One of the newest cannabis retailers in the region is throwing a “4/20” celebration at its store in Woodbury Heights on Thursday and again on Friday at its new Gloucester City store
Reference to “4/20” or “420” or “4:20” is slang for using marijuana or hashish
It can also describe any related celebrations taking place every April 20
BluLight Cannabis is calling its celebrations the “420 Throwdown,” and it plans to make the festivities an annual thing

Lillo’s Tomato Pies of Hainesport NJ has announced a second location which is coming to Gloucester City NJ
If you’re unfamiliar with Lillo’s in just a few short years they have jumped near the top of every conversation of best pizzas and cheesesteaks in the entire Delaware Valley
With their upcoming Gloucester City location they will be “upping the ante” further
I stopped in yesterday at their Hainesport location to try a slice of pie and one of their massive cheesesteaks… I need to experience things so I know how to tell you guys about it
Lillo’s is heading to Camden County taking over the former Thomas Murphy’s Pub on Burlington St
The corner pub property is actually a large facility with two floors of dining (and bars)
a second floor outdoor deck… And from my many visits I remembered it as having a really beautiful Irish pub interior
Thomas Murphy’s took over the space in 2018 and made it through the pandemic. Their last Facebook post was August 1st 2023 when they said they would be on a short vacation
and it appears they just never reopened again
I stopped over at the Gloucester City building yesterday and solely based on peaking through the windows
it looks like the place just needs a few days of good cleaning and they could open
Well according to the Lillo’s Facebook Page that opening as Lillo’s is to take place in early January..
The property is going to be a perfect match for Lillo’s
their customers and the local Gloucester City community as it brings so many good things together into one building
As mentioned Lillo’s had already established a huge reputation on their own for their menu
particularly thin crust “Trenton-style” pizza and amazing cheesesteaks
Things really exploded when Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports stopped in (Nov 2022) and tried both their thin crust Trenton-Style pizza and cheesesteaks
Dave is the founder of Barstool Sports website who later expanded into his One Bite Pizza Review videos. Those videos are available on all the social media channels but as one example of their popularity his YouTube channel has 1.4 million followers
A positive review from Dave can completely “blow up” a business with thousands of people coming from many miles away to try what Dave says is the best
Two years ago Dave was driving through the Mount Laurel/Hainesport area and they passed by Lillo’s not even knowing that it was already a top rated pizza restaurant
he and his crew turned the car around and stopped back in to try the pie
Now if you’re unfamiliar with his rating scale
anything over 9 is completely rare and signifies an “off the charts” pizza establishment. Most places fall between 5 and 8
so any score over 8 qualifies that shop as one of the top echelon of pizza makers
Lillo’s Tomato Pie was given an 8.4 score for it’s crispy thin crust ”no flop” pizza
Dave also seemed to really enjoy chatting with the owners and hearing their story
which starts with Papa’s Famous Trenton Tomato Pies where the Lillo’s team learned the pizza making craft
Portnoy was told about the Lillo’s Cheesesteaks being award winners
so Dave then dove in for a cheesesteak and pushed that score up to 9.1… putting Lillo’s in a level of his favorite cheesesteak
The Youtube version of that review video has been watched 735,000 times
and I’ve also seen it on Facebook and TikTok
For my lunchtime visit yesterday at Hainesport I walked into a very crowded small restaurant
I naively thought I’d be able to chat with the owners or manager during my visit
but honestly things were just busting at the seams inside
In my brief conversation with one of the counter persons they told me “oh this is actually a little quiet right now
Well I can’t imagine what that experience is like
First I tried a slice of pizza and it was absolutely delicious with a true crispy “no-flop” crust
It’s definitely something that I have not had in the counties of Gloucester and Camden and should put the new Lillo’s Gloucester City in everyone’s radar
But my focus that day was their cheesesteaks
People ask me all the time for reviews of food which… I try to stay with the “experience” aspect of things
simply letting people know something interesting is available
Partly I don’t know how qualified I am but honestly so many places just seem the same to me
When asked “who has the best fast food chicken”… I dont know what to say when to me
breaded chicken breast seems to be the same at all the spots
But for the Lillo’s cheesesteaks I can absolutely say that it is different. Deliciously different
Just looking at the sandwich and seeing the meat billowing out of the top of it
completely covered in cheese with big chunks of onions… makes you think you’ve stumbled onto something completely new
In the popular Cheesesteak Facebook groups people debate over the meat preparation “slabs of steak versus chopped” but Lillo’s takes a whole different avenue for meat preparation (which I think is somewhat similar to Donkey’s)
At Lillo’s it is a sliced steak but cooked in a way that many of the slices don’t separate
so you end up with chunks of beef. It makes for an extra hearty bite. Absolutely very tender because each chunk is made from individual slices
but it gives an extra texture that you don’t get from a traditional cheese steak
somehow at Lillo’s they found a way to completely melt the cheese throughout the entire sandwich in a way that it’s almost like a sauce
but yet it still has a thicker consistency to it
They aren’t hiding them with little pieces… no what I was served offered larger chunks of onions
It made for a sandwich that was incredibly delicious… and both somewhat familiar yet also incredibly unique
Overall this really is a delicious and unique sandwich. I completely understand why people drive for miles to try… and I can’t wait for when I have a 6 mile drive to their new Gloucester City location

