he hobbled around the bases after hitting a home run on Opening Day in Miami
Gonzales was placed on the 10-day injured list with a non-displaced left ankle fracture
The injury stemmed from a spring training game against the Tampa Bay Rays in the middle of March when Gonzales fouled a ball off his ankle during an at-bat
Though he made the team’s Opening Day roster
the carry-over effects arose in the first game of the season
“Obviously, the entire offseason and spring training you’re looking forward to playing games,” Gonzales told Pittsburgh Baseball Now on Sunday
“Then something uncontrollable like fouling a ball off and breaking a bone in your ankle
Gonzales relied on a scooter to get around before progressing to walking around in a boot
But Gonzales has since ditched the boot and is back to doing most baseball activities again
Was running on the treadmill (on Saturday)
Before Gonzales returns to the big-league club
he will need to complete a rehab assignment
and a return to the field is on the horizon
Gonzales said that he should be going to Indianapolis “in a week or so” as he works his way back Assuming he doesn’t have any setbacks
his return to the Pirates could come in the not-so-distant future
The Pirates could certainly use a reinforcement
The team’s offense ranks near the bottom in most major categories. They are 27th in batting average (.223), 23rd in on-base percentage (.306), 29th in slugging (.335), 28th in OPS (.641), tied for 28th in home runs (25) and 28th in runs scored (114).
Gonzales is eager to rejoin the lineup and do what he can to provide a spark.
“Regardless of how the team is doing, I’m gonna be a little frustrated just because I can’t be in there,” he said. “The best thing for me to help the team as best I can is just to be healthy. Can’t really do anything in my position right now. Just trying to get healthy so I can help out.”
Gonzales isn’t the only Pirate on the mend, either.
First baseman Spencer Horwitz, who was acquired from the Cleveland Guardians in the offseason, started a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona and has since played in five games.
Horwitz has been sidelined all season after undergoing right thumb/wrist surgery. Last year with the Toronto Blue Jays, Horwitz slashed .265/.357/.433 with 19 doubles, 12 home runs and 40 RBIs in 97 games.
Though the two have yet to share a field together as teammates, Gonzales is familiar with Horwitz’s game. He believes their returns could make a big difference.
“I think we can provide a lot. I’ve played against Spencer my whole minor-league career, so I know what he can bring. He’s a great player, so I’m excited to watch him and play with him on the same team.”
As the Pirates continue to search for answers offensively, perhaps Gonzales — and Horwitz — can help provide some.
They really need him hes a good hitter. And right now half that team cany hit.they need to get rid of the dead wood
Reynolds is a real disappointment thus far this season. I hope he warms up with the weather. He just has that look he gets when he is slumping like he is defeated before he even steps in the batter’s box.

they finally got some: Jared Jones is throwing a baseball again
After a disappointing April that left Pittsburgh Pirates fans desperate for some good news
The right-handed starting pitcher, who has been sidelined for the past six weeks with a UCL sprain in his throwing elbow, was cleared for throwing activity and has already played catch at 45 feet twice, per Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
It will likely be three to four weeks before Jones begins throwing off a mound
but the fact that he is throwing at all marks a significant step in his recovery
His estimated timeline to return to the Majors is 12 weeks
which likely means he won't slot back into the Pirates' starting rotation until after the All-Star break
Pirates second baseman Nick Gonzales
who has been sidelined since Opening Day with a left ankle fracture
has graduated from a walking boot to an ankle brace
and he will likely begin jogging by the end of the week
Right-hander Johan Oviedo is continuing his rehab from a right lat strain at the Pirates' facility in Bradenton
He is throwing from distances up to 90 feet without issue
now 13 months removed from Tommy John surgery
began a rehab assignment with Single-A Bradenton this week and has pitched in two games without issue
Speaking of rehab assignments, first baseman Spencer Horwitz – who underwent offseason wrist surgery – began his this week with Double-A Altoona
and he will likely play in a few more games before transitioning to Triple-A Indianapolis for the remainder of his assignment
Finally, catcher Endy Rodriguez is continuing to recover from a right index finger laceration just above his knuckle and will need to immobilize his finger for another week to give the skin time to heal before he can resume baseball activity

The City of Gonzales is currently advertising for City Clerk
a position mandated by Louisiana law for municipalities that have not opted for Home Rule
Revised Statute 33:421 includes duties of the clerk
the bulk of which relate to conducting regular meetings of the City Council and keeping records thereof
A mayoral appointment subject to council confirmation
Gonzales’ city clerks have headed administrations of two elected mayors over four decades
a stability rarely threatened in the city’s governing circles
Stability is not all it’s cracked up to be
and 2025 is unlike any period in Gonzales’ political history
Tim Riley’s election as mayor broke the stranglehold over the office enjoyed by the old guard
but without mustering a reliable majority of three votes on the City Council
With an ordinance linking the position to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) post
the failure to muster the required three-vote majority for Mayor Riley’s first (and apparently only) choice
When it became clear that Riley’s longtime friend and campaign supporter Wade Petite would not receive council approval
the first-term mayor opted not to recommend any CAO at all
Two of the three candidates for Gonzales Division D council seat: Tim Riley (at left) and Wade Petite (circa 2016)
It remains to be seen whether he exceeded mayoral authority
Mayor requests AG’s Opinion to resolve issue over his Chief of Staff | Pelican Post – Online Newspaper
Riley is “totally unconcerned about the title
Wade is more knowledgeable about local government than any other potential candidate
he has great relationships in Ascension and Wade has opened a lot of doors for the City of Gonzales
the City Clerk position has not been filled by a new face either
who became the clerk when CAO Scot Byrd was dumped by Interim Mayor Ryland Percy in late 2024
would follow Byrd to the newly found City of St
But Boylan remains the titular City Clerk
NOTE: According to state law the sitting City Clerk remains until a replacement is approved
Planning & Development Director Justin Dupuy
All three nominally work in the private sector
but for employers doing business in the new city which is modeled on the City of Central’s move toward near total privatization and elimination of direct employees
Two more top positions in Gonzales’ city government
Jackie Baumann had been the city’s engineer for over a decade before leaving for the private sector
Alvin Broussard was replaced as DPW Director by then Water & Gas Supervisor Rusievelt Vessel
“a real upgrade” in the mayor’s opinion
we have no plans to hire replacements for any of those remaining vacancies,” Mayor Riley said
“We are happy with All South (Consulting Engineers) which assumed most of the duties that used to be under the City Engineer and the Planning Director
We engaged a private accounting firm to draft the upcoming budget
and I think you’ll see some real improvement there.”
