Originally built in 1952, the Glenmont Shopping Center
known for its iconic “Arcade” sign
holds fond memories for county residents who grew up between the 1950s and 1990s
many have called for the area’s redevelopment
a satirical news website known for its fictional and humorous takes on Montgomery County’s current events
The site decided to “step in” with a tongue-in-cheek update on the future of the shopping center
The Montgonion wrote that “Glenmont Galleria will boast a distinctive collection of high-end retail shops that includes over 30 exclusive-to-market designers like Cartier
The mall anchors include Bloomingdale’s
we’ve received about a dozen messages asking us about the plans as a whole or specific questions about the businesses that would be involved with the make-believe mall
Last week, a “coming soon” banner for the Glenmont Galleria (shown in our featured photo) was placed in front of the shopping center. An article was even published in The Patch announcing the sign was up for the upcoming mall that would “include anchors Bloomingdale’s
and Nordstrom” and noted that “The Galleria will also have a bowling alley and indoor ski center.”
An update earlier this week by The Montgonion shared the news of the sign being vandalized
Though the sign was actually partially destroyed
the fictional Wheaton Sheriff’s Office isn’t really offering a $5,000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of the vandal– in case the line between reality and fiction has been blurred for you
We caught up with the publisher of The Montgonion, who shared a little insight as to why the initial article was ever written. “I grew up in Montgomery County. I bowled at Tuffy Leemans
It was a wonderful shopping center that everybody went to
It has been a blight on the county in the last two decades and it has gotten so much worse in the last five years.” he said
“There are so many beautiful new things in MoCo with plans for so many more
I just want to create a conversation around Glenmont
which the publisher tells us has been read by more than 20,000 people in the last year
has received quite the response with several people not realizing that it’s satire
Some are saying “Thank goodness something is finally happening” while others are unhappy with the high end stores that are being advertised “Wait a minute
Why is Bloomingdale’s opening in Glenmont?”
The actual redevelopment of the Glenmont Shopping Center has faced several challenges
The shopping center is owner by several entities and is part of a broader area that requires careful planning and zoning changes
Long-term redevelopment often involves rezoning for mixed-use projects
which can be a slow and bureaucratic process involving county approvals and community input
Redevelopment proposals often have to balance the interests of existing residents
Local communities sometimes push back against certain development plans
particularly if they fear displacement or loss of the area’s character
As the satirical saga of the “Glenmont Galleria” continues to gain attention
it highlights the real frustrations and hopes surrounding the long-stalled redevelopment of the Glenmont Shopping Center
While the fictional mall will never materialize
the public response underscores a desire for change by many in the area
The Montgonion’s playful take on the issue has sparked conversations
but the future of Glenmont remains uncertain

In coordination with Montgomery County and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro)
the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the State Highway Administration (SHA) have agreed to make almost seven miles of bus-only lanes on MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) between Silver Spring and Glenmont permanent
Per MDOT SHA: “The temporary lanes are permanent effective immediately
and SHA will begin adjusting the permanent bus-only lanes for revised operational hours beginning in spring 2025
The bus-only lanes were installed last summer to efficiently transport bus riders during Metro work that closed several stations along the Metro Red Line
That work was needed to build connections with the Maryland Transit Administration’s future Purple Line light rail system
In addition to designating a lane for bus-only use
traffic signal timing was adjusted to prioritize bus movements and help reduce traffic impact along the corridor
in collaboration with project partners Montgomery County Department of Transportation and Metro
allowed extension of the bus-only lanes as a pilot project through December to conduct additional evaluation
As a result of feedback gathered at a November public meeting attended by residents
businesses and riders of Metro and county Ride On buses
operation of the bus-only lanes will be altered by Spring 2025 to peak hours only – 6:30 a.m
the lanes will be made available for other uses as determined by the signage restrictions in place along the road
including many restrictions which predated the bus lane pilot
along with associated signage to reflect the new hours
The project partners will continue to work together to evaluate future design improvements
“The pilot program clearly showed transit benefits of the dedicated bus lanes
providing additional convenience and reliability for those in our community who count on transit for jobs
education and other necessities,” said State Highway Administrator Will Pines
“By limiting the bus lane operations to peak hours only and weekdays only
we will strike a balance between providing those benefits while limiting the impact on other roadway users and responding to business needs.”
Dedicated bus lanes generally reduce travel times and improve travel reliability for bus riders
Increased bus ridership improves the utility of roadways by moving more people within the road’s limited area
It can also reduce the number of cars on the road
which in turn reduces greenhouse gas emissions and congestion from single occupancy vehicles
Data from the Georgia Avenue bus lane pilot found that the pilot increased bus speeds by as much as 32% and increased bus reliability by 18%
average car and truck speeds in rush hours showed a decrease of 8% to 12% in speeds
Montgomery County provided parking and loading alternatives in Wheaton and Silver Spring
which were summarized in the MD 97 Bus Lane Pilot Facts Sheet
signage predating the bus lane pilot restricted stopping in the lane during peak hours in many of these business areas
SHA’s move to limit bus-lane operations to peak hours only and weekdays only will help to better align with these historical lane restrictions
This month both Montgomery County and Metro formally requested that the SHA make the bus-only lane permanent
Letters from the agencies and additional information is available on the Project Portal page
along with community feedback and the results from the bus lane pilot
formed the basis for the State Highway Administration’s decision the make the pilot project permanent
“We want to thank the Maryland Department of Transportation and Montgomery County Department of Transportation for collaborating with Metro on making these vital bus lanes on Georgia Avenue permanent,” said Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke
most efficiently and these bus lanes are multiplying that effect and providing a great benefit to bus customers.”

