I know you've driven past this little neighborhood in Grand Junction a million times (maybe not that many
but enough.) Have you ever just taken a little drive --or stroll-- through its quaint streets
The little neighborhood I'm talking about is Riverside
since it seems to still have its old-time community charm
When my wife and I were looking for a house
we both wanted to find a place in Riverside

Taking a scroll through the houses in the neighborhood on Zillow
some of the original houses that still stand were built in 1898
Others were constructed from the early 1900s to the mid-1900s
The area of Riverside wasn't always a quaint little neighborhood. At one point, the area was home to Grand Junction's junkyard area -- you know the story of Watson Island, right

In the letter, the Mesa County Commissioners said, “Mesa County strongly supports the LOCAL Act and urges Congress to pass this important legislation. Ensuring the BLM headquarters is permanently in Grand Junction is not only a win for our community but also for the efficient and effective management of public lands across the West. We believe that this bill will continue to create good-paying jobs, reduce costs, and improve the federal government’s ability to serve the people it represents.”
On behalf of the Mesa County Board of Commissioners, we write to express our steadfast support for your LOCAL Act (H.R. 1125). This essential legislation seeks to permanently relocate the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) headquarters in Grand Junction, Colorado, ensuring that over 300 vital jobs in the Western United States are protected, and that the BLM can continue to serve the needs of rural communities throughout the West.
During President Trump's first term, the decision was made to move the BLM headquarters to Grand Junction, where it was closer to the federal lands it oversees. However, this move was reversed under the Biden Administration. The LOCAL Act will not only protect these jobs in key states like Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming, but it will also safeguard the benefits of having a BLM presence in the West.
The economic and logistical benefits of this relocation are significant. The Department of the Interior has estimated that moving the BLM headquarters to Grand Junction in 2020 saved over $2 million in lease costs, $1.9 million in salary savings, and another $1.9 million in travel costs. By keeping the headquarters in Grand Junction, taxpayers continue to benefit from these savings while enhancing the agency’s ability to manage federal lands more efficiently.
Since the establishment of the BLM headquarters in Grand Junction in August 2020, we have seen significant improvements in service and decision-making. The move has reduced long cross-country flights, improved training and customer service, and delegated more responsibility to employees in the field, all of which have resulted in better decision-making and enhanced local collaboration.
Mesa County strongly supports the LOCAL Act and urges Congress to pass this important legislation. Ensuring the BLM headquarters is permanently in Grand Junction is not only a win for our community but for the efficient and effective management of public lands across the West. We believe that this bill will continue to create good-paying jobs, reduce costs, and improve the federal government’s ability to serve the people it represents.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your continued support of the Western communities that depend on responsible public land management.
and opposition to that change was front and center in the city’s election Tuesday
Candidates campaigned against the bike lanes in mailers
calling it a “mess,” and residents focused on the changes downtown in city council meetings and letters to the local newspaper
voters ultimately backed three City Council candidates who campaigned against the bike lanes: Robert Ballard
Ben Van Dyke and Cody Kennedy were elected
The bike lanes on Fourth and Fifth Streets were part of a pilot project aimed at slowing traffic through downtown and improving safety for bikes and pedestrians
and they were regularly used by drivers commuting into town from areas like Orchard Mesa
bike lanes were moved behind parallel parking spaces and totally out of the way of traffic and the lanes choked from two lanes to one
The slowdown for cars prompted months of outcry from residents at public meetings
the design of the roadway has been adjusted multiple times and further changes were scheduled for this spring once temperatures got warm enough to repaint the roads
was the most prominent voice on the city council objecting to the changes
But he blanched at the notion that the results of the race were a mandate from voters and said changes to the street design would go through the normal council process
I'm a collaborative person and I think it's important that we approach anything with an open mind,” Kennedy said.
a newcomer to the council and a resident of the Orchard Mesa area south of downtown
said he did take the results of Tuesday’s election as an indication that it was time to wind the clock back on the changes to the downtown area.
“The people have been asking for their two-lane streets back on Fourth and Fifth Street
whether that goes back to the original setup or whether or not that's kind of a hybrid of what we've got
they want those double lanes back and we're going to bring that to them,” Ballard said
While Councilmember Jason Nguyen supported the revisioning of the roads
“I think it would be foolish to ignore kind of the visceral anger that was around these changes,” he said.
He still believes the reasons behind the changes were sound and thinks part of the problem was poor messaging
who uses the bike lanes on Fourth and Fifth himself
thinks opponents of the changes focused the conversation on inconvenience for motorists as opposed to bike and pedestrian safety
While he doesn’t know what the newly configured council will envision for the streets
he said that maybe restoring two car lanes while finding a way to keep the new bike lanes could be “more politically palatable.”
Van Dyke, who could not be reached for comment, campaigned not only on the street changes but also another downtown flashpoint — a resource center for unhoused residents that opened in January 2024 and has been the subject of hours of debate
the resource center sits adjacent to a car wash he owns
though the center is slated to move its services out of downtown in the coming months
a former police detective who also raised safety concerns over the resource center
said council will continue to work on how to handle the unhoused crisis and he expects the process to remain deliberative.
Tuesday’s election could remake the character of the city council
shifting it farther right than it has been in recent years
Even though Grand Junction tends to vote conservative
for the previous two city council elections
most of the progressive and moderate candidates beat their more conservative rivals
former head of the county’s Democratic party
but said he was looking toward the future.
He worries about how tariffs could impact the local economy and how the community is in desperate need of more affordable housing
He hopes the newly remade City Council doesn’t simply undo everything the previous council did
including the creation of the unhoused resource center
“I’m concerned that people will get frustrated and just drop it
and we’ll have a homelessness problem all over town,” he said.
Beilfuss hopes the new council can work together to solve problems