was conducted at the location of the former Debenhams department store in King’s Square
where there had been no previous archaeological investigations
believed to have been buried in two different churches that once occupied the site
Approximately half of the graves were found in 83 brick-lined vaults that belonged to the 18th-century St
deeper graves are believed to have been from the earlier medieval church
which existed before the Norman Conquest of 1066 and was probably destroyed in the mid-1600s after damage during the English Civil War
Cotswold Archaeology’s Acting Principal Manager
“Although the footprint of the medieval church was not identified during the current archaeological works
the identification of a limestone wall with surviving lime plaster most probably represents part of the earlier church.” Sheldon added that these remains
will be preserved and displayed in the new City Campus
Excavations also revealed signs of Roman occupation beneath the layers of subsequent activity
Archaeologists have recovered cobblestones
These features mirrored those discovered during limited archaeological work in the 1950s and 1960s
Senior Project Officer at Cotswold Archaeology
described the finds as “unbelievable.” In addition to physical artifacts and structures
the human remains are also expected to offer a greater understanding of Gloucester’s population over the course of a thousand years
preliminary observations already indicate how diet changes
such as increased sugar consumption in the 16th century
Ongoing scientific analysis of the remains is continuing
with full results expected to be published later
the University of Gloucestershire’s City Campus will not only be a modern hub of education and community engagement but also a living testament to the city’s layered past
with students and visitors able to walk amidst over a thousand years of history

In one month Lillo’s Tomato Pies opens their second South Jersey location
taking over the former Thomas Murphy’s Pub on Burlington Street in Gloucester City.
Yes their new Camden County location will have a full bar as well as their “Dave Portnoy” top-rated Trenton tomato pies
On January 11th Lillo’s posted an update on Social Media that due to delays taking over the liquor license
they have delayed the planned opening and INTERVIEWS scheduled for Sunday Jan 12 at postponed
In fact the neighborhood corner pub location (located just a block off of the Gloucester City waterfront and Freedom Pier) was previously beautifully remodeled and featured two floors of bar and dining spaces.
I haven’t seen yet what has changed for the Lillo’s takeover
but I know they had a good starting foundation
In a social media post yesterday Lillo’s announced the Grand Opening date as Friday February 7th.
At the same time they also announced they’re hiring for all positions including bar staff
kitchen staff and a part-time “media and editing” person
This Sunday January 12th from 1pm-6pm they are conducting on-site interviews at the upcoming Gloucester City location
the Eagles Round 1st playoff game is at 4:30pm so plan accordingly
For Lillo’s it’s been a whirlwind of success since opening their Hainesport Burlington County location just three years ago
where they quickly established a “must try” reputation amongst the locals
Things really took off when national celebrity food reviewer Dave Portnoy stopped in and gave both their tomato pies and cheesesteaks a top rating
This instantly catapulted Lillo’s into the vocabulary of every pizza and cheesesteak lover in South Jersey and really the Philadelphia area
causing customers to travel from significant distances just to try their pizza and cheesesteaks
For my November article I visited them in Hainesport for the very first time and I have to say… There definitely is something special and different about the Lillo’s cheesesteak! It was a slightly chopped steak but they sort-of left the layers of meat together in chunks so it made a little bit more thicker bite which gave a very satisfying bite
Just as important in the Lillo’s cheesesteak is the cheese and onions which are magic we melt it throughout the entire sandwich. It is literally impossible to take a bite of a Lillo’s cheesesteak without getting all of the flavors in every single bite
I also tried a slice of pizza and it was delicious but I really want to judge the pizza with a full pie which will probably wait for their opening next month in Gloucester City
The Lillo’s team really has their stuff together because as part of their announcement not only did they list the opening date and the address
but they’ve already put out their full hours for the bar and kitchen
With the initial opening starting on February 7th
the new Lillo’s Gloucester City will be open 5 days a week (closed Monday and Tuesday) with a lunch and evening set of hours
Lillo’s adds “Hours may adjust as we hear from the community and grow into our new space.”