It is not as though the bar was set all that high
City of Gonzales “ripped off” by unlicensed contractor due to “system failure” in 2024 | Pelican Post – Online Newspaper
“A system failure” led to “the City of Gonzales getting ripped off” by an unlicensed fence company contracted to provide various services in 2024
That was the assessment of Mayor Tim Riley’s administration on March 31 during a discussion of vendor report regarding Liberty Fence & Supply
Riley’s Chief of Staff opined that Liberty Fence overcharged the city by “hundreds of thousands of dollars” and…
could have happened without somebody on the inside
it is the most egregious lapse in fiscal responsibility in the history of this city.”
Four of the five highly placed individuals were positioned to monitor the doings of Liberty Fence and other vendors
Former Gonzales CAO points fingers on social media
“I would have had a hard time coming up with a case to retain any of them after we uncovered the excesses allowed by the former administration,” Petite says now
“We’ve received over 60 applications for the City Clerk position
Mayor Riley has decided to offer the position
to a highly qualified individual who would be another upgrade over the former and current occupants.”
Petite said the candidate for City Clerk will be recommended to the Council during its May 12 meeting
Should the cap on Ascension Parish Council member salaries ($19,600) be lifted

(KGTV) – On Wednesday before his team’s pregame warm-up
Singing Hills Little League coach Alex Gonzales gave some simple advice before taking the field
“Start small and then we’ll build from there,” Gonzales said
Easy but effective advice from their skipper
“My son came and joined the league when he was 4 years old
Gonzales has certainly gotten involved as he coached multiple teams in that time
“We got them Nike uniforms right off the bat and New Era hats so they felt like a big leaguer,” Gonzales said
and we’re continuing to improve the facilities
even though they may not make it to the big leagues
they still feel like they’re a big leaguer.”
Gonzales’ work and coach life balance is one that does require a lot of focus and dedication to the community
“I had the opportunity to work for LA City
I’ve been there as a fireman for the last 17 years," Gonzales said
“He gives his heart and soul every day to these kids
and then he wakes up at 4 to be here in time for a 7 o’clock game
He doesn’t miss a trick,” Erika Broderdorf
“These kids are excelling because of him.”
ABC 10News wants to recognize Gonzales for his work dedicated to protecting and building up not one
ABC 10News and LEAD San Diego chose Gonzales as our Leadership Award winner for the month of May
Being a member of the Los Angeles Fire Department is no small feat or assignment
all of the devastating fires four months ago in the area
Gonzales told ABC 10News he worked on the Palisades and Hollywood fires
catching up on his sleep from the long drive or working on all of the fires,” Broderdorf said
He’s here and he’s taking care of the fields and making sure they’re ready to go.”
The juggling of a life-saving job and an important mentoring role of a coach may be tough
and others for supporting and working together with him on his journey
it’s just the kids; being around these kids

SAN ANTONIO - A man was booked from his hospital bed after authorities say he was driving over 100 mph during a fatal two-vehicle crash on San Antonio’s Far West Side last week
was booked from his hospital bed following the April 23 crash that took the life of Patricia Browning
The carnage unfolded just before 12:30 p.m
near Alamo Ranch Parkway and Lone Star Parkway
they found two mangled cars and Browning gravely injured
allegedly downplayed his speed to investigators
claiming he "could not have been traveling more than 50 mph." But crash data
and scene video told a very different story — showing Gonzales’ Ford Mustang was clocking 108 mph in a 45 zone
Gonzales was proxy-booked for manslaughter and later bonded out on $100,000

River Parishes Community College hosted its 2025 Industry Match Day at the Gonzales campus
Third and fourth semester students from process technology
electrical and instrumentation and physical science programs were connected with potential employers and mentors through the event
which was organized by RPCC's Energy Sciences Division
Participating industry partners included Ascension Fabrication
"Industry Match Day exemplifies what's possible when education and industry collaborate meaningfully," Dr
who serves as dean of Energy Sciences at RPCC
"We're incredibly proud of our students for stepping into these spaces ready to showcase their skills and eager to grow into the next generation of Louisiana's workforce."
