2025 Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of 50-year-old EVANGELOS DROSOS of Glen Rock
on charges of money laundering and theft by deception
The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck
the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit received information regarding an alleged financial scheme
Detectives initiated a months-long investigation that revealed EVANGELOS DROSOS engaged in a check-kiting pattern where he generated self-issued checks from accounts under his control at several institutions and then deposited those checks into multiple accounts at a different financial institution while knowing that the issuing accounts did not have funds to cover the checks
DROSOS then abused the provisional credit by rapidly withdrawing the non-existent funds
resulting in the theft of approximately $496,788.88
This pattern of transactions occurred continuously over a period of three weeks
EVANGELOS DROSOS was arrested on Wednesday
NJ and charged with second-degree theft by deception
2C:20-4a and second-degree money laundering
DROSOS was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack
Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations
and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt
Prosecutor Musella thanks the Glen Rock Police Department for its assistance in this investigation

Glen Rock remains one of Bergen County’s quieter and safer towns
One issue periodically plagues the local Police Department
though: shoplifting at a borough liquor store
The Bottle King store on Prospect Street has seen nearly a dozen shoplifting reports in the past year
“Our two most frequent targets we have in Glen Rock for shoplifting is Bottle King liquors and our CVS store,” said Police Chief Dean Ackermann
the liquor store has reported 10 shoplifting incidents
according to police blotters sent by the department
In one event, an employee was struck and injured by a motor vehicle while trying to pursue a shoplifter on Halloween night last year
The driver was accused of being an accomplice to the shoplifter and was arrested that night
Bottle King has what Ackermann calls “an excellent security system,” and the police chief attributes all the shoplifting to the large amount of inventory in its warehouse
The store manager declined to comment about the most recent case of shoplifting
Ackermann said the Police Department has had great success in catching suspects in the thefts
charges were filed in half of the shoplifting cases reported at Bottle King
The cases totaled over $2,700 worth of merchandise
Ackermann said he believes shoplifting is increasing not just in Glen Rock
He also said these are instances of organized crime
Glen Rock police charged two people in thefts at Bottle King that they said were related to a retail theft ring
“I’m not talking about someone who is down on their luck and suffering from addiction
They are going out there to steal quantities of product specifically for profit and resale
This is not a kid taking candy without paying.”
Glen Rock has seen a slight rise in shoplifting
the Police Department reported 27 calls for service in shoplifting incidents
The Glen Rock police chief said he wishes the state would legislate harsher penalties for shoplifters to combat the recent uptick
“Our state Legislature needs to take a stance on shoplifting
With property crime not high on the list of priorities in the criminal justice system
the consequences for shoplifters are not that great,” Ackermann said

Investigators determined that Droso issued himself checks from accounts under his control from different institutions

