first-year coach Joe Mazzulla was at a low point But he believed that to truly chase greatness He was texting about it with Josh Waitzkin, a former child chess prodigy whose story was chronicled in the 1993 Oscar-nominated film “Searching for Bobby Fischer.” “He also knew it was time to take himself on.” The two had grown close that season after Waitzkin conducted a performance psychology seminar for the Celtics’ coaching staff Waitzkin urged Mazzulla to visit his home tucked away in a Costa Rican jungle where they would tear Mazzulla down to build him back up He wanted Mazzulla to walk barefoot on mountains amid dangerous wildlife He wanted Mazzulla to be tossed around by the Pacific Ocean “It’s a breaking point where if I’m going to be a head coach if we’re going to really go after something where Mazzulla would spend eight agonizing and beautiful days navigating Waitzkin’s “cave process.” He said it was everything he needed Today, Waitzkin is Mazzulla’s mentor, ally, and jiu-jitsu sparring partner His hiring as a Celtics consultant this season was never made public and few outside the organization are even aware he is here But he has become one of Mazzulla’s most trusted confidants as the coach tries to guide the Celtics to their second consecutive NBA championship “I need Josh to make me better so I can help the team be better,” Mazzulla said he was walking through New York’s Washington Square Park with his mother when he saw adults playing chess and when he sat down he felt as if he had rediscovered a lost memory and his unusual talent was obvious to the hardened players who became protective of the prodigy “It was this raucous crowd and it was like mental street-fighting,” Waitzkin said “They were teaching me their tricks and psychological tactics and I was learning from these brilliant mental gladiators.” Waitzkin won his first of eight junior national championships he played to a draw against Garry Kasparov when the Russian world champion was playing dozens of simultaneous games against children in New York City published “Searching for Bobby Fischer,” based on his son’s path to becoming a successor to the greatest American player ever Waitzkin was 16 when Paramount Pictures turned the book into a movie he was smothered with picture and autograph requests Girls slipped him their phone numbers and he appeared on television shows “I’d be competing against world-class grandmasters who I had huge respect for and looked up to “It created these complex dynamics in my life Waitzkin traveled through Eastern Europe and began a period of self-exploration He studied tai chi as a form of meditation and progressed to tai chi push hands a mix of psychological and physical combat in which competitors attempt to disrupt their opponent’s balance Waitzkin won several national championships and in 2004 captured a push hands world title It is extremely hard to be among the best in the world at one thing and almost unfathomable to be among the best at two But Waitzkin concluded that he was not necessarily born a gifted chess player or martial artist; he was an elite learner After a back injury ended his fighting career, Waitzkin shared his perspectives in his 2008 book, “The Art of Learning: An Inner Journey to Optimal Performance.” He never imagined that 15 years later it would spark a connection with an NBA team and its relentless Celtics director of growth and development Art Horne seeks out people who could help the organization view competition through different prisms He was fascinated by Waitzkin’s book and contacted him during the 2022-23 season so he tells his team to decline 100 requests before considering one He purchased copies of Waitzkin’s book for Celtics coaches and staffers before organizing a video conference with him Mazzulla was at his son’s basketball practice during the call that focused on performance psychology he went to a quiet room next to the gym and peppered Waitzkin with questions “I could just feel in that conversation I was pushing on some edges and I felt the authenticity and all-in of this man,” Waitzkin said “It’s a beautiful thing when you run into a leader who walks the talk so completely and wants to train as hard as anyone.” When Mazzulla attended Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick he used to squeeze in quick basketball workouts during bathroom breaks from class When he became coach at Division 2 Fairmont State he tried to persuade his wife to live in an RV in the school gym’s parking lot so the court would always be just steps away he had found a rare person with similar views on pushing limits “This guy beat the Russians in chess and then went into Taiwan and beat the natives in tai chi so he’s able to take on things,” Mazzulla said “If you’re going to coach the Celtics you must be able to take on the type of stuff he did I just felt he could take us to another level.” “It felt like we just never could gain traction on changing the environment, on giving us a chance,” Mazzulla said. “I felt like that was where I failed as a coach most of that year.” For Mazzulla and Waitzkin, that game was the perfect place to start a deep dive. Despite the methodical nature of chess, massive momentum swings are common. Waitzkin succeeded by identifying tension in opponents. He could usually feel when and why they were going to break. Waitzkin studied the cracks in that collapse against the Nets, along with other runs involving the Celtics, and helped Mazzulla focus on the psychology of how to stop, start, and maintain surges. They analyzed body language and warning signs. Waitzkin said the best chess players maintain tension longer than the weaker ones. The Celtics needed to become the best chess players. “Josh is great at finding certain segments of the game where it either went really well or it didn’t go well and seeing it from a nontactical perspective,” Mazzulla said. “It’s more getting into the mind of an individual fighter or performer.” Mazzulla and Waitzkin began exchanging text messages before and after most games, and three points of emphasis emerged: managing momentum, embracing tension, and handling failure. That final part arrived that May. Much like Mazzulla, Waitzkin is a public figure who prefers to live privately. In interviews for this story, he declined to reveal even the general geographic location of his home in Costa Rica. “You can just say it’s where the jungle meets the Pacific,” he said. He had never invited a client to his home for a weeklong stay before he asked Mazzulla to visit for the teardown process after that 2023 loss to the Heat. “At this point I was all-in on whatever I needed to do as a coach,” Mazzulla said, “but because of Josh’s authenticity and how deep he’s willing to go to push people, it can be uncomfortable. So as all-in as I was on talking about it, I was kind of like, ‘Ah, you know, some of this is going to be difficult.’ ” When Mazzulla told his wife about the trip, he framed it as a family vacation. Mazzulla’s stepson, Mikey, and son, Manny, slept in a luxury treehouse, and they and Camai spent days soaking up Costa Rica’s beauty with Waitzkin’s wife, Desi, and the couple’s sons, Charlie and Jack. Mazzulla’s stay was not as idyllic. His prior surfing experience consisted of boogie boarding in light waves in New England. “I’d never done what the hell we did down there,” he said. In Costa Rica, May is the start of the “green season” on the Pacific Coast, when southern swells produce larger, more powerful waves capable of punching a hole in a novice surfer. Waitzkin handed Mazzulla a board and challenged him to figure it out, with the help of an instructor. Mazzulla gulped saltwater and fought to catch his breath. “[Waitzkin] can make something that isn’t really correlated to the NBA season feel like it’s a practice,” Mazzulla said. “You’re falling or getting tossed around for two or three hours, and how do you handle it? There were moments after the eighth, ninth time, I didn’t really feel like getting up and doing it again, but you don’t have a choice.” ‘I’d never done what the hell we did down there.’ Joe Mazzulla on his trip to visit Josh Waitzkin in Costa Rica Share on facebookWaitzkin who is 5 feet 9 inches with a stocky build and curly black hair every part of your being needs to be alive,” Waitzkin said If you step on something that’s going to hurt you All the ways we cushion ourselves from feeling in civilization when you’re walking barefoot in the jungle none of that is there.” they alternated between sweating in 230-degree saunas and plunging into 40-degree cold tubs was for physical torment to expose mental cracks and to challenge Mazzulla to find ways to emerge from discomfort “The heartbreak and the brokenness are what lead to the strength,” Waitzkin said There were conversations about winning and losing the 48-year-old Waitzkin would challenge Mazzulla with a concept and Mazzulla would tell Waitzkin that the idea wasn’t feasible He came to realize this mind-set was hindering him in coaching “One of the best things Josh does is he interrogates you “You’re constantly being interrogated by him Although Waitzkin’s jungle home is isolated from society such as a television and an internet connection the two watched the Heat and Nuggets play in the NBA Finals It was difficult for Mazzulla because he wanted to be stalking those sidelines and figuring out how to become an NBA champion Waitzkin muted the broadcast and asked Mazzulla to be the soundtrack He was mesmerized as Mazzulla correctly predicted actions and pointed out players’ psychological tells “Talk about seeing a basketball genius in flow,” Waitzkin said Mazzulla returned from Costa Rica eager and rejuvenated with a road map of how he would help the Celtics move forward He made several trips to Boston last season and when he was unable to watch games live assistant coach Matt Reynolds sent condensed versions Waitzkin would provide feedback related to chess or tai chi principles and constantly hunted for useful clues Waitzkin can identify players who show vulnerabilities such as being uncomfortable with physicality The coaching staff often adds his evaluations to scouting reports “If you can see the thing they’re protecting,” Waitzkin said “it can open up a torrent of insight about their weaknesses.” When Celtics consultant Jeff Van Gundy left to join the Clippers’ coaching staff after Boston won the NBA title last June Mazzulla asked president of basketball operations Brad Stevens to consider Waitzkin for the role It would be an unusual move considering Waitzkin’s lack of basketball experience Waitzkin spent about one week per month in Boston this season and plans to be with the team for this entire playoff run Guard Derrick White said Waitzkin had useful advice about connecting with referees urging him to learn as much as possible about their personalities to better grasp their mind-sets during a game Waitzkin’s bond with Mazzulla remains most critical. On game days, they usually meet up around 11 a.m. and spend hours together, sparring on jiu-jitsu mats discussing psychological tells of opponents they sat at a conference table in Mazzulla’s sprawling office that sits above the Auerbach Center practice court An elegant chess board the Celtics brought in sat on a smaller table near the wall Mazzulla and Waitzkin have not played together yet but the first time Waitzkin walked past the board he pointed out that the pieces were arranged incorrectly They finish each other’s sentences or nod in agreement or admiration while the other talks Mazzulla brings up one chapter of Waitzkin’s book that resonated with him centered on the simple act of walking in the rain Waitzkin says you can tell a lot about someone by how they react to rainfall and others simply carry on as if the sun was shining Mazzulla believes he has become comfortable walking in the rain “One thing I’ve seen Joe do is exquisitely embrace adversity “as opposed to having a little piece of you that wants a way out.” Adam Himmelsbach can be reached at adam.himmelsbach@globe.com. Ethical questions dogged the senator during his first Senate run in 2006, and in 2015, he was charged in a federal bribery case involving a Florida eye doctor; the case ultimately ended in a mistrial and Menendez’s fellow Democrats and Senate colleagues largely stuck behind him and when Menendez refused to resign his seat Andy Kim launched a primary challenge against him After repeated attempts to delay or derail the case went nowhere, Menendez’s eight-week trial began last May, and it ended in jurors convicting him on all counts in July. Find out more ‘The only thing unique about slavery in the West is that in the West it was abolished’ By Katy Grimes A Globe article Saturday addressed several grave issues California Democrats are supporting securing their position on the wrong side of history This past week they blocked a bill to make purchasing sex from 16-17-year-olds a felony The Globe has been saying for several years now that the stupid people are in charge of everything in California and Democrats proved it beyond a shadow of a doubt this past week They also proved that they will say and do anything for money because no actual human with a soul could advocate for policies that harm children the way purschasing sex from teenagers does One of the other issues is reparations: AB 57 is one of 16 reparations bills this year in the legislature The reparations bill proposes to give at least 10% of funds from California Housing Finance Agency’s home purchase assistance program to qualified individuals who are descendants of formerly enslaved people The Legislative Black Caucus claims this is about “its push for justice and equality.” Nope. Reparations are just a shakedown, the Globe reported A reader who says she is a “reparations activist,” took us to task I take issue with