Golden Valley resident Joanie Clausen sued the city
claiming it did not respond to her data practices request for a full copy of the survey in a timely manner
An administrative law judge agreed and fined the city $50
Clausen told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS she was disappointed to see the names of city administrators
“There are people that are still working in upper management here that did not want those seen because those comments were directed at them,” said Clausen
The city told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS no one was available for an interview
but a spokesperson said the judge ruled the questions and names of the city employees who were criticized were considered private under state law

Like many projects born out of passion, “Champions of the Golden Valley” — a feature film screening at this year’s 5Point Film Festival — transformed into something far more powerful and complex than director Ben Sturgulewski ever anticipated
the seasoned adventure film director traveled to Afghanistan to witness the Afghan Ski Challenge
an annual backcountry ski race organized by the Bamyan Ski Club and Alishah Farhang
who nearly became Afghanistan’s first Olympic skier.
already well-versed in how mountain communities connect through snow sports
he found a celebration of peace among rival villages and a shared
undiluted love of skiing unlike anything he had seen before.
that pure joy for skiing was just so alive and well
They don’t have many resources over there
so they were just doing it in their own way with the resources they had on hand — they would make their own skis out of two-by-fours and wooden planks and milk jug bindings
and they would just march up the mountains right behind their homes and go skiing to get through these long winters…” Sturgulewski said
where it’s all about the newest stuff and the nicest gear and it’s almost this status symbol
it really felt like this pure encapsulation of the most joyful
Six weeks after Sturgulewski completed the initial 40-minute cut
the Taliban captured Afghanistan’s capital city
and declared an “interim government” in August 2021.
That’s when Sturgulewski and Katie Stjernholm
embarked on a very different mission: helping members of the Bamyan ski community evacuate the country.
“It was honestly the most trying and difficult three weeks of our lives,” Sturgulewski said
“We were oftentimes working 20-plus hours a day
on the phone constantly with people in Afghanistan
working remotely…with (non-governmental organizations)
“We started entering these rooms where people were getting things done and ultimately
we were successful in helping get out a pretty large number of people
It took months for the filmmakers to return to the project.
“It made us reflect on this idea of like
what’s our obligation to telling the story now
What does the story mean?” Sturgulewski said
“It made us reevaluate everything about this project down to its core and realize that we had a responsibility to rebuild it and to reshape it into this new narrative — it was one thing
but it became this other story about the refugee experience and what our subjects went through.”
Now a global impact campaign and full-length
“Champions of the Golden Valley” follows the Bamyan skiers from their joyous time together on the slopes to the heartbreak of displacement as they
like more than eight million other Afghans
became refugees scattered around the world.
“It’s this window into the refugee experience that I think is really unique because we had the opportunity to capture the lives of this community before they lost so much of what they had built,” Sturgulewski said
“Then we also documented the latter half of that experience
so that allows the audience to see what was lost.”
Like fellow 5Point Film Festival feature “Row of Life,” the documentary is a glimpse into the unexpected moments that reveal our shared humanity.
where there’s a script and there’s actors
you can control every detail of what happens…and a documentary
it’s real life and you’re pointing a camera and witnessing what’s unfolding and life is unpredictable,” Stjernholm said. “I’ve had another film where a subject passed away in the middle of filming and you just have to pivot and adapt
I think that’s why a documentary can be so relatable and why it can really make an impact and make change — because it’s real life
it’s what happens to people and it’s following their journey and you get inspired by people’s courage and resilience
this really happened and this is how people responded to it,” she added
“And I think people can take away a lot from that.”

Golden Valley Mayor Roslyn Harmon told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS she supported the hiring of City Manager Noah Schuchman but has always opposed his salary and would like the city council to reconsider it sometime in the future
A city spokesperson told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that Schuchman was hired at $211,000
but Mayor Harmon said a recent pay raise bumped it to $219,000
Harmon said that’s much higher than comparable-sized cities such as Robbinsdale
It’s closer to the salaries of city managers in cities like Minnetonka and St
where compensation ranges from $237,000 to $245,000
with populations twice as large as Golden Valley
we could’ve done better,” said Harmon. “When we’re talking about a city that’s been going through a lot financially in the past
just being more fiscally responsible.”