As one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen — the first Black pilots to serve in World War II — Thomas Hawkins flew 28 missions
he was about to embark on another when his plane crashed on the runway of the Ramitelli airfield in Italy
His name is etched on the war memorial in front of the Glen Rock Municipal Building alongside others who served this country with distinction in past wars
wants Hawkins' alma mater to bear his name
Jackson, 73, started a petition to ask the Glen Rock Board of Education to rename Central Elementary School on Maple Avenue as Thomas L. Hawkins Central School. As of Monday, the petition had received 415 signatures
said he first heard about Hawkins several years ago from longtime Glen Rock resident Jon Cole
Jackson also attended Central School and sees putting Hawkins' name on it as a way to let more residents know about the hometown hero and the accomplishments of his too-short life
"I think like a lot of people in Glen Rock
never realized the connection of Thomas Hawkins to the school and being a Tuskegee Airman," Jackson said
"It was 80 years ago this year that he was killed in action in Italy
Given his stature with the Tuskegee Airmen and part of the move to desegregate the armed services
it might seem fitting to name in his honor."
Who was Thomas Hawkins?Details posted on the website of the Glen Rock Historical & Preservation Society and other sites document Hawkins' place in the 332nd Fighter Group of the U.S
They are remembered today as the Tuskegee Airmen
named for the historically Black Tuskegee Institute in Alabama
They were considered among the best pilots in the Army Air Forces and did not lose a single air bomber on an escort mission between September 1944 and March 1945
He served for two years and was awarded the Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster in early 1945
whom he married in Alabama on Christmas Day 1943
After graduating from Ridgewood High in 1942
Hawkins spent almost a year at Temple University's School of Chiropody
who once served on the Glen Rock Board of Education
approached the board 10 years before with the idea of putting Hawkins' name on Central School
Jackson said he decided to start his petition this month in conjunction with Black History Month and the 80th anniversary of Hawkins' death
The proposal has gotten positive feedback from alumni
he has not gotten much response from school board members and borough officials
"I did hear back from one of the [former] council members who said she was fully in support of it," Jackson said
"I have not heard back from any board members directly
but I'm hoping they will see the traction among school alumni and town residents will give it consideration."
Glen Rock Board of Education President Damali Robinson said in a statement to NorthJersey.com: "We are aware of Mr
Jackson’s petition and are currently reviewing his request
The Glen Rock Board of Education is committed to carefully considering all proposals
especially when it comes to decisions as significant as renaming a school
we are conducting the appropriate due diligence to ensure the process is thoughtful and transparent
Once we have gathered enough information we will put the item on an agenda for discussion," Robinson said
Jackson said he will continue to collect signatures and hopes to present them at the next school board meeting on Feb
He hopes his suggestion to include Hawkins but keep "Central" in the school's name will allay any fears from residents that the school's traditional name would be erased
Cole said he understands that people in Glen Rock may continue to refer to Central School by its old name
But adding Hawkins' name would not be completely out of character
as other schools in the borough are named for people

an elementary school at 380 Harristown Road
is named for a teacher in the Glen Rock school system
"We are very respectful of those sitting on the Board of Education and the time and contribution they make
and we don't want the petition to in any way seem like we are steamrolling their process," Cole said
"The purpose of the petition was for us to prove to ourselves that this idea that was a no-brainer had public support
and we have been thrilled to find out it is true."

GLEN ROCK − When that “here we go again” feeling started to creep in
The all-time leading scorer in Glen Rock history netted the first five points of overtime
helping the top-seeded Panthers survive No
The same two teams had met in last year’s sectional semifinals
the Vikings trailed by 8 entering the fourth
They forced the extra period when senior Alex Fessel drained a corner three with 9 seconds left in regulation
“But we’ve grinded out a ton of close games
The boys advanced to Wednesday’s Group 2 state semifinal in Franklin Township
where they will face North Section 2 champ Madison at 7:30 p.m
I was actually with the girls as an assistant,” Glen Rock boys coach Jason Mittelman said
because [boys] basketball is an afterthought in this town
You’ll never do anything or have any impact.’
so we’ve been building for a long time now.”
Vernon (18-11) fell to a Bergen County school in the North 1
Group 2 final for the second year in a row
Fessel actually hit three huge triples in the fourth quarter
the second of which tied the game at 44 with 1:56 left
Mangione went to the line for two free throws with 25.8 seconds remaining and the Panthers up
His first shot went halfway home and popped out
but he made the second to assure that a Vernon three could only tie it
taking a cross-court inbound pass from Mikey Pecciraro and splash it home with a hand in his face
Game balls► Mangione finished with 24 points and 5 assists
► Zach Ashkenazy chipped in 13 points for the Panthers
and senior Sam Viggiano led them in rebounds with 7
► Fessel ended up with a game-high 26 points
and he shot the Vikings’ only free throws of the game in OT
we look at that banner and see all the division titles
But this is really what we were focused on,” said Mangione
who eventually will get his name on the Glen Rock 1,000-point scorers banner as well
“It’s one thing to score a lot of personal points
