Council says cost running into tens of millions
as homeless refugees granted asylum across UK come to city for support
The asylum system risks “damaging social cohesion” with homeless refugees putting “unprecedented pressure” on Glasgow services
the largest asylum dispersal area outside London
But the “unique” circumstances of Scotland’s stronger housing rights
such as a statutory duty to accommodate single adult males
combined with the last Conservative government’s changes to batch-processing claims
means “the current cost to the city is running into the tens of millions
The Guardian has previously reported how the number of homeless refugees in Glasgow rose steeply as the Home Office accelerated its plan to clear the asylum backlog before last year’s general election
hundreds of people who received their asylum decision elsewhere in the UK have come to Glasgow to access homelessness services there
More than half of those in the city’s temporary accommodation are from households that have been granted leave to remain
While the incoming Labour government extended the notice period for refugees to exit Home Office accommodation to eight weeks
it can take months for them to receive the documentation required to secure alternative
affordable accommodation and for their universal credit claims to be processed
Casey warned: “Obviously the numbers of referrals of people recently granted leave to remain is rising and
if the UK government doesn’t compensate the council
with bad actors pointing to budgetary decisions and saying ‘that’s because of asylum seekers and refugees’
During a recent city council byelection, the Reform UK candidate was accused of spreading misinformation after he claimed a former care home had been proposed as a hostel for asylum seekers
Casey said the council now wanted to “work with the UK government to discuss some potential solutions
and our commitment to being a pilot area for people seeking asylum to work”
More than 1,000 people from elsewhere in the UK – coming from cities such as Belfast
Manchester and Birmingham – have come to Glasgow since February 2024 to access homelessness support
but also by the city’s strong record of integration and established migrant communities
The council is eager to meet the UK government’s asylum minister, Angela Eagle
Last week Casey wrote directly to Eagle asking for a face-to-face opportunity to discuss what he describes as the “utterly untenable” pressures that the city administration is facing as part of the ongoing changes to asylum dispersal
“Glasgow is the largest dispersal area in the UK
and we currently house over 4,000 asylum seekers here
and [the housing services provider] Mears have capacity for over 7,000,” he wrote
“This is putting unprecedented pressure on our housing system
We will continue to believe that asylum dispersal is good for our city
But the system you are presiding over is damaging social cohesion here
and we want to meet with you to discuss that.”
The letter pointed out that the circumstances in Glasgow were unique “because of Scotland’s world leading homelessness legislation”
“We want to discuss these issues with you in person so that we can
come to an agreed way forward which continues Glasgow’s proud history as a dispersal city
while balancing the ongoing needs of our communities
and which funds us appropriately for the impact that your decisions are having.’
A government spokesperson said: “We have implemented a pilot scheme to double the move-on period
allowing newly recognised refugees 56 days to move on from the point they are served their grant of leave
while also supporting local authorities as this government clears the asylum backlog
“There is a clear need for a smooth transition between asylum accommodation and other accommodation for asylum seekers granted leave to remain
which is why we are working to identify and implement efficiencies to support this process and mitigate the risk of homelessness.”
The tenements at Clune Park in the town of Port Glasgow were built a century ago as housing for shipyard workers but many have lain empty for decades
A stand-off between private landlords and the local council has thwarted redevelopment
leaving the site frozen in time with just a handful of tenants remaining
Demolition contractors are expected on site within days
preparing to take down a third of the buildings
including a church and fire-damaged school
after they were condemned as structurally unsafe

Mr Swinney continued: “Obviously there was a banner displayed which was unacceptable at the weekend. I don’t think that was an appropriate image. But it’s for the club to reflect on that issue, to address any issues and for the police to make their judgment about that matter as well.”
Several items, including a glass bottle, were also thrown into Celtic goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo’s penalty area in the second half. A Police Scotland spokesperson also acknowledged that incident and said inquiries are being made.
In a statement on Sunday, Rangers said the club “condemns the actions of the individual who threw a bottle during today’s match. This behaviour has no place at our stadium.
“Steps have already been taken to identify the person responsible, and the club will take the strongest possible action once their identity is confirmed. We also acknowledge that the tifo displayed prior to kick-off crossed a line and was unacceptable. Our approach to supporter displays has always been built on trust, with the responsibility placed on groups to exercise good judgment.
“We will reflect on how these displays are managed and engage with supporter groups to ensure the right balance of trust, responsibility and oversight is maintained moving forward. Rangers is proud of its passionate fanbase, and we all share a duty to protect the standards and reputation of our club.”