Schuchman also received $9,000 to move from Duluth
but still lives there and works in Golden Valley four days a week. The city said Schuchman has to move to Golden Valley by Sept
Mayor Harmon said she was unaware of the September deadline
“I thought that was a little too high,” said Harmon
Schuchman was not available for an interview
but a city spokesperson issued the following statement: “As the City of Golden Valley’s chief executive officer
the city manager is responsible for running its overall and day-to-day business
which is competitive with other cities in Golden Valley’s compensation market.“
Two city council members told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS they supported the financial package and said Schuchman is doing a great job running the city
Editor’s Note: This article previously said the mayor of Golden Valley wanted the salary of the City Administrator to be revoked
It has since been corrected to reconsidered

AZ (AZFamily) — Investigators say a man murdered a woman before a police chase and officer-involved shooting in Kingman on Wednesday afternoon
is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot by police
The situation began just after 1 p.m., when Mohave County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a shooting at a home on Bosque Road in Golden Valley
they found a woman who had been shot to death
Investigators soon identified Muse as a suspect
who was already being sought in connection with another shooting that had happened earlier in Kingman
Around 5 p.m., authorities spotted Muse’s car in the area of Highway 66 and Mohave Airport Drive and attempted to pull him over
sheriff’s deputies and Kingman police on a pursuit into Kingman
The sheriff’s office says Muse fired shots at pursuing officers, striking at least one patrol vehicle, before crashing in the area of Willow Road and Harrison Street
Investigators say Muse got out of his car and exchanged gunfire with officers before he was shot
He was transported to a Kingman hospital before being airlifted to a Las Vegas hospital
The crash and officer-involved shooting will be investigated by the Arizona Department of Public Safety
The name of the woman who was shot and killed has not been released
What led up to her murder remains under investigation by the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office
This is the 24th officer-involved shooting in Arizona this year

A suspect who is facing charges in a stabbing in Golden Valley on Friday “could be related” to a crash that left an 11-year-old girl dead earlier this week
according to the Golden Valley Police Department
Law enforcement said that officers received a call around 6:15 a.m
about a man who reported being stabbed at Theodore Wirth Parkway and Olson Memorial Highway
they found a man with multiple stab wound injuries near a black GMC
He was then brought to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries
Golden Valley police later responded to a call from Minneapolis Parks staff about a “half-naked” man inside a maintenance building and brought him in for additional questioning
officers received a call from a homeowner in the Hidden Lakes community near Theodore Wirth Park whose home had been broken into
An E-bike was missing and police found a pair of shoes inside the home
Surveillance video showed the man who was in custody at the police department running from several houses and trying to get inside
Police later recovered the stolen E-bike in a wooded area near Theodore Wirth Park
the two males got into some type of argument and the suspect began to stab the victim,” said Golden Valley Police Chief Virgil Green
“The truck they were in crashed in a wooded area
and the suspect fled into the Hidden Lakes neighborhood
Officers determined the suspect and victim were both under the influence of some type of illegal substance
and currently we are not releasing the names of the suspect or victim.”
Golden Valley police said the suspect will be booked at the Hennepin County Detention facility and is facing charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and burglary for breaking and entering into the maintenance building
Police added that there is no danger to the public
Golden Valley police said that “the suspect we arrested this morning could be related to a serious car accident on Wednesday morning involving parents taking their kids to school… Where an 11 year old girl died from her injuries.”
