– A former Boy Scouts troop leader is facing a sexual battery charge in Miami-Dade County after police said a man came forward to report that he abused him as a young boy five decades ago
was taken into custody in Clay County under an Oct
1 arrest warrant and transferred to the Miami-Dade jail system Friday morning
told investigators the abuse began when he was roughly 8 to 10 years old and a member of a Boy Scouts troop in what was then Dade County
According to an arrest warrant from the Miami-Dade Police Department, detectives began looking into Motes, “a long-time leader within the organization,” in 2022 after the victim filed claims with the Boy Scouts of America amid a “nationwide appeal” from the organization for victims of sexual abuse to come forward
Police said BSA requested that its South Florida Council forward the claim
which “documented multiple instances of sexual abuse,” to MDPD
The warrant states that detectives interviewed the victim in November 2022
veteran MDPD Special Victims Bureau Detective Paul Espana wrote that the victim was part of Troop 272 while in elementary school and Motes “fostered a close relationship” with the boy while serving as a leader
used that relationship to “manipulate and sexually abuse” the young boy
Authorities said the victim was able to “recall and describe certain incidents in detail,” including a specific incident in which Motes abused him while parked in a vehicle at Twin Island Lake in the unincorporated Glenvar Heights area
The victim told police that Motes “would provide him with tokens related to his military service as gifts or rewards,” which he kept and was able to show detectives
The warrant states that police found probable cause to have Motes jailed on a count of sexual battery on a child
he remained held without bond in the Metrowest Detention Center

Add South Miami Mayor Javier Fernández to the list of elected officials backing Miami-Dade School Board member Lucia Báez-Geller’s bid to represent Florida’s 27th Congressional District
Báez-Geller’s campaign this week announced an endorsement from Fernández, a former state lawmaker who won the South Miami mayoralty in 2022
Fernández was effusive in an accompanying statement
“Lucia Báez-Geller consistently prioritizes people over politics
She has demonstrated courage by advocating for the rights of the voiceless and marginalized within the School Board
In an era characterized by congressional gridlock
we require a public servant who prioritizes the interests of (CD 27) constituents,” he said
“This is why I am proud to endorse Lucia Báez-Geller for Florida’s 27th Congressional District.”
Bay Harbor Islands Council member Molly Diallo and North Miami Council member Scott Galvin

“Mayor Fernández’s commitment to public service and tireless advocacy for our community exemplify true leadership
I am grateful for his support and look forward to working together to serve the people of our district.”
Báez-Geller is running to unseat Republican U.S. Rep. María Elvira Salazar. She faces one Democratic Primary opponent, former Key Biscayne Mayor Mike Davey, who raised $314,000 in just five weeks last quarter
Both trailed Salazar, who collected $474,000 in the first three months of 2024 to lead Primary challenger Royland Lara, who reported no first-quarter campaign finance activity but qualified for the race, according to state records

The family of a man killed in a May 2019 motorcycle crash with a Miami-Dade County bus will receive $950,000 through legislation Gov
the county was able to pay $300,000 without action by the Legislature
Jason Sanchez, 33, was traveling on his 2009 Yamaha motorbike on Southwest 107th Avenue in West Miami-Dade on May 13, 2019, when a Metrobus driver improperly advanced into an intersection
Sanchez took all necessary precautions that day
He wore a helmet and traveled “at or below the posted speed limit.” But he did not have enough time to react when the bus driver failed to stop at the marked intersection at Southwest 176th Street and 107th Avenue
Sanchez sustained “fatal blunt force injuries,” the lawsuit said
For the $950,000 balance of the settlement to reach Sanchez’s family, a lawmaker had to take up the cause. Doral Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez and Miami Rep. Juan Carlos Porras did so through legislation (SB 6) that received near-uniform support in both chambers of the Legislature
Only Gainesville Sen. Keith Perry, a fellow Republican, voted “no.” He explained while discussing separate but similar legislation that while he sympathizes with the aggrieved parties seeking recompense
he believes bypassing governmental payout caps circumvents rather than adheres to state law
SB 6 and measures like it are classified as “claims bills” or “relief acts” and are a means of compensating a person or entity for injuries or losses caused by the negligence or error of a public officer or agency
They arise when appropriate damages exceed what is allowable under Florida’s sovereign immunity laws
which protect governments from costly lawsuits by limiting what can be paid without legislative action
Currently, the Legislature must approve settlements higher than $200,000 per person and $300,000 per incident. Lawmakers have tried for years to raise those caps — last adjusted in 2010 — for years to no avail

