— Jillian Zapka will be representing Good Hope High School in the upcoming Fair Queen pageant this fall and she’s already looking forward to getting back on stage
This was her first pageant since second grade
and she had so much fun being around her friends while preparing
“It was so much fun being with all the girls
We truly were there for each other throughout the entire pageant
We all got to watch each other the day before and give each other advice
It was a great environment,” Zapka said
“I’ve worked with my baton coach
and Julie Graham has been helping me for about five weeks with interviews
Jillian was given some great advice before everything got underway
and she talked about her service initiative and how much it means to her
“Some advice that people gave me was to just be myself
and as long as I show the judges the best of my abilities
no matter what the outcome was,” Zapka said
which focuses on spreading breast cancer awareness
because people need to know how important early detection of any cancer really is
that can be the difference between overcoming the disease or having it spread throughout your body.”
Her performance during the pageant touched a lot of people’s hearts
and she talked about her reaction and everyone else’s reaction to her winning
A lot of younger girls were watching her performance at the pageant
and being a role model for them is important to her
“I think it touched a lot of people’s hearts
since cancer is so prominent in society today,” she said
“I was honored that I was chosen out of such a great group of girls
They were all so happy for me and supportive
It is important for them to find a role model who is a positive and Godly person that they can follow.”
Jillian gave some advice to those girls that want to compete in pageants themselves
saying that God played a huge role in her performance
She shared her favorite Bible verse as well
it doesn’t matter what the outcome ends up becoming,” she said
“He played a big role in my performance
and we did the same thing before we went out for awards
because without the Lord establishing each of my steps
I wouldn’t have made it to where I am today.”
Jillian reflected on her most memorable moment from the pageant and what she learned something about herself during the competition
“My most memorable moment was right before awards when we were all praying for each other and just supporting each other,” she said
“The biggest thing I learned was to be more confident with what I do
I want people to remember my service initiative and how important it is for us to come together to make people more aware of the importance of early detection.”

– The Good Hope Lady Raiders cruised past Dora and Deshler to win their second straight Northwest Regional title last week
but points were a little tougher to come by when they faced St
Michael Catholic in the 4A semifinals on Tuesday
Good Hope led by 12 at one point in the fourth quarter but had to withstand a late push from the Cardinals to earn a 38-30 win and advance to the 4A State Championship Game
Good Hope Head Coach Justin Aby was proud of the way his team executed on the defensive end in the win
holding the Cardinals to just 30 points on 20.5% shooting but he knows the Raiders will have to come up with more on the offensive end if they want to take home a blue map later this week
Michael a lot of credit for that but this time of year it doesn’t have to be a pretty win its just all about advancing and at the end of the day we get to play for a state championship,” Aby said
I’m proud of these ladies and the way they competed
We’ve battled a lot of adversity and I’m glad to see them overcome it today
Any time you hold a high school team to 30 points you’re doing your job on the defensive end
I don’t know if it was nerves or what but offensively
It’s good to see when things are going hard on that end that you’re still bringing that defensive effort even when you can’t get shots to fall.”
Michael 43-33 in the win and dominating on the glass has been a point of emphasis for Aby and his staff this season
“(Sophie) had 13 rebounds which is huge for an eighth grader
so several girls really competed on the boards,” Aby said
“Something we’ve noticed as a coaching staff is that we find ourselves winning the majority of our games when we win the rebounding battle so that’s been one of our goals.”
