Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell choked back tears during Friday’s funeral service for Khyree Jackson at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden
O’Connell recalled a difficult conversation he had with the rookie cornerback several months ago, before Jackson died in a car crash in Prince George’s County, Maryland, earlier this month.
“He had only been a Viking for a few weeks
and we had determined that he had a shoulder injury,” he said
O’Connell said it hadn’t stopped Jackson during his college career
but the coaching team decided it had to be fixed
“Khyree was faced with two choices: one
miss some time and eventually work his way back during the regular season
commit to rehabbing all summer long.”
O’Connell said the second choice would mean Jackson would miss out on celebrating his draft pick and would have to go through months of training through the pain
most players in our league don’t think twice about,” O’Connell added
He told his coaches he didn’t want to miss the opportunity to help his teammates during the regular season
“He cared about being a good teammate
and committing to working hard for something that was bigger than himself,” O’Connell said
The Vikings will be setting up Jackson’s locker and wearing KJ decals on their helmets this season in tribute.
Jackson, 24, of Waldorf, was killed July 6 when another driver rammed into the Dodge Charger he was traveling in on Route 4 near Joint Base Andrews. Two of his friends and former Wise High School teammates were also killed in the early morning crash
had gone on to play for the University of Maryland
His Wise High School English teacher Nathalie Rosales said Hazel lit up every room with his infectious smile
“Isaiah was a kind soul who loved deeply and made a lasting impact on everyone he met,” Rosales said during the joint funeral service for Hazel and Jackson
Maryland State Police said a preliminary investigation indicated the driver that hit their car was speeding

GLENARDEN, Md. (ABC7) — If you want to know what makes Glenarden Woods Elementary a two-time Blue Ribbon award winner, just ask the students.
"We always have fun projects to do and there's always something new to learn at this school," said student Genesis Melgar.
On Tuesday, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced that just six schools in the state had earned Blue Ribbon status, and the opportunity to compete for a National Blue Ribbon.
Glenarden Woods principal Cecelia Jones-Bowlding says that means a lot to her and her staff.
"For a governor to take time in his day to honor schools that are doing exemplary work speaks volumes about who we are," saidJones-Bowlding.
On a tour, she explained that the recently renovated school for talented and gifted students provides unique learning spaces.
Glenarden Woods boasts 82 percent English language proficiency on state tests, 79 percent in math and in the new state scoring system, the school won the maximum five stars.
"The staff is great and we have fabulous parents. Those two primary keys are absolutely significant in having a great school," said Jones-Bowlding.
Jones-Bowlding has already started the process to compete for the National Blue Ribbon award.

The family of Deondre Johnson is feeling some relief Thursday after a teenager was convicted of shooting the toddler in the face in August of 2011.
Devon Matos, 17, of Fort Washington, was found guilty Thursday for his role in the August 2011 shooting in Glenarden, where 23-month-old Deondre was shot in the face. Matos was convicted of two counts each of assault and handgun charges, in addition to one count of reckless endangerment.
"Today's verdict removes a dangerous individual from our streets and I hope it will aid in the healing process for the Johnson family and their community," Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said in a statement.
It was on Aug. 22, 2011 that Shaneka Johnson and Deondre were outside their apartment building in the 3000 block of Brightseat Road when gunfire erupted. Deondre, who was struck in the face by a bullet, suffered grave injuries.
Authorities say that while Deondre clearly wasn't the target, Matos should have never had a gun in the first place.
"Gun violence in our community and in this country is out of control," Prince George's County Police Chief Mark McGaw said.
Deondre is still recovering; he still faces several surgeries, though, and continues to use a tracheotomy tube to help him breathe. Matos, in the meantime, is scheduled to be sentenced on June 8.
