Before technology opened doors for Alana Ward Robinson
she will return to the place where her path first took shape—Grambling State University—to receive an honorary doctorate during the Spring 2025 Commencement
One of the few African American women in America to have served as a Chief Information Officer for multiple Fortune 500 companies
Robinson’s story is not just one of professional excellence—it’s a testament to purpose
in a household where education wasn’t just encouraged—it was expected
taught junior and senior English literature
they were prominent educators and leaders in their community
“They taught me that education was both a privilege and a calling—a tool not only for personal growth
“They instilled in me values that have remained my compass to this day: faith in God
and an unshakable belief in the power of being a life-long learner.”
I gravitated toward math and science classes because they offered a sense of order and discovery,” she recalls
Her curiosity found direction thanks to a high school math teacher who recognized her potential
“I had a high school math teacher who encouraged me to pursue more advanced studies and who saw in me a future that I hadn’t yet imagined
That teacher went on to nominate her for an Early Admissions program at the University of Southwest Louisiana during the summer of her junior year
“That was my 1st Computer programming course
I was instantly hooked—and that was the moment I realized technology could be my future!”
Robinson enrolled at Grambling State University the following year
as the institution introduced a dual degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science
“It wasn’t lost on me that I didn’t see many people who looked like me in those workspaces,” she says
Grambling became a place of personal transformation as well as academic growth
Robinson fondly recalls late nights in Adams Hall dorm
and the friendships that turned into lifelong family-by-choice relationships
She describes being initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority
and being elected Delta Iota Chapter President as a defining moment that taught her the power of sisterhood
Perhaps most meaningful of all was meeting her husband
The two graduated together in 1972 and married that same year
has navigated life’s challenges and opportunities with a steadfast commitment to grow and serve
Robinson also credits several influential faculty members with helping shape her academic direction and professional future
“I had professors who saw me—who pushed me to go beyond what was expected
Their belief in my potential was transformative,” she shares
“I continue to have profound gratitude to Dr
who expected me to better than the day before
They wholeheartedly made my exposure to IBM happen.”
“I also had classmates who were fiercely intelligent
and driven—we inspired each other to dream big
The sense of community and collective pride remains significant and continues to exist.”
Robinson rose through executive ranks at IBM
and RR Donnelley—frequently the only Black woman in the room
and often the one leading the conversation
She drove multimillion-dollar operational efficiencies
and built leadership teams that reflected her core values: excellence
“There are many proud moments over the course of my corporate and entrepreneurial career,” she says
“That’s the kind of legacy I’m proud of—one built not only on transformation and innovation
which leads national work in CIO consulting
and technology strategy across sectors from healthcare to higher education
“I am exceptionally proud of the company we have built
and the capacity we have created to drive focused impact.”
or redirect you—but your authenticity is your superpower
Returning to Grambling State this spring to receive its highest honor is
a moment that is both professional and deeply personal
“It’s a full circle blessing that I will treasure forever,” she says
“To be honored by Grambling—my alma mater—is deeply emotional
And to receive the first honorary doctorate bestowed by President Lemelle
a man I’ve watched grow into an impactful and visionary leader
Robinson now stands before a new generation preparing to take their next step
Her closing words to the graduating class speak to what she has always believed—about herself
and about those who follow her path:“You are ready
The degree you’ve earned is not just a credential—it’s a passport to possibility
and never forget the village that shaped you

Patrick Crarey II is turning the page to a new chapter of his coaching career
After spending one year as the head coach of the Florida A&M men’s basketball team
Crarey is heading to fellow Southwestern Athletic Conference school Grambling State in Louisiana
Crarey, 41, replaces former Grambling men’s basketball coach Donte Jackson
Grambling State went 12-22 this past season but won its first-ever SWAC Tournament title in 2024 to reach the NCAA Tournament
“I enjoyed my time here seeing the program grow so fast in such a short amount of time,” Crarey told the Tallahassee Democrat in a one-on-one interview on Tuesday
but God and business told me I had to go.”
