Alice Manzo (20) of Westfield tries to get past Audrey Campbell (6) of Northern Highlands during the girls lacrosse game at Northern Highlands High School in Allendale NJ on Thursday
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Lauren Knego | NJ Advance Media for NJ.comWestfield only had one thing on its mind heading into Monday’s game against Glen Ridge - the 13-4 loss the Blue Devils suffered at the hands of the Ridgers last year
made sure that Westfield didn’t endure another Glen Ridge loss
Cymbor took a pass from Alice Manzo in front of the net and scored behind Glen Ridge goalie Marjorie Boyle to give Westfield the 12-11 victory on Monday morning
It was the fourth-straight win for Westfield
which now sits atop the Stars & Stripes Blue Division with Morris Knolls and Madison
it was the second-straight one-goal loss after winning games against Caldwell and Sparta
everyone wanted revenge so I feel like that was the main factor in wanting to win so badly,” Cymbor said
“And we have a super hard schedule and this was a really big game for us.”
and a goal from Manzo gave Westfield an 8-7 lead with 9:09 left in the third
That would be the only goal the Blue Devils would score as the Ridgers scored three-straight
Manzo struck again to make it 10-9 with 11:16 left in the game
then scored again with 6:50 remaining on an assist from Gillian Cohen to tie the game 10-10
A free position goal from Spillett put Glen Ridge back in front
but Cohen then scored on an assist from Manzo to tie the game 11-11 with 3:31 left
“I think we knew going in it was going to be a tough game so I think we adjusted well
I really do think it was a full team effort
everyone on the field wanted it just as much as everyone else,” Manzo said
we knew if something happened we had each other’s backs and we would just get the next one.”
Westfield was awarded a free position shot with three seconds remaining in regulation
but the shot went wide and the game went to overtime
Neither team could muster much on offense in the first three-minute overtime
but Manzo set up Cymbor’s heroics in the second free period
“(Alice) was carrying the ball down the field and I kind of saw my opening,” Cymbor said of her shot
“The defense was overloaded towards her because they knew she was going to make a move
and I cut and it was wide open pretty much.”
‘Kate cut,’ and she was there,” Manzo added
but Glen Ridge climbed back into the game in the second quarter
outscoring the Blue Devils 6-3 to tie the game 7-7 at the half
“We were trying a new defense and they definitely scored on it
and then we bounced back when it was tied,” Cymbor said
“It was a zero-zero mindset the whole game and that’s really what kept us in it.”
She currently has 31 goals on the season and is three goals away from 300
Addison Townson added a hat trick and two assists
while Katie Powers finished with two goals
Grace Sutton chipped in six assists and four draw controls
but we knew that we had a good defense and we just had to keep up our communication and have each other’s backs,” Manzo said
Cymbor contributed a hat trick and two draw controls
while Cohen recorded two goals and three assists
Their defense kind of struggled to defend our attack
which was super helpful and we played super well on defense towards the end of the game,” Cymbor said
That play doesn’t really determine the whole game

1/31Girls Basketball: Union County Final - Westfield vs
2025THE GLEN RIDGE BLUEPRINTRide the wave: Glen Ridge is playing in its first Group final
and has been riding a wave of momentum to get to this point
In her first season as head coach Kristina Danella has made history with the Ridgers
which went 23-8 and played 11 games against teams that were at one point or another ranked in the Top 20
New Providence has hit for 165 3-pointers this season
New Providence has four players that can hit from beyond the arc
and the Ridgers will need to be diligent on defense
Learn from mistakes: This will be the second time that Glen Ridge and New Providence meet this season after New Providence picked up a 57-43 victory back on Jan
The Ridgers have gone 13-4 since then and are riding a five-game win streak
If Glen Ridge can learn from some of the missteps it made in that loss almost two months ago
it has a shot at dealing New Providence a blow
Been here before: New Providence is no stranger to the state tournament
having won a state title in 2023 and advancing to the Central
which also won the Union County Tournament title this season
have battle-tested players who have been in big games and know how to play in a state final
Spread the offense: Junior Annie Conover scored a career-high 31 points in the win over Thrive Charter in the sectional final
but in the Group 1 semifinals the Pioneers made sure to spread the offense since Conover was a defensive target
The outcome was a victory over Haddon Township where six different players combined for 55 points
New Providence has the ability to do it again as a number of different players have the capacity to step up and score
Take care of the ball: New Providence has 212 steals as a team this season
which is an average of almost seven a game
The Pioneers will have to take care of the ball and avoid turning it over as much as possible
as Glen Ridge has the ability to turn turnovers into points