Watch: Highlights as Rangers and Celtic share spoils
Celtic came from behind to deny Rangers a third straight victory over their rivals as Adam Idah's second-half strike frustrated Barry Ferguson's home side in the Scottish Premiership.
Nicolas Raskin had an early header ruled out for offside before Cyriel Dessers netted his 25th goal of the season for Rangers just before half-time, only for Republic of Ireland international Idah to pounce and level.
The draw means Rangers have failed to win at Ibrox for the seventh straight fixture, an unwelcome run that has never happened before.
For Scottish champions Celtic, the point allows them to retain their 17-point margin over the second-top Ibrox side as they close out another successful league campaign unscathed.
With nothing at stake and the title decided, the idea this was meaningless remained fanciful.
After conceding three goals in each of their last three meetings with Rangers, and starting slowly in those, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers emphasised to his team the need to begin strongly.
They didn't. Within a minute, Leon Balogun met a corner with a free header but clipped the crossbar to Rodgers' relief.
Being alert at set-pieces was something the Northern Irishman cited pre-match having seen that cost them in recent match-ups, but they struggled with that at times.
The visitors grew as the first half went on, though, and after Idah failed to play in James Forrest, Vaclav Cerny came close via a deflection, but visiting goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo did superbly well to retreat and tip over.
It was frenetic. Another set-play looked to have undone the visitors when James Tavernier's deep cross was met by Raskin and his header crept home. Celebrations were curtailed by a VAR check that deemed him just offside.
It swung back and forth. Cameron Carter-Vickers had a header tipped on to the bar by Liam Kelly. Rangers' goalkeeper also did well to stay big when Idah got clean through.
Almost immediately, Rangers broke, Cerny dummied brilliantly and Dessers did the rest, holding off Liam Scales before finding the corner. Twenty-five goals for the season is not bad for someone who draws such a frequent high level of criticism.
Celtic had answers to find, as they have of late in these meetings, but they found the right one.
Daizen Maeda escaped down the left. The ball eventually fell to Idah, who turned brilliantly and slammed home via a deflection.
The drama continued as that was called offside, only to be overturned as Maeda was not interfering with Kelly's view as the ball hit the net, despite being offside.
Maeda uncharacteristically failed to capitalise on a late break, but Celtic were perhaps still the happier to leave Ibrox unscathed with the title already delivered.

After six home games without a win, a seventh against Celtic was unthinkable, especially after conceding this league so tamely.
One goal in those six games was an incredibly poor return. That may have been the spark for a quick start in which Balogun was close to an immediate opener.
On the big occasions this season, Rangers have often found a higher level of performance and loosely dropped points and trophy opportunities elsewhere.
They produced another one here but could not see it through to deliver a little more respite for their suffering supporters.
For interim head coach Ferguson, it must have seemed likely that this would be his last chance to put one over on Celtic as the man in charge. He could not quite get there but will likely feel his side performed well over the piece.
It is a season Rangers just want done with, with hope of better times ahead on the horizon once the takeover of the club is finalised.
With a fourth successive Premiership title in the bag, this mattered little to Celtic. Except it did. They all do against Rangers.
Having lost their last two league fixtures against the Ibrox side, there was no chance this would be taken lightly.
Rodgers pointed to starting well and being more alert at set-pieces. Both were missing and they were fortunate more than once not to concede.
However, they responded well and took a grip of matters at times, albeit their opponents had better chances, particularly in the first half.
That they managed to come from behind is a reminder of Celtic's character and self-belief. They were not at their best again, but in this environment, and circumstance, they will surely be satisfied.
For Idah, this game also provided a big moment. His goal return has been reasonable given his minutes on the pitch, and another big one against Rangers will boost the perception of his overall contribution.
Rangers interim head coach Barry Ferguson: "A bit disappointed we didn't come away with three points.
"The commitment from my players was what I asked for, really good.
"Scored a good goal, went in at half-time deserving of the lead. We know Celtic are going to come out [strongly in the] second half, but we weathered the storm really well. It was just that bit of quality in the end that we need to be better at."
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: "The performance level was a good one. Rangers changed their structure, we were playing against a diamond, so once we figured that out, we had lots of moments where we played through that pressure well.
"There weren't too many chances either side. Second half, we controlled the game. When you come to Ibrox, you sometimes have 10-15 minutes where you're under real pressure, backs to the wall, but I never really felt that. We got the goal, we deserved it."