Crarey was hired away from NAIA school St. Thomas University to become the Rattlers’ 15th men’s basketball coach on April 17, 2024
by former FAMU Vice President and Director of Athletics Tiffani-Dawn Sykes and former university President Dr
native’s first NCAA and Division I coaching job
After an administration shakeup last August
Crarey worked with FAMU interim president Dr
Timothy Beard and first-year FAMU Vice President and Director of Athletics Angela Suggs
“Very grateful for the Presidents I had while I was here; Tiffani and Angela have done so much for me since I’ve been here,” Crarey said
The two-month-long contract dispute between FAMU’s Board of Trustees and the athletic department stuck with Crarey while deciding if he would stay with the Rattlers or accept the Grambling State job
“That point in time and the distractions around the contract affected me personally and professionally,” Crarey explained
FAMU attempted to keep Crarey as its men’s basketball coach
Amidst this past season, which saw the Rattlers reach as high as second out of twelve teams in the SWAC standings, FAMU repackaged a contract extension for Crarey. In February, FAMU offered Crarey a two-year extension worth $330,000
which the coach later agreed to and signed
Crarey also added that FAMU presented a counteroffer before he left for Grambling State
“FAMU did come back and offer me on the last day before I went to Grambling
But they couldn’t match what Grambling had to offer,” Crarey said
“There were a lot of different things inside the [Grambling] deal
The FAMU offer was given to me in the midnight hour of decision making time
Crarey commended the Grambling State brass’ unity and attentiveness in his hire
It was a complete 180 from what Crarey experienced when he came to FAMU
“The synergy between the administration and the athletic department
They’re just trying to get stuff done,” Crarey said
and never wavered in their pursuit of me.”
FAMU men's basketball accomplished a lot in lone year under Patrick Crarey IIDespite the “rollercoaster of emotions” from Crarey’s contract dispute
the wide-eyed first-time Division I coach put his head down and worked to put FAMU basketball back on the map
Crarey tirelessly recruited needle-moving players like Sterling Young and Milton Matthews to play for FAMU
Young was named the SWAC’s Player of the Year, while Matthews garnered SWAC Newcomer of the Year honors. Both, among others
have entered the transfer portal since the season’s end
and reached the SWAC Tournament for the first time since 2021-2022
The Rattlers won a SWAC Tournament game for the first time by beating the Prairie View A&M Panthers 75-66 on March 11
recognizing the top first-year Division I head coach
then kind of trailed off,” Crarey reflected on his lone season at FAMU
Crarey knows the potential of FAMU’s basketball program after helping it reach new heights in less than a calendar year there
“If alumni just support the guy that comes in after me
as long as it’s not when they play against us
With FAMU and Grambling State both being SWAC schools
Crarey knows he will see the Rattlers down the road
The Rattlers and the Tigers typically play each other twice amidst the SWAC basketball’s 18-game schedule
“You know I’ll be very excited to come back here and play
As it will be for whoever replaces me,” Crarey said
Crarey is thankful for the support he got while he earned his chops on the Division I level at FAMU
“I think many people supported me a lot more because of some of the things they saw me go through,” Crarey said
just appreciative to everybody for the support they gave us during the ups and downs
Grambling State introduced Crarey as its new men’s basketball head coach on Friday
very emotional and difficult time,” Crarey said
I was mixed with emotions throughout the whole process and still am

The introductory press conference for Coach Crarey will take place at Grambling State's Fredrick C
Hobdy Assembly Center at 10:00 AM CT on Friday
Crarey will fill the vacancy left by former GSU head coach Donte' Jackson
who left the Tigers program to become the head coach at Alabama A&M University
Crarey had an interesting season at Florida A&M University after being appointed head coach of the Rattlers on Apr
The Board of Trustees did not approve the initial contract proposal for Coach Crarey
which had been submitted by the former Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics
After successfully coaching under a modified contract this season
the board proposed extending Crarey with a salary increase and other incentives
there wasn't confirmation that Crarey accepted the terms before accepting Grambling State's offer
Crarey guided Florida A&M to a 13-16 overall record and a 10-8 SWAC record during the 2024-25 season
Thomas University Bobcats to a 61-27 record
and won a Sun Conference Regular Season Championship for three consecutive seasons
Crarey was named Sun Conference Coach of the Year for the 2023-24 season
Carery served as the men's basketball coach and athletic director at Washington Adventist University for ten seasons
in Kinesiology and Exercise from La Sierra University in 2007

Dear Grambling State University Community: As we continue to make progress in 2025
I want to take a moment to share our key institutional priorities and the progress we are