two parents and their four children were on the way to school when a driver ran a stop sign at the intersection of County Road 6 and County Road 110 in Independence and struck the family’s vehicle
the West Hennepin Public Safety Department said
All six victims in the family’s vehicle were brought to nearby hospitals, and the family confirmed that the 11-year-old girl died on Friday
An 18-year-old who was charged in connection with a stabbing in Golden Valley last week is also being investigated for his involvement in a crash that killed an 11-year-old girl
Hennepin County prosecutors charged 18-year-old Conner Michael Iversen with assault after an incident on Friday morning in Golden Valley
Investigators allege Iversen stabbed a man in his 50s in the leg near Theodore Wirth Parkway
The victim also told authorities that he was assaulted with a large stick and had injuries to his face
Golden Valley Police said a possible argument between the two men led up to the stabbing
Police report that the teenager was later found partially clothed after breaking into a building at Theodore Wirth Regional Park nearby
investigators allege the teen may have broken into a house in the Hidden Lakes neighborhood
“This was surprising because Golden Valley is a real quiet community — you don’t see these things happen often and when they do it kind of alarms people,” said Golden Valley Police Chief Virgil Green
The West Hennepin Public Safety Department is continuing to investigate a multi-vehicle crash in Independence last week. Police have identified Iversen as one of the drivers involved
11-year-old Lilyana Loycano was on the way to school when her family was involved in a crash
loved ones say Lilyana died from her injuries
Police said the family’s SUV stopped at a four-way stop sign when they were struck while passing through the intersection
Authorities allege that Iversen failed to stop at the stop sign
West Hennepin Police said they are awaiting the accident reconstruction report to determine possible next steps in their case
The Loycano’s church sent 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS a statement on Monday that reads in part
“Good Shepherd is heartbroken over the tragic loss of Lily
and all who are grieving this unimaginable loss
we will continue to offer our support in every way we can,” wrote Pastor Derek Tronsgard from Good Shepherd Lutheran

Golden Valley police were dispatched to a call at Robbinsdale Academy Highview on a report of two juvenile students fighting in a bathroom
with one of the teenagers using brass knuckles
Golden Valley Police Chief Virgil Green told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that possession of brass knuckles in a school is a felony in Minnesota
Green said Assistant Principal Patrick Burrage did not take the situation seriously with his officers on the scene
We let them know that this is a felony,” said Green.
Green said Burrage did not inform officers that the brass knuckles were in the school
police got a search warrant for the school
and that’s when the brass knuckles were discovered in the desk drawer of Assistant Principal Burrage
“Opens up his desk and pulls out the brass knuckles and says
these were in my desk.’ They were in some kind of paper towel
Green said Golden Valley police asked the city attorney to charge Burrage with misdemeanor obstruction
As for the student with the brass knuckles
Green said his office recommended felony assault charges to the county attorney
sustained a concussion and received stitches after the fight
In part to mesh with Trump administration priorities
Golden Valley Electric Association is changing up or eliminating projects funded by two Biden-era federal awards
The utility’s board of directors adopted the modifications in a unanimous vote on Tuesday
“I guess it was fear to lose the awards or have them modified in some way that was not acceptable to us,” Tom DeLong
Golden Valley received both of the awards last year
and they total more than $300 million in grants and loans
GVEA was selected for a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Powering Affordable Clean Energy Program award in June 2024
In September, the Fairbanks-based railbelt utility got $206 million from the USDA in 0% interest loans through the Empowering Rural America Program
$67 million of which could be awarded as grants after the projects’ completion
which has come under fire during the second Trump presidency
Trump moved to freeze IRA funds his first day in office
but a federal judge this month ordered the administration to reinstate already-awarded funds
According to GVEA Director of External Affairs Ashley Bradish
the USDA’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS) approached Golden Valley staff about making amendments to their proposals
giving them a 500-character limit and a deadline of April 25
“We were notified by them that we would have this opportunity to adjust the scope of our projects
it does not mean that is the end all be all
what is going to happen – it’s really allowing us to continue these convertsations with RUS.”