Michael jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first few minutes of the game
but Sophie Konrad scored Good Hope’s first 5 points on the other end to give the Raiders a 5-4 lead
Ava McSwain’s first three-pointer of the night made it an 8-4 game later in the period and her next three put Good Hope in front 11-7 at the end of the first quarter
Baskets by Lexi Marshall and Jolee McHan extended the Raider lead to 15-8 midway through the second quarter
Lucie Adams sank a pair of free throws to make it a 17-11 game with 39 seconds remaining in the half and McSwain tipped one in with just 4 seconds on the clock to send Good Hope to the locker room with a 19-14 lead at the break
Konrad scored through a foul and tacked on the free throw to put the Raiders ahead 22-16 early in the third quarter
McSwain laid one in and Konrad scored another basket inside to make it 26-16 and later in the period
McSwain knocked down another three to give Good Hope a 29-18 advantage
The Cardinals were able to trim the lead to 29-22 by the end of the third quarter but a three from Konrad kept the Raiders in front 32-22 early in the fourth
Michael battled back to cut the lead to 34-30 with just over two minutes remaining
Good Hope tightened up on the defensive end and McHan and Konrad each buried a pair of free throws in the final minute of the game to secure a 38-30 win and a spot in the 4A state finals
Konrad posted a game-high 15 points and 13 rebounds in the win
McSwain added 13 points and nine rebounds and McHan finished with six points and 11 boards
With so much production missing from last year’s state title team
some may have been skeptical about this Raider team’s ability to compete for another championship
but they have continued to prove the doubters wrong with each win they collect this postseason
“Last year we graduated four senior starters
but a lot of these other girls are the ones that competed against those seniors
They made sure to work them every day at practice to try and push each other and get better so that really benefited them as well,” Aby said
“They do kind of play with a chip on their shoulder
there were a lot of people that might’ve said this team couldn’t put themselves in this spot to compete for a championship
but they found a way and now they’ll be playing for a state championship on Friday.”
wasn’t able to play during last year’s championship run due to an injury
McHan still enjoyed her experience last season but admits she’s having even more fun being on the court this time around
especially playing here since I didn’t get to last year,” McHan said
“Even though I didn’t get to play last year it was still a great experience
I still had a lot of fun but it’s just different getting to be out on the floor and play with these girls.”
The Lady Raiders will be back on the court at Legacy Arena Friday at 4 p.m
to play the winner of Plainview and Trinity Presbyterian in the 4A Girls State Championship Game
GOOD HOPE, Ala. – A Cullman County man is now facing a manslaughter charge in connection with the death of a man in Good Hope last month
Cullman County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Gregory Wayne Aycock
on a new charge in connection with the death of Anthony Mark Sturgeon
Sturgeon’s body was found at a Good Hope park on Saturday
Aycock was previously charged with first-degree hindering prosecution and corpse abuse

– The defending 4A state champion Good Hope Lady Raiders handled Dora in the Sweet 16 last week to set up another huge postseason matchup with Deshler in the Northwest Regional finals on Tuesday
The Raiders and Tigers have had several intense battles over the last few years and Tuesday’s contest was no different
Good Hope built a 12-point lead by halftime and cranked up the pressure on the defensive end in the second half
pulling away to collect a 70-50 win and punching their ticket back to the Final Four
The Raiders outrebounded the Tigers 34-24 in the game and that was an emphasis for Head Coach Justin Aby and his staff as they prepared for this matchup
“One of our assistant coaches pulled the stats from the last three times that we played Deshler and for the last three years
the team that won the rebounding battle won the game
I’m sitting here looking at the stats and tonight we won the rebounding battle,” Aby said
“It was great for Coach (Nina) Moss to bring that up and she’s been focused on it with them all week
Four Raiders scored in double figures and Aby believes they’re at their best when they play with that balance on the offensive end
Obviously with Ava (McSwain) and her career
a lot of teams are going to be focused on guarding her
but we had six players with at least seven points and that’s balance
When we’re scoring like that and attacking like that
we become an extremely hard team to guard.”