who serves as RPCC'ss director of work-based learning and westbank initiatives
added that the event was about relationship-building as well as potential jobs
"Employers get to see the talent pipeline up close
clarity and real-world connections," Whitehead said in the release
Notice: Transcripts are machine and human generated and lightly edited for accuracy
where we hear a range of perspectives on how government should function
what's led to this moment in American history
we will focus on the rule of law and President Trump's apparent willingness to test its limits
He served as attorney general and White House counsel under the George W
Bush administration and is the only person to ever hold both positions
welcome to the "News Hour." Thanks for joining us
you did choose to come forward and endorse Kamala Harris
you said Donald Trump is — quote — "the most serious threat to the rule of law in a generation."
"What we're seeing today is even more than I had imagined."
100 days into this second Trump presidency
one of the things that's important for people to understand is that the rule of law constrains power
And there are other things that constrain power
And people who want to exercise powers without restrictions
they want to eliminate or at least weaken those constraints
it seems to me that the rule of law is under some serious stress
He has his general counsel in the White House
He has the attorney general who's advising him on this
And even when you were in the White House under President George W
you were accused of enabling an abuse of executive power for some of the legal arguments you crafted regarding the war on terror
So is it just true that every White House crafts the legal arguments that it needs to move its agenda forward
I think what we're seeing here is the president surrounding himself with loyalists who give maybe an extra push towards trying to do what facilitates what the president wants to have happen
So their interpretation is one that perhaps you and I might — you and others that I served with might disagree with
most times isn't a lawyer and certainly doesn't have the time to sit down and go through the law books
And that's why he does take advice from lawyers
Kennedy was very loyal to his brother John F
you have lawyers in place that make a good faith attempt to interpret the law and are honest with the president saying
But is that the case in this instance with this president and this team
lawyers disagree about the interpretation of laws
And I think what this president is trying to do is surround himself with people who he believes will be loyal to him
will give him the advice that will allow him to carry out the agenda for which he campaigned on
I — unless you're there in the room and you're with the lawyers and the president
you're not really sure what advice is being given to the president
There's also the question about whether or not the administration is in compliance with court orders from judges
a Maryland man who the administration said they mistakenly deported to El Salvador
We saw the president last night say that he could bring Abrego Garcia back if he wanted to
Do you believe that this administration is flouting a judge's orders in this case
I think one might have legitimate questions as to whether or not there was a flouting
A judge did order the administration to facilitate a transfer
appeared to concede that he did have the authority to simply ask for this individual to be returned
which is going to raise a question in the eyes of the judge
then have you asked and why haven't you asked
You have been ordered to facilitate the return of this individual
And so I think that might have been a sort of…
he seems to be saying he's not asked and that he doesn't want to
Does that mean that he's ignoring the judge's order
I think what you're going to — given this new statement by the president
you're probably going to see a request by the judge asking those very same questions
And we will see what the administration says or does
I'm often — I have been asked many times
we will have a constitutional crisis when the Supreme Court of the United States commands the administration to do something pursuant to the Constitution within a certain period of time
you called Donald Trump the most serious threat to the rule of law in a generation
Based on the norm-breaking and the rule-bending we have seen so far
are you worried that you can't get it back once it's gone
it takes a while to build up a cathedral like the rule of law
but it can be built back up with the right kind of leadership and dedication
I'm hopeful we will get it back once we have changes perhaps in leadership in Washington
I think Congress has been missing in action
So once we have new leadership in Washington
And I'm hopeful that the institutions that exist today
those norms that have not been torn down yet
I hope they will continue to provide a check on the excised — the excess use of power

“you just kind of understand how everyone needs to be loved a little bit more.”

She was a teacher at Sparks High School. According to the Sparks High website, she taught art and photography.
Her son, Carson Gonzales, 20, is being held on murder and battery charges in her death and the critical injuring of another woman in the house on Powder Drive. Police originally released the spelling of his name as Gonzalez but have since corrected it.
A 20-year-old Reno man was arrested on suspicion of murdering his mother and stabbing a second woman at a home on Powder Drive in northwest Reno on Saturday night.

including right-hander Jared Jones and second baseman Nick Gonzales
Jones (right elbow UCL sprain) is cleared to throw and already has had two sessions of light catch from 60 feet with no issues
the Pirates will stretch him out to 90 feet and 120 feet with intent and good form
“It’s going to be a collaborative effort
with our pitching department and our performance team,” Tomczyk said
“(We want him to) continue to be pain free
so he’s going to need some time to build up.”
