 48-16 blowout of Cameron
who saw their defense set an all-class state tournament record for field goal percentage defense which was previously held by Huntington St
Joe back in 2016 when the Irish limited Richwood to 12.8% (6 of 47)
“I think our defense definitely showed up again tonight,” said coach Chapman
whose Titans led 25-2 after one and watched Cameron finally crack double digits with a pair of late foul shots in the third quarter from Maci Neely
“We forced Cameron out of their comfort zone and forced them to take some contested shots
“A lot of our offense is created through our defense so it was good to get some easy looks down the floor
We ran the floor well and made pretty good decisions with the basketball
and did a pretty good job of executing offensively with the plays and getting it inside.”
who graduated four seniors off last year’s squad which became the first public school to three-peat in single-A after handing the Titans a 50-43 setback
but these girls are going to be fine,” admitted coach Pettit
whose team got outscored 28-3 in the paint and 21-4 on points off turnovers
“We knew what we were getting into when we got the fourth seed
“We don’t have anybody over 5-9
We knew that we were outsized and they are well coached
Unfortunately we didn’t compete as well as we wanted to and our shots weren’t falling
Nobody thought we’d make it to Charleston this year
Ava Dobbins led the way for Gilmer County as the junior pivot went for game-highs of 16 points
a game-high five steals and shared game-high assists honors at three with teammates Lena Frymier and Malory Casteel
“I’m really excited,” Ellyson said of having another chance to cut down the nets
“I’ve been waiting on this for so long
“I’m really excited and I think the team vibes are really good
We’ve worked so hard and we’re just happy to be there tomorrow.”
Freshman Titan Kenley Hartshorn finished with seven points
added 10 rebounds and joined Blair Dobbins with a blocked shot
I’ve had fun with the team,” said Hartshorn
it looked like the Dragons might set the state record for fewest points in a state tournament game
which is still held by South Harrison (15) against Charleston Catholic
“We are just really scrappy on defense and very technical,” added coach Chapman
who got three points apiece from Frymier and Casteel while Laura Brannon and Blair Dobbins had a bucket each
“Defensively I thought we pressured the ball very well
forced them to their off-hand and I thought the next pass away people were out in the passing lane
“We defended the screens well when they came up with a ball screen so we did a pretty good job with the help on that
and the defensive rotations I thought the bigs inside did a great job if it did get past the guards altering shots and being a rim protector.”
Ellyson actually scored all of her markers in the first half as the Titans shot 54.2% (13 of 24) and held a commanding 36-6 intermission advantage
“Worked every day in practice and worked hard all year and this will be another opportunity,” said Ava Dobbins of trying to finish the season on top
Blair Dobbins was joined in grabbing six boards by Frymier while Brannon and Casteel collected five caroms each
which forced five turnovers before the Dragons got off a shot and tallied the first nine points
advanced to the state title game for the third time in four years while Cameron was attempting to reach its fifth straight championship game

CHARLESTON — Top-ranked Gilmer County captured its second Class A state girls basketball championship in school history here Saturday night inside the Charleston Coliseum as the Titans smothered No
2 Tug Valley and snapped the Panthers’ 19-game win streak following a 66-22 domination
who won their first state crown back in 2016 while also owning runner-up finishes in 2001
held the Panthers of head man Seth Ooten to a season-low in scoring
who played in her final game alongside fellow seniors Malory Casteel
was named tournament MVP after she saw 31 minutes of action and produced 18 points and six boards to go along with game-highs of nine assists and five steals
I’ve wanted this for so long,” admitted Ellyson
who shared game-high scoring honors with junior teammate Lena Frymier
“To lose two state championships in three years
I knew that we could come back here and do the same thing but with a different result and that’s what we did
It was just a surreal feeling to be doing this with everybody that I love.”
Ellyson’s layup 1:54 in finally dented the scoreboard as a Kenzie Browning runner 1:27 later knotted the affair for the only time
Ellyson assisted on the first of Frymier’s five 3s to make it 5-2 as the Titans led the rest of the way en route to a 23-4 record
“After I made my first 3 I knew my team was there to hype me up and it just helped lead into the next possession
I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” said Frymier
who chipped in four rebounds and three assists while adding “we will try to come back down here and we’ll just have the best season next year
and just try to make the best of it.”
Pivot Ava Dobbins followed with consecutive deuces and Frymier added a foul shot before a putback by Dobbins had the Panthers in a 12-2 hole late in first which led to a 13-3 cushion after one
“I just make sure to keep my hands up and follow the person with the ball and try not to fall into them
just go straight up and swat it out of the air,” replied Dobbins when asked about her blocking abilities as the junior went for game-highs of 10 stuffs
a baker’s dozen boards and hit 8 of 12 from the field for 16 points
“This is my first triple-double ever
“At first it was like nerve-racking but after that first timeout coach told us to calm down and everybody was a little wild so we calmed down after that and got our offensive flow going and made sure to do our stuff on defense.”
During Tug Valley’s semifinal win the Panthers hit a dozen treys
Tug Valley missed all 11 of its attempts from beyond the arc and shot just 15.6% (10 of 64) from the field as Haven Deskins had the only Panther assist while leading the team with nine points and grabbing nine rebounds
“We definitely keyed in on their guards
We have a very good defensive unit and we definitely have one at the helm
who watched Casteel help keep TVHS leading scorer Kenzie Browning in check to the tune of five markers
At one point she only had one point and every shot she took was a very difficult shot
That was her assignment and she executed it really well
They are very happy with whoever is successful that night and it wasn’t just always one person
It was a total team effort all year and they just knew where the ball needed to go to at certain times of the season
and just defensively they committed to just sitting down and playing good defense all year.”
Laura Brannon’s assist to Blair Dobbins got the Titans going in the second quarter and it was 18-3 with 4:44 to go in the half after Frymier hit from downtown
Tug Valley got a pair of baskets from Bailee Hall
who had six points and tied Ava Dobbins with 13 caroms
as the Panthers cut the deficit to eight following a 7-0 spurt
the Titans ended the half on an 11-0 run to forge a 29-10 halftime bulge
Casteel and Ellyson canned two charity stripe tosses apiece
Ava Dobbins scored twice inside and Frymier drained a 3 after being left open from the top of the key
“I’m telling you we’ve had a defensive effort all year
It showed up this week,” added coach Chapman
whose squad held TVHS to 13.3% (4 of 30) in the opening half
The commitment to defense this week from the young ladies and the execution and just being able to stay with it all week long.”
which won the state crown back in 2021 versus Cameron
couldn’t make up any ground the rest of the way as the Panthers trailed 41-18 entering the fourth
Despite the slow start and having half of their 14 turnovers in the opening quarter
“I think nerves were showing a little bit
Once they settled down we started to do our thing pretty good,” said the coach
who opened her post game press conference by saying “first of all I want to give glory to God and I want to thank my coaching staff
They are wonderful to work with and they bring so much to the table as far as working with our young ladies
They showed up this week and really supported us and supported us all year
Really appreciate everything they have done for us and I especially want to thank these young ladies
They are wonderful young ladies and they absolutely 100,000% deserve being here right now with this trophy
It’s been a great week this week being around them
wonderful leaders and great kids in the community
They are all just wonderful young ladies.”
put the exclamation point on the championship when she capped the scoring via a corner 3 with 1:11 remaining thanks to an Erin Stoddard dime
seven rebounds and had the Titans’ other three blocked shots