– Neighbors living in Miami-Dade County's Glenvar Heights community compare it to a real-life version of the movie "Neighbors," in which a suburban family's peaceful street is invaded by a fraternity house
Except people living here said this is their reality
"The students are constantly having these late-night parties
walking drunk aimlessly," neighbor Jessica Cruz said
Cruz told Local 10 News investigative reporter Amy Viteri the neighborhood has become in many ways an extension of the University of Miami campus
They all belong to a fraternity," she said
referring to a large home in the 5500 block of Southwest 67th Avenue
Cruz said a handful of developers have bought up properties and some are building large multi-bedroom homes that are essentially off-campus dorms
Neighbors complain of late-night speeding and drunken behavior
particularly at the home on Southwest 67th Avenue
several school buses took people to the home for a party
there are several similar student rentals nearby
Photographs show cars parked haphazardly in yards and on the street
trash piles attracting rodents and even portable bathrooms in one yard
Police have been called to at least one of the homes several times
and Local 10 found several noise violation citations have been issued and paid
Cruz and other neighbors have joined together to hire an attorney
They have sent petitions to the county and written letters expressing their frustrations
"One of the neighbors was actually approached by the students and they kind of threatened him and said
Our landlord is well-connected with the county and nothing is going to happen to him,'" Cruz said
The home on Southwest 67th Avenue is owned by Julio Del Rey
own several properties in the area and the family is also politically connected
District 7 Commissioner Xavier Suarez told Viteri there is no special treatment in this case
"We're not influenced by any powerful person," Suarez said
Local 10 learned the Del Rey brothers contributed $10,000 each to the campaign of the commissioner's son
Commissioner Suarez told Viteri he was not aware of any contributions and said the county has taken action
the county sent a cease-and-desist letter to Julio Del Rey threatening a lawsuit
saying the county has never defined the term "one-family residence."
"People should have the expectation if they move into a residential neighborhood that they're not going to have frat houses next to their home," Commissioner Suarez said
that the house "was legally built and legally leased to the current tenants
Please note the honorable Marcia Del Rey has no ownership or stake in this property."
The statement also said Julio Del Rey has now decided not to renew the lease of the current tenants in an effort to be a good neighbor
Neighbors still had concerns about other properties owned by the Del Rey family
seven-bathroom home currently being built in South Miami and plans to build on an empty lot across from Cruz's home
where she said Jorge Del Rey originally planned to build an 11-bedroom
A representative for the family told Viteri the family now plans to sell the home being built in South Miami
They have downsized their plans to build on the empty lot across from Jessica Cruz
South Miami resident Theresa Galivan said some of her neighbors already have plans to move
in an effort to avoid problems like those in neighboring Glenvar Heights
The lease for the home on Southwest 67th Avenue is up in June
It was not immediately clear what is next for the property once the students move out