A Glenmont man’s Facebook account was hacked during the holidays
His Facebook friend fell for the scammer’s tricks
The man’s post said he was selling six Buffalo Bills season tickets
However, he wasn’t the one who posted it
Both parties wanted to remain anonymous for this 13Investigates report

Facebook even alerted him in an email that someone logged into his account near Jacksonville
The attempts to secure his account didn’t work
The Slingerlands woman sent a direct message to the person
She said she was interested in buying those tickets
She was then asked to send $300 more for a parking pass and a ticket transfer fee
The woman told 13Investigates there were red flags at every turn
but still trusted it because she thought it was her Facebook friend
She also called the Buffalo Bills ticket box office
who told her they never charge for a ticket transfer
That’s when the woman called Bethlehem Police
The man then got a visit from an officer at his Glenmont home
and he got text messages from various friends asking about those supposed Buffalo Bills tickets
The man apologized for the incident happening and the officer left
The man told 13Investigates he reported the hack to the Federal Trade Commission and the New York Attorney General’s Office
The woman is now disputing $880 with her bank

I asked MCPD’s communications office whether the press release was related to the incident reported by the principals
Second, I filed a Maryland Public Information Act (MPIA) request for records on the case number (240041766) associated with the first incident. That case number is listed on Data.montgomerycountymd.gov as shown in the screenshot below
MCPD refused to supply records in response to my request
Pursuant to the Maryland Public Information Act Title 4 of the General Provisions of the Maryland Code Section GP § 4-301
permission to inspect these records is denied
These records are subject to other law: Courts and Judicial Proceedings Article of the Maryland Code
titled “Confidentiality of Records” subtitle “Police Records” Section 3-8A-27 (a)(1)
prohibits disclosure of records associated with a juvenile absent a court order
The Courts and Judicial Proceeding Article of the Maryland Code also known as “other law,” supersedes the Maryland Public Information Act
The information you have requested cannot be released at this time
Per the General Provisions of the Maryland Public Information Act Section 4-351(b)(1)
These records are associated with an open case and are investigatory in nature
Disclosure at this time would interfere with valid and proper law enforcement proceedings
MCPS cited federal privacy law and MCPD cited state laws on juvenile police records and active investigations
not much is publicly known about what happened
Did the relevant students attend school that day
Was the gun cited in the reports brought to school before the incidents
Note that the timing of the first incident occurred one hour after high school release and a half hour after middle school release
If the answer to both of these questions is no
then MCPS had no significant involvement in the incidents
the fact that the three principals commented suggest that there was at least some relevance to the schools
are the two arrested students back in school today or will they be at some point in the near future
This is a hard question for MCPS to answer as it impinges on student privacy
but I bet a lot of parents are thinking about this
One thing I have heard many times from parents is the difficulty of obtaining information about specific criminal incidents involving schools. I am a parent of a student at one of these schools, and from my personal experience, I can see that these parents have a point! Superintendent Thomas Taylor has vowed to increase transparency in MCPS
but this incident challenges his ability to do so
Council Member Natali Fani-González, whose district includes these three schools, and the state legislators from Districts 18 and 19 have scheduled a public safety town hall on September 25. (You can RSVP here.) Chief of Police Marc Yamada will be in attendance
I hope Chief Yamada will be prepared to discuss this issue at the event
Two Juveniles Charged in Connection to Glenmont Shooting
MD – A 15-year-old male and 13-year-old male are being charged with multiple charges of first-degree assault following a shooting on Tuesday
4th District officers were dispatched to a shooting in progress in the 2300 block of Glenmont Circle
detectives determined a confrontation amongst the 15-year-old and 13-year-old suspects and several juvenile victims occurred
the victims ran away and the suspects chased after them
a vehicle was in the area of the 2300 block of Glenmont Cir
when the 15-year-old suspect shot at the vehicle occupants
The two occupants of the vehicle were uninjured
Shell casings were recovered from the scene
Both suspects are currently in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Services
I was able to obtain two dispatch audios which may be relevant to the incident that are embedded below
discusses a “possible shooting” in the area of 2312 Glenmont Circle
This street is directly behind the 4th District police station
“Callers are reporting two people shooting each other with firearms.” The two callers disagreed on the details
The second dispatch audio was dated at 5:13 PM on Tuesday
are going to be the same for the two events
So we’re going to end up splitting this into two different CR numbers
Did this second dispatch audio reference the same incident as the first
I contacted MCPD’s communications office and asked for information about the incident reported by the principals
The office told me to file a Maryland Public Information Act request so I did so
This occurred before MCPD’s press release was published
I am the parent of a student at one of these schools
I am displeased that I was told to file a Maryland Public Information Act request
which under state law may take up to 30 days to answer
in order to obtain meaningful information about a “gun-related incident” relevant to my kid’s school
An incident of this kind deserves more discussion with the public
I have asked MCPD’s communications office whether the incident in the press release is related to the incident reported by the MCPS principals
I hope we learn more about what transpired in coming days