Glasgow City bolstered their SWPL title hopes, and ended reigning champions Celtic's aspirations of back-to-back wins in the process, with a comfortable victory at Petershill Park.
Nicole Kozlova's double and Brenna Lovera's strike put City three up by the break. Celtic replied through Lucy Ashworth-Clifford.
Kozlova netted her first from a tight angle and Lovera laid on Kozlova's second. Lovera then pounced on a goalkeeping error to add the third.
The visitors improved after half-time and Ashworth-Clifford converted Kit Loferski's cross for Celtic's consolation goal.
League leaders Hibs' win over Hearts moved them back to the summit, three points ahead of City and 11 in front of Elena Sadiku's Celtic, who are now officially out of the title race with three games left.

Officialdom could not assist Celtic seconds before the interval, Cyriel Dessers holding off Liam Scales before slotting a low finish beyond Viljami Sinisalo. Adam Idah had wasted a glorious opportunity for Celtic just a minute earlier.
Celtic responded strongly after half-time. Maeda won the break of the ball from a John Souttar clearance before laying back to Idah. The Irishman’s fierce shot deflected off Souttar and into the Rangers net. An original offside call, made against Maeda in the buildup, was overruled by the VAR and the equaliser stood.
Ferguson and his staff appealed vociferously for a penalty after Callum McGregor tangled with Ianis Hagi. “If that happens in the middle of the pitch, it is a foul,” said Ferguson. Raskin and Hamza Igamane missed chances to claim the points for Rangers. Celtic, for all their possession, did not look particularly dangerous until Maeda marauded in stoppage time.
A banner spanning the length of the Copland Stand was unfurled immediately before kick-off. “Take aim against the rebel scum,” it read. Above this was an image of Graeme Souness with shotgun in hand. With lusty renditions of No Pope of Rome, later followed by The Billy Boys plus missiles being flung on to the pitch it was like transporting back in time.
Rangers later condemned the throwing of a bottle and in a statement added: “We acknowledge that the tifo displayed prior to kick-off crossed a line and was unacceptable. Our approach to supporter displays has always been built on trust, with the responsibility placed on groups to exercise good judgement.”
Rangers interim head coach Barry Ferguson celebrates Cyriel Dessers' opener against Celtic in their 1-1 draw
Interim head coach Barry Ferguson maintains hope of being in charge of Rangers beyond the end of this season after Celtic came from behind to deny the Ibrox side a third straight win over the Scottish champions
Despite an encouraging display and leading through Cyriel Dessers' 25th goal of the season just before half-time
they were denied by Adam Idah's second-half leveller to extend their Ibrox winless run to an unwanted record seven matches
With the points differential remaining at 17 with Celtic
Ferguson still believes he has what it takes to succeed as permanent boss
emphasising that urgency is paramount to bring clarity
but I know I can do the job," he told BBC Scotland
"I've been written off all my life in terms of my playing career
There's been bumps – that's just part of management
but it's not scared me one single bit
because the season's just round the corner
"There is a lot of work to be done and the quicker that everybody knows who's going to be in charge
Ferguson was left "a bit disappointed we didn't come away with three points" against Celtic
He thought he got "the commitment from my players" he was asking for and insisted "the mentality is there" among the squad he inherited
"It's just making sure you bring that sort of mentality on a consistent basis," Ferguson said
"It's something we've not been able to do this season
Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson is unconvinced that Ferguson will see his wish granted at the end of the season as new prospective owners prepare a takeover
"I don't think they've done enough in the short time that they've been here," he said of Ferguson and his coaching staff
"There's been moments when they've had good results and it's looked positive
but that's followed up with a kind of inept performance the next week
are just wanting it to be announced about the investment
a manager announced and then they can start looking ahead to next season
which surely can't be as bitterly disappointing a campaign as this one."

Evening fixture: Rangers v Motherwell (18:00)
The result means Rangers have failed to win at Ibrox for the seventh consecutive game -- a new club record
Rangers' interim head coach Barry Ferguson told BBC Scotland: "It needs to get sorted out as quickly as possible because a lot of people need to know what's going on
"The quicker we sort what's going on in terms of next season
"The quicker everyone knows who's going to be in charge
People have got opinions and that's totally up to them

The hosts looked well-placed to follow up their wins in January and March when Dessers put them in front on the verge of half-time

