Gloversville is gearing up to complete a number of state-funded projects to revitalize its downtown
But a fire last week damaged a number of buildings and destroyed an historic factory
The Fulton County city was awarded $10 million in state Downtown Revitalization Initiative funds in 2021
and in the coming months a number of the projects funded through the grant will be coming to completion
For lifelong city resident and Mayor Vincent DeSantis
seeing new life brought to downtown has been a long time coming
“It has always been my thought that Gloversville had all of the right bones and all of the right historic ambiance to really revitalize itself in a new age
it’s really gratifying to see the results of that begin to come to fruition
it has to continue because redevelopment of a city
it can only get better and better,” said DeSantis
The city has been able to leverage the initial state money into $35 million in investments into the city
75 new units of housing are going up across the street from city hall
The city says an initial $1.2 million in DRI funds has turned into $22 million in investments in the complex
City grant manager Nick Sabawsky says projects like the Glove City Lofts have brought new private businesses to the city
“I mean the key to downtown is to bring people back to downtown and once we start bringing them in — it’s all inter-dependent
You’ve got the eateries that are dependent on the people
and the people that are dependent on the eateries
it’s the same with any kind of retail you’ve got to have people to support it,” said Sabawsky
this is geared toward artists and artists’ residences,” said DeSantis
A $4 million renovation to the Glove Theatre and new artists residency spaces throughout the city are part of DeSantis’ DRI-driven vision for Gloversville to be a haven for a new generation of artists
their meetings have been really well attended
I think the last meeting they had 27 artists there of all kinds – musicians
And this building is kind of geared toward residences for artists
Another project that’s at the center of DeSantis’ vision for the city is just up the block
Thomas Square was a barren plane of asphalt behind an abandoned church
and a soon-to-be-completed building that will host vendors to sell food and drinks
and even rent out skates for a winter rink
who has been working in the city for four decades and is not seeking reelection in November
the city’s DRI projects are a culmination of his dedication to Gloversville
“The community envisioned what they wanted to see in the downtown
it’s almost like there was a pent-up enthusiasm
we knew exactly what we wanted and we hit the ground running,” said DeSantis
a fire ripped through three buildings on South Main Street including the historic Fownes glove factory
DeSantis estimates the demolition and repair of the land will cost nearly $500,000
which the city will seek state funds to help cover
Darrin Palmateer was renting the building next door to the factory for his pet store Adirondack Exotics
It was completely destroyed in the fire along with hundreds of animals inside
He was left frustrated by what he saw as years of inaction by the city
“Why was the building allowed to be sold in the first place
unless somebody was going to come in and start to do something right away
why didn’t the city do what they’re doing now
that building has been doing nothing for 30 years
The city is always worried about downtown Gloversville
Downtown Gloversville I guess starts two blocks that way

A massive fire has impacted a handful of buildings in downtown Gloversville
The former Fownes glove factory on South Main Street in the Fulton County City caught fire Tuesday around 7 p.m
Another residential building on adjacent Burr Street was hit by an ember
First responders were unable to stop the fire in that building
though they were able to prevent any irreparable damage to any other buildings
the remains of the four-story factory were still smoldering as firefighters sprayed water from a neighboring parking lot and a demolition crew began knocking down one of the brick walls
Wayne O’Brien has lived in the city for a couple years
His apartment is just up the street from the burning remains
He says he could feel the heat sitting on his porch
I don’t have my phone right now but I got a video from when it first happened
the power lines were just like—it was going crazy
They said I think the dumpster at the mechanic was on fire,” said O’Brien
City Fire Chief Tom Groff says by the end of the day
“These buildings are expensive to clean up
City just doesn’t have the fund to pursue it
We’ll pursue the owners and try to hold them responsible but for now we’ve just got to get it down so it’s not a hazard to the public
And then we’ll do everything we can to make someone responsible in order to get the buildings cleaned up
