Goodyear to rollout new specification of slick tire for LMP2 class ahead of 4 Hours of Le Castellet…
Goodyear will introduce a new slick tire compound for the LMP2 category at this weekend’s 4 Hours of Le Castellet
the second round of the European Le Mans Series season
The American manufacturer has been the exclusive tire supplier for the championship’s LMP2 class since 2021
with all 21 Oreca 07 Gibsons on this year’s ELMS field running on Goodyear Eagles
which has been developed with a goal to further improve performance and durability for drivers across race stints
will also be used in next month’s 24 Hours of Le Mans
“This new specification is an evolution of our existing slick LMP2 compound,” said Joao Coelho
Goodyear’s Testing & Track Support Manager
“It has undergone extensive testing in close collaboration with several LMP2 teams
“Their input has been very valuable in helping us fine-tune the construction to suit the specific demands of endurance racing
“That partnership has allowed us to introduce a tire that delivers even higher standards of performance
and maintains the reliability needed for endurance races as gruelling as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.”
The introduction of Goodyear’s new tire comes against the background of the ongoing tender process to find suppliers for both chassis as well as powertrain for the next generation of LMP2 machinery that will debut in 2028
LMGT3 cars in ELMS will continue to make use of Goodyear’s Eagle Medium compound this season

AKRON, Ohio, Jan. 7, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NASDAQ: GT)
has announced a significant advancement to vehicle safety systems
The integration of tire intelligence technology into the automatic emergency braking (AEB) system of a vehicle has demonstrated the potential to mitigate crashes
particularly in challenging road conditions
Building on the success of Goodyear's and TNO's integration of tire intelligence into antilock braking systems (ABS) showcased at CES 2024
this project further underscores the role of tire data in advancing automotive safety systems
The AEB system, designed to help prevent or reduce the severity of collisions by automatically applying the brakes when a crash is imminent, has become a key focus in the automotive industry. While existing systems are typically tuned for high-friction surfaces like dry asphalt, integrating Goodyear SightLine
the company's suite of tire intelligence solutions
can help the AEB system function effectively across a wider range of driving environments
including low-friction surfaces such as wet roads or ice
tire intelligence can provide the AEB with deeper insights into actual tire and road conditions to enable smarter
AEB systems will play a critical role in automated driving
helping to provide a comprehensive safety solution at all times."
Recent wet road testing indicates that an enhanced AEB system incorporating Goodyear SightLine technology has the potential to assist in mitigating impacts at speeds of up to 80 kph (50 mph) by engaging braking earlier
the integration of AEB with SightLine insights on tire and road condition data helps ensure robust performance across diverse scenarios
"TNO is dedicated to enhancing the safety
efficiency and sustainability of vehicles," said Martijn Stamm
"Our collaboration with Goodyear aims to predict the braking distance of a vehicle in more conditions
and trigger the AEB timely to reduce accidents and ultimately safe lives
This knowledge is a key enabler for a safe introduction of higher levels of automation."
This breakthrough positions Goodyear and its partners as leaders in delivering advanced safety solutions to meet and exceed regulatory requirements
As major OEMs and tier-1 suppliers prepare for the 2029 AEB mandate
the SightLine integration can offer a competitive edge in the race to build safer