Once he advances in his throwing progression
the next steps will eventually lead to a rehab assignment
the initial rough estimate is that Jones could be inserted back into the Pirates’ rotation in roughly 12 weeks
but nothing is set in stone according to Tomczyk
As for Gonzales, who has been sidelined with a non-displaced fracture in his left ankle since Opening Day
“He started walking normally – a little bit of support with what we call an ankle brace or AFO,” said Tomczyk
You’ll probably see him taking ground balls.”
is to get him jogging and doing some light agility by the end of the week

Gonzales went 1 for 3 with a home run and two strikeouts in the Pirates' season-opening loss to the Marlins. He exited the game after hitting a two-run homer and slowly making his way around the bases in the sixth inning.

testing Bucs' infield depthPirates recall versatile left-handed-hitting ValdezMarch 29th
In Gonzales’ place, the Pirates recalled utility man Enmanuel Valdez
The club is sending Gonzales back to Pittsburgh to see a foot specialist, so there isn’t a good estimate for how long he will be on the shelf. A nondisplaced fracture is a different type of injury than what Oneil Cruz experienced in 2023 when he fractured his left ankle
Gonzales fouled multiple pitches off his ankle in a Spring Training game on March 19 at Port Charlotte
but he was able to go through workouts and finish out the spring without issue
Shelton mentioned postgame Thursday that the Pirates started to notice Gonzales looked a bit hobbled when fielding a popup in the bottom of the fifth
but he was still in a good enough spot to swing a bat the next half-inning
And it’s hard to argue with the result -- a two-run shot to left field -- but he was lifted for Adam Frazier after a slower-than-normal trot around the bases
"Just watching him run around the bases
just didn't like what we saw,” Shelton said after the game Thursday
The Pirates were counting on Gonzales being a run producer this year after a solid 2024 campaign in which he slashed .270/.311/.398 with seven home runs and 49 RBIs over 94 games
it seemed he had claimed the position as his own after a year of internal competition
The injury comes at an inopportune time, as the Pirates are already down one player on the right side of their infield -- first baseman Spencer Horwitz (right wrist surgery)
Endy Rodríguez started at first base the first two games of the season
but he’s also going to need to take reps behind the plate to relieve Joey Bart
The other options on the roster are utility infielders Jared Triolo and Adam Frazier
who are also going to have to play second base
Valdez adds some depth to the infield as well, though he has barely played first base (72 1/3 career Minor League innings, including 23 last season). He has primarily played second and third base, and was acquired this offseason from the Red Sox to add some depth to the infield
Valdez slashed .214/.270/.363 with six home runs and 28 RBIs over 223 plate appearances in the Majors
and he had a .776 OPS in 50 games at Triple-A Worcester
While Valdez's Major League stats were lacking last season, his peripherals were encouraging. According to Baseball Savant
he registered better-than-average clips for average exit velocity (89.4 mph)
hard-hit percentage (41.8%) and whiff rate (22.1%)
left-handed ability to hit,” Shelton said Friday on what’s appealing about Valdez
“We knew he could hit when we acquired him
The fact that he can play all over the diamond is something that we kinda value.”
Valdez wasn’t the Pirates’ only option at second base. Nick Yorke, the team’s No. 5 prospect according to MLB Pipeline
was one of the team’s final cuts this Spring Training
and while his Grapefruit League stats weren’t great (.206 batting average
he hit the ball hard (a team-best 95.4 mph average exit velocity)
Yorke also took some reps at first base this spring
the Pirates didn’t seem to want to deviate from the plan they have in place for him just yet

we wanted to get him on the ground and get his feet moving a little bit,” Shelton said

but those players are making progress with their rehab
Nick Gonzales hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning in the Pirates home opener vs
Pirates manager Derek Shelton said after the game that he suffered some pain from two foul balls off his left ankle against the Tampa Bay Rays on March 19
He also didn't like what he saw from him running around the bases
Pittsburgh placed Gonzales on the 10-day Injured List on March 28 with a non-displaced fracture of the left ankle
with Enmanuel Valdez coming up as his replacement
Gonzales was originally non-weight bearing back on April 2 and using a scooter to get around
but as of the latest update from Pirates senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk
His next step for his rehab will occur in 10 days
which the Pirates hope will bring good news
"If we get the healing that we'd like to see, then it's off to the races for Gonzo," Tomczyk said to José Negron of DK Pittsburgh Sports
Jared Triolo was a last minute scratch for the Pirates in the series finale vs
the New York Yankees on April 6 at PNC Park
with Sheltons saying that Triolo's back locked up about 15 minutes before the game
Triolo went on the Injured List on April 7
as the Pirates called up infielder Tsung-Che Cheng from Triple-A Indianapolis
Tomczyk said that Triolo has improved every day since his injury
but that he hadn't resumed baseball activities as of April 9
He also said that Triolo will likely need a rehab assignment
Triolo has played in six games for the Pirates this season
He started two games each at first base and second base and also one at third base
Had he started at shorstop like he was supposed to