your characterization of CLBC bills (California Legislative Black Caucus) this year as “reparations” Please review the recommendations from the California Task Force Report and compare them to what has been presented Additionally reparations for ANY other group of individuals in this country and in particular the state of California involve DIRECT CASH PAYMENTS I don’t see any articles where you have problems with payments to Jewish holocaust survivors I can only conclude your view point against reparations for Black Californians is an anti Black racist view point A shame as former Assemblyman Bill Essayli actually worked with reparations activists to introduce AB1315 earlier this year…COPE Here is the 2025 Black Caucus legislative package of bills The Globe thought long a hard on the response, reflecting on the many years of articles we have written on this topic In 2023, the Globe reported on both the San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee and State Reparations Task Force which were quite openly expanding reparations beyond slavery It became a grab and hustle for all grievances They said the quiet parts aloud: “the racial wealth gap in the state of California.” As the Globe reported in December 2022 Reparations task force member Jovan Scott Lewis said: “Spoiler-alert: We don’t yet know the racial wealth gap in the state of California.” This is the preliminary conversation to figure out what we know and what we don’t know.” Remember this: “Racial wealth gap.” The catch all phrase that would serve to justify anything the committees wanted Cheryl Grills said: “Racial terror leads to racial trauma … also known as race-based traumatic stress.” And aren’t there laws on the books prohibiting racial preferences via affirmative action Yes. Proposition 209 and prohibits discrimination or preferential treatment by the state authored by then-Assemblywoman Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) was passed by the California legislature in 2020 “it now appears that the California Reparations Task Force has taken up the affirmative action mantle and will backdoor granting preferential treatment based on race via their final recommendations to the California Legislature.” Now on to history and facts on slavery that have not changed over time. Stefan Spath, Executive Director for the Foundation for Economic Education, argued this some years ago but the facts and history has not changed: A California Globe reader left a rather insightful comment on one of our articles about proposed reparations bills: “I’m OK with reparations if only Democrats get the bill to pay for this No Republican should be paying for reparations A local historian friend shared with the Globe: “In the [Sacramento] Land Park area (there is a monument marker in the park) was Camp Union Sutterville where seven regiments of infantry and smaller specialized units were trained and participated primarily in two Union moves One was to replace regular army troops in the west and they garrisoned posts all the way to Salt Lake City founding an army base in that area that is still active The other went to southern California and joined units raised in that area Confederates had occupied what is now Arizona and New Mexico up to the California border Camp Union troops were involved with pushing them back into Texas and when the war ended Sacramento troops were well established in that state.” Every kid in California should be taught this rather than the steady stream of “reparations activism.” Seems like a bunch of black politicians (who were never slaves nor were their parents grandparents or great grandparents) voting themselves (and all their pals) free money and perks “Nearly all ethnic groups that migrated to America including Chinese and European Jews were all subjected to harsh discrimination ethnic groups developed the occupational skills and cultural norms necessary to fully assimilate and rise to higher socioeconomic levels within the mainstream American culture.” This statement by KG is basically true although many groups have retained their cultural identities to this day – for example blacks would point out that these immigrants came voluntarily Is this difference big enough to explain the inability or unwillingness or hinderance to assimilate The assimilation for other groups often occurs through generational inter-marriage Black politicians who advocate reparations will get no sympathy from those who have witnessed what black control of cities like Detroit and Chicago have done for their black constituents’ quality of life Despite black political power and control and billions of dollars of federal aid since the 1960’s black communities have made little progress Is this really due to the legacy of slavery or something else Perhaps we should ask the question: Who are the REAL racists Never mind that California was never a slave state but it’s ironic that Black Democrats in the legislature keep pushing for reparations when Democrats have a long and ugly history of slavery Why should other racial and ethnic groups in California pay reparations to a race of people who were never slaves It’s legislative Democrats who need to apologize and be held accountable for the sins of their Democrat predecessors They are the ones who should be paying reparations Comment * document.getElementById("comment").setAttribute( "id" "a24fef60e60887dfb79397d57f6ce4db" effects still felt in several areas According to state utility company PLN Bali the outage was triggered by a failure in the undersea power cable that connects Java and Bali The disruption caused all power plants on the island to shut down simultaneously resulting in a sudden and widespread blackout PLN said the system is still undergoing stabilization and recovery while some areas continue to report partial outages and equipment damage leaving tourists and staff in difficult situations who works at a beachfront restaurant in Peninsula Nusa Dua said operations halted completely due to the working traffic lights caused gridlock Many digital payment systems also went offline leaving tourists unable to pay with credit cards or mobile wallets Residents and visitors alike expressed frustration as the blackout made routine activities nearly impossible and the roads were jammed,” said Reza The blackout affected various aspects of Bali’s tourism infrastructure Tourists struggled to book transport via ride-hailing apps like Grab and Gojek due to the loss of mobile connectivity.  Cultural shows and nighttime attractions were postponed or canceled leaving visitors disappointed and confused PLN officials have yet to confirm when the Java-Bali cable issue will be permanently resolved.  