The Bank Bar in Gloucester City is currently adding an all-season outdoor space
and this week they are celebrating their one-year anniversary
if you’re unfamiliar with the Bank Bar it was previously known as the King Street Pub
and is located in an awesome building that was developed in 1886 originally as a bank… and then for many years was home to a synagogue
The two-story open interior atrium space with rear loft and large original stained glass windows makes a bar and restaurant environment that you really just can’t recreate today
And the new ownership has taken all of the things that work so well with the King Street Pub and have been enhancing it over the last year
remodeling the large center bar as well as adding an outdoor concrete bar area on the side
The second floor loft in the rear of the building is a fairly good size and features a pool table… Which I’m absolutely amazed that ownership was able to lift it up to the loft
My visit yesterday was right around rush hour and it was perfect timing to catch the sun going down
which lit up the one side of the stained glass windows where the original brick wall was recently exposed again… It really is a beautifully impressive space
Looking to fully give their customers a unique dining and beverage experience
the kitchen is completely scratch-made… during my short visit yesterday I tried their boneless chicken wings which are hand-battered in the restaurant kitchen
with a unique and secret preparation that gives the crispy outer coating a deliciously unique crunch
I hope to be back soon to dive more into the menu and share that experience with readers
I have been to the new bank bar several times in the last year and in fact had an amazing time at the Gloucester City Saint Patrick’s Day festival in March.
I had no idea the Ban Bar was extending their outdoor experience into an all season space
until I showed up yesterday to grab a beer and saw the large 20 foot tall steel support structure that was recently installed in the side-yard of the building
I am the “king of good timing” as I showed up just as co-owner Jim was outside showing his mother the new sign that had just arrived
I had a chance to ask him what the plan was for the latest round of improvements
Realizing the popularity of the new outdoor bar and patio area
they are extending the side-yard area into an all-season space
The tall steel structure will support an angled awning that will extend off of the side of the brick building
and will also include removable side walls… so that the outdoor bar and patio space can be used throughout most of the year
It’s a smart design choice for the partners as when the weather turns warmer again those side panels can be removed
and customers can get the benefit of enjoying a full outdoor dining and beveraging experience
As mentioned the steel is already in place and even the wood headers for the other side of the awning have been installed on the buildings brick exterior wall
While they do not have a firm date for the project to be completed there is some hope that it is available before the end of the year
Weather and inspection processes of course factor into the timeline
And as mentioned they are also adding a Bank Bar sign to the property which will be on a free standing pole at the front corner of the building
Jimmy and Dalton plan to unveil the new sign as part of their Anniversary Celebration
As mentioned bar has has been operating as the bank bar for a year… this month
So an interesting fun family twist to the story is during my visit yesterday the prior owner was sitting at the bar…
As I described in my 2015 coverage of the King Street pub
she and her husband also owned Arts Deli in Gloucester City
And the twist is that one of the owners of the Bank Bar is their son Jim
who with friend and partner Dalton purchased the bar
And Jim’s brother Chris is now the owner of Art’s Deli
It’s a smart move for the couple who were looking to retire and can still keep the two popular businesses within the family while helping their two sons start off in their own business ventures… And of course mom and dad get to visit the Deli and bar regularly
But absolutely Jim and Dalton have been adding their own significant touches to the Bank Bar
and this week they will be celebrating the one year anniversary
Saturday they will have the Goodfellas bands for the big weekend celebration and I there will also be a midweek party
as Wednesday is the official one year anniversary
That being said they will be releasing all of those details in the next day or two on Facebook and Instagram
For more on the history of the Bank Bar building, check out my 2015 article on the King Street Pub