Deshler jumped out to an early lead but a basket from Ella Gossett and a pair of three-pointers from Lexi Marshall gave Good Hope an 8-6 lead later in the period
Jolee McHan scored through a foul and tacked on the free throw to make it 11-6 and Lucie Adams hit a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to 13-6 with one minute remaining in the first quarter
Marshall added one more basket before the end of the first to put the Lady Raiders in front 15-9 at the start of the second
Three-pointers from Adams and Ava McSwain made it a 21-13 game early in the second quarter and Sophie Konrad followed with a three of her own to make it 24-15
McSwain and Marshall scored off turnovers to add to the lead and Konrad scored the next five Raider points to extend the lead to 33-18 with less than three minutes to play in the first half
Adams scored the next four to make it a 37-21 game and after McSwain split a pair of free throws
Konrad sank a pair from the line in the finals seconds of the period to give Good Hope a 40-28 lead at halftime
McSwain hit a turnaround jumper and a pair of free throws early in the third quarter to keep the Raiders ahead 44-33
Gossett and Konrad each drilled a pair from the line to maintain a 48-33 lead with two minutes to play in the third and McHan laid one in with just 15 seconds on the clock to make it a 50-35 game going into the fourth
Baskets by McHan and McSwain kept Good Hope in front 54-37 early in the fourth quarter and after Gossett laid one in
Adams buried another three to make it 59-40
McSwain added a free throw and another jumper to give the Raiders a 17-point lead midway through the period and Gossett hit a pair of free throws to make it a 64-45 game
Marshall and Konrad wrapped things up at the free throw line in the final two minutes
back to back Northwest Regional Championships and a trip back to the Final Four
Four players finished in double figures for Good Hope
led by McSwain and Konrad (seven rebounds) who each posted 15 points in the win
Gossett finished with eight and McHan (seven rebounds) added seven
Sophie Konrad and Lucie Adams both earned Northwest Regional All-Tournament honors and Ava McSwain was selected as Tournament MVP
After four seniors from last year’s state championship squad graduated
this year’s team was eager to take on the challenge of defending the title
“We lost four seniors off last year’s team and all of them are playing in college now and doing extremely well for themselves
but this group almost took it as a challenge,” Aby said
and what people don’t understand is these are the same girls that went up against those seniors every single day at practice
They go to see some of the best players in the state last year and that did nothing but make them better for later on.”
Michael Catholic in the 4A state semifinals in Birmingham next Tuesday at 3 p.m
– The Good Hope Lady Raiders were back in action at the Northwest Regional Wednesday afternoon to play Dora in the Sweet 16 and for the third time in four seasons
the Lady Raiders will be playing in the Elite Eight
Good Hope jumped out to a 23-6 lead in the opening period and kept the Bulldogs at arm’s length the rest of the way to seal a 68-53 win and punch its ticket to the Northwest Regional finals
Lady Raiders Head Coach Justin Aby was happy to get the win and advance but wants to see more focus from his team on the defensive end when they hit the court again on Tuesday
obviously the most important stat to get is the W but on our end
I think there’s a lot of things we need to clean up
Just overall our energy and our effort weren’t great,” Aby said
“I felt like we didn’t get a lot of the 50/50 balls tonight so at this point of the year
our effort and our intensity is going to have to be better in order for us to keep playing basketball.”
