It’s a well-oiled machine running here in Grand Ledge — where over 30 volunteers pack carts for neighbors in need
“It started in about 1994,” said Mary Holz
director of the Grand Ledge Seventh-day Adventist food bank
they’ve expanded from a small room to a full gym
the only signs are the basketball hoops on the wall and the doorways that make it difficult for neighbors to come and go
And the number of people going through those doors is expanding
“Gradually we’ve expanded to where we’re seeing close to 600 families
almost 2,000 people that we’re serving here every year,” Holz said
I recently told you about the Fretail Store closing at the Lansing Mall
some of those neighbors are finding their way here
“Did you come here today because the Fretail is closed
picking up groceries including meat and produce
“Usually it lasts us for about a month because it is just my son and I
It means a lot to me because I can make anything and everything
Holz said the need in Grand Ledge is often overlooked
“Often Grand Ledge is viewed as kind of an affluent town
but there is a need and it kind of goes unnoticed,” she said
A new door at the distribution center is needed — but it’s estimated to cost around $10,000
“We have clients in wheelchairs and clients that don't get around well
and it would just make it so much easier for them to access the building,” she said

Watch the video above to see how neighbors are feeling about president Donald Trump's first 100 days in his second term
I’m pretty happy with what’s going on,” said Lydia Michaels
“I feel as though it’s horrible,” said Cordero Spencer
I heard mixed feelings here in Delta Township as neighbors reflected on President Donald Trump's first few months back in the White House
Tuesday marks his 100th day of his second term
Neighbor Kim Warren said she voted for Trump
saying his efforts on immigration have stood out to her
I think he’d do better if they'd at least let him get the criminals out of here,” said Warren
But another neighbor told me a different perspective
Brianna Bassett is concerned about the future of federal jobs
and it kinda makes me worried about the future,” said Bassett

Danielle Berroa took her three children to Jaycee Park on a beautiful spring Tuesday.“It’s right near the water
There’s picnic tables to bring picnic dinners,” she said
neighbors who were surveyed raised concerns over accessibility and the older age of the equipment
but it does have quite the incline down,” Berroa said
“Got stuck and literally had to turn the chair and go up backwards,” she said
The City of Grand Ledge has proposed a new playground—one that will be more accessible than ever
Teri Langley is the executive director of Disability Network Michigan
She talked with me about how a new playground would be able to be used by more children
“This playground is going to be created with universal design metrics
which means it’s more than just the ADA standards.” Langley said
And because the plans would even go beyond ADA standards
the new playground could benefit more than just the children there to play
“There are people that we don't think about that like to use playgrounds with their children,” Langley said
“Be able to play with my grandkids more because it's difficult to get around on the grass,” she said
The custom-made playground carries a price tag of $1.2 million
“We have so far secured 65 to 70 percent of the funding,” said Keith Mulder
The city is awaiting the outcome of several grants but needs neighbors' support to complete the project
Our parks budget is very minimal—pretty much takes care of mowing lawns and trimming trees,” said Mulder
A fundraising effort is underway to raise $75,000 to fill the gap needed to fully fund the project by June 1
And Vittoria says the possibility of seeing her grandchildren here on the playground would have a big impact for her