NJ — Protesters gathered for another round of demonstrations against President Donald Trump and his administration in three Essex County towns over the Easter holiday weekend: Bloomfield
Organizers called for a national day of action on Saturday against the “anti-democratic and illegal actions of the Trump administration and its plutocratic allies.”
“Violence of any kind will not be tolerated,” national organizers emphasized
Local events – each organized independently – took place in Bloomfield, Glen Ridge and West Caldwell
hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the municipal building
Protesters chanted slogans and carried signs
Protesters also gave speeches that attacked many of the Trump administration’s policies – including the ongoing federal budget cuts – and accused the president of violating “basic constitutional freedoms” like free speech and the due process of law
Protesters also hit the streets in Glen Ridge and West Caldwell
More anti-Trump rallies are being organized nationally for May 1
Last weekend’s events were organized in the wake of a national day of protest against President Trump
Elon Musk and the federal budget cuts that took place on April 5
That round of demonstrations was spearheaded by different organizations
Essex County has also seen support for Trump, including a rally in Montclair organized by local GOP voters prior to the president’s Election Day victory
Former Vice President Kamala Harris took Essex County in the 2024 presidential election
nailing down 224,596 votes (71.69 percent)
Trump scored 83,908 votes – about 26.78 percent
Trump performed much better on a statewide basis in last November’s election, however, flipping five New Jersey counties from blue to red

2025Comments Off on Glen Ridge HS boys lacrosse team seeks strong season
NJ — The Glen Ridge High School boys lacrosse team hopes to have a strong season under first-year head coach Anthony Sicoli
looking to improve on last year’s seven-win season
A: We’re bringing back a strong core of upperclassmen who know how to compete and lead
Among our key returners are Connor Sutton (senior
captain) – a steady offensive presence with great vision and decision-making; Brad Foster (senior
captain) – a two-way workhorse and emotional leader in the middle of the field; Ryan Mansfield (senior
inside finisher and always in motion – he is transitioning from attack to midfield this season; Cameron Atkinson (senior
captain) – he anchors our back line with toughness and poise
and sets the tone with physicality and precision; and Mason Giamo (senior
high-IQ defender who communicates constantly and leads with infectious energy – he’s the vocal glue of our defense
including two key starters: Max Corradi (defense) and David Kelly (FOGO)
David is continuing his career at the University of Scranton
Their leadership and presence will be missed
but we’ve got hungry returners ready to step up
Q: Which players have experience as starters
A: The returning players with starting experience include senior defender Henry O’Connor
junior long-stick middie John Leone and sophomore goalie Keiller Goodwin
A: We’re excited about a few underclassmen who are stepping into key roles this season: freshman defender Tyler Kamil
freshman defensive midfielder Michael Carrillo and freshman midfielder Aidan Kelly
who is the younger brother of 2023 grad and former FOGO David Kelly
toughness and a team-first mentality that fits right into our culture
Q: What are your hopes and expectations for the team
A: Our biggest hope is that this group develops the kind of daily work ethic and mental composure that will serve them far beyond lacrosse
handle adversity with maturity and grow as teammates and young men
That foundation will help them grow into stronger humans
who succeeds longtime head coach Carl Houser III
was previously a defensive coordinator at GRHS
This is his seventh year involved with Glen Ridge lacrosse
he has coached with Brotherhood Lacrosse and the NJ Sixers box lacrosse program
“I train in jiu jitsu daily and try to bring that same mindset – discipline
resilience and attention to detail – to how we coach and compete,” Sicoli said
we brought Ed Adeogun back home as our defensive coordinator and Director of Player Development for the town
His leadership and connection to the community are already making a huge impact
We’re also lucky to have several Glen Ridge alumni from the 2018 and 2019 teams returning as assistant coaches or just showing up to help out – guys we coached not long ago who are now giving back to the next generation
It speaks volumes about the culture we’re trying to build here.”
Leone has done exceptional work off the field
Leone founded a student-led initiative called Athletes for Good
and has been leading the charge on meaningful community service projects that are making a real impact
Stevie Grober and Carson Ross are officers in the club and the entire team is behind the effort