Good Hope started out the game red-hot on both sides of the court
Ava McSwain and Jolee McHan each knocked down a short jumper to give the Lady Raiders an early 4-0 lead
McSwain drilled a three from the left wing
then Sophie Konrad laid it in to extend their lead to 9-0
Lexi Marshall scored five straight points to put Good Hope ahead
and Ella Gossett drained a trey from the right wing to give the Lady Raiders a 21-5 lead late in the first quarter
Konrad put in another basket on their final possession of the first quarter
and Good Hope would go into the second quarter up
Lucie Adams hit a pair of baskets to give the Lady Raiders a 27-8 lead early in the second
A pair of three-point plays by Dora cut it to 27-14 with a little over five minutes to go in the first half
then McSwain added a three from the left wing to make it a 32-17 game
A 6-1 run by the Lady Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 33-23 late in the first half
Gossett and Marshall each knocked down a three to give Good Hope a 39-23 lead
but a late three-point play by Dora cut it to 39-27 at the break
The scoring slowed down some in the third quarter
A rebound and putback by the Lady Bulldogs made it a 41-31 game almost midway through the third
then Gossett added a basket down low to put Good Hope ahead
then Marshall laid it in before the buzzer to extend their lead to 52-35 at the start of the fourth quarter
then she later added a three from the right wing to give the Lady Raiders a 57-38 lead early in the final period
Adams’ three-point play made it a 60-40 game
Five quick points by the Lady Bulldogs cut it to 60-45
but McSwain scored five quick points of her own to extend Good Hope’s lead to 65-47
and Gossett added a late free throw to put the finishing touches on a 68-53 win for the Lady Raiders
McSwain finished with 22 points for Good Hope
and Marshall posted 12 points and five assists in the win
McHan recorded five points and a game-high nine rebounds as well
The Lady Raiders will be back on the court Tuesday afternoon to play either Deshler or Cordova in the Elite Eight

Michael Catholic in the Class 4A Semifinals on Tuesday
Good Hope was back on the court at Legacy Arena to defend its state title against Trinity Presbyterian in the finals Friday night
the Wildcats got off to a fast start and led Good Hope wire to wire on their way to a 67-27 win and the 4A state title
Raiders Head Coach Justin Aby had a lot of people to thank for helping guide Good Hope to another outstanding season
He knows his team didn’t play its best game on Friday but credits Trinity for generating a lot of that adversity
We won this thing by 30 last year and today we came up short and lost by 40 so he’s great in the good times and the bad
I want to give a shoutout to my assistant coaches
I think they’re some of the best in the state
Coach Moss and Coach Taylor do a great job with their program
and I better go ahead and mention my wife too
I think every coach’s spouse is the real MVP just knowing how much time coaches spend with their teams,” Aby said
I think Trinity could compete in any classification here at the finals
I don’t think today was our best performance and we fell short but that’s part of basketball and part of life
I don’t think that takes anything away from us
and we played some of the top teams in the state and other states
Aby reflected on what this team has accomplished this season and the legacy that this year’s seniors are leaving behind
These seniors were part of something special last year
bringing our school its first state championship ever in any sport and after we graduated so many young ladies
for them to be able to bring their teammates back to this spot,” Aby said
“To say I’m proud of them would be an understatement
You all see great basketball players and I see that as well
but I see even better people out of these girls so I’m extremely proud of them and I know they’re going to do great things in life.”
Baskets by Ava McSwain and Lexi Marshall held Trinity’s lead to 5-4 early in the first quarter and after the Wildcats used a 7-0 run to pull ahead 12-4
McSwain knocked down a three to trim the lead to 12-7
McSwain’s next basket made it a 15-9 game later in the period
but Trinity dominated the rest of the first
extending its lead to 28-9 by the start of the second
The Wildcats continued to dominate on the defensive end in the second quarter
keeping the Raiders off the scoreboard for the duration of the period and taking a commanding
46-9 lead into the locker room at halftime
McSwain hit a pair of free throws early in the third quarter to make it a 49-11 game and Lucie Adams buried a three later in the period to make it 52-14
Baskets by Ella Gossett and Jolee McHan cut the lead down to 54-18 with less than two minutes remaining in the third and Adams banked in another three just before the buzzer to make it a 57-21 game going into the fourth
McSwain scored six more points in the fourth quarter
but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit and Good Hope’s season came to an end with a 67-27 loss in 4A State Championship Game
McSwain (five rebounds) led the Lady Raiders with 15 points in the loss
Gossett and McHan (six rebounds) each posted 2
Ava McSwain and Jolee McHan each earned All-State Tournament Team honors
After losing four of their five starters to graduation in May
some doubted whether or not the Raiders would be able to put together another deep postseason run and seniors McSwain and McHan were proud to prove them wrong
Nobody thought we would get back here and I just want to thank God for helping us get back here,” McSwain said
I’m not going to let this game beat us up because basketball doesn’t define me and we’re going to move on and trust God and it’s going to be ok.”