Nova Adventure Park Proposed for Former Somerdale Esporta Fitness Space
BluLight Cannabis Dispensary is coming soon to Gloucester City’s former O’Donnell’s restaurant building. This is the second South Jersey location for BluLight who about two weeks ago celebrated the Grand Opening of their Woodbury Heights location
Blulight say they take their name from the fact that during the cultivation process of cannabis
blue light is used to enhance THC levels… And their goal with their cannabis dispensaries is to similarly elevate the cannabis experience… the retail shopping experience
The Woodbury Heights location for BluLight is a former Ocean First Bank branch located on Rt 45 (Mantua Pike)
The location puts them basically next to the Hollywood Café Diner which is located across Elm Ave. (The Hollywood Diner is undergoing a major remodeling right now!)
The modern designed building allows the dispensary to utilize the drive-thru as a pickup service… customers can place their order online first and then stop back later to pick up at the drive-thru window
According to Social Media posts it appears the Woodbury Heights location opened on Halloween Day which included a Grand Opening celebration
This is actually the second bank location that BluLight has targeted for Woodbury Heights
They originally had hoped to take over a former Nova Bank building which sits just 200 feet away from the current dispensary location (somewhat behind Hollywood Café). Unfortunately as they were working through the process to get approvals and open that location, a devastating fire destroyed the building
While I’d imagine that was a stressful and challenging time for the dispensary operators
the final open location for BluLight sitting directly on the busy Route 45 at a traffic light intersection… may actually work out better for them in the long run
A second BluLight Cannabis Dispensary location for South Jersey is planned to open in Gloucester City
with exterior construction appearing to be near the end of the process
That being said I do not know the status of the interior remodel
The location for the new Gloucester City BluLight dispensary is on Broadway
just a block and a half from the Walt Whitman Bridge
in a building that for many decades was known as O’Donnell’s restaurant (and for a short time frame was Timeout II)
I stopped in a few days ago to walk around the building which is sporting a new exterior paint of grey with blue accents (matching their branding)
Additionally the parking lot has been fully repaved
There is a small amount of changes to the parking lot… due to the lower customer counts of a dispensary (compared to a bar/restaurant) they actually removed some of the asphalt to add more landscaped areas
A prominent monument “BluLight” sign is also installed on the property
When opened it appears that BluLight would be the first dispensary located within Gloucester City
and its proximity near the bridge could see it also attracting customers from Fairview and other nearby communities
It would appear that this Gloucester City location does not have a drive-thru service as that was not part of the original restaurant/bar offerings. I’ve visited O’Donnell’s many times including the year when it was Time Out II… and it does not appear that any of the exterior building structure was changed at all
The building had been known as O’Donnell restaurant and tavern for nearly 100 years
A newspaper advertisement I located stated they opened in 1923
During my childhood years in the 1970s I remember my father had two favorite restaurants to eat at
one was My Friend’s on Mount Ephraim Avenue in Camden and the other was O’Donnell’s in Gloucester City
O’Donnell’s was famous (at least in my family) for their Manhattan Clam Chowder which I can still taste in my memories
Even if we weren’t coming in for dinner there would be regularly drives over to the restaurant to pick up quarts of the soup to take home

Papaleo admitted guilt in November to two counts of sexual assault of a child younger than 13 years old
More allegations: New claims against Mount Laurel child-care provider

Elsie’s Burgers and Shakes is an Irish themed sweet shop coming soon to Gloucester City’s King Street Riverfront District
The location for the upcoming Elsie’s is across the street from The Bank Bar
in a small building which many will remember previously as the home of New York Style Pizza
I caught up with Gloucester City resident Richard Dolson who with his family is developing the new Elsie’s restaurant and sweet shop
who tells 42Freeway that the family’s goal is to create a small town
Elsie’s will feature an old-fashioned counter serving delicious smash burgers and crazy good shakes… and the menu will also feature sweets
It’s not an overly large place inside but after a few months of opening Richard expects they will be able to open up the attached garages for open-air outdoor seatings. Elsie’s will also offer takeout and delivery service options
It’s a great location for a small town eatery as there are considerable residential homes in the area
not to mention the students and employees of the PB Cosmetology Education Center
as well as the employees of Holt Logistics
Locals will likely recognize Richard’s name
as he is also an active partner in Gloucester City’s Holy City Publik House on Jersey Ave
for the new Elsie’s Burgers and Shakes coming to King Street
it is purely a Dolson Family business (not connected with Holy City and partners)
Richard tells me the new restaurant is named after his mother-in-law Elsie
who also was a Gloucester City resident and a beloved waitress at several area diners including Gateway and Brooklawn
Construction crews have been working on the King Street building for several weeks and months now
and the opening date is getting close… Richard tells me they hope for an opening date in May
And of course 42Freeway will be back in May for the opening of Elsie’s
to get the preview look and experience of Elsie’s Burgers and Shakes

