GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — A site on 233 Washington Ave. in downtown Grand Haven could be home to a new 128-room hotel. 6PM Hospitality Partners unveiled their plans for the hotel at a Grand Haven Planning Commission work session Tuesday night
"We're proposing [a] 128-room Residence Inn by Marriott
Residence Inn is an extended-stay brand by Marriott
which will really help capture guests to stay a long time and spend time and their resources in the restaurants and shops throughout downtown Grand Haven," said CEO of 6PM Hospitality Partners
Beukema said a hotel is much needed in downtown Grand Haven
"It is a missing part in downtown Grand Haven," Beukema said
"We've looked at industry data from downtown Grand Haven
and currently the number one hotel choice is in Holland for Grand Haven visitors
And the number two and number three are downtown Grand Rapids."
lakeshore tourists will have another option to stay in Grand Haven in the form of a Residence Inn by Marriott
"It's providing a different type of product within this community that will keep travelers here
The brand's average length of stay is between five and seven nights
where a transient hotel like a Hampton Inn or Courtyard Marriott would be more of one to two nights
And so that's going to keep people here longer to spend time and really enjoy downtown." said Beukema
"This property will generate about $18 million economic impact to the community
both in the restaurants and the stores at the gas stations and alike."
Plans for the hotel were positively received at Tuesday's work session
Tonight was just a planning commission study session to get their feedback and their reaction to where we're at so far," said Beukema
"I thought that meeting went very well tonight
We had a lot of positive feedback about the project
obviously some concerns around parking and the height."
Their next step is to prepare a full planning commission submittal to address the concerns they heard from the commission Tuesday night
"The engineering and architecture demolition would probably start late fall to mid winter
kind of that around the first of the year-ish
with a goal to open in March or April of 2027," Beukema said
It's a project that's close to home for the Zeeland native. "To create a place of a sense of home and community downtown is what really drives us

Developers want to build a new hotel in downtown Grand Haven that would cater to leisure and business travelers
in Grand Rapids and 6pm Hospitality Partners LLC in Zeeland intend to seek zoning approval for a 128-room Residence Inn by Marriott at 233 Washington Ave.
according to planning documents filed with the city
The 1.41-acre site is at Third Street on the east end of the downtown business district and once hosted a Fifth Third Bank office
“At the heart of the city’s thriving core lies a unique opportunity — one that creates a dynamic space for visitors to fully immerse themselves in all that Grand Haven has to offer,” states a summary submitted to the city that details the project
“This project represents a meaningful investment in Grand Haven’s future
reinforcing the city’s position as a premier destination while supporting local businesses and enhancing the character of its historic downtown.”
The summary describes the project as a “visionary new development that not only supports the continued growth of Grand Haven’s downtown but also enriches the vibrant community that makes this area so special.”
The project would “provide high-quality extended-stay accommodations that support tourism
and align with the City of Grand Haven’s Downtown Vision Plan,” according to the proposal

residential-style suites designed for longer stays
providing guests with the ideal home base to explore the vibrant local shops
and attractions that define Grand Haven,” the summary states
“Positioned on the edge of the downtown core
the hotel will serve as a welcoming gateway
drawing more visitors into the heart of the city and encouraging broader engagement with local businesses.”
The summary did not include a cost estimate for the project
A BDR representative could not immediately be reached for comment
The Grand Haven Planning Commission will begin reviewing the project Tuesday evening next week at its regular monthly meeting
The project would require rezoning the property as a planned unit development
The present building on the property dates back several years and once housed a Fifth Third Bank branch
Fifth Third sold the property in September 2018 and leased back the office
the bank’s vice president for regional marketing
Fifth Third over the years has closed other downtown office locations and sold the building for redevelopment, including in Traverse City and most notably the regional headquarters on Lyon Street in downtown Grand Rapids that’s presently undergoing a major office-to-residential conversion by CWD Real Estate Investment LLC
The sale of the Grand Haven location and proposed redevelopment “is not inconsistent with what we’re doing,” Stenstrom said
“We have a history of providing opportunities for prime downtown locations,” he said
BDR cited the potential spinoff economic benefits and how the project “can significantly boost the local economy through direct and indirect spending by guests.” American Hotel & Lodging Association data shows spending in Michigan by hotel guests is $18.2 billion
or an average of $141,500 annually per the 128,649 guest rooms in the state
that translates into $18.1 million in spending from the Grand Haven project
“This substantial figure underscores the potential benefits of the new hotel to Grand Haven’s economy
including increased employment opportunities and enhanced support for local businesses,” states the summary
noting that “enhanced accommodation options can attract more visitors
The project is the second new hotel planned for Grand Haven
Sylvan Lake-based Elite Hospitality Group LLC plans to develop a four-story, 131-room hotel on the south channel of the Grand River and just west of U.S