no problem: Glen Ridge HS fencer Jonathan Dai finishes second at state finals
NJ — Jonathan Dai proved he is one of the best high school fencers in the state
the Glen Ridge High School senior won the second-place medal in foil at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s state individual finals at Hunterdon Central High School in Flemington on Saturday
where do you train and how long have you been training there
My parents were on an assignment in Shanghai then and there were many fencing clubs
so I started the hour-and-half long commute one way to V Fencing
We did it for five years until the high school transition year
We decided to move to New Jersey to be closer to the club and to the Newark Liberty airport because I was competing extensively
I have been training at V Fencing for nine years
my parents had me try various sports – swimming
I fell in love with fencing the first time I was on the strip
I loved that I was able to emulate characters onscreen and in movies that took inspiration from fencing
and that winning is not just about being stronger
I particularly enjoy scoring a point in a tricky way…it is fun
It has trained me to quickly come up with a strategy in challenging situations
and the resiliency against adversity; you deal with failure all the time and you must need to come back up and go
2 in the state at the New Jersey High School Fencing Championship
A: This is my first time competing in a high school tournament
I qualified in the first round for independent fencers in early February
The format of the tournament with 5-point pools only
is different from that of the tournaments I usually competed at
Junior Olympics or Junior World Cup competitions
where we do 5-touch pools first and then 15-point direct elimination later
and it gives me a preview of what an NCAA individual championship is like
I also had the opportunity to meet some foil fencers from other high schools
what would you like to say to those who like sports but are not sure
A: Glen Ridge High School has supported me tremendously during the past four years
it has high academic standards on students
national championships and Junior Olympics
as well European cadet circuits and Junior World Cups representing the USA
The school leadership team and administration made sure that I get the help from teachers as needed
and I made sure never to miss turning in my assignments wherever I am
get-togethers and video-game opportunities in order to practice or compete
I want to tell my fellow high school students that if you are passionate about a sport
it will be a lot of hard work and sacrifices
one can excel in both academic and athletic pursuits
who signed a letter of intent to continue his fencing career at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend
53 in USA Division 1 (Senior) Rolling ranking and No
149 in Junior FIE Ranking (International Fencing Foundation)
Dai was on the USA Cadet Team in his sophomore and junior years (top 20 in the country)
and made the USA Fencing High School All-American First Team and USA Fencing All-Academic First Team
He was also in the GRHS National Honors Society
Dai has medalled and was in the top eight on numerous national and international competitions

used a strong third quarter en route to a 42-36 victory over Glen Ridge to win the Group 1 title on Saturday afternoon at Jersey Mike’s Arena
It’s the fourth Group 1 title for New Providence
The Pioneers won the Group 2 title in 2023
we had five goals and completed all of them so I’m just so proud,” New Providence’s Annie Conover said
After losing players we didn’t get down on ourselves
worked hard in practice every day and got the results we wanted.”
Under first-year head coach Kristina Danella
Glen Ridge advanced to the Essex County Tournament semifinals
Group 1 title and played in its first Group 1 final
“They’re a phenomenal team and they’re phenomenally coached,” Danella said
“Cap (Pazdera) is one of the best in the state
very good basketball game ourselves and I felt we did a really good job
it’s sad that one team had to lose this game
We’re both very good teams and they just had the better day today.”
Saturday’s Group 1 final was the second time that New Providence and Glen Ridge had faced one another
The Pioneers defeated Glen Ridge 57-43 back on Jan
we couldn’t take them for granted since we beat them earlier in the season
it was going to be a battle so we just had to do all the things that we could control,” Conover said
losing at the half so we did not get down on ourselves
we believed in ourselves and just did what we had to to stay composed and finish it strong.”
New Providence led 11-10 after the first quarter
and Glen Ridge took its first lead of the game 14-11 after back-to-back baskets by Caitlin Hood to open the second
Both teams traded baskets and the Ridgers took a 19-17 lead after a free throw by Hood with 1:43 left
A basket by Conover tied the game 19-19 with 1:21 remaining
but Glen Ridge took a 20-19 lead into halftime after a free throw from Hood
“We’re used to playing when the game’s close at the end of the game
the Union County final and in some of the sectional games that we had,” New Providence’s Brenna Slattery
“So we were definitely used to the environment and the fast pace
so we know to stay composed and just stick together no matter what the score is
and that usually leads to us being more aggressive on defense and offense.”
A basket by Riley O’Sullivan gave Glen Ridge a 22-19 lead to open the third quarter
but from there New Providence caught fire and went on a 10-0 run to take a 30-22 lead with 3:10 remaining
Katie Powers scored to cut it to 30-24 with 1:13 remaining
but a basket at the buzzer from Addy Fitzgerald gave the Pioneers a 32-24 lead after three
New Providence opened its largest lead of the game
after a 3 from Megan Henn to open the fourth quarter
But Glen Ridge went on a 9-1 run in the span of four minutes to cut it to 36-33 with 3:15 left in the game
it could have gone one of two ways and we just continued to fight and fight until the last minute,” Danella said
“I’m so proud of them and everything that they’ve been through and playing five kids the whole game
Our seniors have done a phenomenal job this year of just fighting through everything
being phenomenal leaders and that’s all I can ask for as a coach.”
as New Providence closed out the game on a 6-3 run for the 42-36 final
“Obviously it definitely started on defense and they had size on us
“We knew they were going to score so we just had to stay composed.”
Powers led with a team-high 11 points and added two assists
“I definitely was focused more on (Riley O’Sullivan) and making sure she didn’t get any looks
but everyone else did a great job on their players,” Slattery said
“Boxing them out and not letting them get any open looks to the basket because they do have size on us but we just stayed aggressive and not let it get to our head.”
Conover led New Providence with a game-high 18 points and added six rebounds