the place where ‘Everybody is Somebody,’ even the littlest Tigers are important
And now GSU has a special reason to celebrate its littlest tigers after the university held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday afternoon to celebrate the rebirth of its Child Development Center
GSU’s Child Development Center closed in 2009 due to a lack of sufficient funding
but monies from the Ascend at the Aspen Institute’s Black and Native Family Futures Fund and a $2 million grant from the U.S
The Department of Education helped return the facility to operation on the Grambling State campus
known as the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) grant — was awarded to GSU to develop comprehensive support strategies for student parents
is a product of the Child Development Center and expressed his pride at the facility’s reopening
“We celebrate little tigers and encourage them to become future Tigers and come to Grambling State University and explore the career and life of their dreams,” Lemelle said
“We’re excited about the child development center and its rebirth and what it means for our community
what it means for the ecosystem of our students and parents
and thinking through the articulation of the possibilities
“So when you open the door today and see yourselves here and your children here
share the message — the message that this is possible because of investment
Investment from the Department of Education
investment of partners like the Aspen Institute
This is also an opportunity for our workforce
because many of our team members from across the campus are here today
If you have little loved ones in your family
there is also an opportunity to engage them in the fabric of the child development center.”
The center will operate under the auspices of GSU’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS)
which is headed by interim director Terry Matthews
Heading the Child Development Center itself will be interim director Carol Lewis
“Our goal is to produce readers by the age of 4,” Lewis said
“We will be able to accomplish this goal because of the wonderful ecosystem we have at Grambling State University
the department which the center is housed within
“But FCS is not the only department that has embraced this Childhood Education Center
Those gentlemen have been instrumental in helping us do the groundwork necessary for us to open.”
dean of GSU’s College of Arts and Sciences
for incorporating an early childhood education component into GSU’s education program
“We have early education majors who are doing their work study in our childcare center,” Lewis said
Our goal is to teach the whole child so that in secondary school education
we want to expose them to the early stages of human development so that they become not only better educators but better parents in the long run.”
Lewis said both of her two sons were reading by the age of three and that is something she wants to see for all children attending GSU’s Child Education Center
so that is my goal for the children of this center — to expose them to literacy early and often so they are prepared for K-12
not only to succeed but to excel,” Lewis said
“We want them to ask where did those abilities come from
And we want them to know that it came from the Grambling State University Child Development Center.”
Matthews said the rebirth of the center creates a new future for GSU
“A bright future officially begins here in our ‘Little Tiger World of Wonder’ — the Grambling State University Child Development Center,” Matthews said
“Today we gather to celebrate the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the GSU Child Development Center
a place where little tigers’ dreams take flight and their little minds blossom
a nurturing ground where children can explore
who are now positioned to receive invaluable learning experience as they observe and work with our little Tigers.”
Matthews said the philosophy of the GSU Child Development Center is rooted in the belief that every child is unique and deserves a high-quality classroom education
“Our center provides an opportunity for parents to invest in their child’s future at no cost to them,” Matthews said
Full funding for tuition and the complete operation of the child education center is provided through a CCAMPIS grant that awarded Grambling State University $2 million
“We are committed to providing high quality childcare and education for our little tigers
We are so proud of the fact that the teachers at the center are graduates of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences
We are excited to embark on this journey at the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences and we will carry out our vision
our mission and the goals here at Grambling State University
Together we will create a bright future for our children
their parents and the wonderful world of the GSU Child Development Center
Samantha Dimmer is a GSU student with a child going to the GSU Child Development Center
I majored in Child Development and came to school back in 2009,” Dimmer said
and it was a whole lot of work trying to maneuver back and forth and find a babysitter
I kept my dream going in 2011 when I was pregnant and ended up in grad school
It grew to be very hard because I didn’t have the support system that we have now.”