It's a sparkling afternoon and the Goodyear Blimp is cruising above the southern shoreline of Los Angeles
a few miles from its base in the suburb of Carson
is a little under the size of a school bus and has a gobsmacking
Dolphins bounce over waves and seals flop off a floating dock below
There's no door separating the cockpit from the rest of the craft
the "Weight On Wheels" switch (it turns on the transponder allowing air traffic control to track the blimp in flight) is fittingly labeled "WOW."
The Goodyear Blimp has been wowing people for a century
though it's changed quite a bit since Goodyear's first branded blimp
started bobbing gracefully across American skies in 1925
Today's Goodyear blimps — the company has a trio of the airships spread across Ohio
California and Florida — are still helium-filled
But they have a semi-rigid frame which supports structures like their tail fins and engines
Though other companies built airships as far back as the late 19th century for both military and commercial uses
Goodyear's blimps became some of the most famous when they debuted
"All of a sudden, these blimps began appearing all over the United States over parades, during holidays and major events," said John Geoghegan, the author of When Giants Ruled the Sky
"This is how they captured the imagination of the public."
Goeghegan said a string of headline-grabbing publicity stunts also helped bring the Goodyear Blimp into the public sphere
such as the day in 1928 when one landed on the roof of a department store in Akron
"And of course that photograph ran in newspapers all across the United States," Geoghegan said
Soon there were airship toys, airship postage stamps, and airship songs. Early films captured the luxury of long-distance travel by Zeppelin — German craft
which were much bigger than blimps and had a rigid frame
They also used a more readily available — and more flammable — gas
The public's carefree fascination with airships dimmed in the 1930s after deadly accidents started making headlines
was finishing up a transatlantic flight in New Jersey in 1937
But as it gracefully floated down to the ground
The entire shocking spectacle was captured by the mass media of the day
"People saw this enormous tragedy happening kind of right before their eyes in the newsreels in theaters and on radio," said National Air and Space Museum Curator Emeritus Tom Crouch
The Hindenburg disaster meant that the glamorous era of commercial passenger travel on airships was over
But blimps and other airships continued to hover on the edges of the public imagination in movies
The Goodyear Blimp had long been used as a giant advertisement for the company
working to get the brand in front of as many ordinary
because it's a big billboard for Goodyear," said Goodyear spokesperson Dan Smith
The blimp has also become an integral part of live TV sports coverage beginning in the 1950s
The airships provided a groundbreaking aerial platform for the coverage of the Super Bowl and the World Series
Hollywood took note: The blimp was pivotal to the climax of the 1977 thriller Black Sunday
a terrorist group attempts to blow up a Goodyear blimp as it hovers over the Super Bowl
Blimps still occasionally show up in the culture — though now they are often steeped in nostalgia for the days when airships ruled American skies, such as with the 2023 steam-punky Airship: Kingdoms Adrift video game
There are are also a handful of blimps that are leased by companies around the country for advertising or surveillance. But some other familiar blimps — like the MetLife blimp — have faded away. There's a worldwide shortage of helium
Yet there have been signs that airships might make a comeback. In the past couple of years, companies in the U.S. and around the world such as Lighter Than Air Research
have announced plans to launch a new generation of commercial airships
As for the Goodyear blimp — its footprint isn't what it once was. The company's airships helped cover more than 120 live events in 2014. In 2024, they covered fewer than 70. But Goodyear's Smith says the company plans to up its presence for its centennial year
"You're going to be hard pressed to not find the Goodyear Blimp somewhere near you this year," he said
The blimp is also attracting a new generation of fans — largely through social media. It has nearly 140,000 followers on Instagram
" It's always fun to see the blimp flying around," said Madison Opdahl
who recently got to take a ride in the blimp in honor of its 100th anniversary with her college buddy Niklas Tostar
"We send photos of the blimp whenever we see it to each other," Tostar said
"We'll be at work or wherever the situation is
and it's just kind of a running inside joke
but also at the same time a little bit serious that we like the blimp so much."

Goodyear is debuting a new slick tyre specification for European Le Mans Series’ LMP2 teams at this weekend’s 4 Hours of Le Castellet
The new specification has been developed to improve both tyre performance and durability across race stints
It builds on the foundation of Goodyear’s existing compound and will be used for the remainder of the 2025 campaign as well as the Le Mans 24 Hours next month
“This new specification is an evolution of our existing slick LMP2 compound,” João Coelho
Their input has been very valuable in helping us fine-tune the construction to suit the specific demands of endurance racing
The new specification arrives after the current set of LMP2 regulations was renewed in preparation for the next generation of cars set to debut in 2028
Coelho adds: “We have a mixture of Platinum
Silver and Bronze-rated drivers competing in LMP2
so it’s essential the slick tire offers drivability
and remains trusted to race on by an array of drivers with a range of driving styles
That’s a key focus for both our LMP2 and LMGT3 products.”
Teams competing in the ELMS LMGT3 category
will continue to run the latest specification of Goodyear’s ‘Eagle Medium’ slick compound this season

CEO and President Mark Stewart said Goodyear will be introducing five new power lines to markets around the world
and will be adding nearly 200 SKUs “in the high end
highly profitable segments of the market that are going to generate the returns and greater value for us at a premium price.”
The new products will include updates in the WeatherReady
Wrangler and ultra-high performance Eagle product lines
Those additions are helping the tiremaker build confidence for the second half of 2025
“as these all are coming into the marketplace at volume and the right number of SKUs.”
Goodyear plans to modernize and add capacity to build more premium tires at its Lawton
“The modernization project will add about 10 million units of new capacity for premium tires in ’25 and ’26
We will ensure we’re running at the optimal level of output and efficiency.”
Asked if that project was in response to existing tariffs
or the potential of additional tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on products made in Mexico and Canada
“we would like to tell you our crystal ball was good enough to do that,” but that wasn’t the case
Stewart said it’s instead a necessary investment that’s needed “across our footprint
We’re taking all the right actions we needed to take there in terms of moving more into the higher rim sizes (and build) additional volume for the marketplace in that higher profit