John Hickenlooper invoked Valley Forge at an event in Grand Junction Monday night while encouraging disaffected voters to stay engaged in politics
But he also invoked collegiality to defend his approach to navigating Trump politics.
Hickenlooper spoke to a crowd of hundreds at the Asteria Theatre at Colorado Mesa University
while the first-term Senator referenced George Washington's fortitude during the Revolutionary War as grounds to not give up hope
attendees asked him to show more fight in standing up to Trump’s policies.
“You have said you're going to fight like hell against Trump policies
but what some of these actions demonstrate is something else,” Mesa County resident Claire Ninde said to Hickenlooper
noting Hickenlooper’s votes for 10 of President Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees
“They're going to try and claw that (grant funding) back
I think I can get Burgum to loosen that up,” Hickenlooper said
Environmental groups have criticized the cabinet picks
but Hickenlooper said he sees in Wright and Burgum a chance to salvage parts of the climate work that started under Biden
something he says he did not see in other would-be nominees.
“You should have seen the other people that they were talking about (for cabinet positions.) I'm not being funny,” Hickenlooper said
we're at war and you've got to be pragmatic as well as ruthless.”
a Mesa County resident who attended the event
said after the town hall that he appreciated Hickenlooper’s efforts but thinks the current politics may not favor some of his approaches.
you're going to have to have some kind of plan and we're learning you need to be ruthless,” Wilson said.
Hickenlooper also said he felt there would be enough pressure on some Republicans to thwart some actions of the Trump Administration, pointing to Republican Congressman Jeff Hurd, whose district includes Grand Junction and who introduced a bill to reassert Congress’ power over tariffs.
“You can boo him later,” Hickenlooper said
responding to a crowd reaction at the reference of the freshman congressman’s name
“but he's one of two Republicans who signed onto a bill.”
who has stops planned in Glenwood Springs and Eagle this week
said he knew a number of audience members weren’t “going to love this” approach to his Senate role
but he felt that pushback to Trump policies was gaining a wider foothold and that Democrats could build on public outcry as they develop an agenda over the next few months and
build toward a 2028 presidential candidate
something he was quick to say would not involve his name.

500 and 1,000Mbps speeds throughout much of Grand Junction
All plans include unlimited data and a free modem rental
Recent FCC data shows fiber availability is limited to almost 19% of Grand Junction households
Serviceability is greatest in the Westwood Estates and Colonial Heights communities
but fiber internet is still difficult to come by in any part of Grand Junction
Quantum Fiber is the area’s main fiber internet provider
Spectrum has the lowest introductory rate for home internet in Grand Junction at $30 monthly for speeds up to 100Mbps
All other major ISPs in the Grand Junction area have a starting monthly price of $50 or higher
Quantum Fiber offers the fastest download speeds in Grand Junction
The upload speeds on this connection are symmetrical
so you also won't miss out on fast uploads
There's also a cheaper 940Mbps symmetrical plan available for $75 per month
The only caveat here is the limited available across Grand Junction
The next fastest service provider is Spectrum
max upload speeds are significantly slower
Verizon 5G Home Internet has the potential to reach max speeds of 1,000Mbps
but customers should anticipate a speed range of anywhere between 50 to 250Mbps
CNET recommends Spectrum as the best internet provider in Grand Junction
wide availability and solid speeds for most households
If you’re looking for faster, symmetrical speeds, Quantum Fiber is worth considering. It offers multi-gig plans with equal upload and download speeds, though its availability in Grand Junction is limited. CenturyLink
has broader coverage but doesn’t match the speeds or value of Quantum Fiber or Spectrum
T-Mobile Home Internet and Verizon 5G Home Internet are the top fixed wireless options in the area
Rise Broadband and Optimus Communications also serve Grand Junction

The only psychiatric hospital between Denver and Salt Lake City is closing
Based in Grand Junction for nearly 20 years
West Springs Hospital will shut its doors on March 10
The hospital’s board of directors announced the closure with a “heavy heart” in a Monday statement.
and we understand the profound impact it will have on our patients
staff and community,” the release said.
The board cited the “uncertain future of Medicaid” as one reason
along with financial challenges and underutilization
Though the hospital is licensed for 48 beds
it has had a daily average of 30 beds or fewer used over the last several years.
Most hospital employees will lose their jobs
says remaining staff will continue to offer outpatient services for psychiatric
Mind Springs will still also provide some withdrawal management services in Grand Junction
residential treatment facilities in Clifton and crisis response services for six counties
West Springs’ board of directors said it’s exploring “more modern care models” and is looking at the possibility of starting an acute treatment unit or crisis stabilization unit
West Springs Hospital’s ability to stay in operation has been a question for years. In 2021, a state investigation found a pattern of “severe life-threatening” prescription errors and deficient care
Mind Springs settled with Rocky Mountain Health Plans and entered into a new contract with Rocky Mountain
it started a partnership with Larkin Health Systems
The closing of the hospital also marks the end of that deal
Mind Springs is still part of the Colorado Crisis Services response system
You can call 844-493-TALK (8244) or text TALK to 38255 to speak to a professional
Editor's note: This story has been updated to clarify that Mind Springs Health manages West Springs Hospital
The headline has been updated to reflect only some psychiatric services will be ending