Now personally I think every school in the Delaware Valley should be off the Monday after the Super Bowl
but I guess learning development will be stunted if Ms
Williams’ second graders don’t learn fractions for a day
So a delay will have to do and this South Jersey school district is leading by example and I hope more follow suit:
Good to see some people in this world still get it
You don’t want a bunch of zombies coming down from a Mountain Dew high and a belly full of buff chick dip slogging their way through language arts
That’s how you end up with a inability to discern “then” and “than” until your 30s like your boy
Ask me if I remember what I learned in 6th grade after the Eagles lost the Super Bowl
Crying my eyes out after Tom Brady beat us because Donovan McNabb might’ve had one or two more pops than (nailed it) he should’ve at a Jacksonville Chili’s
if the Eagles win the Super Bowl I want school cancelled for the parade
I’ll have memories of skipping high school for the Phillies parade the rest of my life
You don’t have a lot of opportunities to enjoy a parade
The teachers don’t want to be there just as much as the students
wheel that big TV in (it’s probably just on smartboards now) and throw the parade on for the kids

A message left for the department was not returned
and Deptford police have not issued any statement
the township's Mayor Paul Medany said he had been unaware of the incident
Gloucester City police ended up capturing the stolen car driver
Chrismon of the 6100 block of Stark Way in Mount Laurel
Chrismon was charged and then given to Deptford police
including four each of reckless endangerment and assault by auto
“None of the (bystander) parties involved had any connection to Gloucester,” Morrell said
“They happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time

Morrell said police pursuing someone are required to radio ahead to police in another jurisdiction if they think they may enter that community
A dispatcher-to-dispatcher call would have been the option in this case
his department only learned Deptford officers were involved in a chase after the cruiser and stolen car were well inside the city
The crash happened about a block off Broadway
and the chase probably had gone through Westville and Brooklawn
they respond out to the location that the (city) dispatcher gives them and there’s no one there,” Morrell said
Morrell said a resident has provided a Ring camera video that offered some detail of the scene
One question is whether the Deptford officer had lost contact with the stolen car or was lagging far behind but with visual contact
because of the angle of the camera,” Morrell said
An arrest complaint affidavit states both vehicles were disabled by the impact
Two children and at least one adult needed hospital treatment but afterward were discharged
Morrell said all police pursuits must go through an internal review and must be forwarded to a county prosecutor if anything appears improper
the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office would be notified
“It sounds like it’s going to be scrutinized.”
The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office is aware of the chase and outcome
Chief of Detectives Tom Gilbert said Wednesday that the incident is under internal review at the Deptford Police Department
A spokesman from The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office said on Wednesday that police have chase policies to follow but the office had no comment on this case

Two South Jersey men cannot sue their municipalities over the presence of “forever chemicals” in their drinking water
The residents — Mark Cerkez of Gloucester City and Charles Hoffman of Brooklawn — filed separate lawsuits alleging their local governments breached contracts with them by providing water with unacceptable levels of toxic chemicals used in industrial processes
The proposed class action suits sought to represent all residents served by the municipal systems
which drew the contaminated water from wells
They demanded financial damages for residents' expenses for bottled water and home filtration systems
The suits also asked for court orders barring the use of contaminated wells
But the appellate decision ruled the men could not claim they had an “implied contract,” or seller-consumer relationship
PFAS in water supply: 'Forever chemicals' prompt lawsuit by Burlington County township
It found “running water is not a commercial product but rather a public resource held in trust for residents."
And it said the town’s water systems were a government service that can’t be compared “to private companies that sell water for profit.”
Charging a fee for a government service “does not automatically create an implied contract between municipalities and residents,” the ruling continued
The decision came after two lower court rulings split on the issue in October 2023.
A Superior Court judge dismissed Cerkez’ suit
awarding summary judgment to Gloucester City
But another judge declined to dismiss Hoffman’s suit
The appeals were combined for consideration by a three-judge panel
Its July 19 ruling upheld the decision in favor of Gloucester City
The decision noted Gloucester City in 2021 received a notice of non-compliance over the level of a forever chemical
so-named because they degrade only slowly over time
have long been used to make water-repellent clothing
"Residents were advised that drinking water with PFNA levels that exceeded the MCL [maximum contamination level] for ‘many years’ could result in liver
and other health problems,” the appellate ruling said
The city's notice said residents did not need to take corrective action but warned those with "’severely compromised immune system[s]’ or those with an infant
could be at an increased risk and should seek medical advice …”
Gloucester City "was given one year to lower the PFNA in the water it distributes to residents.”
alleging Gloucester City “continued to sell the contaminated water after learning it was tainted.”
Brooklawn was notified in December 2022 that PFNA in its water exceeded the maximum level
which has received $1 million in federal funds to build a water-treatment facility
responded by blending contaminated water with clean water
Both of the suits alleged the towns continued to sell contaminated water
“violating the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing.”
But the appellate court saw it differently
declaring “there is no foundation upon which contractual damages may be claimed against these municipalities.”