Matteo Anello and Henry Saenz have lived near the Goodyear chemical plant for decades without knowledge of the carcinogens emitted from the plant
Toxic pollution from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co
chemical plant in Niagara Falls may be far worse than the state has previously suggested
according to a new analysis by a former lawyer for unionized workers at the facility
which uses Goodyear’s data that it supplied to the state and Environmental Protection Agency
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation approved the plan in February from the tire maker to reduce emissions of ortho-toluidine
The analysis by Steven Wodka measures something called “fugitive emissions,” which is pollution that comes from the plant’s leaky valves and other problems that may prevent harmful gases from leaving the plant via its smokestacks
and combines it with the emissions leaving the plant’s stacks
the total pollution the company is sending into its surrounding neighborhood may be more than 400 times higher than what the state considers “safe.”
This makes the situation at Goodyear a potential public health crisis
Wodka wrote in a letter to the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation
the DEC repeated its earlier declaration that there is “no imminent public health risk to the community from Goodyear’s emissions,” the agency wrote in an email to The Buffalo News
Ortho-toluidine is an organic chemical used to make hair dyes
Goodyear uses the compound to create an anti-cracking solution for rubber tires
Exposure to ortho-toluidine is known to cause bladder cancer
irritate people’s eyes and skin and can lead to anemia
as well as serious conditions that come from lowered blood-oxygen levels
The chemical can also cause skin lesions and central nervous system issues that include dizziness
according to the National Institutes of Health
chemical plant operates across the street from a Niagara Falls neighborhood that is exposed to toxic emissions
“The State of New York has a moral obligation
to inform the hundreds of families that live within the areas impacted by the real world current combination of both stack and fugitive emissions
and the parents of the children who attend the Cataract Elementary School
that their health is at risk from the emissions from the nearby Goodyear plant,” Wodka wrote in an April 8 letter to DEC Region 9 Director Julie Barrett O’Neill
The Goodyear plant is home to one of the worst-known outbreaks of occupational cancer in the nation due to ortho-toluidine
At least 78 workers have been diagnosed with bladder cancer since the 1980s
Goodyear repeated DEC statements that the public was not at risk from ortho-toluidine emissions
the health and safety of our associates and the communities in which we work is our top priority,” a spokesperson wrote
“The DEC and New York State health authorities have publicly stated that historical emission limits are ‘currently protective of the surrounding community’s air quality’ and ‘there is no risk to the community’ based on their modeling.”
The state had previously estimated up to 0.14 micrograms per cubic meter of ortho-toluidine could be emitted from the plant over Niagara Falls neighborhoods
DEC guidelines suggest limiting emissions of the chemical to 0.02 micrograms per cubic meter because it is a potent carcinogen known to cause bladder cancer and other detrimental health effects
shows the possible extent of carcinogenic ortho-toluidine emissions coming from the Goodyear chemical plant in Niagara Falls
But Wodka’s analysis points out that the DEC is only counting the pollution coming from the company’s smokestacks
Far more pollution leaks out of the plant than what is measured from the stacks
Putting the stacks numbers together with the fugitive emissions
Wodka calculated that up to 8.89 micrograms per cubic meter of ortho-toluidine could be flowing into the air from the Goodyear plant
Environmental Protection Agency air pollution dispersion program (AERMOD) and shows three large
irregular-shaped circles around the Goodyear Plant where the ortho-toluidine is likely to be polluting the air
He added pollution data into the program from stack testing done at Goodyear in 2022 and fugitive emissions data the company submitted to the EPA in 2023
the company could take interim steps to curb the amount of ortho-toluidine it emits as soon as this spring
with permanent measures to be installed by late 2026
His map had similar results to EPA models that also combine stack and fugitive emissions