Celtic squandered the chance to steal all three points at the death when Reo Hatate seized upon an error from Rangers captain James Tavernier to send Daizen Maeda scampering in behind in second-half stoppage time
But a heavy touch from Maeda allowed Rangers goalkeeper Liam Kelly to come out and smother the opening
"The performance level was a good one," Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers said
"There weren't too many chances either side
you sometimes have 10-15 minutes where you're under real pressure
maybe our final third play didn't lend us to creating opportunities
Adam Idah cancelled out Cyriel Dessers' opener to deny Rangers a third consecutive Old Firm derby victory on Sunday as the arch-rivals drew 1-1 at Ibrox.
The result means Rangers have failed to win at Ibrox for the seventh consecutive game -- a new club record.
Asked about his future, Rangers' interim head coach Barry Ferguson told BBC Scotland: \"It needs to get sorted out as quickly as possible because a lot of people need to know what's going on. I've been pretty open about that. The changes are starting to happen.
\"The quicker we sort what's going on in terms of next season, the better, because the season is just round the corner. Before you know it, you're in pre-season. There's a lot of work to be done.
\"The quicker everyone knows who's going to be in charge, the better.
\"I've been written off all my life, in terms of my playing career. People have got opinions and that's totally up to them, but I know I can do the job - we just need to wait and see.
\"When I got the opportunity, I grabbed it with both hands. I've really enjoyed it. There's been bumps, that's part of management, but it's not scared me one single bit.\"
Rangers are 17 points adrift of Celtic, who have already sealed the Scottish Premiership title.
The hosts looked well-placed to follow up their wins in January and March when Dessers put them in front on the verge of half-time.
But Idah got Celtic level in the 57th minute to pile more pressure on Ferguson.
Celtic squandered the chance to steal all three points at the death when Reo Hatate seized upon an error from Rangers captain James Tavernier to send Daizen Maeda scampering in behind in second-half stoppage time. But a heavy touch from Maeda allowed Rangers goalkeeper Liam Kelly to come out and smother the opening.
\"The performance level was a good one,\" Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers said. \"Rangers changed their structure, we were playing against a diamond, so once we figured that out, we had lots of moments where we played through that pressure well.
\"There weren't too many chances either side. We had to be strong in some set-piece moments in the first half. At half-time, I still felt we were at a good place in the game.
\"Second half, we controlled the game. When you come to Ibrox, you sometimes have 10-15 minutes where you're under real pressure, backs to the wall, but I never really felt that.
\"If I was to criticise, maybe our final third play didn't lend us to creating opportunities. But our build-up was composed. We got the goal, we deserved it.\"

With his final Old Firm game looming into view
legendary Rangers manager Walter Smith admitted he was "delighted" to be leaving the Glasgow derby firepit
coming at a time when retirement was on the horizon and when off-field matters were dominating the headlines
The latter emphasising his desire to call it a day
It is unlikely Smith's former captain Barry Ferguson will want Sunday to be his last taste of a fixture that means everything in Glasgow but counts for little on this occasion
Celtic's latest title success, their 13th in 14 seasons, has left a bitter taste in Ferguson's mouth as the interim head coach prepares for what may be his final game against the champions, with the Ibrox club's incoming paymasters expected to make sweeping changes
having made his derby debut in the midfield boiler room alongside Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Jorg Albertz in 1998
He knows what wins over their neighbours can do when it comes to longevity in the post
despite ending an almost five-year wait for a victory at Celtic Park the last time they locked horns
Ferguson's short stint in the hotseat looks to be coming to an end with inauspicious results elsewhere and an inability to win at home
Putting it up to Celtic has not been Rangers' problem in recent months
They have won the past two derbies and were a penalty shootout away from winning the League Cup against Brendan Rodgers' side in December
They have scored three goals in three successive games against their old rivals for the first time since 2002 and are chasing a third straight win over them in the same season for the first time since 1996-97
And yet it feels like Rangers are as far behind Celtic as they've ever been
Goals have rained in on them and points have been shed against the other Premiership sides with staggering regularity
Rangers have only scored once in their previous six games at Ibrox and equally staggering is the fact they have conceded at least twice in 11 of their past 13 overall
What chances a Rangers guard of honour for Celtic
Celtic's Jota ruled out for up to nine months
Celtic's Scottish league dominance in numbers
the title has been wrapped up with ease yet again
But those two defeats to Rangers will irk the Celtic boss
There was a time when the outcome of these games indicated where the title was going
Rodgers' Old Firm record still stands above all others and that is something he will want to maintain
He likes to have records in mind as he goes along and one still to achieve is beating the 106 goals his invincible side scored in 2016-17 during his maiden season at Parkhead
Celtic are five away from achieving that having scored five in each of their past three matches
Having secured honour number 11 as Celtic boss
Rodgers has moved himself into sixth place in Scottish Football's managerial roll of honour
The latter two are catchable if Rodgers plans on sticking around for the next few seasons
he has three more chances to register a victory at Ibrox with the club setting an unwanted benchmark of six home games without one
The 47-year-old will have spent many a night since replacing Phillipe Clement wondering why this group of players can beat Celtic twice yet lose to Queen's Park
Motherwell and Hibernian on their own patch
Not all of those have come on his watch but Ferguson knows it is a level of ignominy that won't wash at Rangers and if it is to be the end of his spell in charge
he will personally want a 100% record from his games against Celtic
it won't register on the Richter scale but the phrase "dead rubber" doesn't really apply when it comes to these best of enemies