Florida’s 27th Congressional District is home to the costliest and most competitive U.S
pitting a Republican with two years of federal lawmaking experience against a Democratic state Senator with five years of legislating under her belt
U.S. Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a decorated former TV journalist, is defending against state Sen. Annette Taddeo, a small business owner who made history in 2017 as the first Latina Democrat to win a seat in the chamber
Both have roots in Latin American countries overrun by Marxist oppressors
West Miami and a slew of unincorporated neighborhoods compose CD 27
The district has alternated blue and red since longtime Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen retired in January 2019
It remains the most closely divided congressional district in South Florida
Both candidates performed strongly in the Aug
Salazar took 81% of the vote against a lone opponent
while Taddeo knocked off two adversaries with 68% of ballots cast in her favor
Salazar was born in Miami to Cuban expatriates who escaped Fidel Castro’s communist regime
while Taddeo fled Colombia as a teenager to escape communist terrorism
produced an ad painting Taddeo in a similar light for participating in an April 2018 panel discussion on expanding health care access alongside several other local politicians and groups
including the Miami chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America
entered politics in 2018 to succeed Ros-Lehtinen but lost that year to Democrat Donna Shalala
a former cabinet member in President Bill Clinton’s administration
Fighting “leaders in Congress on the left (who) want to implement socialism in this country” is the top platform issue listed on her website
establishing term limits for federally elected officials
environmental protection and broadening access to education
Taddeo, 55, leaned into her personal story this election cycle
she underwent 19 surgeries to correct a cleft lip
she fled to America — first to Alabama — after the Marxist guerilla group FARC kidnapped her father
For nearly 30 years, she’s run LanguageSpeak
a Miami-based translation services company
when she unsuccessfully tried to unseat Ros-Lehtinen
a moderate Republican with some liberal leanings
She also ran as former Gov. Charlie Crist’s running mate during the 2014 gubernatorial race. She ran this year against Crist and Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried in the Democratic Primary for the Governor until June, when she switched to the CD 27 contest
Her platform this election prioritizes access to affordable education and health care
supporting measures to improve Florida’s water cleanliness
protecting the environment and strengthening American democracy
After reports arose of a voter registration scam in which Spanish-speaking Miami residents were tricked into switching their party affiliation from Democratic to Republican
Taddeo led an effort to determine who was responsible
She later convinced her Republican colleagues in Tallahassee to include language raising financial penalties for organizations whose employees alter voting registration forms without a person’s knowledge in legislation that will go into effect next year
Taddeo has also been unafraid to criticize her own party at the local and federal levels. In February, she and Republican Miami Sen. Ileana Garcia teamed up to lead the Senate in opposing Biden’s removal of FARC from the U.S
The vote cost her with the National Rifle Association, which gave her a “D” rating in September
the lowest ranking the organization gave any member of the GOP
The following month, she was among six Florida Republican members of Congress to vote for the Respect for Marriage Act to preserve national marriage equality
She also earned praise for supporting a bipartisan resolution reinstating federal limits on methane emissions from oil and gas producers
Her signature bill is the Dignity Act
a 532-page package that would create a pathway to citizenship for migrants living in the country illegally
The measure would create multiple programs through which undocumented residents can stay and work in the U.S
The money collected would fund retraining programs for U.S
workers and strengthen the southern border
The bill has yet to gain any traction in the House
which included a $12 million set-aside for DeSantis’ migrant-relocation program
the authorizing language specified the funds were for moving migrants out of Florida
Salazar also has perpetuated Trump’s false narrative there was systemic voter fraud in the 2020 election. Speaking on Miami station Radio Mambi on Jan. 11, 2021, she referenced a widely discredited conspiracy theory involving voter discrepancies in Pennsylvania
Two years after Americans elected Biden as President, there is still no evidence of voter fraud widespread or systemic enough to have swayed the outcome of the election
Taddeo raised $1.6 million and spent all but $45,000 of it by the beginning of November. Outside PACs provided assists, including actress Eva Longoria’s progressive PAC, Latino Victory Fund
a PAC targeting vulnerable Republicans across the country
Salazar carries into Election Day endorsements from most of her Republican peers in Congress, as well as nods from DeSantis
the South Florida Council of Firefighters and National Association of Police Organizations
Taddeo, meanwhile, has the backing of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Majority Leader Leader Steny Hoyer
Eric Swalwell and Debbie Wasserman Schultz
Her most newsworthy endorsement
came from former Florida GOP Chair Al Cárdenas on Oct
He said it was the first time in four decades he was backing a Democrat for Congress
that’s now a precondition for supporting anyone running for office: Is your country more important than your particular career