Read this week's magazine the Globe Pequot Publishing Group has acquired Bower House Books an of unfreedom as classic conservatism fades right-wing authoritarianism is gaining momentum threatening to eclipse traditional conservatism with a new “iron curtain” of unfreedom variously analysed as “legal authoritarianism,” a novel form of “fascism,” or even authoritarian libertarianism fundamentally represents what can only be described as a “crazy right.” This movement thrives on the amplification of societal problems to the point of absurdity Nations are portrayed as being on the brink of collapse while “wokism,” often a marginal influence on daily life is inflated into a phantom of left-wing totalitarianism Migration is depicted as an “invasion” by destructive hordes liveable cities are twisted into nightmarish landscapes of purported horror Genuine hardships are layered with countless fabricated terrors fostering an atmosphere of madness within the political life of nations The ideology of post-liberalism exaggerates the complexities of liberal democracy to such an extent that its proponents openly advocate for dictatorship this ideology has gained traction within the United States though their manifestations differ based on varying political cultures and electoral systems Multi-party systems exhibit distinct dynamics compared to first-past-the-post systems which frequently result in de facto two-party arrangements right-wing populist and far-right parties are on the ascent seeking to pull traditional conservative and Christian Democratic parties in their wake Should these conservative parties succumb to this temptation resisting this pull could alienate the more radical and frustrated segments of their support base pushing them towards the “crazy right.” This objectively presents a precarious situation Recent months have seen two European nations respond to these challenges in contrasting ways the far-right FPÖ emerged as the dominant force in parliamentary elections and liberals to form a government faltered the conservative People’s Party initially agreed to join a government led by the extreme right-wing agitator Herbert Kickl and liberals successfully formed a coalition government This tumultuous process appears to have been instructive for the three parties They not only agreed on a joint government programme but also established a shared rhetoric of reasonableness uniting centre-left and centre-right forces operated with a remarkable spirit of “reasonable centrism.” Even the conservative People’s Party which had sharply veered to the right in recent years engaging in a competitive drive with right-wing radicals has seemingly retreated from this dead end Those familiar with Austrian political norms have been pleasantly surprised by this development The “crazy right” consistently elevates the temperature of political discourse through vicious polemics Engaging in a contest with them on these terms is a losing proposition it is crucial to lower the temperature of the debate The three Austrian parties recognise the necessity of successfully implementing this strategy to prevent the “crazy right” from seizing power recently found itself in a situation with striking similarities The now officially far-right extremist AfD emerged as the second strongest party Media discourse exhibited a favourable inclination towards them fixating on issues such as migration and crime realistic government formation options were limited primarily pointing towards a coalition between the conservative Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats While some conservatives may have entertained the notion of an alliance with the right-wing radicals the conservatives and Social Democrats have formed an alliance Have the future government partners genuinely learned their lesson Mere days after the alliance agreement was signed disagreements arose regarding its interpretation The conservatives have nominated several government members who echo the rhetoric of the “crazy right.” Christoph de Vries known for his racial classification of people and for promoting ethno-nationalist positions barely distinguishable from those of the extreme right has been appointed as a form of Deputy State Secretary for the Interior Wolfram Weimer has been selected as Minister of State for Culture and the heterogeneity of contemporary societies he voices fears of the Untergang des Abendlandes (the demise of the Occident) a long-standing right-wing conservative panic that has historically served as a rallying cry for the paranoid and extreme right His socio-political views would position him as a fitting commentator for right-wing Fox News How can the heated and absurd discourse be calmed when it is being fuelled by figures within a centrist government Attempting to render the extreme right superfluous by mimicking its tenets and thereby legitimising them has historically proven ineffective and is unlikely to succeed this time the alliance between Christian Democrats and Social Democrats The Berlin alliance has already pushed through a significant decision even before its formal establishment: one trillion euros are to be allocated for armaments as well as urgently needed infrastructure and climate protection measures through a reform of the strict German fiscal regulations This move is also intended to stimulate the economy as Germany is not only in a persistent recession but is also grappling with a structural crisis within its economic model This context underscores the critical importance of the government pursuing a spirit of unity and refraining from engaging in the bitter culture wars that the extreme right so eagerly promotes there is a tangible risk that German conservatism currently facing a profound crisis of orientation may attempt to combat radicals while simultaneously adopting key elements of the “crazy right.” This approach is destined for failure and would lead to a familiar and detrimental consequence of such coalitions: parties would govern together in an alliance the sole beneficiary of such a scenario would be the “crazy right.” It is hoped that all parties involved are acutely aware of this potential outcome This is a Mail Dallas-based Sunoco LP SUN-N has made a friendly takeover bid for Parkland Corp. PKI-T worth $7.7-billion potentially ending the Calgary-based fuel distributor’s boardroom battle with its largest shareholder Sunoco offered $44 per Parkland share in a combination of its own shares and cash in an early Monday bid to create one of North America’s largest gas station and convenience store operators Analysts said the takeover is likely to succeed resolving a two-year dispute between Parkland and Simpson Oil Ltd. Cayman Islands-based Simpson Oil is attempting to improve Parkland’s financial performance by replacing the majority of its directors and its chief executive officer Simpson Oil said it had won shareholder support for its plan to name nine of 13 directors to Parkland‘s board at an annual meeting scheduled for Tuesday Parkland moved its meeting to June 24 and included a vote on the Sunoco offer the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta denied Simpson Oil’s request to hold the meeting on Tuesday Simpson Oil declined comment on the Sunoco offer Parkland owns more than 4,000 gas stations under the Esso and the On the Run convenience store chain The company also runs a refinery in Burnaby that supplies fuel to the province’s lower mainland Sunoco owns 7,400 gas stations and a 22,500 kilometre pipeline network “This strategic combination is a compelling outcome for Parkland shareholders,” Michael Jennings “The board unanimously recommends the proposed transaction recognizing Sunoco’s commitment to safeguarding Canadian jobs Activist Simpson Oil poised to win Parkland boardroom battle Parkland turned down a takeover bid from Sunoco that valued the company at $45 per share according to analysts and reports in The Globe and Mail Sunoco said buying Parkland will boost its distributable cash flow per unit by 10 per cent and the company expects US$250-million cost savings from combining its businesses within three years of closing the transaction bringing the total value of the transaction to US$9.1-billion “Our initial thought is that competing bids will be few and far between,” analyst Ben Isaacson at Bank of Nova Scotia said in a report on Monday we haven’t seen any other interested parties in Parkland’s unique portfolio of energy infrastructure assets (either separately or combined).” He added: “We think investors will jump at the 25 per cent premium on a stock that has been stuck in the mud on investor fatigue for quite some time.” Parkland and Sunoco structured the takeover with a wrinkle meant to allow the deal to close even if Simpson Oil votes against the transaction The acquisition is structured as a plan of arrangement requiring approval from 66.6 per cent of votes cast by Parkland shareholders Sunoco negotiated the right to switch the offer into a takeover bid which only needs support from 50 per cent of all outstanding Parkland shares The Parkland acquisition will also require approval from the federal government at a time when relations between the U.S and Canada are in a deep freeze owing to President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs Ottawa pledged to heighten reviews of deals deemed predatory owing to any decline in value of the Canadian target that derives from U.S The entrepreneur is former vice-chair for the Trump Victory Committee He also previously served as finance chair of the Republican National Committee Sunoco is offering Parkland shareholders US$3-billion of units in a newly created New York Stock Exchange-listed company called SUNCorp and US$2.6-billion of cash Parkland agreed to pay a $275-million break fee to Sunoco if the deal fails to close “Given the appropriate return compensation $275mm perspective Industry Decoded features industry experts who can enrich your understanding of issues affecting the industry as a whole The views expressed in this column are solely those of the author establishing it as a data powerhouse in the international marketplace SNPI President Alain Duffoux called the Real Estate Standards Organization (RESO) Data Dictionary 2.0 and Web API 2.0.0 certification a "pivotal achievement" for the 15,000-member SNPI and European real estate "Our adoption of the RESO standards underscores our dedication to technological excellence and our ongoing commitment to enhancing professionalism within the global real estate community."  The SNPI MLS's 120,000 active listings will now be available in a format that is translatable to any language and accessible via a standardized API in any market where SNPI chooses to do business It's a remarkable achievement on its own and a symbol of the broad growth in demand for global real estate data standards Open standards that cross borders are everywhere — Wi-Fi PDF and USB are just a few examples — and they provide a transparent set of rules increasing the trust and efficiency of transactions Real estate professionals need the same efficiency RESO's standards make this possible for real estate technology everywhere The Data Dictionary defines common data field names and types the Web API provides a consistent way for data collaborators to request and respond to data transport needs and unique identifiers enable users to objectively classify organizations Building technology that serves organizations across multiple countries requires understanding cross-border commerce Technology companies aggregate property records with different local Standards are the universal language that allow these disparate practices of property transactions to be aligned across borders With RESO's original membership base built up over many years in the U.S., MLS coverage is significant: 93% of the approximately 500 MLSs in the U.S. are already certified on RESO standards These MLSs have brokers who work with international customers buying property domestically and domestic customers buying property internationally As those global connections have strengthened demand for these standards has driven RESO's membership to expand to organizations in more than 30 countries across six continents and the opportunities to grow the resources of RESO's member base and increase cross-border commerce is clear Canada: Working with the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) RESO is helping MLSs and technology organizations across Canada move from the traditional National Data Standard (NDS) to RESO's global standards that help them scale data relationships into new markets the European Association of Real Estate Professions (CEPI) represents more than 30 national and regional trade associations and CEPI members are working with RESO members to implement new MLS systems according to the unique needs of each market Latin America: RESO members are adapting MLS and brokerage systems to support the local idiosyncrasies and language differences across Latin America While North American markets often have a top-down style of MLS systems for listings and Association Management Systems (AMS) for roster data many Latin American countries have a bottom-up approach that sources data through broker and agent CRMs RESO standards empower the data sets to be aggregated and distributed efficiently to all stakeholders in local real estate transactions Asia: While some MLSs in Asia are being built and funded privately others are driven entirely through government initiatives which represents 2.5 million professionals across 40+ associations is partnering with RESO as joint members to help develop an MLS system for its vast membership RESO's global efforts — which are already profitable — benefit its traditional members in financial and functional ways While the majority of RESO's resources are still spent on the MLSs in the U.S. for every $1 RESO spends on international initiatives it brings in $10 in international revenue from membership And member organizations are reaping the benefits of these new