And Courtney Trudell is taking her twins to pick out the books they’ve been eyeing all week
Didn’t you want two of them?” said Trudell
An extra book here is something that Trudell says she's been able to afford
thanks to Michigan's pre-K for all expansion
“I can go with the kids and pick out two books instead of putting all of that money towards tuition for preschool,” said Trudell
The opportunity for more families to avoid out-of-pocket preschool costs is something Jennifer McCaffrey has been working to expand
She works at the Eaton Regional Education Service Agency or RESA
“Saving that 10,000 to 12,000 dollars a year in child care costs or preschool expenses means that they can have a better lifestyle and save some money on that,” said McCaffery
Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the plan to make pre-K free for every Michigan family
She gave an update last week and said more than half of all 4-year-olds in Michigan are getting free pre-K
and overall enrollment in pre-K is at a record high
"We're really proud to announce that enrollment in Michigan's free pre-K program has reached 47,500 which is the highest we've been in over a decade," said Gretchen Whitmer
they're part of the statewide Great Start Readiness Program
And as enrollment has risen in the past two years due to the expansion
Eaton RESA has nearly doubled its capacity for free pre-K
“Numbers went up to about 160 students across Eaton County
This year we've been able to serve 300 students,” said McCaffery
And McCaffrey says they’re still looking to add even more free pre-K seats
“We’re looking at adding partners through child care centers that may already be offering 4-year-old programming and then working with our local school districts to add more classrooms and serve more families,” said McCaffery
with having two of them enrolled in preschool,” said Trudell
But she told me this free pre-K is about a lot more than saving her family money
“Not only the financial thing but also the emotional
because I had them at the peak of the pandemic
The social-emotional impact has been phenomenal on both of them
They’re just like night and day.” said Trudell
Neighbors who have children who are going to be 4 years old before the end of the year can enroll for next year now
“We never know what the weather’s going to be like
whether it’s going to be cold or rainy or snowy or windy like it is today.” said Amy Hoyes
It’s so much fun with family.” said Diane Miller
Families took the opportunity to line the streets after a cold winter kept them inside
“It’s an opportunity for all of us to get together and have fun out here
It means a lot to us that they keep doing it every year.” said David Paz
Many neighbors kicked off the parade at the Bridge Street Plaza
meeting some Irish Wolfhounds and having some green drinks
The extra people on downtown streets are a welcome sight for business owners like Stephanie Lapp
“It’s one of the most exciting days of the year
we get really excited.” said Stephanie Lapp
She owns Ledge Craft Lane and says Saturday’s parade marks the beginning of a new season
and that brings people into our business all the time.” said Lapp
I've covered what it takes to be a part of one of these parades
you can see why so many neighbors take pride in these events
And that pride was on full display—especially from this neighbor
And when you put in as much effort as Grand Ledge does
so I’m just letting you know that.” said Miller
Dehumidifiers are running at the historic Grand Ledge Opera House after a pipe burst during the deep freeze in late January
says this building holds importance for neighbors in Grand Ledge
"The Opera House is known as the hidden gem of Grand Ledge
This building dates back to 1884," said Harvey
the repairs and renovations will be costly
"Preliminary estimates—we’ve heard numbers anywhere from $250,000 to $500,000," said Harvey
The building looks like a shell of what it used to be
Harvey says their insurance is covering the major costs
but it couldn’t prevent the cancellation of more than 40 events over the next few months
One of those events is Singers on the Grand
I spoke with Katy Brandon-McDonough and Charlie Martin
They told me that news of the damage had them concerned
"I was wondering about how much damage," said Martin
"I was a little panicked," said Brandon-McDonough
Brandon-McDonough has been part of the event for decades and says the Opera House holds a special place in her heart
I hear the music—it’s just a montage of all the people who have worked to bring this into existence and maintain it," said Brandon-McDonough
Singers on the Grand started as part of an effort to fund Opera House renovations in the 1990s
as the current repairs and renovations are expected to be finished in time for their rescheduled concert in May—giving the event new life and making it one of the first to be held at the restored venue
"It’s quite an honor to come back to the Opera House after the renovation and be one of the first concerts held there," said Martin
I’ve shown you how some neighbors are working to preserve local history
I spoke with a member of the Grand Ledge Historical Society about how he’s sharing historical photos of my neighborhood
And Harvey showed me how she is working to preserve this part of neighborhood history
She said that while the burst pipe has brought dark clouds of uncertainty
sunny weather is on the way as she looks forward to what the Opera House might look like after renovations
It’s going to have a fresh new look," said Harvey
"It's brisk but doable." Said Kirk and Debbie Melville
A local business owner says the cold weather in downtown Grand Ledge
has had an affect on foot traffic to her store
"We might see just one or two people in the store per day
Davis says a lot of her business comes from online during the winter season
and she wanted to find a new way to get neighbors out of the house
