Jasmine Johnson moved into a home next door to a house in the 200 block of Estridge Road in Glasgow Village
that was split in half years ago by a falling tree
“I don’t send my kids outside because I’m afraid of rats,” said Johnson
CLAYTON — Officials want to create a new government agency to address the blight of vacant and abandoned homes in St
But they’re hoping to learn from a similar program in St
Louis that has been overwhelmed by inventory and troubled by corruption
“We’re wanting to make sure we don’t have those issues because there’s so many communities depending on this,” said County Council Chair Shalonda Webb
a Democrat from North County who last week started working on legislation to create a county “land bank.”
Abandoned houses litter north and south St. Louis County
drive down property values and create a cycle that can lead to other homes being abandoned as well
Louis and Kansas City have the power to seize abandoned properties
hold them in land banks and eventually sell the houses
a new state law allows counties across Missouri to do the same
“It really has transformation potential,” said attorney Rachel Waterman of Legal Services of Eastern Missouri
a nonprofit that helped craft the state legislation
When an owner stops paying taxes on a house, the county eventually may try to sell the building at a public tax auction. But those homes often have messy title problems — liens
for instance — that deter investors from buying them
Glasgow Village neighbors say a group of vacant homes in the 10800 block of Spring Garden Drive
Many were set for demolition with pandemic relief funds
with $11 million set to raze or repurpose problem property in North County
people won’t buy it because of all the liens on it,” said Julie Griffith
president of the community association in Spanish Lake
and they burned 10 to 15 years ago and they’re still sitting there
who has lived in Spanish Lake for 24 years
didn’t have the right tools to handle the problem
to use the land bank to zero out debt and clear the title
eliminating some of the risk for a potential investor
But the county wants to avoid some of the city’s pitfalls
In June 2022, the St. Louis aldermanic president and two of his allies were indicted on federal bribery charges that included helping a businessman buy property from the land bank
Aldermen wield influence throughout the city
The city halted sale of land bank properties and only resumed sales after putting new rules in place
The new state law
It prohibits certain people from buying land bank properties: any member of the board that governs a land bank; an employee of the land bank agency; an elected or appointed official of the agency; an elected or appointed official in the political subdivision where the land bank is located; or a person who is related to any of those people
And no public officials may serve on the governing board
It’s not clear if those rules would have stopped the problems in the city. Former Alderman Jeffrey Boyd pleaded guilty to taking bribes in return for helping a businessman purchase property from the city’s land bank
Plenty of details have yet to be worked out
The new law also includes a provision that would help the county avoid another problem the city faces
tax-delinquent property that doesn’t sell at auction goes into the city’s land bank
Louis’ land bank holds thousands of properties and struggles to maintain them
the county would be able to choose which properties it puts in its land bank so it could grow at a reasonable rate
The state law also outlines how the county would appoint a land bank board of directors
It would include seven members: two appointed by the county executive; one by the County Council member with the most tax-delinquent parcels in the area that member represents; one by the council member with the second-most parcels; one agreed upon by the county executive and local municipal league; and two residents
It could be months before the county’s legislation is ready
said she’s prepared to wait years for the land bank program to see the light of day
“It’s a step in the right direction,” Griffith said

Rockvilla CIC intend to provide office and community space on the first floor of the Legacy Hub, with a licenced area on the ground floor supporting both community and external uses. The community interest company will apply for a licence support the hire of the area for weddings, parties, and functions - and intend to use this income to fund the community space above.
The CIC propose to use the theatre area in the Hub to host events such as A Play, a Pie and a Pint with local writers and performers; a free after-school meals club run in connection with Mary's Meals; and to let spaces to local charities or community organisations at concessionary rentals with organisation being responsible for occupational costs. A Community Advisory Board - or similar body - will be formed with the tenants and local community members and representatives involved.
The committee also agreed to change the development agreement for the second phase of the Athletes' Village in Dalmarnock. This second phase - which will see 125 houses built - has a development agreement between Glasgow City Council and the developer consortium City Legacy.
City Legacy has been approached by the Places for People, Thriving Investments, MMR Fund with a view to purchasing 58 homes for mid-market rental. Today's decision to change the development agreement allows that purchase and the acceleration of the development, with construction expected to begin before the end of 2024.
The building of these homes is expected to help meet demand for mid-market rental homes in Glasgow's East End in a period of market constraint. The remaining 77 homes in the second phase will be available for private sale.
The ‘Glasgow West’ store will be to the south of the Hillington Interchange at Junction 26 of the M8, occupying the former Peter Vardy CARZ showroom. The site commands an extremely visible position alongside Hillington Road, forming part of the wider regional centre including IKEA and Braehead Shopping Centre nearby, and next to a cluster of the most prominent car dealerships in Scotland, with Abbotsinch Retail Park only 5 minutes’ drive away.
Charlie Harrison, managing director at Furniture Village, said: “Following the incredible success of our first Scottish store, which opened in Edinburgh in December 2024, we’re excited to announce the opening of our second location — right in the heart of Glasgow this June!
After months of searching for the perfect spot, we couldn’t be happier to have secured a standout site on Hillington Road. Just a mile from Braehead Shopping Centre and highly visible from the M8, it’s a fantastic location to continue our expansion.
This will be our largest store in the UK so far, and we can’t wait to open the doors and welcome the people of Glasgow this summer.”
The family-run business was awarded Retail Family Business of the Year at the 2024 Family Business Awards and continues to be recognised by the Best Companies Awards as a ‘world class business to work for’ with a Trustpilot rating of 5 stars.
The new Glasgow store is set to open mid-June and is located on Hillington Road, a prime location which is visible from the M8 and close to the Abbotsinch Shopping Park.