he would've started all positions in the infield for the Pirates in the first 10 games

In a Pitchfork review of SML's Small Medium Large album
“There were no rules at Enfield Tennis Academy (ETA)
The tiny Los Angeles cocktail bar… became a destination for the new jazz scene’s westward migration from Chicago to L.A.; a weekly improv session led by Tortoise and Isotope 217 guitarist Jeff Parker was the highlight of the schedule
ETA officially shut down at the end of 2023
closing another chapter in the history of West Coast jazz
It will take a long time to uncover the full extent of ETA’s influence on the L.A
several other albums recorded at ETA have been released to similar music press acclaim
and the word has gotten out about the much missed venue
What's lesser known is that all of the recordings done at ETA were done by one person: Engineer and gear designer/builder
We worked together for five years at my former studio
after a 23 year run.) Bryce and I recently sat down for a chat about his role in the ETA recordings
In a Pitchfork review of SML's Small Medium Large album
What's lesser known is that all of the recordings done at ETA were done by one person: Engineer and gear designer/builder
All the ETA recordings were done live to 2-track tape
"I've got to record these folks here." We had Jay Bellerose
and I started getting annoyed that I wasn't recording it because it sounded so good
I almost worked with Jay in the studio a few times
Did having Bryce tracking at ETA affect the shows for you
He was there from almost the very beginning
just recording us and not even to really document anything
Just as an exercise for something that he was interested in
I have recordings of us from him that go way back; like random quartets at ETA
He played me some where I wouldn't be super happy with the way that my guitar was captured
and then we talked and he would move things around until he got it dialed in
He was live mixing the band to the 2-track tape machine in the way that Tom Dowd and engineers way back used to record jazz in the '50s
It went from a way to keep ourselves busy and learning through this process
to things becoming a lot more refined in terms of the band
Our band was finding an improvisational identity through a lot of trial and error
and an organic natural processes of discovery – creating these relationships and community
Did having Bryce there to document these sessions have an influence from playing standards to doing more improvisational performances
Nobody came into this thing with any commercial ambitions
It was more about dealing with the art of improvising and recording
the word got out and more musicians wanted to play there
A real community developed around what was happening at the place
and the music started to become viewed as an important piece of what was happening in the creative music community in Los Angeles
That's when it seemed like Bryce was really documenting things
recording almost every group that played there
Cats like Terrace Martin and some really high profile musicians
How did that feel for you as an artist to be in the middle of that
It was really Michael Ehlers from Eremite Records
heard the band when we were freely improvising
you guys really got a thing.” Ehlers is an improvised music aficionado; from the Grateful Dead to William Parker
He felt like what we were doing was something special
“Who’s this cat over here in the corner with this tape machine?” That's when he decided that he wanted to put out a record
It was captured so beautifully and well put together
We spent some time curating the recordings – we sifted through hours and hours and hours of material until we settled on those four pieces that were on Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy
It's nice to see Bryce doing this and what you all did there
I've known a lot of engineers and a lot of brilliant cats
I can't think of anybody who is more brilliant than that dude
That's straight up – I've never met anybody like him
jeffparkersounds. com
How did you get started recording at the club
I bought a stereo Nagra IV-S [tape recorder] from a guy in Chicago
as we'd had computers in the studios for years
so I used an old Ampex MX-10 [four by two stereo mixer] at first
The engineering work I had been doing had become less fun
Learning engineering at The Hangar was a no pressure situation – creative and fun
I'm going to do the strings like this." It got really boring
and I missed not knowing how recordings would work out
when I could experiment in a low-pressure situation
That hadn't happened in a long time in L.A
What gear did you use for recording these shows
and used that with a BG1 for bus compression
“I’ll put a microphone in front of the drums and see what happens.” But the mics were all sonically connected in a live setting
I could only hear so much on headphones because it's loud
I'd do a recording and listen back to try to pick out what was happening
Maybe the upright bass mic would be where all the bleed was
"Try something once and listen later." Everything about it was so different from any studio experience; zero control and just four knobs
Sometimes I’d find that I needed more bass
”Why does this sound so shitty on one side?” The mic was picking everybody up
I learned which mics sounded better for different instruments
but it's not a problem when I'm listening back
I started listening to all these old Rudy Van Gelder records
and I'd hear all the crazy flaws and big moves on volume control that I never noticed before
and I started to love it and embrace how chaotic it was
and Gregory Uhlmann all have pedals and stuff
and all of a sudden Josh would be so loud but his fader was all the way down
because it's all packed together and everybody..