businesses are working together to draw in more neighbors- like Kirk and Debbie Melville
so you're in and out and moving on to the next one," Kirk said
One idea to bring people downtown is the Chocolate Cruise
an event where more than 10 businesses are offering a sweet treat to those who brave the cold
"We have over 10 businesses participating in the Chocolate Cruise," said Davis
but downtown shops hope it's a cruise that locals won’t want to miss
Visitors will receive chocolate and a punch card at each participating business
Those who visit all locations will be entered into a raffle
came up with the idea to encourage more people to shop downtown
"I hope people find it fun and want to get out and be a tourist in their own town," said Carolyn Miller
businesses here have faced challenges in recent months—from road construction in the summer to now the bitter winter cold
But while some businesses are seeing a slump
Chris Edmondson says the winter season is his busy season as neighbors stay inside to listen to records
Owner Chris Edmondson said he hopes the Chocolate Cruise will encourage more people to explore downtown
"The record shop is a unique niche in Grand Ledge
similar to the tabletop gaming lounge two doors down
You don’t see too many of those around with the card stamping
I think it will bring people to other businesses
Kirk Melville said he’s happy to see local stores working together
The Chocolate Cruise takes place this Saturday afternoon in downtown Grand Ledge.
A Walk in the Park is an ongoing series from State Journal photographer Nick King
who intends to explore Lansing area parks one hour at a time
If you have a suggestion of a park he should visit
Oak Park is a 9-acre park situated on one of the many sedimentary rock ledges popular in the Grand Ledge area next to the Grand River
located at 700 West Front Street in Grand Ledge
features a natural trail that leads through the park and down the side of the ledges to the bottom riverbank where visitors can get an up-close view of the beautiful ledges made of sandstone
It's a great spot for experienced rock climbers
with dozens of rock climbing routes identified
Walkers passing along the sheer rock walls and climbers are encouraged to use caution
Climbers are expected to adhere to posted rock climbing ethics instructions
there's plenty of riverfront accessible for fishing
Descending the trail to the bottom of the ledges is challenging at times
so make sure to be careful and aware of your limitations before heading down
there's a large open field with mature oak trees and picnic tables
There's also a wooden observation dock where visitors can look out at the river and take in the ledges from an easily accessible spot
If walking down the ledges is too difficult
there's a natural trail loop around the park for a more relaxing stroll with plenty of nature and wildlife to take in
At the park's entrance there's a nice sized parking lot and seasonal bathrooms
Logan Tollison just missed ending up on the top spot of the podium at the Michigan High School Athletic Association individual state wrestling finals last season
The Grand Ledge standout was edged by Detroit Catholic Central's Connor Bercume by a 5-3 decision in the 215-pound weight class championship match in Division 1
capping his sophomore season as a state runner-up
And that setback is driving Tollison to get a different result over the next few weeks
That motivation has been on display this winter as Tollison
who was voted the latest LSJ high school athlete of the week
He helped Grand Ledge have another strong season as a team that included claiming CAAC Blue and Division 1 district championships
And Tollison has shined individually as well
He entered Saturday's individual regional with a 39-0 record
has compiled that perfect record while being tested against several other top ranked wrestlers in the state
"I've definitely faced a lot of good opponents," Tollison said
"(The key is) just staying in good position
I feel like that is the biggest thing with me facing someone that's good
Someone that is highly ranked or a good wrestler
they have established attacks and they know what they're going to go and do
"They're going to keep trying to work for an attack and if you don't let them get it they're going to break
who has built off his sophomore success despite having shoulder surgery in the offseason
Grand Ledge coach Mark Buckland said Tollison is a very confident and skilled wrestler who works hard
who has put himself in position to wrestle collegiately at the Division I level
Tollison has had just one takedown scored against him this season and is determined to not let that happen again the rest of the way
"He had shoulder surgery over the summer so that slowed him down just a little bit," Buckland said
"He came back just before Christmas and probably a month ago you could see that switch and he turned it
The top-rated kids — he's just gone right at them and is scoring bonus points and coming out on top."

The driver was ejected from the vehicle as a result of the crash and the vehicle was split into two
Life-saving measures were attempted by first responders but the man died at the scene

The city of Grand Ledge is seeking funding from the community to build a new playground for kids of all abilities at Jaycee Park
The park already has an ADA accessible canoe and kayak launch
The proposed 12,000-square-foot playground will include a play tower
swings and several climbing and slide areas
a special education teacher at Grand Ledge High School who also serves on the city council
said that community feedback led to the plan for the new playground
doesn’t just comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act; it’s also “universally designed,” meaning it will be usable by all regardless of age or ability
“This universally designed playground means that my students
my own children and others from the community can play