The text approved by the GVEA board Tuesday sticks to that character limit
and DeLong said he’s not sure how the short summary of their proposal adjustments will go over
but that it’s meant to be part of an ongoing dialogue
“I don’t have very much confidence in anything regarding this area and the current administration
this is really keeping our name in the hat and moving the process forward,” he said
The board-adopted language says Golden Valley still wants to use the money to fund construction of two new 46 MW battery energy storage systems and 64 miles of transmission lines
among other additions to the utility’s existing infrastructure
But their modifications strike two key items from the original proposals
One was to retire and refinance debt for the less-reliable of their two coal power plants in Healy
The other was to install upgrades at an independent solar farm in Nenana to support a power purchase agreement between that company and Golden Valley
DeLong said nixing the solar farm upgrades has less to do with federal priorities and more to do with the company that owned the farm “dissolving.”
GVEA had intended to partner with Nenana Solar Farm
which was owned by Anchorage-based Renewable IPP
so we are left without an independent power producer,” DeLong said
In February
Renewable IPP also stepped back from a major solar project in Nikiski due to what their CEO called adverse economic conditions
the pressure to keep it operating is twofold
The GVEA board had previously decided to postpone retiring the underperforming coal plant due to the natural gas crunch in the Cook Inlet
so DeLong said that change isn’t entirely attributable to the new administration
Both of Golden Valley’s plants in Healy are on the list
“Kind of between a rock and a hard spot: whether we remove the language to shut down Unit No
or the reality of the [natural gas] situation.”
the two Biden-era programs called for Golden Valley to develop other methods for creating additional community benefits
and the language the board passed Tuesday says the utility will alter those plans
DeLong declined to comment on exactly what those modifications could look like
the draft community benefit plans aimed to expand educational opportunities to help diversify the workforce
and the federal government under Trump has repeatedly targeted diversity
Bradish said that’s the sort of thing the utility will likely remove from the plans
the funding would very likely be in jeopardy,” she said
Golden Valley Police responded to a call involving two students fighting
One of the students suffered a concussion and received stitches from injuries sustained in the fight with those brass knuckles
Golden Valley Police Chief Virgil Green told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the school’s assistant principal
told officers he was not sure if brass knuckles were used and he did not know where they were if they had indeed been used
RELATED: Golden Valley police want assistant school principal charged with obstruction
it is a felony to possess brass knuckles in a school because they are considered a dangerous weapon
Green told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS his department later secured a search warrant and found the brass knuckles in the desk drawer of Assistant Principal Burrage
let’s just say I found them in the bathroom,” said Green
it was determined that he didn’t find the brass knuckles; he was given the brass knuckles by the teacher who broke up the fight.”
Green originally asked the city attorney to charge Burrage with misdemeanor obstruction of an investigation. But
Chief Green said the city attorney told him there was evidence to charge Burrage with a felony
Green told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS he asked the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office to charge Burrage with felony obstruction
“Our detective division submitted that criminal complaint for review to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office,” said Green. “So
they’re reviewing that complaint as a felony for obstruction of an investigation.”
Robbinsdale Area Schools declined to comment
Attempts to reach Burrage for comment have been unsuccessful
The city of Golden Valley is taking steps to improve safety at one of its parks following a shooting there last April
a boy was hurt after he was shot at Lions Park
Police later found two others shot in Brooklyn Park
and Golden Valley Police Chief Virgil Green says it was connected with the incident at Lions Park.“When something like this happens
it’s going to set off some alarms and people are going to say
am I safe?'” said Green.Quickly after
Green and others with the city met at the park with residents to discuss potential safety upgrades.“We want to make sure that people know that when things happen in Golden Valley
that we’re going to address them,” Chief Green said. Now
the city wants more feedback through a survey asking about things like security cameras or the need for dedicated police patrols at Lions Park.“Lighting is the big one
I would say,” Nord said. While added lighting was an overwhelming request
Green says that is already part of the city plans at Lions Park.“This is something that is going to be put up in 2025,” Green noted. Some residents 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS spoke with have questions about the timing of this survey
coming nine months after the incident.“It feels like a long time to basically validate what the concerns were with the community,” Nord said
“It does feel like a little bit slower than I would expect but I also understand it takes time.”Many residents of this Golden Valley neighborhood can agree a safe experience at this park is a top priority
Residents have until the end of the month to submit their feedback