People are fretting about half dB difference in mixes
when there's a six dB jump on something here
and I'll realize something is panned in the wrong place
[ laughter ] But I love that part of it
and get his perspective on the shows and the recordings done there
There's a very specific throughline between my days in the indie rock scene and how we would eventually approach a jazz program at our restaurant
and I always noticed that everybody in L.A
had their “main” band and then a side project
it felt increasingly harder to get people to come out
yet they always seemed more intrigued by one-time-only side project shows
Jeff [Parker] approached the Monday residency in the same fashion – at the time he had The New Breed
which had albums out on International Anthem
But he also wanted to do something different and pull together other artists he’d worked with – that's how we ended up having the ETA IVtet
and Anna at the time were busy as session musicians during a majority of the year
Anna Butterss would be busy touring with Andrew Bird
but then would come “home” to the residency at ETA
so knowing that it wasn’t a high-paying show we wanted to make it extremely creatively satisfying
Musicians would reach out all the time saying
Can I bring my band there?” and that wasn't of interest to me
By the time it really got rolling with Bryce recording
the whole point was that it became an ethos of artist development rather than just a “venue.” We would often hang out on Monday nights
which were always usually Jeff as a resident
but the other nights when the IVtet weren’t there we’d get new people in to record their experimentation – always via two sets and fully improvised
because I wanted to talk to people about their music and challenge them to bring something new into the space
The focus on being “just a bar” would help reinforce this
A handful of musicians who are all friends would be having a drink at the bar
“When are all of you going to get together and finally play?” Sure enough
three weeks later they would be doing an improvised night together
Everyone was working their ass off post-COVID
so going free for two sets was a welcome release from the rehearsed acts they had been touring
and they'd have this awesome analog recording of this new concept to take back
"What do we have today?" It would challenge everybody
to improvise on the fly based on what the different artists wanted to bring in
and Gregory Uhlmann started this whole contingent of ambient-focused solo/duo/trio sets
They would set up all these pedals across the floor and everyone would sit down
They had four or five different amps that they would use for different things
It would be Bryce's challenge to home in on how he could capture all this in an organic setting and live mix it
The idea was to give people a place to stretch in a safe environment
knowing that it would be archived in a way that's not totally devoid of soul
Not just throwing up a Zoom recorder or a sterile Pro Tools setup
Bryce's mix actually resembles someone listening to it
because he is trying to pick out what their dialogue is all while it's happening in real time
This is especially the case with artists that may not have had a chance to play together before
A lot of the shows and recordings then became the genesis point for full albums that they might record elsewhere
is to keep the community going and keep that same ethos of experimentation over it just being a jazz show
It's letting the artists build a community together and interact
because that's still more important than just having one space
instagram. com/etahlp
At what point did you abandon the Ampex MX-10 and build your own mixer
That means somebody was singing out of tune and someone played too many notes
and I can't capture the good time or the party
Jeff set the pace there for improvisational playing where musicians are really communicating
but live recordings can be all over the place
What worked about the ETA sessions is that they were fully improvisational
You can feel people communicating together
Sometimes it's not working; sometimes it sounds like the bass player and drummer don't like each other
[ laughter ] A whole session might be useless
Another part of my reasoning was that there's so much cool music going on
if I could provide a cool document of it – a mirror – that would be neat
You can pull your phone out and capture what you play
Does someone enjoy listening back to an iPhone that was sitting on a music stand
These recordings with the Nagra and the bus compressor
they were fun to record and listen to
Jeff was abandoning doing standards and the full improvisational sets started happening
"It's 42 minutes," and he moved to these improvisational sets
and I probably would not have done that if there wasn't inspiring music to record
You were all feeding off of each other: Jeff changed what he was doing because of the recordings
and you responded to that and upped the gear
and make my role be forgotten about during the performance."
How much of that is having the audience there
I would set up in the back of ETA in the bar
I think a lot of people forgot I was there
Jeff set the tone for the improvisational thing
but it worked well as a living room with people right next to each other
and that's what translates on the recordings
I got addicted to that clarity from live to 2-track
I was inspired by people like Roy DuNann of Contemporary Records
and why do a lot of newer recordings not have that now
I never would have made the jump to understanding that it was from doing it in a little club
I might have thought maybe it's from a microphone
I had to go through all the motions of figuring out that the upright mic can't be a condenser
It grew from the constraints of live recording
which I'm sure people like Rudy Van Gelder and others struggled with back then
My recordings started to remind me of those recordings
There are not a lot of audience sounds on Jeff's Mondays..
I can't use this type of mic placement." Because I wanted to minimize the audience noise
I quickly started using hypercardioid mics as close as they could be
Then it started to sound like old live to 2-track recordings
But even in the front of the room where the music was
Everybody was focused on what was going on
You don't want someone's random conversation and yelling
Let's zoom in on the mics and the mixer a little bit
How many channels do you have on the new mixer
The channels have switches with three different impedances
If I have a tube mic in front of a guitar amp
and sometimes I have a box with step-up transformers – basically passive DIs in reverse – that dumps into the mix bus as well
Say I use the [AKG] C 12s on the bottom of a Hammond B3
I'll use a step-up transformer dumped into the bus
That's a Roy DuNann thing – skip the preamp
My next mixer will have a switch to take the preamp out of the circuit
so I can turn it more into a passive mixer
I don't need a preamp – I can just have an input transformer that goes into the bus
so if I take the headphones off the music in the room is much louder