MENOMONEE FALLS - Trustee Dave Glasgow will become the next village president after defeating Trustee Jeremy Walz in the April 3 election
according to unofficial results Tuesday night
will take over for Village President Joseph Helm on April 17
was elected village president in 2015 and served on the board since 2014.
“I want to give a huge thank-you to the community and a huge thank-you to the residents and businesses for their belief in me," Glasgow said by phone after election results were posted April 3
Glasgow ran on a platform of managing growth in the village and keeping taxes low
He attributed his victory Tuesday night with going door-to-door and meeting voters
“I've been on the board for three years now
and I have just made it a point to put the businesses and the residents first and to get out there,” he said. “We're here to work for them and to resolve their issues.”
RELATED: Menomonee Falls village president candidates name growth as top issue facing the village
The greatest contrast between Glasgow and Walz was their opinion on the four-story Riverwalk on the Falls apartment development being built north of Main Street and east of Grand Avenue, overlooking the Menomonee River and Mill Pond
Walz voted against a nearly $4 million tax incentive package for the developer
which was supposed to be completed by the end of 2017
and the village board voted unanimously last month to push the construction deadline back to May 2019 in exchange for reducing village payments to the developer by $100,000.
The apartment project and contract became a political talking point on social media leading up to the election as a number of Facebook pages became forums for debate
"Menomonee Falls Taxpayer Association," endorsed Walz and questioned Glasgow's honesty in regard to the project after he said during a village board meeting that he received regular updates about Riverwalk
has denied receiving regular updates during village board meetings.
a member of the village's community development authority and plan commission
posted in Glasgow's defense on the "Menomonee Falls Political Discussion" page.
"This development is discussed regularly," Newman wrote on March 31
"We all are very aware of the construction delay issues."

Arlington Heights Trustee Thomas Glasgow announced Monday night that he is stepping down as Village Board Trustee after serving a decade on the village board
Glasgow said his decision is the result of an increased workload as a criminal defense attorney
Glasgow thanked current and former board members
who he described as a group that “speak as one” and that his decision followed much deliberation and give-and-take on the issues that come before them
who was re-elected last year (April 2017) to a 4-year term
announced his decision at the end of the village board meeting Monday
has been given several business opportunities that would conflict with the obligations and time commitments of a village trustee
“Despite what people may say or what they may hear in the news
but I’m proud to have been part of a group that shows respect for one another and for the citizens they represent
We respect each other’s thoughts and opinions
and most of all our board is not afraid of compromise.”
Glasgow’s announcement was made shortly after a dedication ceremony for the new Arlington Heights police station
Glasgow was a strong proponent — calling for the need of the $29 million modern police station
Glasgow sat on a planning committee; and the proposed new police station was part of his campaign while running for trustee
Glasgow said the greatest achievement during his time on the board was the hiring of Village Manager Randy Recklaus
whom he called a “seasoned” manager who implements the policy direction set by the board
Mayor Thomas Hayes praised Glasgow’s service
Glasgow is the defense attorney for former Schaumburg police officer Matthew Hudak
who was convicted of Armed Violence with a Weapon
and Burglary; and is serving 21 years in prison
Thomas Glasgow said earlier this year that he will ask the Illinois Department of Corrections to release Hudak early based on the collapse of a case against a co-defendant
former Schaumburg Police Officer John Cichy
The two Schaumburg police officers and a third Schaumburg police officer were arrested near Woodfield Mall in 2013
The Schaumburg police officers were assigned on a stakeout and suddenly found themselves under arrest after being surrounded by police
They were accused of conspiring to steal drugs from dealers and to sell them for profit through other dealers
Initially there was no confirmation that this case is part of the extra workload required by Glasgow’s firm

East Bank Berbice is now illuminated as the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MPI) has switched on the LED street lights which were installed on July 9 and 10
Residents of Islington are also beneficiaries
according to the Department of Public Information (DPI)
The surrounding villages are also expected to have streetlights installed as the Ministry continues its work in the East Bank Berbice area
Poles and streetlights are already connected in several other villages
The MPI funded project will include reconstruction and widening of the once impassable stretch of road and new concrete bridges replacing wooden ones.Families were seen along the public roads as they “checked out” the new lights
I wouldn’t even walk this road after 6:30p.m
I am very happy our community is now lit up,” Tameka Richards told DPI
a resident of Stanleytown and a Councillor of the New Amsterdam Municipality said the street lights are a very good initiative
He recalled some 35 years ago street lights were set up in the community but not of this quality
He noted the streetlights were installed after residents had made several appeals

A second phase of housing at the Commonwealth Games Athlete's Village in Dalmarnock is to get underway following an agreement between landowners Glasgow City Council and Scottish Power
which operates two electrical substations on the land
The deal means work to deliver 125 terraced brownfield homes can begin later this year
supplementing the 700 flats and houses completed back in 2014
Phase two designs by Stewart Stevenson Architects follow the earlier template with terraced homes lining the established streetscape
This will necessitate re-grading to level steep banked edges from when the site was used as a tented village
Councillor Ruari Kelly commented: “The Athletes’ Village was a landmark development for Dalmarnock and the East End of Glasgow
bringing high-quality for sale and social rent to the area and was a catalyst for the wider and ongoing regeneration of this part of the city
The approval of the development agreement would allow the construction of the second phase of the development to begin
with all the economic and social benefits this will bring to Glasgow.”
Each timber kit property will be manufactured off-site and include roof-integrated solar panels
Landscpaed linear parkland skirts the western boundary of the village.