Man Utd join race for defender Tah - Saturday's gossip
Kilmarnock striker set for Swansea switch - gossip
it’s not all about the big three Glasgow clubs
There’s been an astonishing breakthrough from the ranks
Here we are in early May and the fight for the Scottish Women's Premier League title remains very tight
They’ve been in contention for a while now
and recent results have helped maintain their challenge
They lead Glasgow City by three points and are five points ahead of Rangers in third
Hibs followed up a Sky Sports Cup 5-0 thrashing by Rangers in late March with a solid 2-0 win at home in April against the third-placed side
which kept Hibs very much in the hunt for the title
Their next big challenge and a possible title decider comes on Sunday
a Hibs win would give them a huge advantage
A City win would bring the two level on points
but the Glasgow side already has a 20-goal advantage when it comes to goal difference
A draw leaves the title in Hibs hands to win
while the rest wait for them to slip up against either Celtic or Rangers in the final two matches
That's an incredible performance so far by Hibs
It’s sometimes a risk declaring award winners while the season is underway
it is well deserved for breaking into that Glasgow trio
It’s a healthy position too for the SWPL with the added competition Hibs have brought this season
but it would take a Hibs and City blow-up to allow them in
A disappointment for last year's champions
But it has been an exciting title run in all round
While Dundee United and Queens Park have been doomed to go down for a while
Montrose is fighting hard to break out of the bottom three
They beat relegation rivals Spartans 2-1 on Sunday
The next three games will be critical for both sides
but Montrose isn't done yet by any means
so we can expect a tense finish at the bottom of the SWPL as well as at the top

A new Bishop has been consecrated in the Diocese of Glasgow & Galloway at a service held in the Cathedral Church of St Mary the Virgin in Glasgow
The consecration of the Right Reverend Doctor Nicholas Bundock took place on Saturday evening following his election earlier this year
The service was led by the Most Rev Mark Strange
Ross & Caithness and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church
He was joined by other members of the College in the act of consecration – laying of hands on the new Bishop
the new Bishop described the occasion as “a profound and humbling moment in my life and ministry”
He continued: “The service has been a celebration of the inclusive
and courageous spirit that defines this diocese
I am honoured to join you in this shared calling: to be a Church for Everyone
and the transformative power of God’s love
and encouragement of so many across Glasgow and Galloway and beyond
I do so with a heart full of hope for what God will do among us in the days and years ahead.”
said: “We welcome Bishop Nick and his wife Rachel to the Scottish Province
“We will enjoy learning from their experiences in the Diocese of Manchester as I hope they will enjoy discovering the joys of the Scottish Episcopal Church from us
We are called to be enthusiastic proclaimers of faith
and I feel that in Nick we have someone who will embrace that in his ministry.”
Bishop Nicholas was welcomed formally and lead to his episcopal seat by the Provost of the Cathedral
The sermon was given by The Rev Dr John L Bell
hymnwriter and member of the Iona Community
In an entertaining and uplifting address
Dr Bell recounted the installation of a 19th century Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway
who was an unpopular choice with the congregation that day: volleys of missiles were discharged
the precentor had the wig torn from his head
and the Earl of Glencairn was struck on the cheek with a dead cat
Said Dr Bell: “I trust that the good people of Holy Trinity Kilmarnock will be less cavalier with dead cats should the new bishop pay them a courtesy call.”
Dr Bell concluded his sermon by highlighting the recent increase of interest in spirituality
and added: “I pray that your new bishop will detect in all the parishes represented here a keenness to be oases of hospitality and communities of shared faith which God desires
“Don’t expect him to be fascinated by your complaints and disappointments
Do expect him to fan into life the flame that is in you.”
There were readings from Isaiah 61.1-3 by Jenny Whelan of St Margaret’s Newlands and from Acts 6:1-7 from Jan Whiteside
The service was followed by a reception at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum
Bishop Nicholas was previously the Team Rector of St James and Emmanuel
in the Diocese of Manchester in the Church of England
he developed and led an inclusive ministry known as ‘Church for Everyone,’ which has been transformative in creating vibrant
and growing communities for people of all backgrounds
including those who have often felt excluded from traditional church settings
He studied Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Sheffield and the University of North Texas
before training for ordination at the University of Cambridge and Ridley Hall Theological College
He was ordained deacon in 2002 and priest in 2003
Oliver and Sophie. In his spare time he is a keen gardener with a strong interest in carnivorous plants and cacti
and can often be found walking his pet Cardigan Welsh Corgi
He also enjoys massively multiplayer online role-playing games
in particular World of Warcraft in which his character is ‘Holy Priest’
The service was live-streamed and can be watched again here
There will be a special service of Choral Evensong on Sunday 11 May at 5pm at St Mary’s Cathedral
Bishop Nicholas will preach and he invites everyone who wishes to be there to join him
The service is not ticketed and is open to all