and it's uncomfortable if they get too loud
I'll pick out a part where the bass plays solo
I'll transfer through a pair of Avedis [E12G] graphic EQs
I'll push it down on the side that it’s panned to
I'll bump up 1 kHz or such and it's better
so I can do a lot with those EQs later to pound it into shape
so in the headphones there's no way I can hear any low end
I also have a sidecar with four extra mic pres and two extra line inputs that I sometimes use
But the problem then is that I'll have a more complex mix
That main mixer with one mic per person works well
If I put a DI'd keyboard and a guitar amp off on one side
and it's going to sound too dry on the other side
I have to build the mix with microphones and build the image of the mix
Going back to your standard four-channel setup
what are your mics that you've landed on now for a four-piece band
Mainly I use a lot of the beyerdynamic M 160s and Sennheiser [MD] 441 hypercardioids
I'll stick that right over the kick drum and pan that to one side
I also might use an [AKG] C 12VR because the low end’s a lot better
but it has to be the right kind of drummer and the right placement
or it gets a little crazy on the bottom end
but I like the better clarity of the better mics
The beyerdynamic M 160s and 441s are real workhorses because they're so directional; I can cut out bar noise and that helps
If I have the drum set panned to one side and upright bass panned to the other
but the upright's eight inches from the ride cymbal
the beyerdynamic is a ribbon mic so the cymbal sounds nice
I can crank the gain up on that to get all the bass I want
because when they go to the ride it's on the other side
it would probably compete with that bass mic
Sometimes I'll add another one for people like Jay
I'll stick another beyerdynamic M 160 back there
How many recordings do you think you did at ETA
Back in the Sacramento days, the recording process was pretty fast and straightforward. Later, working with Jonathan Wilson [ Tape Op #96 ]
I was recording these crazy sessions with people like James Gadson
and we’d transfer the tape and work off the computer
By the time it got into later – Father John Misty
or Jonathan Wilson solo records – it started to become all computer
but it started to become a lack of decision-making and a real lack of any effort on my part as the engineer
I could even pull out my phone and look at it
all I'm doing is keeping the levels from overloading on the computer?" Like I said
so if it got too intensive it was hard for me
I can't listen to ten phrases of a vocal and figure out which one is perfectly in tune
"Can we fix that vocal?" and I'd be thinking
I can't hear what they're hearing." It was frustrating as an engineer because I hated that aspect of digging into the computer all day
but after a day of vocal comping I'd think it sounded worse
If somebody else is happy with their performance
"The one that you're not happy with is the one we should use." It felt more disconnected
and that's why the live to 2-track recording is so connected
There was too much focus on manipulation in the computer
In those earlier sessions with Jonathan Wilson
Sometimes it'd be two hours or a day to mix
but then Jonathan and I got into building songs with the two of us
He's such a talented producer and musician
Whole passes on tracks without punching in
But when it got into the modern Pro Tools days
doing guitar takes could take all day on one song
The live to 2-track started out as a curiosity
but now it all makes sense and that's what works with me
All this computer manipulation was not enjoyable
I personally think it makes it less enjoyable listening to records
I can buy pancakes of eco pack in a cardboard box for cheap
The 7-inch plastic reels I can get for free
I'll dump the old tape off to those and load new tape
How often do you have to align the Nagra
It's not like aligning other machines; it's annoying to do
It doesn't have the easy parameters that an Otari or Studer has
but I've tweaked it to how I want it to act
The machine is so perfect for what it does
For field recordings and location recordings
ETA's Ryan Julio began curating sessions with players
There were some that were not something to be released
but every one of them was fun and inspiring to listen to
it got super interesting with synth players
I did one that was [guitarists] Nick Reinhart and Josh Klinghoffer; just a duo
Or two drum sets: We had Abe Rounds and Mark Guiliana
It's the coolest recording; two drummers just going at it
That did start to happen and that was good
There was no intention of even putting anything out
Getting paid occasionally changed my perspective a bit
"Let's record this with the intention of putting it out." At that point
people could hear what the records sounded like
This was mainly because of that first Jeff Parker record
I'm very focused on people hearing these recordings
because it's so easy to do these recordings in the sense of time
Now I can be a little bit more selective on what I do
so we'll talk about that before and discuss the idea of putting a record out
if somebody said they don't want to put anything out then I might not be that interested
what do you want to do with it?" I want people to hear these recordings
Since these interviews were done in November of 2024
Bryce is continuing to do live to 2-track recordings and Ryan is still booking shows at various venues in Los Angeles

Congressman Tony Gonzales represents Texas’s Twenty-Third District
which stretches from western San Antonio all the way to the outskirts of El Paso
but Gonzales says his upbringing gave him the education he needed to represent this unwieldy stretch of land: He spent his first years in central San Antonio and his middle school years living with his grandparents in Camp Wood
a town of five hundred or so two hours west of the city.
state legislators redrew the Twenty-Third’s boundaries
didn’t use this opportunity to move to the right
he has emerged as one of the most independent—one of the only independent—voices in Congress
breaking with his party on a number of high-profile votes.
Texas Monthly: You represent about 800,000 Texans spread out over the Hill Country
What’s more difficult: representing so many different Texans or being a dad to six kids?
Tony Gonzales: Difficult is representing all those people
TG: My oldest is 24—she’s about to commission into the Air Force
and we’ve got four boys in the middle
TM: You joined the Navy when you were pretty young.
My grandparents were very influential to me
I’d already been living on my own—I’d lived on my own since I was sixteen—but it was very difficult for me
and so I’m a few months from graduating high school
TM: What were you looking for in the military
TG: My father was in the Army; my grandfather was in the Army
A lot of people in my family were in the Army
I knew as a kid that I was going to serve—and I was going to serve in the Army
“You should go to the Navy recruiter.” I didn’t even know how to swim
doing cryptology—which is a pretty amazing skill set.