“At the beginning of the year I had several people come up to me and tell me that we would not ever make it back this year
That we would not be able to get here because of how many seniors we lost,” McHan said
“That drove us all together and we had one goal in mind and that was to make it back here
but we still did really good this season and I’m super proud of everybody.”

Michael in Tuesday’s Class 4A state semifinal at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena in Birmingham
Michael a lot of credit for that,” Good Hope coach Justin Aby said
we get to play for a state championship and proud of these ladies and the way they competed.”
Sophie Konrad splashed home a triple to open the fourth quarter
and the Raiders held a 34-22 lead with 6:23 remaining in the game
Michael (23-2) then held the Raiders to a 5:38 scoring drought and used an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 34-30 with 1:33 left
“We started to see it slipping away from our hands and realized how bad we wanted it,” St
“That’s when we started getting our rebounds up and it came down to who wanted it more.”
McHan and Konrad were both fouled in the final minute and went 4-of-4 at the foul line to secure the semifinal win and advance the Raiders to a second straight championship game
Good Hope (27-5) did not score until the 4:51 mark of the opening period
but a layup from Konrad sparked an 8-0 run that was capped on a 3-pointer by Ava McSwain
Michael’s Molly McDonald answered with her own triple and McSwain nailed her second 3-pointer for an 11-7 lead at the end of the quarter
The Raiders were able to stretch the lead to as many as 6 points in the first half as they held St
Michael to a 1-of-7 showing on field goals in the second period
McDonald was fouled before the buzzer and converted 1-of-2 free throws to cut the Good Hope advantage to 19-14 at the halftime break
McDonald cut the lead to 3 points on a pair of free throws in the second minute of the third period
but the Raiders went on a 7-0 run – jumpstarted on a Konrad layup plus a free throw – that blossomed into a 10-2 surge on a 3-pointer from McSwain
The eighth-grader posted a double-double with a game-high 15 points and 13 rebounds
We know we’re not the biggest but we went out there and won the battle,” she said
Stat sheet: Good Hope – McSwain finished with 13 points
Michael – McDonald had a team-high 12 points
and Samantha Kokoszka finished with 7 points
By the numbers: Good Hope shot 25 percent overall and 8-of-10 at the foul line
Michael was held to 20.5 percent from the field
but forced 18 turnovers that resulted in 11 points
Good Hope advanced to its second straight title game and seek to repeat as 4A champions
Michael made its first state tournament appearance in only its eighth season as a program
Coachspeak: “Last year we graduated four starters – four seniors – and a lot of these other girls made sure they worked every day and pushed one another
a lot of people could say there was no way this team coming up would put themselves in a spot to compete for a championship
This is probably one of my favorite groups that I’ve ever had and one of our favorite seasons

The Suez Canal is both a maritime choke point and a vital waterway for global trade and energy security
The 193-kilometer canal connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean:
Given its strategic role as the fastest sea route between Asia and Europe
any disruption to the Suez Canal can have outsized impacts on global commerce and energy markets
Minimizing such disruption is an international concern
It requires diplomacy and collaboration to bolster Suez area security and capacity building to protect trade flows and supply chains
The canal’s strategic importance has repeatedly made it a flash point during geopolitical conflicts. In late 1956, after Egypt’s President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the canal
during which the canal was closed from October 1956 until March 1957
Though the closure lasted only about five months
it disrupted shipping significantly; hundreds of vessels were forced to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope
The crisis underscored the canal’s leverage in Cold War geopolitics and ended with Egypt retaining control
but only after international pressure forced invading forces to withdraw
firing rockets in an effort to disrupt traffic
No damage was done and transits continued uninterrupted—but the incident highlighted persistent security concerns
historical episodes show that geopolitical conflicts can rapidly threaten the Suez Canal’s operability
leading to costly rerouting of ships and prompting defensive measures to safeguard this vital corridor
dramatically underscoring the threat to shipping
leading the Suez Canal Authority to urge shipping lines to return to their normal routes amid signs of stabilizing conditions
no new attacks had been reported for several weeks
but these episodes served as a stark reminder of how quickly a regional conflict can threaten the security of a global trade artery
down from a normal level of seventy or more in prior months
Such a sharp decline in Red Sea traffic implies a significant temporary loss of global shipping capacity
as a large share of the world’s container and bulk fleet was pushed onto longer routes
they can put upward pressure on inflation in affected economies due to costlier imports and shipping delays
faced both longer lead times and surcharges on freight in late 2023
complicating inventory management and production schedules
requiring shippers to seek specialized coverage or government guarantees
The net effect was sharply increased operating costs for any ships brave enough to continue through the canal during the hostilities
highlighting a climate impact alongside economic costs
The recent disruptions underscore that the Suez Canal’s strategic vulnerability is an international concern
Stability in the waterways connecting to the canal (e.g.