We feel that it’s important to give students and staff the opportunity to enjoy the game with their families and still attend school & work the next day safely and well-rested," the district posted on their Facebook page
Comments on the post both favored the decision and said the district was coddling students
Gloucester City did the same thing in 2023 for the Eagles last appearance in the Super Bowl which they lost to Kansas City 38-35
When the Eagles won their first and championship in 2018 schools in Collingswood
and Paul VI High School in Haddonfield all gave students to attend the team's victory parade on a Thursday afternoon
the superintendent of Hamilton public schools in Mercer County and a Giants fan said parade day was a regular day
Going to the parade would not be an acceptable excuse for being out

CAMDEN — A man convicted of raping and killing a Gloucester City toddler has been sentenced to life in prison without parole — plus an additional 40 years
showed no emotion as he heard the penalty for the murder of 23-month-old Ariana Smyth in July 2016
Prior to his sentencing he shook his head in disagreement as the child’s mother
Flickering candles at dusk: At 2016 vigil, grief for slain Gloucester City toddler
and I stand on the same right thing now,” he told Superior Court Judge Edward McBride Jr
A representative of DiSporto’s family also asserted his innocence
“We believe a gross injustice is happening,” said the defendant’s aunt
who prefaced her remarks by expressing sympathy for Smythe’s mother and family
who wept before even beginning her remarks
described the loss of her daughter as “the emptiness that consumes me every day."“Our family is forever shattered,” she said
has been in custody since shortly after Airana’s death
sexually assaulted and battered the child in the child's home on July 3
The couple made two trips to the Deptford Mall that day
dressing the girl in a hat on a summer day to conceal her injuries
Bobo did not call emergency personnel until around 6 p.m.
The toddler died from head injuries two days later
Bobo was charged with child endangerment and
aggravated sexual assault and other charges in October of 2023 after a 2019 trial ended with a hung jury
McBride noted that state law mandated life without parole for DiSporto
consecutive sentence of 40 years for sex crimes against the toddler
said he will appeal the conviction and sentence

school districts that could lose millions in COVID relief funds under TrumpGov
Phil Murphy said New Jersey school districts will lose a total of $85 million under a revised deadline announced last week
Gloucester City School Superintendent Sean Gorman was stunned to learn this week that President Donald Trump’s administration was putting a stop payment on $1.4 million in COVID relief funds to his district
Phil Murphy notified 20 districts Monday about the federal funding cuts
totaling $85 million and described them in a news release as an attempt to “claw back” funding for critical infrastructure projects
“These cuts are reckless and irresponsible
allowing us very little time for contingency plans,” Murphy
“At a time of unprecedented chaos and uncertainty at the federal level
Washington is failing the next generation.”
Some school districts had received extensions to spend that money
The abrupt notice sent states and districts scrambling to figure out next steps
The funds were approved in 2021 under the American Rescue Plan
Gorman said his district planned to seek $1.4 million in reimbursements from the federal government for three projects
This money was promised to us,” Gorman said
Murphy was one of several governors across the country to sound the alarm about the lost funding
A spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Education said officials are “considering all options to ensure that all funds promised to Pennsylvania are reimbursed appropriately.”
Here’s what to know about the funding that New Jersey officials say is in jeopardy:
Murphy said 20 districts are facing federal funding cuts
and Penns-Grove-Carneys Point in South Jersey
The federal government awarded about $200 billion in COVID relief funds in 2020-2021 to help schools with the impact of the pandemic
when schools were closed and students were learning remotely
The funds could be used to assist students with learning loss
Some states requested extensions to allow schools 14 additional months
New Jersey obtained approval for one-time extensions for districts in certain circumstances
a spokesperson for the state Department of Education
Fredrick said districts were given more time to seek reimbursements for capital projects such as window replacements or HVAC upgrades that were delayed by supply chain delays or issues beyond their control
The amounts ranged from less than $100,000 to $17 million
McMahon said more time “was not justified” and that states and school districts “had had ample time to liquidate obligations.”
“Extending deadlines for COVID-related grants
years after the COVID pandemic ended is not consistent with the Department’s priorities and thus not a worthwhile exercise of its discretion,” she wrote
McMahon said the department would consider extensions “on an individual project-specific basis.”
Gorman and Delran Superintendent Lisa Della Vecchia both said they plan to ask the U.S
in a letter to the Delran school community
said the district had been expecting more than $717,000 in reimbursements for HVAC upgrades at its high school and middle schools
crews are still working on playground improvements at Cold Springs Elementary
a renovated life skills classroom and flooring in a media center
“It would be a major setback and pushback of other projects,” Gorman said Thursday
Both districts said capital reserve funds would be used to cover the costs if they are unable to get federal reimbursement
There are no plans to raise taxes or cut staff