The four-way race for Miami-Dade County Commission’s open seat representing District 6 heated up last month with two rivals raising six figures — and in a virtual dead heat for fundraising
Coral Gables Commissioner Jorge Fors
raised more than $231,000 in May for his race to represent District 6 on the Commission
Between his personal account and his political committee, NextGen Florida Leadership
They are up against business owner Dariel Fernandez and Miami Springs Councilman Victor Vazquez
Cabrera Thursday received the endorsement of Hialeah Mayor Steve Bovo and four members of Hialeah’s City Council
“Hialeah needs courageous leadership on the County Commission to address issues like traffic
our quality of life and the affordability crisis,” Bovo said
Bovo was joined by Council President Carl Zogby
“He has my full backing and endorsement,” Bovo said
Fors, however, started the race with the endorsement of Rebeca Sosa
West Miami and Virginia Gardens; parts of Coral Gables
Hialeah and Miami; and several neighborhoods in Miami-Dade’s unincorporated area
Fors received his single biggest May donation — $10,000 — from Ortus Engineering in Miami
The real estate sector accounted for the largest sector of Fors’ support
he received $73,070 from real estate interests
Lawyers and law firms accounted for the second-largest category of donations
Four political committees also donated $1,000 each: New Leadership Network
Hialeah Fire PAC; Basic Principles in Miami; and Reform Government in Tampa
Conservative Choice political committee in Tallahassee sent $5,000
Fors sent most of the money out of his $43,339 in May expenses to Marin & Sons
He paid them $48,475 for a variety of items
with the largest being $20,950 for mailers
Fors’ donor list also shows $1,000 refunds given to his now-rival for the seat, Cabrera, and to the political committee of Cabrera’s wife, Republican Rep. Demi Busatta Cabrera
Commission candidate Cabrera received his biggest, single donation of the month from a Coral Gables political committee. Conservatives for a Better Florida sent him $60,000, which is future House Speaker Daniel Perez’s political committee. Republican Rep. Anthony Rodriguez’s committee
political committees sent him a total of $139,000
The biggest checks went to Miranda Advocacy in Cutler Bay
The Berthier Group in Coral Gables was paid $10,000 for political
communications and social media consulting
Fernandez, a business owner, meanwhile, netted a total of $15,136 in May for his campaign and has $26,488 to spend between his personal account and his political committee, Integrity in Government
holds a total of $20,597 in his campaign account
The campaigns were facing a deadline June 10 to report all financial activity through May 31
After months of mutual name-calling and accusations of impropriety
María Elvira Salazar has won the right to serve for another two years in Florida’s 27th Congressional District
With all ballots tallied by early Wednesday morning
Salazar had 57.3% of the 237,345 votes cast compared to 42.7% for Democratic state Sen
The outcome caps the costliest and what many predicted to be the most closely contested congressional race in South Florida this election cycle
It also marks the first time in eight years a political party retained control of CD 27
which encompasses all or part of the Miami-Dade County municipalities of Miami
The district also contains the unincorporated neighborhoods of Coral Terrace
The General Election race for CD 27 pitted Salazar, a decorated former TV journalist with two years of lawmaking experience, against Taddeo, a small business owner who made history in 2017 as the first Latina Democrat to win a seat in the chamber
Both candidates have long lived in Miami-Dade County
Taddeo fled Colombia as a teenager to escape communist terrorism
The move was an attempt to flip the script on the incumbent, who since her first run at public office has applied the “socialist” label to Democrats
this year produced an ad painting Taddeo in a similar light for participating in an April 2018 panel discussion on expanding health care access alongside several other local politicians and groups
entered politics in 2018 by running to succeed longtime Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
She lost that year to Democrat Donna Shalala
But she won their rematch two years later. As she continued to do this election cycle, Salazar targeted the district’s Spanish-speaking population frequently by radio, likening her opponent’s policy proposals to those of the Cuban oppressors and tying her to U.S
Fighting “leaders in Congress on the left (who) want to implement socialism in this country” was the top platform issue listed on Salazar’s website this cycle
She was also former Gov. Charlie Crist’s running mate during the 2014 gubernatorial race. Before switching to the CD 27 contest in June
she ran this year against Crist and Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried in the Democratic Primary for Governor
Taddeo’s platform this election prioritized access to affordable education and health care
After reports surfaced of a voter registration scam in which Spanish-speaking Miami residents were tricked into switching their party affiliation from Democratic to Republican
Taddeo spearheaded an effort to determine who was responsible
Taddeo was also unafraid to criticize her own party. In February, she and Republican Miami Sen. Ileana Garcia teamed up to lead the Senate in opposing Biden’s removal of FARC from the U.S
Her signature legislation is the Dignity Act
Salazar also perpetuated Trump’s false narrative that there was systemic voter fraud in the 2020 election. Speaking on Spanish-language Miami station Radio Mambi on Jan. 11, 2021, she referenced a widely discredited conspiracy theory involving voter discrepancies in Pennsylvania
Taddeo raised $1.6 million and spent all but $45,000 of it by early November. Outside PACs provided assists, including actress Eva Longoria’s progressive PAC, Latino Victory Fund
Taddeo, meanwhile, had backing from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Majority Leader Leader Steny Hoyer
The website FiveThirtyEight offered a less sunny forecast for the challenger
it gave Taddeo an 8% chance of winning based on 40,000 simulations of the election
Early voting in Miami-Dade didn’t help to brighten matters for Taddeo as more Republicans than Democrats casted ballots ahead of Election Day

Officials say smoke alarms were working and alerted occupants to the fire.
No one was injured in a structure fire Monday on Glenvar Heights Boulevard in Roanoke County.
According to a news release, Roanoke County Fire and Rescue responded to the report at about 3:45 p.m., in the 5000 block of Glenvar Heights Boulevard in the Fort Lewis community.
First arriving crews from Fort Lewis found heavy smoke inside the first floor of the two-story home, but the fire was brought under control in about 15 minutes, the release stated.
The home was occupied by one adult and one teenager at the time of the fire, but they and the family's three dogs made it out safely. One other adult was not at home at the time of the fire, the release added.
There was light smoke damage to the home, but the family likely will be able to remain there tonight, the report stated.
Units from Fort Lewis, the City of Salem, Masons Cove and North County responded to the fire, the release added.