global relationships through partnerships in consulting So while there are some organizations in real estate that limit their geographic scope A technical standards body succeeds at an accelerated rate through network effects which is why RESO's board of directors made global growth a top priority for the organization in 2024 And the timing couldn't have been better MLS efforts across the world have been accelerating as more countries are seeing that data standards can be the foundation for the trusted marketplaces that their communities need The long-term commitment of RESO member organizations is key to the continued growth of the value of real estate standards As more capabilities continue to be built out for supporting different languages unique local features and legal requirements experts from different regions of the world are needed to serve as subject matter experts at RESO And international members continue to find ways to improve parts of the standards that already exist today As more global markets demand the access to innovation and trusted information that standards provide Sam DeBord is CEO of the Real Estate territory Restaurants Canada expects annual commercial foodservice sales to contract between 0.4% and 1.5% in 2025 and between 0.6% and 1.4% in 2026 depending on how the tariff dispute with the U.S the forecast for the foodservice industry was a 0.8% growth rate for 2025 and 1% growth in 2026.Commercial foodservice sales are expected to reach between $98 billion and $99 billion in 2025 down from the pre-trade war forecast of $100 billion. If the trade war lasts a year or longer 71% of restaurant chains say they would eliminate non-essential spending and 50% would delay renovations or capital investments actions which will have a significant negative spinoff effect on the economy. The GST/HST holiday provided a strong boost to the industry: based on data from Statistics Canada commercial foodservice sales rose by a robust 7.5% in January the highest real growth since April 2023.In the first two months of 2025 there were 121 restaurant (and accommodation) bankruptcies in Canada compared to 239 in the first two months of 2024 While this is higher than pre-pandemic levels it represents a 50% year-over-year decline.Employment in the restaurant industry rose to 1,180,000 jobs in February the highest level since the start of the pandemic employment in the restaurant industry grew by 5.6% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the first quarter of 2024 despite that being historically the slowest time of the year for the industry.Historically low consumer confidence rising unemployment and stagnant population growth as a result of Canada’s shifting immigration policies are all factors that will hinder foodservice sales in the coming years Restaurants Canada calls on new federal government to permanently eliminate GST/HST on food “We now have definite proof that the GST/HST holiday boosted sales and created jobs in the foodservice sector while preventing bankruptcies,” said Kelly Higginson “The new federal government can protect Canadian jobs and businesses in every community across the country and help Canadians with affordability by removing sales tax from all food permanently Taxing a necessity like food is simply a bad approach to taxation.” In addition to making all food and alcohol sold at restaurants tax-free Restaurants Canada advises the new federal government to strengthen the sector by reducing interprovincial trade barriers and exempting food on certain factors that are inherently uncertain Uncertainties include: (i) the adequacy of infrastructure; (ii) geological characteristics; (iii) metallurgical characteristics of the mineralization; (iv) the ability to develop adequate processing capacity; (v) the price of gold including permitting and environmental assessments; (xv) the ability to raise sufficient capital to develop such inherently uncertain and involves subjective judgments about many relevant factors Mineral resources that are not mineral reserves do not have demonstrated economic viability The accuracy of any such estimates is a function of the quantity and quality of available data and of the assumptions made and judgments used in engineering and geological interpretation (including estimated future production from the Project the anticipated tonnages and grades that will be mined and the estimated level of recovery that will be realized) which may prove to be unreliable and depend upon the analysis of drilling results and statistical inferences that may ultimately prove to be inaccurate Mineral resource estimates may have to be re-estimated based on: (i) fluctuations in commodities prices; (ii) results of drilling (iii) metallurgical testing and other studies; (iv) proposed mining operations including dilution; (v) the evaluation of mine plans subsequent to the date of any estimates; and (vi) the possible failure to receive required permits approvals and licenses or changes to existing mining licenses The forward-looking statements contained in this press release are made as of the release that commonly used in the gold mining industry that are not defined under International Financial Reporting Standards ("IFRS") or United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles ("US GAAP") This includes: all-in sustaining costs per ounce and cash cost per ounce Non-IFRS/Non-GAAP financial performance measures do not have any standardized meaning prescribed under IFRS or US GAAP they may not be comparable to similar measures employed by other companies The data presented is intended to provide additional information and should not be considered in isolation or as a substitute for measures prepared in accordance with IFRS or US GAAP and should be read in conjunction with the Company's financial statements Because the Company has provided these measures on a forward-looking basis it is unable to present a quantitative reconciliation to the most directly comparable financial measure calculated and presented in accordance with IFRS or US GAAP without unreasonable efforts This is due to the inherent difficulty of forecasting the timing or amount of various reconciling items that would impact the most directly comparable forward-looking IFRS or US GAAP measure that have not yet occurred are outside of the Company's control and/or cannot be reasonably predicted "All-in sustaining costs" is a non-IFRS or US GAAP financial measure calculated based on guidance published by the World Gold Council ("WGC") The WGC is a market development organization for the gold industry and is an association whose membership comprises leading gold mining companies Although the WGC is not a mining industry regulatory organization it worked closely with its member companies to develop these metrics Adoption of the all-in sustaining cost metric is voluntary and not necessarily standard this measure presented by the