TM: You were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq
TG: I did two years of training in cryptology before I got to my duty station
Basically any type of communication: cellular communication
TM: You rose up to master chief petty officer
You’ve said that makes you the highest-ranked enlisted member in Congress.
TG: The highest ranking enlisted member to ever serve in Congress
E1 is the lowest rank and E9 is the highest rank
A lot of that was because if there was a tough job
I’d be the first one to volunteer for it
Less than one percent of the enlisted force becomes an E9
I always say Congress is a pretty tough place
and everyone tries to bend you and break you
You don’t want to be on the other end of a master chief—they’re just mean
What perspective does that give you in Congress
you get stuck with talking points—you know
that actually impacts somebody’s life
and there’s a time for policy.
On the front end of my life, I was able to actually be there on the ground. But that [experience] goes away if you don’t stay sharp. Just in the last week, I was in Juárez. No one goes to Juárez
Everyone’s so afraid it’s a dangerous city
I was in Germany with the sergeant major of the Army out in the field
and I’m out there with soldiers that are actually doing the work
TM: We’re in very different lines of work
but I feel I’m most useful when I’m on the ground seeing what’s happening.
TG: Yeah—’cause no one can tell you what you saw
If you’re relying on somebody else to tell you what it’s like
TM: You represent a huge district that includes people in rural and urban areas
What do they have in common—characteristics you’re able to use as a bridge?
TG: These are people who want a better life for themselves
and then Reeves County and Loving County and Pecos
and so you got a lot of families that know what it’s like to work hard
Maybe they’ve done well for themselves
but they’ve worked hard for it.
Did you ever feel like members were just using these trips as photo ops?
we’ve hosted twenty-five [congressional delegations]
And this is what I told my team: Even if their goal is to come down for a photo op
they’re going to get more than they bargained for
You mentioned [Specialist Bishop E.] Evans
who passed away—that’s a prime example
we made it a point that you’re not just going to get a picture of the wall and get back on a plane
We flew [members of Congress] into San Antonio
and they drove all the way to Eagle Pass—a three-hour drive
We had them visit with local law enforcement and ranchers and business owners
I wouldn’t be so upset about these [undocumented immigrants] coming through my property if they would stay and help me pick my crops.” They were exposed to everything that my district has: legal immigration
they walked away with more than they bargained for.
TM: That’s a good opportunity to talk about your support for the bipartisan HIRE Act, which would make it easier for people to get temporary work visas
Texas is experiencing severe labor shortages
Why do you think it’s important to expand our visa system right now
TG: I have worked very hard to separate illegal and legal immigration
and not just in construction and agriculture
Part of my trip to Juárez was to the consulate there
where they [issued more than 270,000 visas in 2023] alone—it’s unbelievable
It’s well staffed and well organized
and they’re walking me through how they find fraud—it’s very stringent
It’s not like they’re just handing out candy
So I think that’s part of the story: If somebody wants to come here legally and go to work
TM: You recently said that when it comes to ICE raids and mass deportation
it’s really important for ICE to prioritize criminals
not “the guy that’s picking tomatoes.” What should happen with the guy picking tomatoes
the people who came here illegally but don’t have a criminal record
but that would take us down this route where there’s no return—today’s politics can’t even handle us all agreeing to deport a convicted murderer
“It’s not enough to just deport him
I want everybody who’s here illegally deported—the guy that picking tomatoes
they’re all just here for a better life.” So I’ve tried to just say
“Can we focus on [the convicted criminals] first
And table what happens to those other people
because that’s a pretty thick onion that we would open up there.”
Essentially all my energy is focused on getting these convicted criminal aliens out of our country—which
That’s going to require a lot of resources
When you were explaining your support for the bill
you talked about some of the hard personal experiences you had with guns coming up.
and she and I had to escape an abusive environment—honestly
you’ll find this in San Antonio as well
the alcohol and the domestic violence abuse
You can’t unsee some of these things
And I think it’s important for me as a lawmaker to view it through the lens of “How do I protect the Constitution
and how do I also protect innocent people?” And I believe you can do both
You don’t have to erode the Constitution
and you don’t have to leave people on their own to fend for themselves like it’s the Wild West
That bill was an early test for me on navigating that.
you had a battle in your primary—you barely won the runoff
Today you’re one of the only independent voices left in Congress
Why are you at odds with members of your own party
TG: I’ve never been a person that’s just in the middle of the pack
I told my team that if we’re not going to stand up for the things that are important for us
Are you going to get it right all the time
Yes—but I work very hard to look at it through the lens of “not me.” A lot of politicians have this flowchart where the first question is “Is this going to help me get reelected?” instead of “Is this the right thing for our country
or my district?” I just don’t view the world that way.
And if you’re gonna [break with your party]
and I’ve had to raise astronomical amounts of resources
That last race—that wasn’t even my toughest race
I don’t go around poking people in the chest
I’ll be meeting with the Speaker of the House here in a couple hours
and when it comes to things that are important
TM: You recently cowrote a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson asking him to cut spending and deliver on Trump’s agenda but without slashing programs like Medicaid and SNAP
he and I are having the Medicaid discussion today
TM: I’ll let you go prepare for that talk with the Speaker