and the Eastern Mediterranean) is critical for uninterrupted commerce
A key policy lesson is the importance of proactive security and diplomatic measures to protect this choke point
Egypt already maintains a robust military presence to secure the canal itself
but the Red Sea attacks revealed the need for a broader cooperative security framework—potentially involving regional states and global naval powers—to ensure safe passage in surrounding seas
multinational maritime patrols or convoy arrangements in the Red Sea could be considered during periods of high risk (such as past anti-piracy operations or the tanker convoys in the Persian Gulf during the 1980s)
provide a legal foundation for international collaboration in maritime security efforts
and coordinate response mechanisms to maritime insecurity
Other maritime routes are emerging, but they remain insufficient. Climate change is gradually opening the Northern Sea Route (NSR) along the Russian Arctic
which raises the prospect of an Asia-Europe sea route that circumvents the Suez Canal
Arctic routes are not yet commercially viable for mainstream shipping: seasonal ice
and a lack of infrastructure pose significant challenges
the NSR will remain a limited-use route for specific ships and seasons
rather than a full alternative to the Suez Canal
Meanwhile, the Cape of Good Hope route will continue to be the primary backup when the Suez is impassable, despite its longer distance. This reality was underscored during the Red Sea crisis. When faced with danger, the shipping industry’s only immediate large-scale alternative was essentially to go around Africa
that solution carries significant economic
reinforcing why maintaining the Suez’s accessibility is so crucial
International cooperation in maritime security can also extend to technological advancements
Countries can work together to develop and deploy surveillance systems
and advanced communication networks to monitor shipping activities effectively
the Automatic Identification System (AIS) allows vessels to broadcast their location in real time
helping authorities to track maritime traffic and respond to security threats proactively
Joint investments in such technologies can enhance situational awareness and risk assessment
ensuring swift and effective responses to potential emergencies
Investment in international training programs for naval forces and coast guards can further bolster maritime security
Collaborative efforts such as joint exercises
and exchange programs can equip personnel with the skills and knowledge needed to respond effectively to maritime challenges
the US Navy’s Partnership for Peace Program promotes military-to-military cooperation and training among countries
enhancing their ability to manage maritime responsibilities and contingencies
This collaborative effort can be further developed
Policymakers and industry leaders will need to collaboratively safeguard the Suez Canal’s continuity
through security cooperation and contingency planning
to ensure that geopolitical conflicts do not again choke off one of the world’s most important trade arteries
The recent disruptions serve as a call to action to reinforce the resilience of global supply chains against such shocks
and significant potential for cost-effective green hydrogen production give the country a competitive edge
The Middle East and North Africa region is well placed to become not just a major source of renewable energy
but also a central and indispensable player in the global energy transition
uniquely able to balance supply and demand for all types of energy
and neighboring countries need a permanent ceasefire
billions of dollars in infrastructure damaged
the Middle East also urgently needs a solid reconstruction plan
Image: The "Ever Given" container ship operated by the Evergreen Marine Corporation
sails with tugboats through the Suez Canal
Egypt's Suez Canal Authority announced that the stranded massive container ship that has blocked the Suez Canal for nearly a week
has been fully dislodged and successfully floating in the canal