Company may not be comparable to similar measures presented by other issuers The Company believes that the all-in sustaining cost measure complements existing measures and ratios reported by the Company All-in sustaining cost includes both operating and capital costs required to sustain gold production on an ongoing basis Sustaining operating costs represent expenditures expected to be incurred at the Project that are considered necessary to maintain production Sustaining capital represents expected capital expenditures comprising mine development costs and ongoing replacement of mine equipment and other capital facilities and does not include expected capital expenditures for major growth projects or enhancement capital for significant infrastructure improvements "Cash cost per gold ounce" is a common financial performance measure in the gold mining industry but has no standard meaning under IFRS or US GAAP in addition to conventional measures prepared in accordance with IFRS or US GAAP certain investors use this information to evaluate the Company's performance and ability to generate cash flow Cash cost figures are calculated in accordance with a standard developed by The Gold Institute The Gold Institute ceased operations in 2002 but the standard is considered the accepted standard of reporting cash cost of production in North America and the cost measures presented may not be comparable to other similarly titled measures of other companies _________________1 The PEA economic analysis was developed using he worked with he has collected a list of seven habits to grasp: There is no recipe for system transformation are ingredients you can use in accordance with the particularities of the system you are working with and your position in it Don’t wait until you are certain of the right way or right place to start familiar and comfortable position toward one where you sense an opportunity while engaging energetically and attentively with others – particularly people with whom you don’t usually engage Harvey Schachter is a Kingston-based writer specializing in management issues are the authors of When Harvey Didn’t Meet Sheelagh: Emails on Leadership Ont.-based writer specializing in management issues He writes the Managing column on Saturdays and an online column Isn’t it a bit early for the phenomenon of blown leads in the late innings to feel familiar On Sunday, the Red Sox carried a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning but coughed it up, allowing four runs in the seventh and eighth on the way to a 5-4 defeat at the hands of the struggling Twins It marked the third time in five games that the Sox led through six innings and then lost “Tough week for the bullpen,” said a frowning manager Alex Cora Wobbly processions in the relay from starter to closer can turn good teams into mediocre ones Through the first five-plus weeks of the season that appears to be what’s happening with the Red Sox The Sox have been one of the best teams in baseball through the first six innings Sunday marked the 19th time in 36 games they led after six — tied for fourth most in the big leagues Yet the Sox have been tugged down to 18-18 mediocrity in no small part because they have joined the Diamondbacks as the only teams in baseball that have lost four games this year when leading after six innings The rotation has handled a sizable workload (an MLB-high 199 innings with an average of 5.5 per game that ranks fourth) and positioned the Sox to win or kept them in the game The problem hasn’t been at the end of games The Sox are 14-0 when leading after eight innings with Aroldis Chapman delivering dominance (38 percent strikeout rate 1.59 ERA) as the primary line of last defense But the Sox have been unable to pass the baton cleanly in between the first and last pitchers of the game They have coughed up leads in 31 percent of potential save or hold situations the Padres have blown just one lead in 41 save or hold situations The Sox’ recent woes have been particularly puzzling given that two of their top setup options — Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten — have quickly gotten to two strikes against hitters but have then proven incapable of putting them away On Thursday in Toronto Slaten gave up three straight two-strike hits most notably allowing Vladimir Guerrero Jr to work back from an 0-2 count to hit a full-count curveball for a home run On Sunday two-run rally in the seventh inning when Whitlock walked Harrison Bader leading off after getting ahead of him Slaten gave up back-to-back run-scoring hits in two-strike counts The bullpen has been profoundly bad in high-leverage two-strike counts in the seventh and eighth innings It’s been a small but costly sample — in 15 plate appearances that fit the designation opposing hitters have a .385/.467/.692 line when the bullpen derailed shortly after the All-Star break when opposing hitters sat on breaking pitches pitchers have simply been failing to execute to their intended locations producing noncompetitive misses that batters can ignore or hittable pitches that get smoked “We have to execute,” Cora emphasized prior to Sunday’s game When it’s a breaking ball with two strikes Obviously they don’t want to do it — they don’t want to hang a breaking ball Cora again was lamenting his team’s inability to do just that Bullpens almost invariably endure a cluster of meltdowns Slaten and Whitlock have flashed electric stuff with Slaten’s fastball and Whitlock’s slider looking overpowering at times Cora seems convinced both will remain late-innings fixtures alongside Chapman If they continue to falter, perhaps the Sox will recall Luis Guerrero from Triple A or eventually give opportunities to some of their depth starters (Hunter Dobbins one whose inability to reliably convert leads over the past week contributed to their inability to get on a run against sub-.500 teams If the Sox are to fulfill their ambitions to emerge as a legitimate contender for the AL East title they’ll need to identify a reliable late-innings formula Alex Speier can be reached at The annual celebration highlights the athletic and academic accomplishments of Wake Forest student-athletes Boston city Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson pleaded guilty Monday to federal wire fraud and theft charges for taking a $7,000 kickback inside a City Hall bathroom from a relative who worked on her staff The 46-year-old Democrat who made history in 2021 as the first Muslim elected to the council appeared emotional during the hearing in US District Court Boston and said afterward You have to accept the journey even when it hurts I am looking forward to some healing from this and personal growth.” US District Judge Indira Talwani scheduled sentencing for July 29 As part of a plea deal Fernandes Anderson signed in April prosecutors will recommend she serve a year and a day in prison and pay $13,000 in