“Lane’s pieces were originally hung in storefronts,” said the city’s arts, culture, and events coordinator Kate Shamon Rushford over the phone from her home in Wellesley. The artist painted “Three Master on the Gloucester Railways” in 1857
as a sign for John Trask’s paint shop at Burnham Brothers’s marine railway
“It’s a wonderful resource for the city that will connect with Gloucester residents and the larger public,” said Shamon Rushford
“It’s also a way for the city to manage and understand the complete inventory.”
Gloucester’s archive is not the first city collection online. The Artwork Archive website hosts 10 public portfolios, including Salem’s
The initiative came together over several months
spearheaded by Mayor Greg Verga’s administration and the city’s Committee for the Arts
photographed more than 300 individual works for the gallery
“Anna located storage areas in City Hall that had additional pieces,” Shamon Rushford said
the artworks there had to be re-homed or stored
Such luminous pieces could be signatures of the online archive
“brings to light the robust collection the city has.”

NEWARK – The Gloucester City High School softball team gave its fan base plenty to cheer about this season
And the Lions provided their beloved community the biggest prize in scholastic sports

Gloucester captured the state Group 2 title with a thrilling 3-2 win over Ramsey at Mike Sheppard Sr
“We play for each other and we play for the town,” Gloucester head coach Megan Mason said

Gloucester’s fans whooped it up after the final out
cheering the team from the stands during the trophy presentation and the party was sure to continue when the Lions returned to Holy City later that night
It was a jubilant finish to what was a trying year in the Gloucester family
The school mourned the death of 2023 grad and baseball player Gage Myers
The baseball team dedicated the season to Myers and won the program’s first sectional title in a half century
The softball team lost one of its biggest fans too
“You see all the old guys who come out here to cheer us on
One of them passed away right before the season started,” Mason said
Gloucester earned the program’s fifth state title in its history
including a pair of one-run victories in the sectional and state finals
“This is so unreal,” senior pitcher Olivia George said
“We flipped the switch halfway through the season and just kept it going from there.”
Much like her four-hit shutout against Haddon Heights in the South Jersey championship
George kept a good-hitting Ramsey squad frustrated at the plate
The Rams (26-4) were held to four hits and two runs for just the third time this season
Gloucester’s defense produced plenty of gems in the biggest game
none bigger than third baseman Ava Rodgers

Gloucester’s sparkplug Bailey Schoenfeldt continued to ignite the offense
including a pair of hits and scored a run as the Lions took a 2-0 lead in the third
RBI single by Kaelyn Zearfoss in the fifth inning proved to be the decisive hit as Gloucester extended its lead to 3-1
Ramsey (26-4) cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth and had runners in the corner
but George got the final hitter of the frame to fly out to Zearfoss in right
Ramsey had the tying run on second base when George again ended the threat and clinched the title
“Just another inning,” George said when asked what was going through her mind as she entered the circle in the seventh

Being recognized as a dive bar is by no means a negative connotation here
it's a place where you feel comfortable
a place that doesn't have to spend big bucks to put a smile on your face
and is generally more a down-to-earth crowd

One Southern New Jersey 'dive' bar made the list