A love letter to the city they now call home
‘Glasgow Love Story’ is the stunning new album from Scotland’s Tide Lines.
Tide Lines have always been storytellers and their new album
‘Glasgow Love Story’ is a masterclass in that and more
this four piece have made a na..me for themselves as one of Scotland’s leading folk-rock groups
Celebrating their ten years of releasing music together
this album is a heartfelt tribute to the city that they have grown to love and call home
They have always adopted a hands-on approach to their work; opting to record
press and release their records by themselves
This DIY mindset cements each piece as a real labour of love
a wonderfully upbeat track that oozes optimism in the face of an uncertain future
it’s an indication of the fun that is going to happen over the next 12 songs
Special credit has to be given to Ross Wilson on keys whose interludes inject a real sense of joy into things
It’s followed by ‘Homeward Bound’ and the eponymous ‘Glasgow Love Story’ where the band’s folk influences really come to the fore
particularly through the guitar melodies played by Robert Robertson and Alasdair Turner
Something I have always loved about Tide Lines is the way their accents shine through on the vocals
it's special to see how his tone has gained a more Glaswegian sound over the years and is a wonderful testament to the inspirations they have gained from being in the city for so long.
The album gives itself roots in its use of geographical landmarks
often coming across as a highlights reel of the best Glasgow has to offer
Aside from the references that are peppered throughout
the most clear nod to the city is the final track
Ashton Lane is a quaint cobbled back-street in Glasgow’s West End
it has been noted for its bars and restaurants but holds importance due to its connection to the bigger and better known Byers Road; the artery that keeps the pulse of the West End beating steadily
it acts as a site for reflection - the things they have achieved
‘And we hardly felt the rain as we walked down Ashton Lane
cause good times come and go so fast and I can’t say for sure they’ll come again - cause we were younger when we walked down Ashton Lane.’
It’s unclear as to whether the context of this exchange is between the bandmates or taken out of a romantic setting but the sentiment it brings is one you could recognise regardless of the kind of relationship it has come from
The themes of reflection and nostalgia work really well with what essentially is twist on the ‘homecoming album’ and is testament to all the incredible things they have done together
There’s a really momentous quality to a lot of the instrumentation on the record that instil into the album a sense of pride and importance
Tide Lines throughout their career have been incredibly vocal about their love for their Scottish roots and the artists that paved the way for them and as a result this album really feels like a celebration of everything it means to make music here
‘If I Had Time’ and ‘The Hardest Miles’ are two tracks where this pride is most clear
the latter of which including a bagpipe section lifted right out of that one scene in Braveheart
As well as channeling what it feels like to be Scottish
there’s moments on the album that capture what it sounds like here: from the chirping birds on ‘The Mountains We Climb’ to the saxophonist on ‘Lonely and the Free’ who would not be out of place amongst the buskers of Buchanan Street.
Tide Lines have announced ‘The Glasgow Love Story Series’
a collection of small shows travelling the lengths of the country
The already sold out shows will see them play in iconic and beautiful venues like Glasgow’s Oran Mor
The Caves in Edinburgh and An Seòmar in Inverness
They’re also embarking on a huge tour later this year which will see them take on a multitude of stages from the Belladrum Tartan Heart’s festival to London’s O2 Shepherd Bush Empire.