earning an Associate’s degree in 2013 and also studying Computer Information Systems
She completed her undergraduate degree last year and thanks to the rebirth of GSU’s Child Education Center
“When you don’t have childcare and you want to complete your education
you either stop or you keep going,” Dimmer said
Dimmer thanked Department of Family and Consumer Sciences lecturer Dr
Suzanne Mayo-Theus and Lewis for the support they’ve given her in work to continue her education and expressed gratitude to the child development center for helping her continue her academic journey
on July 3 and is able to continue her studies thanks to GSU’s Child Education Center
“It means everything to me,” Carter said of the center
but it’s much more different when you’re a single mom yourself
I didn’t know what to do or how it would go
I don’t know who could watch my child while I am in school
but this allows me to better myself and become the mom I need to be.”
a corporal in the Louisiana National Guard
said she hopes her story will encourage other moms to take advantage of the child education center
they actually teach my child,” Carter said
“He went and the next week he was literally coming home and making noise and ‘talking’ and doing things like trying to sit up at only 4 months
Grambling State University remains committed to removing financial barriers and empowering student success
awarding $267,968 in donor-funded scholarships to 264 students for the Spring 2025 semester
This milestone builds upon a record-breaking year
with the university surpassing its $500,000 scholarship goal for 2024-2025 — a 102% increase in total funds distributed and a 131% rise in the number of awards granted compared to the previous academic year
the GSU Scholarship Committee worked diligently to review applications and strategically allocate funding to maximize impact
“Every dollar dedicated to our students helps unlock their potential
Vice President for University Advancement and Innovation
“With 42% of our students being first-generation and over 95% relying on some form of aid
we recognize the critical role scholarships play in transforming lives
Our mission is to become the #1 HBCU in social and economic mobility
and these investments directly empower our students to achieve upward financial and career success.”
Some of the most impactful awards this semester came from the Hunt Forest Products
The Shade Room First Generation Endowed Scholarship
each contributing $9,000 in scholarships to deserving students
receiving a scholarship is more than just financial relief — it represents hope
and a renewed commitment to their academic journey
“As an international student with a partial scholarship and a $3,000 deficit
receiving this support has been life-changing,” said Theophilus Mensah
“It has significantly reduced my financial burden
allowing me to focus on my education and career aspirations
This scholarship is a symbol of hope and encouragement
reminding me that my dreams are valid and achievable.”
a sophomore criminal justice major from Ruston
I felt that my academic efforts had been noticed — I’ve been working hard to exceed my own expectations
The financial assistance will allow me to focus more on my studies and become more engaged on campus
These scholarships not only lighten financial strain but also empower students to remain engaged
and achieve their academic goals—a direct testament to the power of philanthropy in higher education
This semester’s awards surpassed the university’s goal
marking a record-breaking year of scholarship support
when $232,500 in endowed scholarships were distributed
Grambling State continues to increase scholarship resources year over year
“Grambling State remains steadfast in its mission to eliminate financial barriers and open doors for our students,” said President Dr
whose generosity continues to transform lives
Their commitment not only supports individual student success but also strengthens the legacy of excellence that defines Grambling State.”
Endowments serve as a cornerstone of GSU’s long-term strategy for financial sustainability and student support
endowments generate investment income while preserving the principal
ensuring perpetual scholarship funding for future generations
The Grambling University Foundation plays a critical role in managing these funds
ensuring that donor contributions are maximized for growth and longevity
“Endowed scholarships allow donors to create a lasting legacy while directly shaping the future of our students,” said Logan
“With a 3% payout of endowment value this year
these funds are actively providing critical scholarship support while preserving principal for future generations.”
As Grambling State continues to break barriers and expand access to education
Every gift — whether establishing a new endowment
or making an annual commitment fuels student potential and strengthens Grambling State University’s institutional excellence