“We definitely had a little chip on our shoulder from last time losing in overtime
“We went through a little stretch there where we weren’t really jelling up and were a little Helter Skelter
but we have a really good bond and I think we really pushed together as a team
They have a lot of 6-foot girls and we’re not too tall and their guards are amazing
They are just a really good team and they are a really tough team to beat
It’s always going to be back and forth between us.”

Frymier has a chance to put the Titans ahead for the first time in the game
Davis made a free throw and the final score was set with 18.2 to go when Bulluck made 1 of 2
A potential game-tying triple by Frymier also didn’t find the bottom of the net as the Blue Devils held on
but I give credit to Gilmer,” said Davis
but I was glad we came out on the other side of it
especially having that kind of motivation from last year and just coming back and winning it

“That’s not the kind of game you normally try to set for senior night
but we had Elkins cancel on us and we sent out an email and luckily coach Chapman needed a game and she’d definitely never one to back down from competition and we sort of have the same mindset,” admitted coach Bunch

Pickens eight and Gracie Montgomery seven off the bench
“In a game like that at the end of the year playing the number one team in the state

“They got us here last year and the girls remembered that
That’s the kind of team we want to finish with
We got bigger goals and we want to get ready for the postseason and I feel like bringing a team in here we could beat by 30 or 40 points we wouldn’t have got as much out of it
They are a great team and they are well coached
We still get one more home game next week so it’s not their last home game
but it’s good on senior night they got honored and were able to pull out a win like that against a team like that.”
which led 8-6 after one and 17-13 at halftime

now 18-4 with a home game set for next Friday as the No
1 seed in the Region IV tournament versus the No
made just three field goals in the opening half
Pickens opened the third with a deuce thanks to an Anna Cosner assist and the lead was still six at 21-15 when Burt converted to counter a putback by Laura Brannon
another putback by Blair Dobbins was followed by a Frymier trifecta before Ava Dobbins scored to give the visitors their first lead
who joined Ellyson with six rebounds while finishing with a game-high three blocks
making her lone basket for a 24-21 cushion
Montgomery tied it with a 3 and the hosts went ahead for good at 28-26 thanks to a Bunch deuce
The Titans trailed 30-26 entering the fourth after Makaela Bandy found Haught for a basket with 5 seconds left on the clock
“That’s what we were looking forward to was the challenge,” admitted coach Chapman
who got a game-high five steals from Frymier and a quartet from Ellyson
“This is only going to make us better
There were things that definitely got exposed that we still need to continue to work on
but in the long run I’m positive and the girls are going to stay positive and that’s important right now is just to keep a good head and keep the mindset
Williamstown is a terrific team and that’s why we wanted to play them
I mean we just played great defense other than a few breakdowns
We held that team to under 50 and those post players are huge in there and Pickens is a great inside player
I thought Ava for the most part did a great job on her
I enjoyed it and the girls got better from it so we’re just going to use it as a positive.”
the Titans closed it to one point on three other occasions in the fourth quarter with the last coming at the 3:19 mark when Ellyson had a three-point play
“We got a couple good stops,” coach Bunch said of the difference in the game
“Ellyson started taking over there late and got downhill
but we just didn’t have an answer for her
We just ended up on the right side of the stick
Those two guards up top just put the ball pressure on
I’m glad that we came up on the winning end this time.”
Pickens finished with a game-high seven rebounds while Burt added a trio of steals