restitution The agreement doesn’t specify what sentence the defense will recommend who had said last month that she will resign said Monday she has yet to set a date but expects it will be sometime in June She said she has been focused on creating a guide that will ease the transition for her constituents in District 7 the most historically diverse neighborhoods in Boston “When I knew or decided that I needed to agree to a plea I have been planning to make sure that my staff was OK so that there’s a softer landing,” Fernandes Anderson told reporters outside the courthouse Fernandes Anderson was arrested by the FBI at her home in Dorchester in December on federal wire fraud and theft charges She announced in April that she had reached a deal with the government and would be pleading guilty to some of the charges she pleaded guilty to two counts for allegedly arranging to receive a kickback from a City Council staff member: one count of wire fraud and one count of theft from a program receiving federal funds Four other wire fraud counts were dropped by prosecutors as part of the deal A federal indictment alleges Fernandes Anderson hired her relative in December 2022 then gave her a $13,000 bonus months later with a caveat: She had to funnel more than half of it back to the councilor Mulcahy said if the case had gone to trial prosecutors were prepared to prove that Fernandes Anderson arranged for the relative to get a bonus “nearly twice as large as total bonuses to other staff combined,” based on their agreement that she would kick $7,000 of it back to the councilor After the city deposited the bonus into the relative’s account she withdrew the money in three increments and arranged to meet Fernandes Anderson At around 4 p.m. on a Friday in June 2023, the pair met in a bathroom at City Hall, where Fernandes Anderson took the $7,000 cash from the staffer and stuffed it in her pocket Fernandes Anderson received a one-word text from her relative saying “Ready,” before meeting to collect the cash “Any disagreement with those facts?” Talwani asked Fernandes Anderson “Are you in fact guilty of counts 1 and counts 6?” Talwani asked “Yes your honor,” Fernandes Anderson said in a soft voice Prosecutors allege Fernandes Anderson arranged the kickback when she was struggling financially and facing bank overdraft fees and a $5,000 fine from the state Ethics Commission for previously hiring relatives to her council staff A statement of facts filed in court in April indicates that as part of the plea agreement Fernandes Anderson also admitted to filing fraudulent federal income tax returns for three years; however she has not been charged with tax offenses the judge interrupted Mulcahy as he began describing the tax allegations noting that Fernandes Anderson was not charged with those crimes She instructed him to focus on the counts she was pleading guilty to A handful of friends and relatives attended the hearing in support of Fernandes Anderson including State Representative Russell Holmes “You have to be there for people when they need you,” said Holmes who described Fernandes Anderson as a kind-hearted person and a friend who was going through a difficult time the council does not have the power to remove a sitting councilor unless they have been sentenced for a felony conviction Fernandes Anderson will continue to receive her $120,000 salary until she is sentenced unless she formally vacates her seat earlier Fernandes Anderson has said her constituents did not want her to resign before May 8 which could require the city to hold a special election for her successor her seat will remain vacant until after the November general election Speaking to reporters about Fernandes Anderson at an unrelated event Monday She said her administration is committed to ensuring that District 7 residents receive answers to any questions they have and access to services they may need council President Ruthzee Louijeune said “The residents of District 7 deserve principled and trustworthy representation and I am deeply disappointed that this standard was not met.” She added she’s committed to making sure that District 7 “is represented with competence and care both during this period and upon Councilor Fernandes Anderson’s resignation.” In the State Treasury is a (TSX-Venture: SAGA)(OTCQB: SAGMF) are taking off on positive drill results from its 2025 maiden drill program at the Radar Ti-V-Fe Project located near the port of Cartwright in Labrador Early drilling results from the winter exploration program have revealed promising mineralization confirming the presence of a valuable iron-titanium-vanadium mineral called vanadiferous titanomagnetite Lab tests from the first two drill holes show strong concentrations of these metals including one section with 31.5 meters containing nearly 26% iron and another with 50 meters showing similar grades high-grade sections contained over 40% iron and up to 0.5% vanadium These mineral-rich zones averaged 20–40% titanomagnetite confirmed previous geophysical surveys and has so far explored only a small fraction—about 1/40th—of the potential 20-kilometer strike zone within the Dykes River intrusion "We are very encouraged by these initial drilling results," commented Michael Garagan "They validate our geological models and significantly expand our expectations for the entire Radar property The Hawkeye Zone is just one of five primary targets currently identified; excitingly this zone remains one of the smallest prospects Our strategy moving forward will involve methodically advancing exploration and drilling at our highest-priority targets The door is now open to roll out a standardized order of operations We know these layers are anomalous based upon surface geochemistry Exploration moving forward is ‘magnetic survey - drill – repeat’ as we begin to survey the entirety of the oxide layering zone and prepare to identify the most prospective targets for the next drill program.” Republication or redistribution of AllPennyStocks.com's content is expressly prohibited without the prior written consent of AllPennyStocks.com AllPennyStocks.com shall not be liable for any errors or delays in the content or for any actions taken in reliance thereon View more of this article on AllPennyStocks.com AllPennyStocks.com is one of North America’s leading platforms for micro-cap insights we provide a wealth of resources and expert content designed for everyone—from beginner investors to seasoned traders AllPennyStocks.com is rapidly gaining recognition as a leading authority in the micro-cap space with our insightful content prominently featured across numerous top-tier financial platforms reaching a broad audience of investors and industry professionals Want to showcase your company's story to a powerful network of investors We can help you elevate your message and make a lasting impact Email: ads@allpennystocks.com Shares of SAGA Metals Corp.