If the owners have insurance they should pony up and take care of their properties,” said Groff
Groff says this is the third major mill fire within the city in the past 12 months
I was a hobbyist before I opened the store
Nobody opens up an exotic pet store out of nowhere
basically it’s like—I watched the past 12 years of my life burn up last night,” said Palmateer
He says hundreds of animals were lost in the fire
I actually only live—I own a house that’s like four blocks away
My mom said ‘hey there’s a crazy fire,’ and I walked outside to look at the smoke and I just got this pit feeling that I had to come down and I got down here and I arrived on scene at the same time as one of the big trucks and this building was fully engulfed
They wouldn’t let me closer so I started running hoses with the firefighters to the fire extinguishers,” said Palmateer
He says the support from city residents and hobbyists has been overwhelming. Though a GoFundMe has been started
Mayor Vincent DeSantis says he had been planning to apply for state grants to preserve the factory
it would have been a great building to restore
One of the floors on the interior had collapsed onto the floor below it and it went all the way down to the ground floor
my hope was to apply for a Main Street Grant this year,” said DeSantis
Lifelong city resident Frank Nethaway is one of the owners of the used car dealership across from the factory
He never imagined something like this happening in downtown
I know DeSantis was trying to work on getting it up

Councilman Jay Zarrelli at a Gloversville Common Council meeting on Friday
GLOVERSVILLE — Jay Zarrelli is officially back on the Gloversville Common Council after a brief resignation following his retirement
At Tuesday's Common Council meeting, the council unanimously voted to reappoint Zarrelli, R-5th Ward, back on the council, after he briefly resigned to avoid potentially jeopardizing his pension with the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision
Unionized nurses at Nathan Littauer Hospital continue to protest what they say is an unacceptable “final” contract offer from management
New York State Nurses Association members at the Gloversville hospital have been picketing
demanding better pay and lower health insurance costs
Dozens of nurses and supporters dressed in bright red shirts chant at the entrance to the hospital’s parking lot
technology has come into the hospital since I’ve become a nurse and the challenges that the nurses face are more difficult,” said Marion Enright
Nurse Marion Enright has worked at the hospital for 36 years
nurses marched to CEO Sean Fadale’s office demanding a better contract
Enright says they’ll continue to protest until then
And it’s very concerned that our CEO is very oblivious to our concerns and demands,” said Enright
Nathan Littauer did not respond to a request for comment
maternity nurse Wendy Bowie said a poor contract impacts patient care
“During the course of my career New York state has lost over 500 maternity beds
and I am worried for the future mothers and the care they receive when management continues to disregard the nurses who care for them,” said Bowie
Unionized nurses say turnover is high due to their current pay and benefits
Some said they have to pay nearly $1,200 a month for insurance
and a proposed 15% pay raise over three years isn’t enough to make ends meet
Bowie says this creates higher stress on the nurses who do stay at the small but “vital” hospital
But my dedication has been taken advantage of
if a nurse is sick and they can’t come to work
that creates intense pressure on an entire unit placing patients and nurses in unsafe and dangerous conditions
We shouldn’t have to work sick and we shouldn’t have to pick up extra time and overtime to ensure that our coworkers and patients aren’t in those situations,” said Bowie
Democratic state Assemblymember Phil Steck of the 110th district joined the demonstration
“We have had a situation where our healthcare system has been declining over time
And we have had people who think it’s about making as much money as possible for themselves and not about patient care
If you want to go into this field as a hospital administrator you should be committed to the public interest and not to your private personal interest,” said Steck
Fadale told the Leader-Herald that the contract offer the hospital made April 3 was fair
Bowie remains optimistic that the union and the hospital administration will be able to reach an agreement
“One thing I’d like to mention is our proposals and their proposals were not significantly different
And as I’ve mentioned they have hired a lot of non-bedside staff members whose one salary could easily make up the difference,” said Bowie
The previous contract expired at the end of last year