both with the global nonprofit organization Environmental Defense Fund
It’s likely the slight differences between Wodka’s model and EPA’s were due to different meteorological data and pollution release heights being input
The outermost circle stretches from near the intersection of Niagara Street and Hyde Park Boulevard south along Buffalo Avenue
Niagara Community Center and Cataract Elementary School and reaches north over Niagara Falls Boulevard and the landfill along Packard Road
Wodka’s analysis shows there could be concentrations of ortho-toluidine of up to 0.02 micrograms per cubic meter – right at the state’s health guideline limit
Two additional circles show the neighborhood closest to the Goodyear plant could be subjected to concentrations of the chemical of 0.1 to at least 0.2 micrograms per cubic meter – up to 10 times more – according to Wodka’s analysis
Wodka’s modeled concentrations of ortho-toluidine far exceeded that of the state’s analysis because he included both the fugitive emissions coming from the plant as well as the stack emissions
Fugitive emissions come from leaks in valves
while stack emissions are specially piped through pollution reduction equipment and come from what can look like chimneys extending from the roof of the plant
The state has only measured emissions coming from Goodyear’s stacks
created by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in September
shows how much ortho-toluidine Goodyear is emitting in Niagara Falls
The state’s limit for ortho-toluidine is 0.02 micrograms per cubic meter – this map shows Goodyear polluting up to 0.14 micrograms per cubic meter
About 133 pounds of ortho-toluidine were emitted from Goodyear’s stacks in 2023
while 1,211 pounds were emitted through fugitive sources the same year
according to data that Goodyear itself reported to the EPA
It makes no sense DEC only measured stack emissions from Goodyear
because those emissions are carefully pushed through pipes high into the air so when they reach humans they are more diluted
Fugitive emissions are typically released from plants at or near ground level
“The most concerning emissions from my perspective
to workers and people who live around the fence line
In January, the state ordered Goodyear to reduce its stack emissions of ortho-toluidine. Temporary pollution control measures were set to be in place by April 10
while permanent controls must be in place by Oct
The temporary pollution control measures were expected to reduce ortho-toluidine stack emissions to 0.047 micrograms per cubic meter, still more than twice the state’s health guideline of 0.02 micrograms per cubic meter, according to an emissions control plan submitted by Goodyear to the DEC in late January
the state allows facilities “wiggle room” to pollute up to 10 times above its health guidelines as long as the best available pollution control measures are in place
officials told The Buffalo News in January
the DEC claimed the 1,211 pounds of fugitive emissions reported by Goodyear to the EPA are “grossly overestimated.”
It further explained that the fugitive emissions data should be used as a tool “to determine if a company requires further evaluation based on conservative estimates of potential releases from a facility.”
Wodka thinks it would be far-fetched for Goodyear to admit it was emitting 1,211 pounds of fugitive ortho-toluidine into a Niagara Falls neighborhood unless those leaks were actually happening
an activist with the grassroots environmental organization Don’t Waste NY who has been fighting against the ortho-toluidine pollution from Goodyear
was similarly aghast at the concept of Goodyear reporting more carcinogenic pollution from its plant than what was actually occurring
“Why would Goodyear overestimate their leaking valves?” she asked
Houses on Girard Avenue across from the Goodyear plant
Residents of the area are rallying in hopes that Goodyear will be a less-polluting neighbor
Rabe and other community activists are demanding the DEC order Goodyear to conduct testing on its stack emissions to check whether the interim pollution control measures installed are actually working
The coalition is also calling for DEC to require Goodyear rein in the fugitive emissions of ortho-toluidine to protect the community
president of the NAACP Niagara Falls Branch
said DEC is harming a community by not taking stronger action to require Goodyear reduce ortho-toluidine emissions
“Why won’t they do what’s in the best interest of the community?” Kimble
“This is an injustice to the entire city of Niagara Falls.”

The workforce reduction is part of the tire manufacturer’s plan to repurpose the Danville facility
focusing on rubber mixing and aviation tire production
The upcoming layoffs include associates and contracted positions
A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act has not been filed or posted and Goodyear did not say when it will begin the job cuts
The tire and rubber maker announced plans early last month to repurpose the Danville facility, moving most of the production to its other manufacturing plants, the Chatham Star Tribune reported
The Danville facility was established in November 1966, employing over 2,000 workers and producing commercial and aviation tires, according to a 2016 post on the city’s website. About 1,850 employees are represented by United Steel Workers Local 831, according to the union’s website
The local reached an agreement with Goodyear regarding the company’s production and workforce reduction
“We will continue to look for opportunities to deliver beyond our updated targets as well
the goal remains the same — deliver increased value to our customers and our shareholders
We still have much work to do in the face of industry headwinds.”
Other actions of the transformation plan include pursuing strategic alternatives for the company’s chemical and off-the-road equipment tire businesses and the Dunlop brand
The company closed on its $905 million sale of its off-the-road tire business to The Yokohama Rubber Co. on Feb. 3. Last month, Goodyear announced an agreement to sell the Dunlop brand to Sumitomo Rubber Industries for approximately $701 million

“Frank” Seiberling traveled to Chicago on business and came away as the owner of two empty factories on Market Street in Akron
The 38-year-old had no idea how he would use them
“Charley” Seiberling soon began making rubber products
poker chips and carriage and bicycle tires
Little did the brothers know that the coming adoption of the automobile would lead to their start-up company becoming a powerful global brand
The Seiberlings were inspired by the spirit of discovery embodied by chemist
Goodyear discovered that when a mixture of “gum elastic” – natural rubber – and sulfur were exposed to heat
This process was subsequently called “vulcanization” and opened the door to the manufacture of rubber products such as tires
In addition to Akron being the home of the Seiberling brothers
the manufacturing town of 50,000 was already base of other rubber companies in 1898
It had a reliable workforce already in place and was located near the Little Cuyahoga River and the B&O Railroad line
which would make for convenient shipping of materials
which eventually became known as the “Rubber Capital of the World.”
Early automobile tires were difficult to both mount and remove from a wheel
Goodyear introduced its solution – a straight-sided tire that didn’t have to curve inward to stay attached to the rim
was easily removed for maintenance and offered a more comfortable ride
The breakthrough tire was a critical product for Goodyear
the fledgling automobile and the future of transportation
Drivers around the world have come to trust Goodyear tires for their quality
The company’s commitment to earning the trust of drivers everywhere comes through in its other brands as well
Goodyear makes and sells tires under the Sava

retirees and others who were not on active duty
Goodyear’s aviation division built the nimble Corsair aircraft as well as engines and guidance systems
Goodyear and other tire companies collaborated on the rapid development of synthetic rubber
which became a critical component of product beyond tires in the decades that followed
Goodyear’s scientists were responsible for the development of satellites

SEC Rules In Favor of Shareholder Proposal at Goodyear on Tire Wear Shedding Reduction
The proposal urges Goodyear to reduce microplastic pollution from its tires
MEDIA CONTACT: Ryon Harms, [email protected]
EL CERRITO, CA—March 7, 2025—The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has determined that shareholder representative As You Sow’s shareholder proposal with Goodyear Tire
The SEC’s ruling will give all shareholders the opportunity to vote on the proposal at the Company’s annual general meeting in Q2 2025
“The science is clear - automobile tires are a growing source of toxic microplastic pollution that harms ecosystems and fish
and may pose danger to human health,” said Conrad MacKerron
“Investors have the right to know how Goodyear is addressing these risks and whether the Company is taking meaningful action to mitigate its environmental impact.”
Tire wear particles are a major contributor to global microplastic pollution, accounting for an estimated 78% of microplastic leakage into oceans. Each year, six million tons of these particles—which contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals—are released globally
Studies indicate that tire wear emissions not only pollute waterways through road runoff but also become airborne
where they can be inhaled and pose serious human health risks
New European Commission emissions standards (Euro 7)
will be the first to regulate tire emissions
there’s no certainty that the company would apply those or similar standards beyond the European market
The SEC’s decision reinforces the importance of shareholder engagement on environmental and social issues of material importance
This is the first proposal related to the harms of tire shedding and builds on As You Sow’ s long-standing work to reduce corporate plastic pollution

The outsole on these boots is made of thermoplastic rubber with a tire tread-inspired lug—it’s still a Goodyear product
The upper is more standard breathable nylon that covers the high-cut
fully padded shaft and has heel tabs that make it easier to take these off and put them on
The styling is fairly standard hiking boot
except for a tiny Goodyear tag on the outside ankle
We wouldn’t necessarily call these a replacement for boots from core outdoor brands built to ascend Mount Whitney
but it’s clear from the reviews that they’ve delighted many a Walmart shopper
One wrote that they have “worn a hiking boot every day for the last 30 years” and tried many different brands
The Goodyear Teton is the “best boot I have ever worn,” a bold statement that they go on to back up
and true to size,” and while “everybody thinks good boots have to be expensive,” they conclude
Another reviewer says they use these boots to hike in the nearby Blue Ridge mountains all the time
and are great for rock impact.” Where a compromise was made in their mind was with waterproofing
“Their waterproofing is fine,” they wrote
“but I wouldn’t wade through streams with them.” There are plenty of more expensive
so this comes off as more of a plain statement than a criticism
